A Maintenance Plumber to rely on Ben Leefe has been creating beautiful bathrooms in the York area for ten years.

for a long time, but it seemed the installation and wiring meant they were stuck with it. Ben, however, managed to change them over to a thermostatic shower... and restore peace to the family once more! This typical case study demonstrates how Ben is willing to spend time to help homeowners find exactly he right solution for their home and their family. Free estimates and quotes are available.

H • Multi trade team e mainly works in domestic properties and specialises in installing bathrooms, showers – and helping families solve their plumbing problems.

Ben doesn’t believe in being a ‘jack of all trades’ – he prefers himself and the people he works with to be masters of one. He works alongside experienced tilers and a trusted, qualified electrician, which means he can ensure your bathroom project is completed as swiftly as possible and every aspect of it is carried out by the appropriate expert. While he focuses on the plumbing – the bit he does best – the tiling and electrics

are being carried out by people who are fully qualified for the job. In response to customer demand, last year Ben qualified to work with gas and was registered with Gas Safe, meaning he can bring the reliability and quality of workmanship he’s known for to boiler and central heating installations and plumbing. For a discussion about your plumbing or heating, or a free estimate, contact Ben Leefe on 01904 340801 or 07887 852468. • Bathroom, Tiling & Showers

elcome to the November edition. I know it is only October still but it is time to mention the ‘C’ word. Christmas is coming and you need to be prepared. This year, more than years before, our local independent suppliers and retailers deserve our support. Yorkshire produce is second to none, with delicious food at any number of local retailers and farm shops, and gorgeous gifts and clothing from independent shops. On our doorsteps there is choice, quality, service and good prices that can easily beat the giant chains. Instead of following the crowds to some anonymous shopping centre, why not enjoy a day out and see what our independent retailers have to offer. There is so much still to happen before the silly season starts. Bonfire Night is always a sociable occasion in my village. It’s a fun event, with sporadic rockets, fountains, the Catherine Wheel that fails to spin, and tasty food and punch that

you can never really see in the dark but tastes fantastic anyway! In contrast to our ‘understated’ village display, Rat Race Events in York are staging Gunpowder Plod. This is stated as a world-first 5k run set to pyrotechnics, followed by a massive firework display with lots of entertainments. It sounds like a fantastic event and one not to be missed. Rat Race is offering Handy Mag readers a discount on tickets – see page 23 for details. You can, as ever, find a huge range of local events in this month’s Handy Mag, many giving much needed support to local charities like the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Have a look through and please give them your support too. Well done to Sue Clark of New Earswick for winning the September competition. Well done! Until next time....

t’s recommended every home should have its electrical system tested once every ten years, or on any change of ownership.

These tests ensure the wiring is safe and secure, guarding against fire and shock risks that come with ageing or decayed wiring. D Carrington Electrical Services Ltd specialise in safety testing, carrying out the requisite checks for landlord certificates, insurance regulations and mortgage deals. Fire alarm systems and emergency lighting can also be installed and inspected. Whatever your requirements, whether you need a new power point or light fitting, a new cooker installation, rewiring of your house or extension, or

Dave and his team cover York and the surrounding areas, and travel as far as Oldham, Scunthorpe, Hull and Middlesborough for their customers. The business was established just over four years ago, and it now employs two electricians in addition to Dave himself, who is an apprentice-trained electrician with 23 years’ experience. From small roofing repairs to driveways and extensions, you can make your home more attractive, comfortable and spacious with the help of Alan and his team. A popular choice right now is garage conversions. Alan has turned customers’ attached garages into TV rooms, offices, utility rooms and even bedrooms for growing families. A bricklayer by trade, Alan and his team – comprising his brother and his nephew – work alongside other local businesses to offer a full complement of building services. They do most of their work with domestic properties, but they have also been used regularly by Haxby Parish Council and York City Council’s Tenants’ Choice, as well as building bases for conservatories supplied by Orion Windows. Alan said: “We work closely with a lot of the local, well-known tradesmen. As we live and work in the local community, we make sure we take pride in everything we do and give our customers the best possible quality of service we can.” When it comes to the aspects of customer service most important to them, Alan and his team take pains to make the actual process of having work done as painless as possible for their customers, minimising the sense of intrusion. Also, before works begin, the whole process will be explained clearly and in detail, without jargon. The Handy Mag would like to wish Alan and his family congratulations on the birth of their daugther last month. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 15

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If

your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we

turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York and Harrogate areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s

not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ou never know when you might need the fast, life-saving service provided by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance – as Clare Nellist discovered in January this year. Clare, a racing secretary for horse trainer Declan Carroll, was helping him clip one of the horses when it reacted suddenly, and its front foot came down on her forehead. Bloodied and dizzy, Clare didn’t realise how serious the injury was at first, but Mr Carroll reacted quickly. Road paramedics were soon on the scene. They bandaged her head and took her to meet the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which landed on open ground nearby. Clare said: “The air paramedics were absolutely fantastic, talking to me and reassuring me, even though I refused to lie down on a stretcher because I thought it would probably be the only time I was ever going to travel in a helicopter – so I wanted to see the view!” She was flown to Scarborough Hospital in just six minutes, where the shock of what had happened finally hit home. “I had been calm until then, but when we arrived at the hospital I burst into tears. A paramedic hugged me until I stopped crying, and they accompanied me right to the bedside.” Other than a bad scar on her forehead, Clare has made a good recovery and considers herself very lucky. She said: “From the moment the air paramedics arrived on the scene I knew I was in good hands. If I’d travelled by road, the risk of me falling unconscious would have been much greater. “I donate to the air ambulance every month now, and I would really encourage anyone else to. You never know when you’re going to need them, especially if you work with horses.” The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a registered charity which relies on community fundraisers to be able to run. NOVEMBER 2012 • ISSUE 85 1. Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the

wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole.

2. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2.

Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside.

3. Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7

minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole.

4. Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the

thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender.

5. Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant

jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.

YORK

Out of Character: The fine line between madness and genius

“We make challenging work for inquisitive audiences with the aim of transcending the boundaries of modern theatre and your perceptions of mental health, claiming the territory between inspiration and medication.” That is the mission statement of York’s Out of Character Theatre Company, a unique organisation that is making great strides in improving both the understanding and experience of mental health problems. All the members of the group have or have had mental health problems, and are given through their work with the company a voice, a challenge and a means of creative expression. Out of Character have a proven track record in supporting their members and eroding problems they experience as a result of stigma and discrimination. Their work has won accolades for its honesty and courage – but now they need your help. As a not-for-profit organisation, they are reliant on donations and generosity of friends, volunteers and funders, and they are currently working hard to meet the challenge of funding the role of professional Artistic Director. The company’s performances range from the work of well-known playwrights including Samuel Beckett and Bertolt Brecht, to unique solo shows by members, plus performance poetry and interpretations of Kafka’s short stories. Many – but not all – performances focus on mental illness, and an exploration of how mental health relates to creativity, inspiration and even genius. In addition to creating great drama, the company emphasises mutual support, challenging its actors as well as building their confidence, skills and helping them find a strong sense of purpose. The group was founded through a collaboration through Bootham psychiatric hospital, Leeds and York Partnership NHS Trust and York St John University. Through the company’s connection with York St John University, they take on two or three students every year on placement to work with the group. They perform in York at the university and York Theatre Royal plus classrooms and lecture theatres, as well as taking their shows on tour. For more information, visit outofcharactertheatrecompany.wordpress.com To help support Out of Character, contact Artistic Director Gemma Alldred on g.alldred@yorksj.ac.uk 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Come Swimming, Be Safe

S

Have Fun!

wimming is an essential part of every child’s education and being able to swim increases confidence, gives you peace of mind and can also be a very enjoyable hobby.

It is estimated that 200,000 children in the UK leave primary school without basic water survival skills. Toddlers and children love to play in or around water but don’t fully understand the dangers, it is therefore important to develop water safety skills as young as possible, a good way of doing this is by joining a local swimming class. This is also a fantastic way to spend time with your baby, from the moment you take them into water at about 6 weeks old and form a bond with them through eye contact as well as singing and playing. Babies do not have the physical strength to support their own body weight until they are about 3 years old, which is when they are able to start swimming on the surface. Getting to this level can be attained through steady progression, which starts with short dips and goes through to longer consecutive underwater swims. You are never too young to enrol, some baby classes such as Baby Swimmers start from as little as 6 weeks old, whilst others will require baby’s to be at least 3 months old and to have had their immunisations. However this is generally a personal preference and dependant on your individual doctor’s or health visitors views. At Baby swimmers we make the classes fun with lots of singing and skill related activities. Your baby will gain greater muscle control and have better hand-eye co-ordination, as well as strengthening their heart and lungs. Alertness is also improved through word association and responding to a cue such as reach, reach, reach, whilst they are looking at and reaching for toys which also helps to stimulate the natural movement of their arms and legs. Holding your baby in water is a fantastic bonding experience and rewarding too. We teach parents to take their baby under water from the very beginning and it is fabulous when you get the chance to sit on the bottom of the pool and see your baby swim to you! Baby Swimmers runs classes for babies and toddlers from 6 weeks old up to 5 years, with new classes at the Bay in Filey, Terrington School, Roko at Monks Cross and Waterworld. We also have classes in Leeds, Pocklington, Harrogate, Bradford. We follow Starfish, the official water safety programme for babies through the STA. So why not, come swimming, be safe, have fun! Teach your baby water safety skills and the enjoyment of water. For further information please contact Baby Swimmers on 01757 229880. www. babyswimmers.co.uk

HOMES & GARDENS

Clean carpets the smart way couldn’t be easier

H

assle-free carpet cleaning – if you thought it wasn’t possible, think again.

Smart-Dry is a new business with an innovative approach to carpet cleaning which cuts down on drying times, extends the life of your carpet and even helps your carpet stay cleaner for longer. Anita and Peter Wilkinson’s new business specialises in cleaning any carpets without the long drying time or messy shampoo process of traditional methods of cleaning. The Smart team also offer upholstery, leather and vinyl cleaning. The solutions they use for cleaning are environmentally-friendly, neutral-based and shampoofree and can actually help your carpet stay cleaner for longer, unlike other cleaning methods which can leave your carpets more susceptible to dirt after a clean. The best news about Smart-Dry’s methods, however, is that they use around a tenth of the amount of water used by traditional cleaning techniques, which means drying time is slashed to a surprisingly low level. You can extend the life of your carpet and save on expensive replacement costs with a good cleaning treatment from Smart-Dry, as the removal of grit and dirt can help reduce wear and tear. Anita and Peter have just set up their new business, after more than 20 years’ experience with a leading carpet cleaning franchise. They cover homes and businesses in the York and greater York areas, including the surrounding villages.

As a local, family firm they are proud to offer a good quality, friendly service For more information about getting your carpets cleaner, give Anita and Peter a call on 01904 769327.

Chevy has sold more than 1.3 million Cruzes worldwide now they’ve added an estate model to the range. range, new technology and the death knell for the Cruze four-door saloon - it’s been discontinued. What’s under the bonnet? Quite simply the choice is limited to two petrols and a diesel. The petrols come in the flavour of a 128bhp 1.6 and a 139bhp 1.8. The majority of buyers will opt for the 128bhp 1.7-litre diesel as it’s the best all-rounder. We also tried a 1.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel at launch, but there are no current plans to introduce these to the UK yet. What’s the spec like? Now that the Station Wagon has arrived, more UK buyers can be expected to join in.’ Auto Express concluded: ‘The Cruze SW makes plenty of sense as a family choice, thanks to its spacious, clever boot and refined, comfortable drive, but the Ford Focus estate is sharper and much more fun to drive.’ What do we think of it? We’ve never been huge fans of the Cruze range, deeming it to be the Astra’s poorer cousin and not that attractive. My pet is terrified of fireworks, what can I do? The firework season is almost on us again. Whilst it might be exciting for some, it can present a real worry for pet owners – a recent study showed almost half of all dogs in the U.K. show some level of fearful response to loud noises. However, with a little advanced planning there a number of things you can do to help. What to do now:

• Take refuge! Prepare a refuge area or hiding place for your pet to go to during the fireworks. You can encourage your dog to use it by placing treats there. • Cats will usually find their own hiding places but you might want to keep them confined to the house prior to the event and will need to provide a litter tray. • There are a number of safe natural products available from your vet that will help keep your cat or

dog feel more relaxed. ‘Feliway’® and ‘Adaptil’ ® diffusers are plug in devices that release a synthetic analogue of a pheromone into the home environment which has a calming effect on your cat and dog respectively. Pheromones are released by nursing bitches to comfort her pups and by the cat when they ‘scent gland’ prominent objects. There is also a collar which releases pheromones available for dogs which can be worn continuously for 1 month. • Zylkene® is a supplement available to sprinkle on food for cats and dogs and again helps them to feel calm, this can be used for all sorts of stressful situations. • These products should be started before the event and continued during the fireworks season.

On the day of the event:

• Engage your dog in energetic exercise during the day to tire him out, but otherwise try to stick to your usual routine. • Keep your cat in the house and make sure all escape routes are blocked.

PETS

NOVEMBER 2012 • ISSUE 85 • Draw the curtains in the room/s the animals may retreat to and turn on some music with a lot of constant drum beats or turn the television up. • If your cat has chosen to hide, leave it well alone until it feels safe to come out, and perhaps leave the lights off in the room it has chosen to hide in. • Stay calm yourself and avoid fussing over your pets excessively, attempts to reassure or punishing your pet will only reinforce the behaviour as it suggests there was something to be afraid of. • Allow dogs free access to its preferred refuge but otherwise try to be in the same room and act normally, engaged in some sort of activity, apparently ignoring the noise. Keep some toys handy to play with your dog as a distraction. • Horses or ponies should be brought in if possible. Each year we see one or two animals who have panicked by fireworks and injured themselves.

What to do in the long term: • Fear of fireworks don’t get better on their own and often get worse, with animals becoming increasingly afraid of other loud noises like thunder. Behaviour therapy (including noise desensitisation with a sounds CD) is generally very successful at changing the response to fireworks and loud noises – the sooner the problem is addressed the better the outcome is likely to be. Do discuss with your vet, sometimes referral to an animal behaviourist may be recommended. Lucy Nowell BA VetMB MRCVS, Station House Vets

Members from Haxby Shotokan Karate Club are celebrating after their Chief Instructor, Sensei Mike Gude, was made ‘Older People’s Sport and Physical Activity Champion’ by City of York Council as part of their York Gold 2012 celebrations. Mike who is the Club’s chief instructor, has been teaching karate at Haxby Shotokan Karate Club for nearly 20 years, and along with Sensei Ian Shaw who founded the Club in 1981 was nominated by the Club Committee members for the award. At 63 Mike proves that age is no barrier when you are involved in an activity and a club that you truly care and are passionate about. Mike is more than capable of outperforming people that are more than half his age. The clocks have gone back and it’s time to turn thrifty. Let’s go back to the past and rediscover retro. We’ve selected some of the craftiest craft books that will have you feeling all warm and nostalgic in no time. With the holiday season just around the corner, it’s perfect timing. Remember: homemade gifts are for life, not just for Christmas.

Make Do and Mend: Keeping Family & Home Afloat on War Rations Publisher: Michael O’Mara

Duck the double-dip recession and take a leaf out of this reproduction 1940s instruction manual. If you’re planning a trip to Primark, think again; there may be some lost treasure in your wardrobe that can be transformed. This book is a lovely stroll down memory lane, with design ideas and simple instructions on making do with the homemade. You’ll certainly give more careful consideration to what pattern curtains you buy in the future.

Crochet For Children

By Claire Montgomerie The craft that modernity forgot is making a comeback and this book will hook your children. All the basics are covered and there are 35 mini projects for them to tackle, everything from scarves to teddy bears. It’s fun for all the family when you’re drying off in front of the fire on ‘bath night’. If you’re going seventies, then you may as well go the whole hog.

Kirstie’s Vintage Home

Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton When does shabby become chic? Kirstie Allsopp knows. As we continue to embrace vintage pieces, she’s helping us to find inspiration in fabric, crafts and techniques. With tips and hints on how to find, restore and rejuvenate furniture and everyday objects, you’ll have everything you need to make sure you end up with a piece to treasure. The buzz-word of the day is ‘upcycling’, and we’re not talking the Tour de France.

The Complete Book of Retro Crafts: Collecting, Displaying & Making Crafts of the Past By Suzie Millions

This book is like eating a FAB lolly while bouncing on a space hopper in a puff-ball skirt. It’s so retro it should be illegal. There are 40 projects with hints and tips on collecting and creating, ‘junking’ and hunting. Every charity shop and flea market will become a veritable treasure-trove. If quirky and old-school is your thing, then this book’s for you. 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Beata... H

ere we are again with another York Cats Protection resident looking for pastures new. Inevitably when we get the opportunity to feature cats in wonderful publications like the Handy Mag we like to promote some of the cats in the Centre that are finding their time here more difficult than others. As you can see Beata is no

exception, gingerly peering at you from behind her bed. Like many of the cats in our care six year old Beata was brought in because her owners were moving and weren’t able to take her to their new property. She obviously doesn’t like too much change in her life and poor Beata is not enjoying being surrounded by other cats and having lots of people moving around her. This gal needs a lovely new quiet home where she can relax and take life at a genteel pace. Over the weeks we have seen her make steady progress and she is certainly happier than when she first arrived, but you can’t beat a warm cosy lounge and the attentions of a calm friend to bring out the best in

a cat like Beata. Please call us if you can help this deserving puss. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. HOMES & GARDENS

You should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moistureretaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and reduce the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So take advantage of all those leaves while you can.

YORK

Keep the worms working

W

orms do a wonderful job of turning garden and food waste into fantastic free compost. A compost bin is likely to contain hundreds of worms, each eating up to half their own body weight each day. Worms will breed to ensure the optimum amount of worms in a compost bin and can double their population in 90 days. Despite these fantastic skills worms inside a compost bin still need our help in the winter. During the cold weather worms will not eat as much and can even freeze if the temperature gets too low and the composting process can slow down and even stop. In order to stop the temperature getting too low you can insulate your bin by wrapping it in bubble wrap, carpet, an old duvet or an old hot water cylinder jacket. Alternatively line the inside of your bin with thick cardboard. The cardboard will compost down eventually but will probably survive the winter. This is even more important with a wormery as they are smaller than compost bins and therefore it is harder for the worms to find warmth. To keep your worms warm you should prepare your wormery for winter by leaving as much compost in the wormery as possible and, if you can, moving the wormery inside a shed or greenhouse. A wormery can be insulated in the same way as a ‘normal’ bin but make sure that air can still circulate.
