Yo Wiksas! This month has been very busy. We have had numerous info sessions for the Hi'li'gam (Trust) and our chairman, Leslie Walkus. For those of you that did not get the notice with all the info session dates, the next one will be next Thursday Feb.16 @ 4:30pm. Please keep in mind that the same information is shared at the 5 information sessions. There are multiple sessions so that as many people can attend which ever session best suites their schedule. Don't forget, the more times you show up for an information session, your name is entered each time for a chance to win the $500 gift card for Save On Foods. FREE GROCERIES! WAHOO! The Elders have been keeping active these last two weeks. On Friday Feb. 3 they attend a traditional foods lunch up at the G&N School with the grade 7s. There was such a great turn out, that K'odi, Reed and I decided to make this a monthly occurrence. So the Elders will get an extra lunch each month and share it with the Grade 7 students. The next one will be a language revitalizing setting, where everyone will be encouraged to only speak kwak'wala/bakwamgala. This is exciting! Weekly luncheons have been taking place. That is where I have asked the Elders what they would like to do in light of Valentines Day, Tuesday Feb 14 @ 12pm The Elders will be having a Valentines day lunch. There will be a very nice spread of food and a little gift for each Elder (over 60) to take home with them. We will also watch a romantic film of your choice. There will still be the regular Elder's luncheon the next day, Wednesday Feb.15 at 12pm as well. Door prizes to be won here this day as well. As many of you may know, Caribou Legs came to our community. This was such a great celebration for us to

experience. There were at least 15 Elders that made it up to the school, where the children put on a dance performance and Caribou Legs made a speech about what he was running for. There was a luncheon held by the community for him as well. The Elder's Program has been very steady with catering and rentals of the meeting space. Reports are due soon for the Hi'li'gam and the Program will receive funds for the second portion of last year's grant. We will also be able to submit a new proposal for the second half of 2017. With there being 60 Elders the age of 60 and up, we need to make some adjustments to these proposals. That is amazing! 60 aged 60 years plus. Friday Feb. 10 Wade & Carly will be hosting the Elder's Winter Wellness Day at the Wakas hall. We are excited to see what the day has brought. Over the last month there have been some great teamwork and relationship building with other staff and the Elders. This is fantastic! Let's keep this up, shall we? If you have any ideas that you or your program would like to coordinate with the Elders, please do not hesitate to call me at (250) 949-7406, or email me at silena1314@gmail.com. I would love to work together for our Elders/community. Remember: If you have any yard work or safety fixtures (railings in your bathroom or by your bed side) that you need at home, please contact me. I sit on the Elder's Health & Safety committee as well. We will work together and make this happen for you. Gilakasla, Silena George Elder's Program Administrator (250) 949 7406 silena1314@gmail.com

Membership Clerk UPDATE:

Hello Gwa’sala-“Nakwaxda’xw Nation! I am very happy to say working as the membership clerk has been successful! I know I still have a lot to learn, getting more in to the job I have managed to get babies registered and I have gotten in status cards for the community, always great to see everyone happy to receive a status card, I hope to keep them coming in for our community. Please remember once I have phoned you about your status card being done to pick up right away. No one can pick up the status card for you. Why?? Because I need your signature on the card before I laminate it, then once all cards are picked up I can send out all my paper work to get more. It cost $5.00 for G-N Members and $20 for non Band Members. Again I have attached what is needed to get status cards on the next page. I will let the community know when more status cards have come in, also I make appointments only there is no list to be put on, I work in the membership office Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, Some days my schedule will change. If you are looking into getting the newest SCIS Card that last for 10years, you can get the forms online www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca , if you would like any help with filling out the forms you can give me a call and I will be glad to help you. To register your baby please make sure mom and dad’s name are on the Birth certificate, I need the original birth certificate to send off with the registry forms. Any questions you can give me a call  Thank you Bernadine Clayton Receptionist/ IRA (250) 949-8343

Message from the Lands and Resources Office We would like to give a sincere thank you to everyone who applied to the LRO positions for this year! We shortlisted a great selection of candidates, and we were impressed by the calibre and professionalism of GNN members. You all should feel proud of yourselves! Unfortunately, there were too few positions for everyone applying, but we will keep resumes on file.Do not be deterred from re-applying in the future!

Here are some tips for future positions, in GNN or elsewhere: 1) Once you have your resume completed, take the time to ask for feedback from others – there is always room for polishing! NIEFS and NVIATS are great resources. 2) If you get a call back for an interview – it is important toshow the employer that you take the interview seriously!:  ***Rule #1: DON’T MISS THE INTERVIEW!If you have a valid reason, the important thing is to communicate the issue ASAP to the employer – before your interview is scheduled. It will not look good if you do not respect the employer’s time.  Arrive at least five minutes early, and wear your best clothes! Show that you can be on-time and that you know how to dress appropriately for an occasion.  And most importantly, prepare! Prepare for common interview questions – you need to impress your employer. Show that you want the job, that you’re excited for it, that you’ve learned what it is and what you will be doing!, and that you have developed and learned from past jobs and work experience…(Google ‘preparing for interviews’ – or try https://careerservices.princeton.edu/undergraduate-students/interviews-offers/preparing-interviews) o For example: When you’re asked to explain why you want a certain job, don’t say – “Because I need a money.” It’s better to say, “My short term goals are to find employment, which will provide me with some valuable work experience and skills, as well assome stability and security. This will then help my long-term goals of finding a career that I enjoy.”  Find volunteer experience that may help you transition to a job  Focus your job and career interests – talk with professionals about how to make your dreams a reality! Find free or cheap online courses. Figure out what it takes!  Look to NVIATS or NIEFS at Thunderbird Mall or elsewhere, and take your training and work experience to the next level.
