Dear Friends and Supporters, The second century of Girl Scouting began in 2013, and across central and northeast Pennsylvania 24,207 Girl Scouts participated in a health and wellness initiative, upgraded and expanded camping opportunities, and the wonderful feeling of being in a troop of girls that explores many facets of community and life. GSHPA provided financial aid to help 4,541 low income girls across our thirty-county footprint participate in Girl Scouts, and we established Girl Scout programs in many urban schools. We watched as another generation of girls honed their business skills at our “Cookie College” and were delighted to see troops travel to Savannah and even Europe using their hard earned cookie sale proceeds. Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania introduced an anti-bullying program for Cadettes. We learned, as we worked with groups of 60-75 girls at Camp Small Valley, just how necessary it is to help girls address this problem. left: Carolyn Warman, Board Chair right: Jane Ransom, President & CEO

GSHPA members exceeded our benchmarks of successful outcomes in Girl Scouting. • 80 percent of our girls reported learning how to develop and implement a plan • 73 percent reported an increasing ability to build healthy relationships, and • 72 percent reported they were learning to make healthy choices We could not be prouder to both assist girls in building healthy relationships and leadership abilities they can use right now, while knowing that we are seeding our communities with future women leaders at the same time. Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania continued to implement our five-year business plan to increase the financial stability of the council during FY13 and pushed hard toward the end of our $5 million 100th anniversary fundraising campaign. We also launched a board-led strategic planning process because we know that Girl Scouts must continue to adapt to the changing needs and experiences of the girls we serve and the volunteers who are on the front line of mission delivery.

Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

GSHPA took many actions to deal with the headwinds facing Girl Scouts and many other youth organizations with respect to membership recruitment and retention. We expanded and restructured our membership staff and significantly upgraded our capacity by adding a more comprehensive membership database. Without the leadership of our volunteers, the support of our donors, and the commitment of our staff none of these many accomplishments would have been possible. We thank you all for your continued investment in girls and our future. Sincerely,

Carolyn Warman Board Chair

Jane B. Ransom President & CEO

... Investing in the Outdoor nce Experie ... Girl Scout Camp is a time honored tradition that stirs up nostalgic memories in many alumnae. With GSHPA’s renewed investment in providing girls with a great outdoor experience, we are paving the way for today’s Girl Scouts to enjoy camp in a whole new way! Since the 2011 approval of the camp development plan, GSHPA has made some exciting progress on our campgrounds. • Replaced existing horse barns with new stables at Camp Archbald and Camp Small Valley. • Built Ga-Ga courts and permanent archery ranges at Camp Archbald and Camp Small Valley. • Added a high ropes course, a low ropes course, a zip line and a climbing tower at Camp Small Valley. • Installed a zip line, a climbing tower and a low ropes course at Camp Archbald. • Addition of the indoor traverse climbing wall at Camps Echo Trail, Furnace Hills, Golden Pond and Louise. • Began construction on Camp Archbald’s new dining hall. • Created a YURT village at Camp Small Valley to increase overnight capacity by 40 girls. • Relocated Camp Echo Trail teepees for a shady retreat. • Added Gobbler’s Glen to our overnight options at Camp Happy Valley. • Renovated the Health Center at Camp Louise to increase year-round camping options. In addition to the camp improvements, we have expanded our outdoor volunteer training opportunities to help build their skills or learn something new like backpacking, flat water canoeing, adventure course, low ropes and high ropes! GSHPA not only trained volunteers, but provided them with opportunities to become certified in a number of courses, such as archery, lifeguarding, and CPR & First Aid. Volunteers were trained conveniently on our camp properties over a day or even an action packed weekend throughout fiscal year 2013.

There are still naming opportunities available, call 717.233.5097 or email dhess@gshpa.org.

Redefining the Girl Scout Community

Girl Scouts Pledge a New Healthy Promise On October 20th, 2012 over 450 Girl Scouts gathered at Central York High School, as GSHPA danced its way into the new signature program, Healthy Promise, with ”Jumping with Jill” the nation’s only rock star nutritionist. Girl Scouts also climbed a rock wall, learned fit tips with the York College Spartans, and ran soccer drills. This action-packed start to GSHPA’s two year, council-wide health initiative was just a warm up for what would prove to be a successful— and fun— first year commitment to health for girls in grades K-12. Over the year, girls learned how to be active for at least 60 minutes a day and live a healthy and confident lifestyle. The Healthy Promise Program provided:

• 1 ,016 interested Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior & Ambassador troops received free Healthy Promise guides filled with fun and healthy activities for all troop levels.

• A live web-streaming Healthy Promise video chat series called “Healthy Cooking with Chef Jenn” introduced girls from across our council to simple healthy cooking recipes via the comfort of their home computers.

• A Million Mile Challenge kick off with softball Olympian and ESPN commentator Jessica Mendoza challenged over 500 participants to add more activity to their everyday to-do list.

• A ccess to innovative and accessible resources offered in partnership with the Byrnes Health Education Center’s very own learntobehealthy.org website.

Healthy Promise gave our Girl Scouts the knowledge and motivation to get moving and finish year one strong as they prepared to sprint forward into the second year of healthy living!

After conducting in depth research and listening to our volunteers from all five of our regions, GSHPA redefined our Girl Scout Service Units in summer 2013 to more consistently align them with the strengths, time and talents of today’s Girl Scout volunteers and by putting service unit leadership back in the very qualified hands of local volunteer leadership. To do so, GSHPA first updated the purpose of our service units to ensure that 100% of volunteers’ time was dedicated to offering a great Girl Scout experience at a local effort. The updated purpose now focused all efforts on the following: • Plan and implement local events and activities for girls. • Organize local volunteer support, networking and appreciation efforts. • Assist in the recruitment of new girl and adult members throughout the local area. • Help raise funds in support of financial assistance for girls. From the purpose, four key shifts were then implemented during summer 2013: • Renamed the Service Units to Girl Scout Communities. • Renamed the Service Unit Manager to Community Lead. • Consolidated 113 Service Units to 84 volunteer-led Girl Scout Communities to guarantee that every Community had volunteer leadership in place. • Created a clearer definition of the responsibilities and roles of Membership Associate, Membership Recruiter and Community Lead to return to a truly volunteer-led Girl Scout model.

Donor Spotlight When lifetime members Bill and Sharon Hoffmann, of Williamsport, PA, talk about the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA), it is a series of stories, or rather lifelong memories, that spans generations, state lines, and even oceans. Sharon’s passion for the Girl Scouts stems from her childhood when she was a Girl Scout, but she considers her greatest achievement within the organization as being a Girl Scout Leader. “Being a leader and working with the girls is why I support today,” she said, “It opens up opportunities and gives girls a chance to just be girls.” When she was a leader she helped open opportunities by taking the girls, some of whom had never previously left the state, on camping trips out west and overseas adventure. Now she opens opportunities up through her financial support. Bill Hoffmann was thrown into his first experience when he traveled with Sharon and a Girl Scout troop on a European trip in the 1980’s. Bill recognizes that being a part of the Girl Scouts gives girls opportunities like travel and also believes that it is a “benefit to society and encourages everyone to get along better” as reflected in the Girl Scout Law. Over the years Bill and Sharon Hoffmann have served on various committees, held board positions, and have continued to financially support GSHPA through donations. Sharon and Bill took turns telling stories from the past, but also looked forward. Sharon, who confesses she still sings Girl Scout camp songs in her car, proudly said, “I believe every girl should have the opportunity for Girl Scouts.”
