Be Alert for Opportunities

FINANCIAL FOCU$

When Preparing for College Costs

Now that summer is winding down, it will soon be “back-to-school” time. When children are young, your logistics for the new academic year may involve little more than a trip to buy school supplies. But if you’d like to send your kids (or grandkids) to college someday, you need to plan far ahead to meet the financial demands. And, as part of your planning, you also need to be on the lookout for all opportunities to help pay those sizable college bills. Specifically, you’ll need to be ready to take action in these areas:

Financial aid – You should start thinking about financial aid at least a year before your child heads off to college. For example, you can begin submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on Oct. 1, 2019, for the 202021 academic year. And if the past is any guide, you’ll always need to remember that Oct. 1 date for the next school year. The FAFSA helps colleges and the U.S. Department of Education evaluate your financial need and determine how much financial support your child requires. And since a lot of financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, it’s a good idea to submit your forms as soon as possible once the application period opens. Scholarships – Colleges and universities offer their own scholarships, but you’re not limited to them. In fact, you might be surprised at the number and variety of college scholarships available to your child or grandchild – but to find them, you may need to do some digging. Find out what’s offered from foundations, religious, ethnic or community organizations, local businesses and civic groups. Also, ask the high school guidance office for information. Your own employer might even offer small scholarships.

You can find more information on scholarships on the U.S. Department of Education’s website. College-specific investments – You might also want to consider an investment designed to help you save for college. You have several options available, each with different contribution limits, rules and tax treatments, so you’ll want to consult with a financial professional to choose an investment that’s appropriate for your situation. Community colleges – Not every bachelor’s degree needs to begin and end at an expensive four-year college or university. Many students now fulfill some of their “general” education requirements at affordable community colleges before transferring to a four-year school – often saving tens of thousands of dollars in the process.

Paying for college is challenging. After all, for the 2018-19 academic year, the average annual cost (tuition, fees, and room and board) was $21,370 for in-state students at public four-year colleges or universities; for four-year private schools, the corresponding expense was $48,510, according to the College Board. And college costs will likely continue to rise over the next several years. But, as we’ve seen, by being proactive and having a plan in place, you can go a long way toward coping with these expenses and helping your loved ones enjoy the benefits of higher education.

Sister Spotlight-

Chiropractic care is beneficial for horseback riders!

Meet two of our favorite sisters: Cheyenne and Nicole!

Cheyenne is an avid horseback rider who enjoys everything from laid-back rides on the trails to competing in barrel racing. She has been barrel racing since 2010 and loves that when she enters the ring it’s just her, her horse and the timer. Cheyenne has three horses - George, Mikki and Flash. She grew up on a dairy farm in a small town and began riding as soon as she was able to walk. When Cheyenne first started care at Kinkaid Family Chiropractic, she had constant low back pain from horseback riding and farm work. After a barrel race, Cheyenne's low back pain would become so intense that she felt like it was impossible to even move. Cheyenne states that “Once I began going to Kinkaid Family Chiropractic for regular chiropractic adjustments, I have been able to compete pain-free!”

Nicole had the same upbringing as her little sister, Cheyenne. There are pictures of Nicole on a horse before she could even walk! Nicole began competing at the age of 10 and has continued to compete for the past 19 years. Nicole mostly rides western pleasure and hunter under saddle on the AQHA circuit. She has had numerous accomplishments from competing in jumping, trail equitation/horsemanship and showmanship. Nicole loves the bond that she has with her horses and competing at the national level. Unfortunately for Nicole, doing what she loved was accompanied by excruciating low back pain, neck pain and sciatic nerve pain that would radiate down her left leg. She had pain after riding multiple horses in a day or after driving long hours to get to and from a show. Her sister Cheyenne recommended that she go to Kinkaid Family Chiropractic to see Dr. Jessica Kinkaid and Dr. Ashley Busse. After just a few adjustments, Nicole stated “My sciatic nerve pain is almost completely gone and now I can lay down and fall asleep without pain at night!” If you or someone that you know is a horseback rider, they may benefit from chiropractic care, too.

Then

& Now

Suffrage By Susan E. Leath

Suffrage. What an interesting word. Merriam-Webster simply says “the right of voting.” The dictionary adds that the word is descended from the Latin word suffragium which can be translated as vote, support or prayer. Early supporters of the “woman vote” liked the word too. Just by itself, the word suffrage points to suffering and speaks of rage. New York has close ties to the woman suffrage movement going back to the first women’s rights convention held at Seneca Falls on July 19 and 20, 1848. The convention and its Declaration of Sentiments was the beginning of the formal movement with well known leaders such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and Susan B. Anthony. A road trip to the excellent Woman’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls and the Susan B. Anthony Museum and House in Rochester is well worth the effort.

COVER:

New York suffragists picket, January 26, 1917, perhaps in Washington, D.C. (Library of Congress) New York passed its legislation affirming women’s right to vote in 1917. The 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex, passed the House on May 21, 1919 and then the Senate on June 4. The amendment went to the states for ratification. Tennessee became the 36th state needed for ratification on August 18, 1920

making woman suffrage the law in all of the United States. Mississippi, the 50th state to ratify, did not do so until 1984. But what is the local Bethlehem connection to the Woman Suffrage Movement? That is proving frustrating to figure out. Hints are scarce in the local papers. There are plenty of references to the suffrage movement in general, and the anti-suffragists too, just not truly local specifics. For example, the May 29, 1914 issue of the Altamont Enterprise reported that “Mrs. Rosalie Jones of Albany was scheduled to speak at the Methodist Church in Clarksville on the interests of the suffrage movement.” The NewsHerald reported June 5 that at Clarksville “there was a crowded house to greet Miss Rosalie Jones.” Your historian likes to assume that this is in fact General Rosalie Jones. General Jones was widely known for her suffragist efforts especially her suffrage hikes. On December 16, 1912, the General and 200 of her followers left Manhattan and walked to Albany. That’s about 170 miles through a cold New York winter. They marched on the east side of the river, so did not pass through Bethlehem, arriving in Albany on December 28 where they worked to present their petitions and arguments to the Governor. The following February, Jones organized a hike from New York City to Washington D.C. to meet up with the many Suffragist marchers converging on the Capitol. It is probable that Jones was here in Clarksville, but who are the local men and women who packed the church in May of 1914? Similarly, Albany County Equal Suffrage clubs held a convention in June 1915 where it was reported that organizations were thriving in Delmar and that mass meetings had been held in Bethlehem. But who exactly attended? That remains a mystery. And what about the anti-suffragists? Some of the names in a July 10, 1914 clipping are familiar and local in the sense that Albany is local for us. A report under the Voorheesville section of the Altamont Enterprise reads “A meeting in the interests of all opposed to the granting of suffrage to women will be held here in the early autumn, should a group of men and women express their willingness to urge attendance. The Albany Anti-Suffrage society, in which such well known women as Mrs. George Douglas Miller, Mrs. Moneure C. Carpender, Mrs. Robert C. Pruyn, the Misses Fenimore-Cooper, Mrs. John Boyd Thacher and Mrs. George Curtis Treadwell are interested, will send representatives.”

1914 was a busy summer. The paper notes that at the Albany County Fair both the Equal Suffrage and AntiSuffrage clubs “vied good naturedly with each other and were well attended by their adherents and friends.” While not all that local, my very favorite clipping is from the June 11, 1915 issue of the Altamont Enterprise. The left-hand column of page 6 begins with Suffrage Day on the Diamond which was held May 11 during a baseball game between the Giants and the Cubs. “The fusion of suffrage and baseball interests certainly resulted in a great turnout for the game.” The suffragists were certainly creative in publicizing their cause. Immediately following that item is an anti-suffrage report where the anti’s make the argument that allowing women to vote will somehow cancel men’s votes. “Women will either divide on issues in proportion that men do. In which case they but double the vote without affecting the result, or they will vote in opposition to men, which case they nullify men’s votes.” (Which to my 21st century feminist ears does not quite make sense.) And then the best is the final item in the column. “Woman Garbage Collector. Garbage in Hastings-onHudson is to be removed by a woman, her bid for the

contract being lower than that made by any of her male competitors. She has announced that she expects to superintend personally her men and teams.” Another paper identifies this woman as Mrs. Mary Eliot. Here is a successful business woman competing for a contract in a field dominated by men. In 1915. I want to know her story. And finally, what object inspired this article? In the collection of the Bethlehem Historical Association is a Votes for Women banner that was donated anonymously in the 1980s. It was last displayed in the summer of 2017 during their centennial exhibit on World War I and the passage of New York’s suffrage law. Those familiar with BHA’s collection report no other references or objects related to woman suffrage. Readers, do any of you have family stories

about the battle for the vote for women? Letters, diaries, journals? Anything? I would love to hear from you!

Town historian Susan Leath’s new book, Bethlehem People and Places, explores Bethlehem, New York’s unique history through 36 illustrated articles.

Places ground our history. People make history lively. Come along on the journey as Leath follows her curiosity in her hometown of Bethlehem. Read about Victorian and vernacular farmhouses, and about the families that made these types of building home. Find out the story of World War I veteran John Adams Dyer, Hudson River light keeper Warren Welch and architect Grace Slingerland. Wonder about how Delmar got its name, and just where is the hamlet of Frazertown. Author Susan E. Leath was appointed Bethlehem Town Historian in 2007. She is continually inspired by the people who generously share their family history. Leath believes local history opens the way to the wider sweep of our national story. She invites you to be curious about the everyday people and places around you.

This postcard is titled “Miss Ida Craft as she tramped from New York City to Albany – on the hike for woman suffrage.” (Library of Congress)

CBD AND PETS

Cannabidiol (CBD), which comes from the hemp plant, is making headlines for reports that it can treat pain, anxiety, inflammation and even cancer in humans, but it's not just people lapping it up. CBD is popping up all over the place, including for cats and dogs, and pet owners are buying. The results on giving pets CBD have been anecdotal so far. Unfortunately, the popularity and marketing are outpacing the researching and regulation. The FDA is currently collecting information about marijuana and marijuanaderived products being marketed for animals. The FDA has also issued significant warning letters to companies selling CBD. The FDA reminds consumers that these products have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety and effectiveness and recommends that you talk with your veterinarian about appropriate treatment options for your pet. At this time there is no scientific data on the use or dosage for CBD in pets. Because CBD products at this time are not regulated, there is no way of ensuring the efficacy for various purposes, ranging from arthritis to anxiety or even seizure disorders. There are no current completed studies on dosage for CBD to correctly and effectively dose dogs or cats. The time may come when the science has true answers, but not now. In addition to dosage concerns, there's no accountability when it comes to what is actually in these CBD products. You cannot be certain it's derived from hemp, not marijuana, which is toxic to pets. As these products are not FDA regulated, there is also the potential that there is no actual CBD in the product. The intention is not to be a naysayer, because there is the potential for real possible benefits. CBD may be a wonderful product in the future if becomes regulated and we have actual scientific data. Until then, any products you are using now for your pets, you are doing so at your own risk. I heard a strange hissing sound when watching one of our Highway crews repave a road in Selkirk. The freshly laid and newly pressed asphalt was hissing. Crouching down I found out why: the asphalt was so hot that water was literally boiling off it. Since 1967 we have been providing Bethlehem with the freshest Cut Choice & Prime Meats in the area!

Our busy Highway crews are out in all kinds of weather. When temperatures are roasting, they’re out laying concrete sidewalks by hand and paving roads. When temperatures are freezing, they’re out chipping through frozen snowbanks to clear sidewalks. Bethlehem has 186 miles of Town roads, which is the distance from Delmar to a bit past Boston. And our Highway Department does a great job maintaining them. If you hit a pothole in Bethlehem, you’re almost assuredly on a state or county road (these are the ones with numbers, like Rte 9W and Delaware Ave, which is Rte 443).

One of the keys to this success is repaving the roads before they have potholes. I’m frequently asked why we’re repaving neighborhood streets that just have some cracks. It’s a reasonable question, especially given the mantra “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Fixing roads early allows us to only mill off and replace the top 1-2 inches of asphalt. If we were to wait until there were serious potholes, we’d have to remove all of the asphalt AND redo the road base. Not only does this take longer, it’s considerably more expensive. Our town roads are in great shape because our Highway crews are addressing problems before they happen. Even when temperatures are in the 90s and the asphalt is so hot that water boils off it.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

“Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn't carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.” -- Stephen King Greetings, constant readers, As I write this, summer is already half over! It has been my pleasure to assist so many readers here at Tattered Pages during July. I hold a special place in my heart for children, especially children who love to read. One of those phases of summertime that always makes me cringe is to hear any child say that they are bored! A CBS Sunday Morning commentator, Bunmi Laditan, addressed this condition beautifully in the past! She announced one summer to her children: “I need to explain something to you: You are bored. You are not sick. You are not a victim of misfortune. You are not undergoing great tragedy, nor are you in the midst of personal crisis. The discomfort you are experiencing is what previous generations referred to as "a state of rest." Boredom is an opportunity for something called, "free play."…You are human children with fully-functional imaginations. I'm going to need you to use them. Boredom is not a problem to be solved. It is an itch to be scratched. Boredom is the dawn of ideas. Boredom is curiosity knocking gently at your mind, asking to play. Boredom is infinite possibility.” My own children, as well as my students in fifth grade learned to never use the phrase: "I'm bored!" As a teacher, I would give each student a new pencil & a writing journal and a pep-talk very similar to the aforementioned commentary on the first day of school. Boredom is a state of rest that should give each individual pause to think. If you cannot occupy yourself, I feel sorry for you! I told my students that an inactive mind should be stimulated and the infinite possibilities can lie in music, artwork, physical activity, and reading! Books are still the most affordable method of entertainment. Without the constraints of time that “school” brings, summer often has looser time parameters. One has the time to stretch out in the shade, with a cool drink and a book. You can enter a world of intrigue, adventure, mystery, romance, humor, history, and so much more. If you haven’t read, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, I strongly suggest that you read it this summer and drift back to a hazy, southern summertime of crickets, cicadas & ice tea, while stepping back to that remarkable summer of Scout, Jem, Calpurnia, Dill, Atticus and Boo Radley. Actually, I was quite taken back when at Tony Award time, someone described To Kill a Mockingbird as a tale of the South and a rape trial defended by a well respected lawyer of the town. What! That is not how I would describe it! I remember that I read that for the first time when I was 12 and did a book report on it. From my perspective, then, and still now. I saw: Scout Finch recalling a most memorable summer with her older brother Jem, their northern friend, Dill, and the mystery of Boo Radley, a recluse who lived next door and left little treasures in an old tree near their property. Their well respected father, Atticus, was a defense lawyer involved in a case with racial tension and hatred. It was a tale of

memories, some hazy and some intense. It was a tale of growing up and seeing your father in a different light. It was about innocence, injustice and standing up for what is right. It is about focusing on a mystery...and the love of siblings. Does it address race, hatred, ignorance, injustice, fear, the way that those of the South in the 1930s were perceived, absolutely, but was it what I focused on, not at all when I was 12...it was as if the layers of the content peeled back with each time that I read it. What people have taken out of this novel has always amazed me. That is one of the reasons that I love the written word. It is always open to interpretation...what you bring to it...what you take from it. Your involvement with the author can become so special that it draws you to other books by them. At Tattered Pages, the books are in "genres", and fiction is in alphabetical order by author. The shop also has a data base of our inventory, which is like having an additional person working in the shop when it comes to finding if we have what you are looking for in stock. (I love Seamus as my business partner but this is not his forte!) What you choose to read is usually your own personal preference, though many have required summer reading selections from school. Many of my “required” readings still remain some of my favorite books even today. Tattered Pages holds about 15,000 titles all at reduced prices, even if they are brand new! I will order books, if they are not in stock, and always pass the savings on to you. The shop has been in this location for over1 2years and I would love to be here for many more, but so much of that depends on you, my dear readers. Please tell others about my shop and the services that I offer. You can find me on Facebook: Tattered Pages, LLC. Recent additions to the store are: classic Sci-fi by Philip K. Dick, 20 more Magic Treehouse books in hardcover and paperback, Pete the Cat and Li'l Monster books, and WWII history & historical fiction. I am currently in need of clean “board” books for babies & toddlers, as well as chapter books for children: Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and dystopian young adult fiction. I always need: “classic literature” as there is a huge turnover in books that are required reading in high school and college: by Austen, Bradbury, Hawthorne, Hemingway, Orwell, Steinbeck, and Vonnegut! I am also looking for novels by: Agatha Christie, Louise Penny, Jacqueline Winspear, Michael Connelly, Daniel Silva, Lee Child, Tolkien and Stephen King. I will look at 6 books at a visit for consideration of trade credits, and 12 childrens' books. Your trade credits accrue in a computer bank that will then take an additional 20% off future purchases. In closing, I want to thank all of my customers who have frequented Tattered Pages this summer. Tell a friend about my unique shop where Seamus & I are always up to helping you fight the dreaded boredom that may sneak up on you. We are always prepared to suggest a few good books. Until next month…Happy reading…Trish & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner~operator of Tattered Pages (est. 2006) 365 Feura Bush Rd. in the Glenmont Center Square. Open: M: 10-2, T,W: 10-5, Th.
