MARK P. BECKER GSU PRESIDENT
S
ince beginning his tenure as Georgia State University’s seventh president in January 2009, President Mark P. Becker has provided a vision for the future of Georgia State University and led the institution into a period of marked growth and advancement. Reflecting his vision of the urban public research university for the 21st century, the university adopted a dynamic 10-year strategic plan that has Georgia State well on its way to becoming one of the nation’s premier urban research universities. As a first generation college student who began his educational career at a community college, Becker is personally and professionally committed to ensuring that students of all economic backgrounds succeed and are given opportunities to compete on a level playing field. Under his leadership, Georgia State’s graduation rate has already increased by 10 percent, and the university is becoming a national model for undergraduate education. It leads the nation in eliminating disparities in graduation rates based on race or ethnicity, and, as one of the most diverse universities in America, is first in the nation among non-profit institutions in graduating AfricanAmerican students. By promoting the achievements of the university, making it more visible locally and nationally, and demonstrating the value of a Georgia State degree, the university under Becker’s leadership has set a series of university records for enrollment, graduation rates and total graduates. Becker has also placed high priority on ensuring financial support for students, and as a result need- and meritbased scholarship funds distributed by the university have tripled since his arrival. Becker’s passion for student success has been matched by his commitment to increasing multidisciplinary research and economic development as facilitated by the creation of new research centers, the Second Century Initiative—an ambitious program to hire one-hundred senior faculty members to serve in interdisciplinary research clusters, and an enhanced emphasis on the translation of faculty research into products and companies. This commitment has brought the university to new heights of research accomplishment, as reflected, for example, in new university records for sponsored research funding and federal research funding. Being globally connected and engaged is another important component of Becker’s 6 6
vision for the modern research university. Seeking to position Georgia State faculty and students to thrive in an increasingly complex and global landscape, Becker has worked with faculty leaders and international partners to enhance Georgia State’s global profile. In 2010 the university partnered with Beijing Language and Culture University to establish a Confucius Institute with an emphasis on business and commerce. In 2012 the institute was named a “2012 Confucius Institute of the Year.” Becker is particularly committed to developing strong partnerships with universities in rapidly growing economies. As a result, the university is working to strengthen relationships with counterparts in Brazil, China, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey. These partners are the basis for the development of new student and faculty exchanges, study abroad programs, research collaborations, executive training initiatives, government and private sector networks, and dual-degree programs. Becker has aggressively advanced the campus’ physical development and revitalization of downtown Atlanta. This has included major additions to campus housing and dining, research and academic facilities, as well as intramural and athletics facilities. In 2010 the university added football to its athletics program, and in 2013 added sand volleyball and moved to the Sun Belt Conference to advance into the Division I – FBS level of NCAA competition. Throughout his career Becker has served on boards and committees of civic, government and professional bodies. He serves, for example, on the boards of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities, World Affairs Council of Atlanta, Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Aquarium, Georgia Research Alliance, Woodruff Arts Center, and the Atlanta Committee for Progress. He also serves on the executive committees of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education (Chair) and Central Atlanta Progress. Trained as a statistician, Becker has had a distinguished career in biostatistics and public

health sciences. For most of his professorial career he was a member of the faculty in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan, where he also held appointments in the Institute for Social Research, and the Department of Statistics. He was made a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Becker has been principal investigator on research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. He has published extensively in leading journals, and his doctoral students have gone on to successful careers in leading higher education institutions and with multinational companies. Becker served on multiple editorial boards, was co-editor of Sociological Methodology, and was a guest editor for Sociological Methods and Research and for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Prior to his appointment as president of Georgia State, Becker was executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina and dean of the School of Public Health and assistant vice president of Public Health Preparedness and Emergency Response at the University of Minnesota. From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a professor in the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health, where he also was associate dean for academic affairs. He has held academic appointments at the University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University. Becker attended Harford (Md.) Community College, earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State University in 1980 and his Ph.D. degree in statistics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1985. Becker grew up in Havre de Grace, Md., near Baltimore. He and his wife, Laura Voisinet, have two adult children, Matthew and Julia.

CHERYL L. LEVICK D I R E C TO R O F AT H L E T I C S
A
highly respected administrator with over two decades of experience guiding programs to the highest level of NCAA play, Cheryl L. Levick has successfully combined athletic and educational opportunities for students since the start of her career in collegiate athletics.
As Georgia State’s Director of Athletics, Levick has helped boost the Panthers’ visibility on the national stage in multiple sports while adhering to the athletic department’s mission statement of shaping champions for today and leaders for tomorrow. The transformation of the Panther Athletics Department has been remarkable under Levick. Each program has been enhanced or in the case of football, built from scratch – the program had one player, two helmets and seven coaches when she arrived in 2009. Now it is set to compete at the FBS level in just its fourth season. To make that jump in schedule and talent, Levick hired Trent Miles away from his alma mater in December 2012 after he constructed an impressive – if not totally improbable – turnaround at Indiana State. Miles was not the first high-level coaching hire Levick successfully maneuvered for the Panthers as she also plucked Ron Hunter out of the state of Indiana in 2011. He quickly revitalized Georgia State basketball with its first postseason berth in a decade in his first year, and now has Panther fans eagerly awaiting the 2013-14 campaign. The significant imprint Levick has created at GSU can be seen across the entire athletic department. She has put Georgia State in position to compete for league titles right off the bat as it fully moves into the Sun Belt Conference in 2013-14. Last year, GSU squads won two SBC team crowns to put the conference on notice that the Panthers are not just
moving up, but they are ready to win from the start. Levick’s tenure in sport-crazy Atlanta has been marked by significant upgrades in facilities and fundraising. Annual giving to the Panther Athletic Club (PAC) has steadily increased by more than tenfold, and the three largest gifts in the history of GSU athletics have been secured. Construction projects have included the GSU Football Practice Complex, new facilities for strength and conditioning and sports medicine, and upgrades to every venue used by the Panthers. Arguably the most impressive project to date is the state-of-the-art facility for sand volleyball, the Panthers’ most recent sport addition. It was finished in time for the inaugural season in 2013, and is part of the ambitious Athletics Master Facilities Plan that Levick developed to address needs for every sport. Continuous success has been seen in the classroom as Georgia State student-athletes have excelled in recent years. Together, Panther student-athletes have recorded a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0 for 10 consecutive semesters while completing more than 5,000 hours of community service annually. Levick has been a significant proponent of providing opportunities for women in college sports. She started the Women, Sports and Power Luncheon to raise money for women’s sports by female donors, an event that has been successful at each of her previous stops as athletic director. The event helped raise $50,000 for GSU women’s teams in 2013.

In 2011, Levick was named a “Game Changer” among women in sports business by the SportsBusiness Journal, and she was twice (1998 and 1999) named one of the nation’s Top 25 Female Sports Executives by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal. The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) also named her Division I Athletic Administrator of the Year in 2001. Levick came to Georgia State from Maryland, where she served as chief of staff/ executive senior athletic director while overseeing the day-to-day management of the 27-sport program. That came after serving three years (2004-07) as director of athletics at Saint Louis, where she led the Billikens’ transition to the Atlantic 10 Conference and was the lead fundraiser for an $80 million on-campus arena and practice complex. In four years (2000-04) as director of athletics and recreation at Santa Clara, Levick oversaw a major renovation of the school’s basketball arena and saw the Broncos’ women’s soccer team capture the 2001 national championship. It is still the only NCAA team title in school history. Levick spent 12 years at Stanford as senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. She was the primary administrator for 33 varsity programs that won 44 national championships and helped Stanford to six straight Sears Cup titles. She also served as assistant commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference, assistant director of communications and women’s programs at the NCAA, women’s gymnastics coach and associate athletic director at Slippery Rock, and assistant gymnastics coach and synchronized swim coach at Indiana. Levick began her career at Pattonville Senior High School in St. Louis, Mo., coaching gymnastics and women’s track. Levick is a 1974 graduate of Missouri, and holds a master’s degree in athletic administration from Indiana. She has two daughters: Heather and husband Michael Klass with grandson Brady born in July 2013; and Melissa and husband Jason Lake.

A
fter more than a year’s worth of anticipation, the wait finally ended. On July 1, 2013, the Georgia State Athletic Department officially became a full member of the Sun Belt Conference and now competes for championships in 14 league-sponsored sports.
“We look forward to playing a leadership role in the Sun Belt Conference and our teams competing for Sun Belt titles and postseason berths,” Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick said. “It really is a tremendous day in Georgia State sports history.” GSU’s move onto a national stage in all sports officially began on April 9, 2012. At a press conference inside the Georgia Dome, Sun Belt Conference officials joined Georgia State President Mark Becker and Levick at the public announcement of the Panthers’ impending conference move. A feasibility study begun in the fall of 2011 concluded the Panthers were well positioned to make the jump to the FBS level and that the Sun Belt would be an ideal fit. The rest has been history. The move allows GSU to build on regional rivalries with several schools within driving distance, while also showcasing its talented teams to the country. It is a return home of sorts for Georgia State, which was a founding member of the Sun Belt Conference in 1976. At that time, the league consisted of six universities playing across four men’s sports – basketball, soccer, tennis and golf. Today, the Sun Belt Conference sponsors 18 sports, including 14 that the Panthers will vie for conference titles. On the men’s side, GSU will compete in baseball, basketball, football, golf and tennis, while women’s sports include basketball, golf, cross country, soccer, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and court volleyball. GSU has also announced plans to add women’s swimming and diving. The Panthers already own two Sun Belt Conference titles in the past year. Ten individual sports were accepted into the league for 2012-13, giving the women’s cross country and men’s tennis teams a leg up on collecting hardware. Each squad won the Sun Belt title and helped Georgia State finish ahead of two SBC schools in the 2012-13 Vic Bubas Cup standings (an all sports trophy) despite competing in only half of the league’s sports.

he Georgia State University campus features some of the finest housing facilities in the nation. On-campus housing continues to grow, and more than 4,000 GSU students now live on campus.
The University Commons, opened in 2007, is a 4.2-acre complex of four buildings surrounding a landscaped courtyard. All units come with fully-equipped kitchens, furnished bedrooms and spacious living areas. During the fall of 2009, Patton Hall opened to provide suite-style living for 325 residents and includes an on-site dining facility. In 2010, GSU opened its first Greek housing, which consists of nine fraternities and sororities housed in three-story townhomes. Opened in 2011, the Piedmont North Complex houses approximately 1,100 residents and offers a traditional residence hall lifestyle with all the amenities one would expect from a premier housing program, including a dining facility. The University Lofts, opened in 2002, contain fullyfurnished, loft-style apartments that blend urban style with modern features. All residence halls feature a full range of amenities including study and community lounge areas, laundry facilities, 24/7 security patrols, on-site or nearby parking and more.

he Panthers work year round on their overall conditioning. Yolanda Berryhill and Devin Vernick, Speed, Strength & Conditioning sssistant coaches, provide a wealth of experience and work directly with the cross country and track & field program. They assure that the studentathletes are trained properly to get the most out of their abilities. The Panthers train in a 3,000-square foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment. They are advised on nutrition and given dietary advice to perform at a maximum level.

n institution on the rise, Georgia State University has a tradition of progress that is reflected in its rising stature, growing campus and broadening influence. The Georgia State Athletics Master Facilities Plan is a blueprint for success and growth for GSU Athletics that will allow every Panther program to compete at the highest level.

Formed in 1976 the Sun Belt Conference quickly rose to the greatest heights of collegiate athletics and the league continues to find itself at the pinnacle of competition as a member of the 10-league alliance of the Bowl Championship Series and soon-to-be College Football Playoff. Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines. The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its member institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a new multiyear agreement with ESPN, Inc. in 2012 that results in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Fans of the Sun Belt Conference can look forward to seeing more Sun Belt teams playing on national television on ESPN and ESPN2 and additionally the ESPN deal will result in more coverage on ESPNU. ESPN will continue to televise the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 32nd straight season in 2013, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country. The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television expo-

Success has been easy to find in recent years as well. Over the last five years the Sun Belt Conference ranks sixth out of the 11 FBS conferences in postseason bowl game winning percentage. In fact, the Sun Belt Conference ranks ahead of noted “BCS AQ” leagues – the ACC, Pac-12 and the Big Ten. The Sun Belt Conference maintains tie-ins with the GoDaddy Bowl and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. A team from the Sun Belt Conference has played in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl since its inception in 2001. The SBC has won four consecutive R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl games and six out of the last seven. The GoDaddy bowl, meanwhile, has a four-year agreement in place with the Sun Belt Conference and MidAmerican Conference to provide teams for the game. Sun Belt student-athletes have a history of performing well in the class room as well. With sights set on raised benchmarks, 96.2% of teams that will make

up the 2013-14 Sun Belt Conference are performing above the future Academic Progress Rate (APR) standard of 930 as the NCAA released its latest figures in June. Beginning with 2012-13 NCAA Championships, teams must earn a minimum 900 four-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years to be eligible to participate. For 2014-15 championships, teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in championships. In 2015-16 and beyond, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships. 153 of 159 Sun Belt teams are currently performing above the 930 benchmark. Prominent Sun Belt alumni include Lyndon B. Johnson, former President of the United States (Texas State), former All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (LouisianaLafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (Louisiana-Monroe), CEO of Duck Commander and Buck Commander Willie Robertson (Louisiana-Monroe) and DeMarcus Ware, an All-Pro NFL linebacker (Troy). The Sun Belt Conference has eight football members for 2013-14 – Arkansas State, Georgia State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, South Alabama, Texas State, Troy and Western Kentucky University, while UALR and UT Arlington compete as non-football members. Come the 2014 season, the Sun Belt will have four new members in the league as Appalachian State and Georgia Southern will join as all-sports members and Idaho and New Mexico State will join as football playing members.

eorgia State University is committed to providing educational, personal and community development that will enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience.
Georgia State’s Student-Athlete Development department became just the second in the nation to be certified at the highest level by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics. The Georgia State program is headed by Associate Director of Athletics Brad Horton (photo left). ACADEMICS FIRST: The cross country and track & field teams receive indidivual attention to maintain specific pursuits of college degrees. The academic advisor coordinates Learning Lab study hours for the student-athletes, sets up tutor sessions as needed and even travels with the team sometimes to monitor study sessions or testing. The advisor monitors thei registration of their needed classes to keep them on the track for the degree.
Georgia State’s commitment to academic support and student-athlete development is paying dividends as the Panthers have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom. GSU’s student-athlete population has posted a combined cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the last five years.

Second Year in Sun Belt Brings Higher Expectations Georgia State moves into its second year in the Sun Belt Conference in both indoor and outdoor track, competing for league championships indoors in late February in Birmingham and outdoors in May in San Marcos, Texas.. Head coach Chris England has a roster of 28 competitors and hopes the quality and talent helps gain points up and down the roster. “I think we have 28 talented student-athletes who can all be top eight finishers or better in their respective events,” England noted. “That talent is our strength, but we won’t have people competing in all the field events and will need to take full advantage of what strengths we have.”

Outdoors, the team continues to build off the 2011 CAA championship that excelled in the track portion, too. “We are probably a little stronger outdoors due to the nature of the events because our recent history in many of those events has shown success and translated to points,” England said. Consistent improvement is always a challenge. The team broke four school records last year. “That trend is always there for the student-athletes to each measure up and improve their personal best and strive for the school record,” England pointed out. The Georgia State program is also about the education and degree, as well as the timed and measured competitions.
Nine of the 28 are new to the GSU track and field program this year. “We’re building a stronger team atmosphere and better morale now and I am a firm believer in passion and attitude being key ingredients to success,” England said.
“Our team GPA has been solid and on the rise five straight semesters and we are among the leaders on our campus and in the Sun Belt in academics. This is an area of pride and an important area we will always provide support and encouragement.”

The coaching staff of England returns Travis Coleman in the throws and multi-events, while adding veteran coach Lena Bettis to oversee the sprints, hurdles, relays and horizontal jumps.
For GSU in the Sun Belt, the indoor track championship meet last year was the first in school history. “We hope to get comfortable competing in those indoor events and work our way toward the top,” England said.
“We have a master plan across the board and the coaching staff works hard to help the student-athletes reach their goals and perform their best.”

SPRINTS/HURDLES With four returning senior sprinters who made up the championship 4x100 relay team at last year’s Sun Belt outdoor championship, this area is solid. “We look for big things from this group and have high goals for them,” England said. “They will be expected to carry their weight and help the team’s younger members learn how to train hard and then compete hard.”

Senior Anna Sinclair was fourth last year in the steeplechase and fifth in the 5,000m race at the Sun Belt Championship and will look to make her final track season an outstanding one. Senior Jennifer Rubel was All-Sun Belt in cross country as a junior and placed fifth at the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship. She’s another strong 5,000m and 10,000m runner for the Panthers.
Wande Brewer, Gabby Brooks, Talia Colbert and Tatiana Colbert made up the championship relay team and will be seeking a repeat. Others capable of scoring in the sprints and hurdle events include sophomore Ravin Gilbert, junior Carole Idolphine, sophomore Tyra Jamison, senior Tamara Moore, sophomore Jasmyne Robinson and senior Kristiana Towns. Redshirt senior Tamara Moore gives the team a strong performer in the hurdle events. Moore has been an All-Region performer and a CAA conference champion in the hurdles. Junior Tyra Jamison will compete in the hurdles for her first season at GSU. MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE Georgia State’s strong cross country program feeds into this strong area for the team. “We have multiple all-conference veteran performers returning in this area and we are excited to see what they can accomplish in 2014,” England said. GSU’s 2012 Sun Belt cross country champion, Katharine Showalter, returns for one final track season after sitting last year’s season out with an injury. This year’s third-place finisher at the Sun Belt cross country meet, junior Hannah Stefanoff returns and is a strong 5,000m and 10,000m runner.

2014 Season Preview Depth also comes from freshman Mackenzie Nail, junior Carina Nieto and senior Katie Papesh. “We just need some good health and steady improvement all spring and this group should be strong come the May championship meet,” England said.
“We’ll look for this group to move up and score some points for us at the conference meets, too,” England said. Senior Gabby Brooks was top 10 last year at the Sun Belt outdoor meet in both the triple jump and the long jump. Senior Tatiana Colbert has shown improvement in the long jump and is capable of scoring as well. Sophomore Katharine Randolph will join the competition here and try to have an impact.
THROWERS This group of seven throwers improved with the addition of five freshmen competitors, but the group includes several solid leaders as well. “This is our youngest area on the team, but it has the potential for instant success,” England said. “The veteran of this group is junior Carresa Reeves, who I think can re-set the Georgia State record books,” England noted. Senior LaTasia Franklin comes across town from Clark Atlanta to join GSU. The five freshmen include Tracy Dorcemont, Kelsey Gray, Alexandria Jackson, LaPorscha Wells and Alysiah Whittaker. “We really look forward to seeing what this group can do now and for the next four years,” England added. Jumps AND MULTIS The Panthers have a trio of returning jumpers and a veteran in the heptathlon and pentathlon.
Junior Aniya Moore was eighth in the heptathlon at last year’s Sun Belt championship and the school record-holder in the pentathlon. Schedule Georgia State will run six indoor meets at the CrossPlex venue in Birmingham, Ala., the site of the Sun Belt Indoor Championship Feb. 24-25. “That is a state of the art facility and leads to good times and competition,” England said. “This is the first time the Sun Belt is holding this at a neutral site, so that is good, too.” The outdoor track and field season includes trips to meets at Auburn, Florida, USF in Tampa, Georgia Tech, as well as Sun Belt rival Troy. The Sun Belt Meet will be hosted by Texas State in San Marcos from May 9-12. “We have schedule top-notch competition to push and challenge our athletes against great individual competitors,” England added. “The best way to get better is to compete and measure up against the best and we’ll do that as we lead up to the all-important Sun Belt meet”.

Currently in his fourth season at Georgia State, Chris England serves as head coach for both the Panther cross country and track and field teams. In 2013, the GSU cross country team was again ranked in the top 15 in the South Region. The team was one of four ranked teams in the Sun Belt and finished fourth at the conference championship at Troy. A pair of GSU runners, juniors Hannah Stefanoff and Niamh Kearney, finished third and seventh in the championship race to earn first and second-team All-Sun Belt honors. Stefanoff improved five places to finish 45th of the 194 runners at the NCAA South Region race. In the first season of track and field in the Sun Belt, GSU had five runners earn All-Sun Belt Conference recognitiion...The team finished seventh, scoring heavily on the track, but simply not having entrants in most of the field events to move higher in the team score. His teams consistently rank near the top of all GSU teams in academic achievement.

In 2012, England was the Sun Belt Coach of the Year after guiding the women’s cross country team to Sun Belt championship in the team’s inaugural appearance in this conference. Top runner Katharine Showalter was the Sun Belt individual champion and became the fourth GSU runner to compete in the NCAA Championship meet. England came to Georgia State as head cross country coach in March 2010 after serving three seasons in the same role at Murray State. He was elevated to interim track and field coach during July 2011 and was promoted to the position permanently in 2012. In the first three seasons under his guidance, the Panther cross country teams have captured 13 conference runner of the week awards,eight All-CAA honors, one All-District distinction, the 2011 women’s CAA Rookie of the Year and the 2012 Sun Belt Runner of the Year. England revived the dormant GSU Cross Coun-

assistant in the athletics department, and then at Boise State, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams.
During his first season in charge of the track and field program, the women’s team took third place at the CAA meet, winning four individual titles and earning 11 All-CAA honors. The awards included Most Outstanding Track performer Tamara Moore, who finished first in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
While competing for the Buckeyes, England was a twotime All-American in 1997 in the indoor 5,000 and outdoor 10,000 meters and earned multiple All-Big Ten accolades.
Murray State Experience England guided the Murray State women’s cross country program to second place at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009 — the program’s highest finish in nearly two decades. England’s distance runners helped Murray State to third-place showings at both the indoor and outdoor conference track and field championships in 2009. In 2009, England coached the OVC Athlete of the Year for both indoor and outdoor track in Katelyn Jones (indoor) and Taylor Crawford (outdoor). Crawford was additionally honored as the top female athlete at the indoor and outdoor championship meets, and both runners qualified for the 2009 NCAA regional. Jones was previously named OVC Freshman of the Year for indoor track in 2008. Ohio State Experience Before his stint at Murray State, England served as an assistant to the head cross country coach at his alma mater, Ohio State. In addition to working with numerous Big Ten champions and Olympic hopefuls, he served as meet manager for the Jesse Owens Classic and director for the Ohio State Cross Country Camp.

He still holds the Ohio State record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:43.42 and is second all-time in the 10,000 meters with a 29:01.29 and an indoor 5,000m of 13:58.94. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ohio State in 1997 and completed a master’s in geography at Murray State in 2009. Professional Running Experience After college, England ran professionally and trained fulltime for the Olympic Trials. As a professional runner, he was nationally ranked and competed in distances from the mile to the marathon in elite races all across the United States and around the world. In 2006, he won a USA Track & Field (USATF) national title. He has earned USATF Level II and Level I coaching certifications. . Military Experience England served three years on active duty in the U.S. Army. During his military service, he competed on the Army World Class Athletic Program cross country and track and field teams and was a member of the Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), representing the U.S. Armed Forces in competitions around the world. Lena Bettis joined the GSU program in July 2013 to assist in all track and field and cross country student-athletes and program operations. Bettis came to Atlanta after a successful year in assisting with the sprints, hurdles and relays at Mississippi where she coached freshman Asia Cooper to a sixth-place finish at the SEC indoor championships and an All-America and eighth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, Bettis tutored Olympian, school-record holder and one of Ole Miss’ most decorated athletes, Isiah Young, to a gold medal finish in the 200m (20.20) at the SEC Championships. Bettis helped assemble one of the best recruiting classes in Ole Miss history.
Former Winthrop thrower Travis Coleman joined the Georgia State cross country and track and field program in July 2012 as an assistant coach in charge of throws, multi-events and vertical jumps. He assists with program operations for both sports. In his first season with GSU, Coleman helped with the inaugural Sun Belt cross country championship team and the seventh-place finish for the track and field team among the 12 Sun Belt schools at the outdoor championship. Aniya Moore set a Georgia State school record for scoring in the pentathlon under Coleman’s guidance. Moore also finished eighth at the Sun Belt Conference championship.
Previously, Bettis spent two years at Michigan State, working primarily with the jumpers. She helped develop Tori Franklin and Ashley Stacey into record-setting jumpers. In 2012, Franklin set a school record in the triple jump and earned indoor and outdoor All-America honors.
Carresa Reeves established her personal bests in both the shot put and discus. Kesean Henderson set her personal best in the weight throw, while setting a school record and then broke it multiple times over the course of the season.
In 2011, Stacey achieved a school record in the long jump and advanced to the NCAA Championships after scoring in the long and triple jumps at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
After competing four years for the Winthrop Eagles, Coleman remained at Winthrop two years as a graduate assistant coach.
Bettis spent the previous two seasons as a volunteer assistant at her alma mater Penn State. The Riverside, Calif., native was a four-year letter-winner in track and a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier for the Nittany Lions. She was a member of the school-record and collegiate-record sprint medley relay squad. In her final year of eligibility, Bettis posted a career-best leap of 42 feet in the triple jump at the 2008 Big Ten Championships, aiding in the Nittany Lions’ first of three straight Big Ten outdoor team titles. Under the tutelage of Bettis at Penn State, Tanaya Lloyd reached the 40-foot mark for the first time in her career. Lloyd also qualified for the NCAA Regional as a sophomore in the triple jump. Bettis also aided in the development of Bianca Fung into a two-time NCAA qualifier in the long jump. Fung qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Fung continued her progress as she once again qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a leap of 20-8 at the NCAA First Round. Bettis graduated from Penn State in 2008 with a degree in broadcast journalism and minors in women studies and movement science.

During the 2012 season, Coleman guided the throwers and jumpers to four all-sconference selections and one NCAA Regional qualification. At Winthrop, Coleman was the 2009 Big South Conference champion in the shot put as well as a six-time All-Big South selection. He was a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier and still holds school records in the indoor shot put, outdoor shot put and the hammer throw. Coleman graduated from Winthrop in the spring of 2010 with a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. He completed his masters’ in education during the spring of 2012. The West Milford, W.Va. native was a three-time state champion in the shot put and discus while at Robert C. Byrd High School in Clarksburg.

Georgia Southern Decatur OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD GEORGIA SOUTHERN 2011-2013 Transfers to Georgia State for a final year of college eligibility in her home town after spending the start of her career at Georgia Southern. She has run a 58.78 in the 400 meters and has been part of successful 4x400 relay units. Her relay team was second in the Southern Conference indoor championship meet and also had a best time of 3:50.60. PREP The Atlanta native was a four-time track and field team most valuable player at Decatur High School under coaches Toni Bennett and Freddie Jones. eorgia State track and field competed in the Sun Belt Conference for the first time during the 2013 season and broke four school records during the indoor season..
. The Panthers finished in seventh place at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships, setting a benchmark that will be improved upon in subsequent seasons in the Sun Belt.
After competing in the CAA for seven seasons, Georgia State announced a transition to the Sun Belt conference in 2013. All individual sports, including cross country and track and field, were allowed to move to the new conference a season earlier than expected.. . INDOOR SEASON In their first indoor track and field championship, Georgia State placed seventh out of 12 teams at the Sun Belt meet in Jonesboro, Ark. on Feb. 24-25, hosted by Arkansas State. The distance runners contributed 27 of 31 points for the GSU at the conference championship.. . The Panthers’ previous conferences did not support indoor conference championships, so the experience was entirely new for Georgia State. But the team can build on this start into the program’s promising future. GSU set four school records during the indoor season. Katharine Showalter had two of the new marks in the mile and 5,000m. The senior was twice named the Sun Belt conference Track Athlete of the Week during the indoor season..

Katharine Showalter . At the Samford Invitational, Showalter ran 16:51.35 in the 5,000m to best the previous record held by former Panther great Jennifer Feenstra. Showalter then clocked 4:59.62 in the mile at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier to narrowly beat the record previously held by Janel Blancett. Fellow senior Kesean Henderson reached new heights in the women’s indoor weight throw, breaking the school mark in the second meet of the season and continuing to push the distance three more times during the course of the season. . . Henderson eventually topped out at a throw of 15.56m (51-0.75) at the Samford Invite, which now stands as the new school record. Henderson now holds all of the top-five throws in the event in program history.. . Aniya Moore established a school record in the indoor pentathlon by scoring 3,210 points at the Orange and Purple Winter Classic to start the season.. . At the indoor conference championship, Showalter finished fourth in both the mile and 3,000m to go along with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000m.. . GSU earned eight points in the 3,000m as Anna Sinclair finished seventh and Hannah Stefanoff was eighth behind Showalter. Jennifer Rubel also placed fifth in the 5K. OUTDOOR SEASON The Panthers scored 57 points to finish in seventh place out of 12 teams at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship on May 10-12 in Miami, Fla. hosted by Florida International. All of the points were earned in the track events.. . The 4x100m relay team of Tatiana and Talia Colbert, Gabby Brooks and Wande Brewer captured a conference title in the event by running 45.52. That time is the third-fastest mark registered by a Panther 4x100m squad in program history.. . The same four Panther sprinters finished in second place in the 4x400m relay event to tally 18 total points to the team score. Both times were season-bests for the GSU relay squad.. . At the championship, Brewer raced to a third-place finish in the 100m dash History & Records

and came in seventh in the 200m to contribute eight points to the team total, running personal bests in both events. Panther junior Tatiana Colbert added seven more points with a fifth-place finish in the 200m and finished in sixth place in the 400m.. . Niamh Kearney scored 10 points individually after placing third in the 1,500m and fifth in the 800m. Kearney ran the fourth-fastest 1,500m time in school history with a PR of 4:29.16 to win the race at the War Eagle Invite. The mark was also the second fastest time in the conference in 2013.. . Sinclair contributed seven points with a fourth-place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase and a fifth-place effort in the 5,000m. . . The Panthers earned eight points in the steeplechase as Denise Myers (7th) and Alison Bishop (8th) also scored in the event. During the season, these runners combined for 13 top-10 finishes in the steeplechase.. . Moore set the second-highest point total ever for a Panther in the outdoor heptathlon. The sophomore scored 4,387 points over the five events to place eighth overall. Moore also launched the program’s third-best mark in the javelin at the War Eagle Invite during the season.. . Seven senior student-athletes finish their college careers during the 2012-13 track and field season: Alison Bishop, Gabby Brooks, Kesean Henderson, Sydney Henry, Denise Myers, Leah Norman and Kelsey Spinks. . Two more seniors, Showalter and Tamara Moore, still have remaining eligibility and plan to return to compete next season for the Panthers. At the annual Blue Carpet Awards, Bishop was awarded the Stoney Burgess Scholarship for being the Georgia State senior student-athlete with the highest grade point average. Sinclair and Carlos Galindo were also named to the GSU All-Academic Teams.. . The 2013 season marked the last year of competition for the Georgia State men’s track and field and cross country program.

he lone conference championship for the Georgia State track and field program came back in 2011 when the Panthers captured the women’s CAA outdoor track and field title.
