WINTER 2015 EDITION

Athletic News The Booster Club was formed in the spring of 2003 to support GSB athletics both financially and by encouraging school spirit. For more information about the Booster Club, contact David Pasquale, athletic director, at 908-234-1611, ext. 221.

A NOTE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Many of us who follow interscholastic athletics become consumed by “March Madness” every spring as 132 men’s and women’s basketball teams compete for their respective national championships in a singleelimination tournament that culminates every year in early April. Both tournaments provide exhilarating drama each and every year and this year’s versions did not disappoint. Through all of the busted brackets and shining moments, it was a quotation from Kentucky men’s coach John Calipari that resonated with me as I reflected on our own successful winter season at Gill St. Bernard’s School. Calipari is a polarizing figure in the coaching profession and his methods are widely discussed and often disparaged. However, his words after his team’s Sweet Sixteen dismantling of West Virginia were profound: “I don’t want my team playing angry. I don’t want them to be mean, nasty, hateful. It’s not us against the world. It is play with joy and love of the game and love of each other. That wins every time.” These words reminded me of what I hope many GSB student-athletes glean from our athletics program. We’re incredibly proud of our school records and championship performances, but it’s the “love of the game and love of each other” that can make it such a transcendent experience. Congratulations to all of our winter athletes and thanks very much to all of you who represented each other and our school so well. Best of luck to the spring athletes, who will provide us with much pride and joy as we wind down another academic year. FOR YOUR INFORMATION Please note the following abbreviations used throughout this newsletter: NJISAA – New Jersey Independent School Athletic Association, divided into “Prep A” and “Prep B” NJSIAA – New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, in which GSB competes in the Non-Public B Division SCT – Somerset County Tournament

Varsity Boys’ Basketball Claims Division and County Crowns This past winter, the varsity boys’ basketball team earned a share of the Skyland Conference Delaware Division crown as well as its third Somerset County Championship in the last five years. The boys began the season with three straight wins over Immaculata, Teaneck and Franklin and continued to shine all the way to the Somerset County Tournament, competing against one of the most challenging schedules in the state. Shortly after securing a share of the Skyland Conference Delaware Division Championship with a 64-45 victory over Bridgewater-Raritan on February 14, the third-seeded GSB boys defeated the Panthers (72-54) again in the quarterfinal round of the SCT. Tyus Battle ’16 led the way with 25 points, followed by John Michael Mea ’15 with 19. Jonas Stakeliunas ’15 and Julius Stoma ’16 also chipped in with six points apiece to help the boys to the SCT semifinals at Montgomery on February 23. Michael Morreale ’17 paced the Knights with 13 points, while Adam Mitola ’16 and Ian Demarest ’15 added six points each to defeat Rutgers Prep 58-34 and advance to the championship game against a top-seeded Ridge. Down by eight in the first quarter, Gill used a 10-0 run to take the lead and never looked back. Solid defense from the Knights, coupled with strong shooting by Mea (14 points), Stoma (11), Mitola (eight) and Morreale (six), led the boys to the 48-39 victory and 2015 Somerset County crown.

Jonas Stakeliunas ’15.

GSB wrapped up its season (16-10) with a heartbreaking 67-66 loss to Holy Spirit on March 4 in the Non-Public B South Sectional Tournament. Though the boys’ basketball team will graduate six seniors—Matthew Del Priore, Harrison DeMaira, Demarest, Mea, William Saks and Stakeliunas—it will look toward younger players such as Dallas Hoffman ’18, Alex Imegwu ’18, Connor Klementowicz ’16, Alexander Schachne ’18, Tyler Starr ’17 and Evan Storch ’17 to uphold the success of the program.

JV Boys’ Basketball Program has Season for the Ages The JV boys’ basketball team had a fantastic 16-1 season filled with impressive wins over Immaculata, Franklin, Ridge and Rutgers Prep. Tri-Captains Andrew Noll ’16, Tyler Starr ’17 and Evan Storch ’17 led the way for this young group of athletes, which included 10 freshmen and three upperclassmen. Both Storch and Ryan Morash ’18 paced the Knights on defense, often putting a stop to the top opposing player, while point guard Timothy Chaney ’18 joined Daniel Wang ’18 in assisting lead scorers Dallas Hoffman ’18, Alex Imegwu ’18 and Jordan Davidson ’18 on offense. Christopher “CJ” Licata ’18 and Scott Begane ’18 also showcased offensive and defensive versatility. GSB’s 2014-15 season concluded in late February with a freshman tournament at Immaculata High School, where both Ronald “Joe” Johnson ’18 and Isaiah Lipkin ’18 helped the boys advance to the final round against Ridge. The team’s all-around success bodes well for the future of the boys’ basketball program. Evan Storch ’17.

Boys’ ‘A’ Basketball Team Records Undefeated Season The 2014-15 Middle School boys’ ‘A’ basketball team earned an undefeated 13-0 season including significant wins over Ranney and Rutgers Prep. Jake Betlow ’19 tallied an average 25 points per game for the Knights, while Paul Mulcahy ’19 led the way in both assists and rebounds. In addition, Seth Gelwarg ’19 averaged more than two steals a game and Matthew “Max” Alexy ’19, Brian Mueller ’19, Parker DeMaira ’20 and Michael Taylor ’20 served as the perfect role models for swing players William Goldmark ’19, Drew Kramer ’20, Brandon McCall Sulton ’20, Jack Petraitis ’20, Nicholas Policano ’20, Zachary Rieger ’20 and John “AJ” Witte ’19. The latter two improved tremendously over the course of the season, as each transitioned from the ‘B’ to the ‘A’ team after only three or four games. With hard work and extra effort expected from all throughout the off-season, the boys’ basketball program will reach even greater heights next year.

Varsity Swimming Raises the Bar During Record Season GSB’s varsity swim program had an outstanding season complete with program-best performances at the Skyland Conference Championship as well as fine showings in the Somerset County and Prep B Swimming championships. The postseason began on January 17 at Montgomery High School, where several GSB swimmers posted personal bests while competing against other Skyland Conference opponents. Michael Urowsky ’16 swam his best time ever in the 50y freestyle and Carter Silvey ’16 did the same in the 100y freestyle while taking first place in his heat. For the girls, Gabrielle Breuer ’17 beat her fastest time by over seven seconds for first in her 100y backstroke heat. Emily Supron ’17, Sophie Connell ’16 and Jenna Steele ’15 all notched career-best efforts in the 50y freestyle. Gill St. Bernard’s entered the Somerset County Swim Championship in high spirits, after clinching a 78-72 regular season win over Jonathan Dayton High School on January 22. Jennifer Montejo ’16 conquered the 100y butterfly, while Benjamin Hiramoto ’16, Urowsky, Supron, Alan Chen ’18 and Steele added valuable points in the 50y freestyle to seal the dual meet win. Joseph “Julien” Esposito ’15 finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47) and sixth in the 500y freestyle (4:50) to lead the boys to 11th place overall in the county swim championship on January 31. Silvey took first in his 50y freestyle heat, and Urowsky, Leo He ’17 and Chen swam personal bests in the same event. The girls finished 13th overall behind the 200y freestyle relay squad of Connell, Montejo, Sabrina Sukhin ’18 and Supron, which dropped seven seconds off its personal best time.

While Nita Diverio ’15 (50y freestyle), Giselle Garcia ’18 (200y backstroke) and Carolyn Brand ’17 (100y backstroke) posted season-best times in their respective events, Breuer and Elisabeth Middleton ’16 joined Montejo and Sukhin for a fine performance in the 200y medley relay. The season continued on February 3, as Esposito took second in the 200y freestyle (1:47) and third in the 500y freestyle (4:48) at the Prep B Championships in Lawrenceville, N.J. Esposito also finished seventh in his heat (500y freestyle) during the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on March 1. He advanced to the state final after securing a 4:44 finish in the 500y freestyle on February 28. Though the swim team raised the bar in the pool this year, it will look to improve even further in the 2015-16 season.

GSB captured a 62-42 victory on January 22 against North Hunterdon. Samantha Kramer ’16 led the way with a game-high 19 points and Lauren McBride ’16 scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win. Though the girls fell to Rutgers Prep on January 29, they quickly recovered with a 73-54 victory over Phillipsburg on January 31, rallying for a 24-9 fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Both Alexia Allesch ’17 (19 points/14 rebounds) and McBride (20 points/12 rebounds) posted double-doubles, while Kramer scored 19 points and dished out eight assists in the triumph. Gill went on another sixgame winning streak in early February, with both Katherine Howard ’17 and Nyla Mulcahy ’17 contributing along the way.

The number-four seed in this year’s Somerset County Tournament, Gill St. Bernard’s jumped out to a 58-46 win over Ridge in the quarterfinals on February 19. Kramer scored a game-high 17 points, followed by Allesch and Morgan Rooks ’15 with 11 points apiece. Despite an impressive early-season victory (50-43) over Franklin on December 23, the Knights fell 74-57 to the top-seeded Warriors in the SCT semifinals on February 21. GSB swiftly rebounded with back-to-back wins over Bridgewater-Raritan and Somerville to wrap up the regular season. Allesch scored 17 points, and Kramer had 15, as the Knights went on a 20-7 fourth quarter run to defeat Skyland Conference rival, Bridgewater-Raritan, on February 23. Rooks paced the girls with 18 points and six rebounds in the 77-40 rout of Somerville on February 25. The trio of Emma Dean ’17, Gallic and Kennedy Whitehead ’16 combined for 15 points and 10 rebounds as well in the contest. On March 4, the girls closed the season with a loss to Rutgers Prep in the NJSIAA Non-Public B State Tournament. With such young talent, including freshmen Claire Chestnutt, Nour Marzouk and Josephine “JJ” Neville, returning to the roster next year, the girls have much to be excited about.

Varsity Fencing Finishes Winter on a High Note GSB’s varsity fencing teams competed in both the Cetrulo and Santelli Tournaments in early January and concluded the season in high spirits with several fine victories at regular season matches. The boys triumphed 17-10 over The Lawrenceville School on February 6, behind sabre fencers Landon Braemer ’17, Luke Solondz ’17 and Samuel Solondz ’15, and epeeists Luke Fischer ’16, Lachlan Wright ’17, Nicholas Bhimani ’18 and Patrick Reilly ’17. Each squad finished 6-3, while foilists Ross Pollack ’16, Samuel Zimmer ’16 and Jack Riccardo ’17 earned a 5-4 win to defeat the Big Red. That same weekend, GSB headed to the Freshman/Sophomore Tournament at Montclair High School, where both Danae Aslidis ’18 (girls’ epee) and Braemer (boys’ sabre) took third in their respective weapons for the Knights. To keep the momentum going, GSB’s teams swept West Windsor-Plainsboro South (WWPS) on February 10. The boys saw successful performances across all three weapons in the 16-11 victory, as Stefan Lambert ’15 (3-0), Pollack, Riccardo and Zimmer owned the foil, Bhimani, Fischer (3-0), Reilly and Wright won at epee, and Braemer joined the Danae Aslidis ’18. Varsity Ice Hockey Program Continues to Improve The 2014-15 GSB ice hockey team celebrated its third year of varsity competition with four wins and two ties this winter. Ryan Turse ’18 (two goals/one assist), Nathan Crystal ’17 (one goal) and Tyler Schrecengost ’18 (one goal) lit it up on December 15 to defeat Morris Hills 4-1. Down 3-0 in the third period on December 20, Devin Hohman ’17 (one assist), Schrecengost and Turse (one assist) rallied for three goals to knot the score against Newton. Lake Jacobson ’17 and Jennifer Lowe ’17 also chipped in with assists, while goalie Gunnar Valentine ’15 posted 42 saves in the cage.

Devin Hohman ’17.

Valentine eclipsed the 1,000-career save mark on January 8, as he made 18 stops in Gill’s 2-1 victory over Morris Hills. Hohman led the way on offense with two goals, and Turse had an assist, to give GSB its second regular season win against the Scarlet Knights. The team stormed back from a 3-1 deficit to earn a 3-3 tie with Newark East Side at the Prudential Center on January 30. Both Turse (two) and Crystal (one) found the back of the net, Alyx Schrecengost ’15 added two assists and Valentine made 25 saves.

Hohman earned his first-ever hat trick on February 4 to lead the Ice Knights to a 5-3 win over Dayton Regional. T. Schrecengost (two assists) and Turse (one assist) contributed one goal apiece to defeat the Bulldogs. GSB wrapped up the season with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newark East Side on February 11. T. Schrecengost sailed the puck past the opposing goalie with less than three seconds remaining to take the win. The team also saw two goals and one assist from Turse on offense, while A. Schrecengost, Christian St. Germaine ’17, Graham Valentine ’17 and Nathaniel Bess ’17 provided staunch defense in front of goaltender Gunnar Valentine (16 saves). Other contributing members throughout the season included seniors John “Jack” Lowe and Ethan Brooks, juniors Ryan Chestnutt, Gavin Ferruggia, George Harris, Patrick Janas, Nicolas Ricciardi and Nicholas Ross, sophomores Isaac Ling, Jacob Udoff and Grayson Valentine, and freshman Bobby D’Angelo.

Spring Coaching Updates Made The GSB Athletics Department appointed two new head coaches, and promoted two members of the Upper School coaching staff, for the spring 2015 season. The varsity golf program will be led by Upper School history teacher Mike Cascini—a valuable assistant coach for the past two seasons—as well as former Gettysburg College assistant golf coach Chris Nevolo. Cascini is a former high school and college golfer with considerable experience in private instruction, course management and sports psychology. Meanwhile, Nevolo brings to Gill St. Bernard’s School a wide understanding of player development, strength and conditioning, and practice organization. Already a familiar face among GSB boys’ lacrosse, Brian Callanan P ’21 has been selected to lead the program (grades 5-12) through its next important stages of development. Callanan has worked diligently with Gill’s Middle and Upper School boys’ lacrosse program for the past two seasons, imparting vast knowledge and experience acquired at several schools throughout the country.

Co-Head Varsity Golf Coach Mike Cascini.

After an extensive search, GSB has chosen Hi-Hills’ Assistant Director of Summer and Auxiliary Programs Nicole Spiotta as its head varsity softball coach. Spiotta holds an impressive softball background as a coach and player. Since graduating from Drew University, where she was a two-time team captain and all-conference player, Spiotta has made a positive impact as a head coach both at the collegiate and club levels over the past four years. Best of luck to all in the season ahead! 8
