GSOFCT 2016-17 Program Resource Guide

Page 1

Dear Volunteers, Welcome to the 2016-2017 Girl Scout program year! Thank you for donating your time, talents, and enthusiasm to the girls you lead in Girl Scouting in Connecticut. The experience girls gain from being Girl Scouts allows them to discover who they are, their voice, and what they stand for, connect with the world and others to create relationships, and learn how to take action to make our world a better place. Because of you, Girl Scouting provides a safe place for girls to grow, try new things, make new friends, and thrive. This year, we are celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouts selling cookies! That’s right– for the last 100 years, girls have been selling cookies to the public to help fund a number of their efforts including community service projects, activities, trips, and other ways to make the world a better place. We are excited to celebrate the centennial with the introduction of our new Girl Scout S’mores cookie! We continue to offer new programming to better serve girls’ needs and follow the trends of today, such as STEM, adventure programming, Journey weekends, dabbler days, and more. This book is jam-packed with a large variety of activities, events, programs, and resources for all levels, including families. Share this book with girls and families in your troops so that they can explore everything Girl Scouts of Connecticut has to offer! There are plenty of familyfriendly activities like family camping, Mystic Day, and much more. Everything you see in these pages will be online on our website at gsofct.org. Together, with your help, we can make the upcoming Girl Scout year a tremendous success! Your dedication and hard work are the key components that drive our mission of building girls with courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Thank you! Yours in Girl Scouting,

Tips for Using This Book If you are interested in what activities are available during a particular month, jump to the Chronological Index on page 67. Scan through to see which activities are available to your specific grade level and go to the page listed for details. If you are looking for activities for a particular grade level, remember to check both the grade level section as well as the multi-level section. In these sections, activities are listed in alphabetical order. When you attend a grade-level specific event, all girls will be approximately the same age. Multi-level events are attended by a wider range of grade levels. For each activity there is a “register by” date. Remember to include this in your planning. Many events may fill before the “register by” date. You may register online, via fax, or mail. See How to Register on page 4. If you are looking for more information on resources particular to your grade level, you will find it at the beginning of the level section. Higher award information may be found on page 34 and 35. Scan the Table of Contents for other areas of interest such as Product Sales Program, Council’s Own patches and badges, Museum, etc. What Does This Mean? At the end of every event, series, or trip description, you’ll see info in parentheses, such as (For: Troops, Families, Individuals, Individuals w/ Adult). We’ve added this to help identify who is welcome to attend these programs. Please remember that the majority of programming is intended for girls to learn and grow. Adults accompany solely for chaperoning and safety reasons. Register and bring only girls from the appropriate grade level. Troop: A troop attends as a group of girls with chaperoning adults meeting ratio and safety activity checkpoints. When troops attend this way, there are more spaces available for girls to participate. Family: This indicates that the event is geared for a wide range of ages – from Daisies to grandparents! Girls may attend with their immediate or extended family members. Often family friends are welcome to attend. All families must have responsible adults with them. Individuals: A girl may attend an event on her own, provided she brings a completed Health History Form. In general, these events are smaller and serve Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. Individuals w/Adult: Any girl may attend with an adult chaperone.

National Program Portfolio Combined, Badges and Leadership Journeys give girls opportunities to learn new skills and take the lead as they make the world a better place. This is the Girl Scout National Program Portfolio.

Leadership Journeys Girl Scout Journeys are the foundation for leadership development at each program grade level in Girl Scouting. Just by following a Journey, girls will be engaging in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and practicing some Girl Scout traditions! The sample sessions in the adult guides are intended not as a set number of meetings, but to provide momentum and a road map for a whole adventure that has more impact than any one activity in the Journey. Girls are encouraged to customize their Journeys based on their interests and resources. There are three series of Journeys, and in each series there is a Journey book for each Girl Scout grade level. For each Journey there is a set of five skill building badges that compliment the Journey experience. The three series and the level Journey titles include: It’s Your Story–Tell It! Daisy: Three Cheers For Animals Brownie: A World of Girls Junior: aMUSE Cadette: MEdia Senior: MISSION: SISTERHOOD! Ambassador: BLISS: Live It!, Give It!

It’s Your Planet–Love It! Daisy: Between Earth and Sky Brownie: WOW! Wonders of Water Junior: Get Moving Cadette: Breathe Senior: Sow What? Ambassador: Justice

It’s Your World–Change It! Daisy: Daisy Flower Garden Brownie: Brownie Quest Junior: Agent of Change Cadette: aMAZE Senior: Girltopia Ambassador: Your Voice, Your World

The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting is available for each program level. Combined with journeys and the skill building badge sets, this resource rounds out a girl’s experience, providing a multitude of opportunities to learn new skills and increase knowledge of Girl Scouts. This three-ring binder resource has three sections: • A Handbook section – full of traditions and Girl Scout history • A “My Girl Scouts” section – with a place to record what girls do as Girl Scouts • An Awards section - For Daisies this includes information on earning the Girl Scout Petals, and for every other level, information on their Legacy badges – topics that have always been, and still are, important to Girl Scouts. The seven Legacy badge topics include: Artist, Athlete, Citizen, Cook, First Aid, Naturalist, and The Girl Scout Way. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting also offers: Financial Literacy badges (one per year), Cookie Business badges (one per year), Make My Own (one per year), Journey Summit Pin, and My Promise, My Faith. Additional awards such as VIT, Program Aide, Bronze, Silver, and Gold are included in appropriate grade level books. More information and additional Adventure and Art in the Outdoors badges on the National Program Portfolio can be found at gsofct.org on the Participate tab.

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Commit to and practice one good turn daily for at least four months. You can use our Good Turn calendar found at gsofct.org if you’d like, but it isn’t necessary. Recognize or thank at least four others for their good turns. They don’t have to be Girl Scouts. Hand them a Kindness Coin or Card. Find Printable cards and directions for kindness coins online too! Reflect. At the end of four months, hold a discussion, day of service, or ceremony focused on what you did, and how it made you feel. Were there changes within you or others? We ask that you share a bit about your experience with a quick survey. Remember, while you can start this at any time, the four months between October 31 and March is recommended. Use Girl Scout Week for reflection. Patches can be purchased at any GSOFCT Shop. Questions? Email program@gsofct.org.

Dabbler Days Returning are Daring Daisy Day, Brilliant Brownie Day, and Jammin’ Junior Day. Girls will dabble in a few badges and adults will have time to network as they attend concurrent workshops. We’re excited to head outdoors and to Candlewood for two new Dabbler Days – Bloomin’ Brownie Day and Juniper Junior Day! Join us to make new friends and explore this lovely property. New this year: • Interested adults can sign up to assist with pre-planned activities and attend at no cost. • Creative Cadettes Day, hosted by the UCONN Scouting Association.

Girl Scout Daisy Programs and Events GRADES K-1 Girl Scouts of Connecticut offers council-sponsored programs and events for troops and girls. These events bring together girls from around the state to enjoy an opportunity that they might not be able to create on their own. Please note that each event has a registration deadline and some events may fill before this date. You may register for events online at gsofct.org or by form via fax or mail.

DA I S Y R E S OU R C E S Daisy Leadership Journeys It’s Your Story–Tell It! series: 3 Cheers for Animals As Daisies learn about animals and their needs, girls learn ways to care for themselves too. It’s Your Planet – Love It! series: Between Earth and Sky The Flower Friends take a cross-country road trip that invites Daisies to explore the country and invasive species. It’s Your World – Change It! series: Daisy Flower Garden As Daisies plant seeds and care for a garden, they explore the value of the Girl Scout Law. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting This three-ring binder contains information on traditions, ceremonies, how to earn petals and leaves, and other awards. Space is set aside to record thoughts and memories. GSOFCT Council’s Own patches may be found in this book or online at gsofct.org. All Journey and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting books, as well as awards, may be purchased at the GSOFCT shops or online at gsofct.org.

Event Etiquette • Have the girls plan. Show them this book or the online registration area. • Let girls and their families know that individual girls with an adult may attend most all events. • Questions about registering should be directed to the Registration Department at (800) 922-2770 ext. 500 or registration@gsofct.org. • Please register on time; be aware of the deadlines. Nothing is sadder than canceling an event at deadline due to low numbers of participants, and then having people ask if they can still register. Also understand that sometimes events fill before the deadline. Early registration is recommended. • If you have special needs or specific questions about the event programming, contact the listed program contact. Be aware that programming often isn’t fine-tuned until the registration date, when we know how many girls to expect. • Bring only those registered for an event to the event. Some sites are very limited in space. Please don’t assume we can add just one more. • Be prepared. Be sure to have directions to the site and plan on arriving in time to walk to check-in. Double check that you have what you need for the day (attire, lunch, etc…). • Adults – It’s great to meet and network. If you’d like to have conversations, ask the facilitator if it is OK if you step out of the room, go for a walk, etc. Conversations are distracting to the event, so in most instances the answer will be, “yes, please.” • Whether a volunteer, GSOFCT staff, or a community program partner, whoever is facilitating loves sharing skills and experiences with the girls, and puts a lot of effort into what they do. Remind the girls that a “thank you” is always appreciated. Looking for More? Find more events for Daisies in the multi-level section, starting on page 36.

Girl Scout Junior Programs & Events GRADES 4-5 Girl Scouts of Connecticut offers council-sponsored programs and events for troops and girls. These events bring together girls from around the state to enjoy an opportunity that they might not be able to create on their own. Please note that each event has a registration deadline and some events may fill before this date. You may register for events online at gsofct.org or by form via fax or mail. JUNIOR RESOURCES

Leadership Journeys It’s Your Story – Tell It! series: aMUSE Juniors seek out and learn from positive role models in their lives. It’s Your Planet – Love It! series: Get Moving! Girls learn about energy inside them, around them, and ways to use energy wisely. It’s Your World – Change It! series: Agent of Change Juniors discover what makes them unique while learning about women in history. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting This three-ring binder contains information on traditions, ceremonies, how to earn badges and other awards, such as the Girl Scout Bronze Award. Space is set aside for girls to record their thoughts and memories. Additional Outdoor Adventures and Art in the Outdoors badges may be found online. GSOFCT Council’s Own patches may be found in this book or online at gsofct.org. All Journey and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting books, as well as awards may be purchased at the GSOFCT shops or online at gsofct.org. Conversations are distracting to the event, so in most instances the answer will be, “yes, please.” • Whether volunteers, GSOFCT staff, or a community program partner, whoever is facilitating loves sharing skills and experiences with the girls, and puts a lot of effort into what they do. Remind the girls that a “thank you” is always appreciated.

Looking for More? Find more events for Juniors in the multi-level section, starting on page 36. Interested in the Girl Scout Bronze Award? See “Highest Awards,” page 34.

A Series of Unfortunate Adventures: Do you Have What it Takes to Survive? Life doesn’t always go smoothly. We all face unfortunate events from time to time. So, how do we turn a bad situation into a memorable adventure? Practice your real-life survival skills with a variety of unlikely (and somewhat imaginary!) circumstances on our low ropes course at camp. You might be abducted by drooling aliens, get stranded in a forest packed with poison ivy, or need to find your way out of a jungle after losing your eyesight. You might be surprised at what you can overcome when you take on life’s challenges with the help of your friends. Adults participate in their own concurrent programming on mentoring Juniors. All will participate in sessions focusing on Growth Mindset and Goal Setting. Participants must attend the entire weekend. Girl Scout Cadette Programs & Events GRADES 6-8 Girl Scouts of Connecticut offers council-sponsored programs and events for troops and girls. These events bring together girls from around the state to enjoy an opportunity that they might not be able to create on their own. Please note that each event has a registration deadline and some events may fill before this date. You may register for events online at gsofct.org or by form via fax or mail.

CADETTE RESOURCES Leadership Journeys It’s Your Story – Tell It! series: MEdia Cadettes look for the ME in media and learn how they can shape media – for themselves, their community, and the world. It’s Your Planet – Love It! series: Breathe! Girls explore properties of air as well as measuring air quality and ways to improve it. It’s Your World – Change It! series: aMAZE Girls learn to navigate paths to peaceful relationships, both locally and globally. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting This three-ring binder contains information on traditions, ceremonies, how to earn badges and other awards, such as L.I.A. and the Girl Scout Silver Award.

Adventures in Leadership

aMAZE Journey Weekend

We need healthy leaders to help us navigate challenges in our lives, and others need us to lead them in their struggles. Through fun activities on the ground, thrilling adventures on our ropes course, and quiet times for reflection, we will explore leadership; how to choose a good leader, how to be a good follower, and how to encourage and support one who might be struggling in her leadership role. Girls will create a special token to take with them as a reminder to apply what they’ve learned everywhere they go. Lunch will be provided. There will be a one-hour break for lunch. (For Troops, Individual girls, Individuals w/Adult)

Join other Cadettes in the maze of friendship and discover how to create peace together. Pre and post work is required to complete the Journey awards. Girls will leave the weekend having completed most of the Journey activities and ready to do their Take Action project. Adults participate in their own concurrent programming on mentoring Cadettes. All will participate in sessions focusing on Growth Mindset and Goal Setting. Participants must attend the entire weekend. They may not arrive late or leave early, as this disrupts the program for others. Journey books, four meals, snacks, and Journey awards are included. (For: Troops, Girls w/Adult)

Philly Overnight

NYC Day Trip

Spend the weekend in our Nation’s birthplace. Begin the day on a coach bus as we head to Philadelphia! Once we arrive, we will have a group lunch and take a Duck Boat tour. Afterwards your group will have free time to explore the city and visit places such as the Betsy Ross House, the Liberty Bell, the Rocky Steps and much more! We will then head back to CT mid afternoon on Sunday. See page 52 for details.

Start the day off at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. You will also have free time to explore the area and have lunch. Times Square is a popular stop during this time. Then we will head over to Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Museum. On our way home, we will stop for dinner (dinner and lunch not included in price). See page 21 for details. (For: Troops, Individuals w/Adult).

Destinations Girl Scout destinations are unique travel and learning opportunities for individual girls in grades 6-12. Whether here or abroad, girls will meet and team up with girls with similar interests. GSUSA usually posts the year’s new destinations in September on forgirls.girlscouts.org. Applications must be received in the North Haven Service Center by November 14. Based on need, number of applicants, and availability of resources, partial financial assistance may be available. It is also appropriate to discuss with your troop the possibility of using Product Sales funds to support these experiences. For local information, contact Nancy at nbajek@gsofct.org.

Presidential Volunteer Service Award Girl Scouts of Connecticut is a certifying organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Available to civic-minded children, teens, and adults, it’s given in recognition of volunteerism. The service may be in one or more topical areas, and is recognized at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. The number of hours for each level is age-dependent. Since this isn’t a Girl Scout-earned award, hours used towards awards such as Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold may be applied towards the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. For those who have accumulated over 4,000 hours of service, there is a Lifetime award. Award packets (certificate, letter from the President of the United States, and pin) are $10 and there are three ordering deadlines: October 15, January 15, and April 15. Packets will be sent approximately six weeks after these dates. For more info and the request form, visit the Resource and Forms library at gsofct.org. Questions? Email program@gsofct.org.

Community Service Bar In Girl Scouts Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors are able to earn these service bars by volunteering locally or at a council level. At a council level, assistance is often needed preparing for events, assisting at younger girl events, or general office work. If you are interested in earning this award, and/or have volunteer hours to do for school or other organizations, and would like to know what options are available at the council level, contact program@gsofct.org. At a local level, speak with your Troop Leader, Service Unit Manager, or attend a Leader’s Meeting and discuss where you can provide service. More information about these awards is in the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting.

Girl Scouts Highest Awards Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors may earn one of the highest awards – Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Each award challenges a girl to put her leadership skills to work as she takes action to address a community issue. Information about these awards may also be found in The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting and at gsofct.org. These are national awards, but each council has their own way of doing things. It is important to know GSOFCT’s process, deadlines, reporting, etc. The Girl Scout Bronze Award • The Girl Scout Bronze Award can be earned by a Girl Scout Junior, until September 30 of her sixth grade year. • Girls must complete a Junior Girl Scout Journey as a prerequisite. • Girls can earn the Bronze Award as a group and their project can be inside or outside the Girl Scout Community. • The Take Action project must address an issue’s root cause and include a suggested minimum of 20 personal hours. • When completed, please register your accomplishment online, PG17998 and share information at gsofct.org. • Bronze pins and commemorative items can be found at GSOFCT council shops. • If you have any questions, email program@gsofct.org.

The Girl Scout Silver Award • The Silver Award is the second highest award Girl Scouts can earn. This award is for Girl Scout Cadettes. • The deadline for this award is September 30 of the girl’s ninth grade year. Once they reach October 1 of their ninth grade year, they are Girl Scout Seniors and cannot earn this award. • Girls must first complete a Cadette Journey before working on their Silver Award. They can choose from Breathe, aMAZE, or MEdia. • Once girls have completed the Journey, they should watch the Silver Award Webinar with their adult advisor to learn everything they need to know about earning the Silver Award. You can go to our YouTube Channel at youtube.com/gsofct to watch the webinar. • You can also go to gsofct.org and learn more about the Silver Award. • When completed, please register your accomplishment online, PG17999 and share information at gsofct.org. • If you have any questions, please email silver@gsofct.org.

Are you super proud of your Silver Award Take Action Project? Apply to be part of the June Expo at the Gold Award Celebration held on the first Sunday of June. Questions? Contact program@gsofct.org

Girl Scout Gold Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. Each Gold Take Action project is led by one girl. The effort taken to earn this award expresses a special commitment to one’s self, community, world, and future. Each Gold Award project provides a sustainable solution that addresses a community issue. General information may be found in the Senior and Ambassador Girl’s Guides to Girl Scouting. Necessary GSOFCT specific information and forms may be found on gsofct.org. Prerequisites to earning the Gold Award include completing either two Senior/Ambassador Journeys, or having earned the Silver Award and completed one Journey. Girls must also attend a Gold Award Webinar before submitting their initial project plan. Adults are welcome to attend the webinar as well. All Gold Award projects are submitted for approval and girls are expected to work closely with their Volunteer Gold Award Mentor. All girls who have earned their Gold Award during the year (April 1-March 31) are honored at a council-wide celebration, held on the first Sunday in June. During this ceremony, girls are presented with Gold Award certificates and a number of congratulatory letters and certificates from local and national dignitaries. After completing the final Gold Award interview, girls who have earned the Gold Award may plan and participate in a local pinning ceremony. While girls receive their pin from their Gold Award Mentor, other special commemorative Gold Award items may be found at GSOFCT council shops and online shop. For more information, visit gsofct.org or email gold@gsofct.org. The following are a few important dates to keep in mind. More dates and information are located in the Gold Award Guidelines and Toolkit: • Begin prerequisite work after July 1 before entering ninth grade. • Last date to submit My Gold Award Project proposal is June 1 of twelfth grade. • Submit My Gold Award Project Idea within three months of attending a Gold Award Webinar. • Submit proposal within three months after initial meeting with Gold Award Mentor. • Allow two-to-three weeks for project idea paperwork turnaround. • Allow six-to-eight weeks for proposal paperwork turnaround. For information about grants and scholarships, see page 62. For webinar dates, visit the Gold Award page on gsofct.org

Be a Gold Award Mentor! Gold Award mentors have the opportunity to positively influence and provide direction for the young women interested in tackling issues within their community and striving to improve the lives of others. If you are interested and would like to learn more about being a Gold Award Mentor, please email gold@gsofct.org.

Multi-Level Program Events and Resources Girl Scouts of Connecticut offers council-sponsored programs and events for multiple grade level troops and girls. These events bring together girls from around the state to enjoy an opportunity that they might not be able to create on their own. Please note that each event has a registration deadline and some events may fill before this date. You may register for events online at gsofct.org or by form via fax or mail. In this section: D=Daisy (grades K-1), B=Brownie (grades 2-3), J=Junior (grades 4-5), C=Cadette (grades 6-8), S=Senior (grades 9-10), Am=Ambassador (grades 11-12), A=Adult You’ll find additional events for single grade levels in the beginning of this book. Event Etiquette • Have the girls plan. Show them this book or the online registration area. • Let girls and their families know that individual girls with an adult may attend most all events. • Questions about registering should be directed to the Registration Department at (800) 922-2770 • ext. Find more events in the separate grade-level sections of this book.

Additional program opportunities may be planned during the year. Information about these activities are promoted in our e-newsletters Helpful Hints, Advisor Update, Girl Scout Bridges, and Volunteer E-blast as well as posted on our website homepage, Facebook Page, and to troop volunteers through Rallyhood. To find our events online: - Visit gsofct.org/iMIS_public - Then click on the orange Events tab at the top - Then click on the Calendar link on the left

Adventure at Pattagansett BJCSAm In addition to the adventure-based events listed in this book, we provide group development sessions at Camp Pattagansett in East Lyme. A group of six or more may contact Victoria Eisenhauer to schedule a session customized to the groups’ goals and needs. Participating in this programming helps ensure a safe space for all to face their fears, test their limits, and support each other throughout the process. While some adventure parks focus on a “fun/wow factor,” we focus on the “wow” within each person and group – all while having fun! These three-hour sessions are for six-to-ten participants, and cost $200. Additional fees apply for larger groups, and may apply when additional facilitators are needed. Scheduling with Victoria includes arranging for the site and session. To facilitate scheduling, please have a number of possible dates in mind. We’ll do our best to accommodate. Call Victoria Eisenhauer at (860) 691-2195.

2016 QSP Program

Updates to the Program for 2016! Girls will receive a direct invitation to the QSP Online Program! Girls registered for Girl Scouts prior to September 30 with an active email address will receive an email invitation to log into the QSP Online Program! This email will include a link to get girls started in customizing their online store, and inviting customers to support them in reaching their goals. Exciting nut-E Updates Online nut, candy, and magazine sales will now automatically flow from the online program into nut-E. This will ensure that troops receive credit for all online sales and will decrease the amount of information entered by the Troop QSP Manager. The QSP Program is GSOFCT’s fall product program that offers an opportunity for customers to support Girl Scouts through the purchase of magazines, photo keepsakes, nuts, and candy. Troop proceeds help to fund the troop treasury early in the Girl Scout year.

New recognition for Share Program sales! The Share Program is back and we are once again partnering with the American Red Cross, CT Chapter. Girls who sell at least two Share items will receive the Share patch, girls who sell five or more items will also receive a collapsible water bottle with carabiner.

Order taking for the 2016 QSP Program will take place from October 1 to November 1. Nut and candy products will be delivered in early December.

Service Unit QSP Managers will hold trainings in August and September. Troop volunteers will pick up all materials when they attend training. Additional resources will be available at gsofct.org.

MyPatch Creation opportunity for girls and volunteers! Once again girls and volunteers will be able to create their own customized patch. Girls will earn the patch when they have $150 or more of online sales. NEW: Troop volunteers with girl online sales totaling $300 or more will earn their own patch! Up to two volunteers may order their free patches directly through email.

New nut and candy products! Honey Roasted Mixed Nuts with Peanuts in the new one pound gripper jar! This year’s collectable tin - Girl Scout Camp Pack Tin Filled with Mint Treasures.

Troops will continue to earn 15 percent of total sales for nuts, candy, photo keepsake, and magazine orders. Troops can also earn $2.00 for each completed address booklet. Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador troops may opt to take an additional 2 percent in proceeds in lieu of girl recognitions.

For more information about the QSP Program please contact the Product Sales Department at productsales@gsofct.org

Election Day Booth Sales Election Day Booth Sales In 2016 we have a better ballot box available at polling locations and around town during the week of Election Day. At Election Day Booth Sales, customers are encouraged to cast their ballots and then pick up a box of their favorite Girl Scout Cookies. All registered troops and girls may hold booth sales and/or ask friends and family to purchase cookies from November 5- November 13, 2016. Booths may be held at polling locations, businesses, events, and other venues in your community. Speak with your Service Unit Manager or Service Unit Cookie Manager to learn about the procedure for scheduling and securing a booth site in your area. All booth site locations, days, and times must be approved by the service unit. Girls develop important skills in goal setting, money management, decision making, business ethics, and people skills while planning for, holding, and using proceeds from their booths. Troops will earn proceeds to be used for upcoming activities and trips, to purchase troop supplies and rewards, and to fund projects that benefit the community. Historical Museum and Items Girl Scouts of Connecticut: McGuff Museum of Girl Scout History Located in Room 107 on the first floor of the North Haven Service Center, the museum houses a collection of dolls in replica uniforms, local and international items, historical uniforms, accessories, and more. View the Golden Eaglet on the large screen TV, listen to Girl Scout songs, try on some historical uniforms, or take part in simple self-guided, hands-on activities. Troops have used the museum for ceremonies, special meetings, and when working on Girl Scout Ways badges. There is no fee to use the museum. Open hours are available upon request. We’ll do our best to match your schedule. If you’d like to visit as a troop or service unit please let us know as far in advance as possible. If you are in the service center during business hours, feel free to ask the Program Department if the museum is available for visiting. Visits may be scheduled by contacting program@gsofct.org. Those scheduled during regular GSOFCT business hours are met most easily.

Historical Suitcases The GSOFCT Historical Committee volunteers have created a collection of suitcases which bring history to your meeting or local event. There is no fee to borrow them, but due to their weight, they must be picked up from and delivered to the North Haven Service Center. Suitcases contain uniforms, accessories, and books from various eras. Uniforms may be tried on at meetings or used in fashion shows. While there are only a few, the parade suitcases contain uniforms that may be worn while marching in a parade. Please use the reservation form found at gsofct.org and reserve as far in advance as possible.

Volunteers are always welcome to help input items into the archival program, identify and repair items, and welcome girls to the museum. Contact program@gsofct.org for more information. Donations of specific items are needed to complete our collection! While items may not be placed in the museum, they will be used in other ways. See our historical wish list to complete our collection at gsofct.org.

Program Resources Pen Pals

Techbridge Kits

Connecting with girls in other parts of Connecticut increases girls’ literacy skills and helps them learn more about our state! Submit a Pen Pal Request form found in the Resource and Form Library at gsofct.org, and our Pen Pal volunteer will do their best to find a Connecticut match for you. One of the best things about having Connecticut pen pals is that girls have more opportunities to meet in person.

Techbridge Kits provide hands-on exploration of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and related careers. Each box contains a guide and materials for the activities, and may be rented for a fee. Most kits are geared for Juniors and older. The five topic themes include: Power it Up, Design Time, Make it Green, Engineers to the Rescue, and Thrill Builders. To help facilitators become familiar with the activities and concepts, there are online instructional video clips. For more information visit the Participate tab of gsofct.org, or contact Dani Lachance at dlachance@gsofct.org. New this year, A Techbridge patch and rocker “gear patches” for each kit.

Letterboxing Join in on the fun of letterboxing! This is a combination of scavenger hunt, map reading, and a hike. Follow clues to find a “planted” letterbox at one of our Outdoor Program Centers. Once you find the box, you can mark your logbook with the stamp found inside, stamp the logbook with your personal stamp, and return it to the box. General information about letterboxing can be found at letterboxing.org. For more information about letterboxing at one of our sites, contact program@gsofct.org. Remember to look for letterboxing events in this book as well!

Braille Books A generous grant provided GSOFCT with Braille copies of all The Girl’s Guides to Girl Scouting, Badge sets, Journey adult guides, and Girl Journey books. We have lending sets available at each Service Center. For more information, contact program@gsofct.org.

Grief and Loss Program-in-a-Box Helpful when there is a loss in a family or group, the Grief and Loss box contains ideas to help girls develop loss awareness through literature, art, and interactive activities. Books include storybooks for younger girls, teen appropriate books, as well as informational books for adults working with youth. Grief and Loss boxes are located in each of our service centers, and are available at no cost. Contact program@gsofct.org.

Gold Award Scholarships Girls who have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award by April 1 of their high school senior year and are entering college as a freshman the following fall, or who have earned the Gold Award after April 1 before their college freshman year and are entering as a college sophomore, may apply for the following $1,000 scholarships. The Bea Okwu and the Emily Chaison scholarship forms may be found in the Gold section of the Participate tab at gsofct.org. The Connecticut Elks also offer a scholarship. The application for this is usually posted in the same area by February 1. All applications are due on April 1. Girls are also encouraged to visit the GSUSA website for a national Gold Award scholarship search engine.

Gold Award Grants Through the support of donors, GSOFCT is able to offer a very limited number of $100 Gold Award mini grants for approved projects. Contact your Gold Award Mentor for more information.

Troop and Service Unit Program Support Found in the Resource and Form Library, you’ll find the Heart Sisters, a complete plan for a healthy living event. While the Program Department can’t come run an event for a service unit, we’re happy to share our experience and help guide older girls and/ or volunteers in their event planning. The Program Department will also do their best to attend a service unit meeting to discuss Girl Scout programming. Contact program@gsofct.org for more information.

The program can be used as a six-to-eight session series or be embedded in troop meetings. Ambassadors and Adults may be trained to implement the program. For more info, visit gsofct.org under the Participate or contact Nancy at nbajek@gsofct.org.

STEM An all-girl environment gives girls the perfect space to explore science, technology, engineering, and math. See this guide for numerous events based on STEM, the Brownie Section for FIRST Robotics, or explore our Techbridge kits. Techbridge kits are designed for Juniors and older girls, and cover a wide range of engineering areas. See more and find the reservation form at gsofct.org under the Participate tab. Last year we were able to bring Girl Scouting to even more girls through the generosity of our donors. Like you, our caring donors believe in the power of Girl Scouts and that EVERY GIRL should have this opportunity. Wouldn’t it be great if we could serve EVERY GIRL who wants to be a Girl Scout? Your gift can help make this happen! Please contact: Fund Development at (860) 522-0163 or donate@gsofct.org to learn how you can join our circle of donors.
