This Program goes hand in hand with the Restorative Justice and Peacemaking Circle training certificates I received earlier in March.

I look forward to providing more services not only to the Elder's Program, but to the community as whole. Repairing relationships is definitely something we could work on together in our community.

Yo Wiksas? Happy beginning of Spring everybody. I hope you are all doing well. As many of you may already have known, I was off for most of the last week in March. I returned back to work on Thursday, March 30th. The Elders attended a Ninogad with the Communications department up at the Family unit. This week, we had Genesis Hunt & Terri Wells from Campbell River come up and do a week long intensive Healthy Relationships Facilitators Course.

I have started the sign up sheet for the Elder's Conference, July 10-14, 2017. We will be staying in Nanaimo and traveling back and forth each day. We do have a bus booked already. I do need concrete numbers for registration, as registration is a lot more costly this year. So an accurate number of our group is required.

I would like to thank Cathy Swain for cooking lunch for the Elders on Wednesday. The soup was delicious, as was the crumb cake. Thank you Richard for the fruit salad.

We originally had 12 people registered. By the time Monday morning came around, we had 3. That is better than none.

Thank you to the Lands & Resources crew for coming and helping serve the elders. That was a pleasure for the Elders. Thank you of that Erin.

We prodeeded to start Tuesday morning. We had an Elder and a community member come in and check it out. Unfortunately we did not start that day.

I hope you all enjoyed the weekend.

We completed the facilitators training and are now Certified in Healthy Relationship facilitation. What is Healthy Relationships?

Silena George,

It is a program that can be implemented in any type of relationships. It could be at home with your family or spouse, at work with staff, or other positions that require you to build on communication and healthy relationships.

Treaty Update On Projects Gila’kasla, For those that don’t know me I’m Thomas Kervin. My mother was Doreen Green and her was mother Doreen Green Sr.;there’s strong family ties bringing me back. It was an honor to work for the community – and continue to help anywhere I’m needed. That said, it was a good few months of working hard, rolling up our sleeves, and getting our projects done. Our first project was to develop a Governance Policy in relation to self-government under Treaty and a governance manual to go along with it. Thanks to the smart, and hard work of Sharlene Frank from K’omoks First Nation and Scott Graham of Social Planning and Research Council of BC (SPARC BC),we were able to finish on time and within budget. Most important, yet, we were able to make official governance policies that will serve the community. The aim of the project was to inform new councillors of how and why they should conduct themselves as council members and it’s a way to show thoserunning for Council the real meaning of what a councillor does – serve our community. It’s a way to show newly elected councillors day-to-day duties and job description. The documents not only steers our councillors in the right direction, but it also calls on them stay accountable to our people. Our second project, as most of you already know, was to set up a communications department. We were able to have fun, but also serious discussions with our youth and Elders about how they wanted to receive community news. Then, we conducted a short survey (more to come in the future, by the way). We learned howeveryone wanted to receive information about treaty, trust and the administration. In order to complete the work, the communications department received training in a variety of areas including facilitation, planning, and more. Training was provided by Melissa Quocksister of Quocksister Consulting. With the information that was collected, the Communications Department developed a Communications Strategy complete with an action plan.. The communications strategy will guide us in how we should communicate with the community. This includesconsistent, timely newsletters, regular updates to the website, weekly and monthly e-mails. We plan to roll the plan out starting in April 2017. At this time, we’d like to thank community membersfor your input. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at the band office in-person orby phone at 250 949 8343. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. - Thomas
