Invest in Girls. Change the World. Dear Friends, In early 2014 supporters of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) gathered at our main office to toast the success of our three-year Inspiring Generations campaign. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts, GSHPA raised $5 million with one aim in mind—to assure that Girl Scouting in our region of central and northeastern Pennsylvania remains alive and well as we begin the second century in our history.

Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

The return on investment is already visible. In 2014 girls across our footprint enjoyed renovated camp facilities and participated in GSHPA’s signature health and wellness initiative. Middle school girls spent weekends tackling the problem of bullying, while our youngest members tried their hand at the cookie business for the first time. In-school programs helped girls from the most distressed school districts in the region participate in the fun and traditions of Girl Scouting. The number of girls achieving our highest award—the Gold Award—grew by 12%. And all of us benefited as these Gold Awardees poured over 8,000 hours of volunteer time into bettering our communities. Through membership in Girl Scout troops, thousands of girls gained access to these and myriad other exciting programs. Their leaders—our adult volunteers—made sure that their girls experienced the powerful sisterhood that is the Girl Scout troop. Throughout these pages, we celebrate exciting successes, but we know we must be strategic with our resources moving forward. That is why our Board of Directors undertook strategic planning in 2014, developing a multi-year plan which we will begin to unroll this year. Its primary goal is to connect more girls to the Girl Scout experience so that they may share in fun and discovery while growing into confident women in charge of their own lives and leaders in their communities. GSHPA and our 20,000+ girl members would not be where we are today without significant investments of time and resources from our volunteers and supporters. We are enormously grateful that you are a member of our Girl Scout family dedicated to investing in girls who change our world. Sincerely,

Carolyn Warman Board Chair

The Gift of Camp Lasts a Lifetime “I wish people knew what camp means to the girls,” said Mimi Barash Coppersmith of State College who established the Mimi Coppersmith Barash Fund for Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA, which supports girls in need who wish to attend Girl Scout camp. “It is the best investment that people can make to ensure that young girls know how to embrace themselves.” Mimi knows from experience how powerful the gift of camp can be. As a girl she was able to attend camp due to the generosity of a relative. She knows that even just one week at camp can transform a life. “Self-confidence doesn’t just happen. It has to be reinforced and encouraged.” That is what happens at Girl Scout camp. What starts as undoable becomes unstoppable. A cabin of girls begin as strangers, leave as life-long friends. “At camp, nothing is stopping girls from being who they truly are,” said Mimi. In 2014, 155 Girl Scouts wanted to experience Girl Scout camp; however, they did not have the means to attend. Thanks to generous supporters, like Mimi, those Girl Scouts were gifted the camp experience. Mimi believes girls should have the opportunity to “come home from camp feeling better about themselves, the world around them and understand that there are so many opportunities ahead of them.”

The 2014 Gold Award earners provided over 8,000 hours of community service resulting in an estimated $190,000 worth of service to their communities. (1 hour of community service is valued at $24.91 in PA www.independentsector.org, 2013). The Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting for girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through remarkable take action projects that have sustainable impact in their communities and beyond. Girls on average spend one to two years on their projects. A Girl Scout who has earned her Gold Award immediately rises one rank in any branch of the United States Armed Forces.

aMAZE-ing Advocates It is a sad but true fact that in a year’s worth of aMAZE overnights, 100% of Girl Scouts raised their hands when asked if they knew someone who had been bullied or if they had been bullied themselves. We aim to put an end to this through our aMAZE Weekend - a unique, bi-annual program that educates and challenges girls in grades 6-8 to recognize bullying and gives them the skills to overcome this increasingly devastating issue.

No matter if it is cyber or relational bullying, every seven minutes a child is being bullied. Girl Scout Research Institute, 2012

GSHPA held two aMAZE overnights that brought together nearly 100 Girl Scouts. During aMAZE, Girl Scouts participated in a courage-building personal challenge by trekking through the adventure course, a character-building team challenge by journeying through a low ropes course, and a confidence-building challenge by creating a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to encourage others to join their cause and stop bullying. By the end of the overnight, Girl Scouts became champion advocates to help end bullying for their generation and felt empowered because they realized that they’re stronger and braver than they originally knew.

Girl Scout Mission Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.

Gold Award: A Golden Opportunity to Make a Difference It is typical for a 16-year-old with a new driver’s license in hand to get a little lost while driving, but Felicia Martin from Troop 50685 in Carbondale (Lackawanna County) saw that emergency vehicles, tourists and even residents couldn’t navigate the city due to a lack of street signs. Felicia knew the problem needed to be solved through her local government and she saw a solution, she would make it happen through her Gold Award.

Felicia was recently accepted into the University of Oklahoma to study Occupational Therapy where she will pursue a career helping veterans who sustained injuries during their service. Currently, she works with the Red Cross as a blood drive volunteer administrator and is trained to support displaced disaster victims. She is also a Cadet Lieutenant Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol - an official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force that focuses on search and rescue.

Felicia spent the next two years turning a problem into an opportunity. She connected with Mayor Justin Taylor who provided her with a large-scale map of the city and from there she took action. She divided and delegated sections of the map to volunteers who walked every street and stopped at every corner to collect data on the missing signs.

That is how a Girl Scout navigates leadership! Want to learn more about the Girl Scout Gold Award? Visit page 4.

After organizing the data, she submitted it to City Hall. Her project discovered that the city was missing over 120 street signs within 52 miles of the city. “I learned that I can make changes if I am willing to speak up and take charge,” said Felicia. Inspired and grateful for her hard work, a committee of municipal data collectors was formed to continue her project. In addition, the city of Carbondale committed to purchase the first $1,000 worth of signs.

Outreach: Friendships that Make a Difference York College students - Ashley Esposito and Colleen Page - volunteered for GSHPA’s Outreach Program at Ferguson Elementary School in York County. Throughout the program, Ashley and Colleen challenged the girls to uncover their potential and gain skills that would empower them to take the lead in school, at home, and in their future by working through GSUSA’s Journey Curriculum. “The girls appreciated that we came out every week. They would run up and hug us because they were happy to see us and excited to find out what they would be doing that day. By the end of the program, the girls had a new excitement for learning,” said Colleen. Ashley recalls one girl who was quiet and shy when she first started the program. The Girl Scout would breakdown into a fit after a long day of being picked on at school. Throughout GSHPA’s outreach program, the Girl Scout came out of her shell by telling funny stories, helping others read, and befriending girls in the program. “My hope is that the girls were able to take something away, even something small like meeting a new friend or learning how to join someone sitting alone at a lunch table,” said Ashley. Being former Girl Scouts, Colleen and Ashley knew the impact of Girl Scouting and wanted to provide girls with the same experience they had. They know that by working with GSHPA’s Outreach Program they are providing girls with a safe place to forge friendships that make a difference.

Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try To serve God and my country, To help people at all times and to live by the Girl Scout Law.

GSHPA’s 2014 Outreach Program partnered with eight organizations and served over 340 low income, York County girls (grades K-5).

Inspiring Generations for Years to Come On September 10, 2014, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Anna Maria Chávez joined our council from national headquarters in New York City to celebrate eight honorees at the Inspiring Generations Gala for their incredible community impacts. Honorees were recognized for a variety of reasons including: saving a life, bettering their communities through service, and for being an outstanding role model and volunteer for nearly two decades. While they may have been recognized for different reasons, one aspect was consistent - as Girl Scouts they inspired those around them. The Gala concluded by recognizing six inspiring donors from GSHPA’s Juliette Gordon Low Society for their generous planned giving contributions. Their planned gifts will enable our organization to provide Girl Scouting to future generations and ensure girls will continue to have endless opportunities.

Betsy Keefer is just one member of the Juliette Gordon Low Society who has been impacted by the Girl Scouts. “As a girl in the Girl Scouts, I discovered things that I could do and be successful at. To some extent that has continued as an adult. I had a very meaningful career with my fair share of successes,” said Betsy who has a long list of professional accomplishments including leadership positions within the Girl Scout movement. “I support Girl Scouts because I have seen what the organization can do. I wanted to provide ongoing support to an organization that I care very much about,” she said. “I wanted to do my part, my little bit, to help Girl Scouts continue to grow, evolve and help develop girls of courage, confidence and character.”

Country Meadows Retirement Communities, the Presenting Sponsor for the 2014 Inspiring Generations Gala, was excited to have 10 residents and 3 staff members with rich Girl Scouting histories in attendance.
