TABLE OF CONTENTS:

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Did You Know? At summer camp, girls take the lead in everything that they do–they practice leadership with grit like a go-getter, problem-solve and are creative like an innovator, try new things and embrace new ideas like a risk-taker, and show empathy like a leader. Camp builds problem-solvers! Girls with more frequent outdoor experiences are more likely to seek challenges and are better at solving problems—qualities that will help them embark on a lifetime of leadership, both academically and personally. Camp exposes girls to new experiences! Of girls surveyed, 72 percent said that Girl Scouts gave them the chance to build their skills or try new outdoor activities. Camp builds courage and confidence! Spending time in nature improves a girl’s concentration and creative reasoning. Outdoor experiences also help promote healthy social development and increases her self-esteem.

Day Camp Day Camp Information Day camps operate Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A typical day includes morning flag, assisting with unit kapers (camp chores), activity periods, lunch, more activities, and flag. Before care is available at all day camps except Clatter Valley for an additional fee of $50 per week. Camper drop off can be as early as 7:30 a.m. Girls are served a yummy and healthy cold breakfast and start their camp adventure early. Not available for girls taking bus transportation. After care allows the fun to continue until 5:30 p.m. For an additional fee of $50 per week, girls receive a hearty snack and continue camp activities with additional crafts, games, and laughter. After care is only available at Katoya, Laurel, and Merrie-Wood. No late transportation is available. Girls are divided into groups called units based upon program and grade in the fall of 2017. Most units are 1620 girls with three to five counselors. Units get to pick the fun activities that they will do, where to go on their hikes, which crafts they will create, whether to cook tacos or make s’mores (or both!), and more. A single overnight at camp is an optional activity for girls entering grades 4 and up. Offered on select weeks, the cost is $15.

Day camp is open on July 4 but there will be no after care. Please note that GSOFCT reserves the right to cancel any program or bus that does not meet the minimum registration requirements. So please register early! We can’t wait to see you at camp!

Day Camp Programs

Two Weeks

Fun, adventure, and tradition are the buzzwords of this two-week option. It’s a “best of” list that each camp has to offer and each girl gets to do it all! Girls will make new friends as they play games, sing songs, and explore their environments. They’ll also learn cool new skills as they engage in fire building and outdoor cooking. All girls receive daily swim instruction (except at Camp Merrie-Wood), and girls entering grade 4 and above can try archery.

One Week

Whoever said, “good things come in small packages”, might have been talking about this one-week traditional camp option. With changing theme weeks and the chance for girls to choose some of their activities, each week is unique! All girls receive daily swim instruction (except at Camp Merrie-Wood), and girls entering grade 4 and above can try archery.

Horse Fun One week

For the girl who loves horses. Girls spend part of their day learning horse care and riding skills then spend the rest of the day enjoying the fun of camp. Each one-week session is made for beginner to intermediate-level riders and provides arena riding instruction. Girls are transported* to a local horse barn for at least four lessons. (*Camp Laurel lessons are held on site). Horse Fun is available on a limited basis at certain camps.

Leadership Opportunities Information on all Summer Camp Leadership Opportunities at day and resident camps can be found on pages 20-21. Some programs require an application and selection process.

No bikes or helmets will be provided.

Hiking Adventure at Camp Carlson only

Resident Camp Information Our resident camp programs are designed to meet the various needs of the wide age range of girls who come to resident camp. Living units are based upon the grades girls will be going into for the fall 2017 school year, but program areas have the flexibility to meet their wide range of skills. Girls in our youngest units will experience the outdoors, explore their curiosities, learn basic outdoor living skills, swim in our lake, and enjoy a traditional outdoor camp experience with hiking, crafts, and games. As their skills progress, girls in grades 4-5 will begin archery and boating, learning basic forms and proper techniques. They will continue to hone their outdoor living skills as they begin outdoor cooking and prepare for their packouts each week. Girls will also put their team building skills to the test as they try our challenge initiatives and become both strong team players and leaders among their peers. Girls in grades 6-8 will take these activities even further with more advanced boating in canoes and kayaks, learning more difficult maneuvers and rescue moves. They will test their highly developed outdoor living expertise as they are challenged daily in all of their activities, from more advanced archery to campfire cooking, and skilled swimming and games in the lake. They will also take the lead on challenge initiatives as they find themselves working as a tight-knit team to traverse the toughest obstacles. In grades 9-12, girls are ready to emerge as leaders while still enjoying their camp experience. They will work on team building exercises and gain a glimpse into what our leadership staff experience every day, from creative problem-solving to multitasking and prioritizing daily tasks. Girls will foster their independence and cultivate confidence as they are given more freedom in their choices of activities to make the most out of their camp experience. Centrally located in camp is the Health Center, which is staffed by licensed personnel with doctors on call. The center is equipped to handle routine healthcare and first aid. Meals are served in our central dining hall. Besides the nutritious entrees, meals also include extras like a breakfast bar or salad bar. Fresh fruit is available throughout the day. With advance notice, camp can accommodate many specialty diets.

One Week

Two Weeks

This session is for the girl who enjoys nature and is curious about the outdoors. This is a one-week camp experience with a sampling of everything that camp has to offer: hiking, swimming, crafts, boating, campfires, and making new friends! She’ll never forget all the amazing memories and friends she made this summer!

Girls will have a blast making friends and exploring their environment. This two-week, traditional camp experience offers swimming, boating, outdoor cooking, and team building, as well as plenty of time with friends, old and new. With an emphasis on individuality, each girl can choose some activities each day to ensure that her camp experience is uniquely her own.

Leadership Opportunities Information on all summer camp leadership programs at day and resident camps can be found on pages 20-21. Some programs require an application and selection process.

Resident Camp Horseback Riding For girls looking to gain new skills, the horseback riding programs at Laurel and Timber Trails are designed for all levels of riders. On the first day, girls’ riding abilities are thoughtfully assessed and they are placed into riding groups that allow girls to work comfortably and confidently at their own pace. This helps them identify areas needing improvement and hone equestrian skills. Safety is always our first priority. Bad weather and excessive heat may shorten the time that the camper is actually on horseback. If that happens, they’ll work on other horse-related activities. Laurel and Timber Trails are inclusive equestrian programs. In a two-hour session, girls will learn horse and stable care which includes mucking stalls, feeding, grooming, and tacking horses. In between assigned riding rotations, girls work on equestrian theory. If you have any questions, please contact camp@gsofct.org.

16

Saddle Up

One Week Time to saddle up! Time at the stable includes riding, equestrian theory, and general horse care. The program includes four horseback riding lessons and some of our traditional camp activities like boating, archery, crafts, and hiking to give each girl an experience she’s sure to remember for years to come.

Survivor Girl July 9-22 Unleash your inner survivor! This week away at camp will be filled with fun ways to learn what you need to know when you are out in the woods. How do you build a fire without a match? Do you know how to build a shelter? How do you find your way out of the woods? Can you use a compass? How do you get into a canoe after it tips over? To prepare for our primitive camping nights, you will learn and practice skills in fire and shelter building, animal habits, hiking, and outdoor cooking.
