The Origins of English Surnames Joslin Fiennes

Surnames carry the history of people in a very personal way. In England surnames were mostly established by the end of the fourteenth century, and describe ordinary medieval lives not captured by any other record: they tell us what these people did, where they went, what they noticed and give clues to their culture and memories. Where genealogists and etymologists focus on single names, this book takes groups of names and explores what these say about the society that created them. It looks at the origins of occupational names, locational names, nicknames and personal names, names from the Continent and symbolic names. The Origins of English Surnames portrays the English people at a key moment in history, revealing the way they spoke, the jokes they made, and their memories of ancient cultures – all at a time when land-based feudalism was crumbling and people sought better lives.

Smithfield Past, Present and Future Alec Forshaw

Famed for its meat market, the Smithfield area of London has a long and turbulent history. Originally a ‘smooth field’ lying just beyond the City wall, over the years Smithfield has seen riots, public executions and healing. From medieval times it became a centre of industry where tanners, slaughterers, glue-makers and dyers assembled. Largely untouched by either the Great Fire of 1666 or the 1940s Blitz, its streets preserve some of London’s most ancient institutions. Smithfield: Past and Present traces the development of the area from Roman times to the present, and features over 100 photographs and illustrations. The book records the growth of the notorious cattle market, the history of the palace of the Bishops of Ely, medieval tournaments, crime and punishment, and the bawdy life of Cock Lane. Written by an architect and former town planner, this third edition looks at the people, history and buildings in this vibrant part of London, and considers the inevitable impact of Crossrail

Vaughan Williams Composer, Radical, Patriot – a Biography Keith Alldritt

This ground-breaking biography of Ralph Vaughan Williams reveals more than any other the man behind the music. The author examines the considerable range of Vaughan Williams’s work, from the English pastoral tradition to Modernism, and shows how Vaughan Williams was influenced by the Boer War, the economic depression after the First World War, the deprivations of the Blitz, and the austerity of the Cold War. He also reveals how the greatest influence on Vaughan Williams’s music and creative development was his personal life, involving his seemingly secure marriage and an equally enduring love affair. The author shows how these reflected both the stability and cutting-edge aspects of his music. Like a great symphony, this book ranges from doubt to inspiration. It is the most complete biography of one of Britain’s greatest composers.

Gallipoli

A Return to the World after 28 Years in a Convent

A Soldier’s Story

Monica Baldwin

Arthur Beecroft Foreword by Andrew Roberts

At the age of twenty-one, Monica Baldwin – the niece of Stanley Baldwin – entered one of the oldest and most strictly enclosed contemplative orders of the Roman Catholic Church. Years later she obtained a special rescript from Rome and left the convent. But the world Monica had known in 1914 was very different to the world into which she emerged at the height of the Second World War. Written in the post-war years, this remarkable classic is a fascinating account of one woman’s two very different lives.

Published for the first time in the centenary year of the Gallipoli campaign, this is a rare insight into the experiences of an ordinary ‘civilian soldier’ swept up in the fog of war. Arthur Beecroft’s detailed memoir takes us from the days of the declaration of war to the bungled landing at Suvla Bay, and the difficult conditions of the Gallipoli terrain. He brings to life the men dogged by disease and exhaustion – soldiers who, even as they suffered the betrayal of incompetent leadership, displayed extraordinary reserves of bravery.

The Music Room Laura Kalpakian Young Marcella McNeill’s family are always rehearsing: her father is an actor, her mother Valerie an aspiring opera singer, her grandmother Gloria a renowned violinist. During the summer of 1969 – after their parents’ bitter divorce – Marcella and her little sister RoseRenee are sent to live with their enigmatic grandmother in her decaying countryside mansion. Instructed never to disturb the formidable woman as she endlessly rehearses in the music room, the children are left to run wild. They form a relationship with their neighbour Dorothea, who recognizes and nurtures the children’s gifts in ways they have never before experienced. That autumn, their wayward aunt Linda returns home. The struggles between mother and daughter – Gloria angry that Linda has abused and denied her gifts, Linda attacking her mother’s musical delusions – create a storm of clashing egos. The Music Room is a novel of arrogance and artistry, of sacrifice and negligence, of delusion and conviction, of interminable rehearsal and profound performance. It is a story of love muddied with need, expedience, and opportunism – as love always is.

An Unholy Whiff of Death

The Work of a Narrow Mind

Joyce Cato

Faith Martin

When asked to judge the neighbouring village’s Flower Show, vicar’s wife Monica Noble is thrilled, even if she can’t tell a begonia from an azalea! This year, competition is fierce, and when her fellow judge, a wellliked vicar, is killed, Monica must wake up and smell the roses. A second murder quickly follows, this time a local scientist. Monica must help the local detective to solve the two murders and find the killer – quickly, before anyone else dies.

When ex-DI Hillary Greene, now working for the cold-case squad, is assigned to the tragic murder of an old woman, she’s determined to track down the killer. But with her partner pressing for an answer to his proposal of marriage, and a new boss, it won’t be easy, especially as her team’s newest addition seems to have his own agenda for being there – an agenda that’s leading him into big trouble. Luckily Hillary’s a multi-tasker – nobody is going to get away with murder on her watch.

The Murder List

Living Dangerously

Roger Silverwood

Dan Latus

The women of Bromersley live in fear that their names are on the murder list. Bodies keep showing up – women in their sixties, always in the same disturbing pose, with a cauliflower in their laps and rice in their mouths. Inspector Angel discovers a list of the dead women’s names, but clues and forensics lead nowhere and although witnesses report an odd-looking woman wearing a sheepskin coat, no one can find her. Then, in the middle of the night, Angel receives a phone call…

When old friends Anne and Josh Steele ask Frank Doy to look after their son, Tom, Frank can’t say no. After a drink-driving incident that took the life of his friend, the victim’s gangster father wants Tom dead. Frank takes Tom to an isolated cottage in Northumberland, but trouble follows. As they are held siege during a blizzard, Frank fights to keep his charge alive. In the process he unravels a story at odds with the Steele’s version of events – of a business partnership turned sour, and a young man placed in jeopardy by family loyalty.

She’s at breaking point when suddenly contact stops. Returning home, she befriends quiet librarian Curtis, but realises too late that her trust is misplaced. At Curtis’ mercy, she’s reminded of the poem ‘The Spider and the Fly’. She has walked up the winding stair, but will she walk free, or will she perish like the fly?

Constable on Trial

Sandman

Nicholas Rhea

David Hodges

Whilst serving as an aide to the Criminal Investigations Department, Detective Constable Rhea is kept busy in the seaside resort of Strensford as he endeavours to trace a stolen garden spade, the thief of a makeshift hearse with a corpse on board, and the phantom knicker-pincher of Harbour Rise. Throughout his early days, Nick, like many other detectives, nurses an ambition to arrest a murderer, but no opportunities come his way – until a killer on the run seeks refuge in Strensford and an elderly lady is found dead at home.

Fiesty police detective Kate Lewis takes on a gruelling and risky investigation. When the body of a missing journalist is found floating in the River Parrett after covering a news story on the catastrophic Somerset Levels flooding, the police at first assume they are dealing with an accidental drowning. But as Kate delves into the incident, it becomes apparent that there was nothing at all accidental about what happened, and she finds herself drawn ever deeper into a nightmare world of murder, treachery and perversion.
