Flying BOX

DESIGN CONCEPT Slotting small boxes into big boxes is a simple exercise with thought-provoking surprises. Pulling and pushing the corner straight edges of the boxes should add interest into otherwise rigid forms. This exercise created a built form with a notion of flight as the altered box pieces pulled and pushed each other. The design brief was to create lively work spaces that are well lit and are naturally ventilated to lower the energy bill of the built as much as possible. To promote this agenda, double room loading that imposes cross corridors were minimised and the rooms were oriented to benefit from the north-south orientation - optimum cross ventilation and light penetration throughout the indoor spaces. Staircase looping, a simple circulation configuration that easily connected spaces into a rhythm of work, meet and interact for the workers.

Design the house like you would compose a song about eagles on the five strings of an Adungu.

TheEagles HUT Design Brief When Tony Manas of Star-eagles Gospel Musical Band needed an artists’ mini contemporary hut, WallZStudio was given a small site 60sq.m curved out of the artists’ residential plot, located four blocks from Gudele II Kubir Abuba market, to work with. The client was looking for a standout building that is light, airy and unique. The built should embody art and provide clues into the eagle’s majestic and visionary attributes. The built should be adaptable and habitable all day. He emphasized the need to invite his fellow colleagues for song writing and music related activities. The proposed design draws on the eagle and an Adungu for a motif - vision, wings, and a musical instrument strings. It is important to note that Tony first played the Adungu (a local musical instrument of five strings) as a boy, therefore, weaving the Adungu strings with the eagle’s tail would give the design compositions its blend of the future and memoirs of a golden past. A title, intro, verse, chorus-motif, bridge and outro the anatomy of a song really. The built space scores transcending the musical scale for maximum effect. “Design the house like you would compose a song about eagles on the five strings of an Adungu.”

South Elevation

To fully bring this bird and Adungu into a site whose longitudinal side faces the east - west orientation, it was thought that the eagle has to protect the built interiors on the east - west facades from the scorching heat of the Juba sun. The eagle should fly from the strings of the musical instrument; with the roof soaking in the functions of the eagle’s wings, folding into an armour allowing sliding windows underneath to let in light and promote aeration (a much needed cross cross-ventilation to allow the built live up to the light and airy status dreamed of). It would be possible to install awnings on the walls facing the east/west elevations to installed windows but why not think of the wings of the eagle maximising their potential in shielding and breathing air into the interiors. The curving wings reinterprets a vertical wall into ingenious work station for 2-3 artists working on lyrics a complete shift from a traditional office space arrangement that should have required an entire extra room. The design is a narrative of how basic forms carefully thought through are the rare alphabets for skill and persuasiveness in bold architecture. Together with the client we are going to pin a bold design claim in a city crowded with ordinary concrete blocks and sadolin paints stretching several blocks in all directions from the site.

The design ideas were derived from two key features on the site and its context; the current old buildings orientation and the mango trees inside the hotel premises. It is appropriate to let the new built sit harmoniously into the street to continue the overall harmony. The reason why the existing built does not align to the street lines is because the street leading to the market was built after the building. Therefore, street harmony is a goal that we hope to achieve in this project. It is important to note that, it was a new design perspective for our clients who we had to educate about the overall need to resolve questions beyond the site.

Pg. 12

In New Tokyo Hotel Yei, from the entrance, what is clearly striking is how trees and buildings have a unique relationship; a unique landscape. Huts are built under the trees borrowing the concept of tree houses but the difference with New Tokyo’s is that theirs are on the ground with tree trunks piercing through the hut roofs. We thought, that harmony is exemplary of how man should accept to live with his natural habitat in a symbiotic manner. To remind the hotel guests of New Tokyo’s tree and house relationship, we thought, the tree should influence the looks of the hotel built skin in a way.

Harmony is not necessarily about form similarity or building style similitude; yet it could be fulfilled when the imaginary street building’s starting line is respected by all in a sinuous way Page 13

Understanding the connections should lead us to a place that renders uniqueness bare for all to see and embrace

Every intervention should harness the overall agenda in a way that seems fair, connecting and reconnecting as it seeks to open up new possibilities

A detail to bring about a strong sense of synergy between the built and the trees

Responding to the site’s corner-angular form and using that to draw in guests and shoppers. subtracting and adding volumes along the frontage to create interesting spaces unique to the straight-lined built forms along the street.

The built was reserved to a single storey height to aid it blend into street building height scale wise.

The plain wall façade language rarely used in the built is a reinterpretation of the rectangular street walls typology of sloping lean on shading roofs. This occasional striking deviation helps reveal the purpose of the built. Pg. 14

The dipped built entrance invites guests and shoppers from the street pedestrian walk. The frontage shading was designed to borrow the language of the shops along the street and that of the trees, letting in light from the spaces uncovered by their leaves. A pergola was used to bring about the trees effect.

Pg. 16

The windows penetrate the built walls in a representative demonstration of how the mango tree trunks stab through the roof of the huts

Pg. 17

Timber was used to exemplify a reciprocal relationship between the built and its landscape. The palm trees and boxed shrubs helps deviate the built face from a line of shopping buildings.

This idea is an expression of a state of spirituality like that of Moses in the bible. My client has a past that connects him with God

CONNECTION

The three ideas are quick responses to the clients’ need to break free from the routines of life. The character of the lines shows connection.

WHEN LIFE IS PUZZLED IT NEEDS SPIRITUAL HEALING MY CLIENT NEED TO RETREAT

This final sketch is the absolute expression of the needs of the client. This conclusion comes from a thorough understanding of the sites’ opportunities and the clients’ understanding of the importance of spirituality. JOHN HAKIM 2009-B081-10007 ASSIGNMENT Four

PRINCEOndia’s RETREAT

Plan and Landscape

Eric has visual connections from the interior space to the landscape. The interior space has been designed to have a focal point, the wish wall frame. This is a store for Eric's wishes and dreams that he wants to achieve. A better way of enabling Eric to connect with the power of now through writing and storing his thoughts, given that he is a calm person. The wish wall and the rock are to give life to the retreat space. Each time Eric retreats, the entire site gains a layer of meaning, and relevance to him. This is the main purpose of the design idea (connection).

Sectional perspective B-B The sectional perspective shows how Eric would possibly experiences his retreat These shrubs are found within the university and could reduce the risk of experimentation with exotic types. Furthermore, using these shrubs could be of great advantage since they do not attract bad insects that might cause harm to Eric (photos taken by John ). Proposed tree type could grow to a height of about 5-6m and have a canopy size of about 3-5m. The last 2 types of plants are used for the planting scheme because of their ability to remain green all year round. They are commonly planted in gardens in Arua where Eric comes from. The space was designed to enhance a reflective mood. The wish wall seems to accomomdate every structural element itself drawn from the the idea of visual balance. The rock is used as spiritual symbol, intended to remind Eric that no matter what has happened or is going to happen, he is part of something more stonger - this is the point that connects him with the past infant experience at birth.

Design idea mingle mingle addition and or subtraction of elements, adding another to achieve a gentle flow. a stepped floor slab to flow with the site; uniting the levels using landscape elements; the third element adds an aesthetic value to the floors softly. use of shapes in space and on the ground, introducing light as the third element to allow building interact with the users. Design objectives The design considerations seek to achieve the following objectives To create stimulating environment that are accessible and aesthetically pleasing to its users To encourage visual communication between users in the building and the landscape To allow for flexibility and adaptability in space usage To achieve an energy efficient building Innovative use of materials

Landscape features Demolish building, retain floor slab as a historic feature and modify stairs for sitting; reuse bricks for paving walkways. Environmentally benign, healthy materials a. Use materials such as porous burnt adobe bricks, stones, concrete pavers for paving; less toxic, allows rain water soak into the ground. b. outdoor lounge, eating and exhibition space; paved using salvaged bricks from the [to be] demolished staff guest house; used in an area with less pedestrian traffic and requires less maintenance. c. resilient flooring material such as porcelain tiles to cater for wear and tear resulting from big number of users accessing the facility

Pg. 20

Cultural context Current user movement patterns are random, and the current landscape is restricted since it describes most users as trespassers. The landscape design soaks in existing user movement patterns by creating continues blend between hardscape and softscape down playing the directional element of the main accesses offering flow into the softscape; hence removing the restrictions that are in the current.

Shading systems and Renewable Energy Technologies a. Solar power grid as landscape pergolas; provides shade, energy for lighting landscape and power spots for users with laptop. b. Overhang patterns cause users to interact with building and also carrying solar panels as part of their roofing material.

Adding trees into the interface, allowing in light, aiding cross ventilation and shading intermediate space Zoning, orientation and siting Location of ramp as a main fire escape element for all users from the deck, situated away from kitchen and service providers zone The location allows users interact with building and landscape with the different levels; offering both indoor and outdoor views as one ascends to the deck making it the third element that adds the building to the landscape.
