The celebrated American lion tamer during one of his daring performances in London, after the original painting of 1839 in The Royal Collection. Queen Victoria, who commissioned this portrait, took special interest in van Amburgh and his cats and saw his show several times, on one occasion remaining afterwards to watch him feed them.
