Sandy Ridge, owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, is our resident camp located in Marlboro County, near Bennettsville, SC. The camp is on 500 acres of beautiful sand hills. With a capacity of over 100 girls per week, Sandy Ridge is the perfect place to spend some of your summer break. Facilities include a swimming pool, two lakes, watercraft, an archery range, sports field, a clay pit, and an air conditioned dining hall. Three of our living units are air conditioned by window units and our fourth living unit is cooled by ceiling fans. Sandy Ridge is highly accredited by the American Camp Association. Accreditation means Sandy Ridge has undergone a thorough review of more than 250 standards, evaluating everything from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. Sandy Ridge offers camp experiences for all girls’ ages 6 through 17. Camps are listed in the camp guide according to the week a specific program is offered. Please note that camp registration is based on a girl’s age, not their grade level. We recommend finding the week or weeks your girl can attend camp and reading through the available programs with her, and then registering early. Many programs will fill up quickly. Please remember you do not have to be a current Girl Scout to register for camp at Sandy Ridge. There is an additional $30 registration fee for girls who are not current Girl Scouts and it pays for their Girl Scout registration through September 30, 2018. Many of our campers’ only Girl Scout experience is at Sandy Ridge each summer, and they are not involved in a Troop for the remaining months of their membership.

Is Your Camper Ready For Camp?

This is a question many parents struggle with when sending their girl to camp. Some things to consider are:

How long can you manage without your child? What is the longest length of time she has been away from home? How does she deal with being away from home? Do you usually have to go and pick her up early when she is away from home? Does she think she can stay at camp for a week? After considering these questions, talk with your girl and decide if it is the right time for her. If you need more information, a checklist and articles can be found at the American Camp Association website, www.acacamps.org.

Camp Living Campers stay in a shared environment. All campers are expected to participate daily in camp kapers, such as making their beds and maintaining their living spaces. Each camper is responsible for her own personal care and grooming. This provides an excellent opportunity for girls to develop democratic living skills and a greater sense of self-reliance and responsibility. A typical day includes games, songs, program specific activities, and other activities the girls plan throughout the week. Campers will sleep in a living unit. Counselors will be available at all times, in a centrally located area. Bathrooms are centrally located within the living unit. It is recommended that parents and campers read the Camper Handbook, which comes in your confirmation packet, together for more information.

Bullying Camp life is an excellent opportunity for girls to live and work together. One behavior that will not be tolerated is bullying. Bullying can be categorized into

four broad categories - physical, verbal, indirect, and virtual. Physical bullying includes kicking, hitting, spitting, tripping, pinching, pushing, taking and/or damaging property or belongings. Verbal bullying includes threats, teasing, taunting, name-calling, intimidation, offensive or derogatory remarks. Indirect bullying includes gossiping, spreading negative rumors or stories about someone, lying, and excluding people from social groups. Virtual (or cyber) bullying includes sending negative or threatening messages, texts, or pictures via email, instant messages, chat rooms, or websites. GSESC reserves the right to send any person home who willfully bullies, disobeys camp rules, or whose behavior towards others is unacceptable.

Staff The camp staff is a main factor in providing a happy and rewarding experience for your camper. The staff selection process includes a background check, extensive screening, and an interview with each staff member. Staff members are selected based on

experience, maturity, judgment, and a desire to share enthusiasm and skills with children. All staff members participate in an intensive onsite training program prior to camp and ongoing evaluations throughout the summer. The Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director are highly trained and are specialized in their fields. They have spent all year preparing for the resident camp season. All staff members are dedicated to making resident camp a positive, wonderful, and memorable experience for your camper.

medications are kept in a locked cabinet in the health center and are dispensed by the health supervisor. Accommodations can be made for girls with special needs. Three well balanced meals are served each day in the Dining Hall. The Camp Director will work with parents to accommodate special dietary needs when given advance notice. We ask that specialty food items be provided by the families. These items will be stored in the kitchen. Contact Chuck Iler at customercare@ girlscoutsesc.org or 843-479-6814 to discuss any needed accommodations.

Health and Safety Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina does not require campers attending summer resident camp to have a physical examination. We do require a Health History Form (completed by parent/guardian) and a current immunization record (or immunization waiver). The Health History Form is included in your camper’s confirmation packet. If your camper does not have a completed Health History Form and immunization record (or immunization waiver) at Check-In, she will not be able to stay at camp until they are turned in. Please bring the Health History Form with you to Check-In. Do not mail this form to any of the Girl Scout offices or to Sandy Ridge. The staff members who work with your camper are trained in basic first aid and CPR. A health supervisor is on hand to care for campers with more severe illnesses or injuries. There is also a physician on call for the entire camp season. If your camper becomes ill while at camp, you will be notified in order to determine a course of action. All

When they earn the pin, invite girls to share their accomplishments in each of the 5 Skills. Here’s how girls achieve the 5 Skills through the Girl Scout Cookie Program:

The Cookie Activity Pin is available in August for purchase at your local store or through www.girlscoutshop.com. The pin is a different color every year.

1. Goal Setting Ƀ Set personal learning goals. What do you want to learn this year? What do you want to do better? Share this with at least one other person or your group.

Ƀ

Set personal sales goals for yourself based on your personal and group goals. Keep a record of your accomplishments each year!

2. Decision Making Ƀ Develop a basic business plan for your cookie sale. Ƀ Work as a team with other Girl Scouts to decide when and where you’ll sell cookies and what you’ll do with the money you earn.

3. Money Management Ƀ Develop a budget for accomplishing at least one of the goals you set in the Goal Setting step. Use this budget to help determine your sales goals.

Ƀ

Be able to explain how the money earned in the Girl Scout Cookie Program helps you, your group, and your council.

4. People Skills Ƀ Practice your “elevator speech” for customers about what you are selling, why you are selling it, and why they should purchase it.

Ƀ

Make a list of customers you will approach. Don’t forget people you sold to last year!

5. Business Ethics Ƀ Discuss how living the Girl Scout Promise and Law applies to what you do in the Girl Scout Cookie Program as a businesswoman.

S’more Campfire Cupcakes Ready in 75 min

Makes 24 cupcakes

What you need:

Directions:

Ingredients

1. Make cupcakes Place paper baking cup in each of 24 regular-size muffin cups. In a bowl stir together graham cracker crumbs, sugar and salt. Pour melted butter over and mix with a fork until incorporated. Press 1 tablespoon of graham mixture into the bottom of each liner. Fill muffin cups halfway with batter and put full marshmallow in the center of each. Bake as cake recipe instructs. Cupcakes will have a crater in the center when baked. Insert another whole marshmallow into the crater and bake for an additional 2 min. until melted. You will still have a dip in the top of cupcake, but no worries. Use a spoon to get them out of the pan and cool on cooling rack.

Cupcake: Devil’s Food cake batter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 lb. (16 oz.) of regular marshmallows 1 1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs 1/4 cup sugar 1/8 teaspoon of salt 4 tablespoons butter, melted Buttercream Frosting: 4 cups of powdered sugar 1 cup of softened butter 2 teaspoons of vanilla 1-2 tablespoons of milk Decorations: 20 red cinnamon hard candies 20 yellow butterscotch hard candies 60 pretzel sticks, broken in half 48 miniature marshmallows 24 toothpicks 12 Girl Scout S’mores™ cookies (split open)

2. Make the fire Next, place unwrapped red and gold hard candies in a freezer plastic bag. Crush candies with hammer into chunks. Spread crushed candies in a thin layer onto parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake at 350°F 6 to 8 minutes or until completely melted. Melted sugar can cause severe burns, so adult needs to remove from oven and candy must be completely cool before any handling. 3. Make the frosting and decorate To make frosting, mix the powdered sugar and softened butter until combined. Add vanilla and milk. Beat on low until powdered sugar is incorporated, then increase speed to medium-high. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When completely mixed the frosting may appear dry. Add more milk, a little bit at a time, until frosting is the proper consistency. Frost cupcakes using a pastry bag with a decorative tip. On each cupcake, arrange 4-5 pretzel pieces to create a campfire. Break cooled sheets of melted candies into pointed shards. Insert candy pieces around pretzels to create flames. Place two marshmallows on the end of a toothpick, insert the other end into the cupcake. Place one side of cookie on top.
