AT THE MOVIES REGAL HAMBURG PAVILION at 1949 Star Shoot Parkway will be installing king size recliners in place of its traditional seating.

The switch should be finalized by May. The move comes as a part of Regal Cinemas’ initiative to introduce recliners into theaters across the nation. In other movie theatre news around Lexington, the AmStar at Brannon Crossing is about to become a Movie Tavern. The transition will be finalized later this year. The only Movie Tavern location in Lexington is currently at 133 North Locust Hill Drive, off of Richmond Road.

EDUCATION FORCHT BANK (with headquarters in Lexington on Sir Barton Way) is giving away a $10,000 college scholarship to three lucky winners of their “Thanks for 30 Scholarship Contest,” in celebration of the bank’s 30th anniversary. The Thanks for 30 Scholarship Contest will run from March 1 – May 1, 2015 on Forcht Bank’s Official Facebook page, and is open to high school seniors residing in Forcht Bank’s 12-county service area who are planning to attend an accredited Kentucky-based college or university beginning in the fall of 2015. High school seniors may submit a video of 3 minutes or less, explaining how a $10,000 scholarship from Forcht Bank would help them reach their career goals, and how they intend to serve their community after graduating from college.

“Helping three young people attend college is one way we can give back to the communities we’ve served over the past 30 years,” said Forcht Bank President Tucker Ballinger.

The 10 finalist videos will be posted on Facebook to allow public voting starting April 6th.

FAYETTE COUNTY plans to build a new high school, designed for 1,800 students,

on 1970 Winchester Road. It is scheduled to open in Fall 2017 and construction could begin as early as June. According to information released by the Kentucky Board of Education this month, the school could have flexible learning spaces and a living lab to provide students with appropriate STEM and environmental sciences opportunities.

Among other innovations, there may be a college classroom structure, with teachers not having individual classrooms, and sharing office and workspace.

SHOPPING COSTCO may be on the verge of ending its exclusivity deal with American Express.

Earlier this month, American Express announced that it hadn’t been able to agree with Costco on terms for a renewal. This could mean that Costco customers will no longer be limited to exclusively using American Express cards. The current agreement is scheduled to end March 31, 2016.

Are you ready to shuffle?

Luck of the Irish is key for annual St. Patrick 3k run

ach March, Lexington becomes Irish as it celebrates St. Patrick’s Day in grand style with a parade, music and several events downtown. One of best known and well-loved events is the Shamrock Shuffle 3K race to benefit Lexington Habitat for Humanity.

This year will be the 9th annual running of the Shamrock Shuffle 3K held on Saturday, March 14 in downtown Lexington.

Race day registration will open at 6:30 a.m. at Level 1 of the Lexington Center.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. at the corner of Upper and Vine streets and will feature a bagpiper to kick off the race as well as a DJ to get the racers primed to shuffle. The family-friendly road race allows participants to run, walk or shuffle through the streets of downtown as a kick off to the

Alltech 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Lexington Irish Festival. There will also be an awards ceremony after the race and a “Best Costume” award presentation.

Over 3,000 participants are expected this year so it will be a great time and a great race. And runners will also be joined

by Lexington Habitat partner families who will become homeowners later this year.

There will also be lots of festive costumes as runners participate in the Shamrock Shuffle 3K costume contest. Last year a team dressed as lucky charms, and numerous leprechauns were crowd favorites!

Registration is currently open online at www.shamrockshuffle3k.com. If you prefer to register in person, you may do so on March 7 and March 13 at the Lexington Habitat ReStore located at 451 Southland Drive in Lexington from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. If you’re not interested in running or walking the race, but would like to help out with the

race, you can volunteer by simply visiting the race website and selecting “Volunteer” from the menu.

Following the race, the McTeggart Irish Dancers will perform at the Fifth Third Bank Pavilion at Cheapside Park until the start of the awards ceremony at approximately 8:45 a.m. Awards will be presented to age group winners as well as to the team category winners.

The Shamrock Shuffle 3K is also proud to be the kick-off race in the Grand Prix Race Series in Central Kentucky this year.

The race series features 7 regional races.

St. Patrick’s Schedule of Events MARCH 13-14 Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles hosts the LUCK OF THE IRISH ST. PATRICK’S DAY BUFFET DINNER AND TOUR, beginning at 6:30 pm with a tour of the distiller. Following that, a trip to the Dryer House features special Woodford Reserve cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and an Irish-inspired buffet which includes Round of Woodford corned beef.

MARCH 14 The 9th annual SHAMROCK SHUFFLE 3K RACE on Vine Street starts off at 8 am on March 14. The course begins at the intersection of Vine and Mill and goes out on Vine Street to Midland Avenue. The course continues back into downtown via Main Street and the finish line is at the intersection of Main and Upper. The course is closed to traffic. 100% of proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Then, the IRISH FESTIVAl begins in downtown Lexington at 11 am, and goes until 7 pm. The celebration will take place rain or shine, and all activities will be under tents in Cheapside Park and the Pavillion. There will be Irish music & dancers, Irish food & drinks, Irish imports, vendors, and children’s/family activities.

The 36th annual ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE is at 1 pm on Saturday March 14. It begins on Midland Avenue, marches down Main, turns on North Mill and ends at Short Street.

As part of the Irish Festival, WSR PIPES & DRUMs perform at 2 pm. Then, McTeggart Irish Dancers perform at 2:30 pm. Also as part of the festival, headline act Roger Drawdy and the Firestarters play at the Pavillion from 3 - 5 pm. The band was nominated Top Celtic Rock Group 2010, 2011, and 2012 by the Irish Music Association. They play a mix of traditional and original music, a style described as “air punching acoustic rockers” by Irish Music Magazine. Finally, Draper Family Band perform at 5 pm.

MCCARTHY’S IRISH PUB on 117 South Upper. Liam’s Fancy performs live. There will also be t-shirt and hat giveaways.

LYNAGH’S on 384 Woodland is hosting a St. Patrick’s Celebration from Saturday, March 14 through Tuesday, March 17. There will be Irish food and drink specials including corned beef & cabbage and colcannon. On Sunday night, March 15, there will be live Irish music, including Liam’s Fancy. Finally, Lynagh’s will be opening early on Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, at 8 am.

MARCH 17 On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, the tradition continues, and RADIO 80 play a special show at O’Neill’s on 2051 Richmond Road.

LYNAGH’S on 384 Woodland will open early on Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, at 8 am.

The Pub at the Fayette Mall opens at 9 am on St. Paddy’s Day for KEGS AND EGGS. There will also be feature specials, live entertainment, and drink specials. Ben Lacy plays 2 - 5 pm, with Irish rock band Liam’s Fancy following at 7:30 pm. Irish meal specials include Guinness stew, corned beef & cabbage, and corned beef rueben.

At 9 pm, SHAMROCK BAR AND GRILL at 154 Patchen Drive features traditional Irish fare (including corn beef and colcannon), drink specials, green beer, live entertainment, bagpipes, and lots more.

WALLACE STATION on 3854 Old Frankfort Pike will serve Irish favorites on St. Patrick’s Day, courtesy of Chef Ouita. Meals include Irish Stew, a corned beef panini with swiss, whole-grain mustard and Guinness-braised onions, and more.

LENT AND EASTER CALENDAR Easter Oratorio There will be two Lexington performances of the THY WILL BE DONE EASTER ORATORIO, produced by Dr. Everett McCorvey and starring Metropolitan Opera tenor Greg Turay as Jesus. One performance is at Tates Creek Presbyterian (on Rapid Run Drive) on March 25 at 4 pm. Another is at Cathedral of Christ The King (on Colony) on March 29 at 7:30 pm.

The Thy Will Be Done Easter Oratorio was composed by Lexington’s Angela Rice. The work received national attention when it was selected to be part of the Music Reading Session at the 2013 Montreat Presbyterian Music Conference.

Since the debut during the 2012 season, Rice has expanded the work from a cantata of 16 musical numbers to an oratorio of 30 pieces about Jesus’ life, ministry, crucifixion, resurrection and impact.

“I’ve tried to use the music to depict the emotions of the characters in the specific biblical contexts,” said Rice. “I hope that as you listen you can hear the love, surrender, obedience, despair, humility and awe – emotions that the characters experienced.”

Passion Play THE LEXINGTON PASSION PLAY is at Gardenside Baptist Church from March 20 - 22 and March 27 - 29. The play is a refreshed production of the passion of Jesus featuring a new script and updated music.

One of the Keynote Speakers is interior designer Matthew Carter. Carter was named as one of America’s Top Young Designers by House Beautiful.

The other Keynote Speaker is photographer Pieter Estersohn. Estersohn has photographed historic properties in five countries, and is on the board at Clermont, the 1775 house museum of the Livingston family in New York.

Additionally, there is unique container gardens, window boxes, and a marketplace to provide attendees with innovative ideas.

The Historic House and Garden Tour is an opportunity for the Northside Neighborhood to show off its qualities to the

istory built Lexington from its settlement in 1775 from a campsite at McConnell Springs to its evolution as the “Athens of the West.” Touring some of our region’s historic homes and gardens, you can see elegant architecture and gardens all over the Bluegrass with examples of Greek/Italianate, Federal, Georgian and Gothic architectures in Paris, Richmond, Lexington, Georgetown and Danville. The homes provide a glimpse of Lexington’s historic impact as an intellectual, agricultural, political and religious epicenter for Kentucky.

rittney Adams and husband Nick decided to “do something crazy,” as she describes their decision to buy Warrenwood Manor, restore it, start a business and expand their cattle farming operation. “Many of the original features of the home are intact and more of the story surrounding the home is revealed every day,” she said.

Just south of downtown Danville, John Fourch Warren and his brother, Samuel Wilcox Warren built their Gothic Villa, Warrenwood Manor after their father, Captain William Warren, bought the 100+ acres in 1785.

Warrenwood Manor was modeled after John McMurtry’s Gothic Revival Elley Villa on Linden Walk near UK’s campus. Lumber used in building Warrenwood came from the acreage it sits on and bricks were fired on property as well. The interior includes Venetian leaded glass windows, handcrafted bannisters and large mantels that complement its surroundings.

Brittney and Nick Adams have 800+ cattle, 11 chickens, two cats and a dog, and hosted their own wedding at the site, renovating the barn, and creating the wedding decor. One hundred and fifty guests gathered at the barn on October 11, 2014 for the wedding, followed by a reception that included beef jerky and popcorn, and then hot dogs and s’mores with friends and family. The two then went on a “Kentuckymoon” that included the Louisville Slugger museum, Cumberland Falls, stops along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a stop at a John Deere tractor store, Lake Barkley, Mammoth Cave and Chaney’s Dairy.

Warrenwood Manor was profiled in a January Huffington Post blog, “Five Lessons from an Old House,” (“be patient with the elderly; know thyself, know thy house; do your research, but don’t be a know-it-all; set a budget and then set it again; and utilize contractors selectively.”)

ess than 30 minutes from Hamburg, sits Paris and one of the oldest structures in Kentucky, Duncan Tavern. Built in 1788 by Major Joseph Duncan, a decorated major during the Revolutionary War, he created his post-colonial American home with “five windows on the second floor (facing the street) with a door in the middle on the first floor, two windows on either side” according to Duncan Tavern Historical Center’s Resident Curator, Judy Sieweke. Then Major Duncan saw the need for an inn for travelers passing through the area in 1795 and such historic figures as Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton stayed at newly christened Goddess of Liberty Inn. Today, Duncan Tavern houses the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as the John Fox Jr. Genealogical Library, an extensive

historical resource for those researching their family lineage.

own I-75 in Richmond, Cassius Marcellus Clay made his home at White Hall, which started out as a completely different style of home.

Initially, Clay’s father, General Green Clay, built Clermont in 1799, reflecting Georgian architecture, popular in the late 18th century. In the 1860s, Cassius Clay remodeled the home into the Italianate/Greek Revival home that became White Hall. Young Clay’s crusade against slavery began after witnessing a tragic incident involving a slave named Mary and the Clay family’s abusive overseer. “The Lion of White Hall” started his newspaper True American in Lexington in 1845, expounding the fiery anti-slavery message in print. Clay’s influence on Lincoln during his Civil War tenure led to the Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Today, White Hall offers tours of the home with living historians who can describe the lives of the Clays and how they changed Kentucky’s history. Lashe Mullins, curator of the site, comments that visiting historic homes and sites is important “so we don’t forget our past ... so that we can build on that informa-

eginning in the early 19th century, Lexington became known as the “Athens of the West” thanks to the rapid growth and thriving cultural center as described by Josiah Espy’s poem. Transylvania University, Kentucky’s first library and several prominent churches made downtown into a center for education and religious enlightenment.

John Wesley Hunt constructed his Federal home in 1814 as a reflection of his wealth, status and position as Kentucky’s first millionaire. Architecturally, the home possesses a Palladian arch window above the door and side windows that grace the entryway. The home also witnessed history via its residents and visitors, most notably the infamous Confederate General John Hunt Morgan who led Morgan’s Raid in 1863. Just three years later, Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan was born in the house and went on to receive Kentucky’s first Nobel Prize in physiology in 1933. (The Thomas Hunt Morgan House is on Broadway.) Jason Sloan, the Bluegrass Trust’s Director of Preservation says “In 1955, the house was saved by the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation, marking the start of Kentucky’s oldest preservation advocacy organization as well as the beginning of preservation in the Bluegrass. Today, the Hunt-Morgan House [also known as Hopemont] is a community space, house museum, and rental venue that welcomes thousands of visitors per year.”

Across Gratz Park from the Hunt-Morgan House sits the Bodley-Bullock house. “The Bodley-Bullock House is 200 years old and has a three-story winding staircase on the insid. It’s filled with museum quality furnishings and relics,” say Cary T. Davis, office manager for the Junior League which is headquartered in the house. The home also played an active role in Lexington society from 1837 to post Civil War and continues to play an active role even today as the house and the 100-year-old garden serves as an event space for weddings, meetings and events.

efore Rupp Arena and Heritage Hall dominated the landscape of Lexington’s Main Street, First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln grew up at 578 West Main Street in the two story brick Georgian that once served as an inn and tavern. Mary Todd lived there from 1832 until 1839. Mary Todd Lincoln House Director Gwen Thompson says, “One of the unique aspects of the Mary Todd Lincoln House is that we are the first historic site restored to honor a First Lady. In fact, it is rare that an historic site’s significance is because of a woman and we use her story to explore many aspects of our history, including Kentucky history, civil war history and the Lincoln Legacy. That whole package makes The Mary Todd Lincoln House unique.” Today, the house opens as a museum and gives tours during the warm months, beginning in March, with events throughout the year.

O

n the corner of Richmond and Sycamore roads, Henry Clay and his wife Lucretia Hart built their 600+ acre farm named Ashland. It was named for the ash trees that once stood on the property. After the original Federal house was built, Clay hired world renowned architect Benjamin Latrobe to design the wings of Ashland. (The B.H. Latrobe Pope Villa is on Grosvenor.) In later years, Clay’s son James rebuilt the property with his father in mind, though adding other architectural features to the home to make it more modern. Touring the property, the buildings, the artifacts, personal collections and the mansion itself evoke memories of Kentucky in its infancy and stands as a living testament to Henry Clay and his family legacy as politicians and statesmen. Ashland’s

Warrenwood Manor Curator and Site Manager, Eric Brooks comments: “In this contentious climate in which we live, Ashland is also a place where visitors can learn the importance of Compromise and Conciliation through the example of Henry Clay, a man who held his nation together through those practices.”

A

bout a mile west of downtown Georgetown stands the grand antebellum Greek Revival home known as Ward Hall. Named for its owners Junius Richard and Matilda Viley Ward, they

finished Ward Hall in 1857 as their summer home to escape the Mississippi heat. The home attributes begin with majestic Corinthian columns atop of wide stone steps.

Inside, two elliptical staircases spiral from the third floor to end on the first on either side to matching parlors evoking an image of perfect balance, a common Greek architectural element. Today, you can tour the home and attend special events. “Historic homes offer visitors a perspective on Kentucky culture— Opening the door of Ward Hall is better than opening a book on Kentucky culture. It’s the

best way to absorb what life was like back in the days of the home,” says David Stuart, chairman of the Ward Hall Preservation Foundation.

Historic homes tell the story of Kentucky, how Kentucky grew politically, socially and culturally. The history of the families and their homes reflect what Kentucky remains to this day — colorful, resilient, and forward thinking.

Clutter ‘Cheaper than Therapy’

The Life and Times of a Professional Organizer “Cheaper than therapy,” is how Sarah Michul characterizes her business model for DeClutter with Sarah.

The obvious question is, do people tell a professional organizer things they wouldn’t tell their therapist? She says, “I think clients feel a bond with me because I’ve seen their most personal possessions usually at their most vulnerable moments. A lot of my email inquiries come in the middle of the night when people are not able to sleep because they are stressing over the current state of their home. A lot of time something has set them over the edge, whether it was a divorce, a move or maybe an unexpected guest came over and saw how messy their house looked. Then when we start to go through personal belongings it brings up old feelings and memories and the stories just start pouring out of them.”

“Clients have told me everything from secret money they are hiding from their husbands, to the year-long depression they just went through to where that scar on their arm really came from.” Does confidentiality apply to professional organizers the way it does for priests and lawyers? She says, “I’m taking it all to the grave!”

M

ichul got started in the business in 2009 after graduating from UK, while she “was working at a job I didn’t love. I wanted to be able to love going to work everyday and not feel like I was ‘working.’ I started DeClutter with Sarah on the side and within about six months I quit my other job and have been doing this full time ever since. I have worked for every type of client from hoarders to busy family’s trying to spend more time together and less time stressing over the house.”

When she began, she admits she was “basically working for free just trying to let the public know that hiring an organizer was even something that could be done and now I’ve built DeClutter up enough to have clients that include pro athletes and celebrities.”

The job was in her blood. “Organizing is something I’ve always enjoyed doing. Before becoming an organizer I would de-stress by coming home and re organizing closets or kitchen cabinets. It was my therapy. They always say do what you love and that’s exactly what I’m doing, and so it never feels like work.”

She cites her mother as inspiration. “Not only is she my role model for all things organizing but her her office looks just like a Ralph Lauren ad, so sophisticated and classic. It’s not only extremely organized but beautiful as well.”

There have been a few challenges and surprises along the way. She says, “Before starting my business I thought organizing was going to be making closets and pantries picture perfect with pretty baskets and bins. My very first client ever was a hoarder and when I walked through their front door I thought to myself ‘Oh no Sarah. What have you got yourself into?!’ I seriously considered running. But the couple was so nice and so eager to change the way they were living that I decided to stay. It turned out to not be much different than any other organizing I had ever done. I used the same principles and concepts, just on a MUCH larger scale. They were so appreciative and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. I still keep in contact with that couple and think of them as good friends.”

Also from the early years, she says, “One of my first clients was a witch. That’s right a witch, spell books and all. She was downsizing and instructed me to throw away this particular box of things and when I looked at what was inside it was all of these little baggies of locks of hair with people’s names written on them! And yes, there was a Sarah bag with brown hair in it!”

Another time, she says, “I was at a client’s house and she didn’t want her husband to know she had hired an organizer so we kept it a secret and I came while he was at work.

One day he called and said he was running

home to grab something he forgot and we both panicked. We quickly made up a full detailed back story of ‘who I was’ in case he asked. I was scared to death. Lucky for me what he needed was outside so I never had to meet him and pretend to be someone else.”

A

relative newlywed herself, Sarah married Jake last August (and even managed to work in a plug for her business in the wedding announcement). Is he as organized as she is? She says, “Jake does what I refer to as his Trail of Tears. It’s basically the trail of clothes he leaves from the front door to the bedroom everyday that makes me want to cry! Everyday when he comes home from work it starts with shoes and briefcase by the door, then his coat gets laid over a chair in the den, then his tie gets draped over a dining room chair then wallet and keys go onto the kitchen counter then shirt gets put over a chair in the bedroom and leaves his belt on the bed.”

What’s it like when a Professional Organizer plans a wedding? She laughs, “If anyone ever tells you they weren’t a crazy person while planning their wedding they are lying to you and I’m no exception. I hired a professional wedding planner who was absolutely amazing and I couldn’t have done any of it without her, but still did the majority of the planning myself. I put together a wedding binder that in the end was 11 inches thick! I had this thing down to a science and could retrieve anything from any vendor in seconds!

Being organized was literally the only thing that kept me sane during the entire process.”

“The hardest part for me was trying to relax and enjoy the process. I’m very Type A and a perfectionist so staying stress free was challenging.”

She admits that what we would find on her desk right now (if we launched a sneak attack) would be “the last few thank you notes I need to write from my wedding. I HATE clutter so I made a promise to myself that I have to

be annoyed by looking at them everyday until I sit down and finish.”

W

hen it comes to clients, are men and women different in how they tackle chaos in the home

or office?

She says, “When a woman is ready to DeClutter she usually also wants make things look pretty and it involves a little decorating in the process. When a man is ready to DeClutter he comes armed with trash bags,” she says.

“When it come to having clutter women are no more or less likely to have clutter than men. But when it comes to getting rid of it women are typically much more emotional and sentimental about objects than men.

Parting with things like baby gear, clothes, etc can be traumatic. Men are usually puzzled by this and unsympathetic.”

And as for Hoarders, the TV show? She says, “I watch it, and live it. My first clients I ever had were hoarders, and sadly it’s just what you see on TV. However it doesn’t move that fast. The show gets it done in a weekend while in real life, a home of that magnitude could take weeks or months. But the hoarding clients I’ve helped have been the most rewarding and in the end it makes taking their case on worth it.” She adds, “My husband can’t stand to watch it.”

So what about the rest of us… the non-hoarders who still might be harboring a guilty secret or two. What is her professional position on junk drawers, for example.

“I think everyone is entitled to one junk drawer, but not two and definitely not six. And this doesn’t mean a drawer filled with who knows what that’s just been thrown in.”

Her advice: “Drawer dividers are a small investment that make a huge difference! It takes less time to put a pencil in the pencil divider than it does to dig through a mess looking for a pencil.”

That’s a simple place where we can all start today.

Spring Cleaning Tips with Sarah It’s easy to get stuck when trying to de-clutter and organize.

Sarah mentions three areas: The main place is with paper. Not only is it scary to throw something you think is important away, but it’s also a very boring tedious process and most people just give up.

The second would be getting rid of things you inherited from a deceased relative. There is so much guilt and sentimentality that is associated.

When someone who has lost or gain weight and they are keeping multiple sizes in their closet. I tell clients if you lost weight that’s great and you should celebrate that! Don’t let yourself ever need those fat pants again! Gaining weight isn’t always so great, but I just remind them they have to only keep the things that are for your current lifestyle not the lifestyle you wish you hadn’t.

Does she recommend Spring Cleaning?

Her answer is: “For organizing to be easy it has to be kept up constantly, but once a year is better than never!”

“Spring means tax time, and that’s when I tell clients to go through all of their paperwork and get rid of everything that’s not needed for taxes or anything else vital. It’s a simple thing that really needs to be done every year. It’s amazing how much they probably kept and can easily throw out.”

Start small and manageable “If you’re not someone who usually organizes or enjoys it can be very easy to be overwhelmed by something like a master closet. Start off slow and tackle the hall closet instead.”

Start a ‘Donation Station’ “Have a donation station that you keep all year long for the things you no longer need. Get a Christmas present you don’t like and can’t return? Put it in the donation bin. Realize those shoes you love give you a blister every time you wear them, so you don’t actually wear them? Put them in the donation station.”

Ask yourself three questions: Do you need it?

Do you love it?

Would the world end if you no longer had it?

A new challenge for Iron Man athlete

by Mark Rucker “Hmmmmm….I wonder why my wrist hurts?” I thought.

I

remember it just like it was yesterday.

I woke up one morning last August and noticed that I had some pain in my wrist on my left hand. It was just a small area, on the back on my hand on the inside portion closest to my thumb. I thought about what I might have done the day before to make it hurt but dismissed it as a “mystery” pain and went on about my daily business.

The next day I noticed that the pain had moved to the middle of my wrist on the back of my hand. Again, I wondered about the cause but again simply dismissed it as one of the joys of being 46 years old. Then the next morning the pain had moved to the outside of my wrist on the pinky side of my hand. I was perplexed by what could have caused it but again didn’t give it a whole lot of thought. Over the next few days the pain spread to the underside of my wrist and slowly began working its way up my palm and into my fingers. Admittedly, I was a little concerned but like most men I know, I milked it for some sympathy from my wife, and decided that it wasn’t worthy of a doctor’s visit.

And then on Thursday, August 22, I woke up with pain in my right wrist. This pain started on the underside of my hand which was different from how it started in my left hand. Later that day, I met my wife for lunch in Frankfort and the pain had spread into the palm of my right hand. After lunch, I drove back to work in Georgetown. After work I had to drive to Shelbyville for a soccer match for my daughter and by then the pain had moved into my fingers. I stopped to get gas in my car and struggled to remove my gas cap and squeeze the handle on the pump. I knew something was definitely not right.

At the game I couldn’t even clap my hands to cheer and on the drive home, I struggled to wrap my fingers around the steering wheel. By the time I got home I was exhausted and decided to go to bed.

Unfortunately the pain in both hands was so intense that I wasn’t able to sleep. I got up, went downstairs, and decided to watch some TV to take my mind off of it. But the pain intensified and I noticed that I had several red areas on my hands and wrists that were hot to the touch. I also had some swelling. I convinced myself that I had contracted some rare blood disease and that my hands were now going to have to be amputated. I decided to wake my wife and head to the ER. At the ER, the Doctor looked at my hands and asked me quite a few questions. My wife volunteered the fact that I am a social media addict and that in her opinion I had carpal tunnel. I admit that I

do spend a lot of time on my phone using social media. And I use the computer nonstop at work as well and work had been very busy for some time leading up to this event. After a few minutes, the Doctor told me that he thought it was carpal tunnel and possibly a touch of RA. “RA?”, I thought. “ME?” I think I even laughed out loud at the suggestion. I was only 46 years old. RA is something that only old people get. And I was not old. And I had no family history, so I thought there was no way that I had RA. He prescribed some pain meds for me so I could get some sleep, as well as some prescription Tylenol. He also gave me wrist guards to wear to help keep my wrists steady. I was a little embarrassed to wear them to be honest, but I decided that it would be best to follow the Doctor’s (and my wife’s) orders.

For the next couple of weeks things seemed to be going okay with my hands.

I took a break from social media, wore my stylish wrist guards, and took my meds.

But then I noticed that I was starting to have some pain in the balls of my feet and in my toes. I had just volunteered at Ironman Louisville though and had spent about 14 hours on my feet so I chalked the pain up to that. But over time it wasn’t getting any better. In fact, it was getting worse.

In October my wife and I went to Cape San Blas, Florida with some friends for a much needed vacation. The pain meds that I was prescribed in the ER were long gone and the pain had returned to my wrists, hands and fingers, and was still in my feet and toes. It had also spread into my shoulders over the weeks after my ER visit. What should have been a very relaxing, enjoyable time at the beach turned into something of a nightmare. Doing simple tasks was extremely difficult. It was difficult to get dressed in the morning because of the pain in my hands. Walking up and down the stairs at the rental house was a tedious task because of the pain in my feet. Walking in the sand on the beach, which is one of my favorite things to do, only caused more pain. Sleeping was hit or miss at best. Fatigue was overtaking my body. And then, while still on vacation, I woke up one morning and could barely move my jaw. So now eating was even difficult. And being on vacation and not being able to eat very well was not much fun. I decided then that it was time to go to my Doctor.

When I returned from vacation I made an appointment immediately. I talked with her about my symptoms, how it all started, and how it had spread. I honestly was convinced that I had gout at this point. She examined my hands and feet and decided to do some lab work. A few days later I got a call that told me that everything looked good: there was no gout, blood sugar was Continued to page 22

HEALTH 22 Continued from page 21 fine, thyroid was fine, liver function was good, triglycerides and cholesterol were good. But there was one small potential issue. The indicator for RA came back positive. She told me that the test isn’t a definitive indicator for RA but rather of inflammation in the body. She told me that she needed to refer me to a Rheumatologist for further testing.

I was scheduled for the Rheumatologist for January 19. That was two months away. I really wasn’t sure how I was going to make it that long. Over November and December, the joint pain moved into my ankle, knees and hips and also into my neck. I was unable to sleep lying down anymore. Every night I would retire to my recliner because sleeping in an upright position was the only way that I could get enough relief to sleep for 2-3 hours at a time.

I know you’re probably asking “Why didn’t you ask your Doctor for pain meds?”

Well that is a valid question. And I wanted to ask her. But I didn’t want to be that person who seeks out pain meds. To be honest, I hate taking medicine. And I hate going to the Doctor. So much so that in 2001 I actually broke my arm while rollerblading with my kids but didn’t go to the Doctor for two weeks. It’s just not something that I do.

And so I decided to wait until I could see the Rheumatologist.

On January 19, I went to the Rheumatologist with my wife. She is such a trooper.

And I was so thankful to have her by my side. I was nervous. And scared. I wanted an answer but was truly afraid of what the answer might be.

The Doctor was very nice and asked me a lot of questions about my symptoms and how everything had developed. He inspected my hands and feet and also ordered some very extensive bloodwork and X-Rays. As we spoke, he told me a little about RA and the different meds that they use to treat it. At this point I was thinking that he was wasting his breath because I didn’t have RA. But the more we talked, the more certain he seemed to be that it was RA. So I had the X-Rays done and then gave what seemed like a gallon of blood and that was that. I left still thinking that he was wrong and that there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for everything that was going on with me. I knew that I didn’t have RA. And then I got the call.

“Mr. Rucker, this is the Doctor’s office calling you back with your test results. The good news is that the X-Rays show that there is no permanent damage to your joints.”

“Great,” I thought.

And then she continued, ‘but the bad news is that the tests did come back positive for RA.” Honestly, I was stunned. Completely shell-shocked. I was only 46. I’d just spent over three years losing over 100 pounds. I was in the best shape of my adult life.

“I’m a freaking Ironman,” I thought to myself. How could this be happening to me?

I called my wife and shared the news with her. I think that we both already knew but we both had hoped for a different

www.hamburgjournal.com answer. I asked her to pick up my new meds for me on her way home. I was still struggling with the fact that I was going to be facing a lifetime of meds to fight this disease and I couldn’t bring myself to go to the pharmacy. It was almost as if by refusing to pick up my meds, I was refusing to accept the disease.

If only it were that easy.

So now I just started my fifth week of medication. I take a daily dose of Prednisone and I take a weekly dose of Methotrexate once a week. I had taken Prednisone before so I was aware of some of the potential issues with it but I didn’t know much about the Methotrexate.

Unfortunately I decided to Google it. After reading just two or three posts about it from other people with RA I realized that it was best to not read any more. I mean, after all, my options were to (1) take the meds and deal with the effects, or (2) not take the meds and deal with the pain. I chose option 1.

As part of my plan of attack on this disease, I also decided to change my nutrition completely. This wasn’t something that my Doctor recommended but rather a decision that my wife and I made in an effort to cut out anything that might have an inflammatory effect on my system. I have cut dairy out of my diet completely. Now, I’m a big fan of lattes which of course contain milk so this has been very difficult. Fortunately, my wife convinced me to try Almond milk and I’m slowly adjusting to it. I make them at home now and use the Almond milk instead of dairy. I’ve also cut out alcohol. I love lattes but I love drinking a good beer even more. Unfortunately there is no substitute for that so it’s just something that I’m learning to deal with. I’ve also removed grains from my diet, at least for now. I know that gluten can cause inflammation for some people so I’m just testing it to see how my body responds. And I’ve also cut out all processed sugars. My diet now consists mostly of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, like chicken and fish, and nuts and seeds. But again, I have to say that my wife has been amazing through all of this. She’s searched for new recipes and has learned to make new, healthy foods that fit all of my new restrictions. And if there is a silver lining to all of this, it is that I’ve been losing additional weight which I know will make it easier on my joints. And I know that by eating healthier, I am making my body healthier.

So what does my future look like? Well I’m not sure. I know that for now I’ll be taking meds for some time and hoping that I can eventually get off the daily Prednisone. I hope that maybe someday that I’ll be able to get off all of my meds. I hope to get back into training soon. Because of the pain in multiple joints I’ve not been able to do much in terms of working out.

But the meds do seem to be working and the joint pain has subsided tremendously.

That gives me hope that soon I’ll be able to get back to swimming, cycling, and even running. I hope to be able to compete in either Ironman Louisville or Ironman Florida later this year. That will depend on how my body responds to the meds and also to the intense training. But I believe that having a goal is essential to overcoming any obstacle in life.

the love and support of my wife, my family, and my friends, and with my faith, I CAN and WILL beat this disease.
