GEORGIA STATE SEASON PREVIEW With an all-conference senior among four returners to lead the way, Georgia State will welcome three freshmen to the mix and strive to improve to be ready for the Sun Belt Conference Championships and a chance at an automatic NCAA bid in April.

“Losing four seniors will cause some adjustment time and we will work day-by-day with attention to detail to get better and better as the year progresses,” coach Cathy Mant said in preparing for her 15th season at GSU and third in the Sun Belt Conference. “The team is a bright and dedicated group with good work ethic, talent and a positive attitude,” Mant noted. “With their commitment and preparation, it could add up where the end growth should be substantial and rewarding.” Lauren Court, the team’s lone senior, was All-Sun Belt second team in 2014 with three top-10 finishes and three low rounds of 71 last year. Court is a veteran of 24 collegiate tournaments and 70 rounds of golf, despite overcoming knee surgery in 2012-13. “Lauren improved six strokes in her season average over the past year, which shows her determination and skill,” Mant said. “She could really have a stand-out senior season with her talent and experience.” Junior Julie Lied could emerge as a top player as well, bringing 52 rounds of collegiate golf experience into her third season. Lied carded best rounds of 71 and a pair of 72s in 2013-14 to show her potential level of play. “Julie is one of the best ball strikers I have seen and with continued improvement in her short game could become one of the more exciting players to watch on our team.” Sophomores Jooeun Bae and Solene Le Coz got their first year of adjustment to college golf out of the way and understand the rigors and challenges at this level. Bae, from South Korea, and Le Coz, from France, gained plenty of amateur experience before compet-

ing in 2013-14 for Georgia State. Bae had a best-round score of 75 and Le Coz shot a pair of 74 rounds as GSU freshmen. “I was pleasantly surprised with their work ethic and positive attitude to try to improve their golf game,” Mant said. “I am proud of the way they prepare themselves to play and now it is time for them to step up a little more for us.” “The incoming talent will add to the success of our team, especially by the conference tournament time,” Mant noted in speaking of the recruit class of three freshmen. Emily Royer and Paula Zabarte come from England and Spain, respectively, to begin play in September with the team, while Magda Kruger will arrive from South Africa for the second semester in January. “I see tremendous potential in each of them and I realize it takes time to develop, so we’ll work daily to ensure they are in a position to succeed.” Mant, a former collegiate champion and LPGA veteran, is always prepared and has a plan. “This year, we are giving the team cards to write down their positives and their goals to focus on their individual growth,” she explained. “The mental part of the game of golf is important. I think this year’s team can grow faster and improve quicker than some teams in the past. Success breeds confidence and we’ll try to help each one find individual success.” The four-tournament fall season begins Sept. 15-16 at The Cardinal Cup in Louisville, Ky. and five days later the team plays in the Lady Paladin Invitational at Furman in Greenville, S.C. The Cardinal Cup opener with former American Athletic Conference champ and new ACC member Louisville marks the second time in three years GSU opens with this event. “The Furman field will also be challenging as teams like Florida State, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Kansas and area teams converge into a great event,” Mant said. 2014-15 Georgia State WOMEN’S GOLF

In the fall, GSU also competes at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate at East Carolina and the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah, S.C. in October. The spring schedule also includes four tournaments, starting Feb. 13-15 with the Florida State Match-Up in Tallahassee, Fla. GSU returns to The Sunshine State Feb. 23-24 for the Amelia Island Collegiate. A trip to Mesa, Ariz. for Notre Dame’s Clover Cup is next. “This tournament will pair us with teams we don’t usually see and be something different for the program, so we look forward to this one,” Mant noted. A season highlight is always playing host to the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate in March. “We’re excited to have this as a three-day event again and already have 15 teams entered,” coach said. “Eagle’s Landing is a fantastic course and gives us a chance to showcase a facility that is in great shape for competition.” The Sun Belt Conference Championship is again at Steelwood CC in Loxley, Ala. from April 13-15. “We always gear toward the conference tournament and want to be playing our best at that point,” Mant noted. “The knowledge of that course will be helpful for our returners and with the NCAA bid on the line, always important.” The NCAA Regionals are May 7-9 at four sites. Georgia State has earned six previous bids to the NCAA Regional in school history, most recently in 2009.

Head coach Cathy Mant has earned six NCAA regional bids and won five conference championships in her previous 14 seasons at Georgia State.

SIX NCAA REGIONAL BIDS

GEORGIA STATE PANTHERS

As the winningest coach in Georgia State golf history, Cathy Mant has established a national presence for Panther golf during her tenure. Mant will enter her 15th season at the helm in 2014-15 and an appearance at the NCAA Championship is still a goal Mant hopes to achieve. In 2013-14, Mant led the Panthers to three runner-up finishes, including the final regular season event, the GSU-hosted John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate. Georgia State garnered 91 wins during the year and set several records along the way, including the lowest round in program history, a 283, at the Palmetto Intercollegiate. Mant also watched the great improvement of her seniors, including Melissa Siviter and Maria Palacios who each won events during the regular season. Palacios along with Lauren Court and Laura Sanchez earned all-conference recognition. Prior to joining the Sun Belt Conference, Georgia State was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association for seven years where Mant led the Panthers to three conference championships (2010, 2009, 2006), three conference runner-up finishes (2011, 2008,

2007), and four NCAA Regional berths (2010, 2009, 2008, 2006). In addition, Mant was named CAA Coach of the Year four times in seven seasons (2010, 2009, 2008, 2006). Mant holds the distinction of being named CAA Coach of the Year more times than any other coach in conference history. In 2009, Mant added another award to her growing list of accolades as she was named NGCA East Region Coach of the Year. Over 14 seasons at Georgia State, Mant has amassed 21 team tournament victories, 22 individual medalist honors, won five conference titles, made eight NCAA Regional appearances (six team, two individual), and picked up six coach of the year awards as the first and only full-time women’s golf coach in school history. She has also watched 30 members of her squads earn all-conference recognition. As proud as she is of everything the team has accomplished on the course, she is equally as proud of the work off the course. Once again last year, the women’s golf team earned GSU’s highest team GPA award, handed out annually at the end of the year banquet. The team ranked 20th in the nation among golf teams with its GPA. Mant was named Georgia State’s first full-time women’s golf coach in September of 2000 and set immediate expectations for developing a nationally successful program at that point. Under Mant’s tuteledge, the program has produced four conference players of the year and seven individual conference champions. With her leadership and guidance, Mant helped Joanna Klatten become GSU’s first women’s golfer to qualify and compete

Accompanying that victory at Arizona State, Mant was named a Collegiate All-American and was inducted into the Arizona State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. Mant helped continue a strong tradition of success in the Sun Devils’ program, a tradition that now includes Joanne Carner, Heather Farr and Danielle Ammaccapane. After her collegiate days came to an end, Mant played on the LPGA Tour from 1976 to 1986. Mant’s best finish on the Tour was third at the Rail Charity Championship in Springfield, Ill. She played in 10 United States Women’s Opens, as well as each major on the LPGA Tour. Mant was highly involved in the LPGA player government and served as a player representative to the LPGA Board of Directors as well as the President of the LPGA Tournament Division in 1985. When she finished her LPGA career, Mant decided to devote her time and energy to a full-time teaching career. Former Georgia State women’s golfer Kimmy Graff was named the Panthers’ assistant coach prior to the start of the 2013-14 season. This past season, Graff helped guide Georgia State to three runner-ups finishes while two individuals earned their first career wins. The Panthers amassed 91 wins as the trio of Maria Palacios, Lauren Court and Laura Sanchez all earned all-conference recognition. Graff works on all aspects of the women’s golf program, including travel, practices and budget for the Panthers. She also writes and designs the team’s newsletter and oversees all aspects of social media for the team. Graff played for Georgia State and coach Mant in 201213 after three years competing at Mercer. In her one season playing with the Panthers, Graff competed in four tournaments, earning a season-best tie for 30th at the JMU Eagle Landing Invitational, where she shot a season-low 73 in the second round. While at Mercer, Graff competed in 19 events. Her career with the Bears was highlighted by a tie for 11th at the 2011 Atlantic Sun Championship. She was named all-state for four years at Killian Hill Christian School. She was the only female to compete in her division for golf, so she competed against the boys. Graff was the 2008 Georgia PGA Junior Player of the Year and Low Stroke. Her lowest competitive round was a 143 (71-72) to finish second. Graff is an extreme fitness enthusiast, spending time training and boxing when not on the golf course.

MARK P. BECKER Since beginning his tenure as Georgia State University’s seventh president in January 2009, Mark P. Becker has led the institution through a dynamic period of major growth and advancement. Under his leadership, the university adopted a comprehensive 10-year strategic plan aimed at making Georgia State one of the nation’s premier urban research universities. With a 10 percent increase in graduation rates in the last five years, Georgia State is achieving its vision of becoming a national model for undergraduate education by demonstrating that students of all backgrounds can succeed at high rates. The university has been recognized by the Education Trust for eliminating disparities in graduation rates based on race or ethnicity. Diverse Issues in Higher Education places Georgia State No. 1 in the nation among non-profit institutions in graduating African-American students and in the top 50 universities for graduating AsianAmericans. Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine lists Georgia State as a top 100 university for graduating Hispanics, making the university one of only two non-Florida universities in the Southeast to attain this achievement. During Becker’s tenure Georgia State has set a series of university records for retention and graduation rates, as well as for the retention of the Georgia Lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship. This progress has been achieved as enrollment has grown from about 28,000 to more than 32,000 students, and the number of applications to the university has steadily risen and now exceeds 13,000. Private scholarship funding has increased significantly, and the university has more than doubled the number of students receiving support in the last two years. Research funding is at an all-time high, increasing nearly 15 percent in the last year alone. Federally sponsored research now accounts for 62 percent of the university’s research portfolio, an important barometer of the university’s research success. This growth has been aided by the Second Century Initiative, a faculty hiring program that has led to the development of new 2014-15 Georgia State WOMEN’S GOLF

interdisciplinary research centers. Seeking to position Georgia State students and researchers to thrive in an increasingly complex and global landscape, Becker has worked with faculty leaders to enhance Georgia State’s international profile. The university is working in five countries in which it is focusing its university-wide efforts: Brazil, China, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey. Through its campus development, Georgia State is a major contributor to the revitalization of downtown Atlanta. Building on the work of former President Carl V. Patton, the university has expanded campus housing and dining, research and academic facilities. Georgia State enhanced its research capacity with the opening of the Parker H. “Pete” Petit Science Center in 2009 and is designing and building a second research building on the same site. The university enlarged its instructional capacity with a classroom expansion project completed in 2011. Student housing has almost doubled with the addition of Patton Hall, a Greek townhome complex, and the Piedmont North housing and dining complex. The opening of the $10 million football practice facility enabled Georgia State to introduce its football program in fall 2010. The purchase of 3.5 acres of land on the eastern edge of the campus has made it possible for the university to have its first intramural recreation fields on its downtown campus. The Sun Trust tower complex at 25 Park Place houses major units of the College of Arts and Sciences and the expanded university advising center. The university has a new front door for visitors with the opening last year of Centennial Hall at 100 Auburn Ave. The building houses Georgia State’s Welcome Center, university administration and the recently established Honors College. A new Law School building is nearing completion, and the university has acquired 55 Park Place, a high-rise building that will be the new home of the Robinson

College of Business and the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. Assuring that Georgia State is appropriately partnered in Atlanta and beyond, Becker serves on multiple civic, community and professional boards. Becker and his wife, Laura Voisinet, are significant contributors to the university. They are focusing their philanthropy primarily on scholarships for students but also support the university’s Library, the Rialto Center for the Arts and Georgia State’s Women’s Philanthropy Initiative. Prior to his appointment as president of Georgia State, Becker was executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. Before assuming that role, Becker spent three years at the University of Minnesota as a biostatistics professor, dean of the School of Public Health and assistant vice president of Public Health, Preparedness and Emergency Response. From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a professor and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He also has held academic appointments at the University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University. Becker earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State University in 1980, and his doctor’s degree in statistics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1985. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Towson State and Penn State have recognized him with distinguished alumnus awards. Becker grew up in Havre de Grace, Md., near Baltimore. He and his wife have two adult children, Matthew and Julia.

PRESIDENT and ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

THIRD YEAR IN SUN BELT

CHARLIE COBB WitH 16 YEARS COLLEGIATE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE, including the last nine years as the Director of Athletics at Appalachian State, Charlie Cobb will guide the rising Georgia State program at a crucial time. Georgia State University President Mark Becker ushered in a new era of Panther Athletics when he named veteran athletic administrator and “proven program builder” Charlie Cobb as Director of Athletics on Aug. 15, 2014. At Cobb’s introductory press conference, Becker noted the need for Georgia State to find a proven winner, someone who has built a winning program “the right way.” Becker said Cobb even took it a step further. “In fact, we got a bonus in this package. Not only is he a proven builder and proven winner with a track record of doing it in the right way, but he also has tremendous Atlanta roots,” Becker said. “He knows this community well, has worked in this city, knows what we are doing and the potential we have in this program.” The potential that Georgia State has shown was a significant draw for Cobb, and Becker saw a resume that was a perfect match to take the rising Panther Athletic Department to new levels. Since 2009, Georgia State has gone from not having a football program, to starting an FCS squad in 2010, to moving fulltime into the FBS and Sun Belt Conference in 2013 prior to Cobb’s arrival. Now, the next step awaits the Panthers, who won five conference titles in their first two years in the Sun Belt. With Cobb at the helm, they have set sights on growing their brand throughout Atlanta while becoming a perennial contender for the Bubas Cup, the league’s allsports trophy. Cobb came to Atlanta after spending nine years as Director of Athletics at Appalachian State. He prepared for the endeavor by serving seven years as a senior associate athletics director at NC State, his alma mater, and previously worked for six years in Atlanta. During those formative years, Cobb honed his business acumen with the At-

2014-15 Georgia State WOMEN’S GOLF

lanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. It was at those stops that he was instrumental in bringing the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) football championship, and the SEC and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) basketball championships to Atlanta. With his knowledge of Atlanta and experience in reshaping the image of a program, Cobb came to the Panthers at the perfect time with several significant athletic building projects on the horizon. High among the Panthers’ priorities are: a weight room and coaches offices at the football practice facility; a new basketball and volleyball practice facility; a dedicated academic performance center; and the University’s concept for taking over Turner Field to create a mixed-use area that also would house several Panther sports teams. Cobb has led successful programs by focusing on four pillars of his leadership philosophy: 1) relationships matter; 2) embrace the idea of achieving success; 3) be innovative; 4) create traditions. Those ideals helped him build and maintain a high-performing program at App State. The Mountaineers won three consecutive Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) national championships, the first three-peat in the history, early in Cobb’s tenure. They also brought home eight consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships (top men’s sports program in the Southern Conference) and four Germann Cup championships (top women’s program). Together, they earned the men’s and women’s awards in the same academic year four times, an unprecedented achievement in the conference.

23

Cobb helped create $50 million in facilities improvements in his nine years at App State, primarily behind the success of the Mountaineers’ fundraising efforts that reached all-time highs. Among the fundraising highlights was surpassing the $3 million mark for the first time in 2012-13. The jewel of the construction projects was the seven-story Appalachian Athletics Center, which includes new football offices and locker rooms, training facilities, study areas, club-level seating and 18 luxury suites. The fundraising campaign also produced new homes for Mountaineer baseball, softball and soccer, as well as a new indoor practice facility and renovations to the university’s Varsity Gym. The 46-year-old Cobb was a four-year letterwinner as a football player at NC State. A native of West Columbia, S.C., Cobb graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1990 and earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio in 1992. As a senior center, he was named to the All-ACC second team. He was an All-ACC academic selection and earned the Jim Tatum Award given to the ACC football senior with the highest grade-point average and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to a football player for integrity and sportsmanship. Cobb and his wife, Lindsay, have a son and daughter, 16-year-old Harrison and 13-year-old Branan. Lindsay Cobb was an All-ACC goalkeeper for the NC State women’s soccer team from 1988-90.

GEORGIA STATE PANTHERS

2013-14 YEAR IN REVIEW The Georgia State women’s golf team did not reach its ultimate goal of returning to NCAA Regional play, but it was definitely not a lost season by any stretch. Four seniors left the program moving in the right direction as head coach Cathy Mant brings in a young batch of talent for the 2014-15 season. A pair of Panthers earned low medalist honors during the season and Georgia State concluded the year with three runner-up finishes, leaving Mant optimistic about the future. “It was a unique year for us,” Mant said. “Collegiate golf is a team sport and so you are always looking to win as a team, but at the same point, we had a couple of special individual performances that we are definitely proud of and hope to use those wins as learning tools for the student-athletes we have returning and those who will join the program in the fall.” The season started with a 10th-place finish at the Lady Paladin Invitational, a good start against a tough field. It gave the team a chance to see what needed to be worked on and they quickly responded in the final three events of the fall. Just over a week later, Georgia State finished fourth at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational hosted by Mississippi State. Senior Maria Palacios finished seventh highlighted by a second round 69 and fellow senior Laura Sanchez placed 11th. The Panthers followed with a return trip to the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, an event the program has had great success over the years. This year would be no different as GSU finished third after shooting a final round 3-under, 285, which at the time tied for the lowest round in program history.

Sanchez led the way with a tie for eighth, while Palacios tied for 12th. It was the rest of the team who really helped in the final round as Lauren Court, Melissa Siviter and Julie Lied each shot final round 1-under 71s. The momentum carried the team into the Palmetto Intercollegiate, the final event of the fall. After a good start, including a second round 288, the entire team clicked in the final round. Led by Siviter, who shot a final round 67 to win the event, Palacios added a 69 to tie for fourth which guided the Panthers to a 5-under, 283, the lowest round in program history. It was Siviter’s first collegiate win as a Panther and led Georgia State to a second-place finish. “It was a great way to finish the fall,” Mant said. “We played really well and it left the team feeling great about themselves heading into the offseason. It was also special to see Melissa get a win.” The early part of the spring was not kind to Georgia State or for that matter most teams in the southeast as weather prevented the squad from really getting in the practice necessary to be as ready as they would like to start the season in Florida. The Panthers opened the spring with a 13th-place finish at the UCF Challenge, but all was not lost. “Opening the spring in Orlando was tough,” Mant said. “It was a really good field and we knew going in that we had not been able to put the time in that we would have liked because of the weather. However, it did give us a good chance to see what we needed to work on and nearly a month to do it before the next event.”

The practice paid off as Georgia State returned to Florida for the JMU Eagle Landing Invitational and finished second in a field of 16 teams. Palacios led the charge with a second-place finish and Court turned in an impressive tie for eighth. Siviter also had another strong performance with a tie for 13th that included a second-round 70. The solid play continued at the UALR Women’s Golf Classic as the Panthers tied for fifth in a 17-team field that included several Sun Belt foes. Palacios tied for seventh and Siviter and Sanchez finished among the top-16. Things were building for a strong finish to the regular season and into postseason play. Georgia State returned home for the 21st annual John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate at Eagle’s Landing Country Club. The Panthers did not disappoint and at the end, another senior picked up her first win as a Panther. Following an opening round 300, Georgia State responded with a second-round 288, highlighted by Palacios’ 2-under round and a 1-under performance by Court. Palacios responded again in the final round with even par 72 which was good enough to send her into a playoff for the individual title, a title that she would claim on the first playoff hole. As a team, Georgia State scored a runner-up finish to Campbell, a squad that advanced all the way to the NCAA Championship, but it was Palacios’ win that made the runner-up finish a little less heartbreaking. “We always want to win our home event, but I think the fact that Maria was able to win on our home course with so many fans in attendance was also special for everyone,” Mant said. “We wanted to win one for our seniors, but I think everyone took some pleasure out of seeing Maria’s victory after she had a special season.”

The Panthers concluded the season with a fifth-place finish at the conference championship, which was not what the squad had hoped for entering play. Palacios led the way with a tie for ninth, but the team never was able to use the momentum from earlier in the spring to make a run at the title. “I was proud of the fact that the team never gave up during the conference championship,” Mant said. “It was disappointing because they knew that they were better than they played, but sometimes the putts just do not fall the way you want. “It was a bittersweet way for the three seniors in the line-up to end their career, but they meant a lot more to the program than what one tournament could ever represent.” For her remarkable season, Palacios earned first team all-conference honors after being named Sun Belt Golfer of the Month for March. She finished the season with a 74.37 scoring average, the third-best mark in program history. Court and Sanchez were honored with All-Sun Belt Second-Team honors and Siviter was nominated for Academic All-America recognition. So as it can be seen, even though an appearance in NCAA Regional play was not achieved, a lot of good came out of the 201314 season for the Panthers.

Joanna Klatten (photo above) owns the best finish as an individual, tying for fifth at the 2006 NCAA West Regional and advancing to the NCAA Championship, the first Panther to qualify and play for a national championship in women’s golf. The Panthers made their first appearance in 2003, then made back-to-back appearances in 2005 and 2006, before three straight appearances as a team from 2008-10. Georgia State’s best finish as a team came in 2009, finishing in ninth and missing out on a spot in the National Championship by just one spot and four strokes. In both 2011 and 2012, Charlotte Lorentzen qualified as an individual for the NCAA Regional, meaning GSU has been represented in the postseason in eight times in the last 11 years.

john kirk panther intercollegiate

THIRD YEAR IN SUN BELT

Over the past 21 seasons, the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate has become the annual highlight on the Georgia State women’s golf schedule. The John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate was first played in 1993 at Northwood Country Club, the home of the Panthers until 1999. The tournament was founded by then-Georgia State golf coach Kevin Propst and assistant Kirk McQueen with extensive help and support from Northwood County Club club pro John Kirk. When John Kirk passed away after a battle with cancer, his name was added to the Panther Intercollegiate to honor his assistance and commitment to the Georgia State women’s golf program. After one year at Chateau Elan Golf Club in 2000, the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate moved to Eagle’s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga. and has remained there ever since. The first time the event was held at Eagle’s Landing, in 2001, the Panthers won the team title and Georgia State golfer Anna Molin took home medalist honors. Both occasions marked firsts at Georgia State’s home tournament.

Entering the 2015 edition of the event, the Panthers will look to return to their winning ways after winning three straight editions from 200810 and finishing second in 2014. The tournament will run March 29-31. The 54-hole tournament will be played as a par-72, with the course measuring 6,100 yards.

Georgia State took both the team and invididual titles at the 2010 John Kirk/Panther Intercolleigate.

GEORGIA STATE CAMPUS Located in the heart of one of America’s great cities, the Georgia State University campus has a profound influence on the changing landscape of downtown Atlanta. While the building blocks of the university will always be high-achieving students, world-class faculty and groundbreaking research, Georgia State boasts an ever-expanding and improving campus to accommodate that foundation. In the last decade, the Rialto Theater restoration, Student Center, Student Recreation Center, University Lofts, University Commons, Helen M. Aderhold classroom building, Parker H. Petit Science Teaching and Research Center and many other buildings have transformed the downtown cityscape at Atlanta’s core. The university has a new front door for visitors with the opening in 2013 of Centennial Hall at 100 Auburn Ave, and a new Law School building is nearing completion.

Georgia State is where city life meets campus life for a unique and exciting student experience. • Five residence halls housing over 4,000 students • More than 300 student organizations • Six campus dining locations • State-of-the-art Student Recreation Center

CAMPUS HOUSING Some of the finest housing facilities in the nation are on the Georgia State campus. Georgia State’s nationally-recognized and award-winning on-campus housing provides students with opportunities to connect with the university community with educational, cultural, recreational and social programs. The University Commons, opened in 2007, is a 4.2-acre complex of four buildings surrounding a landscaped courtyard. All units come with fully-equipped kitchens, furnished bedrooms and spacious living areas. The fall of 2009 saw the opening of Patton Hall, which is suite-style for 325 residents and includes an on-site dining facility. In 2010, GSU opened its first Greek housing, which consists of nine fraternities and sororities housed in three-story townhomes. Opened in 2011, the Piedmont North Complex houses approximately 1,100 residents and offers a traditional residence hall lifestyle with all the amenities one would expect from a premier housing program, including a dining facility. The University Lofts, opened in 2002, contain fullyfurnished, loft-style apartments that blend urban style with modern features. All residence halls feature a full range of amenities including study and community lounge areas, laundry facilities, 24/7 security patrols, on-site or nearby parking and more.

The Georgia State program is headed by Associate Director of Athletics Brad Horton. Also working directly with the women’s golf program is Britta DeLay, academic and tutor coordinator. Georgia State’s commitment to academic support and student-athlete development is paying dividends as the Panthers have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom. GSU’s studentathlete population has posted a combined cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the last six years.

THE SUN BELT AND GSU

G

eorgia State University started its climb to the highest levels of college athletics in 2012 when it announced it would join the Sun Belt Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Panther athletic department became eligible to win championships in every league-sponsored sport and a year later was fully reclassified to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

The Panthers’ choice for a new home was a simple process considering the trajectory of the Sun Belt Conference. With its mantra “Together We Rise,” the league exemplifies what has become America’s most up-and-coming collegiate athletics conference. Founded in 1976, the Sun Belt has adapted and evolved in its nearly 40-year existence. The league was originally formed as a home for some of the nation’s premier mid-major basketball teams. With the demand for a higher national profile, the league began sponsoring football in 2001. The move into the group of football playing conferences has given the Sun Belt Conference a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors and today the league has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics.

With the College Football Playoff included with the league’s other bowl arrangements, the Sun Belt Conference is tied to seven total bowl games. However, football is not the only sport that has seen recent success as all of the league’s sports have contributed to the “Rise” of the Sun Belt Conference. Georgia State put together one of the best performances in league history while winning the 2013-14 Sun Belt regularseason men’s basketball championship. Like women’s basketball, men’s teams earned three postseason bids in 2014. Baseball and softball also continue to be among the league’s standard-bearers for success. On the baseball diamond, the Sun Belt has sent up to four baseball teams to the NCAA tournament in a season, with UL Lafayette leading the way with a No. 1 national ranking in 2014. In softball, three teams have made the postseason, highlighted by the Ragin’ Cajuns who reached their sixth Women’s College World Series a year ago. Georgia State is looking to add to that success. So far, the Panthers have brought home league titles in women’s cross country (2012), men’s tennis (2013), men’s golf (2014) and women’s tennis (2014) in addition to the men’s basketball squad’s historic run. A total of 76 players earned All-Sun Belt recognition in the Panthers’ first two years back in the league.

The Georgia State Athletics Master Facilities Plan is a blueprint for success and growth for GSU Athletics that will allow every Panther program to compete at the highest level. A new weight room for football and an academic learning center are already being planned. Georgia State University also has a concept to purchase Turner Field and convert it to mixed use, including athletic facilities. A centerpiece of the Athletics Master Plan is the transformation of the GSU Sports Arena (left), the home of Panther basketball and volleyball as well as the athletics offices.

BOOSTER CLUB Friends of Panther Golf: Our golf team is able to be successful on and off the course with the very special support from the Eagle’s Landing Booster Club members and others who have donated both their time and money to help support our squad. With six NCAA Regional appearances since 2003, the Georgia State women’s golf program has become one that is synonymous with success and excellence. From our first team to reach the NCAA Regional in 2003 to watching a member of our squad play for a national championship in 2006, we are going to continue to strive to bring in the best recruits who will allow us to reach our ultimate goals. We are currently setting the foundation for what we hope will be many more years of success on and off the course and we must thank you for helping us grow into a premier national program. We have come a long way since I first started here, but we still have a lot that we would like to accomplish. Personally, I know what it takes to help our young ladies get to the next level, but without the resources, including things like a short game practice facility, it will truly be very difficult. We can be good, but it will

be difficult to be great. We have a solid nucleus of young ladies this year who are looking to bring a another conference championship to Georgia State along with a sixth NCAA Regional appearance. I can honestly say from day one of the 2013-14 season, we have improved tremendously. We have recruited excellent young players and students for our 2015 class. The future is bright for Georgia State Golf and we want you to be a part of it. As I continue to build our program at Georgia State, I look forward to meeting each and every one of you who has supported the program. I hope that you will continue to support what we are building here, making Panther golf one of the best in the country! If I can ever answer any of your questions, please do not hesitate to call me in my office (404-413-4066) or on my cell (404-556-2310). I want as much interaction and discussion with our fans and booster club as possible, as that is how we will achieve our best results! Sincerely, Coach Cathy Mant
