DUBAI

WHERE SEA MEETS SKY

Dubai is the city that never rests, and this ceaseless energy has given rise to great events that year after year have found their places on the world stage, like Dubai International Boat Show, the region’s largest marine lifestyle exhibition, which for the past 30 years has brought an impressive lineup of yachts and superyachts to Dubai, along with leading shipbuilders. Further proof that this incredible city is increasingly becoming established as an unmissable destination for anyone who loves the sea, with all its distinctive modern elegance and exclusivity. Within the event - for which our Dubai Italia Experiences magazine is a media partner - Italy continues to be a pioneer in style, craftsmanship and technology. Italy also takes a leading part in Art Dubai, thanks to the contribution of Benedetta Ghione, Executive Director of the fair, who tells us more in this issue. It’s a short step from art to music - and dance - with our cover story, that of Eleonora Abbagnato, the frst Italian ballerina to become the étoile at the Opéra National de Paris, who will be at Dubai Opera in May with the ballet Serata Preljocaj. No other dancer can better embody the happy combination of dance and fashion that only reaches such heights in Italy. A bit like Dubai and contemporary architecture, which has given us a glittering forest of a city, where we take you on a journey of discovery to the most astonishing and beautiful skyscrapers. On the rooftops of some, we also visited the top restaurants that combine fabulous food and spectacular views. Lastly, we leave Dubai but continue talking about art and architecture at the magnifcent Louvre Abu Dhabi, where we met Lorenzo Fanara, the Italian ambassador to the UAE, to discuss the close ties that link Italy and the UAE today.

A ROBUST NETWORK OF LOYAL CLIENTS AND PARTNERS, A TAILORED AND COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO OUR CLIENTS

THE SPIRIT NETWORK

What is the mission of Kelmer Group?

Our mission is to support Italian entrepreneurs in their overseas expansion projects, here in Dubai where the group has had its main operational hub since 7, as well as in other highly strategic international markets covered by our network of offces.

From your privileged vantage point, what are the added values of Italianness in the Emirati market?

On the Italian side, a transversal offering of products and services of unquestionable excellence, quality, and often with high technological and innovative value. On the Emirati side, a consistently high level of appreciation for Made in Italy products.

What is the commercial spirit of Dubai and how can an Italian company best ft into it?

Dubai has solidifed its position as a regional hub and gateway to international markets over the years thanks to its infrastructure, tax regime, and strategic location. The signifcance of this role has further grown in recent years due to a series of successful domestic policies and the customary ability to make the most of international geopolitical events, consistently reaffrming itself as a ‘safe harbor’ and a natural business accelerator.

The fagship of your counseling service?

Traditionally, Kelmer’s services focus on tax, legal, and accounting aspects. In recent years, especially in a coveted and competitive environment like the UAE’s, Internationalization services have become increasingly sought after and successful for entrepreneurs who require a structured approach to the local market. We provide highly accurate matchmaking, resulting in trade missions where the client has the opportunity to meet with their relevant counterparts, market research for specifc sectors, and more.

Your Dubai in three heart addresses.

Having lived here for over years, I am deeply connected to classic Dubai, to that ‘city of contrasts’ where those very contrasts embody its essence, richness, and denote its unique character. I have too many favorite spots that grow in tandem with the city’s continuous expansion; therefore, I’d rather select three heartfelt situations: chasing sunsets on Jumeirah beach, stargazing atop Al Qudrah desert dunes, alley-strolling in old Bastakiya.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

GIOVANNI BOZZETTI, PRESIDENT OF EFG CONSULTING AND PARTNER OF THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES’ MINISTRY OF THE ECONOMY FOR INVESTOPIA text Virginia Mammoli

What does Dubai represent for the Italian market?

@GIOVANNI.BOZZETTI

Dubai is defnitely a crucial logistic hub for all companies interested in expanding their business horizons. The United Arab Emirates’ consumers have a marked tendency to consume Made in Italy products, in both the ‘three Fs’ sectors - Fashion, Food and Furniturebut also in the automotive, mechanical components, precision industry, oil & gas supply, building materials, health, training and sustainability felds. What is Investopia, the event that will take place on February 28 and 29 in Abu Dhabi and on May 10 in Milan?

Investopia is the global investment platform launched by the United Arab Emirates’ government in and which landed in Italy in owing to the partnership with Efg Consulting, a strategic consulting frm for internationalization processes with a focus on the Middle East. This year’s event will explore the new investment trends and changes in the light of the new green and sustainable economy concept. The Milanese event is called Shaping Investments and Future Businesses and will revolve around four macro themes: Tourism and Hospitality, Sustainability, Investments in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Creative Economy.

You also collaborate with Altagamma, the Foundation that brings together some of the most prestigious Made in Italy companies. What are Atagamma’s goals in Dubai?

In March in Dubai, we inaugurated the Atalgamma Club, whose goal is to promote the excellence, lifestyle, creativity and quality of Italy across the country, by serving as a networking and sharing platform for the member companies.

What are your favorite places in Dubai?

DUBAI IS DEFINITELY A CRUCIAL LOGISTIC HUB FOR ALL COMPANIES INTERESTED IN EXPANDING THEIR BUSINESS

One of my favorite places is defnitely the desert, a magical place. In the city, I enjoy walking along the Jumeirah beach, the Canal or the Boulevard while admiring the Burj Khalifa’s grandeur, evidence of the fact that nothing is impossible.

TALA SAMMAN, ONE OF THE MIDDLE EAST’S BEST-KNOWN FASHION BLOGGERS

How did MyFashDiary start?

It all started when I was a student at London College of Fashion. It was my little personal diary, where I shared all my discoveries in the fashion world. Now it’s turned into a lifestyle platform.

Have you always loved fashion?

Yes, I’ve always been fascinated by the fashion industry. I had placements with a few fashion magazines when I was in high school, I went to fashion school and my frst job after university was for a fashion journal. I think it’s always been part of my DNA.

How much has Dubai contributed to your professional career?

I’m a proud daughter of Dubai. Seeing the city grow and evolve, and growing with it, has been truly special and exciting. Dubai is such a thrilling city to live and work in, you’re never bored, there’s always something new to see and try; it’s welcoming, alive, a concentration of life.

Three places you love in Dubai?

Be Beach, a fabulous beach club near the port, the ideal place to sunbathe and relax, with amazing food. Tori Tori, for the best contemporary Japanese food in sharing plates, and Nice Guy, for food and fun until the early hours.

Which accessories are you never without?

I adore rings and I can’t go out without them, I feel naked! I love earrings too, they can revolutionise a whole outft!

What would you recommend for a frst-time visitor to Dubai?

I WENT TO FASHION SCHOOL AND MY FIRST JOB AFTER UNIVERSITY WAS FOR A FASHION JOURNAL. I THINK IT’S ALWAYS BEEN PART OF MY DNA

People often choose Dubai as a holiday destination for the shopping in the big malls, for nightlife, restaurants and entertainment, and that’s great. However, I always recommend spending some time in Old Dubai, the neighbourhood on the banks of Dubai Creek. You should also allow a day to explore nearby Abu Dhabi, with its museums and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, also known as the Great White Mosque of Abu Dhabi, one of the most spectacular in the world.

Eleonora Abbagnato, is the first Italian dancer to become Danseuse Étoile of the Opéra National de Paris, the temple of French ballet. Now she is Ballet director at Opera in Rome, a role she has held since since 2015 (ph. James Bort)

ULTRA-DANCE

OUR CONVERSATION WITH ÉTOILE ELEONORA ABBAGNATO, DIRECTOR OF THE CORPS DE BALLET OF THE TEATRO DELL’OPERA DI ROMA, ON THE COMPANY’S DEBUT IN DUBAI text Teresa Favi

She was the frst Italian dancer to become the Étoile of the Opéra National de Paris, the temple of French ballet, and for more than a decade she has led the prestigious corps de ballet at Rome Opera House. Eleonora Abbagnato is one metre 7 of nerves, muscle, beauty and extraordinary elegance. Born in Sicily, the largest island in southern Italy, Eleonora always believed in the spark that was lit in her at the tender age of three: “I’d follow my mum around her dress shop, but instead of playing I used to spy on the girls at the dance school opposite; a few months later, I started taking my frst steps”. Her talent quickly became clear, and soon after her eleventh birthday Eleonora left Palermo for Monte Carlo and Marika Bresobrasova’s Academy, where she excelled immediately. The following year she was discovered by the acclaimed French choreographer Roland Petit, and began her ascent to stardom. In 99 , aged , she entered the prestigious École de Danse of the Opéra National de Paris. Three years later she joined the company and started climbing the ladder of ballet hierarchy: coryphée in 99, sujet in

and première danseuse in .

In she was awarded the National Order of Merit for her services to the Opéra and to France, and on 8 March , following nomination by dance director Brigitte Lefèvre, Eleanor was appointed Danseuse Étoile by Nicolas Joel, director of the Opéra National de Paris.

ELEONORA ABBAGNATO AND HER ROMAN BALLET COMPANY ARE SET TO PERFORM AT DUBAI OPERA. THEY’RE TAKING A SHOW IN HOMAGE TO ANGELIN PRELJOCAJ A GREAT FRENCH DIRECTOR AND CHOREOGRAPHER

In she received the sought-after position of director of the corps de ballet at Rome Opera, next year marking ten tears in charge, during which she has succeeded in developing the company considerably, bringing in well-known international choreographers, major productions and high-level guest dancers. All this generated acclaim from audiences, evidenced by the numerous sold-out shows in recent years, show after show. Success after success. And in May, Eleonora Abbagnato and her Rome ballet company are set to perform at Dubai Opera. Which show will you be taking to Dubai?

We’re taking a show that was dreamed up during the pandemic to give our dancers something to do. I got France involved, and we started working at Palazzo

Farnese (the magnifcent home of the French Embassy in Rome, ed.) in homage to Angelin Preljocaj the French director and choreographer of Albanian descent, who is defnitely one of the top contemporary artists. At my invitation, Preljocaj’s unmistakable choreography and direction returned to Rome with his classic female duet Annonciation ( 99 ), and a new piece, Nuit Romaine, specially written for our company. It was a huge project that also involved collaboration with Dior, who created over stage costumes designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, as well as Rome Opera House, obviously in partnership with the French Embassy in Italy.

You’ve been director of the corps de ballet at Rome Opera since 2015; what does the job mean to you?

constant daily efforts, the stimulus of working with great guest choreographers, and openness to innovation and great contemporary dance, along with our important work on the classical repertoire. It’s a competitive combination and highly valued both in Italy and abroad, taking us on tours which - like this one to Dubai - put us on the world’s most prestigious stages.

SINCE ELEONORA ABBAGNATO HAS BEEN BALLET DIRECTOR AT OPERA IN ROME, GLAMOUR AS WELL HAS ENTERED THE THEATRE. ALWAYS A MUSE FOR ITALIAN FASHION DESIGNERS, ABBAGNATO HAD REALLY FRIENDLY RELATIONS WITH BIG NAMES IN FASHION

These days we’re like a family, but that doesn’t mean I’m not immensely proud of this prestigious role, and I’ve always taken on its challenges and responsibilities with enthusiasm and determination.

What are the company’s strengths, and what are its distinctive features?

It’s a company that’s growing every year, thanks to

What’s your favourite thing to teach students?

From my dancers I demand hard work, passion and commitment, but what really interests me is their ability to express emotions through dance. With the corps de ballet I also like to transmit something that’s more of a desire than a lesson: how to always surprise audiences and arouse emotions that touch the heart of everyone who comes to see us.

What has been the greatest challenge of your career?

Getting to the home of world dance as the only Italian to take the diffcult but important route to enter the corps de ballet of the Paris Opera, an almost impossible goal which I managed with support from Claude Bessy, my teacher during my three years at the École. For me, dance has always come frst, and this

enormous passion gave me the strength to achieve even my most ambitious dreams, like being the frst Italian étoile in the Paris Opera.

Is there an encounter that changed your life?

Yes, with the great dance teacher Pina Bausch; it happened at the most wonderful time in my career, when I was just 8. It was during a casting for The Rite of Spring in Paris.

Pina Bausch changed the way dance is done, the approach to our bodies, beauty, femininity, everything, even ordinary life for dancers, and made it possible to express all this in our work.

You’re keen on fashion and always elegantly dressed; what does style mean to you?

I love fashion and follow it closely. My father worked in the fashion industry, with Renzo Rosso (the founder of Diesel), who’s a family friend and my godfather. So from a very young age I got used to feeling confdent in beautiful clothes.

ABBAGNATO HAS BROUGHT TO ROME MUCH THAT HAS COME FROM HER EXPERIENCE IN PARIS: BALLETS, DANCERS, CHOREOGRAPHERS, TEACHERS. SHE HAS ALSO BROUGHT AN INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

made for me, I particularly remember the one I wore to dance at Sanremo Festival - to Valentino, who designed the costumes for my performance at the 9 Vienna New Year’s Concert; Laura Biagiotti , who created the costumes for the Baroque Suite ballet; Fendi, and Karl Lagerfeld, who once chose me for a photo shoot at his New York studio; and Dior, whose Maria Grazia Chiuri created over costumes for the Rome Opera show we’re taking to Dubai. These are real, authentic relationships which I carry in my heart and have occasionally brought to the stage in a long-established ballet tradition: think of the artistic partnership between Roland Petit and Yves Saint Laurent.

What do you value most about made in Italy fashion?

Dance and fashion have often intersected in your career…

I’ve always had really friendly relations with big names in fashion, from Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana - among the many dresses they’ve

It’s one of our strengths. The excellence of Italian fashion distinguishes us in the world. In itself it’s a form of culture. This year we’ve done something similar with our wonderful Italian choreographers, creating a Young Choreographers’ Evening to showcase Italian excellence in contemporary choreography. I already have everything I wanted.

Iconic, exotic, luxurious. It appears to fan out over the sea, offering breathtaking views of the Arabian Gulf and the city’s waterfronts. Palm Jumeirah, seemingly emerging from nothing, rising from the sea, and discernible from space, undoubtedly stands as one of the most audacious engineering marvels of the twenty-frst century.

The man-made island was created from tons of rock from the Hajar Mountains and sand from the emirate desert and the Arabian Sea. Such an immense amount of rock and sand were utilized in constructing the -meter-wide wall that could encircle the globe three times! Then, a crescent-shaped breakwater protects the inner island from the seasonal ‘shamal’ winds blowing across the Gulf from Iraq and the strong sea currents.

Trunk, spine, fronds, and crescent, these are the names by which the sectors of the archipelago resembling a palm tree are known. Today, the fronds are home to around , beachfront mansions, with a further , apartments on the trunk. In the splendid setting of this area, rows of palm trees illuminated at night and beachside venues bring Miami vibes and an exotic atmosphere to West Palm Beach, creating one of the most beautiful promenades in Dubai. Adding to the allure is Koko Bay, a bo-

ho-chic oasis perfect for relaxation during the aperitif hour, where to enjoy the marina view and the setting sun directly over the sea.

Accessing the area is made convenient by the elevated monorail connecting the Palm to the mainland. On this journey, visitors not only reach their destination seamlessly but also take in the panoramic sights of the Palm, extending to the iconic Burj Al Arab, and surrounded by the Arabian Gulf.

However, when faced with the choice of the most awe-inspiring views of the Palm, the decision becomes challenging. In this regard, a visit to The View-Observatory, an elevated public observation deck perched meters above Palm Jumeirah on the nd foor of The Palm Tower, is unquestionably essential. Here, the fusion of the sky, sea, and nighttime lights creates a spectacle of unparalleled beauty. But if you fancy the opportunity to swim above the city in what seems like a true oasis in the sky, the AURA Sky Pool at a height of meters is the place for you.

In Dubai, where possibilities seem limitless, not only do you get the chance to enjoy a unique over-the-edge immersion above the city, but you can also have an incredible experience below the waterline at some of the world’s most distinctive accommodations: The Posei-

A TOUR OF DUBAI’S MOST BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING SKYSCRAPERS

text Virginia Mammoli

It is the endlessly surprising city, never tired of breaking and setting Guinness records. That is the reason why not only Dubai’s skyscrapers are very tall- spoiler warning: the world’s tallest skyscraper is in Dubai- but they are also engineering feats whose ultramodern shapes brave the force of gravity and human imagination, leaving you lost for words and creating a unique skyline to which some of the greatest names of contemporary architecture have contributed. We have gone on a tour of this amazing ‘forest’, in search of the most beautiful and peculiar skyscrapers, both those already completed and those under construction, accompanied by architect Alessio Belloni, from the Dubai Alessio LLC frm, in charge of the design and project planning of the Sharjah Royal Palace- of which he completely redesigned the interiors- of the Abu Alkizan, a village in the Khorfakkan area inspired by Rio Maggiore and Portofno, and of the expansion of the Expo Centre Sharjah, in addition to many projects across the world, from China to America through his country of origin, Italy, the ongoing source of inspiration for his works.

It is called The Link, the skyscraper that connects the two towers of the One Za’abeel complex ( and meters respectively), designed to house the One&Only Hotel and residential apartments. The Link is a walkway suspended above the ground across the rd and th foors, -meter-long and -meter tall, with a spectacular ° view over Za’abeel Park, Downtown Dubai and Dubai Creek.

CAYAN TOWER

We’re at the Dubai Marina, at the ‘Infnity Tower’, the world’s tallest spiral-shaped building with a twist of degrees: meters and foors. Its distinctive shape is not only visually impressive, but is also an engineering feat, designed by the award-winning architectural frm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill SOM. The supporting structure is in reinforced high-strength concrete and the twisting design was achieved by rotating each foor , degrees.

THE OPUS

It is the only hotel in the world entirely designed by architect Zaha Hadid: the ME Dubai, in the heart of the Business Bay. The ‘Queen of Curves’, the nickname she was known by, died in , so she could not attend the inauguration ( ), but the building bears the mark of her unmistakable style. The Opus was designed as two separate glass towers that coalesce into a singular whole in the form of a ‘carved’ cube, whose fuidity contrasts with the precise geometry of the surrounding structure. So the width ( meters) equalizes the height ( meters) for a total of , square meters.

FRANCK MULLER AETERNITAS

The lucky future residents will have to wait a bit more (probably / ), but the amazing project that marks the entrance of the famous luxury watchmaking brand Franck Muller into the real estate market has already gone done in history. At the top of the tall tower, at a height of meters, is a huge clock rising above the over foors that house luxury apartments furnished with mosaics, Swarovski chandeliers and marble or parquet foorings.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY EMIRATES

THE ITALIAN AMBASSADOR TO THE UAE LORENZO FANARA INTRODUCES US TO HIS WORLD OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS AND CULTURAL PROJECTS, AND TO HIS FAVORITE PLACES, ABOVE ALL, THE DESERT text Teresa

A spectauclar aerial view of Abu Dhabi city where the Italian Embassy in the Emirates is based

Lorenzo Fanara has been the Italian Ambassador to the Emirates since

. A Sicilian-born lawyer, over his diplomatic career he has held several positions at the Italian Embassy in Moscow and in London, and he served as Ambassador to Tunisia from 8 to .

How did your journey into relations between Italy and the UAE begin and how has it evolved since your arrival?

It started out as an uphill mission, as there were some open questions at the beginning. We solved them together with our Emirati friends in a constructive spirit. Now relations between Italy and the UAE are in an excellent phase, as witnessed also by the various high-level political meetings last year. The UAE is a strategic country for us, an indispensable partner in many global challenges: from security to energy and the fght against climate change, as demonstrated by the COP 8 held in Dubai.

LORENZO FANARA, SICILIAN-BORN LAWYER, ITALIAN AMBASSADOR TO THE EMIRATES SINCE 2022

What does being the Italian Ambassador to the UAE mean to you?

It is a great honour to represent Italy in a country that loves us and has a strong demand for Italy. It is also a great responsibility because in diplomacy, as in few

other professions, one has no right to error. You need sensitivity, respect for the other and also a lot of empathy. In diplomacy, and particularly in the Arab world, personal relationships, mutual trust, keeping one’s word and loyalty are essential. In a way, these are our traditional values, to which I am very attached.

The projects you care most about?

They are the big cultural projects, which we carry out together with the Italian Cultural Institute and some sponsoring companies, such as Eni Plenitude. Investing in cultural dialogue means building bridges of long reach and duration, which bring peoples closer together and facilitate mutual understanding. It is the best way to counter fanaticism and violent extremism. Moreover, Italy is able to offer cultural projects of the highest quality, as in the case of the extraordinary La Scala concerts at Dubai Opera and the Puccini Festival at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. Cultural promotion also contributes to our economy, as Italian exports beneft greatly from the attraction of our millenary culture. Design, fashion, food and wine... how is the Italian lifestyle perceived in the Emirates?

It is enough to take a tour of the shopping malls, restau-

rants, major hotels and homes in the Emirates to realise how widespread Made in Italy and the Italian lifestyle are. Moreover, the fgures for Italian exports to the UAE, more than 6 billion euros a year, are concrete confrmation of this positive perception. Not only are the Italian lifestyle ambassadors the 9, Italian nationals living in the UAE, but also the many Emirati families, who buy Italian design, food and fashion. What do you love about the UAE and what do you think is the spirit of this land?

I love the spirit of peaceful coexistence between different cultures and tolerance towards the religion of others. One signifcant example is the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi, where a church, a synagogue and a mosque coexist in the same architectural complex. For us, this is a fundamental value. It is no coincidence that the frst Foreign Minister to visit that sacred place was the Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

beauty, to which Italian artistic and architectural genius also contributed.

Your favourite addresses where to cultivate the Italian lifestyle in the Emirates?

There are fantastic corners of Italy everywhere in the Emirates. Since I am curious, I always like to discover new places. If I have to mention one, then I would say the Dubai Opera where I try to go whenever the best Italian music is on stage.

‘THERE ARE FANTASTIC CORNERS OF ITALY EVERYWHERE IN THE EMIRATES. SINCE I AM CURIOUS, I ALWAYS LIKE TO DISCOVER NEW PLACES’

Two places and two experiences not to be missed for those who want to discover the most fascinating face of the UAE?

First of all, the desert. As one cannot really understand the UAE, its roots and its mentality without experiencing the desert in depth. Secondly, I would recommend the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for its extraordinary

Your Dubai in 5 top destinations?

Dubai is a dynamic, ever-changing city. Possibly, by the time this interview is published, new top destinations will have emerged. As mentioned, I like going to Dubai Opera, whose programme has improved a lot since Director Paolo Petrocelli took over. Also for art lovers, I would recommend a stroll along Alserkal Avenue with its many galleries and cultural initiatives. I am also fascinated by the fnancial district, one of the few truly cosmopolitan places in the world, perfect for business meetings. To understand the soul and contrasts of the city, I would suggest adding two more destinations: the old city with a walk in the Al Seef and Al Fahidi area, along the canal, with the very frst settlements of Dubai; and, in a completely different key, the Museum of the Future.

In short, there is never a dull moment in Dubai!

Any woman recognizes a Pomellato piece of jewelry the moment she sees it because of its unmistakably elegant and minimalist style. The ‘Pomellato style’ is, in fact, based on three unique values: the frst one is creativity, a source of design and art. Then comes craftsmanship, which refects the glorious tradition of Milanese artisan techniques. Last but not least, taste, in the form of understated elegance.

A handmade luxury fne jewelry brand with over 50 years of life behind it, Pomellato was founded in Milan in 1967 by Pino Rabolini, the descendant of a family of goldsmiths. By perfectly capturing the spirit of his time, Rabolini created a new jewelry style, based on the prêt-à-porter concept and designed for modern and independent women, attuned to Milan’s fashion and design world which was rapidly expanding back then. While traditional jewelry makers had not been able to adapt to the change, Pomellato marked a turning point and introduced the quintessential Milanese elegancenever loud, never opulent, never too showy- into the jewelry world.

women. One of the frst advertising campaigns, in fact, featured a women wearing a black turtleneck that emphasized the Pomellato jewelry she was wearing. In the meantime, at the workshops in Milan, gold became dynamic and light-weight: long chains, signature pendants, the gourmette chain. Nothing more, nothing less. In the decades that followed, Pomellato experimented with soft-shaped stones, maxi-sized rings, bright colors, Helmut Newton’s or Peter Lindbergh’s advertising campaigns. Along with the iconic chains, the Nudo ring describes Pomellato’s passion for color and for experimenting with innovative gem-cutting techniques. The master artisans introduced a new cabochon cut with 57 irregular facets that create squared, bright and soft-to-the-touch volumes. A bold and unconventional piece of jewelry, created in as the modern version of the engagement ring. Nudo evolved into a collection with 9 color variants and 5 models.

Little by little, he produced bolder and larger-sized models, designed to express the spirit of modern

Today Pomellato is part of the Kering group, but the meaning it attaches to ‘modernity’, which is intrinsic to the brand’s identity, is still the same: not being afraid of change and being proud of its incomparable craftsmanship tradition. Ev-

ery day, at the atelier in Milan, over 100 artisans pour passion and skill into gold and gems to create extraordinary pieces of jewelry, the fruit of countless hours of accurate and creative work. Among the precious materials, in addition to rose gold and diamonds, are the colored gemstones, the brand’s new symbol and expression of the deep sense of freedom at the core of its design philosophy.

Pietre libere (free stones) is, as a matter of fact, a new way of telling about the brand, starting from the gemmological point of view, whose uniqueness is the symbol of the sophisticated know-how of Pomellato’s master artisans. From this point of view, the legendary collections, from Nudo to Sabbia up to the High Jewelry pieces, are greatly enhanced. Vincenzo Castaldo, Creative Director, says: “Nudo defnes liberty in the way that the gemstone is devoid of settings and prongs. Thanks to our special cut and setting technique, we enhance the individuality of the gem. Unconstrained, the light plays with the transparency and the irregularities of the 57 facets; it is almost like a metaphor that speaks of women’s freedom as an indispensable value.”

The setters pick diamonds of different sizes and nuances and then skillfully set them according to a seemingly random pattern, while the gold’s slightly curved surfaces give softness and femininity to the design. The goal is sophisticated imperfection. Leaving the gemstone in its raw form, uncut, is another way for Pomellato to oppose the general trend by defying uniformity.

EVERY DAY, AT THE ATELIER IN MILAN, OVER 100 ARTISANS POUR PASSION AND SKILL INTO GOLD AND GEMS TO CREATE EXTRAORDINARY PIECES OF JEWELRY

Sabbia is Pomellato’s approach to diamond jewelry, featuring an organic and irregular pavé.

“We created unique jewelry - Gem Master Stefano Cortecci says - by using baroque gems as an expression of independence. When we use more conventional cuts, we express the concept of Free Stones through color, such as in the case of the high jewelry collection Ode to Milan, for which we chose a range of evocative stones in unusual, vibrant colors, capable of conveying strong feelings”. Of course, Pomellato’s creative freedom fnds its expressive peak in the High Jewelry collection. The choice of colored gemstones is more daring, the pairings unexpected. In addition to the extraordinary colors of the diamond pavés, even shape sets free from rules and convention, such as with the new Charivari pavé pattern, which features fancy pear, marquise and baguette cuts, as well as free shapes. Irregular yet harmonious, it represent the free spirit that has always guided the brand.

Pieces that demonstrate how different civilisations have coexisted in the same space, and highlight similarities and exchange in a shared human experience that knows no limits of place or time.

stars of different sizes set at different angles in eight layers. As the rays of sunshine flter through, geometric patterns create a beautiful play of light and shade, dubbed ‘shower of light’, on the foor. The dome also holds a message for visitors: Louvre Abu Dhabi celebrates universal human creativity and invites the public to see humanity in a new light.

THE MUSEUM’S GROWING COLLECTION IS UNPARALLELED IN THE REGION AND SPANS THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF HUMAN HISTORY, INCLUDING PREHISTORIC TOOLS, ARTEFACTS, RELIGIOUS TEXTS, ICONIC PAINTINGS AND CONTEMPORARY ARTWORKS

Arising from an exceptional agreement between the governments of France and Abu Dhabi, Louvre Abu Dhabi was designed by Jean Nouvel. The building echoes traditional Islamic architecture, and its great dome, inspired by the classic domes of the Arab world, is a complex geometric structure consisting of 7,85

The museum’s permanent collection is unequalled in the region and embraces millennia of human history, ranging from prehistoric tools and artefacts to religious texts, iconic paintings and contemporary artworks. This core is supplemented by loans on rotation from 9 French partner institutions and regional and international museums. “The idea is to represent a rhythm that’s shared and not necessarily chronological, but based on continuous dialogue between the various artworks. A dialogue that’s both formal and visual, which can present the past not as a fxed thing, but as something in constant relation and re-elaboration, like a laboratory that offers the opportunity to fnd points in common instead of divisions”, says Souraya Noujaim, director of science, curatorship and management at the muse-

um. The desire to re-think the concept of universality is strong in the new paradigm of modern museums, which sees encyclopaedic collections as the product of a colonial and imperial past, not only in terms of provenance, but also due to their presentation of exhibits in a hierarchical classifcation. “For that very reason”, explains Manuel Rabaté, director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, “our task was to reinvent and reintroduce a vision of art and world history that would focus on dialogue rather than classify knowledge”. A strategy which would - in his view - allow the museum to speak to various communities, and which in itself refects the spirit of the Arab Emirates, a country whose population is largely immigrants and foreigners in constant fux. Visiting the permanent collection, the formal expression of this strategy is evident: the three wings of the museum present more than 6 works and artefacts divided by theme, without geographical compartmentalisation. It all begins in the great vestibule, where - for example - a Chinese vase dialogues with a French casket and a pagoda from Oceania. This approach continues through the various sections, culminating in the wing that tells the story of faith, entitled Universal Religions This area sets out to explore Buddhism, Christianity and Islam and their roles in the process of civilisation over the past years. Equally fascinating are the museum’s temporary exhibitions, which have featured highlights in universal art, from Leonardo da Vinci’s St John the Baptist to works by Michelangelo Pistoletto. Once again, past and present in close contact. In 4, alongside the permanent collection, there are

some interesting exhibitions. Picturing the Cosmos, at the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Children’s Museum until June 5, takes youngsters on a journey in space through its representations in art.

Cartier, Islamic Inspiration and Modern Design (until 4 March) is organised in collaboration with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Louvre Museum and France Muséums, with support from the Cartier maison. The exhibition highlights the infuence of Islamic art on Cartier designs from the early th century to the present day. Co-curated by Évelyne Possémé, formerly head curator of ancient and modern jewellery at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and Judith Hénon-Raynaud, curator and assistant director of the Islamic Art department at the Louvre, the exhibition will include over 5 items, from jewellery and masterpieces of Islamic art to drawings, books, photographs and archive documents.

Last but not least, Fables from East and West: from Kalila wa Dimna to the fables of La Fontaine, until 4 July 4: the literary genre of animal fables, born in India and Greece in the st century BC, was continued by Ibn al-Muqaffa’ in the Arab-Islamic world and Aesop in Greece and Rome. Over the millennia, fables have constantly evolved and adapted from one language to another, giving rise to many new works in both East and West. Organised in partnership with the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and France Muséums, Fables from East and West examines the roots and evolution of the genre through a series of illustrated manuscripts, paintings, contemporary works and more.

117 ART EVENT
ART DUBAI, A FAIR THAT’S INCREASINGLY CATALYSING ENERGY AND TALENT text Francesca Lombardi

Art Dubai, taking place in the frst week of March, confrms its role as an important catalyst of creative energy worldwide, able to convey a rapidly-changing world with all its troubles but all its wonders too. To get the backstory of the edition of an event that’s no mere fair but a genuine exhibition, we interviewed Benedetta Ghione, Executive Director of Art Dubai.

How has Art Dubai become a truly global event that increasingly gives a voice to the most disadvantaged regions of the world?

Art Dubai is as unique as Dubai itself. In many ways, the galleries represented in the Contemporary, Bawwaba, Art Dubai Modern and Art Dubai Digital sections refect the multicultural identity and communities that make up our city. Since it began in 7, Art Dubai has expanded to present artists, galleries and partners not only from the Middle East, but also from South and South-East Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe on the international art scene. We frmly believe that this distinguishes Art Dubai from other international art fairs, and we’re proud to provide a platform and support these voices.

BENEDETTA GHIONE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ART DUBAI

In we’re taking another step forward. Through our gallery presentations and the busy programme of talks, performances and workshops, we’re expanding the defnition of the Global South by telling real human stories, spotlighting the individual and collective journeys of artists and communities from distant cities including São Paolo, Beirut, Tehran, Bogotá, Jakarta and Mumbai. You’re undoubtedly an important incubator of talent; how did you come to occupy this role in the contemporary art world?

Education and cultural leadership have always been an integral part of the fair’s vision, and in a place like Dubai our role is institutional as well as commercial. Art Dubai has always prioritised capacity building, creating educational programmes and initiatives to foster a dynamic ecosystem and support present and future generations of artists, audiences and cultural leaders.

This year we’re very proud to host the fourth edition of the A.R.M. children’s programme, the largest children’s art education project in the United Arab Emirates. This year the children’s workshops will be run by the Indian artist Sahil Naik. Starting

This year’s edition of Art Dubai seeks to expand definitions of the ‘Global South’ beyond traditional geographic and economic boundaries, emphasising the shared histories and distinct narratives of communities worldwide, from Delhi, Tehran and Cairo to Bogotá and Guatemala City, as well as diasporic and migrant histories from global centres like London, Paris and New York

Works from the Contemporary Section of the Fair.

Art Dubai Contemporary presents the very best in cutting-edge contemporary art from around the world, with particular focus on art and artists from the Global South.

For our 17th edition, the fair welcomes 72 contemporary exhibitors from more than 50 cities spanning five continents

with the sessions held at the fair, the programme will subsequently spread to more than schools, reaching over , pupils in the seven Emirates. Campus Art Dubai is now in its th edition, and offers professional development and training opportunities to recent graduates entering the culture sector. It’s encouraging to see how many of them have built careers in the UAE’s culture sector, and how many have participated in this programme over the years.

The Global Art Forum is another example: it’s our fagship programme, and it’s earned us an international reputation as a platform that brings together the world’s most infuential and creative thinkers to discuss some of the critical issues of our age. The forum is entitled Whether or Not; it’s commissioned by Shumon Basar and curated by Nadine El Khoury, and it explores extreme climate crisis. We’re also organising Modern and Collecting Talks in collaboration with the Dubai Collection, focusing on the research and art collection practices that are relevant for this region’s artists and art history.

How do you explain the growing interest in non-Western art?

OUR MISSION INCLUDES INCREASING THE VISIBILITY OF DIVERSE ARTISTS AND VOICES FROM NEW AND EMERGING PLACES AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS, GOING BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF THE TRADITIONAL WESTERN CANON

The global gaze is shifting politically, economically and, increasingly, culturally. As an art fair, we’re committed to staying relevant and responding to the changing times. Our mission includes increasing the visibility of diverse artists and voices from new and emerging places and cultural backgrounds, going beyond the boundaries of the traditional western canon. The expressions of diaspora communities in cities like Berlin, London, New York and Paris are gaining importance within artistic discourse. There’s also growing recognition of non-western female artists. The response and growing acknowledgement in global art circles are particularly encouraging.

Why is digital art so important?

In the highly media-fuelled st century, we’re witnessing the ascent of digital art and artists, and both Art Dubai and Dubai itself have played a major part in the conversation and curatorship of the medium. We’re the frst and only major art event with a dedicated digital section that offers a real snapshot of the panorama of digital art and new media, a sphere

123 ART EVENT

that’s as yet not fully understood, in spite of the uproar it evokes in certain ways. This year’s edition is curated by Alfredo Cramerotti and Auronda Scalera, and presents digital artworks and innovative new media by pioneering digital artists. This year we’re delighted to be expanding the scope of Art Dubai Digital with the launch of a new Digital Summit to coincide with the fair.

The aim is to provide a platform for dialogue, collaboration and innovation, bringing together international and local speakers and supporting the development of Dubai’s digital art ecosystem. Which well-known and less known artists should we keep an eye on?

One of this year’s most exciting exhibitions is Bawwaba, which means ‘door’ in Arabic. Beautifully curated by Emiliano Valdes and themed around Sanación/Healing, it’s defnitely a strong show. This year the curatorship prioritises the presentation of less well-known but highly impactful artists. The Indian contemporary artist Debashish Paul is compelling, with his unique paintings and performative photography. Buenos Aires-based artist and anthropologist Nicolas Janowski presents land-

scapes linked to holy places and portraits critical of acculturation and extermination. Afghan-Indian artist Arshi Ahmadzai analyses the experiences of women under social and political pressure, while Mozambican ceramicist Reinata Sadimba explores loss and motherhood through her art.

Which are the most prestigious Italian galleries?

THE GALLERIES REPRESENTED IN THE CONTEMPORARY, BAWWABA, ART DUBAI MODERN AND ART DUBAI DIGITAL SECTIONS REFLECT THE MULTICULTURAL IDENTITY AND COMMUNITIES THAT MAKE UP OUR CITY

The edition of Art Dubai features a number of Italian artists and galleries, with Milan ahead in terms of participants thanks to its four important contemporary art galleries - Peres Projects, Plan X, Secci and Immaterika. Turin follows with three galleries, Mazzoleni, Galleria Franco Noero and Giorgio Persano.

At Art Dubai Digital , Cinello of Florence will take visitors on a journey through centuries of Italian art, from the Renaissance masters to the artists of today.

Another exciting addition to the fair is Immaterika, a Web creative factory which will present one of the fathers of digital art, Fabrizio Plessi. Secci, with branches in Florence, Milan and Pietrasanta, will be part of the Bawwaba section, exhibiting works by the Indian artist Abul Hisham.

A FAMILY STORY

FERRARI TRENTO, A SUCCESSFUL BLEND OF LAND, PASSION, STYLE AND SUSTAINABILITY

It has been producing excellence for over a century and it has established itself as a model in its feld. We are talking about the Ferrari Trento estate which, with its certifed organic vineyards that extend as far as the eye can see along the sides of Italy’s most beautiful mountains, the Dolomites , near the city of Trento , has become a benchmark for Italian family-run entrepreneurial activity, having been able to innovate and face with far-sightedness the markets’ global challenge.

Established in 9 by Giulio Ferrari when Trento was a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and a property of the Lunelli family since 95 - now with its third-generation members at the head of the company: cousins Camilla, Matteo, Marcello and Alessandro - the Ferrari Trento estate has grown over the years into a legend and its products are one of the symbols of Italian style all over the world. But the key of its success lies in the upstream supply chain, the countryside, where the grapes are grown. All the vineyards have been certifed organic since 7 and are governed by a sustainability protocol that aims to produce healthy and top

quality grapes. Since , the farmhouse has been using only renewable energy and has been granted the Carbon Neutral certifcation, owing to the reduction and compensation of direct emissions.

BONDS WITH THE LAND AND LOCAL CULTURE, BUT ALSO IN THE FOREFRONT FOR INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

A tour of these places is an experience of beauty in every way: a journey through nature, art and taste that continues along the slopes of Mount Bondone where, nestled amidst woods and vineyards, is Villa Margon, a magnifcent sixteenth-century complex and the headquarters of the Lunelli Group, a gem of Renaissance mountain architecture, described as the most beautiful residence outside of the city of the whole mountain area.
