Yo Wiksas!

grow a human ;) I am sure all you moms can relate.

Well, it’s crunch time. I will be starting Maternity leave soon. That means I will be taking a year off from work to be have my baby and take care of him until this time next year. This does not mean I am leaving. It just means I am allowed allow to take a break to be with my newborn baby. As many of you may already know, we had a replacement set up for the time I will be taking off. Unfortunately for us, that person is no longer taking over. She had another opportunity come up. But we are happy py for her and wish her well on her career path she is taking. The Elder’s Council will be meeting more this month to come up with a plan for my replacement. Please stay tuned for more updates. TRI-BAND ELDER’S THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON WEDNESDAY OCT.11/17 @ 12PM WAKAS HALL

Elder’s Health & Safety Program: What is it? It is a Program that was created by Leslie Walkus. Leslie had done a proposal to our GNN Trust for a grant. The Community voted and approved the funds for the new Program. Who is it for? It is for all Elder’s on the Gwa’sala Gwa’sala‘Nakwaxda’xw Elder’s List. That original list was given to me by late Bunny Jackson. Since I started in 2010 as the Elder’s Coordinator, I have been adding the newly become elders to this list: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

The Elder’s will more than likely join in on the Community Halloween activities this year. My mobility, strength and energy capacity is not what it normally is, due to my pregnancy. It takes a lot out of you to

How do I access funds from Health & Safety? If you have an appointment down island, you would bring the same note you would to Christy, down to Leslie or Silena at the Elder’s Centre at least a week in advance. Otherwise you might have to wait until you get back. If you have an eye appointment, you would just let the receptionist know that you are an Elder from GNN. Then they call us to make sure you are eligible for funds. If you require new glasses, that is determined weather or not if you have used up all of your funding or not. If you need hearing aids, dentures or a walker and have been denied by First Nations Health Authority and no other funds are available to you from any other departments or Programs, then we would ask for you to have the business you are dealing with to email us a copy of your invoice for the equipment you are needing. This funding also helps with the costs of prescriptions as well. As many of you may know, First Nations Health Yo! News

Non-insured Health Benefits have now changed over to Pharmacare. That means, if you are taking a medication and it is no longer covered. You should ask your doctor for alternatives to that medication, and be sure that you are no allergic to it. If you are having issues with the new medication that is taking over the one that is not covered, then this is where Elder’s Health & Safety comes in. You would simply pay up front for your prescription, keep your receipt, and hand it into Leslie Walkus at the GNN Elder’s Centre. If you need safety rails, tiles on your stairs outside or chimney cleaned, this is when you would call Silena or Leslie at the Elder’s Centre 949-7406. Then we would set it up so we can have it done for you. Please note: that you can not hire someone and then send them to the Elder’s Centre for payment. The Committee has already agreed on hiring someone to do the small jobs for the Program. Thank you What is the GNN Elder’s Program? The Elder’s Program was started up back in the early 90’s by Bunny Jackson. She started fundraising and taking Elders on trips all over BC to the Elder’s Conference. Willie Walkus was hired as a helper to help with the Elders, as he was not yet an Elder when it all began.

Once Bunny decided it was time to move on, Willie took the position as Elder’s Coordinator. In February 2010 I, Silena George, was hired as Willie’s assistant. It was about four months later, that Willie had left for another position up at the Health & Family Services. Then it was expressed by the GNN Elders that they wanted me to move into the position of Elder’s Coordinator. By July 2010, I was promoted the position of GNN Elder’s Coordinator. Due to funding changes in 2016, my position had been rebuilt and renamed Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Elder’s Program Administrator. The Elder’s Program has been receiving funding each year from the GNN Trust by submitting Grant Proposals. In order to be considered for more funding, we had to submit a detailed funding report to the GNN Trust Committee. We have been doing this since 2011. The Elder’s Program was always praised for the well organized funding reports we submit every quarter to the GNN Trust Committee. For they are the ones that review it and approve us for the next year of funding. The GNN Elder’s Program has blossomed a lot since I started back in 2010. It makes my heart happy in seeing all the great opportunities and memories the Elders have been making. October 6 / 2017

My job as the Elder’s Program Administrator is the same as being a Manager of any other Program. There are many responsibilities that come with this particular position. The duties include: data entry, accounting, written reports, finance reports, emailing, shopping for lunches & catering, cooking, supervising hired helpers, traditional foods harvesting, traditional foods processing, coordinating events and meetings with various Programs and other organizations, special occasion planning, trip planning, budgeting, problem solving, knowing how to communicate with different people, handling stressful situations in a professional manner, late night phone calls or text messages, Administration for Elder’s Council; carry out ideas and decisions made by the Elder’s Council, working closely with other staff on projects, mail, make sure the Centre has all supplies needed (cleaning, toiletry, etc), and the list goes on. This Program is very unique. It has come a long way from where it was when I first started. I can’t wait to see what more becomes of it in the future.

That is all for now folks. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do call me or come and see me at the Elder’s Centre. I will put coffee on and we can sit and chat. Gilakasla, Silena George GNN Elder’s Program Administrator (250) 949-7406

PS. There was some cleaning supplies that went missing from the cleaning supply room on Wednesday Oct.4. May I remind you that those cost the Program money and there are cameras set up in the Centre. For your information.

Yo Wiksas, We are pleased to report to our community that K'awat'si Marine Services had a very successful, profitable summer. Over the past months the company has undergone positive change. July welcomed new Manager Eddie Walkus. Eddie is looking forward to learning the ropes while being mentored by previous manager Cyndi Browne. During Cyndi's time with K'awat'si Marine she has played a very productive role and continues to strive for our company to ensure a prosperous future. K'awat'si Marine Services are currently operating three crew vessels full time. Our company continues to build a strong work relationship with Marine Harvest, K'awat'si Tours, Aquaculture (Shellfish Farm), Duval Point Lodge & Lemare Lake Logging with daily and weekly runs. Being full time boat operators, Adam Munn and Wes Walkus contribute tremendously to our company while working alongside Eddie. During the summer months K'awat'si Marine Services had the pleasure to work with K'awat'si Tours organizing many Marine Wildlife and Nakwakto tours. Together they visited the Gwa'sala'Nakwaxda'xw homelands multiple times per week. During visits home Davis Henderson and his tourism team, Thomas Coon and Walter Brown, shared stories with guests about history of the land and our people. K'awat'si Marine Services has a bright future. We will continue to thrive as a team and work together to achieve success.
