Stairway to?

The rumour mill is up and running with Led Zepplin posting on their official Facebook page a picture of the word ‘five’. Many fans are guessing that it could be a reference to an upcoming release of their 2007 O2 reunion concert on DVD, but of course hoping for a new album. The latter sounds unlikely according to Robert Plant in recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine. The frontman stated, “I’ve gone so far somewhere else that I almost can’t relate to it... It’s a bit of a pain in the pisser to be honest.” Watch this space.

Only a few weeks after the release of the band’s 10th album, Centipede Hz, Animal Collective have announced their return to our shores in January 2013. It’s been three years since their last visit and with 15 years of making music under the band’s belt this show will be pretty epic. This show is one exciting Big Day Out sideshow coming to NZ so far… lets keep our fingers crossed for a few more. SEE THEM LIVE: Animal Collective

The Frontier Touring Company announced this last week that the American hip hop group Far East Movement have been forced to cancel their upcoming New Zealand and Australian tour. MIDNIGHT CURFEW WHO SHOT ROCK & ROLL

ANDREW WILSON DIE! DIE! DIE!

Kiwi rock band Midnight Youth’s frontman, Jeremy Redmore, announced on Twitter last week that he has decided to move on and leave from the band. In his blog he explained his decision for removing himself from the band and focusing on solo work after 8 years.

Favourite drink? Depends if I am drinking or not. Sober: Irn-Bru. Drinking: Pinot noir. Favourite takeaway? Zap Thai in Pt. Chev. Favourite classic film? A Clockwork Orange. Favourite childhood memory? Running through long grass in Central Otago. Favourite party food? Drugs? Favourite song? ‘Telegram Sam’ – T. Rex. Favourite meal? Cheese and pickle.

“What I’ve recently discovered about myself is that, to be happy, productive and to grow more as a person, I need to make a fresh start. In order to do this, there is no doubt in my mind that I need to leave my band.” “Midnight Youth has, undoubtedly, given me some of the best years I will have in my life and I am well aware that I may never have the same kind of commercial success in a chosen field ever again. I will forever be indebted to the guys in the band and the people who supported and fell in love with the songs we created and gave me a stage to perform upon.” “I have now chosen to pave my own street, pack my own bags, strip myself naked and, importantly, sing my own song. Follow me if you choose…” No statement from the band or their management has been released as of yet and the future of the band seems to be up in the air.

In November the Auckland Art Gallery will host the photographic exhibition, Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 – Present. Who Shot Rock & Roll includes 173 works from more than 100 photographers. Photographers include Diane Arbus, Roberta Bayley, Henry Diltz, Godlis, Dennis Hopper, David LaChappelle, Annie Leibovitz, Linda McCartney and Albert Watson. The exhibition curated by photographic historian and author Gail Buckland explains, “This exhibition is not a history of rock-n-roll, but of the men and women who have photographed it and given the music its visual identity,’ says Buckland. ‘From its earliest days, rock-n-roll was captured in photographs that personalised and frequently eroticised musicians. Photographers were handmaidens to the rock-n-roll revolution, and their work communicates the social and cultural transformations that rock helped bring about from the 1950s onwards.’ The exhibition is coming straight for the states and will start in NZ on Sat 10 Nov. Ticket information will be released at the end of September.

Favourite cause? Fuck the man. Favourite label to put on your relationship? Happy. Favourite ‘90s TV show? Married with Children. Favourite word? Fuck. Favourite album? Lust for life - Iggy Pop.

The string band rocks like punk, swings like gospel and drinks like country. You’ll be toe-tapping, head-banging and swigging whiskey in no time.

Looking for drum ‘n’ bass to make your mind explode? State of Mind is one of those acts right up there with international heavyweights Sub Focus and Chase & Status. 5PM, $10, DOOR SALES ONLY

My lazy Sunday usually consists of boring housework, playing Xbox and supermarket shopping. Oh the life! Jazz up your Sunday sessions with live music at the 1590_Hauraki_Groove_Guide.pdf 1 9/6/2012 10:17:25 AM Wine Cellar. Today’s entertainment is HDSPNS, Xuri Xruz, Chris Rakete and Space Ventura.

It has been a particularly rough year for Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power). She’s cancelled several high-profile appearances including Coachella, battled alcoholism and gone through a messy break-up with long-term boyfriend Giovanni Ribisi. Fans would be forgiven for thinking that her new album would echo this turmoil – but it’s quite the opposite. Along with her long locks, Chan has shed her demons and produced a surprisingly upbeat pop album – her first in six years – and it is achingly good. Sun was produced almost completely by Chan alone over a period of three years and has been described by the lady herself as a “rebirth”. A hypnotic voice is the only relic of the old Cat Power – she has emerged from heartache to offer something quite beautiful to the world, an album laced with many musical influences and life lessons – particularly for her younger fans. Sun kicks off with ‘Cherokee’ and its haunting lyrics: “If I die before

my time, bury me upside down”. The song sets the scene for the rest of the album: uplifting guitar and vocal hooks are laced with a distinct electronic edge. ‘Ruin’, the first single from the album, will certainly attract new audiences. It’s catchy, flirty and enjoyable with a distinct Latin vibe thrown in for good measure. However, the song that has everyone talking is the 11-minute ‘Nothing But Time’, allegedly written for Ribisi’s teenage daughter. It’s a call for individual strength and identity, a powerful and sincere call to action for young women with lyrics like “Never give away your body/Never give away your friends/Never give away what you always wanted.” Better yet, Iggy Pop wades in to provide backing vocals. She may be notorious for her erratic stage performances and blotchy output, but Cat Power has come out on top this time. She has put the emotional guff aside and allowed her natural talent to take centre stage. WRITTEN BY REBECCA EMERY

JO NESBO’S JACKPOT GENERAL RELEASE

82 Minutes

From the crime-writing mind of author Jo Nesbø (some say the Swedish equivalent of Stieg Larsson) this comedy/crime thriller follows four ex-cons as they load up their guns after collectively winning 1.7 million kroner – only to argue over how to split it. Sounds like a foreign Snatch, but without the pikeys.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? PRIME, 8.30PM

Action romantic comedies tend to produce some poorly manufactured star-studded cash-grabs (The Bounty Hunter, This Means War). Fortunately, co-director/writer/lead actor Dax Shepard steers clear of this territory, moulding Hit and Run with an indie sensibility reminiscent of the Duplass brothers, although it may not match their smarts. It’s essentially a chase film, revolving around Dax’s character Charlie Bronson (a faux name, yes) who helps his girlfriend get to Los Aangeles with three entities in pursuit: a useless cop, a pathetic ex-boyfriend and a gang member from Charlie’s shrouded past. The script is consistently chuckleinducing. Every character nails the delivery, showing Dax’s strong control over his own material. They reel back and correct themselves on some of the more discriminatory gags, most noticeably when Charlie drops the “fag” bomb, apologising for it a

minute later – Hit and Run proving both liberally humorous and humorously liberal. The story simmers for the first half hour, but when conflict finally drops, the resolutions don’t play out as you’d expect, with the characters solving their issues through reason and understanding rather than overtly contrived and exaggerated reactions. It’s a refreshing defiance of traditional rom-com conventions, most evident in the scenes where Charlie reveals his prior life to his girlfriend. With some likeable characters and a script that mixes laughs and charm, Hit and Run is well worth a watch. However, it never presents anything beyond “likeable”, the car-chase scenes are strangely monotonous and the anticlimactic end dampens the experience. BY LIAM MAGUREN, FLICKS.CO.NZ

Shit worth dRINKING

GRAND CENTRAL 126 PONSONBY RD

During the month of September Grand Central is giving you the chance to win an insane prize of $25,000. Simply spend $20 at the bar between 7 and 9pm and you will be in to win. Imagine how many drinks that will buy you! Ponsonby’s own GC is the pulsing beat of the night scene.

CHAPEL BAR & BISTRO 147 PONSONBY ROAD

“We’re going to the chapel and we’re gonna get married”…no wait, wrong chapel. At this chapel, you will find a place that caters for all tastes. Famed for their gourmet pizzas, such as wild mushrooms, Danish feta, caramelised onions, truffle oil and thyme.

THE LIBRARY

As the name suggests, it’s like sitting in your favourite library of all time – if your favourite library was filled with retro books, the sweet smell of mahogany and a bathtub (I kid you not). Not to mention the best cocktails in town. The Library is the best venue for tapas, platters and the most exotic cocktails you can think of. Mine had rose petals in it and smelt like rosewater. Amazing. Go to read one of their many books or hide in a dark corner on one of their retro couches. It’s like stepping into a 1970s country club without the pretentious polo players.

WATCH YOURSELF IT ’S BEEN THREE YEARS IN THE MAKING, BUT AN EXPERIENCED TEAM OF COMEDY REGULARS GOT THE WATCH OFF THE GROUND.

It hasn’t been an easy road for The Watch. Formerly titled Neighborhood Watch, the film has changed directors, producers and even actors more times than Kim Kardashian changes husbands since its inception in 2008. At one point, it infamously looked as if the project would fail after marketing was pulled following the death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida – an unarmed teenage who was killed by a neighbourhood watch captain. However, the key group soldiered on, and so was born The Watch: a story about four guys (Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and The It Crowd’s Richard Ayoade) looking to spice up their lives with a bit of neighbourhood watch. They get more than they bargained for when they discover aliens have invaded their quiet suburb. Directed by Saturday Night Live and The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, the 35-year-old rookie was handed an opportunity of a lifetime after impressing the studio with his pitch. “I told them that I wanted to set it in a grounded world where these guys were naturalistic in their performances,” he says. “If it’s going to be crazy, everything else should be straight up. Plus with the R-rating, part of the joy was that if real people are encountering real things, I wanted them to be free to talk as real people would. The fun was in not cleaning it up: this was four really regular guys with dirty mouths.” Jumping into a big budget film after his debut feature and cult-comedy classic Hot Rod in 2007, Akiva says he had to wrap his head around the extensive CGI and action sequences. Lucky for him, he had some topquality support. He was working with a killer script written by none other than Seth Rogen and writing partner Jared Stern. Lead actor Ben Stiller first read this script a few years into the development, long before Rogen and Stern had rewritten it – and long before it had a foul-mouthed makeover from the PG-13, family-friendly piece it was originally. As the king of family comedy movies, there was a time when Stiller was working with more risqué material (Zoolander, Dodgeball), so what did he think of the script?

“The original was good, but Seth and Jared’s version was a lot funnier,” says Stiller. “With the freedom of being R-rated, it was able to go into directions that it couldn’t go before, take the idea and make it more interesting. It didn’t have to be across the board family entertainment: it could be something that could take more chances and get into weirder areas.” Fellow comedy heavyweights Jonah Hill (recently wowing critics with his writing skills on 21 Jump Street) and Vince Vaughn (who, let’s be honest, has had a recent bad run a la Four Holidays, but will always be my hero for Wedding Crashers) seemed like a natural choice in a comedy project that brought together the old “brat pack” with new upstarts. But where does relative newcomer and British actor Richard Ayoade fit in? Having already secured three huge names for the project, Akiva felt he could mix it up with his final member of the gang. “The question was, do we go for someone equally well-known for the fourth [member], or do we try to find what I called ‘our McLovin’ – the surprise, the wildcard,” says the director. “Someone brought up Richard Ayoade and I was a fan of his from his work. By Monday I was like, ‘It’s got to be him’.” This decision no doubt came as a huge surprise to the 35-year-old British actor, writer and director, who soon found himself playing the somewhat mysterious fourth wheel in The Watch. “My wife said it looked like I’d won a competition to be in a film with movie stars,” he deadpans. “That’s sort of what it felt like for quite a while: I’d never been in a film, really.” Despite their very different backgrounds, one thing is for sure: comedians will be comedians and The Watch brings together an ample amount of improvisation, unexpected moments and off-the-wall comedy that will make the audience forget the drama behind the scenes. ACCORDING TO MUSIQ IN THE LEAD UP TO THE R&B CROONER SEDUCING THE KIWI CROWD, MUSIQ SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON LOVE.

Shakespeare once famously said, “If music be the food of love, play on.” That was in a time of sonnets, lyrical comparisons to flowers and a whole lot of sexual innuendo. Although not much has changed, it is fair to say even Shakespeare would have been wooed by the smooth sounds of Musiq Soulchild (the name says it all).

he had not experienced firsthand, but a subject “it was only fair I shine a light on”, knowing that many of his fans and friends had dealt with this. As such, he also became an ambassador for Susan G Komen for the Cure, a movement designed to further engage black women around the globe in the fight against breast cancer.

Gentlemen, want to win over your lady? Learn how to write and sing like this guy. Four of his six albums have gone either US gold or platinum, he’s been Grammy nominated 11 times and his sexual, soulful voice has made women fall in love with him since 2000. Not to mention, he’s incredibly good looking.

“The song didn’t start off about breast cancer and I’m honoured I got to do that. It’s an extremely trying disease and I wanted to do whatever I could to draw attention to it. I’m doing whatever I can to give back.”

The R&B singer takes this all within his stride, of course. Born the oldest of nine children in Philadelphia, Musiq (real name Taalib Johnson) sites everyone from Stevie Wonder to Patti LaBelle as his musical inspiration, but it really comes down to his fans. They’re the ones he takes the most away from. “I do what I do for my supporters who are interested in what I’m doing,” he says. “So when I get feedback and critiques, I take that into heavy consideration because you guys are the ones I am doing it for.” While his music deals with a variety of topics within the love and relationships spectrum (break ups, first love, true love, struggling with a loved one that is ill), he says his songs come from a place that is not autobiographical. Although it is well-documented that he wrote ‘So Beautiful’ for girlfriend Kameelah Williams, the songs often come from a place of personal in a different sense. “They are personal in the sense that everything I sing about I have experienced,” he explains. “However, none of my songs are excerpts from my life personally. They are songs about situations I have experienced in my life that pretty much everyone else does, so I am speaking on them from an objective perspective.” One particular song, ‘Yes’, deals with an intimate account of a woman struggling with breast cancer, with her partner (shown to be Musiq) affirming that yes, he will stand by her. Again, this was something that

It’s these intimate lyrics and themes that Musiq deals with on a frequent basis that has given him an eye-opening view on things that often go unspoken about. “It’s completely reassuring because it means my music is getting the intended inference,” he explains. “I’m not doing this to be popular, to seem like a saint or do-gooder dude. What I need is for it to have an authentic, lasting effect on the people. For those people who come to me and say, “Yol, thank you for doing what you did. It really touched me and it was something good.’ As such, Musiq has put his experiences and education into words – and this time, not in a song. He penned a book called 143 Love According to Musiq, a “conversational piece in order to create a stronger bond between two people”. So what’s his best piece of relationship advice? “My best piece of relationship advise would be if you find somebody that you are interested in romantically– I don’t mean you just trying to hook up – my advice is to accept that person for whoever they are. It might sound simple, but you’d be surprised how many people put certain expectations on a relationship.”

Kojima stopped short of saying that Ground Zeroes would be Metal Gear Solid 5, but it’s indeed another prequel to the first Metal Gear Solid, with Big Boss once again the main protagonist. It takes the traditional Metal Gear Solid gameplay and applies it to a more open-world setting, removing many of the restrictions of the previous games. There are a number of interesting tidbits from the demo that hint at the nature of Ground Zeroes. Snake can now approach enemy bases and encampments from any angle, opening up infiltration options even further than in previous games. Seemingly taking a cue from the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Snake can also now steal and drive vehicles. In this demo, he took a brief spin in a military jeep he encountered in the enemy camp.

Have you ever been listening to your tunes via your computer and thought, “I wish I had the novelty of holding my hand up to the camera and pausing this song?” Well, now you can enjoy this feature for free. It works with a variety of media players too.

Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear series is one of the most enduring games in the industry, as evidenced most succinctly perhaps by its recent 25th anniversary. In celebration of that milestone, Kojima and publisher Konami announced a number of new Metal Gear projects – none thrilled gamers more than the revealing of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros.

TWO IS BETTER You and your buddy can take your party DJing to the next level with the Numark iDJ Mixing Console for iPods. High five as you seamlessly integrate your music libraries and enjoy the best party you’ve ever had. RRP $499.00 mixfoundation.co.nz

In addition, Snake can now make use of a flare to call in a support helicopter anywhere, at any time. It’s understood there will be a range of uses for this mechanic that haven’t yet been revealed. It was mentioned, however, that the chopper can provide covering fire for Snake and, presumably, a distraction that will draw enemy attention away from him. Despite some dramatic changes, Ground Zeroes still seems like a Metal Gear Solid game to its very core. In fact, Kojima said he’s trying to recreate that Metal Gear Solid one feeling on the new game engine. In the past, Kojima may have sworn off making another Metal Gear game and at this introspective, he admitted he’s not personally interested in spin-offs. But he ended the introspective with an assurance: he’s personally creating Ground Zeroes and he’s invested in it, henceforth putting all of his time and energy into it. “Yes, Snake is back. But I’m also back,” he declared. It’s comforting to know. WRITTEN BY CHRIS LEGGETT

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? To create and inspire. Keep it bright, bold and fun. Childhood is a big source of inspiration for me, so I like to keep the feel of the designs pure, and to emulate the way children approach dressing up - without any reservation is something I try to incorporate into the feel of each piece. Which historical figure had some wicked style? Coco Channel. “Dress shabbily, they notice the dress. Dress impeccably, they notice the woman”.

What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Madonna. Although her style was pretty hot when she was twenty, now she is in her fifties leotards and tight leather outfits just don’t look the same. I think it’s important to dress in a way that’s flattering to you, not just what’s fashionable. Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Jeggings worn as jeans... Jeggings can be worn with long tunics or tees, but not as jeans! They are just too clingy. Thankfully we won’t be seeing many around this season! What’s the must-have look this spring? Princess line tailoring, Peter pan collars, (Etsy. com has some amazing hand-made ones) Pastel colours, and retro 1950’s silhouettes. Full dresses and skirts are a must for spring and summer. Colours/patterns big this season? Pastel candy colours, love these in accessories & heels! Especially in mint and lilac, team this softer form of colour blocking with a little white or cream to tie an outfit together. What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? A nice pair of chinos & a simple relaxed tee.

MIKEY HAVOC Prepared for trouble… Mikey Havoc has joined the Radio Hauraki team and will no doubt be causing it. What are you working on right now? A new radio show on Radio Hauraki: Mon-Fri 7-10pm. We are up and running and I am very excited. Who was an inspiration or idol to you growing up? Colonel Steve Austin, Evel Knievel, Ali and Batman. When you were a kid what was your dream job? An astronaut. I also thought a Guy Smiley sort of game show host had merit. What’s your favourite venue in the country? The Powerstation. Great memories and magnificent gigs since ages ago and they are still doing it. Where was the last place you went out for dinner? Fancy – Dine by Peter Gordon. On the cheap – those dumplings from the ‘open til late’ place on Krd. Where’s the best place to get Eggs Benedict? Takapuna Beach Café. Only have had their eggs once. Made an impression obviously. What has been the best show you’ve attended this year? Been to some beauties, but to be honest I’m still absolutely humming from last years visit from Kyuss. Both nights. Fuck yes. What show are you most anticipating this year? The Black Keys, who played the Kings Arms last time they flew in. This time it’s at big ol’ Vector Arena. It’ll be my first chance to see them live and I have a feeling that it’s going to be a howling sweaty night of rock ‘n’ roll swagger. Is tall poppy syndrome a thing? It’s a shame but it does and as NZ’ers it’s one of our most mysterious character traits. Don’t understand why we have such trouble getting 30

New Zealand music needs more… Great songs. Can never have too many great songs! New Zealand television needs more… Decent programmes. New Zealand theatre needs more… People to appreciate how important it is. Name five things surrounding you right now. Robosapien, a didgeridoo, anxiety, hairspray and a blowdart Gun
