Originally from Pennsylvania, Emily received her B.F.A and B.S. from Kutztown University. During her time at Kutztown University, she was selected as a student exhibitor in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Craft Show. She moved to Maine in 2014 for a 1 year internship with studio jeweler, Cara Romano, whom she met at the PMA Craft Show. Since then she has made a home in Maine to begin her career creating contemporary jewelry. Each piece of Emily Shaffer Studio jewelry features a clean, matte finish with oxidized components for visual depth. Emily uses sterling and argentium silver to craft pieces that strike a balance between line and negative space. A limited color palette allows for a greater emphasis on the body and the linear qualities of her work. Collections of Emily’s work can be seen in craft galleries and shops around the country. She has participated in several juried fine craft shows including shows promoted by: The American Craft Council, Paradise City, Artrider, The Maine Crafts Association, The Society of Arts & Crafts, Artsworth, The Maine Crafts Guild and The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. Emily is the recipient of the J. Allen Pawling Craft Memorial Award, an American Craft Week 30 Under 30 Rising Star, and a 2017 Halstead Grant Top 5 Finalist. See pg 11 for an interview with Emily. EMILY SHAFFER STUDIO

My focus is to create jewelry that is clean, modern and versatile. It’s made to be functional and to complement the body. Using silver, I seek compositions of line and negative space. Limiting my color palette allows for a greater emphasis on the body and the linear quality of my work. My interest in contemporary jewelry and adornment fuels my will to create work that is both finely crafted, and designed for the modern day jewelry wearer. Q&A WITH EMILY SHAFFER

How does your location influence your work and business? Living in coastal Maine greatly influences my work and business. Ellsworth, and the surrounding areas, are a short drive from Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. This naturally draws a large summer population, allowing me access to a select group of buyers right from home. I’ve organized my business into quarters that reflect this unique seasonal economy.

What was the most difficult grant application question for you? The most difficult question for me was, “Who are your target buyers? What image do you want to project for your brand name?” Without much thought, I could generate a very general answer. However, to run a successful business, you must identify your targeted audience. Upon further thought and research I realized this answer was based on location, for me. Once I identified this core group of people I was able to make a plan, and this actually helped me answer the remaining questions on the grant. Since answering this grant question I’ve made business decisions that are rooted in this very question.

11

What did you learn about yourself while preparing for the grant? I gained a sense of pride while preparing for this grant. I was able to stretch my writing muscles, make a business plan, identify my brand and basically see everything that I’ve accomplished thus far in my career in one package. I have to admit, it was pretty cool. Although I was proud of these things, I also learned that it’s not time to sit back...it’s time to get to work and I’M READY!

What mentors, artists and teachers have inspired you? I recall attending the Philadelphia Museum of Craft Show while exhibiting in the Kutztown University booth. Walking around that show, I remember seeing the exhibiting artists, and thinking, “Wow, these are all real people who are making a living and selling their craft”. It was a very special moment for me. Seeing craft artists at shows, specifically women, many of which, run every aspect of their businesses on their own, is hugely inspiring for me. I really look up to many of these women. They set such great examples as talented artists and designers, business women, and all around supportive, kind people.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as you start your business? Financing my new business has been my biggest challenge. I started my business while working several part time jobs in 2015. These part time jobs payed for personal expenses, yet they also funded my new jewelry business. As I attended more shows, gained retail accounts and developed a clientele I’m happy to say my business now can support itself. The jump to being a full time studio jeweler will be a challenge, but I feel that I’m close!

12

How will the grant help you succeed? The grant application itself helped me step outside of the day to day tasks that come with running a jewelry business. It allowed me to essentially write a business plan that maps out the next three years. This has been so valuable! The grant money is helping to finance my business and will allow me the opportunity to get in front of overhead costs and fees. The PR that comes with the grant will get my brand in front of many potential clients and retailers.

I enjoy working with bold lines, angular organics, and fabricating dimensional geometrics to create modern elegance. I am passionate about jewelry that speaks to the soul of a person. Every single piece is handmade from my heart to yours. Whether it’s a piece from my collection or bespoke work, I love challenging myself creatively. When I’m not making jewelry, you can find me snuggling a cat, grabbing a craft brew, or spending time with my family and friends. Moss Agate Visionary Necklace Sterling silver & moss agate

The signature elements of my collection are design motifs such as leaves, fan shapes, and natural forms. I find inspiration in Chinese folding screens, paintings, and hanging scrolls. In my practice of ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, I have developed a respect and appreciation for Asian aesthetics. In my work, this translates to using the contrast of line and shape, raised form elements and recessed engraved detail, the play of light, and the use of empty space as important components in my work. My designs focus on asymmetry, oddnumber combinations of visual elements, and subtle details. Each design also has a story, an accompanying poem or piece of text to encourage deeper thought. I view my designs as fine art and not simply fashion accessories. The flow of one earring design to the next is important, like a story across space, where we become a part of that conversation. Organic sophistication is on display in my dramatic and stunning jewelry that catches the eye and draws attention to the wearers refined sense of style. I believe in the raw elegance of quality craftsmanship. That’s why each piece of jewelry I create is meticulously handcrafted. I have always been fascinated with anatomy because every line, every form, every recess has a strong refined purpose; which is the sustaining of life within an organism. The essence of my artistic voice is the highlighting of the explosive undulating lines and corresponding negative shapes within life forms across our world through excessively hand-pierced sterling silver. By creating jewelry that exposes the nuanced beauty of the various anatomy that lies with all living organisms I am making a statement on the connection within all life that we take for granted or sometimes refuse to see at all. I am engaged by the transformation that occurs when I allow the materials to direct the process and influence the outcome. Every piece I create is a “sibling of the previous, creating a cohesive line through the resulting enlightenment within every process. As a contemporary jeweler I am interested in exploring non-traditional materials in jewelry as a means to create ambiguous metaphors for social standard and ideals. By creating minimal and edgy jewelry with clean lines and a pinch of humor and playfulness, I encourage individuality through style and empower women. My collections seek to represent the duality of nature; in both the softness of botanicals, offset by the hardness of crystals and gemstones. I draw inspirations from all types of sources, including the duality of nature, geometry, traditional metalsmithing techniques, and Pagan, Runic, Wiccan and Alchemy symbols. By mixing these inspirations with the soft, dainty elegance that goes hand in hand with high end luxury jewelry, I put a modern spin on both worlds. My work brings an alternative look to traditional elegance. I use non-traditional stones, such as tourmalines and sunstones, with unique cuts and even more unique settings. I make my heirloom quality jewelry by hand using traditional metalsmithing techniques including planishing, traditional hand fabrication, and hand-setting stones in bezels, prongs and flush settings. Artistic luxury creations for the modern human. Mis-Match Lilliana Earrings 14kt gold & tourmaline Lilliana Ring 14kt gold & brown diamond

I believe there is beauty in simplicity. Basic, simple shapes that we look at day in and day out can take on new form and new meaning, simply by shifting perspective. With each piece I create, I am attempting to remind my wearer of this. I find nature boundlessly inspiring in so many ways. Watching light and shadows change as we move through the year, to the way the sunlight dances off of water, is fascinating to me. Creating pieces that interact with nature, never steering too far from my love of minimalism, is at the core of Lou Jewels. This translates to highly reflective surfaces, subtle textures, and unexpected elements. Last but certainly not least, I am drawn to the universal language of mathematics. Geometric lines and shapes become art when viewed through the proper lens. Each piece of Lou Jewels jewelry is crafted by hand, through the process of fabrication. As a result, each piece is injected with the love and gratitude I feel while making it. The process of creating each piece, starting with inspiration, to the final design, to construction, to finishing is such a joyous process for me as an artist. I hope that that joy resonates with the wearers of my jewelry. Orbital Ring Sterling silver & assorted gemstones Sundial Earrings Sterling silver

The way One comes to appreciate the infusion of Spirit is to merge fully into the profundity of the moment, hence the creation of my art. My work represents my dance with the unconscious mind. From the time we are born, we have been taught how to think and act, to follow a mold society deems appropriate and to take the safe route. To be an Artist is freedom. My work has lead me to this experiential state of being by transcending conditioned beliefs, to break free from the self-imposed bondage of the Mind which holds one back from life. To get to this place of independence, I realized the profundity of self-acceptance and the importance of doing the internal work to evolve. Art is an extension of my continued growth and through jewelry I hope to inspire an awareness of compassion for oneself and to those around. When one embarks on a journey of service from a true place of love, it causes an alchemical chain reaction of inspiration among those who are open to receive it. Imagine a world where we could all thrive from this place of harmony. Therefore, we celebrate individuality. The message is love. To love yourself and others. 39

Susan Elnora is drawn to imagery that reflects a connection to spirit, awareness, curiosity, and playfulness. Her work explores the idea that, beyond the role of adornment, jewelry can act as a visual and tactile manifestation of memories, dreams, stories, and intentions. She believes that jewelry can become a powerful symbol of personal mythos, as well as a reminder to cultivate presence and openness. Moth & Lantern Necklace Sterling silver & 24kt gold

40

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

All pieces are handmade by Susan from sterling silver and gold. Most shapes are sawed out, then refined with tiny files, and the pieces are folded, forged, and soldered together. She often textures and oxidizes her work to bring out its delicate details and sculptural dimensionality. A supporter of conscious sustainability, Susan uses recycled metals and responsibly sourced gems. Susan Elnora was introduced to metalsmithing at Carleton College in Minnesota. She attended Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, and worked as a goldsmith in Minneapolis. She has lived in New Mexico, a place that continues to inform and influence her work. Drawing inspiration from the unexpected beauty and sense of impending loss that can be encountered in the collision of the industrial and natural worlds, she often explores images of a fading American mythology. Susan’s work, which can stir unique individual associations, also tends to point to our essential connectedness and a certain shared experience of the world. When I started my business in 2010 I was working nights and weekends while I paid the bills as a floral designer. At the beginning I spent all my time making work because it didn’t matter if I got paid. Now, a few years into being a full time jeweler, my biggest realization is that I am an entrepreneur as much as an artist, and my time is split between all the different aspects of running a business. I don’t always get to spend all day on creative endeavors, but the tasks that allow my business to be successful are satisfying and empowering in a different way. As the boss I am able to decide how I spend my time, so even though there are a thousand moving parts and responsibilities, it still feels like freedom. Highway Torque Necklace Sterling silver & copper

44

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Highways, railroads, and power lines link us in a common web across the developed world, and while these structures require the most sophisticated engineering to accomplish they are so familiar as to be largely ignored. I turn this imagery into adornment, using the language of jewelry to load value into these basic necessities for modern urban life. Building Block Bracelets Sterling silver & 18kt yellow gold

45

I am interested in the subtle changes of architectural details between cities and the visual cues that inform an outsider of a place’s personality. Having lived in numerous cities, I use my observations to catalogue these similarities and differences and then reflect them in my work. The subtlety allows the wearer of my pieces to make a connection to their specific place in the world by dressing in a representation of its landscape. Using soldering, fusing and hand forming, I primarily work with oxidized sterling silver and fine copper mesh. Highway Intersection Brooch Sterling silver & copper

After 15 wacky, wonderful and long years into running my jewelry business I realize that my creative peers, those friends who are living this same life, the ones I can sit down and talk real, unfiltered, sometimes ugly business with are a big part of the foundation of my success. Talking shop (technical, marketing, financials or any of the other 17 hats we wear) with other metalsmiths has lead to some of my greatest revelations. Oval Geode Necklace Sterling silver, ruby, labradorite, & white sapphire

48

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

My work is both organic and architectural, and is created from the visual fragments of a life of collecting images. I inspect facets of the world in great detail and have always collected shells, seed pods, stones and interesting organic elements. My studio often resembles a laboratory with trays of specimens lined in rows. The walls and pages of my sketchbook are covered with myriad images of our world from nano-photography of plant life to geometric illustrations of platonic solids. In designing, making and living I see a strong relevance for the smallest things within the larger context; the seed that becomes a plant, the crystal that forms a valued mineral, our planet within the universe. Understanding the foundations or building blocks of “things is the driving force behind my inspirations. Of late I am focusing my research and design on the material at hand, metal and mineral, and have begun to explore the molecular and crystal structure of the beautiful materials I create with. Using a variety of metalsmithing techniques intended to explore the malleability of silver I am building my visual interpretations of our foundations.
