HGHS NEWSLETTER Hamilton Girls’ High School

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL 2019 has been a stunning year, with many highlights within the classroom, on the sports field, across the arts and through a myriard of leadership and co curricular opportunities. The year ended with a buzz of activity across the junior school.

MARIE GORDON Principal

Our Year 9 students have enjoyed a week of “MAD - Making a Difference” activities This week is based on the educational concept of Design Thinking. Design Thinking draws on logic, imagination, intuition and systematic reasoning to explore possibilities of what could be - and to create desired outcomes that benefit the end user. The focus this year is on “How might we make a difference in our community?” Amidst the fun, exciting challenges, MAD week is about student leadership, collaborating, having fun, problem solving and being creative and innovative. The majority of our Year 10 students attended an EOTC camp at MiCamp, based at Lake Taupo and Whakamaru. Students participated in rock climbing, team building activities, drama skits, kayaking, bmx rides, confidence rope courses and many other events. This was a great opportunity to spend the last week together with their core class, and certainly there was a lot of laugher and some great memories. As this is our last newsletter for the year, I’d like to thank all of our parents, caregivers and whānau for your support and commitment to our school over this past year. The successes we enjoy at HGHS across sports, music and academic fields would not be possible without the dedication of so many people – staff, parents, coaches and volunteers. We appreciate all of the hours that have provided such incredible opportunities for our students outside of the classroom. For those students and families who are leaving us this year, we wish you well on your journey and thank you for being a part of our Hamilton Girls’ High School whānau. As the year closes, we are also saying farewell to several staff members, and again our very best wishes go with them. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas, and a safe, relaxing holiday break with your families. We look forward to seeing you all in the new year. Marie Gordon

[At the discretion of the teacher, students may be allowed to access their phone for a defined period of time for such things as: using the camera, undertaking a Kahoot, using other functions such as the stopwatch, etc.] In an emergency, parents/caregivers should contact the main office who will quickly convey a message to students. REBECCA EARLY

Deputy Principal The Year 9's are currently preparing for MAD Week, which runs from the 2nd-5th of December. Making A Difference Week or MAD Week was started in 2017 as a way for student's to give back to the community by picking a topic as a class that they were passionate about and where they saw a need in the community. Our current Year 9's have all picked their Design Thinking Challenges and are working hard to immerse themselves in their chosen topics. It's been great to see the empathy in their Challenges, with groups working on challenges such as How might we contribute to the work of the Salvation Army in the lead up to Christmas? and How might we support cancer patients families during their stay in hospital? You are warmly invited to attend the Expo Day on the morning of the 5th December. This is an opportunity for your daughter and her class to take you through their Design Thinking Process. It is a celebration of all the hard work the class has undertaken over the last term. Paintings created by 9CA for The Serve

HGHS SPORTS AWARDS

SPORTS COUNCIL CAPTAIN Te Amai Hudson

Since year 9 I have been apart of the sporting culture at HGHS.Throughout my journey, I have come across many ups and downs. This year has been most challenging for me because in March I ruptured my second ACL playing for the Waikato Touch Open Women's team. I was upset beyond belief as I had just came back from my first ACL and thought about the fact that I am probably the first Girls High Sports Captain that couldn’t play sport for most of the year. Not being able to play my last year of school sport was definitely the toughest pill to swallow especially not being able to play my last games and tournaments with my friends I started my journey with. But from all this, being on the sideline has taught me resilience and has given me a new appreciation of sport. A quote that has helped me through all my challenges is “A minor setback paths the way for a major comeback”. This reminds me to not give up and that all the struggle and tears will be worth it in the long run. If you persevere and keep going you will come back stronger and better. It also showed me all the work that the coaches, managers, parents, volunteers put in behind the scenes with their time, effort and support to make sure the team or individual performs the best they can. Without you guys, we wouldn’t be able to play the sport we love and achieve our goals.

TERM 4 / WEEK 8

TERM 4 2019

Coming in as a year 9 student I looked up to all the sports captains before me and aspired to be the HGHS sports captain following in the footsteps of Jazmin Hotham who I admired a lot. This role has presented many opportunities to build leadership skills and has been both a challenging and rewarding experience especially when I sat on the side of the netball court helping manage the Premier team. It was very difficult watching and not being able to play but being involved with my sporting teams and the support from friends, family and coaches I have still felt as if I am apart of the team. The sporting culture within Hamilton Girls’ High School is so strong with many of our teams and individuals competing at a high level and achieving great results. I believe sport helps build character which shapes you into a great person and helps you make lifelong friends. Having a strong culture and environment within the players and coaches is very important in the success of the team. All the successes we have had at HGHS this year shows that the culture within our school continues to build. Being able to witness the growth of all the girls’ involvement in sport and the successes of all of them over the years has definitely been memorable. Girls High prides itself on the many sports we have to offer and that we do extremely well at a local, regional and national level. I would especially like to acknowledge all those who have made NZ teams and who have won national titles. Lastly, I would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Whaanga and Mrs Rakete for all their guidance and support throughout this year to make me be the best I can be for this role and all their hard work behind the scenes. To my parents who are probably in another country right now, your continuous support through my lowest of lows and being great role models for me to look up to and have helped me shape myself into the young woman I am today. I couldn’t be more grateful for all you do for me and just believing in me in the times I didn’t myself. To all my friends, thank you for just being there for me and always showing me a good time. Girls High sport will forever hold a place in my heart and the memories I’ve made over the years I’ll cherish forever. As my school sports chapter finally comes to an end, I hope to pass on the knowledge I have gained over the years to the ones just starting their journey. Thank you.

CAREERS A number of our students recently attended two career events focussing on the Trades. Got a Trade Speedmeet – was a chance for students to engage with employers who were actually looking for apprentices in a range of areas. BCITO Day – was a day offering a range of interactive workshops for the students to try their hands at brick laying, wall papering and many more activities.

CAREERS Pathway conversations Now that the year is coming to an end the holiday break can be a great opportunity for students to source part time work, work experience or even volunteer work. Any sort of work experience is invaluable to young people as it can give a snapshot view of a typical work day in a certain area, plus it is a chance to develop new skills and broaden their knowledge of other jobs. The holiday break is also a time to reflect on how the year has gone for them academically and personally. Plus it is a time to look ahead and set some goals for next year. For senior students it is about pathway decisions once their time at school is over. The CareersNZ website - www.careers.govt.nz is an extremely good resource for all career related information. It offers advice for students and parents on career decision making. To start the year with a plan and direction can have a motivating influence on engagement and achievement. Tertiary study – if students have enrolled with a tertiary institution to study in 2020 then they can access Student Job Search - www.sjs.co.nz to seek employment over the summer break. They will just need proof of their enrolment. The Waikato Trades Academy students ended the year with great success – students who were part of the engineering programme completed their motorbikes and were allowed to take them home. Students also completed studies in – Sport Science, Construction, Cookery and Agriculture. Yr 2 Automotive Engineering student – Charm Atkins- Haddon, was also awarded a Certificate of Excellence for her exceptional work and attitude throughout the year.

A reminder to like the Hamilton Girls’ High School Careers facebook page as we continually post opportunities and information for students and parents. https://www.facebook.com/ HamiltonGirlsHighSchoolCareersDepartment/

The event seeks to promote the benefits of up-cycling, reducing waste in landfill and to inspire a move away from the worldwide epidemic of fast fashion and mindless consumption. Recreate will demonstrate that highend fashion can be made from upcycled materials and that if we all take small steps in this direction, we can make a great change. Entrants must use predominantly pre-worn clothing, accessories and items which have been purchased from a Waikato HospiceShop to create their entry. Designers are encouraged to design with creativity, sustainability and by reducing waste.

TECHNOLOGY TEXTILES

The Recreate Fashion show was held on Sunday, August 25 at Clarence street theatre as a fundraiser for Hospice Waikato. 34 HGHS students entered this show and showcased outfits they had designed and made as part of their assessment for the year. We were very successful producing the overall winner of the Recreate show. Our students also won 3 out of 5 categories, with a second and third placing in one category and 2 semifinalists. The show was an exciting experience, challenging our students to bring their design talents to the stage and providing a wonderful contribution to community service, raising much needed funds for cancer patients. We are thrilled to be able to offer Textiles students the chance to enter the Recreate show again in 2020.

WHATS BEEN HAPPENING IN THE TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT Year 9 Asian Inspired Pop Up Container Café Week 6 saw our Year 9 Food Technology students present their final Asian Inspired Café food. Each group prepared 10 servings of their chosen product that had been trialled and developed over the past 5 weeks. The results below show just some of what was produced. Year 10 Café Food Year 10 Food Technology students have worked through a sequence of units of work including: Love Veges, Breakfasts, Burgers, which all had an underlying theme of Café Food. To round off the year, we planned and served savoury and sweet café food to some invited guests at a lunch in Week 6. Students learnt about the importance of Table setting and table etiquette as well as presentation of food and catering for special dietary requirements. The resulting food was enjoyed by family and teachers at the sit down café lunch.

TERM 4 With the summer holiday coming up and the associated end of year activities, there is a lot happening throughout term 4. As the end point of the academic year fast approaches, preparation for the final external examinations in midNovember is in full swing. Recent weeks have seen completion of the last of the internal assessments and revision including extra tutorials. See your teacher or Daily Notices for details. Junior students have been busy with their own Junior Placement Exam preparation. Following this, there is still one last unit of work to be taught and assessed before the end of the year. Please support your daughter to remain engaged with her classes and attend regularly as we approach the end of a busy year. Girls continue to be challenged by the distraction of phones including social media use during class time. Teachers are noticing more students being distracted by their phones and this increase in social media use can have an impact on their wellbeing. Staff encourage students to develop ways to manage this and expect phones to be out of sight and switched off during class time unless otherwise arranged with the teacher beforehand. Senior students can return their text books on the day of the exam. Junior students will require their text books until they have completed their course. Individual class teachers will inform Junior students when text books can be returned.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT 2019 HGHS COLOUR RUN By Krysten Stevens

On Tuesday 15th October, the Health and PE committee with the help of The NZ Kiwi Challenge Foundation held the first ever Colour Run at HGHS. A Colour Run is a fun event that is full of excitement all round and participants always finish doused in an array of colour. The first ever Colour Run at HGHS was a success despite having to reschedule once due to weather conditions. Over six months of planning went into the organisation of the Colour Run. Having led the committee that held this event has been an amazing experience and it has been awesome to be able to work with The NZ Kiwi Challenge Foundation who are passionate about working with schools to promote health and well-being. The Colour Run was fun to organise and it was clear that those that participated in the run really enjoyed the experience and would happily participate in a future Colour Run.The teachers also got very involved in the Colour Run, having being more covered in colour than some of the students!! Overall the Colour Run was a really great event that many people enjoyed. A big thanks to Mrs Johnstone, Josh Lyon (Founder of NZ Kiwi Challenge Foundation), committee members Ashley, Savannah, Gia, and Mya and all the teachers that volunteered to help out on the day!

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Y12 PHYSICS There are three Y12 Physics classes who are preparing to sit their external assessments. This photo shows a simulation of a nuclear chain reaction which was demonstrated by Dr Simmonds for her Y12 Physics class. The students learn about nuclear fission and fusion for one of their internal assessments.

PASIFIKA Warm Pasifika Greetings With this being the final newsletter for the year the Pasifika Mentoring team wish to take the time to say a collective thank you to all those who helped make this a successful year for our Pasifika family. In particular, we wish to thank the following: •

Mrs Gordon for allowing us the room to grow the Pasifika Council, especially in the area of service where the girls spent a very productive Saturday earlier in the year as volunteers for the biennial Nesian Festival.

Mrs Tautari and the Arts Council for inviting the Pasifika Choir to participate in the inaugural Te Puawai Arts Festival by singing at the opening of two special Arts events. We recognise and appreciate the opportunity to serve our school community by sharing our talents where we can.

To the teachers who have mentored our Pasifika students throughout the year, we say ‘thank you’ and hope you will continue working closely with our students in 2020. To the HGHS staff for the patience you have shown when sometimes, the girls get side-tracked by life issues but you are still waiting to help them succeed in school; you have our appreciation.

The Pasifika Council, led by Maitland our hardworking Pasifika Prefect and her two councillors, Taru and Anika-Lee, thank you for your diligence and willingness to serve our community. We are aware of the many hours put in behind the scenes so that we could enjoy many activities both in school and in the wider community.

The Pasifika families for the on-going support of the programmes your daughters have participated in. We look forward to meeting with more of you in 2020.

And last but certainly not least, to the Pasifika students. In Mrs Gordon’s first prize-giving speech as principal, she explained that one of her goals was to ensure parents and girls would make HGHS their school of choice. You have certainly helped fulfil this by being here. We encourage you to take every opportunity to make the most of your learning while you are at HGHS.

To all, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season and hope to see you all, ready for another positive year in 2020. Tofa soifua The Pasifika Mentoring Team

MUSIC

ENGLISH

After a very busy beginning of the term, it is good to sit, pause and reflect on the strides the Music Department has made this year.

The English Department has had a very busy year consolidating teaching practice and implementing changes to the programmes we have offered. However, overarching all of these practices we are aware that the most important business we have is adding value to student learning. With that, a few thank yous must be given.

We were happy with the opportunities Mrs Gordon gave us to encourage active participation in the Arts by introducing Fortnight Fridays. This gave all students the opportunity to share their passion for performance with the student body, and we saw a lot of talent. We encourage the girls to keep playing, singing, songwriting and being engaged with other performance-related activities because it is good to see how strong this is at HGHS. The Music Council ably led by Denae and her two counsellors, Paris and Hannah, must be applauded for the long hours they spent making sure things were always available not only to our students but also to the staff. Although we will miss their leadership we look forward to our leaders in 2020 and the creative energy they will bring to the department. To our very talented music students who participated in the various competitions and festivals, we say a heartfelt thank you for sharing your talents with us so willingly. Our music programme would not be as developed as it is without the hard work from a small but energetic group that not many people know about - our itinerant teachers. We express our thanks for the time they spend, often outside of their allotted hours, preparing the girls to perform their very best work. With their dedication, we saw success at the National Barbershop Competition, the Regional Big Sing Competition and also the Orchestra and Band Festival. Now that the year has concluded we wish everyone a safe holiday and look forward to seeing you refreshed and ready for another year of adventure in the Music Department.

Nicola Wills, our wonderful English Prefect who worked alongside the teachers to ensure that the girls were aware of activities on offer, not only in the department but also across the school. We thank her for the time she spent leading her committee as well as working with Mrs Sydney. The English department staff who worked tirelessly this year to encourage excellence in learning, which included themselves as well as the students. Looking ahead to 2020, we will continue looking at ways we can add value to learning in the classroom. The final thank you is to the girls and for the most part, their willingness to let us teach what is our passion - English. We wish our students and staff a safe Christmas break and look forward to seeing you again in the new year.
