Welcome Spring!

Spring, 2013

‘Legal Eagle’ Word Search

Hello friends, Spring is just around the corner and as you've probably guessed we're ready to get all of our clients' needs and projects going for 2013! As many of you have seen, we launched our new and improved website late last year. If you haven't visited yet please take a minute to see all the new info along with improved navigation to help with all for your home's exterior remodeling projects and home service needs. We are proud to announce we are offering a new product called Indow Window. This amazing product can actually take the place of having to replace your existing windows with the extra benefit of saving up to 50% on energy bills. Open to page 3 to learn more. Also new for 2013; Gutterman Services has been chosen by 5-Star Magazine’s “Home Services Review” to be featured in their 2013 directory of preferred home service vendors. We are honored to have been chosen and look forward to working with 5-Star Magazine to continually bring the extra level of customer service required to be considered among the best in the Home Services Industry. Home maintenance issues occur whether we want them to or not. Most of us are too busy or don't have the physical skills necessary to keep on top of things. We can help! In 2012 we introduced our Platinum Level Service Agreement. This service agreement combines routine gutter cleaning with our other services such as power washing and handyman divisions. This agreement offers our clients a new level of service without the hassle of having to hire several companies at once. Lastly, with all of our improvements and changes - at Gutterman - one thing that hasn't changed is our commitment to customer satisfaction. We still have an average 10 year tenure among our staff. So you'll still hear many of the same voices and see the same smiling faces you've seen for years helping you with your homes repair and maintenance needs.

Bottle Cap’s Birthday The crimp-top bottle cap was patented by William Painter on February 2, 1892. He called it, and it’s still officially known as, the ‘disposable crown cork bottle cap’. Painter not only had to invent and patent the cap but a bottle to fit it. Convincing the bottle manufacturers and bottlers that his new cap was worth changing the whole process of making and handling bottles was his real obstacle. He succeeded. He didn't invent an opener and no one knows who did, but openers appeared at about the same time.

Revolutionary Indow® Windows Now Available from Gutterman! Gutterman Services is pleased to announce Indow Windows! Local homeowners can now keep their homes warm, cut energy costs, and reduce noise pollution up to 70 percent without replacing beautiful classic windows that are common in older homes. Company founder Sam Pardue invented Indow Windows to solve the dilemma he faced in his 1906 Portland Craftsman home. “I did not want to rip out my beautiful old windows but I was tired of cold drafts and soaring energy bills.” Pardue's solution is elegantly simple. An Indow Window is a sheet of laser tailored acrylic glazing edged with the company's patented Compression Tube. The company laser measures the inside of a window frame and then makes the insert the exact same shape, even if the window has shifted out of square. The low profile design almost disappears when installed. “Older homes can consume three times the electricity of contemporary structures—and leaky windows are the number one source for energy loss,” said Pardue. “For residents living in homes built before 1960, this means drafts, noise and high energy bills. Indow Windows customers can keep their homes warm, quiet and comfortable while preserving gorgeous windows on their vintage homes.” Indow Windows innovative product fits nicely with Gutterman Services' mission to strive towards comfort and energy efficiency in the home. “Indow Windows appreciates that Gutterman is family owned and has a community dedication to build a sustainable future,” says Russ Eisenberg, Director of Sales at Indow Windows. “We look forward to working with homeowners all over the DC area to weatherize their windows and keep the architectural integrity of the home intact.” To learn more, and to get Indow Windows in your home, contact a Gutterman representative today!

More Front Porches, Fewer Decks, Patios and Garages Construction companies are pleased to see the current increase in new home orders. They also notice that buyers ordering a home are focusing mainly on living quarters. The percentage of homes built without a garage or carport hit 13 percent in 2010 and 2011 and is rising again since then. The National Association of Home Builders says skipping the garage is often about using public transportation if the new construction is built closer to employment centers and public transit. The Census also shows that the number of new homes built with decks and patios has leveled off. They are expensive and take up space, usually behind the house. If the building lot is large enough to accommodate them, people think the deck or patio can be added later.

Gutterman’s craftsmen completely renovated the exterior of this home in 2009, adding a new portico and drastically enhancing its value and curb appeal!

There is a current trend toward smaller homes that have a front porch. The porches have social appeal, and with plantings, lighting and porch posts, they enhance the entrance to the home. Two-thirds of new homes built in 2011 had a porch, a percentage that has been rising for about 10 years. One Philadelphia developer says he specializes in townhouses with porches, because that's what people want.

Check Your Sump Pump Before Big Spring Rains The lowly sump pump in your basement or crawlspace may be something you rarely think about. Before the biggest spring rains start to fall, it's time to test it, check its operation and its discharge. Don't wait until it should work and doesn't.

Ideally, you should have an electrician install a dedicated circuit (20A) and a cord long enough to reach it without interruption. Next, go outside to check what discharge water is doing. It should be some distance from your home and on a slope to assure that the discharge will not flow back to the pump and have to be pumped over again and again. Be sure the discharge hose isn't partially plugged with sticks and leaves.

If properly installed, the pump will be in a well of some kind. To test its operation, use a garden hose or a bucket to run water into the well. It might take more than you think to start pumping. Continue filling until the pump has cycled on and off three times.

The pump itself will give no indication that it's going to quit, but it will after five to seven years. If this would cause a serious problem for you, it’s a good idea to invest in a battery-operated pump to back it up.

Turn off the breaker that provides electricity to the pump and reach down to see if debris has gathered around the intake. Clear it out to avoid future problems.

If the standard pump quits, the battery pump takes over.

Plugging the pump into an extension cord will shorten its life.

What Our Customers Say Below are just a few customer testimonials from recent jobs this winter. We would love to hear from you – email us at marketing@guttermanservices.com. “Love my new roof and gutters. Wonderful personal service beyond comparison. In the age of automated phone systems and e-mails it was refreshing to be with a company that treats their customers as family with care and consideration. First I have to say, I contacted at least 4 other contractors who said they would call back or would email me an estimate. Only 1 other actually did . With that said before the job started Hurricane Sandy swept through an left me with 1 small roof leak. I called to see when the materials would be in and when the projected start date was as I had a small leak. A very nice lady (all their office personnel was) said the project manager would give me a courtesy call. By 3 pm that day I got the best courtesy call I have ever received. It was the project manager, at my door, ladder in hand and he patched the leak right then. At 5pm the called me back to make sure the project manager had called. WOW!! The next week work started and for 5 days from sunrise to after sunset they worked nonstop. . It's refreshing to know that there are still some honest, hardworking individuals who really care about their customers and the quality of their work.” Thank you to everyone, Holly G. Leesburg Virginia

“Because Gutterman Services has excellent reviews on Angie's List, we arranged to have one of your estimators evaluate our situation. The person who scheduled the appointment, Ann McGavin, was helpful and friendly, and she sent us an e-mail confirming the date and time of the appointment along with the name and photo of the estimator. Paul Johanson arrived right on time and did a very thorough inspection of our entire gutter system. He immediately recognized what was causing our problems and explained what can be done to correct them. He didn't try to sell us anything more than what we needed, and he quoted us a reasonable price. Paul is personable, knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about the quality of the products he sells and the work done by Gutterman Services. We didn't realize the company does far more than just repair and replace gutters, but Paul took the time to fully describe all the services and products you provide. He gave us a lot to think about, so we're still in the decision making process. But I must say, Ann and Paul have certainly left us with a very good impression of Gutterman Services.” Carolyn R. Fairfax, VA

“Just wanted to pass along a recommendation on a roofer/you name it contractor. As many of you likely noticed, my roof was living on borrowed time for a number of years. When my wife finally got some quotes I was a little shocked at the price range; I guess I was living off memories from 10 or 15 years ago. Anyway, we did end up being pretty thorough about it and got 4 or 5 quotes. The easy winner ended up being Gutterman Services. Gutterman did both my roof as well as Marc and Laurie's across the path, so you can see the results for yourself. The company name is a little misleading, but gutter services is where the owner, Chris Pauly, started out 25 or more years ago and his company still performs, and he has not wanted to change the name. Sooooooooooo……… don't let the name mislead you, they do quite a wide range of work including decks, windows as well as some pretty complicated, one-off custom roofing projects. Chris has his own metal component fabrication facilities, so he is able to custom construct required components certainly including the gutters and chimney parts. Chris is in fact the chap that was at the last Annual Meeting and at Leon's request gave the presentation on metal roofing. Chris spent quite awhile at our home before we gave the contract and he spent quite awhile with us yesterday doing a walk thru and he was quite knowledgeable and was willing to give me advice and a whole number of issues of interesting in the house. Chris also came over during the work to make sure things were going well. We now have two punch-list items left, one I noticed and one Chris noticed, and Chris couldn't be more committed to making sure the job gets done perfectly. I didn't really have to take Chris' word on the additional plywood that needed replacement or other aspects of the project, thought I would have been comfortable doing so, as I received an on-line photo album showing the process; I could see the before and after (OK – THE ROOF WAS A MESS!) – a few sample photos are shown below as is a sample of a communication to us during execution to make us aware of a project variance. Soooooooooooooooo...............in short, the price was as good as anyone's and the service was outstanding. I was hesitant to spend the extra money on things like gutters when I already had them, though not looking too great, but included with the roof pricing wise it was hard to pass up, and yes, Gutterman Services indeed can do gutters as good as anyone, so I now have pretty cool gutters that I no longer will need to get up on a ladder to scrap the leaves out of or adjust the screens on. Even if you have a small issue, such as gutter cleaning or repair, I would go ahead and try these guys and use the opportunity to get to know Gutterman a little better for yourself. Thx,” Steve, Reston VA
