AFC’s religious insensitivity DEAR EDITOR, I write to condemn the AFC for its religious insensitivity in calling for the convening of parliament on the eve of Diwali, the most significant celebration for Hindus in Guyana and one in which almost every Guyanese enjoys through its participation in the motorcades, concerts and meals (delicacies). Hindus in Guyana were fuming with rage that my very good friends Moses Nagamootoo, Khemraj Ramjattan and Veerasammy Rammaya and other M.Ps and executives of AFC have the audacity to sign on to the party’s demand that parliament meet on the eve of Diwali. At the West Coast motorcade and various other Diwali related events where I was present and in the mandirs on Sunday morning, it was a subject of discussion – like myself, they cannot understand how the AFC, a party that should have been different from the others, could display such gross disrespect for Hindus on insisting that parliament meet on October 22 when Hindus are in the midst of celebrating their festival which is followed by a public holiday in recognition of the importance of the religious event. Worse yet, they feel Moses, Khemraj, Rammaya, all of whom come from Hindu families, and have Hindu neighbors, should know better to seek the convening of parliament on such an auspicious occasion for Hindus. These gentlemen are my friends but I cannot let them off the hook by not criticizing their insensitivity towards Hindus. It shows they don’t even

know their own culture. How could these men allow themselves to be led astray to disrespect the entire Hindu population? Here it is that non-Hindus and non-Indians could appreciate Diwali but the AFC M.Ps can’t show any respect for the festival. Openness and tolerance of others faith must begin at the very top of any organization. When Hindus themselves don’t understand their practices and traditions, they open themselves to humiliation and become the laughing stock of others. Hindus, in fact all Guyanese, are disappointed in the AFC for its religious insensitivity. A public apology is needed. DIWALI is an eternally sacred Hindu event of great spiritual significance in the Rig Vedic Adivasi Puranic culture of Hinduism and Hindus. The extraordinary secular features of public displays of pomp and splendor should not detract from the essential protocols of devotion and worship and respect for those who do. Recognition of the SHAKTI (invulnerable divine powers) of Maha Lakshmi Devi, the Divine Mother, is of paramount importance to Hindus in Guyana. I expect my friend Moses, for whom I have great regard and consistently extolled his virtues, and by extension the AFC to be mindful of DIWALI being a national festival with spiritual, religious and temporal features in respect of which any form of dis-respect or violation will redound to the

discredit of the country and the nation. DIWALI is a legacy of our illustrious indentured immigrant ancestors and should be seen and duly respected as such. Calling for reconvening parliament on Diwali eve is very disrespectful – it is no different than reconvening parliament on Christmas eve or the eve of Eid. Diwali is not a one day event. It is observed over a five day period and it really comes to an end on the sixth day with Goberdhan puja, the day after official observance of Diwali. It is for this reason that parliament goes into recess in many societies (India, Mauritius, Fiji, Natal, Durban, Guadeloupe, etc.) with large number of Hindus – they don’t wish to appear insensitive to Hindus. Even in the US, Congress is in recess as is Canada and Britain. In neighboring Trinidad and Surinam, parliament has been in recess for the festival. But in Guyana, it appears it is okay for theAFC to disrespect Hindus. It is also noted that while Diwali is officially celebrated as a holiday on October 22, the day before and after Diwali are very auspicious in which all Hindus engage in fasting and performing

pujas. Also, this year, because of the eclipse and the position of the moon, some experts have claimed that Diwali is on October 22 while others claim it is on the 23. Because of the interpretation, and to please Goddess Lakshmi, many Hindus are observing the festival with celebrations on both nights and some mandirs in NY are having special pujas on both evenings. At any rate, it has been the custom in Guyana that deyas are light in front of homes of Hindus on the eve of Diwali and business close up early on that day to facilitate rituals. Parliamentary business cannot and should not be conducted on that day as it is inauspicious for Hindus – Hindus close out business on that day for the old year in the Hindu calendar; they don’t engage in new business. AFC should seriously think of attending cultural sensitive courses and to learn about the religious practices of the various faiths in Guyana. The party leadership needs training in religious sensitivity. They have to be trained to follow the practices of peers in India, Durban, Mauritius, Fiji, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia, etc. all of which show their respect for the Indian population. Vishnu Bisram

We need to stop...

From page 4 preoccupied and spend hours discussing futile ways of ending it without ever really addressing its root cause – the political, social, economic and moral collapse of our society due to white collar crime. It is this type of crime that inflicts far more damage upon us collectively at both a global and national level than all the street crime combined. Just one example among so many is the manufacture of alcohol and tobacco that arguably kills and injures more people than all street thugs put together are satisfied. Crime reflects our blindness to the fundamental interconnectedness of the people. The solution does not lie with our current criminal injustice system which is so unjust and corrupt, focusing primarily on punishment rather than redemption. We must understand that just as you cannot cure alcololism in a brewery, so you cannot reform inmates in a prison. You cannot punish and reconcile at the same time. Our prisons are simply concentration camps for poor youths – they are criminal training camps. The system is not working. The solution of crime requires us to look deep into its causes – Guyana needs to stop corporate crime so that we can control street crime. The above was first published in 2005 by Kaieteur News and Stabroek News, today it is the worse cancer of corruption everywhere. More so, the Chambers of Commerce and Manufacturer of Association soon will be headed or contracted by these corrupt now come businessmen and drug sellers. This sitting government is the fuel for corruption which operates like a runaway train and has no mercy on society which brings about several evil ills. When a nation at the ballot box chooses to support this way of life corruption of all forms will continue to spread. These days newspapers bring you some of the corruption but there are many more to be investigated but who will bell the cats? NKR

Police refuse to hand over GECOM aims at fluent remains to MFK’s relatives delivery of elections results Police are refusing to hand over the remains found at Cummingslodge, East Coast Demerara, a month ago, to relatives of missing businessman Mohamed F. Khan, although relatives are convinced that it is the businessman. Police sources have told this newspaper that relatives of the missing businessman, some of whom have flown in from overseas, are seeking to have the remains so that they can bury it and bring some amount of closure to the situation. The relatives have positively identified a belt and a pair of trousers that were found with the decomposed corpse. The identification facilitated a post mortem examination on the remains

Mohamed F. Khan on Monday. However, police are insisting that they will rely on DNA before they could safely conclude that the remains belong to Khan. But since the DNA process through the police

might take some time before the results are obtained, relatives were advised that they could write to the Commissioner of Police seeking permission to have a private DNA test done, which will be much quicker. In the meantime, the remains are being kept by the Lyken Funeral Parlour. “All they (family) want is closure…but we cannot give them the remains to bury, because we have to be one hundred percent certain we are dealing with a crime here. If it turns out that it is not him, then what happens?” a source at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary reasoned. Investigators have taken samples from Khan’s sister which they hope to match with those taken from the remains. Meanwhile, in light of the questions that surround the positive identification of the remains, police investigations into Khan’s possible murder cannot proceed to any great length. Khan had made some damning allegations against a former business partner and his disappearance has been linked to those claims. He had pointed fingers at the former business partner after an attempt on his life in early July this year. So far the police have taken statements from some of the businessman’s relatives, but have not yet detained for questioning any of the persons who Khan had claimed he had disputes with. “We have not reached that stage as yet,” the detective told this newspaper.

By Abena Rockcliffe As he admitted that other jurisdictions around the world with populations many times Guyana’s receive elections results way faster, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally hinted that the body will be looking to be much more efficient in the timely delivery of election results this time around. The Chairman spoke about this at the recent conclusion of a two-day media and elections training for journalists organized by the High Commission of Canada and Guyana Press Association. At that forum, Dr. Surujbally told local journalists about the need to investigate stories, look beyond the surface of things, research and get the real story or, in some cases, the story behind the story. He referred to comments made by an experienced journalist as it relates to the role of a member of the press in putting pressure on individuals or entities to get the best out of them. The veteran journalist was essentially encouraging young journalists to practice proactive and investigative journalism. “If GECOM gave results in three days in 2006 then two and a half days in 2011, why not in two and a half hours… he (the veteran journalist) was right. We should be thinking how to get it in less than two and a half days; I

don’t know, maybe in 2 and a half hours we might get it,” said Dr. Surujbally. The Chairman made note that he recently returned from Brazil elections in which 140 million voters took part, yet the results were delivered within three hours. He noted, however, that while GECOM should be looking at methodologies to deliver results faster, it must be considered that the systems in Guyana are quite different. He gave the example that if everything else is accurate but “someone messes up in Lethem, the poor Chief Elections Officer cannot go on the stage and declare results because it will be incorrect.” Dr. Surujbally explained that in such a case everything will have to be rechecked and that has to be done in the presence of the presiding officer, deputy clerk and political party agents “and these things take time.” The Chairman also made mention of the terrain in Guyana and pointed out that it can be difficult to carry ballot boxes in floods as well as to and from areas with no airstrips. Yet, he said that these constraints do not negate the fact that better can be done and journalists have the right to seek betterment. Back in 2011, Dr. Surujbally had promised that he would have put his best into getting better systems in place so as to ensure elections results can be delivered in a timely manner. He had said, “Accordingly, I hereby give a commitment that I will try my utmost to pursue an initiative for a pilot project to carry out a comparative voting system when we embark on the preparations for local government elections next year. And I need your collective support on the matter.” The Commission had incurred the wrath of many stakeholders including political parties contesting the elections, and

GECOM Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally international groups for the delay in releasing the final results. In fact, it took GECOM nearly 72 hours after the closing of polls to provide an anxious populace with the results, fuelling speculations of skullduggery and complicity. As he defended the delay in releasing the final results of the 2011 National Elections, the GECOM Chairman said that the Commission has held fast to its mandate and to the laws that govern its actions and methodology, and has delivered a result that can withstand scrutiny, “even in the face of flak from an uncomprehending and sometimes, unsympathetic public.” The GECOM Chairman noted that elections “are arguably the single most important tile in the complex mosaic of democracy and that is why the stakeholders must at all times try to get it right”. He explained that in light of this, the results, which were derived from the elections that were conducted in accordance with international best practices, must be absolutely accurate and unchallengeable. However, Dr. Surujbally urged that the nation think about the alternative if the Elections Commission did not pursue the path that it did. “If we were to make unsubstantiated and (Continued on page 24)

Nurse infected with Ebola in Spain cleared of disease (Reuters) - A Spanish nurse infected with Ebola in Madrid while caring for a priest who later died of the virus has been cleared of the deadly disease after testing negative two times in a row, doctors said on Tuesday. “We consider her cured of the Ebola virus by World Health Organization criteria,” said Jose Ramon Arribas, doctor at the Carlos III Hospital in Madrid where the nurse is being treated. Teresa Romero, 44, was diagnosed with Ebola two weeks ago, becoming the first person to catch the disease outside West Africa in the current outbreak which has killed thousands in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The infection in a highsecurity ward caused recriminations in Spain, with health workers saying hospitals were not prepared to cope with an Ebola outbreak and staff had not received adequate training and equipment. Romero tested negative twice with a 48-hour interval between examinations. She will not be discharged from hospital until she has fully recovered. Ebola can cause severe damage to

A woman holds a placard reading, ‘’We are all Teresa’’, during a demonstration called by ‘’Marea Blanca’’ (White Tide) movement. vital organs like the kidneys and liver. The virus spreads through contact with bodily fluids and can cause fever, bleeding, vomiting and diarrhea. Romero had cared for two priests repatriated from West Africa with the disease who later died. She was treated in an isolation unit at the hospital. Her husband and 14 other people who came into contact

with Romero were also sent to a special isolation unit in the hospital to be monitored for signs of Ebola, though none have so far shown any symptoms. Romero was treated with a drip of human serum containing antibodies from Ebola sufferers who had survived the disease and other drugs which the government and doctors have declined to name.

Ebola cases rise sharply in western Sierra Leone FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) — After emerging months ago in eastern Sierra Leone, Ebola is now hitting the western edges of the country where the capital is located with dozens of people falling sick each day, the government said Tuesday. So many people are dying that removing bodies is reportedly a problem. Forty-nine confirmed cases of Ebola emerged in just one day, Monday, in two Ebola zones in and around the capital, the National Ebola Response Center, or NERC, said. Lawmaker Claude Kamanda who represents a western area said more than 20 deaths are being reported daily. Kamanda told the local Politico newspaper that authorities are experiencing challenges collecting corpses from both quarantined and non-quarantined homes. Authorities say the uncontrolled movement of people from the interior to Waterloo which is the gateway to Freetown, the capital, has fueled the increase of Ebola cases in the west. There is a strong feeling that people are

violating the quarantines elsewhere and coming to Freetown through Waterloo. There are 851 total confirmed Ebola cases in the two zones, called Western Area Urban and Western Area Rural, the NERC said. In numbers of cases, they may soon surpass a former epicenter of the outbreak in the country, the eastern districts of Kenema and Kailahun where there have been a total of 1,012 confirmed cases. No new cases were reported Monday in Kenema

and Kailahun but a World Health Organization spokeswoman said it is too early to declare that the epidemic has burned itself out in the east. “There was a drop in new cases in Kenema and Kailahun and fingers were crossed but there has been a bit of a flare up thanks to a couple of unsafe burials,” said Margaret Harris, WHO’s spokeswoman in Sierra Leone. “So it’s too early to say we have a real decline ... definitely too early to say it’s been beaten there.”

Rupununi logger indicted in Court hears Newtown resident drinking buddy’s stabbing death impersonated prison officer A Rupununi logger has in an argument. charged with murder. When been charged with the murder of his 35-year-old friend. Martin Salvadorie, 48, who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday, is alleged to have stabbed his friend Wilson James to death in Nappi Village, Central Rupununi, last Wednesday. It was reported that the two villagers were imbibing piwari (a local Amerindian alcoholic beverage) at James’ home last Wednesday night when they became involved

The quarrel reportedly led to a scuffle during which James was stabbed several times about his body with a knife. James, a farmer and father of three, died as a result of the injuries sustained. The police had said that his body was discovered about 10:00 hours the following day. Doctors had pronounced him dead after he was taken to the Lethem Hospital. Following investigations, Salvadorie was arrested and

the charge was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning he was not required to plead. The case was prosecuted by Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant. After the brief hearing, the logger was remanded to prison. The case was transferred and is set to be called at the Lethem Magistrates’ Court on December 1.

Ebola fears prompt Trinidad union to bar members unloading ship from Ghana PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - CMC — The powerful Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) yesterday prevented its members from unloading a ship from West Africa saying that the stateowned oil company, PETROTIN, had not formulated any protocols to deal with the deadly Ebola virus that has killed nearly 5,000 people in West Africa. But Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan said that the union was over reacting and that the ship ‘Overseas Yellowstone’ had been cleared to dock at port of Pointe-a-Pierre, south of here. “Unlike clearance processes that occurred when a vessel that had visited Ghana was docked in Chaguaramas recently, PETROTRIN has called in ‘scab labour’ to help dock the vessel at Pointe-a-Pierre. “In light of the heightened global Ebola threat, regular port workers have refused to dock the vessel unless PETROTRIN

Ancil Roget applies the proper procedures and protocols,” the Khan said. Ghana is not among the five West African countries from where passengers have been banned from entering Trinidad and Tobago, but OWTU president general Ancil Roget told a news conference it matters not, given the fact that the ships normally would use people from other countries.

“Therefore any threat or any exposure to the Ebola virus would put at risk not only the employee, but the home, family, community and therefore it is in the national interest…that we call on the company to put in place the necessary protocols in the interest of the workers at Point-a-Pierre. Roget said that given the fact that the ship had been at other ports, it is possible that someone could be carrying the virus for which there is no known cure. But Khan said the OWTU is playing games because it is fully aware of the tests that had been conducted on the vessel. “The ship has been fully cleared medically. There is absolutely no reason to invoke OSHA or anything. It is just delaying tactics by the union,” he said, adding that “at the end of the day, the ministry has done its duty [and] there is nothing to worry about”.

An interior worker was arrested last Friday after he approached a police rank pretending to be the Principal Prison Officer, a city court heard yesterday. The man, Andre Singh reportedly approached Corporal Devon Lowe at the Brickdam Police Station last Friday, Georgetown professing to be the Principal Prison Officer stationed at the Mazaruni Prisons. The court heard too that Singh, a resident of DaSilva Street, Newtown, was carrying around a pair of handcuffs which belonged to the Guyana Prison Service. It is unclear under what pretext Singh allegedly approached the Police Corporal. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant did not reveal the details of the crime.

Accused: Andre Singh The charges were read to Singh by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. While Singh pleaded guilty to obtaining the $4500 handcuffs without lawful authority, he denied

pretending to be a prison official. The Newtown resident claimed that the handcuffs he usually “fetches around” were actually a gift he had received three years ago from his uncle – a retired prison officer. He said he had never been charged or convicted before. After checking with with her law books, the Chief Magistrate entered a not guilty plea for Singh and placed him on $60,000 bail $30,000 on each charge. The case was transferred to Magistrate Geeta ChandanEdmond for trial. During a brief proceeding before Magistrate ChandanEdmond, the Prosecution revealed that it will be calling three witnesses to support their case. The trial is set to commence on October 30.

Former Turks & Caicos premier, Misick, scores first round victory PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos - CMC – The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Court of Appeal Monday granted permission for several government ministers including former premier Michael Misick to take their concerns to the London-based Privy Council. The former ministers, who are facing allegations of corruption allegedly committed during Misick’s tenure as head of government, had challenged the impartiality and independence of Jamaican judge Paul Harrison who was selected to hear the case in the TCI.The accused are also arguing whether their rights to a fair trial are being infringed by Justice Harrison. There have been questions as to whether the

Michael Misick Jamaican-born jurist would be independent or impartial because of the terms and conditions under which he was hired. Harrison was appointed as the judge for the corruption trials during the Interim Administration when London imposed direct rule

on the British dependent territory and following a probe by a one-man Commission. Last week, Misick welcomed the not guilty verdict on corruption charges against former Cayman Islands premier McKeeva Bush, saying Britain had been on a campaign to tarnish the “good name” of the islands. Misick told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that London had been on a “crusade to tarnish the g o o d name of leading politicians in British Overseas Territories like what they tried to do to Mr. Bush and myself…” The seven members earlier this month found Bush not guilty on all related charges of charges of corruption.

Venezuela’s Maduro approval rating drops to 30 percent, poll says CARACAS (Reuters) Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s approval rating dropped to 30.2 percent in September from 35.4 percent in July, acco r d i n g t o a survey by pollster Datanalisis, amid an ongoing economic crisis that has weighed on his popularity. The OPEC nation faces the highest annual inflation in the Western Hemisphere at 63.4 percent, chronic shortages of consumer goods and an e c o nomy that business leaders say has entered recession. T h e p o l l c o n d ucted between Sept. 25 and Oct. 7

Nicolas Maduro showed that 80.1 percent of those interviewed have an unfavorable perception of the

country’s state-led economic model, created by late socialist leader Hugo Chavez. Maduro narrowly won the presidency last year following Chavez’s death from cancer and his popularity has slid consistently since then. The overall situation of the country was viewed negatively by 81.6 percent of the population, according to the poll. Support for Henrique Capriles, two-time opposition presidential candidate and governor of the second-most populous state of Miranda, was 42.1 percent.

Creative Protests: Where is Guyana’s Kublalsingh? Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh has been on hunger strike in the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for some thirty-four days now. He is protesting the construction of a section of a major highway since it is contended that some 300 families will be displaced and about 5,000 persons indirectly affected by these works. This is his second hunger strike. The first one went for twenty-one days. Kublalsingh collapsed last week, but has resumed his hunger strike. There is now brewing skepticism about this present hunger strike since many find it hard to believe that anyone can go without food and water for so long. They should be reminded that the hunger strike of IRA prisoner Bobby Sands went for sixty-six days before Sands died. Kublalsingh still has some way to go to beat that record, but it is hoped that he will end his protest soon, since he has already made his point and there is no need for him to risk his life. It is hoped that he stops his hunger strike before it is too late. In an amazing twist, a young man, Ravi Maharaj, went on strike to counter the hunger strike of Kublalsingh. He was opposed to the hunger strike by Kublalsingh and so he proceeded on his

own hunger strike. He collapsed after only five days and had to be hospitalised. He has wisely decided to end his hunger strike, but feels that he has brought attention to his own cause to oppose the movement led by Kublalsingh. In the past in Guyana, Eusi Kwayana was known for using fasting, rather than hunger strikes, as a form of political protest. And in the early 1990s, Shaka Rodney went on a fast to press for an inquiry into the death of his father. He was able to have the government file charges against Gregory Smith. Fasting as a form of political protest was popularized by Mahatma Gandhi, and was one of the main forms of protest used by Gandhi in his fight for India’s Independence and in seeking to bring an end to factional violence in his country after Independence. I do not support hunger strikes as a form of protest. It is much too dangerous. Fasting can be differentiated from a hunger strike in that the person that is fasting does not deny himself food for an extended period. Fasting can be for a limited period - say ten to twelve hours at most. And water is usually permissible. This is known as limited fasting. Limited fasting is a powerful form of protest and indeed can be deemed a creative form of protest.

Dem boys seh...

Is sheer dumping tekking place Nobody like fuh tek blame. Most people who get catch does either run and hide or point at somebody else. And even if is deh best friend, dem does end up dumping them. Is like de GuySuCo man who slap he boss at Skeldon. He get dump de same night. De workers strike, de factory shut down and de whole country get blackout. GP-Hell seh is not dem fault. Dem dump de blame pun de workers who strike. Dem boys see a whole lot of dumping going on lately. Dem Chinee workers at Marriott decide that dey backyard deh right in de Atlantic Ocean. Dey know anything goes in Guyana. Dem know that de big boys, like de Bees, got dem back…because dem all in de ting together. So dem start dumping waste oil by de seawall. Lucky ting two tourists see dem and tek pictures and videos. A good Coast Guard rank, who was doing some dumping in the outhouse, pull up he pants halfway, run over and tell de Chinee people to stop dey dumping. Dem refuse to shake he hands. Recently de Sports Ministry dump de kantractah who suppose to mek de pavilion and guard hut at Leonora. Dem seh de man did wukkin too slow. That is when all de trouble start. When de Ministry try to collect from de insurance people who guarantee de wuk, nothing happen. De Ministry dump dem in court. A couple weeks back, Bheri Bheri decide that he ain’t tekking no blame fuh be specialty hospital. He seh that de Surendra people submit false bank guarantee. That kantractah done walk away wid millions. Bheri Bheri dump them and now de Govt. suing fuh get back de money wha dem overpay. Surendra just like Fip who tek plenty money fuh build de roads to Amaila and then Donald dump he as soon as he become President. Deh gat one more big dumping fuh tek place. Dem boys know nuff ah dem frighten wha gon come out. Nobody want to see wha documents dem boys got to reveal. Is a whole lot. Dem boys waiting fuh dump it pun dem. Talk half and watch out fuh de dump truck.

Instead of holding up a picket, the person on a limited fast - say from dusk to dawn for one day can send a far more potent message than a thousand men holding pickets. Fasting is a non-violent form of protest. It does not impede on the rights of others. It is not disruptive. It however sends a strong moral message. The protestor is demonstrating his or her willingness to make a personal sacrifice for the good of others. As a form of protest, fasting allows the protestor to not just make known his or her grouse to bear some personal sacrifice

in support of his or her cause. The protestor becomes more psychologically attuned to the cause that he or she is advocating by being willing to deprive him/herself of something. It is a way of demonstrating your moral conviction to a cause, as distinct from a mere interest in that cause. It shows you are personally convinced about the righteousness of your cause and willing to make a sacrifice for your beliefs. A person that is engaged in fasting as a form of protest attracts an audience, many of whom come forward to offer their support. It is a way of

linking more people to the cause being pursued bringing people together in furtherance of a cause. Fasting should however be very limited, and need not be undertaken by one person, but can be rotated for example by more than one person fasting for a few hours at a time, after of course consulting their doctors. No one should go on a fast without first consulting their doctor. The opposition parties in Guyana have been taking to the streets with pickets demanding local government elections. But this form of peaceful protest has been ineffective. The opposition

itself has recognized that it needs to be more creative in the manner it protests, but so far it has not had anyone go on a limited fast as a form of protest. Many people are also concerned about the threat to muzzle Kaieteur News and about the vindictive acts launched against the publisher of this newspaper. Where are the Kublalsinghs of Guyana?

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN

Every Guyanese should protest this decision of Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Anyone in or out of Guyana who has kept abreast of this column would know I believe Guyana has magistrates who are out of control. They would know that I have been very critical of hellish and diabolically erroneous decisions by almost ninety percent of our magistrates. I am currently involved in a matter before the Judicial Service Commission against Magistrate Judy Latchman. I

have heard nothing on this matter since I received a letter from the Chancellor informing me that he has placed my complaint with the Judicial Service Commission and has sought an explanation from the Chief Magistrate, Ms. Beharry. I will be taking steps shortly to enquire of the status of my complaint. If I lose, so be it, but I believe this magistrate should not be on the bench, and I am going to

appear before the Commission to so request. For those not familiar with this case, it centered on the refusal of the Magistrate to grant bail to an accused woman even though the prosecutor did not object to bail and informed the Magistrate that the accused may have been wrongfully charged due to a bureaucratic mistake by the police. The story of the mediocrity and cruelty in the

magistracy goes on and on like a stuck record. Berbice Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs last week jailed two persons for six months for leaving Guyana illegally. One of the accused, Arina Francis, is a teenager. Before I was born, Guyanese took a boat, crossed the Corentyne River and entered Suriname. That has been the norm since then. No day passes without a number of Guyanese landing on Surinamese territory

without legally declaring their entry. Was it that Isaacs had a bad day? If she did, she should have stayed at home when she felt she wasn’t feeling well. To jail two persons for six months, including a mere teenager for entering our neighbouring country illegally is bestial, unforgiving and simply sickening. You don’t jail people for such an offence. You don’t take away the freedom of a teenager for such an offence. But here is the thing. The lawyers in Guyana are going to shut their mouths, because they have a duty to their clients, and if they protest this cruelty of Sherdel Isaacs then their clients will suffer if Isaacs chooses to be vindictive. It was the identical fear I received when I went door to door to ask the lawyers for a legal opinion on what Latchman did. “Freddie don’t quote me,” Freddie I will skip this one.” Freddie, I make my living practicing law.” “Wuh wrang with yuh, Freddie, I ain’t going deh.” “Freddie you try deh.” “Freddie bhai, wuh yuh gun do, this is Guyana.” These are just a sample of the emanations I received on the Judy Latchman bail scandal when I approached some lawyers. The exception was Mr. BurchSmith, President of the Bar Association. He said he can be quoted as saying that if the Magistrate did act that way against the accused then it was unusual. I am warning this society that unless they speak out against the ongoing insensitivities of most of our magistrates, one day an accused who feels he cannot

Frederick Kissoon take the oppression may freak out. Magistrates are filling up the Camp Street remand with unreasonable bail impositions. They do not deny bail, but assign terribly high bail knowing full well that the poor accused cannot raise that sum. It breaks your heart to see the overflowing of mediocrity in this country. I taught philosophy to a number of presently serving magistrates and so jejune were many of them that if you had told me that these people would one day become magistrates I would have cried. I honestly believe that if these magistrates go into private practice they wouldn’t even make enough to eat; who would take them. Two of these magistrates never uttered one word in my tutorials when they were my students. I am calling on our lawyers (I will speak personally to a number of them) to appeal these two decisions of Ms. Isaacs and request bail. And I am calling on my political comrades to let us travel to Berbice and stage a picket in front of her office. We must not let this legal cruelty go unpunished. Where is Red Thread? This girl is a teenager. She didn’t rob or shoot anyone. She didn’t harm anyone. These two persons left Guyana to seek a better living in Suriname. They left a country that has virtually collapsed and has silly people with too much power in control.

Digital Technology disagrees with accusations of favouritism Digital Technology Group in boasting of its continuous awards of contracts and projects says that the company’s achievement stems not only from the quality of its products, but also from its sustained business success as a reliable supplier to the local market. This statement is in response to an article published by Kaieteur News on Monday 20th October,

2014 captioned “Controversial Digital Technology Wins Another Contract”. “Digital Technology Group adheres to ethical practices and commits to providing high-value products and services to our customers. Further, Digital Technology Group shares strategic alliances with internationally renowned companies like Dell, LG

- boasts of continuous contract awards Electronics, Cisco, Symantec to name a few. These alliances allow the company to offer its customers quality products and services at competitive prices,” the company disclosed in a press statement issued yesterday. “In the past, Kaieteur News attempted twice to ridicule and slander the

LIAT adds three more weekly flights from Dec. 1 A delegation from LIAT’s Commercial Department will be in the country this week for two road shows to promote the launch of three additional flights per week between Barbados and Ogle Airport, taking the airline’s weekly services to 10. The team will be at the intersection of Church and Quamina Streets on Friday, and at Quamina and Middle Streets on Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm both days, according to LIAT in a statement. “LIAT will be offering special fares to current and prospective customers who attend

the road shows and everyone will be able to book flights right there on location.” In addition to the many giveaways, those in attendance will be able to win free flights on LIAT by posting pictures of themselves from the road shows on the company’s Instagram and Facebook pages. LIAT currently operates a daily service between Ogle Airport and Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados. The three additional flights per week will be added from December 1, 2014.

credible reputation of the Digital Technology Group and its authenticity of products and services provided. Even though the said statements were refuted by Digital Technology and their Professional Partners, Kaieteur News is apparently still on the course of trying to tarnish the reputation of this company. “In the article published on Monday 20th October, 2014, several statements were made about the Digital Technology Group’s reputation on the authenticity of products and services provided to the general public and the company’s negligence and favouritism in not adhering to standard bid procedure. While these absurd statements are once again used as the basis for attempting to destroy Digital Technology’s reputation, there was no evidence provided by Kaieteur News to prove them true. This first and

foremost basic responsibility of any investigative reporting is that evidence must support statement.” The company further stated “The article also highlighted and summarized some of the major projects that Digital Technology was awarded in the past. If Digital Technology’s reputation is being questioned in relation to the authenticity of products and services provided, then why were the projects successful and thus the company being awarded projects continuously? “Kaieteur News spoke of the authenticity of the Dell brand and the products provided by DT to a project for the University of Guyana and concluded that the products are not authentic or of a low quality Dell products. If this is so, then why has Dell awarded the Digital Technology Group as being a ‘Preferred Partner” for over 6 years in Guyana? It must

be noted that one of the criteria to become partner for these international brands is continuous technical and sales training. Therefore, the staff members of the Digital Technology Group constantly undergo training provided directly by these international companies.” The company continued “Since our establishment in 2003, the Digital Technology Group has grown to become one of the premier technology-based companies, and an organization known for its technical and entrepreneurial expertise. This achievement stems not only from the quality of our products, but also from our sustained business success as a reliable supplier to the local market. The Digital Technology Group enjoys an outstanding reputation as a leader in the field of technology, for our character as a company committed to promoting the interests of our stakeholders, our employees, our customers and the local communities we serve. ‘We would like to thank Kaieteur News for recognizing these outstanding qualities since they would have interviewed the CEO of The Digital Technology Group in March and April of 2009 and sought his advice on the ‘Conficker Virus Threat’. Kaieteur News obviously analyzed the market and concluded that the Digital Technology Group was the leader in this arena; known for its technical and entrepreneurial expertise and based on this assessment, they sought the expert’s advice…. “Digital Technology welcomes competition in this highly competitive industry. UGLS makes donations to three institutions

UGLS President Patrice Wishart, hands over the items to the Pediatric Ward of the GPHC, represented by Ms. Rhonda Henry. The University of Guyana Law Society (UGLS) yesterday made donations to three institutions with the aim of starting their tenure on what they believe is the right footing. The society earlier this month elected a new President and Vice President, and both executives pledged to raise the bar and standards within the Law Department by involving corporate stakeholders and interested parties. “We knew that the 220 students of the department would have been able to contribute items of clothing

and accessories, toys, and books which would aid those in need. Our first donation was made to the Pediatric Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital where clothing, toys and books were handed over to Ms. Rhonda Henry and Dr. Sara Singh, for the children of the ward,” UGLS Vice President Devin Singh noted. “We then made our way to the Guyana Relief Council, where donations of clothing were made to Ms Lynette Carter, to aid those affected by instances such as fires. The final institution we

visited was the Bless the Children’s Home Orphanage in Industry, where we gave books, clothing and stationery. The foundations visited were extremely grateful for our contributions and the UGLS on behalf of the Department of Law was delighted to give back and see the joy and gratitude that the young children and representatives of these organizations had. The UGLS hopes that we can continue to give back, in whatever little way we can so that, if even for one second we could help to put a smile on someone’s face.”

Campaign Financing…

We are willing to comply with legislation but not in isolation - Granger Opposition Leader David Granger says that while his party does not have a problem with complying with the “Campaign Financing” legislation it would not be submitting any documents in isolation. Granger’s comment comes on the heels of Guyana Elections Commissioner Charles Corbin, saying that political parties across the board seem not to have a general disposition towards supporting the legislation. Granger told Kaieteur News yesterday that his party is concerned about the issue, since they do not want dirty money infiltrating their campaign. He said that measures should be put in place to ensure this is done. The Opposition Leader said that he has been working towards greater accountability within his party. Granger said that since the 2011 Elections Campaign, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has never asked for them to hand over anything pertaining to campaign financing. Further, he stated that while the party would not have a problem

submitting documents they would not be doing it in isolation. “All political parties have to come on board,” Granger emphasised. Corbin who had attended a two-day workshop on Local Government Elections recently hosted by the Canadian High Commission and the Guyana Press Association stated that they have had several discussions with the Organization of American States (OAS) within the region on the issue. He told Kaieteur News that from the point of view of GECOM it would be useful if they could be able to pursue and set up the framework, thus allowing them to monitor that aspect. “The feedback we get from those discussions in the region gives us the indication that the legislators (in Guyana) at the moment seem not to have a general disposition towards supporting legislation that would place limits around contributions.” In 2009, the OAS had announced that it had started work on comprehensive political party and campaign

finance reform in the region towards instituting a key recommendation of its electoral observation missions. It was noted that the main purpose of the project initiative was to contribute to increased transparency, to strengthen the integrity of political party and electoral finance in the Caribbean and to establish sustainable mechanisms for the regulation of political party and campaign financing in the region. The OAS had stated that it intended to make the working paper public and that the paper would call for specific requirements for political party registration, increased disclosure and strengthened enforcement. The paper and the model legislation will be presented and discussed in a series of meetings throughout the Caribbean scheduled during this year, the OAS added. However Corbin said that at an OAS conference last year, the general disposition was not there for support of the legislation.

World’s largest spider spotted in Guyana’s rainforest Arachnophobes may want to steer clear of South American rainforests, where a Harvard University entomologist recently spotted the South American Goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi), the world’s largest spider. Piotr Naskrecki, a photographer and entomologist at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, was trekking through a rainforest in Guyana when he encountered the spider, which is roughly the size of a puppy. According to Guinness World Records, the Goliath birdeater is the largest spider in the world, with a leg span up to 30 centimetres, or the size of a child’s forearm. If the size of this colossal arachnid weren’t enough to spook arachnophobes, the sound it makes should be. “Its feet have hardened tips and claws that produce a very distinct, clicking sound, not unlike a horse’s hooves hitting the ground, but not as loud,” Naskrecki wrote on his blog. Fortunately, the birdeater, which looks like a giant

Guyanese woman killed in New Jersey murder/suicide Belleville, New Jersey (nj.com) — A man and woman are dead after an apparent murdersuicide in Belleville, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Saturday. Police discovered the bodies of John Sykes, 47, and Felicia Hunt, 23, in a home on New Street around 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to the prosecutor’s office. Officers were called to the residence to check on Sykes after he didn’t show up for work. “As the officers peered in a window they observed a male and female lying dead,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The spider’s venomous bite can do a great deal of damage to smaller mammals, but not to humans. The bite, while not dangerous, would be painful. It would be “like driving a nail through your hand,” according to Naskrecki. The spider’s sharp, 2inch-long fangs aren’t its only defence mechanism, however. By rubbing its hind

EPA confirms probe into... (From page 13) says it is seriously contemplating legal action against those involved in the action as it is now doing its own investigation into the issue. The Chinese workers were on Monday caught dumping the waste material aback of the Marriot Hotel construction site by two tourists who had gone for a look at the ongoing construction work. The men proceeded to take video footage and photos of the Chinese nationals pouring out what looked like waste oil into the Atlantic Ocean. The Chinese were at the time dumping the oil right next to the Coast Guard’s quarters which adjoin the Marriott Hotel. Upon noticing the workers in the act, a staffer from the Coast Guard approached the

workers and despite their initial refusal, he was able to stop them from emptying the remaining barrels of waste oil. The visitors had also photographed a bulldozer transporting drums to the waterside, while others stood and lay at the back entrance of the hotel’s construction site. Contact was made with Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn on Monday and he said that he was unaware of the incident and would be liaising with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD). While there has been word about the investigation, none of the relevant agencies to address the oil dumping matter have made public statements.

legs against its abdomen, the birdeater can emit a cloud of barbed hairs into the air. If the hairs get into the eyes, they can remain there for several days and cause itching and irritation. The birdeater can also create a loud hissing sound by rubbing its front legs together to ward off potential enemies, a warning call that sounds “sort of like Velcro pulling apart,” said Naskrecki. Even though this massive spider is named birdeater, it rarely feeds on birds. Because it does most of its hunting at night, it mostly feeds on earthworms, an abundant food source in Guyana’s humid nighttime climate. That doesn’t mean other mammals are safe from the birdeater, however. Naskrecki explained that the birdeaters “will essentially attack anything that they encounter.” According to Live Science, birdeaters are not common spiders. Naskrecki has been studying the tropics in South America for 10 to 15 years, yet he has only encountered the birdeater three times. The last encounter with the birdeater has been fortunate for Naskrecki, who captured the spider and took it back to his lab to study. The spider is currently residing in a museum.

Sykes apparently killed Hunt before taking his own life, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose said. The two lived together at the house and “appeared” to be involved in a relationship, according to the prosecutor’s office. Autopsies were pending and the Essex County Homicide Task Force was investigating. Authorities did not immediately provide additional details. Indications are that the woman is a Guyanese from the West Bank of Demerara.

Shop owner remanded over $2M armed robbery

A 30-year-old shop owner accused of holding a 69-yearold businessman at gunpoint and snatching $2M from him on one of the city’s busiest streets was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Monday. Jimmy Meyers of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court is alleged to have carried out the daring armed robbery last Friday. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant reported that the sexagenarian, Deryck Khan, a businessman of Subryanville, Georgetown, made a withdrawal from Scotiabank on Robb Street, and was about to transact business at a Regent Street store around 14:35 hours last Friday. It is alleged that Meyers confronted Khan with a gun as he exited the vehicle and attempted to snatch his money-bag. A struggle ensued and Meyers discharged a shot before relieving the businessman of his bag. He then escaped with an accomplice on a motorcycle. Inspector Grant explained that acting on information, police ranks went to East Ruimveldt where they arrested Meyers. The accused, according to the Prosecutor, was positively identified as the robber who

had attacked the businessman. Following his not guilty plea, Meyers’ attorney, Gordon Gilhuys, told the Court that ranks arrested him while he was in bed. According to Gilhuys, his client tried to explain to the ranks that he knew nothing of the robbery. Gilhuys said that the 30year-old has three children and operates a shop in East La Ruimveldt. However, Grant informed the Court that the defendant was previously convicted for possession of firearm and ammunition offences. He emphasised that Meyers was positively identified during an identification parade. Grant asked the court to consider the nature, gravity

ACCUSED: Jimmy Meyers and prevalence of the offence, and deny him bail. Notwithstanding the bail application, Meyers was remanded to prison. The case is set to be called on November 3.

Cargo handler critical after struck by “speeding” vehicle A 53-year-old cargo handler is currently critical and nursing injuries about his body at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after he was catapulted off his motorcycle by a speeding vehicle that struck him from behind last Sunday afternoon in the La Parafait Harmonie Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara. According to his wife, Mark Gentle suffered a damaged spine, broken right arm and several bruises about his body from the accident, which subsequently left most of his body immobile. Paula Gentle explained that her husband’s condition has been critical since the mishap, and he “still has not uttered a word and can barely

Injured: Mark Gentle move his head and neck.” Reports indicate that around 18:30 hours, the Laparkan employee was riding home on his “250 Custom” motorcycle, when a speeding vehicle allegedly struck his motorcycle from

behind and “blasted” him off. Gentle’s wife said that he was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by public-spirited citizens in her village, who later informed her that the driver of the vehicle was believed to be “under the influence of alcohol”. She said that her husband was later transferred to GPHC due to the severity of his injuries. “Doctors told me that all I could do now is pray and hope that my husband recovers. They said his condition is very critical and he will be like this for a while.” she related. His wife noted that the matter was reported at La Grange Police Station, and the driver of the vehicle was apprehended.

Runaway schoolgirl still not in parents’ custody A 15-year-old who was reported missing by her parents more than three weeks ago, after she failed to return home from school, is still not in her parents’ custody. Two days after her disappearance, Alicia Johnson, of Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara, allegedly contacted her mother and told her that she was “okay”, “good wherever she is” and “would not be returning home.” Johnson’s mother, Natasha Aaron, said that she received the phone call around 19:30 hours on October 2, from a “Private Number”. “After Alicia told me her intention was to never return home, I start crying and begging her to come back, but

RUNAWAY TEEN: Alicia Johnson she kept telling me that she good wherever she deh and I should not worry about her; then she put down the phone on me. Now I don’t know what could be going on with her,” her mother related. According to her mother,

Johnson has not contacted any family members since her last phone call. Her step-father, Garfield Aaron, said that she was last seen by her teachers and fellow classmates in Dolphin Secondary school’s compound, after classes had dismissed on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 30. He said that Johnson has experienced no form of domestic abuse, and he found it “unreasonable” that she did not want to return home. Johnson’s parents are currently seeking the public’s assistance in locating their daughter. Anyone with information on her whereabouts can contact her parents on the following telephone numbers: – 233-5303, 688-3045 or 615-3397.

Elderly Wismar woman missing Duo charged with gang-raping Relatives of Desiree Monica Fraser, of 66 A Victory Valley Wismar, have been looking for the elderly woman for the past five days, after she left her home unknown to anyone. Mrs. Fraser is 68 years of age, of African descent, and is five feet four inches tall. She was last seen in a pink top and blue skirt. Fraser, who reportedly suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, was last seen in the Coomacka and Yararibo mines area, more than ten miles away from her home. Her daughter Sharon Rogers, is “camping out’ with other relatives, in the vicinity, in the hope of locating her. A relative told this

newspaper that it is not the first time that Mrs. Fraser has disappeared. Earlier this year, she had also gone missing, but only for a day. She was found late the same evening. That time, a resident of Christianburg had contacted the family after seeing their phone numbers on the local television station. “He had detained her by engaging her in conversation, while he called us,” one of the woman’s relatives reported. But this is the first time that Fraser has been missing for such an extended period and seen so far away from home. Persons with information about the whereabouts of Mrs. Fraser are asked to call

Mahdia hotel worker

MISSING: Desiree Monica Fraser Sharon Rogers on 444-3697 or 683- 0109; Shonette Rogers on 645-0793 or 444-7116, or the nearest police station.

Two men accused of gang-raping a 19-year-old hotel worker in Mahdia last month were placed on $100,000 bail each following a court appearance on Monday. The men, aged 19 and 25, were both charged with rape following the recommendations of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). They appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the allegations. The two are set to appear before the same magistrate on November 17. According to previous

reports, the young hotel worker claimed that she was drugged and then raped by the men on September 13, last, at a popular Mahdia hotel and bar. The young woman was hospitalised after the attack. She had alleged that she was drugged while she and her co-workers were celebrating a birthday on the premises. The young woman had fingered the alleged perpetrators as one of the owner’s sons and brother-in-law. The act reportedly occurred in one of the hotel’s rooms where she stayed. The woman, who is a domestic worker, had said that she tried to fight off her attackers but could not manage because she felt weak. She said she was severely bitten by the men. Following the incident, she said she told a co – worker, who took her

to the hospital and the police station. Photos of the rape had circulated in sections of the media. Following displeasure with the work of the ranks at the Mahdia Police Station, the young woman was brought to make a report at the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Headquarters in Georgetown by President of the Women Miners Association, Simona Broomes. Investigations done by the Guyana Human Rights Association also had revealed that the young woman was examined only for physical assault because no rape kit was available. In light of the cries for justice by the 19-year-old and nongovernmental organisations when the men were charged with assault, the DPP had recalled the file from the police pertaining to the case.

GECOM aims at fluent... (From page 6) incorrect declarations, the possible repercussive effects could be hideous and too tragic to even contemplate.” “Certainly we could have accepted telephone calls throughout the night of November 28th, relaying the results, as some people had suggested… we would have made the necessary calculations based on the information received from the presiding officers by phone and…the results are declared on the 29th, and then those who are saying that we took too long would be very happy. Apart from being in contravention of the laws associated with the declaration of results, that would have been a recipe for disaster,” Surujbally stated. The procedure for the receipt and compilation of the results of the elections prescribes that when the individual statements of polls are received at the GECOM Command Centre from their respective polling stations, they have to be checked for accuracy. Then, the results delineated on the statements of poll have to be double checked with those in the possession of the respective returning officers, thus ensuring that they collectively represent the totality of the results of the balloting which were conducted at the various polling stations within the particular districts. “If an error is detected, the process for that district cannot and will not go forward,” Dr. Surujbally emphasised.

Sweden gets two new sightings, as hunt for undersea intruder goes on

Swedish Navy fast-attack crafts are seen in the Stockholm Archipelago October 19 2014, searching for what the military says is a foreign threat in the waters. (Reuters) - Sweden’s military is working on two new observations that could be evidence of suspected “foreign underwater activity” near the country’s capital, a senior naval officer said on Tuesday. Swedish forces have been scouring the sea off Stockholm since Friday, after what the military called three credible reports of activity by foreign submarines or divers using an underwater vehicle. The vessels were unidentified, but during the 1980s the Swedish navy from time to time hunted suspected Soviet submarines in its waters. “Today, I can also report that there have been two further observations which were made by members of the public that are interesting enough to require further follow-up work,” Admiral Anders Grenstad told

reporters. He would not give further details about what kind of new sightings had been made, but said they were being assessed and were not yet considered as credible as the three made earlier. Grenstad said the operation was aimed at gathering intelligence, not military action, and could continue for some time. “I want to stress again that this is not a U-boat hunting operation which has the aim of bringing down an opponent with military might,” he said. He also said Sweden had no information as to which country might be behind the suspected intrusion into Swedish waters. But during the 1980s and early ’90s, Sweden’s defence forces regularly played cat and mouse with suspected Soviet submarines in its territorial

waters. Some of the incidents were later reclassified as likely to have been false alarms. In recent months, Swedish jets have been scrambled to meet Russian planes crossing into the country’s air space, a pattern repeated in the Baltics where NATO has responded. Finland has complained that Russia has violated its air space and that the Russian navy interfered with the operations of a state environmental research vessel in international waters in August and September. The incidents come as tension between Russian and the West is rising in the region over the conflict in Ukraine. In a joint press conference on Tuesday with the leader of Estonia, Sweden’s prime minister said his country would increase spending on defence.

NATO intercepts Russian jets over Baltic Sea HELSINKI (AP) — NATO scrambled fighter jets twice in two days to intercept Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea, it said Tuesday amid reports that Russian military activity in the region is increasing. Lt. Col. Robert Gericke said the Russian aircraft were flying in international airspace and had not violated the territory of alliance members. Two Canadian F-18 Hornet jets were scrambled from the Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania on Monday to intercept a Russian Ilyushin-20 surveillance aircraft, which they shadowed for some 15 minutes, NATO said. “Once identification was successful, the intercept

mission was completed and the two Hornets returned to their base,” a NATO statement said. Earlier, the Latvian military tweeted that NATO F-16 jets were dispatched on Tuesday to intercept a Russian Ilyushin20 surveillance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. Gericke confirmed that NATO jets had also intercepted a Russian aircraft that day, but could not immediately provide more details. NATO, which has 16 fighter jets in the region monitoring Baltic airspace, said it regularly launches jets to identify “unknown or potentially hostile aircraft” in the proximity of national airspace. There were two similar incidents in the region

on Oct. 7 and Sept. 11, but on neither occasion did the Russian aircraft constitute a threat to NATO forces, the alliance said. In the past five days, the Swedish Navy has been combing the Stockholm archipelago for signs of a foreign submarine that officials suspect entered its territorial waters illegally. It hasn’t officially linked Russia to the suspected intrusion. The Finnish military says that Russian military aircraft have violated the small Nordic country’s airspace five times this year, and the Environment Institute said Russian military ships had twice intercepted one of its research vessels in international waters.

CARICOM Chairman defends ban on nationals from Ebola affected West African countries ST. JOHN’S, Antigua CMC – Prime Minister Gaston Browne Monday defended the decision by a number of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries to impose a travel ban on nationals from three West African countries because of the deadly Ebola virus that has killed nearly 5,000 people. Browne, who is also the CARICOM chairman, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) just before boarding a plane for London that “the restriction is necessary”. “Even if we end up with a single case of Ebola, it has serious consequences for our tourism product. Most of our countries are dependent on tourism and I can assure you that if any of our respective countries has a single case of Ebola then you can see potentially maybe a 30 to 50

Gaston Browne per cent drop in tourism. That means immense hardship for our people.” Several Caribbean countries including Antigua & Barbuda, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia and Suriname have implemented restrictions on passengers travelling from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone as a result of the virus

for which there is no known cure. Browne said CARICOM states need to go the extra mile to ensure that the virus is proactively managed as it has the potential to have grave consequences compared to other developed countries like the United States. “They (the United States) have welldiversified economy that is not overly dependent on any on single sector and in our case you know the gravity of the problem would be far worse, the consequences will be far worse so we’ll have to go the extra mile,” The CARICOM chairman acknowledged that the Caribbean is at a higher risk given the presence of the virus in the United States, but he says his country and others are implementing other measures to detect and, if necessary, treat the virus.

Trinidad ‘won’t borrow money’ even if oil prices fall PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (Trinidad Express) - The Government will not resort to borrowing money if the budgeted price of oil falls below US$80, Finance Minister Larry Howai has said. The minister was responding to e-mailed questions from the Express last week as crude oil prices continued a sudden plunge on global markets that has caused governments around the world to brace for potential budget shortfalls. For instance, Venezuela’s 2015 budget will be based on a target oil price of US$60 perpbarrel that country’s government announced on Friday night. Oil has dropped more than 25 per cent since June on strong s u p p l y, s i g n s o f w e a k demand growth and indications that key oil producers, particularly Saudi Arabia, have a limited appetite to cut output to bolster prices. United States’ November crude settled at U S $ 8 2 . 7 5 o n F r i d a y. Responding to how the oil price plunge could affect Trinidad and Tobago’s budget, Howai stated oil and gas prices “are important variables for our budget, but context is also important”. But what if oil slips below US$80, which is what the 2014-2015 budget is based on? Howai said regarding measures to address a price below US$80, based on analysis, “we do not see this

Larry Howai as likely to be a prolonged situation and, in any event, unless the price of gas and related derivative commodities also show a significant decline, it is

unlikely that we would have to do anything”. The 2014-2015 budget was also based on a gas price of US$2.75 per million British thermal units. “But we also consider the worst case and, in such a situation, the short answer is that we would not borrow to make up the shortfall,” Howai stated. “We have already begun an exercise to address expenditure and that process will be accelerated if prices do fall below US$80 for an extended period and if gas prices also follow suit.” Howai acknowledged “we continue to follow closely the price of oil but note that any response by us will depend on two factors—firstly, whether the reduction in price is for an extended period and, secondly, what is happening with gas prices”.

World must stop Ebola in West Africa or face ‘pandemic’ - Cuba’s Castro HAVANA (Reuters) - The world must confront Ebola in West Africa to prevent what could become one of the worst pandemics in human history, Cuban President Raul Castro said. “I am convinced that if this threat is not stopped in West Africa with an immediate international response ... it could become one of the gravest pandemics in human history,” Castro told a summit of the leftist ALBA bloc of Latin American and Caribbean countries in Havana. Cuba is sending 461 doctors and nurses to West Africa, the largest medical contingent of any single country to fight the worst Ebola outbreak on record. The virus has killed more than 4,500 people since March, mostly in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Among the dead are 239 healthcare workers, the World Health Organization said. Castro reiterated Cuba’s

willingness to set aside 55 years of hostility with the United States to stand together against Ebola. Washington is sending up to 4,000 military engineers, medical personnel and other troops to West Africa. “Cuba is willing to work side-by-side with all countries, including the United States,” said Castro, who took over as president from his older brother Fidel Castro in 2008. The United States has welcomed Cuba’s aid, with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry highlighting the size of Cuba’s contribution in relation to its population of 11 million. With 83,000 doctors, Cuba says it has 7.2 physicians per 1,000 people, one of the highest rates in the world, although many are sent overseas in exchange for cash or goods such as Venezuelan oil. Although there have been

no Ebola cases reported in Latin America or the Caribbean, it has reached the United States and Spain. Labeling the world’s response to date “insufficient,” the ALBA countries promised to reinforce detection and prevention, and share training and education for public health workers. They said at the end of their meeting that they might send more doctors and nurses to West Africa, though none made a specific commitment. They also praised Cuba for its record of medical diplomacy. Havana has dispatched medical brigades to disaster sites around the world since the 1959 revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power. The ALBA summit came together quickly after a Liberian man, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, died from the virus in Dallas on Oct. 8.

More fiscal adjustment needed Barbados Nation - Even after introducing a fiscal adjustment programme that included the departure of 3,000 of its workers this year, Government will have to make an additional $174.6 million adjustment between now and the end of March. Central Bank Governor Dr DeLisle Worrell said this was necessary as the Freundel Stuart administration tried to reach its targeted deficit of more than half billion dollars, the equivalent of 6.6 per cent of GDP, by the end of its current financial year. Worrell outlined the requirements yesterday afternoon when the bank released its third quarter review of the Barbados economy, in which the Governor reported no economic growth between

Dr DeLisle Worrell January and September, but predicted a return to growth next year (two per cent) and 2016 (2.5 per cent). The veteran economist also said Government had reached “the most important” objective of its fiscal

measures – “to reduce the demand for foreign exchange in line with supply”. He said in the first five months of its 2014-2015 financial year (April to September) the deficit was reduced by $77 million (0.9 per cent). However, while figures from the Central Bank and Ministry of Finance projected that the measures already in place would further reduce it by one per cent, Worrell cited the need for “further revenue enhancement and expenditure adjustment” of $174.6 million or two per cent of GDP. On the positive side, Worrell said the tourism sector had begun to turn around and the island continued to hold its own in the international business sector.

Bayern and Shakhtar in seventh heaven Five-time European champions Bayern Munich took a huge step towards qualification for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a remarkable 7-1 rout of Roma at a stunned Stadio Olimpico. Dutch playmaker Arjen Robben opened the scoring with a sublime curled effort past Morgan De Sanctis. Further strikes from Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski, a second from Robben and a Thomas Muller penalty left Garcia’s men with a mountain to climb. The first 45 minutes must have struck a chord with Garcia, whose Lille side suffered a 5-0 first-half rout

by Bayern during a 6-1 group stage defeat in 2012 in Munich when the German side went on to lift the trophy. By the final whistle, Roma were sorely reminded of their 7-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2007. Gervinho found the net when he headed past Neuer from close range after Radja Nainggolan’s inch-perfect delivery from the left following Juan Iturbe’s searing run. Franck Ribery replaced Lewandowski in the 68th minute and ten minutes later struck Bayern’s sixth. Xherdan Shaqiri rubbed salt into Roma’s wounds when he grabbed Bayern’s

seventh after being allowed to collect a rebound from a De Sanctis spill to fire into the roof of the net ten minutes from time. Earlier, Manchester City were architects of their own downfall as they surrendered a two-goal lead provided by Sergio Aguero and James Milner in Moscow to draw 2-2, thanks to Seydou Doumbia and a late Bibars Natcho penalty. Barcelona warmed up for their Clasico clash with Real Madrid on Saturday in fine fashion as goals from Neymar, Lionel Messi and Sandro Ramirez handed them a 3-1 win over Ajax in Group F. Luis Enrique then withdrew Neymar, Messi and Andres Iniesta in the second half to keep them fresh for the weekend. Ajax briefly threatened a comeback when Anwar El Ghazi halved the deficit two minutes from time, but Sandro drove home a third in stoppage time to secure a deserved victory for the Catalans. Edinson Cavani handed Paris Saint-Germain a dramatic late 1-0 victory in Cyprus as APOEL Nicosia were denied a hard-earned point. The Uruguayan frontman struck in instinctive style with just three minutes remaining to break APOEL hearts on a night when the home side enjoyed the clearer opportunities with defender David Luiz having earlier cleared a Tiago Gomes header off the line. But ultimately Cavani’s intervention was enough to keep PSG, who beat Barcelona in the last round of matches, at the top of Group F. Luiz Adriano became only the second player after Lionel Messi to score five goals in a Champions League match as Shakhtar Donetsk thrashed BATE Borisov 7-0 at the Borisov Arena. exposed their haphazard hosts. Brazilian Luiz Adriano’s 12-minute hat-trick was also the third-fastest in the competition’s history and he moved out on his own as the first man to ever score four goals in the first 45 minutes of a Champions League match. With the win comfortably secured, Shakhtar boss Mircea Lucescu shuffled his pack at the break and it disrupted the free-flowing scoring of his side, but Luiz Adriano was still not done and added a late penalty to take his already bountiful tally to five. In the other game in Group H, goals from Hector Herrera and Ricardo Quaresma sandwiched a Fernandez Guillermo effort as leaders Porto beatAthletic Bilbao 2-1. Drogba in goalscoring Champions League return Didier Drogba scored his first Chelsea goal since his decisive strike in the 2012 Champions League final as the Premier League leaders thrashed Maribor 6-0 at Stamford Bridge to strengthen their position at the top of Group G. Drogba, whose final kick of his first spell was the last penalty in the shootout defeat of Bayern Munich which saw Chelsea win the European Cup, replaced Loic Remy after 16 minutes and converted a spotkick seven minutes later. The Côte d’Ivoire striker’s 158th Chelsea goal made it 2-0 after

Remy’s opening strike and captain John Terry swiftly added a third after sprinting the length of the field. Agim Ibraimi missed a penalty after Mitja Viler’s own goal had made it four, before Eden Hazard converted a second Chelsea spot-kick 13 minutes from time and added a last-minute sixth with his second of the night. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored a 92nd-minute penalty to earn Schalke a 4-3 win after they had surrendered a two-goal lead at home to ten-man Sporting Lisbon. A grandstand second half which saw two Adrien Silva goals, the first a penalty, bring Sporting level from 3-1 down had looked set to deny Roberto Di Matteo victory in his first Champions League game in charge of the Royal Blues. But Choupo-Moting saved his side’s blushes at the death after Jonathan Silva had been penalised for handball to send the Germans second in Group G. Schalke had earlier recovered from conceding the opener to Nani to draw level through Chinedu Obasi before halftime, Mauricio seeing red in the build-up to the equaliser. Goals early in the second half from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Benedikt Howedes set the hosts on what looked set to be a routine win, but they did things the hard way before finally squeezing over the line. Pistorius starts five-year WTA Finals: Caroline Wozniacki term for killing his girlfriend earns win over Maria Sharapova

Reuters - Olympic and Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius started his five-year jail sentence yesterday for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, marking the end of a trial that has gripped South Africa and millions around the world. His uncle, Arnold Pistorius, indicated he would not appeal. As judge Thokozile Masipa gave her decision on the 27-year-old’s culpable homicide conviction, Pistorius, whose downfall has been likened to that of American football star O.J. Simpson, stood resolutely in the dock. His only reaction was to wipe his eyes before two police officers led him to the holding cells beneath the High Court in the heart of the South African capital. Ninety minutes later, an armored police vehicle carrying Pistorius - still dressed in dark suit, white shirt and black tie - left the building through a throng of reporters toward Pretoria Central Prison, where he is expected to serve his time. Once the execution site for opponents of South Africa’s former white-minority government, the jail is now home to the country’s most hardened criminals, including the man known as “Prime Evil”, apartheid death squad leader Eugene de Kock. Prisons officials said Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated when he was a baby, would be housed in a separate and secure hospital wing of the massive complex. “ONE LAW FOR ALL” In delivering her decision, 67-year-old Masipa stressed the difficulty of arriving at a decision that was “fair and

The 27-year-old was swarmed by armed police before learning his fate just to society and to the accused”. She also rebuffed suggestions that Pistorius - a wealthy and influential white man - might be able to secure preferential justice despite the “equality before law” guarantee enshrined in the post-apartheid 1996 constitution. “It would be a sad day for this country if an impression were created that there is one law for the poor and disadvantaged, and one law for the rich and famous,” she said. Steenkamp, a 29year-old law graduate and model, died almost instantly on Valentine’s Day last year when Pistorius shot her through a locked toilet door at his luxury Pretoria home. Prosecutors pushed for a murder conviction, but the

athlete maintained he fired in the mistaken belief an intruder was hiding behind the door, a defense that struck home in a country with one of the world’s highest rates of violent crime. The ruling African National Congress’ Women’s League, which is at the forefront of political efforts to tackle violence against South African women, yesterday called for an appeal by the state against the Sept. 12 culpable homicide conviction. But Steenkamp’s family said it was satisfied with the sentence. “Justice was served,” family lawyer Dup De Bruyn told reporters outside the court. The judge had given “the right sentence”, he said.

Low-scoring 2nd “Test” ends in draw

Matara, Sri Lanka - The West Indies A bowlers forced another Sri Lanka A collapse on the fourth and final day of the 2nd “Test” but a result wasn’t possible for either team as the match ended in a draw. Sri Lanka A started the final day in an uncertain position on 63-4, having a first innings lead of 15 runs. However, on another rain-hit day in which only 25 overs were possible, the West Indies A bowlers almost dismissed the hosts in their second innings. Jermaine Blackwood finished the pick of the bowlers with 3-44. Shannon Gabriel and Miguel Cummins

contest provided plenty of drama and twists. Sharapova came back from 3-0 down in the first set to level and broke her rival in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead. But, serving for the first set, Sharapova opened up with the first of two double faults in the game as Wozniacki levelled and held her own serve to go 6-5 in front. Two more double faults from the Russian in her next game gave Wozniacki a set point - only for Sharapova to find the line with a powerful forehand before the set went to a tie-break.

Wozniacki trailed 4-2 but recovered to lead 6-4 and took the set when Sharapova served her ninth double fault. A problem with the lights in the second set caused problems for Wozniacki but she manoeuvred her way to a 5-4 lead only to be broken when serving for the match. Another tie-break was needed and this time Sharapova came out on top to level. In the deciding set, eighth seed Wozniacki’s perseverance and pressure finally helped her pull clear for a hard-earned a hardfought win over the world number two. (BBCsport)

At this y e a r ’s championship which took place in Jamaica, the WIFBSC Executive Committee following its statutory meeting had given the Trinidad Rifle Association (TRA) until the end of August 2014 to confirm their hosting of the event. Antigua & Barbuda was the a l t e r n a t e c o u n t r y. T h e TRA responded in late September informing that they would be unable to host the event. The time left for Antigua to get prepared w o u l d n o t h ave been adequate and since the body had already decided that the West Indies team would compete at the Wo r l d Long Range Championships and Palma Match scheduled for Camp Perry in Ohio, USA in August, 2015, attention would be focused on the team to that championship. Sampson informed that Captain of the Palma Team, Major John Nelson of Jamaica has indicated that plans are moving at encouraging pace. “The WI Palma Team Captain, Major John Nelson has informed that plans are moving apace and many of the team members have made themselves available for

INTERPOL/FIFA holds Partnership meeting in Jamaica Kingston, Jamaica - As part of the CONCACAF/ INTERPOL/FIFA training, education and prevention initiative, the first-ever Partnership Development Meeting in the Caribbean took place on Saturday at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) offices. The gathering brought together all key stakeholders in the fight against match-fixing with the objective of assisting in the development of a coordinated national approach that protects the integrity of sport. Regional and international cooperation is viewed as necessary for

safeguarding the integrity of the game by establishing the structures for investigating potential threats. Representatives of F I FA ; INTERPOL; CONCACAF; the Caribbean Football Union; the JFF; the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC); the Jamaica Constabulary Force (Police Force); Ministry of Justice; and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions were all in attendance and discussed the new roadmap for a coordinated strategy to create a jointaction plan. Afterwards, in a

released joint statement, a clear message was communicated: “We all have committed today to work together in order to further protect the integrity of sports against the global threat of match manipulation.” The meeting was the first step in the process with additional ones to follow in the near future. The JFF recently appointed Robert FinziSmith as Single Point Contact of Integrity and will, in coordination with CONCACAF, implement a new prevention and education program for all players and referees.

Hopkinson Mining supports Slingerz FC Hopkinson Mining recently handed over a quantity of balls and other training gear to the Slingerz Football Club (FC) as the team prepares for which ever end of the year football tournament that comes. The club, which is just two years old, has so far built an impressive track record of its own with the biggest accomplishment to date being the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Banks Beer Cup which it won last year. It was the team’s first outing at the three year-old tournament and upon accepting the donation from the mining company, Javed Ali, Slingerz FC President expressed delight in receiving support from corporate Guyana. According to Ali, it’s his team’s aim to be Guyana’s top football club and as such, support from the corporate community is important which makes Hopkinson Mining’s contribution very important.

U.S. top Haiti, advance to CWC semi-finals

Washington, D.C. - The United States booked a spot in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship semi-finals by winning Group A behind an emphatic 6-0 victory over Haiti on Monday night. The result also enabled Trinidad & Tobago, a 2-1 winner over Guatemala in the first game of the doubleheader at RFK Stadium, to secure a final-four berth. The U.S. will play the winners of yesterday’s Group B match between Mexico and Jamaica, in Chester, Pennsylvania, on October 24. Abby Wambach scored twice to increase her worldrecord to 173 international goals. Carli Lloyd, Meghan Klingenberg, Christen Press and Morgan Brian also tallied for the Americans (3-0-0, 9 points). Haiti was eliminated from the competition with a 1-0-2 record. The USA outscored their opposition in this competition, 12-0, while recording their 27th shutout out of 32 all-time CWC matches. “It’s not pretty, but we’re getting the job done,” Wambach said. “It’s tough to score goals when you have 10 people in the box.”

Abby Wambach Still, the U.S. did as they came out attacking from the opening whistle and rarely allowed the Haitians to cross midfield. That pressure paid off in the ninth minute. Meghan Klingenberg sent in a long cross toward Wambach that goalkeeper Geralda Saintilus punched out softly. The ball went directly to an awaiting Carli Lloyd, who halfvolleyed an effort home for her 53rd international goal and a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Press delivered a cross into the box that Haitian defender Roselord Borgella tried to head away. Wambach was

there to head home from close range for a 2-0 advantage. Klingenberg extended the margin to 3-0 in the 57th minute as she drilled in a 25yard laser off a half-volley for her first international tally in 19 appearances after a poor clearance. Wambach bagged her brace barely after the hour, volleying a six-yarder for a four-goal advantage. She has 14 CWC goals, moving her past Mia Hamm into second place, trailing only Michelle Akers (17). Press added a goal in the 65th minute and she set up one for Morgan’s with eight minutes left in normal time. (CONCACAF)

Matthias gone, replaced by GNRA’s leading marksmen show Normalisation Committee ominous form ahead of year-end C/ships

By Rawle Welch Stating clearly that they are not here to reprimand anyone or suspend Guyana from the FIFA / CONCACAF family, Head of Member Organisations for FIFA Premo Cavaro, however, stressed that they will show no understanding to anyone who attempts to fight the new process. Cavaro, who along with CONCACAF Legal Affairs Director Marco Leal arrived in Guyana to spearhead the process to appoint a Normalisation Committee to run the operations of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) met with members of the media at the Pegasus Hotel last evening to apprise them of the decisions taken by the world and regional bodies following the abandonment of two previous Congresses that plunged the governance of the country’s football into dispute. The two esteemed members announced to the media that GFF President Christopher Matthias has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect and a five-member Normalisation Committee will be in place in three days with a mandate given by FIFA / CONCACAF to reorganize the football landscape by September 2015. According to Cavaro, among the Committee’s duties are to formulate new constitutions for the GFF and its affiliates and to run the day to day operations of the local governing body including interfacing with stakeholders and attending FIFA and CONC A C A F Meetings. The FIFA official said that while the current constitution is not bad it needs to be improved and this is one area that the Committee will be looking at. He added that there will be big and deep changes in the manner in which football is governed in Guyana, informing that the installation of the Committee will pave the way for a new GFF that will advance the development of the game here. Cavaro was quick to remind all present that the move by F I FA / CONCACAF was not to sanction anyone, but because a vacuum was created that stymied the work of the GFF and even attempts made by the major governing bodies proved futile. Pointing to the composition of the GFF,

Christopher Matthias

Cavaro said it was too small, especially since there is usually a lot to do and this problem will also be addressed by the Committee and changes will be recommended. The Head of Associations stated that further disputes will not be accepted anymore as to who are eligible to represent the various regional associations. He reminded all that FIFA / CONCACAF still has a lot of faith in Guyana’s football since the ongoing resentment among members of the fraternity and the ignoring of FIFA / CONCACAF’s previous recommendations could have easily resulted in suspension rather than the installation of a Normalisation Committee. “We believe that the installation of a Normalisation Committee is not a suspension, Guyana is still a part of the FIFA / CONCACAF family and this is a show of faith.” He said that Matthias’ exit should not be considered a removal as such, but an attempt to develop and move Guyana’s football forward and break the stalemate created by the absence of full support from the GFF Executive Congress. Quizzed on the composition of the Committee, Cavaro said they have been recommended by people from right here and who are far removed from football, but committed to Guyana. He stated that it is their intention to meet with everyone, the taxi drivers, GFF, persons in the streets among others to get a good feeling as to what is really needed to propel the development of the sport here. “Other affiliates to FIFA

/ CONCACAF and who are just as small as or even smaller that Guyana are facing similar problems , but they are performing so we have to fix this problem,” Cavaro pointed out. He disclosed that experts will be coming sometime soon to meet stakeholders within the sport and those outside to discuss with them what are some of the issues affecting the development of Guyana’s football and what recommendations could be made to rectify those problems. Leal, who is visiting Guyana for the sixth time including five this year, all aimed at resolving the ongoing disputes within the GFF responding to why the Committee has been given such a long time said that the task that needs to be accomplished requires a long period. “Because of the things like the constitutions, the Committee members who will be relatively new to football management will first need to acquaint themselves with football related matters, travel to meet with the associations, before actually beginning the task of reorganising the governance structure, all of which takes time,” Leal reminded. An attempt to solicit a r e s p o n s e f r o m Cavaro pertaining to whether the new Committee will revisit certain decisions taken by the previous ExCo; he said they will be advised to stay clear of such issues for fear of not being dragged into what transpired before. No member of the Normalisation Committee will be eligible to run for office at the next Congress.

Ahead of the Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) year end shoot which is set for November 2nd, 8th and 9th, the local marksmen have been showing ominous form. At last Sunday’s recorded shoot held at the Timehri Rifle and Pistol Ranges, Ransford Goodluck won at the 300, 500 and 900 yards ranges to emerge as the top shot. National Captain Mahendra Persaud placed second with reigning local and Caribbean champion Lennox Braithwaite coming in third. It was not all easy sailing for the competitors as the winds were switching from left to right and caught many of the shooters in the aim. There was bright sunlight, excellent for shooting. Shooters used the shoot as practice in preparation for the national yearend Championship which will be held on November 2, 8 and 9. Those using the activity as practice were Richard and Dylan Fields, Peter Persaud and Colin Loncke. Another recorded shoot at the 300, 600 and 900 Yards Ranges is set for this Sunday at 10:00hrs. Meanwhile, The GNRA has started preparations for

Ransford Goodluck

their 150th Anniversary which will be held in 2017. Letters have been sent out to the major international shooting clubs in Canada, England, Australia and many

of the English clubs have already responded in the affirmative. Following are the scores and placing for last weekend’s Recorded Shoot:

WICB statement following meeting

Bridgetown, Barbados – The West Indies Cricket Board regrets, and is deeply embarrassed by the premature and unfortunate end to the recent tour of India. The WICB once again expresses to the BCCI and all stakeholders - especially the cricket loving public of the West Indies and India sorrow for the events leading up to this development. The Board of Directors of the WICB, today

(Tuesday) met to formally embark on the process of a careful and systematic review of relevant events and have, initially, decided as follows: 1. to establish a Task Force, comprising critical stakeholders, to review the premature end of the tour to India. The Task Force will meet with all parties, including WIPA and the players, before reporting its findings to the Board of

Directors. 2. to request a meeting with the BCCI. 3. to schedule an urgent debriefing with the West Indies Team Management Unit. 4. to assure Cricket South Africa that it will use its best endeavours to ensure a successful tour of South Africa as scheduled. The WICB is mindful of the related decisions of the BCCI Working Committee.

In light of the longstanding good relationship between WICB and BCCI, which goes back decades and has produced numerous mutual benefits, the WICB looks forward to meeting with the BCCI to discuss these decisions which can have serious implications for West Indies cricket. WICB believes that a way can be found to repair the damage that has been caused and to ensure that

similar events do not recur, with the focus being on the betterment of West Indies and world cricket. The WICB thanks all stakeholders, particularly the ICC, BCCI, their broadcasters and sponsors for their patience and understanding in this matter and looks forward to the continuation of a strong relationship between our Boards. The WICB is committed to acting as expeditiously as the situation allows, and will

provide further information to the public as soon as it is appropriate to do so. (WICB)

BCCI suspends all bilateral tours to West Indies The BCCI working committee has decided to suspend all bilateral tours to West Indies, in response to the visitors pulling out of their India tour. India were expected to play five series against West Indies in the next eight years, including four visits to the Caribbean. While a BCCI release made no specific mention of any claim for damages, the Indian board will also initiate legal proceedings against the West Indies Cricket Board. The board statement also did not mention any action against West Indies players who participate in the IPL. The players were unlikely to be suspended from participation in the league, with franchises backing them. The working committee meeting in Hyderabad was convened to discuss the aftermath of West Indies’ pullout. The members unanimously felt that strong action needed to be taken against WICB in order to prevent recurrence of such an event. A working committee member revealed that the BCCI’s legal cell said that the bilateral agreement “has been

breached” and the BCCI has “every right to claim damages”. This, according to him, made the decision easy for the committee. Another member revealed that the claim amount and the jurisdiction will be decided by the legal cell. It is understood that during the informal discussions during the build-up to the meeting in Hyderabad, some members had suggested that the BCCI suspend ties with WICB for a specific period. However, the committee was convinced that the abrupt manner in which the tour was called off deserved the harshest possible punishment. As an insider revealed “the manner in which the WICB put its hands up” during the whole standoff with its players which led to the cancellation of the tour midway made the BCCI believe that the bilateral ties should be suspended “indefinitely”. “At the moment, it looks unlikely that the bilateral series would resume anytime soon. It will be up to the legal cell now to see if and when a settlement takes place,” revealed an insider. (ESPNcricinfo)

World No 1 Lee fails dope test Malaysian badminton star Lee Chong Wei faces a twoyear ban and could miss the 2016 Rio Olympics after failing a dope test. The Badminton Association of Malaysia confirmed yesterday - Lee’s 32nd birthday - that the world No 1 failed the test conducted at the World Championships in Copenhagen in August, Malaysia-based China Press, a Chinese-language newspaper, reported. Lee is well known to Chinese fans for his competitive clashes with China’s Lin Dan. Badminton’s best-known rivalry has often ended with Lin emerging victorious with the equally talented Lee left with the silver medal. The 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and 2012 London Olympics both saw nail-biting confrontations between the pair in the men’s single final. They met again in the semifinal at this year’s Asian Games in Incheon. On all three occasions a ruthless Lin proved unbeatable. Lee awaits the result of the “B” sample but if found guilty could face a long ban but with the right of appeal. He withdrew from the Denmark and French Opens after Incheon citing health reasons and a hectic schedule.

In 2015 more schools will be added to the pilot programme in Region Four and the programme will include both male and female student-athletes as the GABF seeks to make schools’ basketball home and away programme an everpresent feature of the annual school calendar. “Students who are not playing will have the opportunity to view the home games at their school. The GABF will support these exchange games annually and will keep expanding the programme across the country.
