Gregory Kuiper is one of those extraverted people who dazzles you with his wit, charm and insightful mind. No wonder that he brings all of that to his images. Following in a long tradition going back to Atget, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helen Levitt and Lee Friedlander, he celebrates the beauty in a vibrant city environment. Landscapes, architecture, people and objects are all fertile ground for his inquisitive mind and perceptive eye. The resulting photographs have beauty, yes, but also a sense of intimacy, pathos and at times, great humor. The images speak both to the man and his humanity, and his fascination with the world he so clearly loves.
Allen Birnbach has been a widely recognized commercial and fine art photographer for over thirty years. Allen’s images have been exhibited in galleries around the world, and are represented in numerous private and corporate collections.
PREFACE I like simplicity, single objects or people in empty spaces, monochromatic tones, and images that tell a story. All of the photos in this book were shot in natural light. Although I shoot with a digital camera, I still prefer the softer look that more closely resembles film. I love black and white images because you don’t get seduced or distracted by color. When I first conceived the idea for this book, I really had no idea what to expect from Paris. Once you are there however, you get a feeling that ’s hard to describe with words. It ’s a timeless city full of lights, parks, shops, galleries, artists, beautiful architecture, high fashion and fine cuisine. What ’s missing from this description is the mood that envelopes you as you explore and taste it. It can be a bit overwhelming at times, but always in a good way. I’m nostalgic for a simpler time and shooting in Paris gave me many opportunities to capture the timeless mood of this fascinating city. I hope these images bring you closer to Paris.
