Message from the CEO What could possibly make moving back to my home state of South Carolina even better? For me, the answer was simple: preparing the girls of Eastern South Carolina for a lifetime of leadership and supporting the volunteers who deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Over the course of the past year, I have had the privilege of meeting many of our volunteers and seeing our amazing go-getter girls in action innovating, taking risks, and leading to make the world a better place. As I witnessed the unwavering commitment and dedication of our volunteers, it became clear that the awe-inspiring way our girls were stepping up to take the lead wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers who sacrifice so much time, talent, and treasure to make HER world a better place. In our Council, we have more than 600 powerhouse leaders, co-leaders, and Service Unit team members who act as the hands and feet of our movement to over 5,000 girls across our Council’s jurisdiction. One of the initiative’s I am the proudest of in 2019 is our Council’s “Lead on Us” program. As an entire Council, we feel strongly that these incredible individuals who make Girl Scouting possible shouldn’t have to pay to volunteer. “Lead on Us” not only pays for membership fees, but also for the background checks for more than 600 volunteers. It is my sincerest hope, that in this initiative, all our volunteers are shown in a very tangible way just how much we value their invaluable service to girls. You may have heard us say the phrase, “If we want more leaders, we need more Girl Scouts.” I’m extremely proud to report that we saw a membership increase in 2019, directly increasing the leadership pipeline of South Carolina’s future female leaders with each and every G.I.R.L. added to our ranks. Speaking of increases, by making the switch to Cookies-in-Hand, we saw an increase in Girl Scout Cookie sales by 22 percent. What does that increase in sales mean for girls? It means the girls in our Council will have more incredible experiences, powered by the Girl Scout Cookie Program. There is quite a lot to be proud of as a member or supporter of Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina when we look back at 2019: supporting volunteers, giving girls more opportunities to lead, and growing our Girl Scout Sisterhood right here in South Carolina. As you browse through this Annual Report, I can’t wait for you to see the girl and volunteer highlights on nearly every page, because it really is true: if we want more leaders, we need more Girl Scouts. Sincerely, Diane Flanagan Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina
