Introduction and icebreaker:

Today we are bringing art to the outdoors through painting, music, and projects to help animals. What is your favorite animal?

Activity 1: Discover art!

Supplies: None

Today we’re going to be artists and make art outdoors. We’re going to look at colors outside like artists do and paint a picture of what we see.

Ask the Girl Scouts:

• What kinds of colorful things do you think we might see outside?

• Where do you go to see art?

• At those places, what kind of art do you think you’d see?

• What makes these things art?

The best thing about art is that it can be found everywhere! Not just inside a museum, or on a wall somewhere. It’s outdoors, too! When you earn this badge, you will walk outside and see a lot of colors, shapes, and ideas for the outdoor art you want to create.

Before we go outside to become outdoor artists, it’s important that we Leave No Trace. This means you need to protect nature and leave it the way you found it.

Activity 2: Make a colorful painting outdoors.

Supplies: Paper, paint brushes, watercolors, water, cup (to rinse brushes)

Our rst outdoor art project is to create a painting of what we see outside. Pick any piece of nature that you see, and paint it with your watercolors.

Activity 3: Make a maraca.

Supplies: Bottle with cap (one per Girl Scout), dry beans, decorating supplies such as permanent markers, paint, stickers, and other art supplies

A maraca is a kind of musical instrument. You can shake a maraca to make music.

Start by decorating a bottle. You can use permanent markers, stickers, or other art supplies to design your maraca. When you’re done decorating your bottle, put dried beans into it. Don’t ll the bottle all the way—you want to have room for them to move when you shake it! Once you have the beans in the bottle, put the cap on. Now you have a maraca!

Test the maracas! Try moving them fast and slow—how does the sound change? Can you make up a fast dance and a slow dance to go with the sounds?

Do you hear any other sounds outside right now? Can you make your maraca sound like them?

Activity 4: Design a birdhouse.

Supplies: Scissors, glue, string, carton (from milk or juice; one per Girl Scout), twig or small stick (one per Girl Scout), decorating supplies such as permanent markers, paint, stickers, and other art supplies

For this project, we will create a birdhouse for your neighborhood birds! Outdoor art, like murals and sculptures, can change the look of an environment. A birdhouse is not only shelter for our ying friends—birds, owls, or bats—it can also look pretty outside.

Take a carton and cut a circle hole in the middle of one side. The hole should be about 1–2 inches across. This is how birds will enter their house! Poke a smaller hole beneath the entrance, just big enough for a small stick to t in. Insert a small stick and glue it in place—this will be a perch for birds to land on. Next, poke a few small holes in the bottom of the carton, so water can drain out. Then, poke a hole on each side near the top of the bird house—this is where we’ll run string so that we can hang the birdhouse. Finally, put string through each of the side holes and tie the ends together so the house can be hung.

Finish your birdhouse by decorating it any way you’d like.

Do you have an outdoor spot where you’ll place (or hang) your birdhouse? Make sure it’s secure and won’t topple over. Birds will use it for shelter and possibly nest their babies there, too.

Ask the Girl Scouts:

• What other art can you think of creating for the outdoors?

• How do you think the art can change the look of the area around it?

Wrap-up:

End the meeting with a friendship circle and a friendship squeeze. Have the Girl Scouts help with any clean-up tasks. Talk about what you are doing at the next meeting, get their ideas for activities, and share upcoming meeting dates, homework, volunteer needs, and other relevant information with caregivers as they arrive for pick-up. Consider sending a follow-up text with this information if needed.

Hoy vamos a ser artistas y crear arte al aire libre. Vamos a observar los colores de la naturaleza como lo hacen los artistas y pintar un cuadro de lo que observamos.

Pregunta a las Girl Scouts:

• ¿Qué tipo de cosas coloridas crees que podríamos ver afuera?

• ¿A qué lugar vas para poder ver obras de arte?

• En esos lugares, ¿qué tipo de arte crees que verás?

• ¿Qué hace que estas cosas sean arte?

¡Lo mejor del arte es que se puede encontrar en todas partes! No solo dentro de un museo o colgado en una pared de algún sitio. ¡También hay arte al aire libre! Para obtener esta insignia, caminarás en la naturaleza y verás muchos colores, formas e ideas que te inspirarán a crear la obra de arte al aire libre que desees.

Antes de salir para convertirnos en artistas al aire libre, es importante recordar que no debemos dejar huella. Esto signi ca que debemos proteger la naturaleza y dejarla tal y como la encontramos.

Actividad 2: Realiza un cuadro colorida al aire libre.

Materiales: Hojas de papel, pinceles, acuarelas (pinturas de agua), agua, vaso (para limpiar los pinceles)

Nuestro primer proyecto de arte al aire libre será crear una pintura de lo que observamos afuera. Elige cualquier parte de la naturaleza que veas y píntala con tus acuarelas.

Actividad 3: Haz una maraca.

Materiales: Botella con tapa (una por Girl Scout), frijoles (secos), materiales para decoración como marcadores permanentes, pinturas, calcomanías y otros materiales de arte

Una maraca es un tipo de instrumento musical, que al agitarse crea música.

Comienza decorando una botella. Puedes usar marcadores permanentes, calcomanías u otros materiales de arte para el diseño de tu maraca. Cuando termines de decorar tu botella, introduce frijoles (secos). No llenes la botella por completo, ¡tienes que dejar espacio para que se muevan cuando la agites! Una vez que hayas introducido los frijoles en la botella, coloca la tapa. ¡Ahora tienes una maraca!

¡Prueba tu maraca! Intenta moverla rápido y lento. ¿Cómo varia (cambia) el sonido? ¿Puedes inventar un baile rápido y un baile lento que vaya acorde con los sonidos?

¿Escuchas algún otro sonido afuera en este momento? ¿Puedes hacer que tu maraca suene como ese sonido?

Actividad 4: Diseña una casita para pájaros.

Materiales: Tijeras, pegamento, cuerda, cartón (de leche o jugo; uno por Girl Scout), ramita o palito pequeño (uno por Girl Scout), materiales para decoración como marcadores permanentes, pinturas, calcomanías y otros materiales de arte

¡Para este proyecto, crearemos una casita para los pájaros que viven en tu vecindario! El arte al aire libre, como los murales y las esculturas, puede cambiar el aspecto de un entorno. Una casita para pájaros no solo es un refugio para nuestros amigos voladores (pájaros, búhos o murciélagos), sino que también puede ser una bonita decoración en el exterior.

Toma una caja de cartón y corta un agujero circular en el medio de uno de los lados. El agujero debe tener entre 1 y 2 pulgadas de ancho. ¡Así entrarán los pájaros a su casa! Haz un agujero más pequeño debajo de la entrada, lo su cientemente grande como para que quepa un palo pequeño. Inserta un palo pequeño en ese agujero y pégalo; será una percha para que se posen las aves.

A continuación, haz algunos agujeros pequeños en el fondo de la caja para que el agua pueda drenar. Después, haz un agujero en cada lado cerca de la parte superior de la casita; aquí es donde pasaremos la cuerda para que podamos colgar la casita para pájaros. Finalmente, pasa una cuerda a través de cada uno de los agujeros laterales y ata los extremos para que la casita pueda colgarse.

Termina tu pajarera decorándola como más te guste.

¿Tienes pensado un lugar al aire libre para colocar tu casita de pájaros? Asegúrate de colocarla correctamente para que esté segura y no se caiga. Las aves la usarán como refugio y posiblemente construyan ahí sus nidos para tener a sus crías.

• ¿Cómo crees que el arte puede cambiar el aspecto del área que lo rodea?

Clausura:

Termina la reunión de Girl Scouts con un círculo de amistad y un apretón de mano. Haz que las Girl Scouts ayuden con las tareas de limpieza. Habla sobre lo que estás planeando para la siguiente reunión, escucha sus ideas para las actividades y comparte las fechas de las siguientes reuniones, la tarea, las necesidades de voluntarios y otra información importante con los padres/tutores cuando lleguen a recoger a las niñas. Considera enviar un mensaje de texto de seguimiento con esta información si es necesario.
