Senegal partners with UK lab to develop a handheld virus test kit UK-based laboratory Mologic is working with scientists in Senegal to make a diagnostic test for coronavirus that can produce test results within 10 minutes, the company said. The handheld device is the first diagnostic kit developed in the UK to be jointly manufactured in Africa, according to Mologic in a statement announcing the UK-funded initiative. The laboratory said it was working with the Pasteur Institute in Dakar and five other international research organizations to authenticate the test kits that will be produced by DiaTropix, a manufacturing facility also in the West African nation. “Rapid testing is going to be key to managing this outbreak, but ultimately vaccines are going to provide the long-term protection we need,” said Patrick Vallance, the UK Government chief scientific officer.

WORLD & NATION State Dept. raises global travel advisory, urges citizens to reconsider travel abroad By Jennifer Hansler and Paul Leblanc CNN

The State Department on Wednesday raised the worldwide travel advisory to Level 3: Reconsider Travel, urging U.S. citizens to reconsider travel abroad due to the coronavirus pandemic. “The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to reconsider travel abroad due to the global impact of COVID-19. Many areas throughout the world are now experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and taking action that may limit traveler mobility, including quarantines and border restrictions,” the department said in a statement. “Even countries, jurisdictions, or areas where cases have not been reported may restrict travel without notice.” The travel advisory comes the same day that the World Health Organization declared the virus a pandemic, with more than 1,200 cases in the U.S. European Union The note was released shortleaders denounce US ly after President Donald travel restrictions Trump’s Oval Office address, where he promised to use European Union leaders “the full power of the federal issued a withering denun- government” to confront the ciation of President Donald Trump’s decision to bar some Europeans from traveling to NATION the U.S. amid the coronavirus pandemic, as Trump McConnell: Senate will admitted he hadn’t told the be in session next week Europeans what was coming. to work on virus bill “We get along very well with European leaders, but despite planned recess we had to make a decision The Senate will be in sesand I didn’t want to take sion next week to work on time and, you know, it takes coronavirus legislation and a long time make the individual calls and we are call- will not go on a previousing and we had spoken to ly scheduled recess, Sensome of them prior to (the ate Majority Leader Mitch announcement),” Trump McConnell announced on Thursday. told reporters Thursday. “The Senate will be in sesCommunicating with the European Union — which sion next week,” McConconsists of 27 members, is nell, a Kentucky Republiheadquartered in Brussels can, wrote on Twitter. “I and has an embassy here — am glad talks are ongoing would not require calls to in- between the Administration dividual members. Beijing has announced it will enforce a 14-day quarantine on all international travelers arriving in the Chinese capital, as the number of novel coronavirus cases outside Asia continues to rise. On Tuesday, Beijing reported six new confirmed cases of the coronavirus, all of which were imported cases, including five from Italy and one from the United States. The new ruling, which came in to affect at midnight on Wednesday, is one of a number of travel restrictions being introduced across the region, as governments step up efforts to prevent a surge in cross-border infections. — From wire reports

zens who had been screened before entering the country — mimicking restrictions he applied to China last month. “We have seen dramatically fewer cases of the virus in the United States than are now present in Europe,” Trump said. “The European Union failed to take the same precautions and restrict travel from China and other hot spots.

As a result, a large number of new clusters in the United States were seeded by travelers from Europe.” There are 118,000 cases globally — including more than 1,200 in the U.S. — and more than 4,000 deaths, according to the WHO. The virus has found a foothold on every continent except for Antarctica.

Actors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s sons speaking out after parents’ virus diagnosis Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s sons have taken to social media to reassure fans that their parents are OK after being diagnosed with coronavirus. Chet Hanks took to Instagram and posted a video telling fans that he had just gotten off the phone with his parents, who are currently in a hospital in Australia. “I don’t think it’s anything to be too worried about. I appreciate everyone’s concern and the well wishes. I think it’s all going to be alright. I appreciate it. Everybody stay safe out there. Much love.” Colin Hanks, the eldest son of the couple, tweeted his thanks to fans. “We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from everyone. My parents are receiving excellent care in Australia and doing well (and in good spirits) given the circumstances.” Tom Hanks and Wilson were in Australia while Hanks was doing pre-production work on a film about singer Elvis Presley.

Kate Beckinsale posts powerful response to Harvey Weinstein’s prison sentence Kate Beckinsale posted a powerful response to Harvey Weinstein’s 23-year prison sentence, calling it a “huge relief.” Beckinsale shared her own allegations of harassment by Weinstein in 2017. In an Instagram post Wednesday, she recalled the premiere of her Weinstein-produced film “Serendipity” in 2001, when the mood following 9/11 was somber. Weinstein verbally abused her, Becksinsale said, for wearing a pantsuit to the premiere. The actress said that “the minute the door closed,” Weinstein cursed at her and called her a crude epithet, telling her she “ruined” his event. “The shock made me burst into tears. I tried to say ‘ Harvey, the city is on fire, people are still looking for their relatives none of us even felt the premiere was appropriate much less coming out dressed like it’s a bachelor party.” She described him as “livid” and a “bully.”

Gloria Gaynor fights coronavirus by taking her hit song ‘I Will Survive’ to the sink Since it was released in 1978, “I Will Survive” has been the ultimate breakup anthem, empowering both men and women that despite heartbreak, they will survive. But in the chaos surrounding coronavirus, the song has taken on a different (yet perfectly fitting) purpose with the queen of disco, Gloria Gaynor herself, taking the lead. With the classic chorus of her hit song, Gaynor took to TikTok to inspire others to properly wash their hands — with soap and water for at least 20 seconds — to combat the disease. — From wire reports

When cats are free to roam, wildlife suffers By Ashley Strickland CNN

When your house cat trots outside for a neighborhood stroll, it doesn’t end well for birds, bunnies, squirrels and other wildlife. And now, thanks to a new study, we know how much damage our feline friends can do. In fact, they kill even more prey than wild predators similar in size to cats, and they don’t have to go far to do it. The average range for pet cats allowed outside is about 328 feet from the

MUST READ house they live in. “We found that house cats have a two- to 10-times larger impact on wildlife than wild predators — a striking effect,” said Roland Kays, lead study author and zoologist at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. To track the behavior of house cats who were allowed to go outside, 925 cats across six countries were fitted with unobtrusive GPS devices. Scientists and citizen scientists used the data to track how

far the cats ranged, as well as any prey they captured and brought home across rural and urban areas in the U.S., the UK, Australia and New Zealand. The study published Wednesday in the journal Animal Conservation. “Since they are fed cat food, pets kill fewer prey per day then wild predators, but their home ranges were so small that this effect on local prey ends up getting really concentrated,” Kays said. “Add to this the unnaturally high density of

pet cats in some areas, and the risk to bird and small mammal population gets even worse.” The study did not include feral cats. On average, the study found that house cats killed anywhere between 14.2 to 38.9 prey per 100 acres, per year. That averages out to about 3.5 prey each month per cat. The researchers believe this large number is due to the fact that neighborhoods can include a high density of cats — more so than wild predators living in the wild.

HPV cancers on the rise

EAR DR. ROACH: Four years ago, I was treated for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. One year later my tongue was removed. The chief surgeon told me the cancer had HPV “markers,” which I guess spread cancer throughout the tongue? Is this a common occurrence with Roach SCC of the tongue? Also, how does one catch the HPV virus? Finally, is there a vaccine to prevent being infected by the HPV virus? — J.K. ANSWER: Human papillomavirus is an increasing cause of head and neck cancer, including cancer of the tongue. It is more common in men. Smoking used to be the predominant cause of these types of cancers, but despite smoking rates going down, the rates of head and neck cancers have risen, mostly due to HPV-related cancers. Some estimates are that 80% of head and neck cancer now is HPV related. The base of the tongue and the tonsillar region are the most common sites for the cancer to begin. HPV is acquired through sexual activity. It usually takes 10 years or more after the virus is acquired for cancer to grow. Once cancer starts, it tends to grow locally, and may spread to lymph nodes and then may even spread to distant sites, such as the lung. HPV-associated cancer is not more aggressive or dangerous than smoking-related cancer. In fact, new evidence suggests better outcomes for HPV-associated cancers. Surgery remains the primary therapy, but radiation and chemotherapy may be used, depending on the stage of the disease. There is absolutely a vaccine to prevent HPV infection for both men and women. It is most effective if given before exposure to HPV, which is why it is recommended before the onset of sexual activity. However, the HPV vaccine is now indicated for people up to the age of 45 and could even be considered in some people older than that, such as a person who has been with very few partners their whole life and is about to become sexually active with new partners. There are only a few vaccines that protect against cancers, but the HPV vaccine is very effective at preventing cervical cancer, and data on head and neck cancer shows those vaccinated are at much lower risk for acquiring the cancercausing types of HPV. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Type 1 diabetes. In addition to an insulin pump, I was started on lisinopril. No follow-up blood test to check creatinine or high potassium levels was ever scheduled. The side effect of cough was more than I could tolerate. I requested a different high blood pressure medication with kidney protection benefits and was started on an angiotensin receptor blocker, Cozaar, but with no follow-up blood test to check on creatinine or high potassium levels, which is indicated in my diabetes bible. Since it was printed, has there been a change in the guidelines? — W.I.P. ANSWER: ACE inhibitors like lisinopril and angiotensin receptor blockers have multiple benefits, especially in people with diabetes. These medications reduce risk of both heart and kidney disease. However, they can cause some problems. It is expected that both creatinine (a measure of kidney function) and potassium (an important salt in the cells and blood) will increase with treatment. An increase in greater than 25% of the creatinine is concerning, and very elevated potassium levels can be dangerous.

COLUMNIST I AMY DICKINSON

Widower worries about son’s need to cuddle

D

EAR READERS: Every year I step away from my daily column to work on other creative projects. I’ve gathered some topical “Best Of” columns from 10 years ago. Today’s compilation considers some of the abundant challenges of fatherhood (Some content has been lightly edited.) I’ll be back in two weeks with fresh columns. DEAR AMY: I am a widower with five children. We live in a large home in a private, gated community. I allowed my wife’s sister and her family to move in with us when she and her husband lost their jobs and their home was foreclosed. They have three older children. I am truly blessed that both our families get along well, and that my children have a mother figure in my sister-in-law. I am concerned, though, for my youngest son “Stevie.” At a little over 2 years old, he has yet to speak (for some context, I didn’t start talking until I was 4). Stevie also likes to cuddle with everyone! Despite having his own bed and stuffed bear, Stevie and bear can be found in the beds of either his brothers, sisters, cousins, aunt and uncle, or my own! He does not discriminate! I found him recently sleeping with our chocolate Lab!

Is this behavior something to be concerned a b o u t ? Friends and family say it’s just a phase, Dickinson but I’d like to be sure. What is your take on this? — Concerned in Michigan DEAR CONCERNED: I’m happy your unusual living situation is working out for your families, but as the youngest, “Stevie” may be expressing some of the natural stresses of being at the end of the cuddle chain in your very large household. At only 2 years old, he has been through a great deal. He now has a wealth of cuddling and sleeping options, and he is trying them all. Take your son to see his pediatrician for an evaluation. His lack of language could be a sign of a processing or hearing problem, or evidence that he has suffered a loss, is stressed and confused, and is going through a transition. I’d let him cuddle with anyone and everyone (as long as you are assured he is safe), but you, especially, should give him as much one-on-one “Daddy time” as you can. August 2010 DEAR AMY: My daughter is 19 and has been dat-

ing her boyfriend for 2-1/2 years. She has four siblings. All of her siblings dislike this guy. He lives with my daughter in my ex-wife’s house most of the time. He rarely contributes to the household resources, yet he often takes advantage of all the household has to offer. He is polite and kind to her and to her mother — and to me — but I don’t think he is a warm, giving person overall. He is employed and he treats my daughter well, and she loves him, but almost everyone he encounters does not like him. I don’t think he does anything to elevate her or make her better, and I am convinced that she would be better off without him. I am afraid to intervene because I don’t want her to have to choose between him and me, and yet I feel like I should say something. I made a mistake marrying her mother, and I wish my parents had intervened when I was her age. Do you have any advice for me? — Concerned Dad DEAR DAD: If you lay an ultimatum at your daughter’s feet and force her to choose between you and her boyfriend, she will “choose” him, I assure you. Despite your current and retrospective take on the matter, you

would have done the same at her age. I agree with you that this relationship doesn’t sound ideal, although according to you he treats your daughter and the rest of the family well. This person’s function in your daughter’s life is not to elevate and make her “better.” She should elevate herself and strive to be her best self. You should mentor your daughter to further her education, do good work and aspire to great things. Without trashing her boyfriend, you could tell her, “You’re young and wonderful. I want you to live your very best life. I feel you’re too young to settle down, and hope you will consider all of your options.” You could tell her you’ve learned from your own mistakes, but please don’t say you regret marrying her mom. That is a disrespectful message to convey regarding the mother of your children. July 2010 You can contact Amy Dickinson via email: ASKAMY@amydickinson. com. Readers may send postal mail to Ask Amy, P.O. Box 194, Freeville, NY 13068. You can also follow her on Twitter @askingamy or “like” her on Facebook.

Follow through on the promises you’ve made to yourself as well as to others. Stop talking and start doing, or someone will call your bluff. You’ll have plenty of opportunities this year, but only you can take advantage of them. Change is necessary, so get motivated. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) — Look for an excellent investment that will contribute to your security and ease your mind. A positive approach to life will attract interesting people who have something to offer. Romance is favored. ARIES (March 21-April 19) — It’s time to update your living conditions. Consider your options and look for hidden opportunities or a new environment that will stimulate your mind and get you headed in an exciting direction. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — Help a good cause. Your willingness to pitch in will impress someone important. Networking will bring results. Form a partnership with someone who can contribute something you lack. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — Finish what you start and ease tension. You can ask for help, but make sure you know exactly who and what you want in your corner. Protect your reputation and don’t criticize others or display anger. CANCER (June 21-July 22) — Social activity will turn out surprisingly well. A change of scenery will pique your imagination. Visit an establishment you used to frequent. Love and romance are in the stars. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) — Get together with friends or offer help to a deserving organization. If you keep active, you’ll feel good about your accomplishments and avoid criticism and complaints. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) — Mingle, network and promote what’s on your agenda. Someone may try to steal your thunder. If you offer facts and figures and present your thoughts with passion, you’ll come out on top. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) — Mix business with pleasure and stick to the facts. You will impress everyone and will be praised for your skill and ability to take action and get things done. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) — Have fun, mingle and get to know creative people like yourself. Use your knowledge and expertise to draw attention. Your unusual insight and approach will intrigue someone special. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23Dec. 21) — Expect someone to oppose you or put you in a vulnerable position if you are too open. Be ready to step up and to do damage control. Keep personal changes secret. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Look over your options carefully until you feel ready to make a sound decision. A partnership could develop out of networking functions. Romance is encouraged. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Don’t waste time worrying about things you can’t change. Question your lifestyle and consider what you can do to improve your current situation. Use intelligence, not anger, to bring about change.

Buford did not say when it would make a decision about possibly extending its closures. “The district will monitor closely and assess the situation to determine if this closure should be extended past this week,” Buford City Schools officials said on Facebook. “When a date to re-open is determined we will let you know immediately. This decision comes as a result of thoughtful discussions regarding what is best for our students, staff, and families.” During a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Gov. Brian Kemp said the state is leaving decisions to close local school systems and government departments up to their leaders. “Given the rise of coronavirus cases along with the push for more school closures, I’m going to issue a call to action for commu-

While Norcross is calling off its events, the city of Lawrenceville and the organizers of the Suwanee Beer Fest said they are currently planning to go forward with their events — although precautions will be taken to encourage health and keep attendees sick from the virus. No matter what their decision is, local institutions have Kemp’s support. Kemp indicated he thinks closing schools could put Georgia in a better position to prevent widespread cases of COVID-19. Kemp said the decision was not made unilaterally was sparked by parent and staff concerns relayed by local school districts. “I think we’re staying ahead of the curve,” Kemp said. “If you look at Ohio they closed all their schools ... they had their first case five days before (GA). our actions today —

also said people with those symptoms should stay home. “Please don’t go out if you are ill,” Toomey said. “We have seen cases of people known to be ill who have gone out into the community.” For now, Kemp said he is not ordering public schools, universities and technical colleges to close as concerns grown over a potential outbreak. He said he will support any decisions by local school districts, day cares, colleges and businesses that choose to shut down. “At this point, we believe local decisionmaking is the right action,” Kemp said. Classes at the University of Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State and all other schools in the University System of Georgia will be cancelled for two weeks starting Monday. Atlanta Public Schools will also be closed for at least two weeks. State government employees will also begin largely working from home next week on orders from the governor. Like Lawrenceville’s event, Suwanee Beer Fest will take precautions to limit the chances of someone with the virus spreading it to other people. When attendees enter the gates at the Beer Fest, volunteers who will be handing out the drinking glasses will be wearing gloves. Attendees will have to hold their own glasses as beer is poured into them, draft beer will be poured from pitchers into glasses and cans and bottles will not be allowed to touch the glasses. Barrow County Schools have also closed for the next two weeks to address the COVID-19 situation. “During this closing, there will be no extracurricular activities, sports, school events, or field trips,” Barrow County schools officials said in a statement. “As additional information and guidance is provided, updates will be shared. Over this period, schools and buses will continue to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected using COVID-19 approved cleaners. Extra hand sanitizer stations, wash stations and restrooms have also been ordered for the event. “We’ll have hand sanitizer at the front gate, we’ll have hand sanitizer at various places around the park and we’re doing everything possible to keep it safe and fun for everybody,” Beer Fest organizer Tiffany Belflower said. Belflower also said she and other Beer Fest officials watched a press conference Gov. Brian Kemp held Thursday on the COVID-19 situation in Georgia as they continue to monitor the situation with the virus on a “day-by-day” basis. Some factors Beer Fest organizers have been weighing are the investment craft beer vendors have made in preparing for the event, including producing merchandise to hand out at the festival. “As of now, we’re still going on as planned,” Belflower said. “The only thing that can really

change that is if we’re asked to close it down by the powers that be.” The coronavirus has had an impact on ticket sales for this year’s event. Typically, by now, abut 5,000 tickets would have been sold for Suwanee Beer Fest. Belflower said news of the virus caused sales to slow considerably, however. Only about 3,000 tickets had been sold as of Thursday afternoon. “(Ticket sales) came to a trickle when all of this started a couple of weeks ago,” Belflower said. The PBR pro bull riding event scheduled for Infinite Energy Arena this weekend will be held but without fans, PBR officials said. “The health and safety of our fans, riders, partners and employees remains a top priority, and as such we — alongside our arena partners and local authorities – are closely monitoring the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation,” PBR said in a statement.

COVID-19 sends the sports world into disarray

From staff and wire reports

The coronavirus pandemic nearly wiped out the sports world over the course of the past two days. Postponement of seasons, and in some cases cancellation, became the norm Thursday as league after league made their plans to manage COVID-19 public. A few sporting events will continue with no fans, but sports in the U.S. will be scarce in the near future. Here’s a look at some of the decisions made in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak this week: ♦ The Georgia High School Association recommended its member schools suspend spring sports activities until further notice. “The regular season belongs to the schools themselves,“ GHSA executive director Robin Hines said. “We can only recommend that they suspend playing. The final decision will rest with the local school systems, but we hope they heed the Governor’s and the GHSA’s recommendations.” The GHSA expects the literary competition to be made up at a future date. The future of spring sports competitions and championships is more uncertain. “We will definitely suspend for the next two weeks, as the Governor recommended,” said Hines. “By close of business on Friday, March 27, we will issue an update.” ♦ The NCAA opted to cancel, rather than postpone, the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships because of coronavirus fears. The loss of March Madness also means the long awaited men’s basketball Final Four won’t be contested in Atlanta as expected. The NCAA initially planned to contest its championships with only essential staff and limited family attendance, but reversed course a day later in the wake of numerous conferences calling off their season-ending tournaments. ♦ The Southeastern Conference, in addition to calling off its men’s basketball tournament, has suspended all regular season sporting events on conference campuses through March 30 because of coronavirus concerns. The decision also includes all conference championships, including the SEC Gymnastics Championships meet, which was planned for March 21 at Gwinnett’s Infinite Energy Center. The announcement doesn’t impact teams and individuals in NCAA competition at this time, according to the SEC announcement. ♦ The Southeastern Conference canceled the remainder of its men’s basketball tournament in Nashville, Tenn., over coronavirus concerns, and the Atlantic Coast Conference made the same decision with its tournament later in the afternoon. The Big Ten, Big 12 and other major conferences also called off their tournaments, and more conferences are expected to follow suit. The SEC had four tournament games scheduled for Thursday, beginning at 1 p.m. with Alabama against Tennessee. Georgia was set to play Florida at 3:30 p.m. Florida State began warmups for its ACC tourney game before a decision was reached to halt play. ♦ NASCAR released a statement Thursday afternoon that it will run the next two race weekends without fans in attendance. With coronavirus leading to the suspension or postponement of other sports in America, NASCAR revealed its intentions to still run races but in front of empty stands, beginning this week at Atlanta Motor Speedway. ♦ Major League Baseball canceled all spring training games and delayed Opening Day by at least two weeks as the nation continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic. MLB also announced Thursday that 2020 World Baseball Classic Qualifier games scheduled for Tuscon, Ariz., had been postponed indefinitely. ♦ The ECHL, following the lead of the NHL and AHL, suspended operations Thursday. The Atlanta Gladiators have just 11 games remaining in the regular season. They occupy the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division, two points ahead of Orlando and one point behind Greenville. Atlanta, surging with a record of 8-0See DISARRAY, B2

Wesleyan junior Jacob Price started his state meet with a bang, ripping a confident inward 1 ½ that had been a consistent strength in recent practices. He worked steadily through the next five preliminary round dives to earn a place in the finals. The second time through his repertoire went even better. Until the last one.

“It was odd because it was probably one of my most consistent dives of the season,” said Price, who got an unusually early jump on the sport at age 4. “I don’t know. I just messed up. So that was disappointing, but I was still happy with how it all ended up.” Price, the Daily Post’s boys Diver of the Year, finished third in Class A-AAA for the second straight year. His podium finish, though it didn’t end on the highest note, provided the Wolves with the spark they

needed to come in second overall. “Jacob is more than an amazing diver,” Wesleyan head swimming coach Kevin Kadzis said. “He is just an all around fantastic person. “Unselfish and well balanced with a great perspective, he is a three-sport athlete while taking an extremely rigorous academic course load. Two major elbow surgeries had Maggie Hennebaul turning to diving after a lifetime as a gymnast. The move relieved pressure on her body, and her mind. Hennebaul, the Daily Post’s

Girls Diver of the Year, comes from a wildly athletic family. Their last name is synonymous with wrestling in Georgia. “My older brother, Luke, did all the sports (at Mountain View),” she said with a laugh. “My dad coached both of my brothers a lot. Meanwhile I was doing my own thing with gymnastics. That was me and my mom’s thing.

“One thing I did realize when I switched over to diving, it brought not only me to my full potential, but it also kind of merged that divide. Gymnastics had a rift where it’s a lifestyle, it’s not a sport. Meanwhile, diving was a little bit more laid back.” Hennebaul found a life outside the gym, though her compulsion to succeed still has her

Sanders the wrong candidate at the wrong time

fter his thumping by former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ hopes of winning the Democratic nomination are slipping away. So why is his presidential campaign tanking? Because his message is not resonating with the voters he claims to champion. Working-class voters were supposed to be Sanders’ firewall in Michigan, but the firewall did not hold. Sanders tried to convince blue-collar voters that Biden had betrayed them by supporting trade deals that sent their jobs to Mexico and China. It didn’t work. Biden won union households in Michigan by an 18-point margin. Why? One reason is that while those trade deals happened long ago (and President Trump has since renegotiated NAFTA), Sanders threatened to take away something these union workers have now and want to keep: the generous union health-care plans they won through collective bargaining. For more than twenty years, Bill Maher has set the boundaries of where funny, political talk can go on American television. First on “Politically Incorrect (Comedy Central, ABC, 1993-2002), and for the last fourteen years on HBO’s “Real Time, Maher’s combination of unflinching honesty and big laughs have garnered him 41 Emmy nominations. Maher won his first Emmy in 2014 as executive producer for the HBO series, “VICE. In October of 2008, this same combination was on display in Maher’s uproarious and unprecedented swipe at organized religion, “Religulous, directed by Larry Charles (“Borat). MOVIES Like a sledgehammer, ‘The Hunt’ tells its story with blunt force HHHH By Michael Clark Movie Critic

The 14th feature based on the 1924 short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, “The Hunt” was originally scheduled to be released on Sept. 17, 2019. But – according to a press release issued by Universal – was canceled in the wake of mass shootings in Texas and Florida in the late summer. Some have concluded the cancellation was due to negative comments on Twitter from President Donald Trump which never identified the film by name. Recalling statements made by Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel (“never let a good crisis go to waste”), there was little doubt “The Game” would eventually come out. The question wasn’t if but when — and when has finally arrived. The first major live-action studio release to directly comment on the result of the 2016 Presidential election, “The Hunt” – by its mere existence – will further distance the already wide chasm not between Republicans and Democrats but rather conservatives and liberals (and yes, there is a difference). In “The Hunt,” these camps are identified as “elites” and “deplorables” – divisive terms not even the most seasoned spin doctors could possibly twist into anything resembling positive or neutral.

photo: patti perret/Universal

Members of the hunted (from left, Ike Barinholz, back to camera, Justin Hartley, Kate Nowlin), including Daisy (Emma Roberts) and Don (Wayne Duvall), find weapons in a clearing in “The Hunt.” If you have any interest in the 2020 presidential election (and, sad to say, there are more who don’t care than do), you HAVE TO SEE this movie. While it often paints with broad strokes, it also pays close attention to the stuff taking place in the margins; things not normally present in action thrillers, horror blood-baths or even highbrow, politically-charged art films. The big problem in reviewing a movie like this is if you reveal anything taking place after the first 10 minutes it will spoil the entire affair. The same cannot be said for letting everyone know the premise going in.

Before the opening credits are complete, we see that Athena (Hilary Swank) is participating in a group text where several people are looking forward to a visit to “The Manor” where deplorables will be hunted. A joking and half-hearted suggestion of deleting the text exchange follows. In the next scene, a halfdozen or so people are flying in an ultra-plush private plane where caviar and $250,000 a bottle champagne are being served. Someone who was supposed to be drugged interrupts the party and Athena, none too pleased with being rudely woken, leaves her secluded lair and drives the spiked heel of one of her pumps

‘Slay The Dragon’ gives half a history lesson

those who don’t follow with them in lock-step. Rather than preserve the mystery, someone thought it would be a great idea to portray liberals as crazed, bloodthirsty hunters of middleAmerican, red-state kidnap victims for sport. Before you contemplate that premise, take it one step further and consider if the tables were turned. What would the reaction be if a group of multi-cultural liberal individuals were snatched up against their will and hunted by conservatives as if they were game? A totally off-the-rails, wing-nut premise doesn’t mean there’s not a good (if not great) movie possible.

If you don’t know the definition of “gerrymandering,” please do not feel uninformed. There are quite a few politically astute people who also have no clue what it means. But if you see this new documentary from co-directors Chris Durrance and Barak Goodman (“Woodstock”), you’ll walk away not only understanding how gerrymandering works, but why it is allegedly so bad. What you will not get much of are the details of the practice from the past and its popularity not only among lawmakers of both major U.S. political parties but close to two dozen other countries. It’s the best half-history lesson you’ll see all year. Committing the most egregious of all possible documentary sins, Durrance and Goodman take a page from the Michael Moore playbook and cherrypick their facts while presenting them without a hint of context or modesty. You do have to give the filmmakers credit for one thing – they’re releasing the movie before the 2020 Census starts. It never hurts to let people know that what they say to census-takers could affect the value of their future votes. Prior to the 1812 election, then Massachusetts governor – and later James Madison’s vice president — Elbridge Gerry created a law that allowed him to redistrict a section of Boston which would net him a maximum number of favorable votes and keep opposition votes to a bare minimum. The odd, seemingly random shaping of the district inspired Elkanah Tisdale to adapt a map of the area into a cartoon re-

into the eye socket of the disruptive hostage. The bearded, plus-size, denim-clad corpse is then tossed into a room of stillasleep passengers who will soon wake up in a field with others like them and will start dropping like flies under the most violent of methods. The biggest and most obvious question isn’t what happens next but rather why would any studio executive in their right mind green-light a movie such as this in the first place? Seriously? It shouldn’t come as any surprise to anyone that the movie industry more than tilts to the political left and doesn’t have a particularly high opinion of

And to their credit, director Craig Sobel (“Compliance,” “Z for Zachariah”) along with writers Nick Cuse (“The Leftovers,” “Watchman”) and Damien Lindel (“Prometheus,” “World War Z”) defy several genre horror/thriller conventions. Again, to get into the specifics would stray into spoiler territory but – with just one notable exception in the third act – every scene delivers an unpredictable, narrative-changing twist. There are also three strategically-placed flashback scenes which fill in what might initially appear to be big holes in the plot. Like everything else about the movie, the messaging isn’t subtle; there are no gray areas. The personalities and motives of all but three characters are vividly apparent and a post on the movie’s Facebook page (“choose your side”) further makes it clear the studio and the filmmakers’ mission was to add further ideological distance between the political parties. On that level, it succeeded and then some. Some might not appreciate the lack of nuance and finesse and will recoil at the blunt-force, in-yourface method of storytelling. But many more will find it surprisingly refreshing. Many people on both sides of the political aisle will either love or hate the movie; very few will watch it and walk away feeling indifferent. It will get under everybody’s skin, make some cheer and others weep. For better or for worse it will grab you by the throat and won’t let you go. (Universal)

Katie Fahey in “Slay The Dragon.” sembling a salamander and a new portmanteau political term was coined. Not surprisingly, this practice of vote manipulation (some may say quasi-voter negation) spread across the colonies like wildfire, virtually guaranteeing the party in power free rein in elections. Because of population shifts and changing mindsets of voters, few gerrymandered districts stay the same forever and are regularly redrawn. What everyone needs to remember, gerrymandering is not the exclusive province of either party — both Democrats and Republicans do it. The secret to successful modern-day gerrymandering comes down to just one thing: being the party in power in a particular state in a year when the census is conducted. After the midterms in 2010 – when the Democrats lost big in the house and senate – the Republicans gained majorities in many states including Michigan and Wisconsin, which is where the filmmakers dedicate most of their time. It is during these portions where Republicans redraw districts which (in theory) would favor their next presidential candidate – Mitt Romney. As Romney lost, this didn’t serve the desired narrative so the accent shifted to the 2016 and 2020 candidate Donald Trump. Never once mentioned is the Democratic-controlled 3rd district in Maryland with a new 2010 gerrymandered area which looks like a Jack-

son Pollack painting and covers more than half of the state. In this movie, the salamander cartoon has been appropriated into a cause logo and rechristened as a dragon – hence the title. Throughout the movie, Durrance and Goodman go back and forth between talking-head interviews with political wonks, former politicians and Katie Fahey, a Michigan woman who started a grassroots movement to change the gerrymandering laws in her state and maybe others. Chipper and driven with superb organizing talents, Fahey is relentless in her quest to – not get rid of gerrymandering completely – but rather to take the power away from some people and give it to others. The “others” would be unelected citizens without any political leanings who would have to either be appointed or elected. The irony and hypocrisy of this short-term non-solution is astounding and would result in the exact same situation down the road. Like gerrymandered districts, a movie that concentrates on one party exercising its legal right is not only a disservice to people unaware of the law, it taints the truth. If gerrymandering is ever made illegal across the country, it will have to be done in Congress – the place occupied by all of those lovely people who will never, ever vote against it – or term limits, for that matter. Those are the real dragons. (Magnolia)

It’s tremendously difficult to come up with movies that are both original in concept and uniquely framed, but that’s what writer/director Benh Zeitlin did in 2012 with “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” An arthouse drama set in Louisiana, it keenly blurred the lines between fantasy and reality and hope and despair. The film received four Oscar nominations, including two for Zeitlin and one for Quvenzhané Wallis who – at the age of nine – was the youngest-ever nominee in the Best Lead Actress category. Taking a long eight years to deliver his follow-up, Zeitlin again mixes fantasy and reality with a pint-sized female lead, a Louisiana setting and an even more pronounced artsy presentation. In addition to doing next to nothing new from a visual or narrative approach, Zeitlin and his cowriter sister Eliza make the big gamble of adapting one of most beloved children’s stories (“Peter Pan”) of all-time. Unlike the recent “The Invisible Man” and this week’s “The Hunt” – both adapted from classic works of literature over a dozen times each, “Peter Pan” is not the type of story which lends itself to too much creative latitude. Take away Tinker Bell, fairy dust, Neverland, Peter’s ability to fly and – most importantly, a kid-friendly approach – and you’re left with a depressing and preachy flick very few people of any age will like. In a manner similar to that of the 2016 “It,” “Wendy” is a movie with (mostly) child characters no child would want to or should see. There are scant-few fantasy elements and they’re not of the “Disney,” safe-as-milk variety. The bible-belt gumbo trappings of blue-collar Louisiana where

Devin France in “Wendy.” trains double as circus rides provides stark contrast to the final two acts. Neverland here is a deserted island (Montserrat in the Caribbean) with an active volcano, parched Earth which belches steam air, half-sunk rusted boats and black sand beaches strewn with waste of all sorts. However blighted this exotic land might be, it’s still a slice of heaven for Wendy (played by Devin France and four other performers) and her twin brothers James and Douglas (Gavin and Gavin Naquin). Content but bored at home, they succumb to the pied-piper charms of Peter (Yashua Mack) a mini-Rasta boy with dreadlocks sporting a tattered private school blazer. Confident to the point of recklessness, Peter is equal parts tent revivalist, carnival barker and shameless huckster who promises eternal youth – but only if you believe it. Doubters need not apply. While Peter, the siblings and a handful of others dash barefoot through forests and frolic in various bodies of water, there are a couple of dozen senior citizens who – with just minimal make-up – could be extras on “The Walking Dead.” Ostensibly the substitutes for author J.M. Barrie’s pirates, the old folks are in search of their Captain Hook who finally arrives after a scene where a child has one his hands chopped off with a sword by another child. This isn’t a fairy tale; it’s “Lost” by way of “Cast Away” and “Lord of the Flies.” Zeitlin is an ardent student of the Terrence Malick School of atmospheric storytelling.

So arid and unconventional, Malick makes Stanley Kubrick come off looking like Woody Allen. With the right subject matter, this can be a plus but a light children’s story turned into a tale of runaway pre-teens facing injury, dismemberment and no food (it would appear no one eats in this Neverland) isn’t even close in look or tone to the iconic source material. In a manner not nearly as blunt and clunky as “mother!” from 2017, the Zeitlins include a mystical underwater animal character dubbed “Mother” which acts as the stand-in for Mother Nature. With humanlike eyes, Mother looks like a catfish and is the size of a shark but is largely benevolent and mostly harmless. With the trash on the beach and the presence of Mother, the filmmakers’ political tsktsk commentary is relatively subtle and completely unnecessary. There have been several directors in the past (Sam Raimi, Dennis Hopper, Neill Blomkamp, John Huston, Steven Soderbergh) who wowed everyone with their debuts only to strike out on their second at-bat. The big difference here is that Zeitlin has more or less made the same movie twice. This might be just a holdingpattern film or it could be a sign that Zeitlin operates within a small comfort zone and has no intention whatsoever of ever stretching out or trying anything different. Hopefully, Zeitlin won’t wait another eight years before we find out if “Wendy” was just a mistake or the harbinger of just more mediocrity and repetition. (Searchlight Pictures)

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT THEATER REVIEW

STRONG MESSAGE

‘On Your Feet!’ puts audiences in Miami’s Cuban immigrants’ shoes while moving to the beat

W

hen my family and I started vacationing in Miami a decade or so ago, I remember walking around Ocean Drive in South Beach and being enamored with the flashing lights, bright colored buildings, the even flashier cars, and the loud music emitting through speakers from nearby bars and restaurants. The music. It makes the atmosphere in Miami irresistible. Even if you can’t dance or are normally too shy to do so (like me) the sounds of trombones, Cruz saxophones, trumpets, claves and drums under sunshine and palm trees is enough to at least — and I mean at the very least — move your head and tap your feet. The cast of “On Your Feet,” which tells the story of CubanAmericans Emilio and Gloria Estefan, brought Miami to downtown Lawrenceville during its opening night Thursday, March 5. Everything was there — flashing lights, bright costumes, a diverse cast, Cuban accents and, of course, rhythm. The audience began to lean forward in their seats even before intermission. They clapped and danced in their seats. I was no different. This was my first time at a live musical, but not my first time hearing “Rhythm is Gonna Get You,” “Conga” and “Get On Your Feet.” My own immigrant parents, particularly my mom, woke my siblings and I up every Saturday when we were kids to that type of

casey gardner

Max J. Cervantes, Maria Bilbao and the cast of “On Your Feet!” upbeat music to get us started on the weekend cleaning. Watching the musical took me back to that time. At intermission, I turned to my boyfriend, who’s a tough critic with almost everything that we do, and before I could ask him what he thought of the show, he gave me a big smile and said, “It’s great.” Throughout the show, the woman sitting in the row behind us yelled praises at the cast members. She seemed to be especially fond of Consuelo, Gloria’s grandmother, and I can see why. Sitting inside the intimate Aurora Theatre, with the actors sitting on the

edge of the stage or dancing in the aisles, it was easy to feel connected to the characters, to feel like you were a part of the story, not just watching. When Gloria’s parents stared into space as they “watched” TV, I felt like I was sitting in the living room across from them. I got chills on my arms when we learned Consuelo had passed away. The audience “wowed” out loud when Maria Bilbao, the actress playing Gloria, moved her hips and danced and sang with a similar power as the reallife Gloria. And when Gloria returned to the stage for the first time

after being injured in a tour bus crash, not only did audio of clapping come from the speakers surrounding the small theatre, but the actual audience clapped and cheered as if we had been with her every step of the way of her recovery. While all the dancing and singing was enough to keep me entertained throughout the show, there were also several moments that reminded me that Emilio and Gloria Estefan’s story is greater than their rise fame. It’s also the story of the struggles and stereotypes they faced as Spanish-speaking artists

trying to cross over to an English-language audience. The musical included the moments when Gloria’s music was “too Latin” for American audiences and “too American” for Latin audiences. Although I’m Mexican-American and not Cuban-American, I felt a sense of pride watching the musical when Emilio and Gloria Estefan made it in the music industry in the U.S. Their cultural impact on American society helped pave the way for Latin artists in this country. Think back to Super Bowl LIV in Miami on Feb. 2, when Shakira, J. Lo, Bad Bunny

and J Balvin marked the first all-Latin lineup in the event’s history and the first Latina headliner since Gloria Estefan in 1999. The sociopolitical significance of the musical may have been disguised in Latin Pop music and quick moves, but the message was not lost. For one night, the cast of “On Your Feet!” managed to take me back to my immigrant roots, to the Miami bars and clubs in the ’80s, and on tour with Gloria Estefan. SONGS IN THE SOUTH special photo: Kate awtrey/infinite energy arena

Sturgill Simpson brought his psychedelic brand of southern rock to Infinite Energy Arena on March 7. By Taylor Denman taylor.denman@ gwinnettdailypost.com

What began as an awkward moment for some who attended Sturgill Simpson’s Good Look’n Tour on March 7 at Infinite Energy Arena actually stole the show. Opening act Tyler Childers and his band had just wrapped up their set and musicians began filing off stage. Everyone but the frontman himself left the stage, leading to some inebriated chants of “One more song! One more song!” Fans didn’t get a song. “Allow me to introduce the most important man in the room, Justin Lascek,” Childers said before vacating the stage. Lascek — a muscle-bound, coarsely-bearded, 34-year-old — took the stage and gave kudos to Childers and his band. He was greeted with some confused applause, but that was the last tepid response he received. The South Gwinnett High School alum began to tell the crowd his story. March 7, the day Simpson’s

Sturgill Simpson mesmerizes fans, offers a tribute to a hometown veteran

Good Look’n Tour stopped in Duluth, was a few days after the anniversary of a blast that cost the Green Beret both his legs. Lascek nearly bled to death, was flown to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and was subject to 24 surgeries with his mom, Diane Hoffman, by his side. While in the hospital, Lascek and his mom were listening to Sturgill Simpson when the Snellville native mentioned he wanted to meet him. Lascek not only met Simpson, he’s traveled with him since being discharged from Walter Reed. Since 2019, Lascek has toured with Simpson and addressed rowdy crowds onstage to tell them about the Special Forces Foundation, which assists Green Berets and their families by helping the veterans transition from military to civilian life.

Lascek said one dollar from each Good Look’n Tour ticket went to the Special Forces Foundation. “Regardless of politics, war takes a toll on those of us that conducted it,” Lascek said. “It destroys our brains, our emotions, our families. Some of us get hurt pretty bad and some of us don’t make it back. The Special Forces Foundation helps all of those populations.” Lascek’s story moved deputies at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department in 2019, inspiring a blood drive in his name. Lascek’s cameo so close to his hometown was like a splash of cold water before Simpson’s trippy brand of southern rock took over. Simpson’s set was divided into two halves. He played, in order, his 2019 album, “SOUND & FURY.” The album was released with an accompanying anime film on

Netflix with the same name. I push my glasses higher onto my nose and pretentiously stroke my beard before I write the next clause — the best way to experience “SOUND & FURY” is consecutively. Simpson and his band stepped on stage in matching orange leisure suits and opened with a roaring, instrumental song called “Ronin.” Simpson’s guitar does the talking as it induces the audience into a a hypnotic trance. Songs blend into one another and transition nicely from psychedelic instrumental, to grunge to the groovy, distorted tune, “Sing Along.” Simpson played roughly the first half of the record without interruption before breaking to greet his thrilled crowd and express his appreciation for making it to Georgia before the peak of allergy season. He then dove into the remainder of his fourth stu-

dio album. There are visual elements, mostly lights, but nothing to take away from the dazzling ease with which Simpson’s fingers traverse the necks of his guitars. Simpson sprinkled his set with covers. He broke up the halves of his set with a Willie Nelson cover called “I’d Have to Be Crazy.” It was a crowd pleaser that landed in the middle of the Venn diagram comparing country fans with stoners, Simpson’s base. He mixed it in his mostlistened songs “Turtles All The Way Down” and “Long White Line” before closing out the show with “Call To Arms,” the energetic, chaotic final track on his 2016 album “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.” I’ve seen both Simpson and his opening act Tyler Childers described as rockabilly. Some of Simpson’s discography harkens back to country roots but those

songs were largely left off of this set. If Simpson brought the “rock,” Childers brought the “billy.” He and his band played a head-bobbing, foottapping set that was heavy on strings. There’s something nostalgic but refreshing about his Kentucky holler. Childers primarily strummed his acoustic guitar throughout his set, periodically stopping to introduce the other five members of his band. He introduced each of them prefixed with a list of titles like lords or boxers just called into the ring. You didn’t have to love modern country music to have enjoyed Good Look’n Tour. In fact, I’d assume most of the fans that packed Infinite Energy Arena on Saturday would reject the pop-infused artists that get the bulk of radio time today and a seat at the desk during ESPN’s College Gameday during football season. Like its sibling rock ‘n’ roll, country’s not dead as long as several thousand people in a suburban arena will pay to hear it.
