Every Girl Scout should have the opportunity to play with robots, explore the animal kingdom, or dive into virtual reality. GSHPA has expanded its mobile programming to bring more of these opportunities to you! In 2018 – 2019, we’re offering 18 unique programming options that are sure to unleash her inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)!

Getting outdoors gives girls the opportunity to seek new challenges in a safe, supportive environment. Whether she’s taking the Leap of Faith at summer camp or a nature walk with her troop, outdoor experiences can play an important role in her leadership development. At GSHPA, our outdoor programming is designed to provide girls with the skills and the confidence to step outside their comfort zones, reach new heights, and embark on exciting, girl-led adventures!

Volunteers Lead the Way At GSHPA, we love to boast about our volunteers because when it comes to providing quality, educational, and exciting programming—they truly lead the way! We’re shining a light on three volunteer-led programs available through GSHPA: Nature Explorers, Foxfire House, and backpacking.

Nature Explorers consists

Foxfire House, a historic

of a group of volunteers, many current and former teachers, whose goal is to bring fun, nature-based programs to girls across our footprint. With Nature Explorers, girls can explore the wide expanses of ocean habitats, get down to the nitty-gritty of Rocks and Minerals, or get up close and personal with insects, reptiles, and more! In 2018–2019, Nature Explorers will be offering a Stars and Constellations program in the fall and an Endangered Species program in the spring at Camp Small Valley and Camp Happy Valley. You can find additional information about these events on our Event calendar.

home in Lancaster County, gives girls the opportunity to leave their tech at the door and step into life as it was in the early 1800s. Volunteers, dressed in traditional costumes, encourage girls to touch, play, and truly live in one of GSHPA’s best kept resources for exciting, educational programming. “When I put that costume on, the girls’ eyes just light up,” says Connie Gehman, long-time Girl Scout and current chair of the Foxfire House Committee. Foxfire House offers on and off-site programming for Brownies through Ambassadors. Younger girls make pretzels, crafts, and play games, while older girls explore traditional cooking on a template stove or Squirrel Tail oven, quilting, and other more advanced projects. “It’s a valuable experience for girls to be part of preserving the past,” Gehman adds. Every girl is invited to feel the Foxfire spirit and connect with a unique, cultural history, as so many girls before her have done. “The girls need to re-connect to the natural world with handson experiences that help them understand how everything fits together in life. They need to understand their place as stewards of this earth at a time when many of the earth’s resources are being threatened,” says Yvonne Baldwin, a former teacher and dedicated Girl Scout of over 50 years, who writes and facilitates programs for Nature Explorers.

If girls are looking to take their adventures on the move along the Appalachian trail and beyond, they should look no further than our volunteer-led backpacking program! Starting with Level 1, also known as the Greenhorn level, girls will spend a weekend camping outdoors and learning the backpacking basics like how and what to pack, using a backpacking stove, setting up a backpacking tent, and more. As girls get older and gain experience, the program becomes more challenging with extended trips, longer distances, and more girl leadership opportunities. “It’s not easy carrying a full pack five or six miles, and it’s amazing to see these girls—some whom have never met—work together to problem-solve and help each other,” says Connie Scheunemann, a current volunteer with the backpacking program. “It makes them realize how their actions can and do affect others.” To begin at the Greenhorn level, girls must be a Junior or above, and they must be a Cadette or above to progress to Level 2. This is an individual girl program, therefore girls are not required to attend with a troop and can progress through the program at their own pace. Each of these programs offers a unique experience for girls and adults alike. Recognizing Outstanding GSHPA Troop Leaders Congratulations to Brenda Crosley and Lesley McDermott, co-leaders of GSHPA Troop 30363, who have been honored for their outstanding volunteer service with the Volunteer of Excellence Award and the Appreciation Pin. The GSHPA Volunteer Recognition Committee presents the Appreciation Pin, a nationally recognized award, to registered adult Girl Scouts who go above and beyond expectations for the positions held and exhibit exemplary service in delivering the Girl Scout Experience. The Committee presents the Volunteer of Excellence Award to volunteers who give exceptional service to a specific Girl Scout community—in this case, Luzerne County. Some of their favorite Girl Scout memories include hiking, attending the STEM Expo, creating impromptu recipes in a creative cooking session, camping, building a picnic table, and sleeping overnight in the Goosebumps exhibit at the Da Vinci Center.

Crosley and McDermott plan on expanding their girls’ experiences in an upcoming trip to the Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park, and white water rafting.

“We try to think outside the box with what we can do with them,” says McDermott. “There’s just so much that Girl Scouts offers,” Crosley adds. “It’s so nice to give the girls different experiences.” Both award winners have generated significant funding of Financial Assistance for girls who need help to participate. The recognition of these awards celebrates Crosley and McDermott’s commitment to their troop, their community, and the world. Most importantly, these two leaders model for girls the qualities that all Girl Scouts can aspire to build.

Since our PPL-sponsored STEM Mobile first hit the road nearly two years ago, Girl Scouts throughout GSHPAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 30-county footprint in south central and northeastern Pennsylvania have been busy exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math through our Girls Go STEM program. They are building their skills and confidence, and preparing themselves for future careers in the high-demand fields STEM offers.

At the program’s inception, girls chose from four different curriculums offered out of the STEM Mobile, including Virtual Reality, Robotics and Coding, Motion Commotion, and Biodiversity Bonanza; each of which are hands-on, can be adapted to all age levels, and provide opportunities for experimentation, problemsolving, testing of hypotheses, and environmental awareness.

Any of the 18 mobile programming topics available through the STEM Mobile can be requested by using an easy online registration process, allowing troops and Service Units to plan well in advance. The entire mobile schedule of programs, along with registration information, is detailed on our online event calendar. With the addition Program descriptions of two more STEM Mobile units, on page 8. one sponsored by Pennsylvania College of Technology, mobile programming easily spans GSHPA’s 30-county territory. Mobile programs are more closely aligned to GSLE (Girl Scout Leadership Experience) materials, so girls who participate in programs

Financial Assistance Finances should NEVER be a barrier to any girl’s participation in Girl Scouts. • GSHPA is committed to offering financial resources to girls and families who otherwise would be unable to participate in Girl Scouts due to financial barriers. • Girls who qualify for financial assistance have their national membership dues paid for ($25) and an additional $44 is deposited into their troop’s bank account for troop dues, funds, uniform costs, etc.

• If interested in filling out an application, a parent or guardian must select “Request Aid” during the renewal or registration process. • GSHPA’s Membership Services team will send an online form to complete to determine eligibility for financial assistance. This is then processed and a response is given to the family (either way) via email.

• More dollars are being set aside for financial assistance again in the upcoming membership year to ensure every girl who needs financial resources can receive them. • New in 2018 and again offered in 2019—GSHPA is committed to offering financial assistance to girls who would like to attend an outdoor experience and/or Service Unit day camp. We know that girls want outdoor experiences and want to ensure they are able to afford these experiences. Through an approval process, Service Units were able to have their Day Camps eligible for members to receive financial assistance. GSHPA provided financial resources to 218 girls at 30 different SU day camps this year. “Half of our 54 attendees received financial assistance to attend our week-long day camp this year. Had it not been for financial aid, chances are these girls would not have come to the camp. These girls really needed camp—to be outside all day, to be with other girls to have fun, go hiking, make crafts, etc.” —Linda Davis, Service Unit 715, Lancaster County Service Unit Day Camp

Daisy Scout “Tula Petal” Badge Workshop Sunday, April 28, 2019 from 12 – 2 p.m. Daisy scouts will earn their Tula petal by learning how to be courageous and strong. Activities include art projects around the theme of courage and planting a seed to take home.

Junior Scout “Flowers Naturalist” Badge Workshop Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Junior scouts will dig up flower facts when earning this naturalist badge. Activities include going on a flower hunt, dying flowers, investigating the benefit of plants and creating a floral arrangement. Brownie Girl Scout “Senses” Badge Workshop Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Girls can exercise all of their senses during this interactive workshop. Activities include a hunt through the museum, a make-and-take touch chart and a trip to the Chocolate Lab.

Junior Girl Scout “Playing the Past” Badge Workshop Saturday, April 6, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Girls will experience the many stories of Hershey through the eyes of girls and women who lived long ago. Scouting for History-Earn a Hershey Story Patch! Explore the Museum Experience with a scavenger hunt created especially for Scouts. The hunt, which satisfies some scouting requirements, stresses Milton Hershey’s example as an entrepreneur and philanthropist. “Scouting for History” is available to Scout groups or individuals at any time; Museum Experience admission must be purchased to complete the guide.
