When the potential for danger on the roads heightens, so does the presence of law enforcement in Gwinnett County. Gwinnett County jail logs showed 15 arrests due to alcohol-related crimes during the New Year’s holiday between 9 a.m. on Dec. 31 and 9 a.m. on Jan. 1. Crimes ranged from driving under the influence, public drunkenness and open container violations. There was also an uptick in traffic violations as officers with various law enforcement agencies were trying to spot potential drunk drivers on New Year’s Eve and early New Year’s Day. A special detail from the Gwinnett County Police Department reported 12 total arrests, all related to DUIs. The special detail claimed 97 traffic stops, 14 speeding citations and 47 “other citations.” Sgt. Collin Flynn of the Gwinnett County Police Department said 10 officers
worked overtime on New Year’s Eve assigned specifically for traffic detail. The detail focuses on traffic-related issue between 1 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 4 a.m. on Jan. 1. The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department also provides a paddy wagon to transport intoxicated drivers and keep officers out monitoring the roads. “Obviously, it’s only 12 arrests — that’s still more than on a normal night, but it looks as though the majority of people are using Uber and taxis, which indicates most people are following the law,” Flynn said. Flynn said the police department has learned a visual presence is sometimes enough to deter drunk drivers, so special detail officers are positioned strategically. A special detail also allows officers assigned to normal shifts to spend time responding to calls. Flynn said officers are inundated with calls on New Year’s Eve. “We get a lot of people with alcohol related calls and also people shooting guns,” Flynn said.

A tractor-trailer overturned in the parking lot of a Norcross QuikTrip at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Brook Hollow Parkway Thursday morning. Norcross police said officers responded to the accident at 7:10 a.m. before
turning over the investigation to Georgia State Patrol. Georgia State Patrol said the tractor-trailer was traveling west on Jimmy Carter Boulevard, approaching the intersection with Brook Hollow Parkway. Traffic was stopped on Jimmy Carter for a traffic signal, a GSP spokesperson said. The tractor-trailer struck at least two vehicles on Jim-
my Carter Boulevard before traveling off the roadway, down an embankment and into the parking lot of a QuikTrip gas station. The tractor-trailer traveled down the embankment, overturned and struck multiple vehicles in the parking lot as it came to final rest. Georgia State patrol said 10 vehicles were involved in this incident. Injuries
were reported at the time of the investigation, but the severity of the injuries were unknown. Georgia Department of Transportation reported at approximately 9 a.m. that one lane on Jimmy Carter Boulevard was blocked and expected to be cleared after 10 a.m. GDOT reported there were seven cars involved in the accident.

Organizers of the annual Gwinnett County Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade have picked a young woman who, as a teenager, committed herself to taking a stand against food insecurity to be this year’s parade grand marshal. Lauren Seroyer has been named the grand marshal for the 2020 parade, which will take place Jan. 20 in Lawrenceville and is organized by the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County Inc. Seroyer, who is a sophomore at Louisiana State University, started the CARE Closet program with her twin brother, Steven, when they were students at Peachtree Ridge High School. It has now grown to 15 closets in five states, including
closets at multiple Gwinnett schools. “After learning that a Gwinnett County classmate did not have enough food at home and then discovering that teen food insecurity often causes students to engage in risky behaviors, Lauren Seroyer and her twin brother ... founded the (Community Assistance & Resource Effort) C.A.R.E. Closet,” United Ebony Society officials said in their announcement of Seroyer as the 2020 grand marshal. “CARE Closets are pantries on wheels that ‘live’ in private areas of high schools across the country and provide food and toiletries for high school students that are in need and their families.” This year’s parade will begin with a brief ceremony at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville at 11 a.m.
Jan. 20, with the parade set to follow at noon. This year’s theme is “The Time is Always Right to do What is Right!” It could be said that Seroyer’s work on the CARE Closets for sure fits in with that theme. Over the years, Seroyer has raised $86,000 for the CARE Closet program, including a $25,000 SPARK Prize form the United Way. When she won the prize in 2016 — as a high school junior — she told the Daily Post that she intended to expand it beyond Peachtree Ridge — and she has done just that. Over the years, she has received: a McDonald’s 365Black Community Choice award; a 100 Black Men of America’s National Youth Health & Wellness Award; a Prudential Spirit of Community Award; a Woodrow Wilson Community Service
Award; a Sodexo Stop Hunger national award; and a Spirit of Anne Frank award for her work on the CARE Closets. She was also named a Young Futurist by “The Root” in 2017. Seroyer didn’t stop her philanthropic efforts after she got to college. At LSU, she is the Student Government Association’s Assistant Director of Philanthropy and co-founder of the LSU Action Awareness Organization in addition to being an LSU Ambassador and a resident assistant. The Tau Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. has named her its Citizen of the Year. “Although, Lauren is extremely excited about these accomplishments, she is most proud of the difference that she and her brother are making for their peers all over the country,” United Ebony Society officials said.

demolished and replaced with a new crossing. The bridge replacement means Flowery Branch Road will be closed to traffic from Apple Grove Road to Lilly Stem Drive. The bridge replacement is part of ongoing work along the I-85 corridor north of Buford. “Flowery Branch Road Bridge is the final bridge
replacement in the I-85 Widening, Phase 1 project, the first Major Mobility Investment Program project to break ground,” GDOT officials said in an announcement of the bridge closure. “The project adds 26 new lane miles by widening both directions of I-85 from two to three lanes between I-985 in Gwinnett County and SR 53 in Jackson County
and replaces three I-85 overpass bridges (Spout Springs Road, Jesse Cronic Road, and Flowery Branch Road). All three structures are over 50 years old.” The closure is expected to last about six months, according to GDOT. Until
the new bridge is built and opened, northbound traffic will be diverted to Spout Springs Road while southbound traffic is diverted to Braselton Highway. GDOT is advising drivers that they will have to obey posted traffic speed limits

Jakarta floods leave dozens dead and 60,000 displaced Severe flooding in Jakarta that’s left swaths of the capital underwater has killed at least 30 people and forced tens of thousands to flee their homes, according to Indonesia’s disaster agency. Torrential rains have been pounding the greater Jakarta region since New Year’s Eve, causing 62,453 people to be evacuated to temporary shelters, the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management said in a statement Thursday. Most of the victims died in Bogor district and East Jakarta, the agency said. Among the dead, 17 were swept away by the floods, five were buried by landslides and five were electrocuted. Heavy rains are predicted to continue through Jan. 10, it added. Images from Jakarta’s greater metropolitan area, which is home to about 30 million people, showed residents wading through chesthigh flood waters. The flooding is the worst the city has seen in decades.

The Pentagon issued a strong warning to Iran-backed militias amid concerns they may conduct further provocations against the U.S. following their attempt to storm the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. “We are very confident that the integrity of that embassy is strong and it is highly unlikely to be physically overrun by any one, there is sufficient combat power there, air and ground, that anyone who attempts to overrun that will run into a buzz saw,” the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley, told reporters Thursday at the Pentagon. The U.S. recently reinforced the embassy in the Iraqi capital with a contingent of U.S. Marines and has deployed hundreds of additional troops to neighboring Kuwait that could be called upon if the situation deteriorates. Demonstrators appeared to attempt the embassy this week following U.S. airstrikes against a militia, Khatib Hizbollah, which while ostensibly part of the Iraqi security forces is seen by the U.S. as having close ties to Iran and the U.S. accuses them of conducting a series of rocket attacks against U.S.-Iraqi military facilities, one of which killed a U.S. citizen working as a contractor.

Google’s AI system can beat doctors at detecting breast cancer

Google says it has developed an artificial intelligence system that can detect the presence of breast cancer more accurately than doctors. A study that tested the accuracy of the system, which was developed through a collaboration between the tech giant and cancer researchers, was published Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature.
MUST READ The program was trained to detect cancer using tens of thousands of mammograms from women in the United Kingdom and the United States, and early research shows it can produce more accurate detection than human radiologists. According to the study, using the AI technology resulted in fewer false positives, where test results suggest cancer is present when
it isn’t, and false negatives, where an existing cancer goes undetected. Compared to human experts, the program reduced false positives by 5.7% for U.S. subjects and 1.2% for UK subjects. It reduced false negatives by 9.4% for U.S. subjects and 2.7% for UK subjects. The AI system was more accurate despite it having less information to work with than human experts, such as patient histories and
prior mammograms. A tart remedy for kidney stones

EAR DR. ROACH: My husband had a kidney stone, and the doctor used shock waves to clear it up. Now the doctor says he needs to take fresh lemon juice twice a day, all his life. None of the other men in the community center with Roach stones have been recommended lemon juice. We would like your opinion. — M.C. ANSWER: Lemon juice is tart because of its high concentration of citric acid. Citric acid is essentially turned into bicarbonate in the body, and the excess bicarbonate is excreted in the kidney. This raises the pH of the urine and makes it harder for both calcium stones and uric acid stones to form. Citric acid itself in the urine — what hasn’t been metabolized — binds to oxalate, preventing it from making calcium oxalate stones. The addition of citric acid is particularly helpful in people who have a diet with lower amounts of animal protein, so animal protein should be modest and plant protein emphasized in your husband’s diet. Potassium citrate tablets are commonly prescribed to people with recurrent kidney stones. However, lemon juice is also proven effective at reducing stone formation. Lime juice, orange juice and melon juice are other good sources of citric acid, but avoid grapefruit and cranberry juice, as they are high in oxalates. The potassium, found in both fruit and the tablet, is synergistic at reducing stone risk. Plenty of water is always important for any person with kidney stones. I do worry about the teeth in consuming very concentrated acid like lemon juice, so I usually prescribe the tablet, but 4 ounces of juice daily is certainly a reasonable option. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 71-year-old woman who’s physically active and of normal weight. I’m currently on 20 mg of simvastatin and have started taking aspirin, 81 mg three times a week. I have white coat hypertension with home blood pressure measurements around 125-130/80. I have no diabetes, and my cholesterol is 194 with HDL of 92 and LDL of 92. An incidental finding on a recent X-ray notes calcium on my aorta. Is further testing, such as a CT angiogram, warranted? — M.P. ANSWER: The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body, and calcium, which blocks Xrays, can be seen in large blood vessels. People with calcium in blood vessels are more likely to have plaque and blockages in those blood vessels. Healthy cholesterol levels do not rule out the possibility of coronary artery blockages. For a person with no symptoms but who is suspected to have blockages in the aorta or coronary vessels, the doctor generally has two options: do further diagnostic testing to increase the certainty of the diagnosis, or treat the patient medically as though she has coronary artery disease. That would mean prescribing a statin drug — more commonly a higher-potency drug like atorvastatin or rosuvastatin nowadays — and aspirin. Beta blockers and ACE inhibitors are also commonly used, but your blood pressure is nearly optimal as it is now. Still, many cardiologists would still use a low dose of a beta blocker like metoprolol. Since more aggressive therapies like surgery or angioplasty and stent placement are unlikely to have a beneficial effect on your life expectancy, proceeding with treatment as though you already had coronary disease makes a great deal of sense to me.

DEAR AMY: My father was physically abusive to me when I was a child, and emotionally abusive when I was a teenager. I’ve been depressed for most of my life, with no sense of self-worth. I confronted him when I was an adult. He tried to explain why he was that way, but he never apologized. Now he is 93, and in a nursing home. I would like to get closure by telling him how much his behavior damaged my life, but I know it would hurt him at the end of his life. Should I get the closure I have needed all of my life, or should I keep it to myself to spare his feelings? — Still Hurting DEAR HURTING: I think the movies have trained all of us to seek closure, and to expect satisfying endings. But life doesn’t really work that way. Your father does not know how to apologize. I would venture a guess that he himself was wounded, damaged, and emotionally stunted. It takes a brave person to confront their abuser. You could try to do this again and likely receive a similar,
unsatisfying result. Do not hope for closure. Work toward personal reconciliation. Acknowledge what happened to you. Choose to release yourself from the blame and shame. And, as you sit by your bad old dad’s bedside, ask yourself if forgiveness is possible. Forgiving him might liberate you. Also, see a counselor. Working this out with professional guidance will change your life. DEAR AMY: When did name-calling get so popular? (Oh, someone leading our country made it so. Rocket Man, Sleepy Joe, Crooked Hillary, to name a few.) Please do not condone “Boomer.” It is sounding as bad as the aforementioned monikers. Three days earlier, Clark had experienced contractions and went to the hospital. Clark wasn’t deemed ready for delivery and doctors eventually stopped her contractions and Clark went home later that day. She said at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning she was experiencing more painful contractions. Clark and Williams knew it was time to go back to the hospital. The road to delivery wasn’t without a minor obstacle. The couple left their home near Gainesville to head to Braselton when they had a sinking realization: Williams’ car showed they had 12 miles to go until their gas tank was empty.

building. The retirement community, if approved by Gwinnett officials, would include 14 four-story buildings with 22 units in each building. The density for the site would be 26.74 units per acre. The plans call for buildings designed in French provincial and English manor styles, among other building styles. There would be four units on the first floor of each building with six units on the second, third and fourth floors. The retirement community would only be independent living residents, meaning there would be no space set aside for memory care or assisted living patients. There would be an average of 1,136 square feet of heated space in each unit, which would include a full
kitchen, dining and living areas, an outdoor patio or balcony, bedrooms and bathrooms with walk-in showers. Carl was born August 31, 1932 in Tarrytown, Georgia. Since the current region alignments were set by the Georgia High School Association four years ago, the current Region 8-AAAAAAA has been among the premier boys basketball regions in the state.
While that alignment will be broken up when the GHSA realigns for the next two seasons beginning with the 202021 school year, 8-AAAAAAA is going out with a bang this season. Four teams currently reside in the Kyle Sandy/Georgia Sports Writers Association’s top 10, and will kick off the
new year with a huge matchup when No. 2 Shiloh (15-0, 2-0) visits top-ranked Grayson (13-1, 1-1) for a 7:30 p.m. scheduled tip time. “I think our region from top to bottom is probably the toughest region in the state regardless of classification, and I think it’s been like that for a while now,” said Grayson

Over its storied history, Collins Hill’s wrestling program has had plenty of individual wrestlers win 100 matches for their respective careers. However, it’s likely that Clint Gilbert and Powell Gilbert share circumstances to make them among the more unique members of the Eagles’ 100 club. For starters, there aren’t many sets of brothers to both reach that mark, but what makes the Gilberts’ achievement most unique is that they not only both reached the milestone on the same day, they also reached it
during the same round of the Knockout Christmas Classic in Kissimmee, Florida, on Dec. 28. “I was surprised,” said Powell Gilbert, the older of the two brothers as a senior, who reached 100 wins with a pin of Liam Martinez of Miami Palmetto in the second round of the 115-pound weight class last weekend. “I mean, it happened in the same round (of the tournament). We talked a little bit (on the way home) when it happened. … I guess it’s a big deal.” If Powell seems a little blasé about the accomplishment, it’s just a function of how easygoing both Gilbert brothers are. That’s just how they roll, according
to Eagles head coach Nate Ethridge, and it’s the reason he made sure nobody told either brother they were each approaching a milestone win until after they got there. “It’s funny because … getting pictures out of both of them was a huge deal,” Ethridge said. “We almost had to trick them into getting 100-win pictures out of both of them (after their wins). … Their mom knew that they would not want to (make a big deal of the milestone), so we tricked them with my daughter. … She kind of made them take the picture. Technically speaking, the 2019 Gwinnett County Wrestling Championships is occurring right about the midpoint of the 2019-20 high school wrestling season. But Nate Ethridge, coach of defending champion Collins Hill, takes a little different view of the this year’s tournament, which runs Friday and Saturday at Mill Creek High School. “It’s crazy because I’m used to a different time frame for the state tournaments,” said Ethridge, who posted 500 wins in Michigan before becoming the Eagles’ head coach last season. “I’m used to the end of the season, everything happens. With (Georgia), this weekend

tournament, which is why many of the top teams and individuals will be on the mat this weekend. After winning its first county title in a decade last year, Collins Hill figures to be among the teams to beat again, led by a number of favorites in several weight classes. Among that group includes Super Six selection Lucas DeSilva, who needs just one win in the tournament to break a tie with T.J. Mitchell for the school’s career wins record, currently at 213, as well as defending county champs Clint Gilbert and Elijah Griffin and other strong contenders like Joey Felix and Powell Gilbert. Providence Christian is in the market for a new head football coach to lead its young program. Parker Conley was told after the season that the Lilburn private school planned to go in a different direction. The 27-year-old led the Storm for the past three seasons. “I was informed following Thanksgiving break the administration wanted to move in a different direction with the football program,” Conley said. “They let me know they were going to move forward without me as the head guy. … I’m obviously disappointed. A lot of things didn’t work out, but I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. The plan is to continue coaching. I don’t know where I want to go or where that will be, but that is the plan.” Conley was an assistant varsity coach (and middle school head coach) at Providence for the 2016 season, when the team went 1-9 and won the first varsity game in school history. He was promoted to junior varsity head coach for 2017, but got an even bigger promotion prior to that season when the head varsity spot came open. When he was hired in March, 2017, he was 24 — the youngest varsity head football coach in the modern era of Gwinnett football. He went 1-9 in his first season as head coach, then established a new school wins record in 2018 with a 4-6 mark. His 2019 was beset by injuries and finished 2-8. “Since the announcement, I just really appreciated the love of the community,” Conley said. “There have been a lot of people, alumni, current students, current families
who have shared their appreciation. Ultimately, I understand God wants what’s best for me and what’s best for Providence as well. I can’t be frustrated beyond that. I understand there’s a plan in place.” Conley, a 2010 Norcross grad, played college football at Florida State, where he spent four seasons as a tight end, wide receiver and punter, was named scout team captain and won the national title in 2013. While he doesn’t know where he will coach football in 2020, Conley said he will teach the spring semester at Providence and will be an assistant baseball coach for Adam Cantrell. Beyond that, he said he would consider all options, and would enjoy stepping into an assistant coach role to gain more experience. With three years of head coaching experience as a 27-year-old, his career already has a nice resumé boost. “Even in my short time, in my three years, I feel like we left a legacy among my players that life is not always easy and football is not always easy, it’s how you fight,” Conley said. “I thought the boys really embodied that this year. Unfortunately, now I have to walk that walk with my coaching. … All I’ve heard from the boys is thank you for helping me with life, thank you for helping me become a better man. That my was goal from the beginning. “I have all the confidence in the world the next spot (for me) is going to be special. I’m so thankful for my assistant coaches who supported me and I’m especially thankful for me wife (former Buford and Georgia Tech softball player Karly Fullem Conley). She’s been a rock star and supported me in this process. Why I have confidence is because of her.”

Texans hoping for boost from Watt
GILBERT From B1 She was like, ‘Don’t your run away. You’re taking this picture.’ “They didn’t know (they weren’t approaching 100 wins each). We hid it from them. I always try to tell the parents when it’s getting close. … Clint does not like to be in the spotlight. He doesn’t like that kind of stuff. He’s kind of quiet. Powell, too. Powell doesn’t say a lot, doesn’t talk a lot. They’re different.” Those differences aren’t just limited to comparisons to other wrestlers. They also apply to each other despite being only a year apart in age. “They’re definitely two different animals,” Ethirdge said. “They could not be more different in all aspects. They’re two totally different wrestling styles completely. Clint’s real powerful, real athletic, real explosive. Clint’s just going to go for broke all the time, where Powell is very technical, very calculated, has really good mat awareness.” As good as they’ve been throughout their careers, there are several different factors that make the Gilbert brothers’ accomplishment to be particularly impressive. One is how relatively little time they’ve needed to get to the century mark. That Clint, a 2018 Class AAAAAAA state champion at 106 pounds and a state runner-up at 126 last year, has gotten to the mark in the middle of his junior season is reason enough to take notice. Add in the fact that he has gotten a late start to wrestling in both of his previous varsity seasons due to his role as a receiver in Collins Hill’s football program has given him even less time to amass wins. “Clint will flat out tell you (he) loves football (more than wrestling),” Ethridge said. “He wrestles, but he loves football. Clint is one of the most naturally gifted wrestlers that I’ve coached. He doesn’t train at times. He kind of wrestles when it’s not football season. So he’s something else.”

Don’t misunderstand Ethirdge when he refers to the limited time Clint puts in at practice. There is no questioning the junior’s work ethic, which is something he takes pride in, and looks to make the most out of every minute he’s in the wrestling room. “Basically, you just have to work hard when you have a limited amount of time,” said Clint Gilbert, a twotime first-team Daily Post All-County selection who is now 20-7 this season and whose career record now stands at 108-24. “You’ve got to work harder in the practice room.” Like his younger brother, Powell Gilbert has also had only 2 1/2 varsity seasons to amass his win total so far in his career, though
unlike Clint, it wasn’t because of football. Powell stepped away from wresting for a year during his sophomore season before being drawn back to the team by Ethridge when came in from Michigan to become head coach in 2018. “Coach Ethridge came in, (but) I was thinking about (coming back) anyway,” said Powell Gilbert, who is 26-4 on the season. “I mean, I’ve been wrestling for a long time. And my mom wanted (him and Clint) to wrestle together on the team.” Indeed, it was additional urging by Clint and their mother, Rhonda, that helped seal Powell’s return to the Eagles during his junior season a year ago. The time together has been particularly special to
Clint, who says that gaining the same accomplishment as Powell on the exact same day has only made the milestone that much more satisfying. “We always wanted to just finish high school on the same team,” said Clint Gilbert, who reached his 100th win with a secondround pin of Chase Chapdelanine of Winter Springs (Fla.) at 128 pounds. “That was the plan, so we both knew we had to do it. He (played football), and then he stopped playing. … He was always ahead of me in the grade level. “It’s been cool to travel (to tournaments together). It’s always a good time at the matches. The return of Houston defensive end J.J. Watt from the injured reserve list serves as the most noteworthy subplot in the Texans’ AFC wildcard game against the visiting Buffalo Bills, a fitting development considering the role both defenses will play on Saturday. Watt, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, missed the final eight games of the regular season with a torn pectoral muscle but returned to practice last week and was officially activated Tuesday. Watt will play his part for the AFC South champs even if the extent is undetermined. “He’s been serious, all business,” Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson said of Watt. “Been competing with us, with my cadence and with the right tackle, left tackle, wherever they place him. So, it’s been good to see him out there participating and back in the mix.” The Texans (10-6) will certainly welcome back Watt, even in a limited capacity. They have scuffled on defense this season, ranking 28th in total defense and 19th in points allowed — last among the AFC playoff teams. Houston tied for last in yards surrendered per play (6.1), a byproduct of an inability to pressure oppos-

For example, after Friday’s clash with Grayson, Shiloh has to turn right around Tuesday and travel to No. 6 Newton (13-3, 3-0), which handed the Rams their only loss of the season last month. Grayson will have a similar rugged stretch the following week with back-to-back home games with Newton and 10th-ranked Archer (115, 0-2), which despite its record has given the Rams and Shiloh everything they wanted in December games, and every remaining week of the season will seem to feature matchups of that magnitude. Even games against the region’s two unranked teams, South Gwinnett and Rockdale County, are no sure things, and Shiloh coach Kim Rivers thinks he knows why. “The one thing I will say is, our region has always had excellent coaching,” said Rivers, who has guided the Generals to their best start since the 2014-15 season, when they advanced to the state Final Four. “And with excellent coaching, you’re always going to keep yourself in it whether you have (lesser talent) or an outstanding group of kids. You’re going to be able to compete every night. “So I take nothing for granted. Even teams at the lowest point (in the standings) of our region on any given night can beat anybody.” Neither the Generals nor Rams should have any trouble being ready to play in their clash Friday. For one thing, the proximity of both schools to each other means that the players from each team know each other quite well. That includes one in particular, senior forward Toneari Lane, who transferred to Grayson this past summer after attending and playing for Shiloh the past two school years. “Now going into (the bulk of the) region (schedule), these kids know each other a lot better,” Rivers said.

Safety Jahleel Addae (Achilles) was also limited on Tuesday, but with Watt potentially able to wreak havoc, the Texans stand positioned to disrupt the timing of second-year Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who will make his first postseason start. Allen will be under scrutiny, but with Buffalo making just its second playoff appearance since 1999, the entire Bills roster will be under a microscope. “(We hope) that he keeps his consistent, routine-line approach,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said of Allen. “For our whole team, that’s important for us, that we continue to focus internally on what we’ve got to do and how we’ve got to do it in terms of what it’s going to take to win this game. “I think overall people try to exploit young players around the league, whether it’s quarterbacks or other players. So we’ve just got to have a good week of preparation and be focused.” Watson has the edge in postseason experience over Allen by one start, but he will undoubtedly face the more imposing defense on Saturday. “They’ve played against each other. We’ve got kids that transferred from one school to the next, and it’s a rivalry game. So it’s definitely going to be a lot more tension and anxiety for the players. But I think the kids are up to it. I’m just trying to get them to stay humble and stay hungry. That’s it.” While Grayson is the more known commodity both statewide and nationally, with a stacked lineup that includes five-star Mississippi State signee Deivon Smith and South Florida-bound, fourstar senior Caleb Murphy in the backcourt, Shiloh has its own dynamic duo of guards in Zawdie Jackson and Caleb Golden. Both squads have shown plenty of depth throughout the season, which should be a big plus because both teams also like to play endto-end basketball in a style that has been a trademark throughout the entire region. “It’s going to be huge,” Pierce said. “It’s going to be a war of attrition. I’m sure Kim’s done a good job with his offseason (conditioning), and I think we have, too. So it’s just going to come down to conditioning and will. “But like I said, (the season) is going to be marathon. Joel (Lecoeuvre’s team) plays that way over at Archer. They like to play fast, as well.” Pierce’s last point is one both coaches agree will be a big key heading into Friday’s game. While both expect each individual game among the region’s contenders to be more like a sprint, the race itself is more like a marathon, and both Rivers and Pierce are advising their respective teams not to get too caught up with Friday’s results for now. “I think the guys are focused on region play,” Rivers said. “They know how serious every game is in region.
