Educate. Inspire. . Empower

Letter from the President Dear Friends, This past year held special significance for me as my class celebrated the 50th anniversary of our graduation from Gwynedd Mercy. Reuniting with classmates during Reunion Weekend, we walked through the familiar red and gold corridors, and felt embraced by the heartfelt cheers of students, dedicated faculty, and hardworking staff— inaugurating a new Golden Jubilee tradition that moved me deeply. In that moment, I was reminded of the profound gift of a Mercy education, bestowed upon us by the Sisters of Mercy who established our school 163 years ago and built our current facility nearly 70 years ago. It also underscored the vital importance of our ongoing stewardship to ensure Gwynedd Mercy continues to thrive and offer transformative opportunities for young women today and future generations. The following report highlights our exciting new building project, a testament to our commitment to provide a state-of-the-art learning environment and fulfill the promise of our strategic plan, “She is the Future.” The report also showcases significant milestones achieved by our community throughout the 2022-23 academic year and celebrates the unwavering and generous support of our donors. The essence of Gwynedd Mercy is the result of collective efforts, made possible by you—our dedicated and generous school community—and the indomitable spirit of the Sisters of Mercy, whose legacy of faithful service and courageous acts of Mercy continues to guide and inspire us. Together, let us ensure that our school remains a place where all our Monarchs will have the opportunity to soar, explore their potential, and make a lasting impact on the world. With heartfelt gratitude,

Denise Corkery Marbach ’72 President

SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH Much like our mascot, the Monarch, undergoes a transformative journey to take flight, Gwynedd Mercy has embarked on an extraordinary endeavor—“A Place to Soar,” a $7 million campaign to fund the construction of a new dining and community commons, academic seminar room, and counseling center to benefit all students.

See a Monarch’s Virtual View of the New Wing.

“A PLACE TO SOAR” marks the School’s largest campaign and our first major capital initiative in over two decades to address vital facility needs. The campaign also pays homage to the enduring legacy of our founders, the Sisters of Mercy, who have been the School’s stewards since 1861. Thanks to generous and early contributions from trustees, alumnae, parents, and foundations, the campaign has already secured more than $5 million in commitments, including a $1 million lead gift from the Connelly Foundation, enabling the official groundbreaking ceremony to take place on September 10, 2023. “We are deeply grateful to the Connelly Foundation and to the nearly forty donors who have silently propelled us forward,” expressed President Denise Marbach ’72. The project, spanning 36,000 square feet encompassing the renovation of the School’s 1955 cafeteria and the addition of a new wing, is now set for completion in January 2025. The project also includes a special tribute to the Sisters of Mercy—the Mercy Legacy Walk that will feature engraved bricks for each sister who has served or graduated from the Academy, preserving their enduring legacy. This building project is the thoughtful product of our five-year strategic plan, “She is the Future,” which aims to educate, inspire, and empower women leaders. Since 2019, the plan has notably transformed the student experience with a dynamic academic schedule, expanded counseling services and staff, impactful leadership, wellness, and community initiatives, and increased financial aid support, all of which resulted in our largest student body ever, 440 students, maximizing Gwynedd’s enrollment. “Now, we must modernize our nearly 70-year-old cafeteria and provide the community, academic, and counseling space that Gwynedd Mercy and our girls need,” says Campaign Chair Teresa Rodgers ’91, a parent of a senior and junior. “Through this campaign, we can fulfill the promise of ‘She is the Future’ today and ensure Mercy education for generations to come—our girls and the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy deserve our support.”

GENERATIONS UNITE FOR

Two distinguished benefactors, Rosemary Murphy Gulati ’57 and Frances Reiffel Lockwood ’65, each committed transformative gifts of $500,000 in support of A Place to Soar. Additionally, former Alumnae Association Presidents Anna Skoien Lall ’02 and Bethanne Mascio Connolly ’03 made meaningful contributions of their own. Colleen Belz Frascatore ’89, the director of advancement, engaged each in a conversation, uncovering the common threads that bind their passion for this historic campaign. Rosemary Murphy Gulati ’57 (left) and Frances Reiffel Lockwood ’65

Looking back, how has your Mercy education made a difference in your life? Rosemary: Having gone to an all-girls school, I felt I could do anything. I felt empowered. It put me in a good place to lead a productive and a happy life. Fran: The emphasis on ethics and values shaped who I am today, and the impact of single-sex education is immeasurable. You can only imagine the impact your friendships will have on you in the future. Anna: Mercy education helped me to find and use my voice. It also normalized service as an everyday part of my life. Bethanne: I also found my voice with the Sisters of Mercy. What’s your take on the “She is the Future” changes that are making our new wing essential, like our dynamic schedule, collaborative classes, holistic Wellness Curriculum, and more dedicated time for clubs, homework, and interactions? Rosemary: Giving students more choices, freedom, and engagement is a good thing. Fran: Young people today have a much harder road, especially with social media, so a focus on wellness is important. I am also impressed that Gwynedd is helping the girls acquire financial literacy and leadership skills through its Wellness Curriculum. Both will be invaluable tools for life.

She is the Future.

Anna: I like Gwynedd’s ongoing evolution, openness to change, and focus on innovative ways to address modern girls’ needs. Gwynedd’s urgent need for expanded community, academic, and counseling space is the driving force behind our new wing. What drove your gift to ‘A Place to Soar’?” Rosemary: The fact that this project is a real need for my alma mater. I hope it makes all the difference for Mercy girls’ education. Fran: I want today’s girls to have the same joy and confidence in themselves that I felt at Gwynedd, and I think the new wing will help foster this for them.

8 A PLACE TO SOAR

Anna: Being a scholarship recipient and knowing how much it changed the course of my life, I have always felt a need to pay it back. I also want my two daughters to soar here!

Our mascot, the monarch butterfly, is also a source of inspiration for “A Place to Soar.” Was there a mascot in the 50s and 60s, and can you relate to being a Monarch now?

Bethanne: The Sisters of Mercy have been moving and shaking since our school’s founding in 1861 to ensure girls have the opportunity to lead wherever life takes them. Now it’s up to us.

Rosemary: I am not sure we had a mascot.

We plan to honor the Sisters of Mercy in our new wing with the Mercy Legacy Walk. Were there any particular Sisters who impacted you?

What are your hopes for your daughters, or should I say future Monarchs, with the new wing in progress?

Rosemary: Sister Joanna was fun. Sister Mary Jean was kind and accepting. I also remember Sister Mary Joan. A Sister of Mercy also encouraged me to take the entrance exam while I was attending Gwynedd Mercy Day Camp, and I received a partial scholarship to attend. My sister received one too. Fran: Overall, the Sisters genuinely cared, and not just about your grades. They always approached us in a caring and positive way. Bethanne: I was really impacted by Sister Susan Walsh.

Fran: There was nothing like that… However, it is amazing how much a girl transforms when attending Gwynedd Mercy, so the monarch is fitting.

Anna: Having a bigger, dedicated space to better support programs that promote the holistic health and wellbeing of girls will be incredible. Bethanne: My hope is that the experiences provided in the new wing will challenge her, help her find her path, and inspire her to care for others and make a meaningful impact in the world. Your daughters at the groundbreaking reminded me that this campaign is planting seeds for the future. Speaking of seeds, Gwynedd’s new Mission to Table garden is educating girls and tackling local food insecurity. Fran, as a keen gardener, any planting suggestions? Fran: Rhubarb. It says, “spring is here,” and gives you a taste of what’s to come. Rosemary, as a member of the Campaign Committee, is there anything more you’d like to share? Rosemary: I am sure every class had a good experience while attending Gwynedd Mercy. So, if you’re in a position to give, please give back. This is an opportunity and, if you can do it, we would appreciate it. How about our Alumnae Presidents, any last words? Bethanne: I would challenge my fellow alumnae to think about what they’re most grateful for and to consider a gift that is commensurate with that gratitude. Anna: “Come girls, your school now calls for you.” We need you. The Alma Mater has been telling us this all along.

RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITIES Discover all the ways you can be a part of this historic project and help Gwynedd Mercy and our girls soar to great heights.

MERCY LEGACY WALK SPONSORSHIPS Founded in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland, the Sisters of Mercy, also known as “the walking sisters,” extended their mission beyond convent walls to aid the marginalized, including the poor, sick, and uneducated. Their exceptional acts of mercy ignited their rapid growth and global outreach. Since establishing Gwynedd Mercy in 1861, the Sisters of Mercy have been the School’s steadfast caretakers and supporters. To honor their legacy, we introduce the Mercy Legacy Walk as part of our new wing. This pathway will guide visitors to the Community Commons, illuminate the Core Values of Mercy Education, and celebrate each Sister of Mercy who has served or graduated from our school with an engraved brick to secure her enduring legacy. Donors may become named sponsors of the Walk at different gift levels, and donations may be made immediately or pledged over one to five years. Contributions from matching gifts also count towards these sponsorship levels. Near the Mercy Legacy Walk, a plaque will be placed to recognize sponsors based on their level of contribution. Donors can also make a gift in honor of one or more Sisters or other special individuals. Upon request, we will send a card to the honoree or their family to inform them of the tribute.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

SHINING BRIGHT AS AN ENTREPRENEUR With accolades such as “Most Admired CEO,” inclusion in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s prestigious “40 Under 40” list, and her notable achievement as a 2022 Titan 100, Gwynedd Mercy’s 2023 Commencement Speaker Sunny Timbo White ‘01 is well-acquainted with success. Nevertheless, what truly distinguishes her as a genuine leader is her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact and guiding others on their own paths to success. Sunny is the founder and CEO of the womenowned healthcare marketing agency Xavier Creative House and the point person for building brands in pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical devices industries. “I love being in healthcare because my work makes a tangible difference for patients and their families.” With expertise in finance, healthcare, communications, non-profits, and start-ups, Sunny has an eclectic tool kit that benefits a wide range of clients like Humana, Highmark, Independence Blue Cross, Johnson & Johnson, and Merck, and ultimately their patients. Additionally, her entrepreneurial spirit helped her be ahead of the curve. For instance, long before remote work became common, Sunny realized that, with digital and cloud-based platforms, she could recruit brilliant creatives wherever they were located. As a result, from 2016 to 2018, sales at her firm tripled. From 2019 to 2020, her staff doubled; then doubled again from 2020 to 2021. Sunny also actively supports the growth of up-and-coming marketing leaders so they can make an impact in healthcare as well, and is the host of a podcast, Evocative Xchange, which highlights marketers, entrepreneurs and creatives implementing bold solutions. Sunny received her undergraduate degree in Business, magna cum laude, from St. Michael’s College, and earned two MBAs from Saint Joseph’s University’s Haub School of Business in the areas of International Business and Pharmaceutical & Healthcare Marketing.

The weeklong professional development program focused on invention education to help educators learn how to empower students to be creative problem solvers through the process of inventing and building prototypes to solve real-world problems. Stay tuned to see how Mr. Berger brings his learnings to Gwynedd students.

On a recent trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, GMAHS Director of Strategic Initiatives Sherry Mischler met with Christine Kerlin Nasserghodsi ’91, co-founder and Managing Partner of Mirai Partners, a learning innovations group based in Dubai.

Every Gwynedd Mercy senior is matched with an alumna mentor through the Alumnae Engagement and Leadership Departments’

MENTORING PROGRAM.

Discover its impact by watching a video featuring Piper Marion ’23 and her alumna mentor, Beth Merlini Vitucci, D.O. ’01.

EDUCATE. INSPIRE. EMPOWER.

1861 SOCIETY GWYNEDD MERCY ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL

Honor Roll of Donors The generosity of loyal donors provides the resources needed for Gwynedd to educate, inspire, and empower generations of women leaders rooted in Mercy values to achieve personal, collegiate, and professional success and to make a difference in the world. Gwynedd’s Honor Roll of Donors recognizes all who contributed to the school between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023. These alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and organizations who supported Gwynedd during its last fiscal year helped to make “She is the Future” strategic initiatives possible and strengthened the school’s academic program and overall experience for all our students. “No work of charity can be more productive of good to society than the careful instruction of women.”

Honoring the year Gwynedd Mercy was founded, the 1861 Society recognizes individuals whose annual gifts totaling $1,000 or more ensure the School’s ongoing excellence. Membership is extended at the following levels: Innovator ($5,000 or more), Leader ($1,861-$4,999), Associate ($1,000-$1,860).
