MEDIA RATIONALE Gurdeep Sheri 13.1

After generating some ideas about my future documentary, I came up with three proposals. The first looks at what students will do after school/college finishes for them next year besides university due to the tuition fees rise. This will look into other things like apprenticeship and volunteer work and finding a job. The next proposal is in regards to the changes happening in Stratford City. It will look into the extent of the huge project, and get the people’s opinions including locals, to MP’s. It has been in my focus group that there are two sides to Stratford which I will also look into. The last idea looks into the lack of Asian involvement in football. I will try to identify why football is so unpopular with Asian people, and check the Asian talent at the moment. I have chosen the first idea looking into what students will do next year once school/college ends for them. I feel it is very relevant topic at the moment and can be executed quite effectively. I feel the Stratford City proposal will still be effective but will be harder to try and produce. At the moment, accessibility may be extremely hard to obtain in exclusive areas such as the Olympic site and Stratford Westfield due to high terror alerts at the moment. I have looked into getting permission and it seems there is quite a long process. I also feel, I have a lack of knowledge in the topic and if I was a resident of Stratford, I would have definitely chosen the idea as I would have had the relevant first-hand experience. It’s going to be hard also to get relevant contacts as I do not really know anyone who lives in Stratford, which will probably show in my documentary. These are the main reasons why I feel I should not take this idea any further. The proposal regarding lack of Asian involvement is a very interesting topic that has not really been looked into before. I believe I am not the right person to look into this as I am not generally into football and feel that an Asian football fan would be much better at executing this as they have the appropriate knowledge. I have found that the target market will be very specific only focusing on mainly Asian males and other football fans. During my focus group, I that the idea did not appeal to the females of the group which reflects this point. My last reason for rejecting the idea is that it is going to be difficult to get professional contacts due to the nature of football being a international sport meaning someone will have to travel to obtain the big interview that will significantly enhance my documentary. I feel my selected proposal of life after school, had some reasons to reject the idea such as being too wide as a topic consequently having too much information to put in a 5 minute documentary. After my secondary research, I found that it could be effective having more than one angle hence featuring the different options after school but it had to be a brief insight in each angle. I feel this will be effective. I also discovered a few similar clips that featured volunteer work and apprenticeships singularly, but feel combined it will be much more appealing for the audience. In terms of content viability, this is an idea that I can definitely in vision and can comfortably execute. My target audience match my brief of 16-25 year olds. I have noticed though during my focus group, if the documentary is not produced in an entertaining way, the audience will easily get turned off the documentary. I therefore have to successfully meet the BBC remit to entertain, inform and educate the audience. I feel if I stick to this remit, it will easily appeal to the target audience. I will do
