Five CVS drive thru locations in Gwinnett to offer COVID-19 tests By Curt Yeomans curt.yeomans@ gwinnettdailypost.com

Twenty-three CVS locations, including five in Gwinnett County, are now serving as COVID-19 testing sites, Gov. Brian Kemp announced Thursday. It is part of CVS’ efforts to have 1,000 stores across the nation set up as test sites by the end of May. CVS already has nearly 350 locations in Georgia, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. “Our friends in the private sector continue to play a critical role in our efforts to ramp up COVID-19 testing and ensure access for all Georgians,” Kemp said. “CVS Health has been a tremendous partner in this

fight, and we are grateful for their continued commitment to Georgia as they expand testing in communities throughout our state.” The stores will use selfswab tests and CVS’ goal is process as many as 1.5 million tests each month. Patient sign ups for tests begin Friday at CVS.com, and people who receive the test must meet criteria designated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as age guidelines, according to the governor’s office. Stores in Buford, Dacula, Lawrenceville, Norcross and Suwanee are among the locations that are offering the testing. There is also another nearby CVS location in Cumming, over in Forsyth County, that will offer testing as well. Those stores are located at: ♦ CVS Pharmacy, 1950

Once the test is done, the sample will be sent to a third-party lab, and officials expect the results to be available in about three days. “While the large-scale test sites we’ve been op-

Pakistan plane crash black box found after 97 killed

Musician Fred Yonnet connects during COVID-19

Rescue crews have retrieved the data recorder from the Pakistan International Airlines plane that crashed on Friday, killing at least 97 passengers and crew members. The recorder, or “black box,” was found at the crash site in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Saturday, according to PIA spokesman Abdullah Khan. Two passengers survived but 97 bodies have been recovered from the scene, Pakistan Armed Forces spokesman Major General Babar Iftikhar said earlier on Saturday. The jet went down in a residential area, but the plane did not hit any buildingsand no one on the ground appears to have been killed, PIA CEO Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik added. Iftikhar said army troops, rangers and social welfare organizations have been assisting in the search. He added: “97 bodies recovered. 2 passengers survived. 25 affected houses cleared, their residents accommodated at various places with the assistance of Civil Administration.”

COVID-19 fractured Fred Yonnet’s musical life. The acclaimed harmonica player’s band, Frederic Yonnet and The Band with No Name, could not play together. Their gigs were canceled. There was nowhere to practice. As Yonnet quickly found out, face masks and harmonicas do not live in harmony. “We are a live band,” Yonnet said. “Timing is extremely important so we can be in sync. If you try and communicate with somebody through any of those online platforms, by the time it takes the sound to travel back and forth, (the delay) it’s too great for us.” Inspired by the television series “Dexter,” Yonnet came up with a creative solution to unite his band in one room while practicing social distancing. “I came up with this idea of stapling big sheets of plastic to the ceiling to separate the band members from each other, then cutting some clear shower curtains to create eye contact by creating these giant plastic face masks,” he said. The five band members met to rehearse on a Sunday afternoon in late March. They wore facemasks and entered their individual plastic chambers. The neighbors began to gather outside, spaced apart on their porches and lawn chairs. After the positive response, the band began to expand from its Capitol Hill confines. What began as an organic gathering drawn together by live music moved to social media via live streams on Facebook and Instagram.

A national security law is coming to Hong Kong Beijing’s plan to introduce a hugely controversial national security law in Hong Kong has sparked widespread fears over its potential impact on the city’s much cherished freedoms. Residents of the semi-autonomous city only need to look across the border at mainland China to get a glimpse of how “national security” — broadly and vaguely defined — can be used as a convenient pretext for the political prosecution of dissidents, activists, human rights lawyers and journalists. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, for example, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power.” Prior to his arrest, Liu helped draft a manifesto calling for democracy and political reform in China.

US cleared way for new arms sale to UAE, despite evidence it violated the last one The Trump administration has cleared the United Arab Emirates of wrongdoing and approved a possible sale of thousands of armored vehicles to the Gulf state, U.S. government officials told CNN, despite evidence that the country made unauthorized transfers of American military hardware to armed groups in Yemen. Yemen is embroiled in a civil war that has pitted a coalition backed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE — both key U.S. allies — against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, and the presence of American-made weaponry has only helped to fuel the fighting. A CNN investigation in February last year revealed that both American allies had given US-made equipment to al Qaeda-linked fighters, hardline Salafi militias, and other fighting factions in Yemen, despite their agreements with Washington. — From wire reports

Air travel has its busiest days in months heading into Memorial Day weekend Americans took a small and cautious step to return to the skies this weekend, the start of the traditional summer travel season. The TSA reported Saturday that it screened more passengers at U.S. airports on Thursday and Friday than at any time in the last two months. It’s only a modest improvement, but crucial for a turnaround for the battered U.S. travel industry. The number of travelers passing through airport screening hit 318,449 Thursday and 348,673 Friday, compared to more than 2.6 million passengers on each of the same days a year ago. It was first time since March 23 that the TSA screened more than 300,000 people, and the first time since March 25 that the percentage of those screenings exceeded 10% of year-earlier figures. The lowest point occurred April 14 when fewer than 88,000 passing through screening, only 4% of the year-earlier level. Even with the modest gains of recent days, the percentage of people screened since the start of April amounts to only 6% of those screened a year ago. The plunge in air travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recommendation that Americans avoid all non-essential travel for much of the spring has caused a financial disaster for numerous companies.

during the War of 1812 led to the writing of the ”StarSpangled Banner.” The visit will come in spite of a plea for Trump to rethink his visit from Baltimore Mayor Bernard “Jack” Young, who has said it will send the wrong message at a time when he is asking the city’s residents not to travel. Baltimore is one of the areas of concern for public health officials worried about the spread of coronavirus. “I’m asking the president to rethink his trip. It sends a bad, bad message to the cit-

izens of Baltimore because I’m asking them to stay home and only come out for essential reasons,” Young told CNN’s John King on Friday. “I just want him to set the example for the rest of the country and not do this trip, because it’s not essential.” In the same interview on Friday, Young said that he is certain that the President could find another, safer way to honor the country’s fallen soldiers. “This has nothing to do with him personally. My city is seeing an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases,

and we don’t want to spread it,” Young, a Democrat, said. He also said that the White House did not give the mayor’s office a heads-up to prepare for the visit and that it was the second time the White House has done that. Deere responded to Young’s criticism by stating that “the brave men and women who have preserved our freedoms for generations did not stay home and the president will not either as he honors their sacrifice by visiting such a historic landmark in our Nation’s history.”

‘AKA Jane Roe’ is about more than just ‘deathbed confession’ “AKA Jane Roe” is constructed like a mystery, building toward a previously unseen interview with the late Norma McCorvey — made famous by the abortion-rights case Roe v. Wade — that she describes as her “deathbed confession.” But the documentary is most intriguing as a profile of a woman who spent time as a lightning rod for both sides of the most divisive of issues. The big headline out of “AKA Jane Roe” is McCorvey’s assertion that she was paid by anti-abortion activists to switch her position on reproductive rights in the mid-1990s. “It was all an act,” she says in the documentary, of her much-ballyhooed about-face — which had been attributed to her becoming a devout Christian — proclaiming herself to be a “good actress.”

Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga release ‘Rain on Me’ Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga have released their catchy new single, “Rain on Me.” The collaboration was born after the two artists began friends, which Gaga admits was due to Grande reaching out to her. “She was so persistent,” Gaga told Zane Lowe of Apple Beats 1. “She would try over and over again to be friends with me. And I was too ashamed to hang out with her, because I didn’t want to project all of this negativity onto something that was healing and so beautiful.” — From wire reports

Meet Biscuits and Gravy, the kitten born with two faces By Alaa Elassar CNN

An Oregon family got quite the surprise when one of their farm cats gave birth to a litter of six kittens, including one twice as cute as the rest. Say hello to Biscuits and Gravy, the two-faced kitten. The adorable kitty was born on Wednesday with two noses, four eyes and two tiny mouths. Mama cat, Keenly, and his five siblings are all healthy.

MUST READ “My wife went out to look at them and found five normal ones and one with two faces,” owner BJ King told CNN. “We were pretty shocked. It was so odd looking, we didn’t even really think much of it until later in the day when we realized this was actually pretty rare.” Two-faced cats are known as “Janus” cats, named after the Roman god Janus, who had two faces.

Although these rare kittens don’t usually survive for more than one day, a two-faced cat named Frank and Louie defied the odds and lived for 15 years, even appearing in the Guinness World Records book in 2006. To increase Biscuits and Gravy’s likelihood of survival, the King family has to take over much of Keenly’s motherly duties. That includes regular feedings and keeping him warm. “It’s like having a new-

born baby,” King said. “We set the alarm for every two hours to feed him during the night and feed him every two hours, 24 hours a day. We are very careful to keep him warm at all times and he snuggles inside my wife’s shirt for most of the day.” Biscuits and Gravy only has one brain stem, but can eat, suck and meow using both of his mouths. For now, the little one is doing very well, according to the family’s veterinarian. Biscuits and Gravy with one of his siblings.

Most Lake Lanier day parks — except Buford Dam Park — reopen By Curt Yeomans curt.yeomans@gwinnettdailypost.com

Gwinnett residents will be able to use most of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-run day parks located on Lake Lanier this weekend — except one located in Gwinnett County. The corps announced nearly all day parks on the lake will reopen this weekend for the Memorial Day holiday. The only day park that is not openin,g however, is Buford Dam Park, which is located near its namesake dam on the Gwinnett tip of the lake. “Here is the post you all have been waiting for,” corps officials said in an announcement on Facebook. “Beginning May 23, 2020 all Corps of Engineers operated Day S Use Parks, with the exception of Buford Dam Park, will be open for public access. In addition, all restrooms at currently accessible areas will be open.” While day parks will be open this weekend, corps officials several amenities are remaining closed because of the COVID-19

novel coronavirus pandemic. Those amenities include beaches, shelters, playgrounds and campgrounds. The Lanier Project Management Office is remaining closed to the public as well, although staff will at the facility and available to answer phone calls. Corps officials S said visitors are urged to avoid crowded parks and facilities, and to practice social distancing when visiting day parks on the lake and upper Chattahoochee River. “The health and safety of USACE personnel, contractors, volunteers and the visiting public are our highest priority,” corps officials said in a statement. “We continue monitoring national health and safety data, we appreciate the public’s understanding as we move ahead with our phased re-openings. Please continue maintaining safe social distancing with other guests, and consider bringing hand sanitizer for additional safety.” Anyone who has questions about the day parks or other facilities at Lake Lanier can call 770-945-9531.

Lois Lane Allen Lois Lane Allen was the epitome of a woman who loved her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her community, and her church. She was a lifelong educator who taught public elementary, middle, and high school over a 45 year period, only taking time away to spend with her young children. Lois passed away on Sunday, May 17, in her home in Lawrenceville where she and her husband lived independently. She was 87 years old. Lois graduated from Southwest Missouri State College (now Missouri State University) in 1955. She had a job lined up to teach in California but met Woodrow Allen on March 6, 1955, and fell in love at first sight. She and Woody were married three months later on June 25 in Springfield, Missouri. Woody was in the Army stationed at Fort Smith, Arkansas, where they started their life together. Lois taught over the years in Arkansas, Missouri, California, and Georgia. She was Gwinnett County Middle School Teacher of the Year for the 1992-93 school year. Lois earned her Master of Education from the University of Georgia in 1986. She retired from the Gwinnett County School System in 2000 at age 67. Lois and Woody were married for 64 years, 10 months, 3 weeks, and 1 day. Woody has this memorized in his head and in his heart. They have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Kimberley Smith is a Project Manager for Perficient in Business Analytics and Big Data. Keith Allen retired as a Vice President from Coca-Cola and currently manages his own company principally investing in start-up/early stage businesses. Jennifer

Cragin is a school teacher at Crews Middle School in Gwinnett County teaching 6th Grade Social Studies. Lois and Woody decided to move from California back to Woody’s home of Atlanta, Georgia, when pregnant with their first child in 1958. They’ve made their home in Georgia ever since. After moving to Gwinnett County in 1978, they became totally committed to supporting their church home at First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville. Lois taught Sunday school, and she and Woody have been leaders in their adult Sunday school, The Joy Class. She served several times as a lay person delegate to the North Georgia United Methodist Conference. In addition to being a church volunteer, Lois also devoted much of her time after retirement to volunteering for Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Authority as the Chairperson. Under her leadership, Gwinnett Parks won the 2014 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. In 2018, Lois was honored with the Gwinnett County Shining Star Award for her lifetime of outstanding service to the improvement of the quality of life and communities within Gwinnett County. She graciously accepted the award in honor of all of the award recipients. Lois has a dedicated bench at Tribble Mill Park and a new dedicated pavilion at Alexander Park. Another award presented to Lois for her community efforts was the Philadelphia Winn Chapter NSDAR of Lawrenceville 2012 Community Service Award for her stewardship of the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation System. Starting with a handful of properties in 1987, the county can now boast of approximately 47 properties thanks, in part, to her diligence. Lois was born January 9, 1933, in Pittsburg, Kansas. Her parents were Floyd and Bertha Holt. Lois’s father was a Methodist minister which l dh b i l di

North’s Carter adds to Clemson’s football haul By Will Hammock

will.hammock@gwinnettdailypost.com

Clemson continued its raid of top Gwinnett football talent with a commitment Tuesday night from North Gwinnett’s Barrett Carter, one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects in the Class of 2021. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Carter is ranked as the No. 56 player nationally in the 247Sports.com Composite Rankings, which also have him as the No. 4 outside linebacker nationally and the No. 6 player in Georgia. He garnered close to 60 offers already and narrowed his list down to a top four of Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia and Auburn. He chose the Tigers and defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who recruited Carter heavily along with fellow defensive coaches Mickey Conn (a South Gwinnett grad and former Grayson coach), Mike Reed and Todd Bates. “I could visit Clemson a million times and before each visit I’ll have butterflies,” Carter said. “I really thought long and hard about that. That feeling can’t go unnoticed. Any school that makes me feel that, I can’t ignore it. … I just like the people there. They always say the people there, I fit them football-wise and off the field. I see that when I’m there. I feel like the coaches want the best for you on and off the field.” Clemson now has three Gwinnett commitments, all four-star recruits, in its 2021 class — Carter, North cornerback Jordan Hancock and Grayson running back Phil Mafah. Hancock is ranked as the No. 8 player in Georgia by 247Sports.com and Mafah is No. 17. The Tigers have done well recruiting Gwinnett in recent seasons, particularly on defense. The current roster includes South Gwinnett grad Justin Mascoll and Archer defensive backs Andrew Booth and Jalyn Phillips. “They want me to show a little bit of the Isaiah Simmons position, play that Cheetah, the position they call Cheetah,” Carter said. “I’m really excited about that. I’m ready to build my own legacy when I get there.” Carter had 84 tackles and 10 sacks last season as a junior, helping North to the Class AAAAAAA semifinals. He was an all-state selection by the Georgia Sports Writers Association and the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association, as well as the Touchdown Club of Gwinnett’s Inside Linebacker of the Year. An early commitment wasn’t the plan initially for Carter, but he changed his mind in the last couple of months. “To be honest, I didn’t really expect to commit this early,” he said. “But this quarantine and this virus really made me think. I had a lot of time to think about it, and I was ready to do it now.”

GHSA to allow conditioning at schools beginning June 8 By Will Hammock will.hammock@ gwinnettdailypost.com

Georgia’s teenage athletes can resume conditioning at their high schools beginning June 8, the Georgia High School Association’s Board of Trustees confirmed in a Thursday meeting. The GHSA released its guidance for a return to conditioning on June 8 with a number of recommendations and restrictions, which allow individual school systems to be more restrictive for summer sessions if they deem it necessary. GHSA member schools are not permitted to be less restrictive than the GHSA guidelines for coronavirus prevention. “As the data related to COVID-19 continues to improve, restrictions may be reduced after input from our health care professionals and guidance from our Governor,” GHSA executive director Robin Hines told member schools in an announcement. “Please make every effort to follow the recommendations and restrictions included in

As you return to conditioning, keep in mind that the majority of your athletes have deconditioned the past two months and need to work into what would be normal for this time of year. Reduce the work and gradually increase the workouts with time.” Hines originally discussed a date of June 1 for conditioning sessions, but the trustees decided it was too quick to turn around for larger school systems. “I don’t have any problems

with the plan itself,” said Curt Miller of Henry County Schools. “It’s the June 1 date. If we could just push that back a week, it would make things easier on the larger systems.” Steven Craft of Fulton County Schools, Jasper Jewell of Atlanta Public Schools and others agreed that a June 8 date worked better than June 1. “I’m fine with the June 1 date, but if moving it to June 8 will help our larger systems get things in place and make it safer for our kids and coaches, then I have no problem with

that,” GHSA Board of Trustees president Glenn White said. The organization also outlined specific recommendations and restrictions for its member schools, including the following: ♦ All summer work is voluntary ♦ Workouts are conditioning only, no balls or sport specific equipment ♦ Member schools should prepare an Infectious Disease Prevention Plan prior to staff and athletes returning to conditioning ♦ It is recommended that staff and athletes are screened prior to each workout ♦ Signage should be posted on site with the following questions — Do you or have you had a fever in the last week? Have you been diagnosed with COVID-19? Have you been in contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19? Have you traveled to a hot spot for COVID-19? ♦ Groups of 20, including coaches, for workouts per sport at any given time at the campus/facility

Parkview senior Nieva Gaither’s decorated high school soccer career added another honor, this one from the United Soccer Coaches organization. Gaither, the Daily Post’s player of the year in 2018 and 2019, was Gwinnett’s only United Soccer Coaches AllAmerican and one of five Georgia girls to earn the distinction this season. She also was selected as the Georgia player of the year and was an All-Atlantic Region pick for

the 2020 season cut short by the coronavirus. Four Gwinnett girls players joined Gaither on the allregion team — North Gwinnett’s Bree Barley, Peachtree Ridge’s Maddy Bondon, Parkview’s Kendra Davis and Dacula’s Michaela English. Those players also earned all-state honors. The all-state list also included two Gwinnett goalkeepers, Kelly Hall of North Gwinnett and Maggie Leland of Buford. Only one Gwinnett boys player, Peachtree Ridge’s David Aguilar, earned United Soccer Coaches honors. He was named to the all-region and all-state teams.

Atlanta United players making strides in training Voluntary workouts ‘going really well’ By Jack Leo Staff Correspondent

Following a tedious, seven-week break from soccer, Atlanta United reopened practice facilities for individual, voluntary workouts earlier this month. Since then, players have attempted to make up for the preparation time they missed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The work has been going on since May 6, when the training site opened again. “It’s going really well,” rookie defender Brooks Lennon said Wednesday. “This week is all based around in-

dividual and specific to my position training.” Veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan also believes that the training at the team facilities has been a major improvement to his workouts at home. “It certainly is more soccer specific. When you’re at the facility, you have mannequins, you have poles and footwork drills,” Guzan said. “You’re able to work soccer specific muscles. Just getting back into the habit of catching and doing some goalkeeping stuff is certainly a benefit of being able to be out there as opposed to being in your backyard or in a gym.”

With European leagues like the Bundesliga and the English Premier League already resuming gameplay, similar plans for the MLS may have players practicing together and playing by the end of June. One such plan is for all 26 teams in the league to live in and play the entire season in Orlando, Fla. While it may seem for fans that the season couldn’t be coming fast enough, some players like Lennon and Guzan also have concerns about how soon the league wants games to be played.

Trump’s war on Voice of America

Donald Trump has a way of making easy things difficult and difficult matters impossible. That is a good way to explain what is going on behind the scenes right now at the Voice of America, or VOA. Trump recently declared war on the VOA, the government-run broadcaster that delivers news in more than 40 languages to an estimated 280 million people around the globe. And that declaration has exploded into a battle royal over Trump’s nominee to become CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees VOA, Radio Free Europe and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting. Unfortunately for this columnist, the two people at the center of this tempest are both friends. I write at great risk to my personal equilibrium but for all the right reasons. I believe in both of them; I’ve written columns in praise of each on other matters. Besides, I’m a middle child. The head of the VOA, Amanda Bennett, happens to be a hero of mine. Fifteen years ago, when she was editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, she was the only editor in the United States who had the guts to publish the infamous “Danish cartoons” in solidarity with the Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, and a dozen cartoonists who had received death threats for their satirical images of the Prophet Mohammed. I wrote a column at the time praising Bennett’s courage and integrity. My opinion of her has not changed, especially as she (and

her broadcasting agency) have lately ful to Pack. And while Pack may be been in the president’s crosshairs. a conservative, he’s still a consumTrump has accused the VOA of makmate professional. undermining the public’s confidence in the Senate.” You can almost hear the laughter in Washington when Menendez expresses concerns about someone else’s ethical improprieties. In Pack’s case, my bet is that none will be found. According to various insiders and a non-profit attorney who has experience in such things, it is both common and legal for non-profits to funnel funds to be used for other purposes, such as the making of a documentary, as long as the recipient of the diverted funds can demonstrate they were used as intended. While Bennett may sincerely fear changes at VOA that Pack might make, there’s no basis to presume he isn’t equally committed to the mission of informing the broader world with respect for journalistic norms. Moreover, it would be illegal for him to alter its mission, which was established as independent and beyond the reach of meddlesome politicians. As usual, if Trump had kept his thoughts to himself — left VOA alone and allowed Pack to speak for himself — the Agency for Global Media might have a good man at the helm. Most important, the VOA’s Bennett could continue without distraction the serious work of informing the larger world and spreading the example of freedom. IN BRIEF Parkview’s Livingston to swim for Georgia Tech Sarah Livingston, a rising senior at Parkview, has committed to the Georgia Tech women’s swimming program. Livingston, who trains at SwimAtlanta, was third at the state high school meet in the 100 backstroke, as well as fourth in the 100 butterfly, last season as a junior.

Archer’s Hines commits to Faulkner Archer senior C.J. Hines committed Thursday to the Faulkner University (Ala.) men’s basketball program. The 6-foot guard earned first-team allcounty honors from the Gwinnett Tipoff Club as a senior, and helped the Tigers to the state playoffs.

Ford drivers aim to end the Coca-Cola 600 jinx By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service

Around the turn of the century, Ford drivers — and, specifically, Roush Fenway Racing drivers — owned the Coca-Cola 600. Jeff Burton won the marquee NASCAR Cup Series event in 1999. Matt Kenseth followed in 2000. Burton won again in 2001, and NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin added the capper to a four-race winning streak in the 600 in 2002. Since then, however, no Ford driver has visited Victory Lane in NASCAR’s longest race. It’s not that the Fords have been shut out at Charlotte. Matt Kenseth (2011), Brad Keselowski (2013) and Joey Logano (2015) all won the fall 500-miler before Charlotte Motor Speedway introduced its Roval for the Playoff race in 2018. But victory in the Coca-Cola 600 (6 p.m. Sunday on FOX, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) has been mystifyingly elusive. “I don’t know the reasons why,” Logano said during a Zoom video conference with reporters on Friday morning. “I can think of quite a few 600s, at least the 22 (Team Penske Ford), which is what I can control, has been very close to winning. I think I’ve got a few

seconds and thirds there (second last year, third in 2011) and have yet to break through. “As a Coca-Cola driver, I know how big of a deal it is to win that thing and feel the pressure to do it. I want to get it done. I’ve been, like I said, close. There are different things every time, and it takes the whole package to make it happen. The driver has got to be on his game. The pit crew’s got to be on it. The car’s got to be good and things (have) got to fall your way. So I guess, in recent years, it hasn’t for the Ford guys, but I wouldn’t bet money against us this week.” One of the foremost obstacles in Logano’s way is defending race winner Martin Truex Jr., who has three victories in the last six oval races at Charlotte. That trio of races includes Truex’s masterful performance from 2016, when the driver of the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota (then driving the No. 78 for Furniture Row Racing) led a record 588 of 600 miles to secure his first win in the Crown Jewel race. Though Truex lost crew chief Cole Pearn to retirement after the 2019 season, he’s no less confident with his new pit boss, Aussie James Small. “Absolutely, no question,” Truex said in a

Thursday video conference. “I think James has come in and done a wonderful job. I feel like we really picked up where we left off last year, aside from some issues here and there. I feel really good about our group — we’re strong. James has done a really nice job. “Maybe our cars are not quite as good compared to the competition as they were in the past two years, but again, I feel like we’re right there, and James is doing an awesome job. We’ve been consistently scoring more points than our teammates, except for at the end of the race, so we’re trying to figure that out. Feel like he’s done all the right things, and we continue to get better each week.”

Briscoe brimming with confidence after Darlington Chase Briscoe said it best after climbing from his car at Darlington Raceway on Thursday. “This is the biggest day of my life after the toughest day of my life,” said Briscoe, who learned that wife Marissa had lost the baby the couple was expecting two days before claiming the most dramatic victory of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career.

UNITED “As players, we want to get back on the field in a safe way,” Guzan said. “Not only from the virus, but it means being fit and healthy enough to play games and trying to rush people onto the field isn’t going to do anybody any favors because the end result won’t be to the quality that we want as players and that fans want as well. You’re also putting guys at a higher risk of injury.” Another strange aspect of the MLS’ plans to resume play is not allowing spectators inside the stadiums for matches. “We’re lucky in Atlanta to have the support, atmosphere, and energy that is created in our stadium,” Guzan said. “To miss out on that factor is certainly disappointing, but the safety of everybody involved in a game day operation has to be the main priority.” With all of this in mind, players like Guzan and Lennon can’t wait to hit the field again. “It’s good that we’re doing the individual training right now because it’s keeping us fit and sharp in preparation for whatever comes,” Lennon said. “Whenever the decision to start the season is made by the league, I think we are going to be one

The Rhodes College (Tenn.) football program earned a commitment Friday night from Evan Byrd, a 2020 Greater Atlanta Christian graduate. Byrd was a first-team, All-Region 7-AAA selection at defensive back last season. He also was an honorable mention allcounty selection by the Touchdown Club of Gwinnett.

Gordon commits to Gordon State Duluth senior Trent Gordon committed Tuesday to the Gordon State College men’s basketball program. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds as a senior for the Wildcats.

Westmont signs Grayson’s Peden The Westmont College (Calif.) women’s swimming program announced the signing of Grayson senior Rachel Peden this week. Peden was a four-year varsity swimmer and state qualifier in the 50 and 100 freestyle races, as well as the 100 backstroke. She was the Rams’ High Point Swimmer Award winner as a junior and a senior. She trains with the Gwinnett Aquatics Swim Club. Westmont’s swim team is entering its second season — it placing 22nd earlier this year at NAIA nationals. “I am thrilled that Rachel will be joining the class of 2024,” Westmont coach Jill Jones Lin said in a release. “Rachel is going to help us tremendously in the sprint events and relays, not to mention her sweet spirit and determination. I can’t wait to start working with her.”

Jailah Clark-Jones, a rising senior at Collins Hill, announced her commitment Friday night to the University of North Carolina-Greensboro women’s basketball program. The 5-foot-9 combo guard helped the Eagles to a state runner-up finish as a junior.

The new ‘drive-thru’

Farmers markets in Gwinnett get creative to thrive during the pandemic By Curt Yeomans curt.yeomans@ gwinnettdailypost.com

Things are not business as usual at local farmers markets, and the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic is to blame. In Suwanee, the booths are spread far apart to encourage social distancing and reduce the chances that crowds of people will gather in a single spot. In Snellville, the market is being done with a contactless drive-thru format. Over in Lilburn, shoppers have to place their orders online a few days before picking it up. “The customers enjoy it because the guy who planted it is the guy who picked it and the guy who sold it so there was less people handling the items that they were purchasing, so it cuts out a lot of extra human touches to the items that are available at the market,” Suwanee Events and Outreach Manager Amy Doherty said of the benefit of a farmers market format in the age of COVID-19. The changes at farmers markets around Gwinnett are just one way life has been upended and forced to change because of the pandemic. But, organizers also see them as a valuable asset in an age where runs of grocery stores have left shelves empty. They serve as another place to get food. “The good thing is it’s giving another option for people to get food,” Doherty said. “It’s also giving people the option to support a local grower. It’s locally harvested and locally produced so it kind of helps keep our economy going.”

cery store, from produce and honey to beef and pork. Doherty said the city already had a monthly winter farmers market scheduled for the week many businesses and offices began to shut down in March. “We did not cancel it because it gave people an option to get food, and the farmers market always has meat and farm fresh eggs, and honey and some fresh baked goods and then we have vendors that sell other things,” Doherty said. “It’s all of these consumable goods.” As the city was preparing to switch to its summer farmers market, officials A more spread out approached the vendors market in Suwanee and asked about increasing The Suwanee Farmers Mar- spacing between booths. ket has many of the things The idea was to put more a person could get at a gro- than 10 feet of space between the booths, which

normally would have been located side-by-side. Doherty said they ultimately put about 15 to 20 feet of space between the booths. “We were lining the vendors up, so we would have a booth, then skipping two parking places and then adding another booth, so the market went from being 22 parking space, to literally being spread out (from the outer part of the town green) all the way down to our fountain area where we could allow that good 20 feet between each booth space so that the farmers not only were spaced out for their own safety, but it also allowed customers a chance to kind of line up and not have to crowd each other while waiting to purchase items.” The city also started its weekly summer farmers market, which normally would have started this month, earlier to accommodate a need for food in the community. “After we got to the end of March, we decided to offer the farmers a chance to come weekly because food was always considered an essential item so we knew that we were OK to have that market,” Doherty said. Many farmers at the market do wear gloves and

Some vendors do take pre-orders as well so shoppers can order in advance and then just show up to pick up their groceries and leave. There is also less touching of the goods encouraged as well. “(Vendors) ask the customers to point to what they want,” Doherty said. “It

used to be that you picked up stuff and kind of checked it out. Now there’s just less people touching it.” And just as produce vendors can tout less human touches on their goods, Doherty said the meat vendor at the Suwanee market offers a similar benefit. “It was a farmer who went to a processor who got the meat in an environment that’s inspected, and he’s the same farmer who brought it back to sell it here,” Doherty said. Suwanee’s market takes place 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at the Suwanee Town Center green.

Drive thru shopping in Snellville Snellville was recently highlighted in a Georgia

Grown video for its approach to running a farmers market. The market is set up to reduce contact between shoppers and vendors as much as possible, while still making sure residents have access to fresh produce and other goods. They just have to stay in their car the entire time. “We have every vendor, of course, wearing a mask and gloves,” Snellville City Councilwoman Gretchen Schulz said in the video. “We have (shoppers) coming through with their trunk up so the vendor can just put the products right in the trunk and then as they exit the market, they can stop and close their trunk so there is no contact.” See MARKETS, C3

school which is probably how I knew who they were. I was a country music girl who could name every country singer worth knowing, knew who wrote the songs and which musicians played on their records. Lynyrd Skynyrd of Jacksonville, Fla., with their long hair and rock and roll music was a little naughty for me at 15. They seemed too fast and too free spirited for me. Besides, until two months earlier, I still had the rockn-roll icon who had been my favorite since I was three. Then, breaking my heart to pieces, Elvis Presley just up and died. My friends would play “Free Bird” — or most especially “Sweet Home Alabama” — which even I, the country music dork, could appreciate the opening chords on

that song, its twang sounding almost as familiar to me as a steel guitar. Later, I realized that their music and lyrics were similar to what I love because country music gave birth to Southern rock and roll and songwriters like Ronnie Van Zant. Two incidences and one opportunity brought this series to being. There is the fact that this column has appeared for many years in the Enterprise-Journal in McComb, Miss. Years ago, I discovered that an editor there, Charles Dunagin, was on the desk when they received a call that a plane was down. He covered this story, so I was impressed to know someone who worked such a big story. A while back, Showtime aired a documentary about the group and the doomed

flight. It had all the elements of dramatic storytelling: small town dreamers, high odds, huge success and tragedy. I was compelled to know more. The story is adorned with Southern heroes and the patented kindness that blankets both friends and strangers in the Deep South. Coincidentally, we were invited to a wedding in McComb around the same time. “I’m goin’ out to the crash site and do a story on Lynyrd Skynyrd while we’re in McComb,” I said. Tink laughed, amused by another uncommon idea of mine. “What do you know about Lynyrd Skynyrd? I bet you never owned one of their albums.” “I know a good story when I see one and, by the way, I do have ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’” Shortly before our trip, a

reader of mine in McComb, wrote that he and his wife enjoy my column greatly. “If you’re ever in McComb, we’d love to meet you. Maybe you and Tink could go to church with us,” Randy Dickerson wrote. The Lord had sent help. Perfect. “What are you doing Saturday after next?” I replied. “I’d like to see the swamp where the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crashed.” That’s how simply an amazing adventure began. This is part one of a fourpart series. In next week’s installment, we visit the site of the crash. Ronda Rich is the bestselling author of Let Me Tell You Something. I was, however, happy to hear from him for two reasons: I always like to get e-mail, whether positive or negative, because it means people are reading, and in this case I was pleased to see that my column is reaching people outside of Gwinnett County. The text of his e-mail, under the subject line “You

should be fired,” was as follows: “Your article reads like a college recruitment poster. Incredibly irresponsible, your words may influence others into ultimately risking their lives. You are not a virologist, you are not a scientist.” In response, rather than debating, I would just like to ask this reader a few questions:

When you say I should be fired, do you mean from my day job as a college professor or from my part-time gig as a freelance newspaper columnist? If the former, are you familiar with the concepts of tenure and academic freedom? If the latter, are you familiar with the First Amendment? Are you aware that the opinion expressed in that column — that Georgia should reopen college campuses in the fall — is also shared by University System leaders, who have announced plans to do just that? Are you suggesting that college students are more likely to die from COVID-19 than from drug overdoses, car accidents (including alcohol-related), or suicide? If so, what is your evidence for that assertion? Do you believe college leaders are being irresponsible when they keep their campuses open while thousands of students are dying each year from the causes mentioned above, as well

as many other causes — including infectious diseases like seasonal flu? If not, why not? Why do you believe campuses should close for something that is statistically a minor risk while remaining open despite other much more significant risks? Do you have any children in college? (I have two.) Do you believe that only doctors and scientists are allowed to have an opinion on this topic? Do you believe that only doctors and scientists are allowed to cite doctors and scientists? Do you believe that doctors and scientists are infallible? If so, how do you account for the many disagreements among doctors and scientists, on this issue and many others? Thank you. I eagerly await your replies! Rob Jenkins is a college professor. The views expressed here are his own. You can email Rob at rob.jenkins@ outlook.com.

Pearson Farms’ John Short said shoppers also have a variety of options for paying too, although electronic forms of payment are preferred to reduce contact as well. “Cash is no longer king, but we are accepting it and we are letting people get their own change and we don’t have to touch anything,” he said. “And then we provide hand sanitizer for them.” Schulz said, “We’re trying to do everything we can to make it as safe as we can.” Snellville’s market takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays at Snellville City Hall.

Lilburn using an online format The Lilburn Farmers Market is taking its own unique approach this year to ac-

commodate the COVID-19 pandemic. It is doing things differently from Suwanee and Snellville in that shopping for its market is done online and then picked up on Fridays. Shoppers at the Lilburn Farmers Market do their shopping by midnight on Wednesday at www.lilburnfarmersmarket.org. They can then pick up their order’s on Friday, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, which is located at 1400 Killian Hill Road in Lilburn. “Farmers Markets are considered essential businesses and now more than ever folks are looking for clean, local foods with less handling,” organizers of the market said in an announcement about the new format. “The Lilburn Farmers Market has always supported local and small businesses and we want to continue to support these vendors as well as bring safe, local foods to the Lilburn Community.”
