Puma mauls three-year-old girl

A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl was mauled by a puma yesterday, leaving her in an unconscious condition. The badly wounded child, named Jasmine Joseph, is from Isseneru Village in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) and was near her home, about 08:00 hrs, when the animal dragged her some 60 feet into the bush.

Fortunately, she was rescued by persons who heard her screams and shot the attacker dead. She, however, suffered severe injuries to her head and face as a result of the vicious attack. Plans were being made for the injured girl to be air-dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on yesterday afternoon. (Alex Wayne)

GUYANA CHRONICLE Saturday December 28, 2013

Public Works Ministry completes demolition of BM Soat ‘illegal’ refuses to give up gov’t structures - As businessman reserve as per court order By Leroy Smith PUBLIC Works Ministry workers using an excavator yesterday demolished a fence and two concrete structures that were alleged to have been illegally erected at the BM Soat Auto Sales show yard at Success, East Coast Demerara. The demolition came three days after that ministry had signalled its intention to destroy the structures consequent upon the Government of Guyana, through the Works Ministry, winning judgement in the High Court in a matter involving ownership of a particular piece of land contended by the auto sales dealer, and the High Court specifically instructing the auto sales dealer to demolish the fence and all other objects or structures which sit on Government’s reserves and are preventing the Works Ministry from proceeding with its road expansion project. The Works Ministry had moved last Tuesday to effect demolition of the impeding structures, including the fence; but the auto sales dealer had stymied the move by parking brand new vehicles in such a strategic way along the fence as to prevent the Works Ministry machinery from going into action. Nevertheless, Works Ministry personnel, under direction of their senior operatives and accompanied by a heavy police presence, returned to the scene

A portable AC Unit is carried from the building which is being demolished yesterday and began demolishing the fence and two structures -- an ice cream parlour and an office -- used by the auto sales dealer. The directors and employees of the auto sales company were on hand to witness the demolition exercise, and several derogatory remarks were hurled at and about the Works Ministry, the incumbent minister and the Government of Guyana.

The son of the business owner related to the media that the family is in possession of a transport that awarded them the land which the ministry is now considering Government’s reserve. The man said that when Government re-designed the plan along the East Coast highway after coming up with the idea to have the road extended to a four-lane highway, that re-designed plan took in 14 feet

of the auto company owner’s property, hence the contention and controversy. The young man said that when the Works Ministry won the judgement in the High Court, Government moved on Tuesday to demolish the fence; but after the family had been served with the court order, he presented the family’s transport to the court to prove that what the Government was claiming as its reserve was in fact property that had been transported to his father. As to the family’s subsequent moves, the man said they will continue to fight the issue in the court, since they have transport for the land that the government is claiming as its reserve. As the Works Ministry team moved to execute the court order yesterday, the auto dealer’s workers busied themselves in removing items from the structures which housed the sales office and an ice cream parlour.

‘HAUL YOUR ASS’ – Ramjattan tells Minister Ali

- Minister lashes back demanding public apology …says Ramjattan’s behaviour is ‘disgusting, lawless and an abuse of power’ HOUSING and Water Minister Mr Irfaan Ali, having taken umbrage at the Christmas Day Kaieteur News Headline: ‘Eccles to Providence hijacked by private developers’, presented the media with the facts of the case at a press conference held yesterday. Alliance For Change (AFC) leader Mr Khemraj Ramjattan had told the Kaieteur News that hundreds of acres of land in central areas on the East Bank of Demerara had been distributed to a number of private developers in what appeared to be very unclear circumstances. Minister Ali consequently invited Ramjattan, via email, to yesterday’s press conference;

but when the minister’s secretary called to remind Ramjattan about the press conference, she was told: “How can that ‘chap’ demand me to come to his press conference? Tell him to haul his ass!” The Housing Minister said he had been affording Ramjattan the opportunity to publicly ask as many questions as he wanted before the press. “This is a man who talks about being upright, morally straight; and this is the way he speaks to an ordinary public servant who was merely doing her duties. I find this to be disgusting, lawless, and an abuse of power by Mr. Ramjattan,” Minister Ali declared. “This is a man who speaks

about transparency, openness, accountability and about professionalism; and this is the way he responds. He can tell me to ‘haul my ass’, I am a politician; but do not ever believe that you can humiliate a professional public servant who sits in my office and disrespect her the way he did. And I am calling for him to offer a public apology for the disrespect of this public servant! Nothing short of a public apology (will suffice),” the minister remarked. The minister then proceeded to answer questions that were posed in the Kaieteur News article. Below are the questions/ statements, and the minister’s response: Q: How much was paid for those lands by the private developers? A: The first phase of the development on the East Bank saw us moving into unchartered territory. The land was swamped, overgrown, trenches, etc. The

Khemraj Ramjattan first phase of development saw investment in these swamplands from both the public and private sectors. The cost of land in the first phase ranged between four and six million dollars, plus infrastructural costs per acre. The average investment for service (per) acre of land is between ten to fifteen million of investment by the private sector. Q: Where was it advertised, and was it advertised? A: Contrary to the manipulation of the truth by Kaieteur News and Mr. Ramjattan, who seems to have a special likeness with fondling of the truth, the first phase of development was advertised on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 in the Guyana Chronicle, titled, “Invitation for Expression of Interest for housing development at the proposed Eccles to Mocha Housing Development Site, East Bank Demerara.” A total of 14 proposals (was) received. Q: What criteria were used to grant these lands to these companies and individuals? A: The eligibility criteria were outlined in the expression of interest and the framework through which the proposals were to be submitted. The complete criteria and framework were outlined in the said advertisement, and the proposals were all examined and evaluated within the context of these criteria. So there were laid out prescribed criteria and eligibility, and that is in the context in which all the proposals were examined. There is also the perception in the article that most of the lots between Eccles and Providence did not go to normal house lots. Q: Why was it not available for normal house lots? A: The policy for our housing programme is based on the development of many partnerships. In our previous press

Floods kill dozens in south-east Brazil (BBC News) MORE than 40 people have died following weeks of torrential rain in the south-eastern Brazilian states of Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais. The downpours have been described as the worst to hit Espirito Santo in 90 years. About 70,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. Troops have been deployed to help distribute food, water and medicine to areas cut off by flooding and landslides and to repair roads. ‘Rebuild the state’ “We are going to have to

rebuild the state,” Espirito Santo State Governor Renato Casagrande said referring to the extensive damage caused to bridges and roads. President Dilma Rousseff interrupted her Christmas break to fly to her home state of Minas Gerais to survey the damage. Residents of the city of Governador Valadares blocked a major highway on Thursday night demanding the federal government offer more help in the wake of the destruction. On Tuesday, President Rousseff pledged millions of dollars in federal aid to help rebuild the area. The sun came out on Friday

in Vitoria, the state capital of Espirito Santo state and one of the worst affected areas, for the first time since 10 December. The military is taking advantage of the break in the weather to deliver aid by helicopter. Seven thousand people are believed to be cut off in the municipality of Baixo Guandu in the Doce river valley alone. Flooding is common in south-east Brazil during the rainy season. In 2011, more than 800 people were killed in floods in what officials said was the worst natural disaster ever to befall Brazil.

- PM mourns with Caribbean neighbours Prime Minister Dr after heavy rains take lives KennySt Lucia Anthony told nationals (The Gleaner) PRIME Minister Portia Simpson has pledged Jamaica’s support to its neighbours in sections of the Eastern Caribbean, after heavy rains led to several deaths, flooding and destruction of property on the eve of Christmas. The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) said yesterday that initial reports numbered the dead at around a dozen, with massive infrastructure damage in the most affected islands - St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica. Electrici-

ty and other services were being gradually restored to parts of St Lucia less than 24 hours after the heavy rains. Simpson Miller said the effect of the floods was heightened in light of its timing during the holidays, as families had gathered to celebrate the season of goodwill. “Please accept my best wishes and the support of the Government and people of Jamaica as you commence the daunting task of clean-up, rehabilitation and reconstruction,” she said in a statement yesterday.

he could not “recall when we have had such heavy rainfall on the eve of Christmas”. The St Lucia Air and Sea Ports said that the Hewanorra International Airport, south of the capital, Castries, remained closed and that crews were working tirelessly to have the airport reopened as soon as possible. The St Lucia Electricity Services Limited also reported it had restored power to “nearly all areas that had been affected by outages resulting from the heavy rains and severe lightning”.

Despite GPL assurances, Essequibo blackout woes continue Editorial

Is there a rekindling of the Cold War? EVEN though the Cold War has ended, it appears that the objectives of the West during that era have not changed and what is unfolding in The Ukraine supports this view; because the EU supported by the US has unleashed a covert and overt campaign to prevent that country from establishing closer ties with Russia and to have it in the orbit of the West. And we know why. In his article, “The Battle for Ukraine”, Stephen Lendman points out: “Ukraine matters. It’s strategically located and it’s in Europe’s geographic centre, and it borders seven countries. After Western/Central Russia, it’s Europe’s largest country territorially. It’s resource rich.” Former US National Security Adviser Zbgniew Brezinksky once said: “Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be an empire; but with Ukraine suborned and then subordinated, Russia automatically becomes an empire.” According to Lendman, “If Ukraine allies with Western Europe, Moscow would be significantly weakened geopolitically. The battle for Ukraine continues. Washington’s dirty hands are involved. Young militants were recruited and were paid to protest. Radical nationalists joined them. Ukraine’s future is at stake.” This, of course, is an old familiar script, especially during the official Cold War days. In the 1960s, we experienced this scenario right here in Guyana and so many other countries did as the US and its allies strove to protect “their interests” and to “save the world from communism and preserve democracy.” During that time, the US’s various agencies including the CIA in collaboration with their local allies covertly and overtly fomented a political crisis through terror, sabotage and strikes aimed at removing the PPP government led by Dr Cheddi Jagan. However, there’s been a worrisome development involving the government and the US Ambassador here in which the latter has made it clear that regardless of whether the former agrees with a project about strengthening the capacity of parliamentarians and improving the functioning of Parliament, it will be implemented. The government explained that its objection to the project was based on the fact that it was not involved in its formulation. The US Ambassador responded that the government was engaged for a long period with respect to the project. The Ambassador should know only too well that being engaged is much different from having an input into the formulation of a project. What the Ambassador’s position amounts to is, it’s the US way or no other. It is like going to someone’s house and dictating how it should be arranged and what should be cooked, etc. This sort of behaviour borders on interference in our internal affairs and a violation of our sovereignty which cannot be tolerated. Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, has made it clear that the behaviour of the Ambassador could have serious consequences. “At this stage the issue is the US Ambassador’s apparent contempt for the Cabinet of Guyana, an act that

ON Wednesday December 17, 2013, GPL’s personnel relations officer (PRO) assured Essequibians that there will be no more blackouts for the season as maintenance is finished and the outrages experienced recently was due to bad weather. The said day this article was published in the Stabbroek News, there were three blackouts, one at 10.30 am lasting until 1.00 p.m then went off and resumed at 3.45 pm; came off again at 10.30 pm in the night until morning. On Sunday, December 22, 2013, at about 8.30 am the blackout came back again and lasted until 8.30 pm in the night, crippling the entire Essequibo Coast. This time there was no bad weather or heavy

winds; all the businesses and petrol stations went down, because the fuel pumps depend on electricity from the plant which offers a crummy power supply and gets away with murder. GPL at Anna Regina has not made any strides; the company as a whole has many barriers to progress. Perhaps, the most serious impediment is the huge amount of blackouts for this year which we in Essequibo face. While it is true that GPL and the Wartsilla power plants are facing a full range of unprecedented challenges and a desperate time,GPL will not get far without the assistance of skilled and professional engineers. The best prescription for economic slowdowns is to throw money

in GPL; every megawatt of power lost creates unstable economic growth, and Region 2 depends on GPL’s ability to turn to sustainable and competitive energy. Years of no maintenance to these Wartsilla engines and damage now pose a real and immediate threat to the future of GPL’s energy stability. The fact is, the power company has been producing less electricity than it’s been producing for years now. Not only has demand been soaring for more electricity because of the many new housing schemes, the region’s growing economic prosperity will take a lot more energy from every possible source. The energy industry needs to get more

from existing sources while continuing to search for new reserves. GPL must continue to improve power efficiency and government needs to create energy policies that promote economically and environmentally sound development. Consumers must demand and be willing to pay for some of these solutions, while practising conservation efforts on their own. Inaction is not an option. But if everyone works together, we can balance the equation. We’re taking some of the steps needed to get started, but we need GPL’s help to get the rest of the way. MOHAMED KHAN

Road obstruction at Bath Settlement is a severe problem I AM a truck owner and do transportation for people in Bath Settlement on Fridays. The road is always congested with shoppers and sellers on both sides of the road. Next to the market road, a bridge construction was going on and it took sometimes 15 to 20 minutes to pass through. There is a newly constructed market tarmac. I understand these people plying their trade there have refused to go and sell there; since it was constructed all I know it

is used for is for keeping political meetings etc. I spoke to the regional chairman. He said he cannot do any-

thing if the people don’t want to move. He should resign and let the previous chairman return.

could have serious repercussions. He has been reported in the press to have instructed that Cabinet’s disapproval be ignored. The US Ambassador is playing with words as regards consultation. I will contend Guyana was not consulted. The project was conceived by the American authorities. The project funded by[the] US Congress. A bid was tendered, the US organisation, International Republican Institute, won that bid and was awarded the contract to implement the project. It was subsequent to those actions by the American authorities that the US Ambassador approached the Government of Guyana,” Dr Luncheon revealed. He added that the government was presented with a fait accompli and described it as a “dangerous proposition.” The world has changed, but the US foreign policy seems to be stuck in a Cold War mode and the inevitable question that arises is whether there has been a rekindling of the Cold War by the US and its allies. The answer seems to be yes.

All over the place there is obstruction in Region 5 on the roadsides and small streets. There are old vehicles and shops on the reserve. I had to take a load of dirt for an aged couple. The truck cannot go to discharge it in front of the people because there are old vehicles and shops on the street. These people had to pay people to take it from where I

discharged it to their place. It is very unfair. Minister Whittaker is all over the place removing people but nothing is being done at Bath Settlement and surrounding villages. Two years ago the chairman said we will get garbage collectors, but this has not materialised as yet. S. PERSAUD

COMMENTARY By David De Groot

THIS commentary is the personal expressions of the writer and must not be interpreted as those of the PPP/C and/or the ruling administration. Having cleared the air, let me say happy riddance to Ambassador Brendt Hardt. From the very beginning of his much too long sojourn in our country, the American diplomat has been guilty of attempting to dabble in

our domestic/political affairs. He has abandoned diplomacy and ignored the long cherished and traditional protocol internationally established and faithfully observed by all serving diplomats stationed in host countries. The current absurdity being displayed by Ambassador Hardt in stating (according to Stabroek News) that he is disregarding the decision of cabinet not to approve

a dubious project on a vague idea of agreement with local politicians and improvements of current governance is most unpalatable. Indeed, Dr. Luncheon is correct in describing the action of Mr Hardt as an affront to Guyana’s sovereignty and “greatest disrespect and abuse of his diplomatic presence”. In plain words, his presence in Guyana is unacceptable, happy riddance.

DREADFUL NEWS The dead man‘s mother, Savitree (only name given), who was in shock on hearing the dreadful news, said her son had left her home around 10:00 hrs and told her he would be back just now. She said it is hard to believe those were his last words to her. The devastated woman, who has another son and a daughter in the United States, said she had already baked Christmas cake for her children and was about to bake a chicken when she received the shocking news of her son’s tragic death. She said all her Christmas plans are now shattered like a broken mirror which cannot be picked up. Her son was a carpenter contractor, like his father, and a married father of a little boy who would have celebrated his first birthday on Boxing Day. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Unlicensed driver granted $500,000 PPP extends condolences bail for causing death of Chief Librarian on passing of Richard Hart By Geeta Rampersaud

TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD miner Odida Underwood was ordered to post $500,000 bail yesterday, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry charged with causing the death of Chief Librarian of the National Library, Gillian Thompson, on Christmas Eve day. The defendant, of Lot 197 Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge that said, on Tuesday, December 24, at North Road and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, he drove motor car PPP 8655 in a dangerous manner resulting in the woman’s death. He faces three other charges and pleaded guilty to all, which said, on the same day, he drove the same vehicle without being the holder of a driver’s licence, the vehicle was not covered for third party risk and he had taken and driven it away without the consent of the owner. Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the Court that, around 14:15 hrs, the defendant was the driver of the motor vehicle on the western side of Shiv Chanderpaul Drive and failed to stop at the intersection and, as a result collided with a motor van. The prosecutor said, as a result, the van hit the concrete culvert and Thompson, who was seated in the left front seat of the vehicle, suffered injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.

THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) extends its deepest condolences to the relatives and friends of the late Richart Hart who passed away in the United Kingdom at the advanced age of ninety-six on December 21, 2013. Hart was a close friend of Dr. Jagan and the PPP and played a key role in the rise of trade union militancy not only in his country Jamaica but in the Caribbean as a whole. Indeed, Hart was one of the guiding lights in the struggle for national liberation and from the clutches of imperialist domination in the region, the PPP noted in a statement yesterday. He became a natural ally of Dr. Jagan and the PPP and one of those Caribbean luminaries in the working class struggle who inspired Dr. Jagan in the struggle for national liberation and for a better quality of life for the Guyanese people and for that matter for the Caribbean working class as a whole. Hart’s relationship with Dr. Jagan started even before the formation of the PPP. During a meeting of the West Indian Conference at the Georgetown Town Hall in 1945, Dr. Jagan met for the first time persons whom he described as “stalwarts whom he admired” among whom was Richard Hart and Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow. Out that meeting was born the Caribbean Labour Congress in 1946 of which he served as its General Secretary. In the same year the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) was formed with founding leaders Cheddi Jagan, Janet Jagan, HJM Hubbard and Ashton Chase. The PAC was aimed at raising the political and ideological consciousness of the Guyanese working class. Those were the days when the Cold War was raging intensely and several progressives and leftists, inculding Dr. Jagan and Richard Hart became targets of the anti-communist witchhunt. Buckling under pressure from the United States, several Caribbean leaders conspired to have Hart removed as General Secretary of the Caribbean Labour Congress in 1950 because of his militancy and pro-labour stance. Ironically, it was under the Norman Manley leadership of the 1951-52 period that saw the Jamaica leftist-led TUC being forced to withdraw from the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) and the expulsion of left-wingers, the so-called 4-H’s (Richard Hart, Ken Hill, Frank Hill and Arthur Henry). In addition, under the leadership of both Norman Manley and Grantley Adams the militant leftist Caribbean Labour Congress (CLC) of which leftists Richard Hart was General Secretary and Billy Strachan was Secretary (London Branch) was disbanded. As noted by Dr. Cheddi Jagan in his book ‘The Caribbean: Whose Backyard?’ the betrayal of the Caribbean national liberation movement was fully demonstrated during the 1953 crisis in British Guiana when the social democratic leadership applauded the bipartisan imperialist policies and actions of both the Labour and Conservative parties in Britain. Incidentally, it was during the same period the PPP was formed with Cheddi Jagan as Party Leader and Janet Jagan as General Secretary. After the PPP was re-elected in the elections of 1962, Hart was invited by Dr. Jagan to edit the Party’s newspaper, the Mirror which he did until 1965. The PPP, as is well known, was engineered out of office by Anglo-American vested interests in the 1964 elections because of its pro-working class leaning. The PPP said Hart has undoubtedly made his mark on the political and trade union landscape in the Caribbean for which he will be long remembered. In addition to his role as a trade unionist/politician, Hart was also a prolific writer and the author of several books. May his soul rest in peace!

THREE men appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday to answer a robbery under arms charge. Howard Rambharose, 21, of Lot 6 Meadow Bank; Rajesh Singh of Lot 212 Laing Avenue and Alastair Naughton, of Phase Two, East La Penitence, all of Georgetown, were not required to plead to the charge that said on Friday, December 20, also in the city, being armed with a gun, they robbed Mahesh Chetranie of $17,250,000, property of Shamdas Kirpalani. Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said Singh was employed at Kirpalani on Regent Street and is responsible for depositing money at the Bank of Baroda. That day, he and the store manager Chetranie uplifted the money and boarded the company vehicle to make the deposit at the bank. While in the vicinity of Avenue of the Republic, they were stuck up by Rambharose and Naughton, who relieved them of the cash and made good their escape. The prosecutor objected to bail for the trio, citing the seriousness of the crime and said and if granted pre-trial freedom the accused will not return. However, attorney-at-law Mr. Nigel Hughes, representing Singh, argued that his client has been working with Kirpalani for the past six years and depositing money. Hughes said on the day in question, Singh was questioned by a police officer at Brickdam station and was arrested from his workplace Christmas Day. The lawyer complained that Singh was beaten by two particular officers, Narine and Caesar, with a police baton and there were signs of blood 24 hours after and visible black and blue marks on his neck but he was not taken to seek medical attention. The chief magistrate asked the prosecutor to investigate why the accused were not taken to seek medical attention and the allegation made by the defence counsel. Hughes said that Singh’s mother and daughter were also locked up and abused from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day. Other attorney-at-law Mr. Clyde Forde represented Rambharose and, together with Hughes, made bail applications for their clients.

The prosecutor did not object to pre-trial liberty for the defendant but requested that Underwood report every Friday at Brickdam Police Station and lodge his passport, commencing January 10, 2014, until the case is called again on January 31. Attorney-at-law Mr. Adrian Thompson, representing Underwood, claimed there was an occurrence which caused his client to be compelled to take the vehicle and drive in response to an emergency in relation to his daughter. The lawyer admitted that the defendant was not licensed to DEFENDANT: drive a motor vehicle but begged Odida Underwood for leniency. Defence counsel said the car Underwood was driving did not come into contact with the deceased but he was charged because he is not a licensed driver.

Three men, woman charged in $17M Kirpalani robbery By Geeta Rampersaud

Meanwhile , Joan Persaud, of Lot 216 Laing Avenue, Georgetown, was also not required to plead to the charge that said, on December 20, in Georgetown, as well, she received the sum of $370,000 knowing it to have been stolen. The 55-year-old year old security guard was also represented by Hughes who requested that she be admitted to reasonable bail. Prosecutor Mangru objected to the grant, on the grounds of the quantum involved and the fact that she may pose a flight risk. However, the objection was overruled and Persaud was allowed to post $100,000 and Singh $500,000 bail, while the other two defendants were remanded to prison until January 14, 2014.

Uprooted tree stalls vehicular traffic at Mahaicony

A LARGE flamboyant tree which was uprooted and fell onto the roadway at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, on Boxing Day, caused vehicular traffic to be stalled for hours Thursday night. It happened about 21:00 hrs after rain had fallen almost the entire day, causing the soil around the tree to become very wet and loose. Traffic was backed up for miles and some persons, who were on their way to Timehri Airport were stuck for more than one and a half hours until assistance was sought from the Regional Administration. Two chainsaws were acquired and the huge tree was cut into small pieces and removed from the roadway, allowing traffic to flow freely. But that was not before a utility pole came crashing down on a car, sending the occupants and those nearby scampering for safety after electricity sparks flew from the fallen post. Many persons were trapped on the roadway until the debris was cleared. Officials of the Regional Administration were not available for comment yesterday as they were said to be out in the field working.

Murder accused admitted Autopsy confirms teenager died to killing under caution after choking on a piece of bread By Geeta Rampersaud MARLON Freeman (no address given) appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday to answer a murder charge. Particulars of the offence said, on Sunday, December 22, at Turtle Creek, Five Star Backdam, North West District, he murdered Timothy Adams in the course of a robbery. Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said the crime took place around 16:00 hrs, after the victim had left Powis Landing, located some 500 feet from his mining camp. Along the route to his camp, he was attacked and robbed by Freeman and the body of the victim was found the following day with a wound to the neck. The prosecutor added that police ranks from the area conducted investigations which led to the arrest of Freeman and, subsequently, he admitted, under caution, to robbing the deceased of $19,000 and killing him in the process. The case was transferred to the Matthews Ridge Court, for February 3, 2014.

An autopsy on the teenage girl who died after eating a meal of pepperpot and bread at her home Monday last revealed that her death was due to her choking on a piece of bread, the girl’s father Mr. Godfrey Erskine said yesterday. He said the doctor had informed him that the girl choked on a piece of bread which got into her lung and caused her to be unable to breathe resulting in her death. Ronita Erskine popularly known as ‘Pinky’ took ill at her home at West Ruimveldt and died before receiving medical attention moments after she had finished a lively and animated conversation with her father and had settled down to watch her favourite video cartoons. Ronita was a student at the Gifted Hands Learning Centre. Her mother Mrs. Susan Erskine is an employee of the Guyana Chronicle. Her father had recounted the moments before the girl collapsed while eating a meal early Monday morning. He said that he had given her a meal of pepperpot and bread

and was moving around the home when he heard a loud thumping noise in the upper flat where he had left her. He rushed back upstairs to see what was happening and found the teenager tossing on the floor and apparently gasping for breath. He thought that she had choked on her food and tried to help her but her condition began to deteriorate when she began to bleed through her nose and mouth. He had no option but to rush her to a hospital. There at the St. Joseph’s Mercy Ronita Erskine Hospital, the young girl was declared dead on arrival. The family which had an extremely gloomy holiday have planned her funeral service to be held at Sandy’s Funeral Parlour on Monday.

Old Kai: Chronicles of Guyana

MOSES ‘WILDERNESS’ CALL - Is there a link between his call for a source to replenish dried-up AFC funds and reports of the USAID ‘Governance project’ providing covert funding to the Opposition parties?

THIRTY pieces of silver was the price for which Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus. We are yet to know at what price are the AFC and APNU willing to sell out Guyana’s sovereignty to the imperial forces behind the USAID ‘Governance project’. Both the AFC and APNU have come out in full support of the project even though the US Ambassador to Guyana has been less than forthcoming to the media about crucial aspects of the project. This is the very opposition which talks all day and night about transparency and accountability. Hence, why are they so keen on supporting this project which is shrouded in mystery? What we do know is that our Opposition is ready and willing to hand Guyana on a platter to outside forces just to get their hands on power. We saw this recently manifest itself with the New River Triangle Geological and Geophysical Survey, where our Opposition was more concerned about neighbouring Suriname, than Guyana’s territorial integrity and our legitimate stance that the area in question is part of our 83,000 square miles of sovereign territory. Just to attack the Guyana Government, our Opposition was willing to sacrifice part of our territory. But this is nothing new as they have already told the Guyanese people that we are all ‘collateral damage’ in their quest for political power. It should come as no surprise that once again, they are willing to take instructions from foreign agents even if it means that our people will be the ultimate victims. We have seen this before when the US funded the PNC dictatorship which reduced this country

from the most progressive in the Caribbean under the Dr. Cheddi Jagan Government to the second poorest, only ahead of Haiti in 1992. Today, after two decades of hard and unrelenting work under successive PPP/C Governments, Guyana is the most progressive economy in the Caribbean once again. And what happens? The US through USAID has returned with a secretive project to undermine our progress. Clearly, the US prefers nations which are economically weak and constantly dependent on their loans. There is a telling question which no one has asked to date. Why has the US not sought to implement its ‘Governance project’ in other Caribbean nations which are not doing as well as Guyana, such as Jamaica, St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados and most recently we read that Trinidad’s economy is not doing so MOSES NAGAMOOTOO well either. Clearly these underperforming economies need help. Why not help them? Why is the US only obsessed with Guyana, when we have been projected to record the second highest growth rate in 2014?

IS THERE A LINK? This revelation gives greater impetus to the claims by the PPP/C Government that the Opposition is on a campaign to sabotage Guyana’s economy. Every major project to further transform Guyana they have opposed and tried to destroy. Even the money laundering legislation which makes it easier to track illegal financing they have opposed. Is the AFC/APNU alliance working for an outside force? If they are, then clearly they must receive payment at some point. With today’s technology and extra scrutiny of the nation’s finances and expenditure, it would make it more difficult to ‘covertly’ fund destabilization campaigns as occurred in the 60s. So what better way than through a project shrouded in mystery and from which the Guyana Government was totally excluded. Is there a link with their refusal to support the anti-money laundering legislation? We are left to ponder the Opposition’s staunch criticism targeting the Guyana Government for rejecting the project. Only recently, AFC Member of Parliament Moses Nagamootoo publicly lamented that funds for his party had dried up. At the same time, US officials seem determined to push ahead with the project but are withholding critical information regarding the full details, preventing the average Guyanese from determining whether or not they are indeed providing funds to the Opposition. It seems a strange coincidence. Old Kai is reminded of the quote by George Santayana, which was made famous in Guyana by another US-PNC product, Jim Jones, “Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Thieves steal pig, plantains from Cozier farmers By Rajendra Prabhulall THIEVES stole a pig and several bunches of plantains from farms at Cozier on the Essequibo Coast last Monday night. Pig rearer Darrel Benn of Westbury Village said the pen on his farm was attacked and one of his pigs slaughtered. He said the animal was killed at the location and the pork transported along the muddy dam to the public road at Somerset and Berks, then to a certain village where the meat was mixed with that stolen from other pig rearers. Benn said the known thieves sold the meat of the stolen animals to the public on Christmas Eve and he estimated

his loss at about $35,000. He lamented that he has to walk the muddy dam every day to feed and care for his pigs. Benn said the thieves raided two other farms, belonging to Carl Anthony Roberts and Goberdan Polastraj, Monday night, at Cozier and stole four bunches of plantains. The farmers, who traced the foot tracks of the thieves said they know who they are and from which village and will take the matter to God in prayers, as they are all Christians and believe that the Almighty will reveal the thieves in public. The pig farmer, who is known as ‘Brother Benn’, said he was rearing pigs in his back-

yard at Westbury but had to move his pen to Cozier because of a notice that was sent to him from the Public Health Department at the Paradise-Evergreen NDC office in Dartmouth. Several residents said it is unfair that Benn had to move his pig pen to a remote location while other residents are rearing pigs in their backyards at Dartmouth and other villages with no harassment from the Public Health Department. One resident said a good example is pig rearing at Golden Fleece Estate dam in the middle of a residential area and despite pleas from residents for the pig rearing to stop the NDC has failed to address the issue.

Jury frees Cool Square murder accused By George Barclay THE Cool Square murder trial ended yesterday with the accused, Junior Bourne, being found not guilty by a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes. A t t o r n e y - a t - L a w M r. Huckumchand represented the accused, while Miss Natasha Backer appeared for the prosecution. The judge and jury in the case were, on Monday, given an eyewitness account of the March 3, 2010 incident, wherein Gadray Baston, who claimed to be the girlfriend of the victim Rawle Harding, said she had identified the accused in the dock, Junior Bourne, as one of the gunmen who had shot and killed Harding during a hold-up at the West Ruimveldt, Georgetown restaurant. But in answer to cross-examination by defence counsel Huckumchand, the witness, who had given a statement to the police, claimed she did not tell the police that the shooter was about five feet, seven inches in height. She said the description about height was information supplied by the police, and she had nothing to do with it. The witness was a waitress at Cool Square Restaurant on the night of the killing. She said the shorter of the two robbers had been wearing a cap, but the man she had identified at an identification parade held at Diamond Police Station had been picked out by her from among men, none of whom was wearing a cap. FIRST TIME Asked by defence counsel how she was able to identify the accused by the hair when, at the time of the robbery, she was seeing him for the first time with a cap on, she did not answer. In her evidence-in-chief, she had told State Prosecutrix Natasha Backer that Harding

had turned up with a man named ‘Haiti’ at about 22:45 hrs that night, and that a girl had later joined their party. She said that the two men, who looked like ordinary customers, had turned up afterwards and had bought two beers from her. They began drinking the beer and, during that time, the fair-skinned and taller man enquired from her whether she had ‘eatables’, and she had replied ‘Yes.’ Shortly thereafter, she said, the men were seen attacking

Harding with guns, as they robbed him of cash and jewellery. During the shooting that followed, Harding fell, and when taken to hospital, was pronounced dead. Backer had closed the prosecution’s case on Tuesday, and defence counsel Huckumchand had addressed the jury on Thursday. Justice James Bovell-Drakes had summed up the evidence yesterday, after which he had handed the case over to the jury for consideration and verdict.

Aries March 21 - April 19 So what if things aren’t completely wonderful in your life right now? Just keep your hopes high, and your fingers crossed. Renewal is in the air right now, and while it still remains to be seen whether or not the renewal will bring all the changes you want, you will only be better off by thinking positively. Being with the people who make you feel good about yourself will help keep your thoughts bright, so get together with your closest friend as soon as you can. Taurus April 20 - May 20 An ex is back on the scene, and it looks like they might even be on the market! Before you even contemplate finding out if they are free next week, remember why things are over between you two. Then, be grateful that they are over! Turn your head away from temptation and instead, focus on where you want to go with your life. Your independent attitude will surprise them, and even fill them with jealousy -- which is a pretty nice position to put yourself in. Gemini May 21 - June 21 If you have the time, you should offer up your services to a friend in need, today. Together you can get all of their work done in half the time, and you’ll have fun doing it together! When huge bonding opportunities like this come along, you have to take advantage of them. So what if it requires you to help them move, run a few errands for them, or do some cleaning? The feeling you get out of helping someone you like will turn all toil into pleasure. Cancer June 22 - July 22 Do not get involved with stuff that you are unsure of. Unless you can commit yourself to following through with something all the way, don’t commit yourself at all. Too many people are counting on you. Why start something when half of your brain is already coming up with an escape plan? If you don’t want to be involved, then don’t get involved. People will respect you a lot more if you are just open and up front about your concerns. Flaking out at the last minute is not going to win you points. Leo July 23 - August 22 Spend some time nurturing a friendship today -- after all, your friends are the family that you choose for yourself, and they deserve to be made a priority in your life every once in a while. That friend who stood up for you in a potentially embarrassing situation? Make sure they know just how grateful you are to have them in your life. Give them the recognition that they have been working so hard to achieve. People want to impress you, so let them know when they have succeeded. Virgo August 23 - September 22 Focusing on achieving your goals is an important part of living a successful life, but are your current goals even attainable? Reassess your plans for the future and eliminate any unrealistic goals that you have set up for yourself. Yes, you can get that job, but it might not pay what you are expecting. You can lose that weight, but it’s going to take you a little bit longer. Get more realistic and patient about your aims, or else you are just setting yourself up for failure. Libra September 23 - October 22 If you are in the middle of some complicated business, you can breathe a sigh of relief today -- things are going to move to the next stage with little if any conflict. That means that it’s time for you to start preparing for the next level! Clear your calendar to make way for the meetings, dates or extra time you’ll need to get your responsibilities out of the way. Your life isn’t all about black and white facts right now -- you have to sense some things with your heart as well as your head. Scorpio October 23 - November 21 The best way to work your way through any problem is to talk it out. Verbal communication has long been one of your strengths, and today it will help you get things out of your head and into the air so you can get a good look at them. But to be most effective, this needs to be a team operation. So call up a good friend and see if you can spill your guts to them. They’ll most likely leap at the chance to help you figure stuff out -- just like you have always helped them.

For Saturday December 28, 2013 -13:30hrs For Sunday December 29, 2013 -14:30hrs

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Your imagination knows no bounds right now, so it’s a very good day to come up a plan for winning over your crush -- or solidifying things with your sweetie. Give it a few minutes of thought, and you’ll be able to craft an unforgettably sweet and fun experience for the two of you to share. It goes without saying that dinner and a movie is out -- think about what you two like to do most and an idea is sure to pop in your head eventually. Just give it time. Capricorn December 22 - January 19 The people you will be dealing with today are going to be very unpredictable, so you need to be prepared for anything. The good news is that the spontaneous energy they bring into your life will keep you interested -- and keep you smiling! Not knowing what’s around the corner will help you relax. When you know you can’t predict the next drama, why get all worked up about it? You’re entering a more carefree phase of life -- and your friends are too! Aquarius January 20 - February 18 People will be coming to you and asking for your advice today, which is flattering -- except when all you really want is to be left alone. Then, it could become quite annoying. So if you are all about having some privacy, today, then you’re going to have to ask for it. Unless told that you are unavailable, people will be eager to take up all your time talking about their problems. Don’t worry about hurting anyone’s feelings. Just be honest about where your head is at. Pisces February 19 - March 20 Are you feeling unsure about how you’re going to fare in an upcoming social situation? Don’t worry -- you will have friends and familiar faces there to help you get through any tricky spots! You’ve got to get out of your own head right now and be more social, and it’s okay if you need help to do it. Why are you fearing emotional upheaval when all you’re going to have is an awful lot of fun? Loosen up and let the people who care about you care about you!

Horse racing pioneer, veteran lawyer Marcel Crawford dead

HORSE racing pioneer and veteran lawyer, Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford died on Christmas Day after suffering a heart attack. The death of the 76-year-old plunged the legal fraternity and enthusiasts of that equestrian sport into deep mourning. Crawford succumbed at the Anamayah Hospital, Corentyne, Berbice, late Wednesday afternoon, hours after he was taken to the institution. Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority, retired Justice Cecil Kennard expressed shock at the passing of his long-time colleague law student in England, with whom he went on to keep horse racing alive in Guyana along with several other persons. Describing his contributions to the legal profession and the horse racing community as “tremendous”, Mr. Kennard recalled that Mr. Crawford maintained his humility although he had reached great heights. The latter was admitted to practise law in England, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana in 1964. He was named Senior Counsel in 1991. Born at Salton Village (Little Alness) in Berbice, too, Crawford was honoured by several African Guyanese groups, as someone who had made remarkable contributions. The former national cycling champion was born into horse racing and went on to become the Legal Advisor to the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA). Training in the use of firearms is also given to the members, who are required to exercise restraint when armed, and must discharge a firearm in accordance with the rules governing such action. As such, the ministry said it “stands completely adamant against any form of unprofessional conduct that besmirches the image of Community Policing in Guyana”. The conduct demonstrated will be investigated with the expectation of having a satisfactory outcome, the ministry said. “Sincere condolences go out to the aggrieved at this time of their grief and sorrow,” the

ministry stated. In an initial report following the tragedy, the police said Jhaggroo, of Bellevue, West Bank Demerara, was killed at about 19:00 hrs on December 18, 2013, at Bellevue. Initial investigations have revealed that Jaggroo was involved in an argument with his mother during which a man, who resides next door and operates an off licence liquor store, intervened and assaulted him with a piece of wood. It is reported that Jhaggroo was on his way to the Wales Police Station to make a report when he was confronted by three men, one of whom is a licensed firearm holder, and who were at the off licence liquor store, during which he was shot to his back

‘SHOT & KILLED’: Godfrey Jhaggroo with a shotgun. Jaggroo was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

President comforts children at GPHC - distributes Christmas presents

THERE were smiles on the faces of many of the 26 young patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Christmas Day, when President Donald Ramotar, accompanied by his daughter Lisa Ramotar, along with GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan and other officials visited the hospital’s Paediatric ward. The President and his daughter delivered gifts and kind words to the young children who are being treated for ailments ranging from burns and broken limbs, to cancer. The Head of State said he was happy to be able to visit the children who were ill and also expressed appreciation for those care givers on duty at this time within the various children’s units. “I’m happy to be coming here to extend Christmas greetings to those who are not in a position to enjoy themselves. I thought I would come to meet them, to meet the caregivers - the nurses, the doctors who are here at this point in time, who would have been away from their families and contributing their services. I’m happy to be here to share with the children, the nurses and doctors that I’ve seen, and I want to express profound thanks to the caregivers - the nurses and doctors and all those who are working hard here…for the work that they are doing on behalf of our country, on behalf of our people. To those who are ill, I take the opportunity to wish them a very speedy recovery and hopefully they will be spending New Year’s at home,” the President said. Ms. Lisa Ramotar said this was her first visit to the hospital, after returning to Guyana several months ago, on completion of her studies. GUYANA CHRONICLE Saturday December 28, 2013

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has expressed its sorrow at the tragic death of Guyana’s Chief Librarian, Ms. Gillian Thompson, in a road accident on Christmas Eve day. APNU said this event should serve as a reminder to the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Home Affairs of the road deaths of former Commissioner of Police Henry Greene last year and of Constable Shaquille Anderson and Assistant Commissioner Derrick Josiah, during ‘Road Safety Month’ in November this year. In a statement issued yesterday, APNU said it would like to remind the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration of the Ministry of Health’s National Rehabilitation Services Strategy 2009-2013 which revealed that road accidents were among the top 10 leading causes of death and account for the greatest number of disabilities.

stalls, stray dogs, farm animals and parked or broken-down vehicles. The surfaces of the main roadways – East and West Berbice, East and West Demerara and Linden-Soesdyke – which have deteriorated must be repaired.

APNU outlines steps to make our roads safer 1,563 persons have been killed in traffic accidents in 2002-2012 and over 100 have already been killed for the current year, 2013 – a rough average of nearly a dozen deaths every month. APNU urges the ruling PPP/C to work diligently to achieve the objectives of the UN’s Global Decade of Action for Road Safety Month 2010-2020 and Guyana National Road Safety Council’s National Road Safety Strategy for 2013-2020. The main Opposition party suggested that the following steps should be taken, which can save lives and prevent injuries: * Road safety: Implementation of measures to ensure that roads that run through heavily populated villages are better lit at night, provided with sidewalks and are unencumbered by vendors’

* Human safety: Improvement of the safety of the most vulnerable road users – pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. Some drivers of commercial vehicles and minibuses simply do not have the discipline, skill, experience or temperament to be entrusted with responsibility for human lives on public roads. Many display aggressive behaviour and poor road discipline by driving under the influence of alcohol. Measures must be taken to disqualify incompetent and incorrigible persons from driving taxis and buses. * Vehicle safety: Inspection of newly imported motor vehicles must be carried out to ensure that the minimum global safety accessories and features are adopted. There are now about 80,000 vehicles on Guyana’s roads and their safety performance must be rigorously reassessed. * Road safety management: Increased and sustained enforcement of road safety laws and standards is necessary to improve road user behaviour. Police enforcement operations such as ‘Operation Safeway’ and ‘Operation Road Order’ quickly degenerated into the arrests of hundreds of petty offenders without stopping the spiralling toll of fatalities. Responses to excessive speeding on the roadways should also include patrolling high-risk zones by day and night; enforcing lower speed limits wherever public roads run through populous rural communities; ensuring that minibuses and other commercial vehicles carry the lawful complement of cargo or passengers; banning distracting music and movies from minibuses and prohibiting the sale of intoxicating beverages in or near to public transportation terminals. * Human safety response: Introduction of improved emergency care and pre-hospital services for victims of accidents by establishing a national ambulance service and training a corps of first responder emergency care assistants.

NATION’S BOXING PROMOTION

Richmond demolishes Walcott to take Super Middleweight title … Gibson outpunches Park

By Joe Chapman POCKET ROCKET Gym’s Derrick Richmond obliterated the challenge of James ‘Sacks’ Walcott with a devastating right hand that accorded him the national Super Middleweight title of Guyana, when the Nation’s Promotion hosted its card at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground last Thursday night. On the same card, Shelly ‘The Agricola Boom’ Gibson outpunched hometown girl Shondell Park in their fourround historic heavyweight fight, where over 712 pounds of flesh moved around the ring, setting the venue alight. In front of a small crowd there were also wins for former WBC/CABOFE Middleweight champion Shawn Corbin over Anthony Augustine and Linden’s Cassius Matthews who got the better of Kelsey Simon in a welterweight scrap, along with four entertaining amateur fights featuring boxers from the Carryl Boxing Gym of

Linden. The highlight, however, was the vacant Super Middleweight contest in which Richmond, in knocking out Walcott, showed that his recent demolition job of Edmond DeClou by a thirdround stoppage was no fluke. This title fight turned out to be a testing one for both fighters and after the first round which saw the tenacious approach by Walcott provide some difficulty for Richmond, who was trying to measure his way in, it seemed that the rangy Walcott would get the better of his shorter opponent. But this was not to be. When Richmond went to his corner it was observed that the medical personnel examined his face and one could only guess he had suffered a cut, but he was able to resume the next round without any alarm. In round two the cagey Walcott put together some onetwo combinations during which he caught Richmond with a combination which caused referee Eion Jardine to give him the mandatory eight-count. Round three saw the forcefulness of Richmond pave the way for him to get in some combinations and as he came forward in his eagerness to take control he actually connected below the belt of Walcott, causing his opponent to openly show his concern about such a low blow. As they entered the centre of the ring for the fourth stanza, Walcott had regained some measure of control in dictating the fight, but as an aggressive Richmond, who was coached by Orland Rogers, came forward seeking to punch his way into contention, he slipped, causing his left thigh to go under the ropes outside the ring. Such a move apparently created some amount of restriction in a standing position for Richmond, creating signs of concern by his corner, while many thought it would be a matter of time before Walcott would take care of the business

Shawn at hand. The ringside physician, Patricia Chase–Green attended to Richmond and after some confidence-building the fourth stanza resumed, with Richmond backing Walcott into a corner and connecting with a thunderous right hook to Walcott, but Jardine waved off the contest at 2 minutes 56 seconds of the round. There was a thunderous applause for the females in their main bout of the night as Park and Gibson weighed in at record poundage entering a heavyweight fight in Guyana, Park at 415 and Gibson 308. From the outset the taller

Corbin Park was slower and Gibson a tad faster and this advantage remained throughout the bout. Gibson being the shorter was able to put together more punches, while Park was less active. But both women went at each other for four rounds, with Gibson coming out on top. Earlier in the night, Corbin returned to the ring in his hometown and proved too hot for Augustine who called it quits after two of the scheduled four rounds, while Matthews came away with a split decision win over Simon, even as Kelroy George and Romeo Norville fought to a draw.

In-form Hafeez earns Pakistan Test recall (REUTERS) - Muhammad Hafeez has been recalled to Pakistan’s Test squad following his prolific form in the one-day series against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates.

Hafeez has scored three centuries in the first four oneday matches with the fifth and final match being played yesterday, piling up 407 runs in four innings at an average of 203 ahead of the three-Test series

that runs from December 31 in Abu Dhabi. The national T20 captain lost his place in the Test side because of poor form when Pakistan played against South Africa in the UAE in October.

Muhammad Hafeez

Pakistan’s selectors kept faith with out-of-form Younus Khan, although the former captain was dropped for the one-day series. Experienced pace bowler Umar Gul is back in the Test fold after making an impressive comeback in the one-day series against Sri Lanka, taking six wickets in two games. Gul was out of cricket for nearly eight months after undergoing knee surgery in May. Fast bowler Muhammad

Talha, who played his lone match for Pakistan in the abandoned second Test against Sri Lanka, at Lahore in March 2009, was a surprise name in the 15-man squad. Squad: Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Younus Khan, Muhammad Hafeez, Khurrum Manzoor, Ahmed Shehzad, Shaan Masood, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Adnan Akmal, Junaid Khan, Rahat Ali, Umar Gul, Muhammad Talha, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman.

Chandimal stars in win DINESH CHANDIMAL guided Sri Lanka to a dramatic two-wicket win over Pakistan in the fifth one-day international in Abu Dhabi yesterday. Sri Lanka looked to be on the ropes as a late clatter of wickets left them needing 18 off the final two overs in chase of 233 with just two wickets remaining, but sixes from Chandimal and Ajantha Mendis in the penultimate over put them on the front foot and Mendis sealed victory with a four with two balls to spare. Chandimal finished with 64 and earlier Lasith Malinga had taken four wickets to help Sri Lanka to victory in the final match of a series they have lost 3-2. Angelo Mathews’ men looked like they were going to cruise to victory in their reply as openers Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan engineered them safely through the opening 12 overs. The former was swinging the bat and sat three runs short of half-century off just 41 balls when he fell lbw while attempting to reverse sweep Mohammad Hafeez to fine leg. That took the score to 75 for one when Kumar Sangakkara came to the crease and he and Dilshan continued to score steadily before the opener fell for 45, hoisting a Junaid Khan delivery into the hands of Saeed Ajmal. Just four overs later, Sangakkara was on his way back to the pavilion as he was cleanbowled by Khan for 22 and all of a sudden Sri Lanka looked like they could be wobbling at 129 for three. Chandimal was at the other end and it looked like he may have to hold the reply together as Ashan Priyanjan departed for a single run, edging Umar Gul to wicketkeeper Umar Akmal. Mathews then helped to steady the ship but the run rate dried up as Sri Lanka began to fall behind in the game and when he edged Anwar Ali behind for just eight, they needed more than a run a ball. A dramatic finish looked on the cards but Chandimal was running out of partners and when Kithuruwan Vithanage was bowled by Ajmal for 14 it was advantage Pakistan. Sachithra Senanayake holed out to Hafeez off Khan for three with the final ball of the 45th over and just three balls later Malinga was gone, bowled by Ajmal for a golden duck to leave Sri Lanka 195 for eight.

Dinesh Chandimal But Chandimal was showing some determination as he brought up his 50 off 62 balls leaving his team needing 18 off the final two overs before he and Mendis produced their big finish. Earlier, Malinga returned figures of four for 57 and Suranga Lakmal three for 42 as Pakistan were dismissed for 232, after they won the toss and elected to bat, but Malinga and Lakmal were quick to cause problems. The latter had Ahmed Shehzad caught at mid-off by Priyanjan for 17 and Malinga removed fellow opener Sharjeel Khan, caught and bowled off a leading edge, for 18. Malinga had his second victim when he had Sohaib Maqsood caught by Dilshan at

point for seven, but Misbah-ulHaq and Hafeez brought Pakistan back in the contest. The duo put on 58 before Mathews, who conceded just 26 runs from his 10 overs, grabbed his only wicket of the innings by bowling Hafeez between bat and pad for 41. Malinga took the key wicket of Misbah, whose 51 came from 74 balls and featured two fours and one six, as wicketkeeper Sangakkara held on to an inside edge. That left Pakistan 169 for five and Malinga and Lakmal did not waste time in wrapping up the tail, even though Ali offered some resistance with an unbeaten 41 but he ran out of partners as Pakistan’s innings ended after 49.3 overs.

Nadal says fitness more important than titles in 2014 (REUTERS) - Staying fit is more important to Rafael Nadal in 2014 than adding to his 13 grand slam titles, the world number one was quoted as saying yesterday. Spaniard Nadal had one of the best seasons of his career in 2013 following his return in February after seven months out with a knee injury, winning 10 tournaments including a record eighth French Open crown and a second U.S. Open title. As he gears up for the start of the 2014 tour, the 27-year-old Mallorcan told Spain’s As newspaper remainRafael Nadal

ing healthy and being able to challenge at the top level were his priorities. “What I want is to be able to start the year well and in shape to compete in the big tournaments,” Nadal said. “In that sense, and thinking about 2014, I am not going to talk at the moment about winning the ninth Roland Garros or winning Wimbledon again, which would be the third time. “No, look: what is important to me is to maintain my fitness in a way that will allow me to play the whole year, and

competing at a good level. You see it’s not easy: I couldn’t do that, for the whole season, in 2012, 2013.” Nadal’s 10 titles last season came close to matching the best year of his career, when he won 11 in 2005, including his first Roland Garros crown. He said his enforced rest in the second half of 2012 had meant he was fresh and hungry on his return and that was possibly why he had been so successful. “In terms of results, I don’t know if 2013 was the best year of my career,” Nadal told As. “What made it special was the feeling of being able to compete again at the level I managed. But certainly 2013 was the most emotional of my career. If you ask me about the key elements of what happened I think I started playing when I was fresher than ever after a seven-month rest. That may have been the key to the successes.” Nadal will get his next crack at a grand slam when the Australian Open starts in Melbourne in mid January, while he played compatriot and world number three David Ferrer at an invitational event in Abu Dhabi later yesterday.

England bowlers choke Australia after drawing blood By Ian Ransom (REUTERS) - A resurgent England attack tore through Australia’s batting lineup with six wickets in the final session to leave the hosts reeling on 164 for 9 at the close of an attritional second day of the fourth Ashes Test yesterday. Bowled out for what seemed a paltry 255 in the morning, the tourists hit back through their seamers in the afternoon with Stuart Broad and James Anderson’s parsimony and discipline capturing three wickets apiece before a crowd of more than 78 000 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, fighting another desperate rearguard action, was 43 not out at stumps, with number 11 batsman Nathan Lyon yet to face a ball and Australia trailing by 91 runs. “England are on top. We have had our worst day of the series,” Australia opener Chris Rogers said after scoring 61, his third half-century of the series. “They bowled outstandingly and we’re up against it.” Australia may have recovered the Ashes and wrapped up the five-Test series 3-0, but the frailty of their batsmen has been repeatedly exposed throughout the series before being hastily concealed by the dourness of Haddin. Unlike the first three Tests

in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, however, none of the keeper’s team mates lingered for long enough to mount a rescue of any sort and an England that, for many, seemed destined to be swept 5-0, suddenly appeared rejuvenated and chirpy. “Days like that have been few and far between on this trip, and we’re really hungry to get something out of this tour and I think we showed that today,” Anderson said. “I thought we fielded, or most of the other guys, fielded pretty well all day. We dived around a lot, we chased everything. I thought (captain) Cookie set really good fields, we bowled to those fields and it was a really complete performance.” Having restricted Australia to 96-3 at tea, their bowlers turned the screws under bright sunshine, and Steve Smith was the first domino to fall. The number five batsman had hung around for 95 minutes and 77 balls for his 19 runs, but flashed a frustrated cut shot that sent an edge flying to Ian Bell at second slip. The wicket broke a 48-run partnership and sparked a collapse as Rogers promptly threw away his wicket after nearly four hours of painstaking graft. T h e 3 6 - y e a r- o l d h a d shown great poise, raising the half-century shortly before

Bresnan his second wicket. Ryan Harris lasted 27 balls for his six runs before fending off a rising delivery from Broad to Joe Root at short leg and play was brought to a close when Peter Siddle spooned to Bresnan at cover to be out for a duck off Broad. Australia captain Clarke’s poor record against England at the venue continued when he was bowled for 10 after not playing at a swinging Anderson delivery after lunch. Anderson also removed dangerous opener David Warner for nine before all-rounder Stokes dismissed number three Shane Watson for 10 shortly before lunch. The morning belonged to Australia’s Johnson, however,

Chris Rogers battles in determined fashion but is struck on the helmet after ducking into a short delivery from Stuart Broad (Getty Images) tea after being struck in the helmet by a Broad delivery that left him bleeding from his temple. But his attempted slog over mid-on off Bresnan found only Kevin Pietersen charging to his right. One-day specialist George Bailey never appeared comfortable in the role of rescuer and followed soon after, caught behind by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow off Anderson for a 19-ball duck. FAINT NOISE Umpire Aleem Dar turned down the appeal, but the ‘snicko’ technology suggested a

faint noise, which was deemed enough to award the wicket and prompted indignant jeers from the crowd, as Australia were teetering on 122-6, but Haddin ignored the scoreboard, blasting a six off Ben Stokes over long-on and two fours in an over off Anderson. Anderson let his captain and Bresnan down twice with two dropped catches, a tough chance reprieving Smith on seven before tea and a much simpler one saving Johnson an hour before stumps. He made amends shortly after by taking a sharp chance to remove Johnson at midwicket for two and hand

as he continued his scintillating form to finish the innings with 5-63, his new ball spell reaping a devastating 5-18 in nine overs. The left-arm paceman struck with his first ball of the morning to have Bresnan caught by a scrambling Bailey at square leg for one. His fifth ball bowled Kevin Pietersen for 71, the horrible slog attempt unlikely to quell the batsman’s detractors. Broad was trapped in front by Johnson for 11 in an almost exact repeat of the third Test dismissal in Perth that injured the Englishman’s foot. Lyon ended the innings by bowling Monty Panesar for two, leaving Anderson stranded on 11 not out and bringing England’s innings to a close.

Steyn’s six puts South Africa on top vs India By Nick Said (REUTERS) - Fast bowler Dale Steyn ripped through the India batting line-up on a rain-reduced day two of the second Test at Kingsmead to claim six wickets and hand the momentum to South Africa in the series decider yesterday.

India lost their last nine wickets for 136 runs as they crashed from a commanding 198 for one to 334 all out, with Steyn the catalyst for their collapse as he ended a barren run of 414 deliveries between wickets in the series with a fiery spell of bowling after lunch. South Africa raced to 82

without loss in their reply during a marathon three-hour final session with openers Graeme Smith (35 not out) and Alviro Petersen (46 not out) to resume today as the Proteas aim to build a big lead. Nine of the 10 Indian wickets were caught behind the wicket as the South African pace barrage that had looked so

meek on day one came to life with Steyn’s inspired spell in the afternoon session in which he took three wickets in 10 balls. After the morning was c omple te ly los t to r ain , Cheteshwar Pujara (70) was Steyn’s first victim as India added 17 runs to their overnight 181 for one, caught by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers pushing forward to a pitched-

up ball. It brought to an end a fine second-wicket stand of 157 between Pujara and Murali Vijay that had so frustrated South Africa on the opening day. Vijay moved to within three of his century before he succumbed to Steyn’s shortpitched attack, gloving the ball down the leg-side to de Villiers. And the very next ball Rohit Sharma (zero) misjudged the bounce as he shouldered arms

to a delivery that always looked destined to crash into middle stump. Virat Kohli was on course for his third half-century in as many innings in the series before he was out 10 minutes before tea for 46, another catch down the leg-side by de Villiers, this time off Morne Morkel. India advanced to 320 before they lost their sixth wicket, MS Dhoni (24) providing a catch for Smith at first slip off Steyn.

K&S/CHICO ELITE NEXT GENERATION

Ash comes away with 13-0 win over PC on Christmas Day … Browne fires in five By Calvin Roberts ATLIN Browne found the back of the net five times while Lester Cummings did so on four occasions, as Ash Educational Institute successfully passed their examinations with President’s College (PC) in the Kashif and Shanghai/Chico Elite Next Generation Football tournament, by coming away with a 13-0 victory on Christmas Day at the Number 5 ground in West Berbice. Browne found the back of the net in the 23rd, 45th, 57th, 73rd and 88th minutes of play, while Cummings did so in the 12th, 39th, 45th and 54th minutes before being substituted after his final goal as Ash Education underlined their humiliation of PC, by controlling the run of play throughout the contest. Neil Munroe, who scored a double in the 2nd and 66th minutes, opened the scoring for Ash with his first goal when he wormed his way down the right flank past a bewildered Glenroy McTurk and beating their custodian Sanarier DaSilva. Ten minutes later Cummings scored the first of his helmet-trick, beating DaSilva from the top of his own box with a ripper to the far post, while Browne got the first of his five 11 minutes after Cummings’ strike from the penalty spot. With a deficit of 3-0 midway the first half, PC tried their best to find their key players Stedman Martins, Von Harding and Yvan Armstrong, but great defence work from Browne, who overlapped from the defence with ease, Jason Johashen and Kevin Layne for Ash Education, prevented the trio from making an impact for PC. DaSilva brought some

Ash Education’s duo who destroyed President’s College: Atlin Browne (right) and Lester Cummings display brotherly love after the game. energy into his team with a magnificent save from a Cummings shot inside the box, after Browne’s penalty kick, but both Cummings and Browne refused to be denied, with Cummings scoring a double within six minutes and Browne adding his second during added-time in the first half, which was dominated by the hosts. As if their 6-0 lead at halftime was not enough, Ash Education took the field for the second half like a pack of hungry wolves and demonstrated such to the appreciative crowd which included K&S Organisation directors Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, with their deft touches and passing of the ball. For one period, they strung together close to 25 passes from their midfield to PC’s third, where their danger men on the wing in Munroe (right) and Brian Thom made some exquisite distribution for the forwards, who finished brilliantly. Twice did Thom send across passes from the left hand side and on both occasions, Browne and Cummings finished clinically, while Akeemo Watts also converted one of Thom’s cross-

es in the 61st minute to add his name to the score sheet. However, the goal of the game came off Cummings’ boot, when the lanky striker fired a ripper from just outside the 18-yard box with precision and power in the 54th minute, leaving DaSilva no chance even though he flung himself on the first post, following which he (Cummings) was substituted, while Jamaal Angus scored a wonderful header from a Munroe cross in the 68th minute. Martin tried once to at least place his team on the scoresheet, but his free kick which was awarded at the top of the box was not only feeble, but also wide creating little or no trouble for Ash custodian, who had an entirely easy day between the uprights, as his team completed the convincing win. Following the one-sided action in the first encounter, fans were anticipating a similar contest between Bladen Hall and Ann’s Grove in the feature match of the day’s double-header. Moreso, when Daniel Pellew scored the game’s opening goal for Ann’s Grove in the 8th minute, following a gem of

a pass from Jamal Blair, rumors of an upset victory made the rounds during regulation time for the underdogs. As was expected, Bladen Hall showed fight, stamina and determination after conceding the early goal and duly got the equaliser they were working assiduously for in the 20th minute, when Curtis Martin ran on to an intended back pass, and gave the ball to a free Kevron Durant. With his deft moves that belied his size, Durant wormed his way through the opposition defence and when their custodian reacted late, he lobbed the ball over his head to nullify Pellew’s opening goal. This sparked celebrations on the bench. With both sides failing to find the back of the net in the second half, penalty kicks were the order of the day in which Ann’s Grove reigned supreme with a 3-0 win. ON COURSE Meanwhile in yesterday’s action, Wismar/Christianburg Secondary, the two-time Digicel nationwide champions inflicted a 5-2 defeat on Ann’s Grove at the Buxton Community Centre ground, while Waramadong were made to fight hard for the second time before coming away with a 3-1 penalty-kicks win over Charlestown Secondary. At the Georgetown Football Club ground, Waramadong, who placed third in the first Digicel nationwide Inter-Secondary Schools tournament two years ago before losing the next two finals to Wismar/Christianburg Secondary, scored the opening goal against Charlestown in the 12th minute, thanks to Lyndell Joseph. After a see-saw battle wherein Charlestown went in search of the equaliser

Lyndell Joseph even as Waramadong looked to double their lead, it was Charlestown who nullified Joseph’s strike, courtesy of a triangular play involving Josiah Charles, Omari James and Shane Morris. Charles’ shot was parried for a corner by Waramadong custodian and captain Gerald Isaacs and from the resulting corner kick taken by Morris, the ball was sent to Charles who found James midst a crowd of defenders and he made a onetime pass back to Morris. The diminutive Morris, who was working overtime for Charlestown, made his way into the 18-yard box from where he fired his shot beating Isaacs on the far post in the 39th minute, to level the score while bringing new hope to his team. It all went to a-begging when a tame shot from Joseph from the top of Charlestown’s box, beat Marvin Prince, between the uprights for the South Georgetown-based team, who earlier this year adorned themselves in glory with the Scotia Bank/Pepsi Academy title, in the 45th minute. The second half was no different from the first, with Charles hitting the cross bar, while Prince affected several saves off the boot of 2013 Digicel Most Valuable Player (MVP) Whazir Bascombe, until the 90th minute of play

when Charlestown got the equaliser. Prince had thwarted Bascombe and instead of kicking the ball out, he proceeded to take on the four Waramadong players who were in front of him, doing so successfully before sending a long through ball to Charles, who muffed the pass but won for his team a corner. That kick found the boot of James who was unmarked at the last post of Waramadong’s goal and made its way into the net, sparking off celebrations among his teammates on and of the field, before they fell at the last hurdle, losing the penalty kicks shootout 3-1. At Buxton, Shane Luckie got a first-half hat-trick, with two of his three goals coming from the penalty spot and which were backed by second-half strikes from Ezra Ashby and Rolex John, handing Wismar/ Christianburg a 5-2 win. Luckie scored his goals in the 19th, 23rd and 29th minutes of play even as Ashby scored in the 65th and John added his name to the scorer’s list three minutes after Ashby’s goal for Wismar Christianburg, while Daniel Pellew (60th) and Ozese Halley (70th) were responsible for Ann’s Grove’s goals. In the second match at the same venue yesterday, Ash Education continued their impressive showing with a 3-0 win over Annandale Secondary, thanks to goals from Cummings (10th), Browne (60th) and Halley (70th), to set up a semifinal showdown with Wismar/Christianburg tomorrow. Waramadong will play the winner of the St George’s/ Mackenzie High showdown in the second semifinal tomorrow, with the winners clashing in the final at the Guyana National Stadium on New Year’s Day.

Philander in S Africa’s preliminary T20 World Cup squad REUTERS) - South Africa have included the world’s number one Test bowler Vernon Philander in their preliminary 30-man squad for the World Twenty20 tournament to be played in Bangladesh in March and April next year. Philander played the last of his seven Twenty20 international matches in 2007, but his recent recall to the one-day international

set-up suggested the Proteas were ready to use him in the shortest format of the game as well. The squad, to be captained by Faf du Plessis, has been submitted well before the January 6 deadline and will be pruned to the final 15 players later. Squad: Faf du Plessis (captain), Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock, AB de
