2019 Program Ways for girls to participate 1. Create an online storefront on the GSOFCT Treats & Reads website. 2. Use the nut and candy order card to take in-person orders. 3. #1 and #2! Girls can use both methods to reach as many customers as possible!

No Girl Delivery Fee! NEW THIS YEAR: NO additional fee will be added to online orders for girl delivery or Care to Share purchases.

New Personalized Patch!

The personalized avatar patch has been updated to reflect this year’s theme. See page 14 for patch requirements.

We are excited to launch the second Treats & Reads Program with M2 Media Group and Ashdon Farms as our fall product program vendors! As promised last year, when GSOFCT switched to M2 Media, we significantly streamlined the Treats & Reads Program so that is more intuitive for volunteers AND girls/parents. This year's program offers 16 delicious nut and candy items on the order card and online for girl delivery. There are 25+ nut and candy items available to purchase for direct ship to customers via a Girl Scout's online storefront. More than 600 magazine titles are available to renew/purchase via a Girl Scout's online storefront. New product for 2019 (available online and on the nut and candy order card): • Barbeque Snack Mix • Dark Chocolate Peppermint Pretzels This year’s program theme is, “Be the Difference." Like the Girl Scout Cookie Program®, the Treats & Reads Program helps girls gain the skills, including goal setting and decision making, that allow them to "be the difference" in their communities. Be sure to give the family information flyer to all girls/families so they can get up and running with a Treats & Reads online storefront. Girls can also use the nut and candy order card AND the business cards (available from a Girl Scout’s online storefront) to reach out to in-person customers.

Key Must-Know Tips for 2019 Check out these tips to ensure you have the information and resources needed for a successful Treats & Reads Program. Need more specifics? Check out the rest of this guide or the Treats & Reads Volunteer Resources page at gsofct.org. We’ve included a magnifying glass throughout this guide to highlight key points!

Top Five Things to Know! 1. Girls/families can register for the program directly on the GSOFCT Treats & Reads website— gsnutsandmags.com/ gsofct. No need to wait for a registration email. 2. ALL online orders are paid for with a customer’s credit card AND flow directly into the girl’s record on the M2 online platform. All online orders will automatically record in the girl’s record AND should NOT be manually added to a girl’s record on the M2 online platform. 3. Girls/families can enter in-person/offline orders directly into the Girl Scout’s online storefront. No need to email/text/drop off the nut and candy order card to the troop volunteer.

2

4. Offer ALL girls in the troop the opportunity to participate in the program. The online platform is straightforward and simple for girls/families to navigate. AND, since parents/guardians can enter offline sales into the online platform, this means less heavy lifting for the troop volunteers. 5. Use the program resources available to troop volunteers. In addition to this guide, we have lots of resources on our Treats & Reads Volunteer Resources page at gsofct.org, including short video tutorials, written instructions on how to navigate the online platform, and key program dates. Plus, your service unit Treats & Reads volunteer is a great resource for questions and information about the program!

Treats & Reads registration opens for troop volunteers on 9/20 and for girls and families on 9/25. Register for the program directly on GSOFCT's Treats & Reads website– gsnutsandmags.com/ gsofct. No need to wait for a registration email! Girls can take orders via their online storefront AND in person with their nut and candy order card. Did you know? Once girls set up their online storefront, they can print out business cards to give to in-person customers interested in magazine subscriptions! An ACH authorization needs to be completed EVERY membership year to pay GSOFCT for a troop’s product programs. The link to the ACH authorization is on the VTK and the Treats & Reads Volunteer Resources page at gsofct.org.

Quick Launch After checking out the 2019 program introduction (page 1) AND the top five things to know on the previous page, follow the steps below to get going with this year’s program. 1. Troop volunteers need to register for the GSOFCT 2019–2020 membership year AND be an approved volunteer. 2. Get girls going! Encourage girls to register on the GSOFCT Treats & Reads website, create their totally unique avatars, and send out marketing emails. Girl Scouts/family members can also post the link to her online storefront on social media (see page 11 for social media guidelines). Customers can choose to renew/ purchase magazine subscriptions, nut and candy items, and/or make a Care to Share donation purchase. Ensure every girl has a nut and candy order card to take in-person orders. Care to Share purchases can also be made via the order card. 3. Safety! Be sure girls and families are made aware of the guidelines about staying safe while participating online and taking in-person orders. See pages 10–11. 4. Know your deadlines! Calendar is on pages 4–5. 5. Submit the ACH authorization form by October 23, 2019. 3

Why Participate in Treats & Reads? Win-win for troops and girls! The Treats & Reads Program is an integral part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) with financial literacy at its core. Girls who participate in the program not only earn money for their troop treasuries, but also learn skills that will help them be leaders in their own lives, in business, and their communities. The product programs also provide revenue to GSOFCT, which is used to fund programming, leadership development opportunities, and trainings for girls and adults throughout the state. All Girl Scout members and their communities benefit from this important program. How do troops benefit when girls participate in the Treats & Reads Program?

6

Troops benefit by getting a head start on funding their treasuries so girls can enjoy great program activities. Troop proceeds from the program are as follows: • 15 percent of total sales (magazine and nut and candy items) • Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador troops may elect to take an additional two percent in troop proceeds (total of 17 percent of sales) in place of individual girl rewards. Girls in these troops are eligible for the Top Seller reward, will receive all patches earned, including the personalized avatar patch, AND the troop is still eligible to earn the Troop Reward.

Ideas for using troop proceeds • Community service projects • Girl Scout award projects • Saving for overnight trips • Attending camporees Girls will come up with fantastic ideas about how to use the money earned through their participation in the Treats & Reads Program!

How do girls benefit by participating in the Treats & Reads Program?

Sample personalized avatar patch

Did you know? Through the Care to Share program, girls and their communities can help the American Red Cross, CT Chapter. GSOFCT is proud to offer customers an opportunity to purchase nut product to be donated to the American Red Cross, CT Chapter. Donation purchases can be made online or in person with a Girl Scout. See page 15 for more information on the Care to Share program.

In addition to gaining experience in the five skills of the Girl Scout product sales programs (goal setting, decision making, people skills, money management, and business ethics), girls are eligible to earn the following: • Cool rewards, including patches, for participating in various parts of the program. • A personalized patch featuring an avatar that can be customized to look just like her! With thousands of different features and accessories, including multiple shoe options, girls will be able to create a one-of-a-kind patch that is truly reflective of her. • A second personalized avatar patch when she participates and achieves benchmarks in both the Treats & Reads and cookie programs (see page 14 for more information about the Cookie Crossover patch). Plus, when girls participate in the Treats & Reads Program, they also help the troop achieve the Troop Reward—every sale counts toward earning this reward (see page 19 for more information)! For more information about the five skills of the Girl Scout product sales programs and the Entrepreneurial pillar of the GSLE, please visit gsofct.org (About > Our Program).

How Do Girls Participate in Treats & Reads? Treats & Reads is a simple way for troops to get a head start on funding their treasuries so girls can enjoy great program activities they help choose. Members of the community like that their Treats & Reads purchases support local Girl Scout troops. The online platform makes it simple for customers to make purchases AND for girls/families/troop volunteers to use!

Purchases to support a Girl Scout and her troop can be made in the following ways: 1. Online—Customers can renew or purchase magazine subscriptions and nut and candy items via a Girl Scout’s online storefront. For nut and candy purchases, customers will have a choice to have the items delivered to them by the Girl Scout or shipped directly to them (additional shipping fees for direct shipped orders will be paid by the customer). 2. In person—Customers can order nut and candy items from a Girl Scout in person on her nut and candy order card. Customers pay for the items when the order is placed (cash or check payable to GSOFCT), and the Girl Scout will deliver the items in mid‑December. 3. Care to Share purchases—Customers can purchase a can (or several!) of Honey Roasted Peanuts to be donated to the American Red Cross, CT Chapter. 8

How do girls/families use the M2 online platform to participate? The M2 online platform is the hub of the Treats & Reads Program for Girl Scouts. Once the Girl Scout has registered for this year’s program on the platform, she can: • Create a one-of-a-kind, totally personalized avatar. • Set up her online storefront where she can share her/the troop’s goals, upload a photo, and record a message in her own voice asking customers for their support. • Email customers asking for their support and send the link to her online storefront to customers via social media (girls 12 and younger must use a trusted adult’s social media account). See page 11 for more tips about using the internet, including the M2 online platform, safely. • Download business cards with the link to her website to distribute to family members and friends. • Select, when applicable, reward options. • Record all nut and candy orders that are taken in person via the nut and candy order card. • Orders that are placed and paid for online will be automatically recorded on the M2 online platform. • Orders that are taken in person on the nut and candy order card need to be manually entered by a parent/volunteer.

The GSOFCT Treats & Reads website will open on September 25 for girls/families AND customers. gsnutsandmags.com/gsofct Getting started with the M2 online platform is SIMPLE! • Beginning on September 25, girls/families can register for the Treats & Reads Program by going to the GSOFCT Treats & Reads website: gsnutsandmags.com/gsofct. • A registration email with a link to the website will also be sent to parents/guardians of girls who are registered for the 2019-2020 membership year. • NOTE: Girls/families DO NOT need to wait for the registration email; registration for the program can take place directly on the GSOFCT Treats & Reads website.

Safety A reminder from Mama Rhino Najiin

General Information

10

• Girls should be involved in goal setting, planning, and execution of the Treats & Reads Program for the troop. • A parent/guardian must know the Girl Scout’s whereabouts when she is participating in the program, including if and when she is utilizing the M2 online platform. • Girls and adults should be familiar with the neighborhoods where the Girl Scout sells and should only participate in door-to-door sales during daylight hours. • Girls should always wear a Girl Scout uniform, OR membership pin, OR Girl Scout clothing when taking orders and/or delivering products to customers. • Girls should not share their full name, phone number, address, or personal email address with customers who are not trusted family or friends. An email address overseen by an adult should be used for customers to request information or to place an additional order.

Safety is our first concern when girls are participating in the Treats & Reads Program.

All participating girls MUST be registered for the 2019-2020 membership year AND have a signed Annual Consent form on file with the troop.

Looking for more safety information? The complete and current Cookie and Product Sales Safety Activity Checkpoint can be found at gsofct.org (Volunteer > Resources > Important Online Publication dropdown menu). Please review and share this information with your Girl Scouts and families.

Using the Internet Safely • Girls must read and agree to the Girl Scout Internet Safety Pledge. The pledge can be found at girlscouts.org (Help>Internet Safety Pledge). • A parent, guardian, or other adult must supervise girls when they are participating in any online activity relating to the Treats & Reads Program. • For girls 12 and younger, parents are responsible for managing the girl’s online storefront and for all content. • Girls 13 years and older may use social networking sites to reach customers, but should only use sites that allow the user to restrict access to family and friends known to the Girl Scout. • NOTE: Posting on community Facebook pages or other social media outlets where the girl/ family do NOT control the audience is not permitted. Staying Safe • Adults must accompany Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors when taking orders or delivering product. • Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors must inform an adult about where they will be when participating in the Treats & Reads Program and should always use the buddy system. • A plan to safeguard money should be made in advance. Girl Scout Daisies should not handle money. 11

Safety Review

Girls should wear their Girl Scout clothing/uniform when taking in-person orders and/or delivering product. An adult should always know how and when a girl is participating in the Treats & Reads Program, including when she is using the M2 online platform. Girls should NEVER share their full name, address, phone number, or email with customers they/their families don’t know.

• Distribute nut and candy order card and family information flyer to each girl. • Introduce the theme—Be the Difference. • Discuss ways (online or in person) girls can reach out to customers. • Discuss how girls/families can help earn money for the troop by participating. • Encourage girls to create their online storefront and send at least 15 emails to family and friends. Sending at least 15 emails is one of the requirements for girls to earn both the Fall Me2® Avatar patch AND the Cookie Crossover patch (see page 14 for more information). • Review the safety guidelines on pages 10–11. • Review program dates (see calendar on pages 4–5). • More information about how girls can participate in the Treats & Reads Program can be found on pages 8–9.

Program Overview

Girls and troops are most successful in the Treats & Reads Program when it is included as part of a troop meeting and presented as fun and engaging! Help your girls/families get the most out of the program by covering the topics below.

13

• Discuss the products—magazines and nut and candy items. • Review how customers can purchase products: • Magazines and nut and candy items can be purchased online via a girl’s website • For nut and candy items purchased online, customers can choose in-person delivery or direct ship (customer will pay additional shipping fee). • No additional fee for online in-person delivery or Care to Share purchases. • Care to Share purchases can be made online OR on the nut and candy order card (see page 15 for more information). • Magazines will be direct shipped to the customer. • Nut and candy items can also be purchased via the nut and candy order card. • Nut and candy items ordered online for in-person delivery OR via the order card will be available for the troop to pick up the second week in December.

• Discuss the importance of each girl setting a goal and sharing the goal with family and friends. • Decide on a troop goal (number of products sold, number of emails sent, how the troop will use its proceeds, etc.) • Review the girl rewards on the nut and candy order card (the rewards, including all patches, are also viewable online on a girl’s online storefront). • If the troop is Junior level or older, girls should vote (majority rules) whether or not to take additional proceeds in lieu of girl rewards (troop proceeds will be 17% of troop’s total sale). • Daisy and Brownie troops are required to take the girl reward option.

Product Overview

Goals and Decision Making

• An adult’s contact information should be used for communicating and placing additional orders. • See pages 10–11 in this guide for complete safety information.

The Care to Share program is a partnership between GSOFCT and the American Red Cross, CT Chapter. How can customers make a Care to Share purchase? Customers can make a purchase for the Care to Share program either online and pay with a credit card OR in person on a Girl Scout’s nut and candy order card. When ordered in person on the order card, payment (cash or check payable to GSOFCT) is due at the time of purchase AND the in-person donation purchase will need to be manually added to a girl’s record on the M2 online platform. Online purchases, including Care to Share purchases, are automatically recorded on the M2 online platform and do NOT need to be manually added. Do Care to Share purchases count toward troop proceeds and girl rewards? YES! Care to Share purchases help girls earn higher rewards and help troops earn more proceeds. These purchases also count toward the Troop Reward! Plus, girls earn special rewards just for Care to Share purchases (see sidebar).
