elcome to the April edition.

Spring at last, and time to make that fresh start we’ve been putting off since the beginning of 2015! In the old days, spring cleaning was about cleaning the accumulated winter soot and grime from your home; opening up the windows and making it smell fresh and clean again. Walking two oversized dogs over the winter months of rain and mud also add substance to the need for a deep clean. As well as spring cleaning our homes, spring is also a great time to look at ourselves. What about learning a new skill, starting a course, visiting somewhere new or simply joining a local group? There are so many places to visit with fantastic food, amazing views and our fresh Yorkshire air. Our gardens will be coming to life this month so we’ve devoted a number of pages in this month’s magazine to businesses who can help give your garden a fresh look this spring. My other half will be out scarifying (!) the lawn, in pursuit of the perfect stripes, whilst bemoaning the rise of rotary mowers. I’ll look forward to having a coffee or glass of wine on the patio! Easter weekend brings church services, fairs, art

exhibitions and markets. With the improvement in the weather (I hope) and a never ending list of local events, there’s really no excuse for not making the best of the bank holiday weekend. At the Handy Mag, we are very proud of how we support our local area. It is the mix of business advertising alongside free community/charity groups and events that makes the magazines what they are. We receive great feedback from both businesses and community groups and as a reader of the magazines, please remember to tell businesses that you found them here. Next month in our May editions, we’ll be focussing on local food. Until next month...

GARDENING

Grow Your Own By Pippa Greenwood you can brighten up your supper table with some good looking vegetables, home grown in containers.

I’m a great fan of home grown vegetables, particularly as growing my own allows me to choose to eat only organically grown fruit and vegetables, which are free from chemical pesticides. Even if you only have a tiny patio garden or backyard,

It is important to use large containers. Smaller ones may look fine but most vegetables need an evenly moist compost around their roots at all times, and so a larger volume of compost is much easier to look after. They will need to be positioned in a sunny spot as vegetables won’t crop well in a gloomy position. Growing bags will do but they don’t exactly look good. In addition, they often seem to contain pretty poor compost and, when it comes to keeping growing bags adequately watered, they are nothing short

Make sure that the containers are well supplied with drainage holes, and that you have a layer of broken pots on top. I suggest using either a standard multi-purpose or a multi-purpose compost mixed with a loam based compost – both produce good crops and are fairly easy to maintain. You can incorporate some controlled release fertiliser granules or feed regularly with a liquid feed. There are lots of different vegetables that can be grown in containers but sometimes getting the right variety can make all the difference to how well they perform. Check labels or seed catalogues as those particularly well suited to life in a pot are described as so. If you like home grown beans you can use any variety of dwarf French bean, or if you prefer, a runner. The miniature runner, ‘Hestia’, has pretty red and white flowers and doesn’t need a support to climb. Cucumbers can be grown in pots; choose a variety such as ‘Patio Pick’ which should manage to crop well despite its small size. Provided you have a large and deep container then courgettes are also worth a

try, and do remember to keep them well fed. If you like hot pepper and have a sheltered, warm spot then try the crazy looking, heavy cropping ‘Medusa’ or the pretty but hot ‘Etna’. Salad crops can all be grown in a growing bag or other container, and are guaranteed to look good. For some really wacky colour try growing the rich-red stemmed Ruby Chard or ‘Bright Lights’ chard with stems in pink, orange, red, yellow and white. Plenty of food and water is a must, and I tend to use a high potash liquid tomato feed, which works a treat. To keep your pots free from slug and snail attacks, try using sticky-backed copper tape stuck in a complete ring around the top of the pot or planter. How to make your Conservatory feel like a Proper Room

I

f you’ve ever tried to use your conservatory in the winter, you’ll know that it can feel like a cold, damp and dismal part of the house.

In all the glossy conservatory sales catalogues, the sun is always shining, the garden is blooming and everyone is having fun being in the bright and clean ‘new room’. The reality is that most conservatories are too hot to use in comfort in the summer, and certainly too cold to use in the winter. Condensation can be a problem in the winter, and it’s too bright to watch a tv in there in the summer. And when it rains, the noise can be deafening! Most conservatories have been built as temporary structures and usually as a less expensive alternative to an extension. This means that they don’t comply with the building regulations that an extension would have to do especially in terms of the thermal efficiency. The team at local specialists Inceil talk to homeowners every day who want to be able to use 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Before

their conservatory all year round and not on the handful of days when the temperature is just right! Their cost-effective solution is to fit an insulated ceiling fitted to the existing roof structure in just 1 or 2 days. The new plastered ceiling follows the contours of the existing roof and uses the most thermally dynamic insulation available. Your conservatory will feel like a proper room with a better temperature year round. And you don’t have to do anything to the external roof. It’s important when having any works done that you are happy with the people working in your home. Customers frequently comment on how polite and friendly everyone is in the Inceil team – and that they cleaned up when they had finished! On the Inceil informative website www.inceil.co.uk you can watch an installation video which shows exactly how the process works, and request a free survey and quote. Or give them a call on 01904 891936. In just one or two days, your conservatory can be transformed into a comfortable and usable part of your home. JEN’S COLUMN

Chocolate was born in York By Jen Grimble

During the Industrial Revolution, while many cities capitalised on steel and fibres, York took a different route. Today, our city is brimming with reminders of this and with Easter and the annual Chocolate Festival approaching, we delve into York’s sweet history. York’s 19th century economic success was helped by several locals, who by chance, experimented with confessionary. The earliest was Mary Tuke, whose grocery shop was transformed into a tea and drinking-chocolate establishment in the 1730’s. Tuke’s started producing cocoa in 1785 and almost 80 years later Henry and Joseph Rowntree turned that business into a leading chocolate manufacturer. Later, during the Christmas of 1914, Rowntree’s chocolate was shipped to the local soldiers who were fighting abroad, by the then Lord Mayor. Resident women took positions in factories, establishing York as a place of longevity and innovation. At its height, Rowntree’s Cocoa Works employed almost 15,000 locals, keeping families afloat and stabilising our economy. Our other famous chocolate maker was originally a chemist. When Joseph Terry married in 1823, he joined his in-laws’ confessionary business, but it was not until 1867 that Terry’s began making chocolate. You can still see their family name branded in St Helen’s Square, where their shop and café once dominated local life. In 1926, the now legendary landmark of the Terry’s factory was built, remaining operational until its closure in 2005. Thanks to our rail connections and our position between the North and South, York found industrial success, but luck played its part. If Joseph Terry had never married, or Mary Tuke had not opened her shop, modern York would be entirely different. These families secured our futures and gave us our incredible history. Now Nestlé, who bought Rowntree’s in 1988, stands as our last strand of production, but our love of chocolate will forever continue.

ost people are aware that Inheritance tax and care costs can wipe out a lifetime of savings. If you are concerned about this you obviously need reassurance that your adviser fully understands this complex area of advice. I’m a member of the “Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA)”, a not-for-profit organisation that helps people find trusted advisers who understand financial needs in later life. SOLLA advisers undertake additional training to gain specialist knowledge and develop real expertise before they are awarded this independent accreditation. I recently attended a SOLLA workshop when psychologist, Lynda Shaw, explored the difficulties of advising elderly clients about financial matters. Lynda has undertaken significant research on the role that emotions play in our actions and behaviour in everyday life. Lynda gave a fascinating and, to

That explains a lot about why people don’t put plans in place to make sure their family, and not the Tax Man, benefits from their life savings. It’s not an immediate threat so you ignore it. And when it is an immediate threat – in other words you’re on your last legs – it’s too late to do anything about it. That’s why the Tax Man collects billions in this tax every year. Unfortunately, I can’t do anything to change human behaviour. But I can keep banging the drum that Inheritance Tax is pretty much a voluntary tax. As the late Roy Jenkins, MP, put it “Inheritance Tax is a voluntary tax payable by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue”. The fact is there are simple and legal ways to avoid this unfair tax. That’s why I’ve written a book “37 Legal Ways to Slash £thousands off your Inheritance Tax bill”, normally priced £5.99. But I’m giving copies away to Handy Mag readers. Simply email helen@pen-life.co.uk, call 01904 661140 or visit www.slash-iht.co.uk

Delve into Dalby

T

here’s loads to be really excited about at Dalby Forest this spring including the arrival of Superworm and the Tour de Yorkshire road cycle race. Why not join in the fun?

Say hello to Superworm!

From the creators of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, the hugely popular children’s story Superworm will come to life at Dalby Forest. Superworm tells the story of how a superhero worm and his mini-beast friends defeat the villainous Wizard Lizard. From 28th March until the end of October, families can enjoy our Superworm activity trail. We’d suggest allowing around an hour for kids and big kids to enjoy it! An activity pack will be available to buy on-site.

Tour De Yorkshire!

We’re head over heels happy that that the Tour de Yorkshire will be coming through Dalby Forest on Friday 1 May on its way from Bridlington to Scarborough. A Fresh Look at

Conexo Travel

Conexo Travel is a family fun business and has been based in Haxby for 6 years. Owned by David Carruthers and Diane French, Conexo has secured a place for itself in the community matching the holiday needs of the local area to the thousands of offers and holidays on their books. This year, with the holiday booking season in full swing, David and Diane felt the time was right for a new look and a website that really showcases what they can achieve for their customers. David says “We have a massive advantage over the major high street agencies who want to sell you their in-house products whether that is right for you the client or not. We are an independent travel agency and can find you a holiday from one of over 400 tour operators we deal with. We do sell their holidays as well so if it is right for you, and at the right price, we tell you. If genuine holiday choice is important to you, look no further than Conexo Travel. There are now thousands of pages on our website with a huge variety of holidays to suit all requirements and budgets. And if you still can’t find what you’re looking for here, feel free to drop in as we always have more options in the shop. Many places no 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

longer offer brochures for you to peruse at home. We have a full range in the shop.” One thing you will not find on Conexo’s website is online booking. If you’re interested in a particular holiday, David and Diane will search their system for the best price for you. This means that it might not necessarily be with the same company you saw online but it will be perfect for your requirements. To most people, a holiday is a big investment, the one time in a year when you get away from busy lives with families or friends. It should be special. Giving away a huge chunk of your hard-earned cash to an online company you cannot see and will never meet, on probably the biggest thing most of us buy all year, seems risky to say the least! Faced with a vast choice, like many of us, you search for a holiday online: Review sites, hotel sites, flights and all-in packages. But have you stopped to consider the risks of booking your holiday? When things look too good to be true, they often are. Horror stories of half-built hotels, hidden costs and companies collapsing are many. Why not drop in and talk to your local travel agent and let David and Diane take care of your holiday investment. When you book a trip through Conexo, your contract is with them as local travel agents, and they take 100% responsibility for your holiday.

If anything untoward happens, your finances are protected and you will not be stranded abroad. Conexo Travel are members of ABTA and part of the Hays Travel group who apply stringent conditions to all of the tour operators they work with - if they cannot guarantee the safety of client’s cash, Hays Travel, and therefore Conexo, will not work with them. Hays Travel insist that all tour operators are correctly bonded. David and Diane have a wealth of knowledge about holidays, where to go and what to do when you are there. Why not drop in and have a browse through their brochures and have a chat to David or Diane.

With a full picture of just about every holiday under the sun, and every deal around, Conexo Travel can ensure your holiday goes like a dream.

BURGLARY

T

he last couple of months has seen an increase in reported burglaries across the North of York. A large amount of work has been done, and several arrests made but we would like to bring this to your attention and reinforce advice that has been passed in the past. Whilst the majority of burglaries have occurred overnight there have been some that have taken place during the day whilst occupants have been away from the address. A number of these offences have occurred when properties have been left insecure either overnight or for a short time during the day. Simply by locking doors and windows and removing items of value from display you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

It is not a waste of Police time reporting such incidents as prompt reporting of these things can prevent a crime from happening which is always preferable to dealing with an offence after the fact. In short, be aware of your own personal security at home, do not present any burglars with an easy opportunity. Remain vigilant and report anything that you feel is suspicious and with your assistance we can tackle this issue. By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637

R MBE U L P & R TILE

Those responsible for these crimes will be opportunistic thieves and will take advantage of any unlocked doors or windows that they come across. We have previously recommended that residents set up an account on a Website called IMMOBILISE, where you can record any items of value that you own with serial numbers or other identifying marks. It does not take long to do and is a very simple process and gives the Police a much better chance of identifying the rightful owners of property that we recover. It also assists in any prosecution if we can identify items in a persons possession as being stolen. We would ask that all residents remain vigilant around their properties. If you see anybody or anything suspicious report it to us on the 101 Telephone number. As a local resident you are perfectly placed to recognise when something is 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Even the most by Christine Parker fabulous dress or outfit can BDS (GDC 72136) be undone by chipped or stained teeth so here is some sound advice to get them ready for the camera. Try to plan well in advance if you need braces. For teeth that are poorly positioned or crowded, orthodontics (braces) may be the best answer. This type of treatment can take up to 2 years , some quicker forms are available which concentrate just on the front teeth and can take as little as 6 months. This type of treatment can transform smiles which have quite major irregularities. If you do not require, or want braces tooth whitening can significantly improve their appearance. This must be provided by a registered dentist , beauticians are not legally able to offer tooth whitening services. A full dental check should be provided before bleaching takes place. Never buy materials over the internet, they have been known to cause permanent damage and you have no idea of what is in them. If your teeth are chipped or stained they could benefit from professional cleaning, or cosmetic white fillings, veneers and crowns to enhance their appearance and colour. Gaps can be treated by implants, bridges or a bespoke denture, these can all provide a natural looking aesthetic result. LAMINITIS

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

M

ost people who have spent any significant amount of time with horses will be familiar with the condition of laminitis. Whilst laminitis is most commonly seen in small, overweight ponies that have had too much spring grass, it is a serious condition affecting horses of all breeds, ages and sizes, and can also be caused by a number of other conditions such as septic shock, retained placentas in mares, and Cushing’s Disease in older horses and ponies.

Laminitis is caused either by the actions of various hormones, or by substances called endotoxins circulating around the bloodstream, which are produced either from the fermentation of lush grass or from bacterial action elsewhere in the body. This causes an alteration of the blood supply in the foot, leading to damage of the sensitive laminae which attach the hoof wall to the bony structures of the foot and particularly to the pedal bone. In the early stages of the condition this damage is limited to inflammation, however in severe cases the tissues can be

PEN BLOCKING CRISIS AT CATS PROTECTION A crisis is developing at Cats Protection’s York Adoption Centre where unwanted feline pensioners are blocking the pens needed for the constant intake of younger cats. The percentage of long term senior citizen residents currently stands at around 15% of the Centre’s population, a figure that staff see rising year on year. As Centre manager James Hodgkinson explains, older cats tend not to be as popular with potential owners as younger cats and are often overlooked. “While 10 years ago the household moggy was expected to live to around 13, today’s life expectancy is much higher and many cats survive to their lateteens and early-20s in remarkably good health,” said James. “Although this is good news for them, it places us under massive strain. It’s such a shame because their wandering days are behind them so they can offer extremely valuable companionship.” Older cats currently at the centre who are in desperate need of new homes are 10 year old Florence, a 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

gorgeous lady with a beautiful velvety coat (featured in January’s Handy Mag) and handsome and friendly fluff ball Fred, pictured here. “Nobody wants these poor cats to stay here longer than they have to but sadly they have nowhere else to go,” said James. “Although we do our very best to care for them, life in a cat pen is no substitute for a permanent home so I would urge people to consider adopting one of our golden oldies.” York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day 11am to 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. Laminitis can show as a variety of signs, from a horse that is slightly uneven in shifting its weight on its forelegs, progressing to horses that are increasingly uncomfortable and reluctant to move, and in severe cases horses that lie down and refuse to get up because the pain in their feet is so severe. Veterinary advice should be sought immediately, because the longer a case is left, the more severe the damage is likely to become. Unfortunately a number of severe laminitis cases do have to be humanely destroyed each year, simply because the damage to the hoof is too great, and it is impossible to relieve the pain and restore normal foot structure. Treatment involves strict rest and the use of painkillers and drugs to alter the flow of blood in the hoof, and removal of the initial cause. X-rays are often taken of laminitic feet in order to assess the degree of damage to the hoof and to assess what further preventative and repair work needs to be undertaken. The vet will usually liaise closely with the farrier in order to reconstruct laminitic hooves and

As with any condition, prevention is better than cure, so if you know that your horse or pony has had laminitis in the past it is worth taking preventative measures. Severe restrictions on grazing for overweight ponies is necessary to prevent overload with sugar-rich young grass, and very regular observation and examination of horses or ponies’ feet for any signs of laminitis. There are also a number of alternative feeds available for horses that are particularly prone to laminitis. If you have any questions about laminitis, or are worried that your horse or pony may be at risk of developing the condition, please don’t hesitate to contact Mike Jones BVetMed Cert EP MRCVS, veterinary surgeon, who will be only too happy to help.

COOKING HOMEMADE HONEYCOMB

If you love a Crunchie bar then being able to make honeycomb at home will be a revelation to you. On its own or dipped in chocolate, it is a wonderful treat.

INGREDIENTS:

• 325g caster sugar • 50g honey • 125g liquid glucose • 15g bicarbonate of soda • 50ml water

METHOD:

This is one of the easiest recipes to make but when you tell people you’ve made your own honeycomb, they won’t fail to be impressed. The main thing you need to remember is that you need a really big saucepan with high sides; you are dealing with a caramel at around 150oc which can burn and be really hard to clean off stovetops. Handled with care it poses no problem though. Have a tray at least 20cm x 30cm lined with silicone paper or a silicone mat ready. Place all the ingredients except the bicarbonate of soda in a large saucepan with a thick base. Using a long handled whisk cook over a medium heat until it turns a light golden colour but not too dark, stirring gently. Add the bicarbonate of soda and whisk in for a few seconds until completely absorbed. The mix will foam and rise up the pan, so do be careful. Pour the mix out onto the lined tray. Allow to cool completely before touching. Soak the pan and all the remaining honeycomb will dissolve easily. Break into pieces and enjoy. You can store it in an airtight tub for a few weeks.

EMILY... ON EASTER

EXAM STRESS I remember the more innocent times when Easter meant Easter: a nice two week break with nothing more to worry about than the ever present threat of Easter egg theft courtesy of my two sisters. But for the past few years, Easter has become a marker of the end of learning and the start of revision. Suddenly, those exams that seemed so far away are hurtling towards you at a startling speed. Scarier still, it marks the time where it is all down to you. The teachers that have worked so hard all year to pump information into our marshmallow-like young minds pass the baton of responsibility across to us students. Whether it’s A Levels or GCSEs, Easter is a stressful time for many young people. I vividly recall my first exam season, where my year was called into the end of term assembly and told that we should be doing five hours of revision a day in preparation for our GCSEs. Eek! The look of sheer dread that was passed from student to student spoke volumes about our experiences to come. It’s easy to become lost in a constant cycle of exams and resits and revision, but only recently has it hit me that this is my last exam season. This is my last exam filled Easter. At home, anyway! With University places dependant on my results, this is the first time that exams have had any tangible consequence. Now is the time to keep calm, focus and study harder than I ever have before. Parents; please do not take this as an excuse to not buy your teenagers any chocolate this Easter holiday. I don’t know the science behind it, but I can assure you that it helps! Emily

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

HAPPY NEW TAX YEAR!!

I

thought I’d have a sneaky peek to see what day of the week New (Tax) Year’s Day was this year, and to my amazement I saw that 6 April was now officially a Bank Holiday! Finally, my years of petitioning to 10 Downing Street had paid off and we could celebrate on New (Tax) Year’s Eve without the worry of having to be in the office the next morning. My excitement was short-lived, as it dawned on me that it was in fact Easter Monday, which just happens to be on the same day!

As we enter the new tax year, it’s the perfect time to take stock of your finances, review your business or even take the plunge and start your own business. Below are some ideas for New Tax Year’s Resolutions.

New Tax Year’s Resolutions Make time to make a business plan

– as any business owner will say (me included) there aren’t enough hours in the day, however, every

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

business needs some form of business plan. Make sure you set time aside to think about your aims, set realistic goals and consider how you can achieve these.

Get your books in order

– the thought of bookkeeping may send shivers down your spine, but good records can give you a picture of how your business is performing, pinpoint problems and identify potential opportunities.

Keep ALL your receipts

– you will be surprised how those small amounts you spend on stamps, stationery and petrol soon add up. Make sure you keep receipts for anything you buy for your business - these can help reduce your tax bill.

Make an early start on your Tax Return – by keeping your books in order, and keeping ALL your receipts, you would have all the information to hand to make a start on your Tax Return.

Budget for your tax bill

– by making an early start on your Tax Return, you will be able to get an idea of how much your tax will be well before the payment deadline and consider any tax planning. This way you don’t get any nasty surprises!

Review your business structure

– once you know how much your tax bill is, you may want to look at whether your business is structured in the best way, e.g. you could save tax by trading as a Limited Company.

If you are thinking of starting your own business or would like advice and how to get the most from your current business in the New Tax Year, contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director (no obligation) email phil.kitchen@pclg.co.uk, call 01904 558300 or visit www.pclg.co.uk for more information.

By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMagazine.co.uk) when it comes to getting your family home safely on icy roads.

HONDA CR-V

The extent of your off-roading might simply be bumping up the kerb outside school, but it’s always nice to know the car of your choice can handle the rough stuff should you ever need it to. Here we’ve listed a couple of off-roaders. They’re are fully equipped to take you off the beaten track should you want them to, but are just as prepared

The Honda CR-V makes a great case for family buyers – and it’s just as capable of hitting the road less travelled. Stylish looks and new efficient diesel engines, capable of up to 62.8mpg, make this 4x4 extremely appealing. Combine that with masses of boot space, folding rear seats for extra flexibility and extensive safety features, and it’s ideal for a growing family.

VOLVO XC90

massive impression. A striking and stylish car to make any Range Rover driver think twice, it’s packed with Volvo’s latest safety and crash-prevention technology. Space is generous inside, with seats that can fold in various formations to suit your needs. It doesn’t come cheap though!

Is your child living with allergies? New Support Group in Haxby.

Llywelyn’s story

by Alethea, his Mum “As parents of a lovely little boy who is severely allergic, we know only too well the difficulty of looking after a severely allergic child, and decided to use this knowledge to the best of our ability by setting up a support group for parents of children with severe allergy through the Anaphylaxis Campaign. Llywelyn is a happy seven year old with multiple severe allergies. He had his first severe allergic reaction when he was just four months old. A very frightening time for us all. Llywelyn was rushed to hospital after eating a baby food that contained traces of cows milk, his face and lips swelled up and blisters covered his wrists and arms. A blood test confirmed that he had severe allergy which meant he was at risk of anaphylaxis to milk, egg and nuts. He needed an epi pen and regular antihistamine to keep him safe. Wherever we took Llywelyn out, we had to wipe surfaces, play areas, to prevent him from getting

rashes from just touching surfaces where tiny traces of milk may have been. But we managed with antihistamine, epi pens and many thousands of baby wipes to keep him safe. Over the years we discovered he also had severe allergy to horse hair, sesame and kiwi. Keeping him safe and protected from constant skin reactions has been extremely harrowing. When he was very little he would be constantly covered in rashes from touching tables, surfaces (that we had already thoroughly wiped down) - taking him out to a cafe was so stressful we avoided many activities that involved foods, including birthdays and family occasions. Many people didn’t understand the severity of Llywelyns allergies, and in all honesty its only now, after having a little girl with no allergies at all, do I understand what it’s like to have an ‘allergy free’ child. I was a nurse at the time of Llywelyns first reaction, but I put my career to one side in order to care for my very allergic child. Llywelyn is the kindest most lovely little boy who bravely tries his best at everything in life. We are very proud parents.”

WHAT IS ANAPHYLAXIS?

Anaphylaxis is an extreme and severe allergic reaction. The whole body is affected, often within minutes of exposure to the substance which causes the allergic reaction (allergen) but sometimes after hours.
