Message From The CEO Girl Scouts has been and continues to be the nation’s premier leadership organization for girls. We work on a broader scale and our girls navigate a more complex world than ever before, but as much as some things evolve others remain the same. Each Girl Scout continues to benefit from connecting with her peers and mentors in an environment where she can build the confidence and skills she needs to become a leader. We are proud of the impact we have made so far, but the astounding potential in our girls inspires us to aim even higher.

We envision a world where girls and women are represented equally as leaders of our communities, our businesses, and our nation. With your help we will see that vision become a reality.

We will expand our reach while providing even more extraordinary opportunities to each girl who makes the Girl Scout Promise. Our founder, Juliette Gordon Low worked hard to ensure that girls received the same opportunities as boys to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Even in today’s fastpaced world, all of us who follow in her footsteps will replicate her work to ensure that what she started will continue to strengthen and flourish. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Thank each of you for your investment in the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina.

Diane Flanagan, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern SC

BreAunna was one of 36 finalists in the National Cookie Pro 2018 Contest. BreAunna encourages all girls to participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, because she truly believes it will help them like it has her— both today and in the future. By selling cookies, she’s become more outgoing and more creatively inspired, while also learning all about relationship building, problem solving, and financial literacy.

National Gold Award Girl Scout – Nikole Rivers Nikole (pictured below, left) at the 2017-2018 Older Girl Recognitions Ceremony - Gold Award

Nikole (pictured above, right) in New York for International Day of The Girl 2018. She was one of ten National Gold Award Girl Scouts honored by GSUSA.

National Gold Award Girl Scout Nikole Rivers For her Gold Award project, Nikole Rivers from Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, gave a voice to local veterans and worked to bring her community together through shared history. To capture and preserve their untold stories, she interviewed 29 Dorchester County veterans from different ethnic backgrounds, representing multiple wars and conflicts. The result: a four-hour documentary film, Our Veteran Stories: FOREVER Live Our Dorchester County Heroes. These brave men and women shared stories of courage and sacrifice, and an understanding of the mental health issues facing so many veterans today. The documentary is now on permanent display at the Archives and History Center in St. George, and in the library at the South Carolina Museum in Columbia, South Carolina, so that these communities can access them and learn from them for many years to come. “Throughout the interview process and partnership in the community, I began to see the racial gap close. No one focused on the race of the person; they only listened to the stories of men and women whose bravery was not appreciated as we moved through our daily lives,” Nikole said. Selected as a State of South Carolina Distinguished Finalist for the Prudential Spirit Community Awards and featured on the local news, Nikole’s project continues to expand its positive impact, helping future generations to know their local history and the veterans who have sacrificed so much to shape it, while also bridging the racial divide in her community. Nikole is the council’s first National Gold Award Girl Scout. Read more of her story on our website at www.girlscoutsesc.org - search word Nikole.

Gold Award Spotlight Chayna Rivers – “Old But Not Forgotten”

Her project addressed elderly depression and the lack of activities for the elderly in nursing homes. She created a “Senior Prom” at Heartland Manor Care. She did a pre and post survey with each of the participants to show the comparison levels of depression and reflected that after the prom, levels of depression decreased amongst the elderly in that nursing home. Her project will continue each year through the Activities Director and the staff at the facility.

Samantha “Taylor” Pierce – “Dare to Dream”

Her project created a way for troubled boys at Tara Hall to communicate and learn to build a positive way to communicate by building a low-ropes challenge course. The boys that live in this home can utilize this challenge course to work through feelings and emotions that allow them to be able to communicate in a positive reinforced way verses a negative reinforced way, like physical confrontations. This challenge course helped these boys with problem-solving, decision making, set expectations, and develop the communication skills that they can utilize through everyday life. Her project will be sustained through Tara Hall, where they will utilize this program with the boys that reside at this facility.
