Message from the CEO and Board Chair Dear Gold Award Girl Scouts and Honored Guests, Welcome to the 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout Ceremony, marking the highest honor in Girl Scouting. This year’s ceremony, Gold to Great, recognizes the accomplishments of 60 Gold Award Girl Scouts who are shining examples of young women on a path of achievement, leadership and service. While today commemorates and closes one chapter for these girls, it is the beginning of even greater things to come. To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, each of our girls identified a problem in her community that needed to be addressed. Today we celebrate girls who looked carefully and compassionately to understand deep challenges, ranging from poverty and civic engagement to problems affecting the health of the environment and our elderly. These girls invested no fewer than 80 hours to build an action plan, lead a team and successfully implement their plan to make a positive, lasting difference for neighbors, schools and communities. When you read about these girls and the projects each pursued, prepare to be inspired and encouraged by their passion, perseverance and innovation. In celebrating our Gold Award Girl Scouts, we also must recognize the families, troop leaders and mentors who encouraged them along the way. Today in Girl Scouting, we share the same dedication to Juliette Gordon Low’s legacy of helping girls believe that they can do anything. We honor our founder’s visionary call to action to help girls blaze a trail with courage, confidence and character. Today more than ever, our girls need support to become the leaders of tomorrow. Keynote Speaker Shannon Silsby Shannon grew up in north central Pennsylvania where she joined Girl Scouts while a student at Cochran Elementary School. The oldest of five children, she remembers vividly walking to Girl Scout meetings after school with the quarter for dues in her pocket. Her leader was Danna Rich-Collins, the mother of her dear childhood friend, Megan. It was in Williamsport, PA where Shannon learned the importance of service. Whether in the classroom, on the field or in her community, her passion for organizing to make the world a better place was born from the seed planted at Girl Scouts. Shannon earned her BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before obtaining her MBA in Marketing from the University of Rochester. After 20 years leading global brands for consumer goods leaders like Unilever, today Shannon is a Partner at The Pi Group, a talent advisory consultancy in New York City that specializes in consumer brands. She lives in Darien, Connecticut where she also runs an active household of four children — Grace, Charlie, Jack and Sam — with her husband Jon. Her oldest child, Grace, became a Daisy Girl Scout in 2005 and the second chapter of Shannon’s Girl Scout experience opened as a leader, where another level of learning and growth was found. As a member of her local council leadership team, Girl Scouts membership grew double digits for a decade. Shannon is a celebrated community leader having served on the Boards of the Council of Darien School Parents, Royle Elementary School and Middlesex Middle School Executive Councils, YWCA of Darien-Norwalk, Darien Democratic Town Committee and as an elected member of Darien’s Representative Town Meeting. She serves as a Team Manager for the Darien Junior Football League and has taught Faith Formation at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, for the last decade. Shannon began the first chapter of Let Me Run, a program dedicated to developing young men of character through running. She is a recognized trailblazer in all she does and treasures her Volunteer of the Year Award from the Girl Scouts of Darien.
As young Girl Scouts, our Kaper Chart made it clear what our job was at the meeting or on the camping trip. This cornerstone of girl scouting taught me that every role is essential to progress; that flexibility is fuel for growth and that everyone matters.
A former All American athlete, Shannon finds her best thinking done while on her daily run but also relishes the riches of a fabulous book or her latest needlepoint project in between carpool runs. She also believes the future is female.

Mistress of Ceremonies Valerie Pritchett Valerie Pritchett co-anchors abc27 News at 5 and abc27 News at 7. A project close to her heart is “Val’s Kids,” which features children in foster care who, through the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network, are looking for adoptive homes. You can watch Val’s Kids on abc27 News at 7 on Wednesdays and on abc27 News at 6 on Sundays. Valerie is also a former Girl Scout. One of her fondest memories is selling cookies through the Girl Scout Cookie Program. It beefed up her public speaking and sales skills. Valerie helped her station win a Service to Community Award from the National Association of Broadcasters, one of the highest honors a broadcast television station can earn, for Operation Safe Kids. She produced the program and reported in Harrisburg neighborhoods through the month of October 2010 to promote fire safety and the installation of smoke alarms after a fatal fire in the city.

A dedicated community volunteer, Valerie is the honorary chair for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Valerie also assists Susquehanna Service Dogs with dog raising and sitting. Valerie assists many other nonprofit organizations. She is also a member of the United Way of the Capital Region’s Women’s Leadership Network. Valerie serves on the Salvation Army Advisory and Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art, as well as Catholic Charities boards.

Earning the Gold Award is a Girl Scout’s highest honor. This prestigious award is earned by a select group of Girl Scouts who demonstrate a higher commitment to improving their communities and advocating for lasting change. Since last April, more than 60 Girl Scouts from our 30-county footprint in Central and northeastern Pennsylvania earned the Gold Award. The road to the Gold Award begins with discovery. Each girl uses her own values and skills to identify a community issue she is passionate about and then determines the topic and audience for her project. Before proceeding, each girl submits a project proposal to the Gold Award Committee. Mentors work with each Girl Scout to support the development of their projects, alongside each girl’s Gold Award Advisor. While working on her project, each Girl Scout dedicates herself to advancing her cause and accomplishing her goal. All of the projects completed this year will have a lasting and positive impact on our region and beyond. The Gold Award Girl Scouts for 2018 have exhibited outstanding leadership, exceptional organizational skills and a sincere commitment to investing in their communities. Congratulations to all of our Gold Award Girl Scouts! The following pages feature the 2018 Gold Award Girl Scouts and descriptions of their projects. By necessity, the descriptions are brief and may not fully describe the scope of each girl’s work.

Gold Award Girl Scouts
Madeline Beckley Camp Hill, PA Disability — Puppy Sitter Palooza Madeline took action to address a gap in training between puppy raisers and puppy sitters by building on her own experience in working with service dogs. She determined specific needs using a survey; then developed a series of solutions by creating a manual for puppy sitters to emphasize consistent training techniques; and organized a library of video training resources.
Katherine Bair Port Matilda, PA Education — Gray’s Woods Summer Reading Program and Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center Free Library Katherine installed a Free Library at a local environmental center to increase interest in reading among elementary students. To encourage the students to meet their reading goals, she facilitated fun activities for them during the Summer Reading Program at her local library.
Kaitlyn Baldwin York, PA STEM — Girls in STEM Kaitlyn took action to increase interest in STEM careers among girls in her community. She organized and facilitated a series of classes for 7th and 8th grade girls, where they worked together to complete STEM projects. She also created a blog to give more girls access to STEM resources.

Olivia Bender Picture Rocks, PA Environment and Sustainability — Picture Rocks Pollinators Olivia planted a pollinator-friendly garden in her town to support and strengthen the populations of endangered species such as bees, butterflies, moths, birds and even spiders! The garden’s perennial plants and well-maintained location make it the perfect environment for pollinators.
Kaitlyn Bowser Greencastle, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — Cue the Music Kaitlyn organized a series of musical events to share her passion for music and boost retention rates among her school’s concert band. Her events gave younger students the opportunity to interact with experienced band members and receive feedback about their musical skills and instrument choices.

York, PA Civic Engagement — Building Shelves for Church Thrift Shop Clare helped her church relocate their Thrift Store to better their ability to offer affordable clothing to families with low incomes. She built several shoe shelves for the store, which allowed them to display an additional 30 pairs of shoes and increased sales.
Swoyersville, PA Education — The Little Library of Swoyersville Grace increased accessibility to books within her community by installing a Little Free Library. The book donations were so successful, she was also able to donate books to kindergarten classrooms at her local elementary school, preschool and special needs classrooms, and to a community in Houston, TX affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Alexandra Bruder Fairfield, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — Music Camp Alexandra organized and facilitated three after school camps for middle school students to encourage their interest in choir or concert band. The sessions included mentoring from older students on technique, dynamics, and balancing music with school and other activities.
Sarah Chacko Mechanicsburg, PA Education — CV HOSA: Bringing Health Career Opportunities to the “Heart” of PA Sarah started a chapter of HOSA Future Health Professionals at her high school. Thanks to her efforts, students will be able to explore health professions and have access to better opportunities as they pursue the health sciences.
Madelynne Collins Carlisle, PA Healthy Relationships — Cleaning out the Closet Madelynne organized the linen closet at a local domestic violence shelter. She created brochures on teen dating violence to distribute to her school counselors, teachers, and nurses. Throughout Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, Madelynne also shared statistics and advice with her peers via her school’s morning announcements.
Katelyn Danczyk York, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — York Catholic Music Association Outreach Katelyn created a website for her school marching band to better communication between members of the band, parents, and the community and to increase appreciation for arts programs. The website includes important schedule information, photos and videos of performances, and additional resources.
Ashly Dodd Leola, PA Environment and Sustainability — Leola School Garden and Club Ashly restored an overgrown courtyard at her local elementary school and built two raised bed gardens for growing vegetables. She organized a gardening club for 3rd and 4th graders. The club encourages healthy eating habits and provides hands-on learning experiences for students.
Alisan Dodd Leola, PA Sports — Introduction to Dance and Exercise Club Alisan got students at her local elementary school moving by starting a Dance and Exercise club to promote physical activity and body positivity. The club inspired girls to get active and to encourage others in the community to join them.

Samantha Dyer Berwick, PA Sports — Clothing Drive for Proper Running Attire Samantha organized an ongoing drive to provide athletic apparel to low income students in her school’s running club. She also created a brochure with information about running safety and tips, which was distributed to existing and potential members of the club. Thanks to her efforts, students can run with confidence and maintain healthy lifestyles.
Katherine Flanagan Hummelstown, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — Improving English Fluency in Guatemala Katherine lead multiple Skype sessions with women in Guatemala to help them further their understanding of English language and culture, which should allow them to pursue better career opportunities. She created audiovisual presentations about select American cities and had them recorded in a variety of voices to create audio diversity.
Sarah Frick Hummelstown, PA Human Rights — Spreading Awareness about Human Trafficking Sarah researched the statistics on human trafficking in preparation for a service trip to Nepal and decided to take action to spread awareness about the issue among her peers. She created informational pamphlets, brochures, posters, and presentations about how young adults can protect themselves and others and held multiple information sessions at her church, library, and school.

Mary Gentile Hershey, PA Education – BookNook Mary installed a BookNook at her school to share her passion for reading and provide students with a place to relax and de-stress. She requested help from her classmates to construct and decorate the Nook while she developed the database system for recordkeeping.
Rebecca Glusco Dallastown, PA Education — Operation Little Library Rebecca built and installed a Little Free Library at her local park to provide access to books and encourage reading among children in her community.
Tatum Gramly Mifflinburg, PA STEM — Curriculum Plan for STEM Program Tatum created detailed STEM curriculums for her local library program to encourage young girls to embrace STEM careers and interests. The curriculum is designed for girls ages 6-12 and includes experiments, activities, and information about STEM professions.
Jessica Griel State College, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — Feeding Nicaragua Jessica traveled to Nicaragua with Tikkun Olam Nicaragua in order to help solve the hunger problem the country faces. Jessica was able to provide soup packets, rice, beans and salt as well as diapers, feminine products, soap and lotion.

Miami, FL Military/Veterans Affairs — Jamila’s Patriot Project Jamila shared her passion for golfing with wounded veterans by fundraising to secure a second ParaGolfer at a Florida golf course in her hometown. The ParaGolfer allows a person without the use of their lower limbs to stand securely and swing a golf club. Jamila also volunteers weekly at the golf course to train veterans on how to use the ParaGolfer, so they can play golf and master new skills.
New Cumberland, PA Disaster Relief — Stormwater Educational Kiosk and Awareness Signs Nicole installed signage and an informational kiosk at her township building and adjacent park. The signs and kiosk educate visitors about the Stormwater Best Management Practices implemented there and how people can help protect and improve the quality of local waterways.
Dorrie Hammond Fairfield, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — FAHS “Prop Closet”/Room Makeover Dorrie renovated her school drama department’s prop room to help it better serve future student productions. She cleaned it out, repainted, and created a new system of organization to keep the room a positive and stress-free environment for years to come.
Madeline Harmes Lititz, PA Education — Warwick High School Career Fair Madeline provided her peers with knowledge of how they can apply their skills and talents to a career by organizing a Career Fair at her school. She also compiled a booklet of the volunteers who attended, which included their profession and education background, to keep as a reference in the school library.
Caitlyn Harper Camp Hill, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — One Small World Caitlyn increased cultural awareness in her community by creating the Culture Club at her high school. With the help of the club, she worked with members of the community to organize the first annual International Fair, where traditions from all over the world were shared and celebrated.
Anna Howie York, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — Art Beyond the Classroom Anna shared her passion for art by painting a mural at her local elementary school. The mural will inspire school spirit, appreciation for the arts, and serve as a reminder of the benefits of funding art programs in schools.
Carole Imgrund Penns Creek, PA Disaster Relief — Covering the Nations with Love Carole created care packages for orphaned children and low income families in the Philippines to provide comfort and educational opportunities. The packages included sheets or blankets, reading books, and other educational tools. Carole also set up a website with resources for others looking to help children in the Philippines.
Kate Kindelberger Elizabethtown, PA Education — “Born Learning Trail” Installation Kate worked with her local United Way to create a walking trail outfitted with early learning educational signs. Thanks to her efforts, young children in her community can connect with nature while learning.

Allyson Koda Hershey, PA Disability — Pro-Lexia: Youths Advocating for Dyslexia Allyson gave students with dyslexia the tools and self-confidence to advocate for what they need to be successful. She started an in-person club and created a website that allows peers to tutor each other, share tips and life skills, and demonstrate how to use assistive technology.
Jocelyn Little Camp Hill, PA Disability — PAWS for Kindness Jocelyn trained a Service Dog in Training through Susquehanna Service Dogs. In addition, she also began a club at her school to educate the public on Service Dogs in Training, attempted to change the Service Dog in Training access policy at her school, and collected items needed by Susquehanna Service Dogs.
Geneva Maldonado Bushkill, PA Civic Engagement — Patriotism in the Community Geneva beautified a lonely flagpole in her community and turned it into a memorial garden in honor of those who have served in the armed forces. She built new benches and added lights to illuminate the flag at night. Thanks to her hard work, the garden now serves as a place of peace, reflection and patriotism.

Sulai Malpica Bushkill, PA Environment and Sustainability — Pollinators in Action Sulai constructed three mason bee houses in her community to provide the native pollinators with a safe space to lay their eggs. With the mason bee population on a steady decline, these self-sustaining houses will help the bees further their species and preserve the environment they maintain through pollination.
Elizabeth McCombs Leola, PA STEM — Girls After School STEM Club Elizabeth planned and facilitated an after school program for middle school girls to encourage their interest in STEM fields. The program included handson activities, female guest speakers from STEM careers, and a website with resources and current events from women in STEM.
Elizabeth McCurdy Hershey, PA Sports — We ALL Play Ball Elizabeth organized a co-ed whiffle ball game for ages 8 through 10 to promote gender equality in youth athletics. She also saved a baseball/softball field from demolition by renovating the outdated fence and storage boxes. Thanks to her efforts, the field will serve as a “common ground” for both male and female leagues.
Kali Mellin Mayfield, PA Military/Veteran Affairs — Operation Paperback Book Drive Kali organized a book drive to collect reading material for active and veteran military personnel and families. She invited a representative from the PA Dept. of Military and Veteran Affairs to speak at her drive to inform community members of their offered services and educate people on how they can get involved.
Audralaine Mentrikoski Mountain Top, PA Health — Purse and Toiletry Drive for Homeless Women Audralaine offered support and comfort to homeless women by collecting purses and stuffing them with essential care items for donation to local shelters. She distributed flyers to educate the community on the causes of homelessness in women, especially domestic violence, and encouraged people to volunteer at shelters.
Charlotte Molitoris Lancaster, PA Education — What’s Next? Mentoring Program Charlotte understands the pressure of what a student has to decide as they transition out of high school. Through her project, Charlotte created a program that matched retired teachers with juniors & seniors to help create goals to achieve after high school ends.
Marissa Mondock State College, PA Children’s Issues — Take Away Activity Boxes Marissa provided comfort to those who have lost everything by creating age-specific boxes of toys and games for children entering domestic violence shelters. The children will feel a sense of ownership of their box, and will be able to take it with them to their new home.
Maya Mondock State College, PA Poverty — Blankets for the Homeless Maya used her sewing skills to warm the homeless and ease their transition into subsidized housing. She recycled old fabric and used hotel bedding, and turned them into twin sized blankets for donation. She also created design samples and templates of the blankets for future use by other volunteers.
Carleigh Moss Windsor, PA Environment and Sustainability — Step Forward Carleigh took action to reduce the cost of fresh produce and provide healthier food options to her community. She built a community garden in which individuals or local businesses could support a plot and then choose where to donate the produce from that plot, allowing the fresh vegetables to reach a wide range of low income families.
Nicole Pandolfi State College, PA Environment and Sustainability — Hydro Help Nicole knew that the Penn State University food bank is not permitted to carry perishable items and thus, many students struggling with food insecurity do not have access to fresh foods. She created hydroponic growing kits for the food bank to put the growing process in the hands of the students while providing them with all the necessary components to grow fresh, perennial vegetables at no cost.
Sofia Pascuzzo Schuylkill Haven, PA Sports — Swimming for All Ages Sofia wanted to ensure that her community was educated on the topic of accidental drownings and help to combat this issue. She held a day where she taught all ages swimming and tactics to be safe while swimming. She was able to reach 116 individuals through her work.
Megan Petrine State College, PA Environment and Sustainability — Reuse It or Lose It Megan created a website to share ideas on how people can have a positive impact on the environment by reusing old materials and reducing consumption. She also visited elementary school classrooms and presented ways young people can make art or practical products using common “one-use” items.

Annika Richards Hershey, PA Elderly Issues — Music Masters Annika helped young musicians overcome the anxiety of performing on stage by organizing and facilitating a four week program for girls. The participants learned coping skills and helpful tips for stage fright from a clinical psychologist and performed in front of residents of a local senior home.
Allison Rodgers New Freedom, PA Civic Engagement — Young Life Color Splash Allison created and organized a Color Splash 5k for Young Life of Southern York County to encourage young people in her community to learn about and get involved in Young Life Christian Youth Ministry. Her 5k course will continue to be used by Summit Grove Camp for future running events.
Kylie Saar Etters, PA Elderly Issues — Music and the Nursing Home Kylie shared her passion for music with residents at her local nursing home by inviting them to sing alongs she planned and facilitated. She successfully engaged the residents in a new activity, and saw an increase in the number of participants and their excitement about the songs and music.
Elizabeth Scanlan Mountain Top, PA Children’s Issues — Color Me Impressed Elizabeth created her own coloring books, and collected donated crayons, to brighten the days of hospitalized children. The coloring pages were all created by children in her community.
Alexia Shiffer Pine Grove, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — The Marching Cardinals Band Recruitment Video Alexia produced a video about the Pine Grove Area High School Marching Band to use as a recruitment tool for years to come. She saw a spike in the number of middle school students who were interested in band because of her efforts.

Jermyn, PA Elderly Issues — A Night to Remember Lauren brought smiles to the faces of senior citizens at a local nursing home by using their facility to host a Senior Prom. By bringing the prom, and her peers, to the nursing home, Lauren helped to connect two very different age groups and provide a night of socialization and fun for all.

Nesquehoning, PA Sports — Strengthening Character and Minimizing Bullying at Youth Cheer Camp Michaela organized and facilitated a youth cheer camp at her high school. Experienced cheerleaders not only taught cheer skills, but shared ways to boost self-esteem and confidence and prevent bullying.
Mechanicsburg, PA Poverty — Pantry Patrol Anna reorganized her local food pantry to help it better serve her community. Her labeling system made the pantry more accessible and safe, and the handbook she created allows volunteers to provide consistent, efficient service.

Berwick, PA Children’s Issues — Game Night Faith brought normalcy back into the lives of children with extended hospital stays by organizing a monthly game night. Local high school volunteers brought card and board games to play with the patients. Faith donated the games to the hospital for future use.
Mechanicsburg, PA Elderly Issues — Music Enjoyment for the Elderly Olivia facilitated a monthly music program at her local nursing home to increase the quality of the residents’ time there. Participants sang songs and played musical instruments. She also created a binder of songs and ideas to keep at the nursing home for future use.
Grace Walsh Lewisburg, PA Education — Kindergarten QR Code Library Grace developed a Quick Response Code reading library for six kindergarten classrooms to help students keep up with rapid technology advancements that make cassette tapes obsolete. Thanks to her efforts, kindergarten students can now easily scan and find books using smart devices.
Falon Weaver Lewisberry, PA Education — Design, Construct, and Install Three Free Little Library Units Falon shared her love of reading a good book by building and installing three Free Little Libraries across her community to make accessing and sharing books a more convenient and fun experience.
Kayla Wilder Mechanicsburg, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — Hampden Elementary Sculpture & Rock Garden Kayla shared her passion and excitement for art with her school community by constructing a sculpture of their school mascot to be displayed at the main entrance. Each student decorated a rock to add to the base of the sculpture.
Rachel Worley East Berlin, PA Sports — Get Moving with Tennis Rachel organized and facilitated tennis clinics to promote exercise and healthy eating while introducing young students to basic tennis skills. She also created a tennis basics video to share with others outside the clinics.
Allison Zajac State College, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — The Knitting Box Allison held loom knitting lessons at her local library to help share the skill with young people in her community. She also created a box with the necessary supplies and instructions for knitting winter hats. The box will be kept and maintained at the library to help others try knitting on their own.
Rebecca Zemaitis New Cumberland, PA Civic Engagement — Garden of Eat’n Rebecca felt inspired to make an impact at a local shelter for homeless women and children. She worked together with the individuals in the shelter to create a garden from which they were able to cultivate fresh produce. She also taught the women and children how to make healthy meals using food from the garden.
Margaret Zuvich Harrisburg, PA Arts, Culture & Heritage — Tranquility Garden Margaret created a Tranquility Garden to allow community members to de-stress and to promote mental and physical wellness. She included a community herb garden to encourage healthy eating choices and beautified the space with colorful flowers and stepping stones.
