HAGS were approached by Runnymede Borough Council to undertake refurbishment works at Murray House Play area. The play area comprised of a multiplay unit, which although over 15 years old was still structurally sound, a set of swings and a number of benches and bins.

HAGS proposed that the multiplay unit would be repainted and the existing plywood panels would be replaced with super durable HDPE. The swing frames would be repainted and the benches and bins refurbished, with new surfacing laid around the benches and gate. This refurbishment combined a major improvement in the look of the area with reduced maintenance through the use of the latest technology materials (all compliant with EN1176 and EN1177) and the addition of eco mulch surfacing to the bench and pedestrian gate areas to prevent surface erosion. The option of a refurbishment enabled Runnymede BC to carry out the work within current maintenance budgets without having to look for additional capital funding.

Work on site was completed within just 2 weeks and the results are stunning - the units look better than new and are good for another 10 years at least. HAGS successfully tendered for the refurbishment of 25 sites located throughout the London Borough of Enfield. The scope of works included the removal and replacement of end of life equipment, modifications to surfacing, landscaping works and the installation of new equipment. HAGS and LB Enfield agreed a detailed programme of works for each site totalling £330,000 and works commenced in October 2015. The tender also required HAGS to complete a detailed schedule of rates for future refurbishment works. The largest site by value was Pymmes Park (just under £39,000). Works included the removal of grass mounds and installation of an overhead rotator, replacement of a multiplay unit and replacement of a Mobilus unit with a HAGS Scorpion unit. Work at other sites included replacing swings, climbing units and multiplay units. Barry Smart of LB Enfield comments “HAGS worked in close partnership with our officers to replace play equipment that had reached end of serviceable life. The programme has been a major success in terms of long term maintenance savings and improved play safety. Works were completed quickly and efficiently with minimum impact to park users.”

HAGS were approached by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in November 2015 to discuss the best value proposition for improvements to six play areas in the Barnsley suburb of Penistone.

Following a site inspection, HAGS proposed a refurbishment programme whereby defective items would be replaced and the corroded surfaces treated and repainted. The refurbishment programme was scheduled to commence in the Spring to ensure the areas were fully available for the Summer. During this process, rotten timbers and damaged parts were replaced, the steel posts were repainted and the units brought back to “as new” condition

Jo Birch, Parks Supervisor for Barnsley MBC, commented “With a relatively small amount of funding raised for improving existing play spaces in Penistone, thanks to working in partnership with HAGS, they repaired and repainted a number of sites across the area, giving them a new lease of life in readiness for the summer ahead. Durham County Council contacted HAGS for advice on whether some old skate-park equipment was re-usable. The equipment in question had been removed from another site and stored at a depot for some time. After careful assessment of the condition of the equipment, HAGS proposed a refurbishment procedure which including collecting the equipment and returning it to our Selby manufacturing facility for refurbishment works, delivery and re-installation at the customer’s new site. Broken welds were repaired, bent sections replaced with new steel sections, missing parts were replaced and ramp-ends were modified. The units were all shot-blasted to remove rust and old paint and then powdercoated and oven-cured. The equipment was delivered back to the new site and installed to the customer’s exact requirements, providing a brand new skate facility for the community. The Outdoor Sport & Leisure Officers at Durham County Council commented “This is the first time we have refurbished skate equipment and we are delighted with the completed project both in terms of the equipment quality and the overall service provided.”

The project was completed on time and within budget providing a “good-as-new” facility.
