Walking for 25 years OVER one hundred enthusiastic Walking For Pleasure walkers are expected to walk from The City Botanic Gardens to New Farm, on Tuesday April 9th to celebrate the Twentieth Fifth Anniversary of the commencement of this popular Brisbane walking program. WFP gives its participants the opportunity to discover Brisbane City, suburbs and surrounding shires on foot with a group of friendly people. WFP was initiated in 1988 by the Brisbane City Council in conjunction with the Queensland Council on the Ageing. The inaugural walk of one hour was from City Hall to the City Botanic Gardens. Walks continued once a week, at 10.00am along the City reaches of the Brisbane River using the Coronation Drive Bikeway to Toowong. From these small beginnings, more walks were added each week, early morning, twilight and night walks. Our walks today are many and varied including heritage, parkland, bush and riverside walks.Water, makes our walks enjoyable. We walk around the fringes of lagoons; & lakes; along rivers & creeks and through wetlands. We travel by water taxi to walk Stradbroke; Coochiemudlo and other bay islands. Even walks beside the tidal mud flats of our local foreshores that reveal scarpering crustaceans in the tidal pools. The Walking For Pleasure program is designed for most fitness levels and these interesting walks, are of 2 hour or 90 minute duration, some with options for a shorter walk. Most are accessible by public transport. New walks are constantly added to the Walking for Pleasure Brisbane Inc. program which now numbers over 600 walks annually. Walkers are encouraged to walk at their own pace. Volunteers are in attendance to lead and tailend each walk. A Walk Program booklet is produced every four months and is available on request. In the early 1990’s adventure camps, under canvas were introduced successfully, and a programme of Outdoor Adventures added, including full day bush walks, camps and safaris, both inter and intra state. This initiative of the volunteers for Walking for Pleasure continues today – less canvas, more cabins.

IT’S Blue Care’s 60 th anniversary year and the organisation is celebrating with 60 events staged across Queensland and northern New South Wales communities. Blue Care Executive Director Robyn Batten said the iconic notfor-profit organisation directly assisted 60,000 people each year and played an integral role in keeping families and communities together. “Blue Care’s work and the difference it has made to more than 80 communities across Queensland and northern New South Wales in the past 60 years will be acknowledged and celebrated this year,” she said. “Blue Care began in 1953 with just one nurse and has grown into one of Australia’s leading not-for-

profit service providers with 10,600 staff and volunteers across a wide range of care and support roles. “Each day Blue Care’s dedicated team makes a difference, supporting people to maintain their independence and quality of life.” Ms Batten said August 24, 2013 was the official 60th anniversary date. Blue Care’s centres and services will host 60 events across the year in different communities, starting next month. Events are made possible thanks to a range of sponsors, including major sponsors Bunzl and Lion. “Some events will be open to the public, and others may be of a smaller scale for clients, residents, staff, friends and stakeholders,” she said. “Updates and other 60th news will soon be added to our website: www.bluecare.org.au or posted to Facebook, at w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / BlueCareAustralia, for anyone who would like more information.” Blue Care started as the Blue Nursing Service – an outreach initiative the Methodist Mission congregations at West End in inner Brisbane. The first house call by a ‘blue nurse’ – so named because

of the blue uniform she wore – was logged on August 24, 1953 when Sister Olive Crombie travelled by tram to tend to a patient. The organisation grew to provide more than nursing services, and in 1999 its name changed to Blue Care to reflect the diversity of services offered. “Staff once travelled on foot, by tram or by catching a lift with volunteers and today we have the second-largest vehicle fleet in Australia of 1500 vehicles, which travel more than 31 million kilometres a year,” Ms Batten said. “We look forward to our continued role assisting Australians with service and accommodation choices which are tailor made to people’s individual needs and flexible as their circumstances change.” Services are available to older Australians; people living with chronic disease or a disability and; those recovering from illness or hospitalisation. They are offered in people’s homes, in the community, in residential aged care facilities and retirement living villages. Walking for 25 years Continued from Page 1 Sand washed clean by the high tide provides a canvas for our footprints on early morning walks along white beaches or through pungent rain forest on our Outdoor Adventures where it is not unknown to climb up headlands to beckoning lighthouses in the early am.. In 1998 the group became incorporated and in 2002 a decision was made to become an independent not for profit, self-funding, community group run by our volunteers, Walking for Pleasure Brisbane Inc. Membership is predominately aged 40 to mid80s and the group continues to grow. WFP now has a large membership drawn from all over Brisbane. These people have discovered that an active way of life is important and becomes more important as one grows older. It provides many health and social benefits for all participants, walking being one of the least strenuous and easiest aerobic activities – it’s the ideal way of slowing down the ageing process. Walking for Pleasure invites anyone who has participated in the program over the past 25 years to attend this celebration walk, followed by a light lunch at the Riverside Function Rooms at New Farm. Bookings are essential. More information may be obtained by phoning 3846 2220 or 0457 197 664 for visit website: walkingforpleasure.com

Families need certainty on Super MEMBER for Fairfax, Alex Somlyay, recently said that the Coalition will restore certainty in superannuation by ruling out any negative, unforeseen changes to superannuation in the next term. “It is clear that the Gillard Government is planning superannuation tax increases in the May Budget and if Labor is reelected, they will introduce more taxes on superannuation. When it comes to super, Wayne Swan has form having already increased super taxes by over $8 billion”, said Mr Somlyay “Labor has a $120 billion budget black hole and has refused to rule out more superannuation tax increases after the next election. Retirees, and those approaching retirement need certainty. I believe that we should be encouraging people who save for retirement rather than penalising them. Mr Somlyay said the Coalition has made a clear commitment in its Real Solutions plan there will be no negative unexpected changes to superannuation in the next term. “I repeat Tony Abbott’s pledge for the record and

so the people of the Sunshine Coast can hold me to account – a Coalition Government will not make unexpected changes that are detrimental to superannuation in the next term. “I call on the government to come clean about its plan for superannuation. My concern is that Labor will say one thing before the election on super, and do another after the election – just like Julia Gillard did with the carbon tax. Mr Somlyay said the government also needed to come clean about the low income superannuation contribution. “Labor promised a low income superannuation contribution as part of ‘spreading the benefits’ of the mining tax. Instead, the mining tax has raised next to nothing and the Budget continues to languish in deficit. There is no doubt, Labor will scrap this superannuation benefit. Mr Somlyay said the Coalition would scrap the mining tax and any ‘spending’ linked to the mining tax and that includes the low income superannuation contribution – the difference between the Coalition and

Electricity becoming a luxury in Queensland

NATIONAL Seniors Australia believes proposed increases to electricity charges will financially hurt and demoralise older Queenslanders, following a report from the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) released today. The QCA’s draft determination indicates that seniors will need to find up to an extra $250 a year to cover the increase in electricity charges.

Albany Creek National Seniors

THE Albany Creek Branch of National Seniors Australia meets on the second Friday of each month at the Albany Creek Community Centre, Ernie St. Albany Creek.5.30 pm for 6.00 pm. Visitors are most welcome, Ring Len 3264 1509. We have a number of interest groups (Some numbers are limited), reading, exercise, craft, photography, golf, coffee, dining out and movies. Some groups are open to other NSA members and visitors.

National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the impacts of the proposed increase are inescapable as the fixed component of the electricity charge contributes the largest increase. “While seniors will face up to a 26% increase in their electricity bills, heavy users of electricity will only face an 18% to 19% increase in their bill,’’ O’Neill said. “This latest increase is a further blow to seniors

who continue to bear cost of living increases. Usage patterns are very clear in showing that seniors are small and efficient users. Under these proposals, with the emphasis on increases in the fixed costs, seniors would be punished for their efficient usage patterns. Seniors will also struggle to meet two further increases in 2014 - 2015 and 2015 – 2016. Should these proposals

proceed, National Seniors will be pressing the Queensland Government to increase the electricity rebate to offset the increases. “Without a corresponding increase to the rebate, the increase announced today may lead to a rise in the number of disconnections amongst older Queenslanders who are already finding it hard to meet the increasing cost of living,’’ O’Neill said.

Labor is that we are being upfront about it. Mr Somlyay said Australians approaching retirement, retirees and indeed everyone receiving employer super wanted certainty and confidence in superannuation and the time had come for Labor to agree to no negative changes to superannuation in the next term. “Restoring confidence in superannuation is part of the Coalition’s Plan to deliver a strong and prosperous economy”.

SENIORS NEWS Hands off our super, seniors warn

OVER half of Australians aged 45-plus with knowledge of superannuation believe the rules change too often. Almost 40 per cent of these people who are still working say changes to the system are affecting their retirement plans. And of those already retired, 25 percent say the uncertainty created by those changes is affecting their retirement. The figures, buried in a wider National Seniors labour force survey published in December, come amidst speculation that superannuation may fall foul of the May federal budget. National Seniors chief executive, Michael O’Neill, says the findings are a warning to policy makers considering raiding superannuation

to fund election promises. “Superannuation is still young and its reputation ultimately rests on its ability to produce promised goods: the retirement incomes Australians have sacrificed and planned for”. “Governments can’t flip flop about and suddenly shift the goal posts as we near retirement,” said O’Neill. “Apart from undermining confidence in the system, it’s simply not fair”. For example, the deferral of the $50,000 concessional contributions cap may have given the government an extra $1.5 billion to play with in 2012, but it left many older Australians unexpectedly short changed”. “It sends a message to younger generations that

what they buy into today knowledge of the super rules 52% of those who could, on a political know something about whim, look vastly different 30 years down the track,” said O’Neill. Over 3000 Australians aged 45 to 74 were interviewed for the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre’s Barriers to Mature Age Labour Force Engagement in Australia report. It was prepared for the federal government’s Consultative Forum on Mature Age Participation. Future Autos the dealership alternative

THE older generation of motorists generally look after their cars very well, but who can blame them if they get a little twitchy when the regular service is due. On one hand they want the best possible service to keep the car running sweetly, but on the other the costs of a dealership service often represents a considerable dent in the budget. Now the dilemma is solved by Future Auto Service Centre Stafford, the dealership alternative. Future Auto Service Centre Stafford does all general and basic repairs, airconditioning, brakes, logbook servicing - everything you would expect from a dealership. The difference is this workshop offers dealership-equivalent services at a much better price.

Owner Barry Ruddick said older people generally have a reasonably good late model car but they are tired of going to a dealer and getting ripped off especially when they are on a fixed income. “And they certainly don’t want a backyardie working on their late model car because they can cause more trouble than it’s worth. “Here we keep up to speed with all the latest technology, we’re all fully trained and attend training sessions once a month to keep up with everything, the same as a dealership. “We do European, Australian, Japanese cars, and service all makes and models.” Senior customers get special treatment with a “pickup and delivery” service in the local area,

REDLAND City Council calling on all residents to clean out their old mobile stockpile A new study1 into Australian mobile phone purchasing and recycling habits shows that the demand for the latest mobile phone technology is not slowing down with over a third (37%) of Queensland (QLD) residents to buy, or think of buying a new mobile during summer sales. This mobile buy-up is giving Redland City residents the perfect opportunity to contribute to recycling the estimated 22 million unused mobile phones stored in homes across Australia. MobileMuster, the official recycling scheme of the mobile telecommunications industry, estimates that if the 22 million old mobiles no longer being used were recycled, it would divert nearly 120 tonnes of plastic from landfill and have the environmental benefit of planting over 86,000 trees or taking 4,000 cars off the road. The state of Queensland has become quite the place for outdated e-waste hoarders, with nearly two thirds (69%) of residents having one or more old mobile phones lying around at home gathering dust. Redland City Council and not-for-profit recycling program MobileMuster want all Redland City residents to recycle a record number of old mobiles following the Christmas and summer sale mobile buyup. “Redland City Council also offers a number of exciting free recycling programs at waste transfer stations

including household recyclables, cardboard and paper, polystyrene, engine oil, gas bottles, scrap metal and car batteries. Additionally, all those unwanted reusable household items in good condition can be donated to Recycle World “With many Redland residents having the New Year resolution to de-clutter and have less „stuff now is the perfect time to go into your drawers and cupboards, dig out these old phones and recycle them,” added Read.

The study also showed that three out of ten (35%) of all Queensland residents did not know or were not sure if mobiles could be re-used and made into other items. Recycled mobile materials can be simply and easily recovered, and made into new products rather than being buried in the ground where they could potentially harm the environment. By reusing the recovered materials we are reducing our demand on the earths precious natural

resources, saving energy and avoiding future greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling your old mobile through Redland City Council with MobileMuster is easy and free – either drop it off at your nearest collection point at Redland IndigiScapes Centre or pick up a replypaid, recycling satchel at any Australia Post store and post it to MobileMuster. For more information on why you should recycle your old mobile go to www.mobilemuster.com.au.

More specialised care services under new model REDLANDS’ senior citizens and people with a disability will be able to access more specialised care as Council transitions out of community care services. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said a non-government organisation (NGO) would take responsibility for Council’s community care services (formerly known as respite services) from 1 July 2013. “The vast majority of senior citizens and people with a disability are currently serviced by highly-specialised NGOs, with Council providing services to a small number of residents,” Cr Williams said. “The centre-based day services provide social interaction though structured group activities and some access to paramedical services as well as relieving their carers. “Redland City Council recognises delivery of services would be more

beneficial for clients under an alternative model that could ensure appropriate personal care support as well as access to paramedical services such as podiatry, p h y s i o t h e r a p y, occupational therapy and speech therapy are available under the one roof. “Given the increasing ageing population, it is important that we take action to do the best thing for all Redlanders in the long run,” she said. “No other Councils in Queensland provide centre-based day respite programs for their residents.” Redland City Council has notified external funding bodies, the State Government Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services and the Federal Government Department of Health and Ageing, of its decision. Cr Williams said the state and federal governments would be responsible for determining the most appropriate process for transitioning to a new service provider to take over the delivery of com-

munity care services from Council on 1 July 2013. “Council will continue to deliver community care services for seniors and people with a disability until 30 June 2013,” she said. “A smooth transition of services with minimal or no disruption to our clients and carers is paramount.” Cr Williams said Council would continue to deliver

the State Governmentfunded Home Assist Secure program that helps older people and people with a disability who wish to remain living in their homes. “Council’s Home Assist Secure services provide more than 15,000 seniors and people with a disability in the Redlands with free information and referrals about home maintenance, falls prevention,

repairs and modifications and home security,” she said “Delivery of Home Assist Secure services in the Redlands will be unchanged.” Council has successfully transitioned family day care, long day care, school-age care and camp ground operations to new providers with no loss of community access to those services.

IN October 2012 the Australian Law Reform Commission released a

SENIORS NEWS Age barriers to work discussion paper for its inquiry into legal barriers to older

Page 8 - Brisbane Seniors - March 2013

persons participating in the workforce and other productive work.

Grey Areas: Age Barriers to Work in Commonwealth Laws (ALRC DP 78, 2012) was initiated as part of the Australian Government response to population ageing with input from individuals and organisations. The ALRC was asked to consider Commonwealth legislation and related legal frameworks that either directly or indirectly impose limitations or barriers that could discourage older persons from

participating or continuing to participate in the workforce or other productive work. The Discussion Paper puts forward proposals for law reform in the areas of recruitment and employment, work (place) health and safety, insurance, social security and superannuation. The ALRC suggests the need for a combination of legislative and regulatory reform, together with measures to increase education

and awareness and address perceptions and stereotypes surrounding mature age workers. In the light of predictions that a decline in birthrates and increasing longevity indicate that in coming decades there will be fewer young people to contribute to the economic costs of supporting an ageing population, it becomes more likely it will be necessary to consider working past the present retirement age. The final report is to be delivered to the Attorney-General of Australia by 31 March 2013. The Discussion Paper can be downloaded free from the ALRC website.

Gone but not forgotten TODAY, when there is a state secondary school or college in most suburbs, it is hard to imagine that not very many years ago there were very few of these institutions in Queensland. There was Brisbane State High for the academics, Industrial High for boys wanting to become tradesmen, Domestic High for intent on home making subjects and Sate Commercial High School (SCHS) for boys and girls wanting to do office work. Of course it was also possible to go on from any of these to become teachers. Brisbane State High School is the only one of these still in operation. SCHS was at the Parliament House end of George Street where some of the buildings now form part of QUT. To those readers whose Alma Mater was SCHS, you may be interested to know that on the 20th April, 2013, some of the past pupils from across the years will be meeting at Niche Eventspaces at Stones Corner for their 22nd reunion. Anyone interested in attending can phone Nancy Bell on 3349 2232 for more information or to register for the luncheon.

BSOL winners Eric Finger, Kathleen Dempsey, Margaret Ewing and Pat Noad. (Absent was Sandra Kolisch)

BRISBANE Seniors Online (BSOL) members of the digital photography special interest group recently received their awards from the Australian Seniors Computing Clubs Association (ASCCA) 2012 Digital Photography competition held in Sydney in November. Whilst BSOL has been a member of the national body ASCCA for many years, 2012 was the first year that members of the BSOL digital photography group had participated in the competition

which is judged following the AGM and annual conference. BSOL members and management were thrilled to know that despite there being hundreds of entries from across Australia and BSOL entering for the first time, the organisation was successful in winning 4th place overall in the competition. Eric Finger received the highly commended place in the category animals with his entry named ‘Look at me’. Kathleen Dempsey achieved 2nd place in the

Pat Noad won first place for BSOL News and Views in the newsletter category. Pat who travelled to Sydney for the conference and competition winners announcements presented the certificates at the February meeting of the BSOL digital photography group. BSOL is a not-for-profit organisation that helps seniors and over 50’s use computers and the internet with confidence and safely. Volunteer computer mentors usually provide this service to learners in their own home on their own computers on a one-on-one basis. However, learners are also required for small classes held regularly at Zillmere. The BSOL Central Training Centre in the City is also available for tuition with training computers provided by BSOL as well as advanced training, digital and video photography, Apple and mentor support groups. Currently there is a shortage of learners in many areas on the north and north eastern side of Brisbane. Volunteer mentors are always welcome but particularly needed in some of the western, north western and southern suburbs of Brisbane. New Mac mentors are always welcome across Brisbane. If you want to learn computers and the internet or become a volunteer mentor, please contact BSOL on 3210 6983 or see www.bsol.asn.au

SENIORS NEWS Do you have a Will? IT may be a difficult subject to broach, but it is generally in your best interests to have a Will. A Will is a document that sets out your wishes regarding how you want your estate (assets and property owned by you) to be distributed after you pass away. Having a Will may greatly assist your relatives and loved ones with the task of distributing your estate during a difficult and emotionally distressing time. D.M. Wright & Associates Solicitors is a general law firm that practices extensively in the area of law dealing with Wills and Estates known as “Succession Law”. If you require a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney or Advance Health Directive, or you require advice in relation to the preparation of these important documents, D.M. Wright & Associates Solicitors are able to assist you. An Enduring Power of Attorney is a document that authorises another person to act on your behalf in relation to personal, financial and health matters while you are still alive but have lost the capacity to make those decisions by yourself. The person you appoint to make those

decisions is called your Attorney. Once an Enduring Power of Attorney comes into effect your Attorney can do almost anything you could do had you not lost capacity. It is very important that you obtain legal advice before making an Enduring Power of Attorney. An Advance Health Directive is often used in conjunction with an Enduring Power of Attorney. This document records how you wish to be medically treated should a particular medical circumstance arise and you are not capable of making decisions regarding the medical treatment options available to you. An Advance Health Directive helps relieve the emotional burden often felt by an Attorney who would otherwise be required to make a difficult medical decision on your behalf. D.M. Wright & Associates Solicitors offer a free 30 minute consultation for assessment of any of the issues you might have regarding these sometimes difficult and confronting matters, and after-hours consultations. D.M. Wright & Associates Solicitors are in Woolloongabba with free on-site parking. Phone 07 3844 9999.

SENIORS NEWS Like teenagers planning their debut

Christmas mystery prize raffle winners

RESIDENTS at RSL Care Inverpine Retirement Community have enjoyed fanfare and fine dining at Australia’s award winning Aria restaurant thanks to RSL Care and the generosity of local businesses who helped to fund the once-in-a-lifetime-experience for the winners of the retirement community’s Christmas mystery-prize raffle. The four winners and their guests were thrilled to swap the community bus for a limousine and coolade for chilled champagne as they travelled in

style from their quiet community in Murrumba Downs to the bustle of the Brisbane CBD to enjoy a five course lunch, an extensive wine list and all of the attention that goes hand-in-hand with pure indulgence. Inverpine Retirement Living Coordinator Lynda Williams said the trip to Aria was made possible thanks to the generosity of local businesses including Horizon Coatings, Dream Property Maintenance, Affordable Carpets and Mats, Gecko Kitchens, Swim Mart

Aspley and CB Air-conditioning who generously donated towards the special day out. “When I approached these local businesses with our idea and asked for support, they were only too happy to help. A reflection of the good relationships and continued support RSL Care Inverpine is fortunate to enjoy from our local community,” Lynda said. “Each of the four winners chose one guest to share in the day. Two residents chose their husbands and two residents chose

friends – much to the disappointment of their children who would have been happy oblige I’m sure! “As the day approached, excitement for the ‘lucky eight’ spread throughout the entire community. People talked about their outfits, their hair, the limo and the lunch, what time they would begin to get ready and what time they would return home. The gentlemen wore their suits and the ladies were given bouquets. In many ways, they were like teenagers planning their debut. “It was actually the first time that all eight of the residents had been in a limousine. And, from the looks on their faces, it didn’t disappoint. “Other residents within the community were thrilled for their friends, and as the limousine wound its way around to the front entrance with its ‘celebrity residents’ on board, many lined-up to cheer and farewell their friends.” Lynda said the enthusiasm and excitement with which the day started continued throughout the afternoon as over a period of 3 hours, residents were treated to preappetisers, an entrée, the

main course, sweets and dependants and other Australian community in members of the broader need. coffee. “At RSL Care Inverpine Retirement Community, residents are genuine friends who really care for one another. ”As much as they enjoy the monthly mystery tours, regular lunches and the activities available throughout the village, this outing was something special. “It was a day of pure indulgence. It was well deserved, very much appreciated and an experience that we will all remember and cherish for a very long time.” RSL Care Inverpine Retirement Community is located half-way between Brisbane’s CBD and the glorious Sunshine Coast, in the semi-rural suburb of Murrumba Downs. It has 151 one, two and threebedroom villas with RSL HomeCare services availIndooroopilly Shopping Centre able throughout as well as 94 residential care beds. WHEN the Yellow Cab Co began operations in Brisbane back in 1924, its objective was to build a business based on first class customer service. In the early days, taxis were its sole endeavour. For its first modest fleet, the company shows the very latest A2 Broughams. These had been especially designed for passenger service, with prototypes first seeing service on the streets of Chicago in 1915. They were quickly named “Mustard pots” because of their distinctive yellow colour. It was widely acknowledged that these wooden bodied, Continental-engine powered A2’s were, in their day, the absolute height of urban transport efficiency. Now, in a new century, almost every facet of the Yellow Cab Company has undergone total revolution. So today, Yellow Cabs fleet has grown to over 1000 vehicles in Brisbane. We have a pool of Maxi

Taxis, Silver Service, People Movers and Sedans. New too, a new way of Cab Travel with a multi million dollar roll out of New State of the art Data system. The system is designed to make taxi travel easier for consumers and drivers. Yellow Cabs prides itself on consistently delivering the latest in advance technology to ensure faster pick-up times, more direct routes, increased accountability, tighter security, identification of hail passengers, SMS on approach for booked taxis. When you book your Yellow Cab with your Mobile Phone you will be notified by Message On Approach via SMS when the cab is approaching your pick up address and Android App and iphone app available for download. Customer Service has never been more effective. Contact Yellow Cabs on 13 19 24 or yellowcab.com.au

The secret to being married for 60 years MR and Mrs. Caple were married on the 14th February1953 in a church in Auburn in Sydney. They had their reception in the church hall, and the church catered on their wonderful day. It was a large wedding with family and friends. Mrs. Gloria Caple said, “the secret of a great marriage is not to be selfish, look out for each other. Do things together, we like to go fishing together as we both enjoyed it. The best thing was going out and about with the caravan”. “We would never leave each other in anger. We would always give each other a kiss before we go to bed or go off to work. The important thing is to resolve issues. Don’t hold grudges with each other. Gloria said, “Warren is my best friend we tell each other every thing. No secrets in our marriage”. Warren said, with a big smile on his face, “the secret for men is doing as you are told”. Gloria also said “they took their vows seriously, til death do we part”. Warren is 84 Gloria is 81 and they have 3 children.

Let’s Get

Fresh Parrots putting on a performance

GLENDALE GRANNY CABINS • Independence • Security • Peace of Mind

ON March 12 Parrots in Paradise, a privatelyowned, not for profit bird theme park at Glasshouse on the Sunshine Coast, will welcome television veterinarian Dr Harry and the film crew from Better Homes and Gardens. The team will film the entire hour-long show featuring more than 300 birds performing tricks which illustrate how intelligent these birds can be. In a show with as much appeal to four-year-olds as to 104-year-olds, the parrots ride on merry-gorounds, do gymnastics, hold fashion parades, fight fires, play ten-pin bowls or basketball, ride skateboards or (Barbiesized) horses, put themselves to bed and any number of tricks responding to a signal or more frequently, they prefer the spoken word. Some respond vocally to questions and answers. Most of the birds perform-

ing are Asiatic Alexandrine parrots. “Parrot Whisperer” Dail Malins trains all the birds. The show will begin when Dr Harry arrives at 10am. People are welcome to attend (and possibly participate) on the day but as seating is limited forward booking is advisable on 5438 7719. Dail emphasised that the birds are never expected to do anything they

would not do in the wild and are trained using food as a reward. Rather the training challenges them to be mentally active. The show serves to highlight Dail’s belief that keeping highly intelligent parrots in cages all their life is cruel, and there is a need to educate people on conservation measures. Parrots in Paradise also breeds and boards parrots

and has an advisory service. Dail said about 70 per cent of their birds are surrendered for various reasons and some come in very mixed up and confused. She described how the birds are proud to show off their babies. Parrots in Paradise is in Barrs Rd Glasshouse, about 8km south of Australia Zoo. It is opened for a show for group bookings of 20 or more; if a family wants to come they can join in with a larger group. After the show visitors are welcome to stroll in the grounds and see some of the huge collection of feathered friends of all knids. For more information go to w w w. p a r r o t s i nparadise.net, Be sure to scroll to the bottom of p1 of the website to see a video of Whoppa watching his chick hatch and encouraging it with squawks of “Come on baby”.

‘Lifestyle’ a key to successful retirement living

A FOUR-YEAR old child will more often than not proudly declare that he or she is ‘almost five’ in an effort to appear ‘big’ and closer to school age. With smiles on their faces but concern in their voices parents of teenagers can be heard saying that their 16-year old is ‘going on 21’, while wondering if the intervening

years are truly lost. Young people in their 20s, all grown up and the world their oyster, travel to faraway places with backpacks as companions, or settle down and start saving for a home. The pitter-patter of tiny feet soon follows and a journey of another kind begins. Moving forward. That four-year old is to-

day 55 (where did the time go?) with children who have left the nest and precious grandkids busy with sport and music. The family home, once cosy, now echoes the quiet and, after many years, Mum and Dad’s paid jobs don’t have the same appeal they once did. The zing has zapped. Talk over a weekend cuppa turns to

changing their way of life. Retirement and the options available are discussed. ‘But we’re only 55.’ In the past, retirement typically meant leaving the workforce completely at age 65 (for men; a bit earlier for women) and spending more time puttering around the house—the original

house where the kids grew up. More recently, retirement has taken on new meaning with a fresher ‘lifestyle’ approach. Because of specific needs, downsizing amongst them, an array of appealing choices has been created and made available to those aged as young as 50 and over,

many still in the workforce if even only part-time or casually. Downsizing— selling up and moving into something smaller; more manageable and convenient—may be the dream answer in a lot of cases but needs to be carefully considered to ensure the best selections are made for individual situations. The informa-

tion within these pages has been assembled purposely to assist you, and possibly other family members, in making the right choice in the move to retirement living. Peruse the information at your convenience and please don’t hesitate to contact any of the providers for more details. They will be happy to help.

Why be tied to your home when there’s so much living to be done? AT Embracia in Glasshouse Country, easy-tomaintain villas complemented by thoughtfully landscaped courtyards mean you spend less time keeping house and more time doing the things you really enjoy. Life at Embracia also provides the added peace of mind of living in a close-knit community, where neighbours keep an eye out for each other. What’s more, each villa is connected to a 24hour emergency call service, plus, the 100 bed on-site aged care facility can provide a range of extra

assistance if needed such as meals, cleaning, linen and personal care. At Embracia in Glasshouse Country, residents are nestled in the heart of a real community. Not only is there a diverse mix of likeminded neighbours to share life’s experiences with, but there are also plenty of relaxing ways to spend an afternoon without even leaving the village grounds. The heart of the village’s social pulse is the popular on-site clubhouse, complete with practice bowling green and solar heated

ONCE you retire you might want to downsize to reduce the costs of maintenance. Some might plan to move in with the family and if so it’s important to obtain legal and financial advice to protect your interests if your needs change in future. The options include age pensioner and retirement villages, caravan parks and mobile home parks. Get advice from a reputable source about type of tenure, what services are provided, the standard of services and accommodation and residents’ rights. Great surfing for seniors

SURFING the internet sure can be a lot easier for most people than hopping on a board and surfing the waves, though both need common sense and care for best results. With almost anything able to be ‘googled’ these days, it can be fun to use your computer in the search for whatever interests you: ‘Retirement Villages’ a prime example in the case of many seniors. A site that one net surfer discovered recently through Google and wants to pass on is ‘Retirement Villages – Overview’, found via http://www.iseniority.com.au/ index.asp. With headings such as What are the Main Benefits of Retirement Village Living?; Are there any Negatives to Retirement Village Living?; How Can We Help You Find The Right Retirement Village? and ‘Retire-

ment Villages - Top 10 Tips’, the website is a treasuretrove of general (only) information; emphasising it does not offer ‘...Advice, Verification, Recommendations or Endorsements’ with readers responsible for what they take away from the site. Just a bit more regarding Google, said to be the world’s most widely used web-based search engine, it’s interesting to note that the name Google apparently originated from a misspelling of googol, a reference to the number represented by a 1 followed by onehundred zeros. The verb ‘google’ was added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary in 2006, with the attached meaning being ‘to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet.’ One learns something new every day—and much of it on Google!

Guide to retiring

PLANNING for life after work is more than just working out how much income you’ll have or the types of holidays you would like to take. Retirement planning is about giving yourself the best chance of creating a healthy and secure future to ensure your overall wellbeing and happiness. A Guide to Retiring is a comprehensive document that can help you better understand retirement. It also contains a list of useful contact details. This guide can be downloaded by going to: www.qld.gov.au/ seniors/retirement This guide will help you to start considering some of the following questions: Do you want to retire full-time? Have you considered part-time or casual work? Have you thought about activities you could do to replace work? Retirement is a great time to take your health more seriously. How will you stay fit and ac-

tive? What types of changes do you expect to occur once you retire? Are you in a good position financially? Are you supporting any children financially or otherwise? Taking into account average life expectancy, do you have enough money in savings and superannuation to support the lifestyle you want? Are you eligible for the age pension or part of the age pension? If your spouse or another family member becomes ill, are you going to be able to support them? Will your home be a suitable place to live in 5 or 10 years time? Write a list outlining what you expect from your retirement lifestyle, including where you want to live, and any travel and regular activities you would like to do.

ARPQ on the move ASSOCIATED Residential Parks Queensland Inc continues to grow and we feel privileged that through our meetings with the appropriate government department over the last year we will be having continued input into the revision of the Manufactured Homes Residential Parks Act scheduled for this year. What we seek is a balance of interest that is fair to park operators and home owners. ARPQ is also in contact with home owner associations in all other States and have had meetings with some when convenient. The idea is to form a Nation wide affiliated body of home owner associations so that by numbers alone we can and will be heard. Research shows that the combined population of retirement villages and residential parks in Queensland is near 187,000. It is important that all residential park homeowners here in Queensland join ARPQ to give credibility for this

National body and your ARPQ $10-00 PP membership will guarantee this and will give you a quality group to rely upon for your future advisory and Information service. Glenn Franklin State Chairperson for ARPQ is delighted that its members will be given an opportunity to be part of this revision process, ARPQ are the only Queensland Group that have the skill sets and experience to be an active participant of this revision process. ARPQ membership growth over the past 3 months gives credence to this comment we are flattered that we have a justified position with the Government to impart well overdue suggested changes to this Act. We invite our members and others interested in joining ARPQ this opportunity to submit any suggestions and comments re this revision if you have a suggestion please make contact with us. ARPQ has recently

completed a web site which is still growing and will give all homeowners the opportunity to read up on the latest works of the group and its future projects, we are open for your comments and ideas from all homeowners it is your web page for your usage. Our monthly newsletter can be downloaded or if we are contacted we will be only too happy to send you a copy via the post although at the moment our work load is heavy and delays are imminent. Anyone that is desirous of further discussion here can contact myself on 55352730 or the State Secretary David Paton on 38887696. The Group are currently preparing a schedule to attend member parks to give talks on all updates so if your Park is not an Associate member this will not disallow you from this schedule we will be delighted to visit your complex as a guest speaker, memberships can be arranged at the visit. Affordale housing the key to retirement freedom

TAKE a large family home, add a shortage of cash and an extra large dash of maintenance, stir all together and the outcome isn’t a recipe for a relaxing and rewarding retirement. What are the alternatives, importantly, what is the best alternative for you? Do you stay in your now oversize house with its ongoing maintenance costs and use the equity to get cash through a reverse mortgage? Do you look at a retirement village with expensive deferred management fee options? Or do you sell up, downsize, and look for a viable, affordable option that provides all the benefits of still owning a home but without the maintenance issues? And frees up capital to enjoy your retirement years? Residential parks are offering an alternate lifestyle choice for the Over 50’s. The parks are providing active and independent community living with a range of social and recreational facilities, in a gated and secure environment. GLRP Director Trent Ottawa said the ‘manufactured home park’ model was an emerging retirement living model because it offered high quality new homes without the cost of buying land. Homes are built with the potential to be relocated but are designed to be onsite for the long term. “Retirees looking to downsize can have a high quality new two or three bedroom home, pay a weekly site fee and can enjoy a range of facilities without having to worry about lawn

maintenance, rates or body corporate charges,” said Mr Ottawa. GLRP operates eight residential parks across New South Wales and Queensland. Five million Australians are aged 55 and over, an

age group that is growing at the rate of 150,000 a year. Around 80 per cent of Over 55 households own their home outright. Often they are asset rich, but cash poor. “Manufactured homes parks have the potential to provide existing homeowners access to their equity, and are a genuine alternative to reverse mortgages or the high fees of traditional retirement villages,” Mr Ottawa said. “If retirees want a lifestyle change, or desire a smaller home, then moving into a residential park offers an affordable viable option. The community aspect of a residential park provides the potential for a very active social life and the benefits of neighbourly security. “Residents enjoy all the benefits of owning their own home without the maintenance time and costs. “Not owning land frees up capital, and provides the independence to come and go as they

please to pursue travel or all the things they want to achieve in retirement.” For more information please call 1300 361 311 or register your interest on www.gatewaylifestyle. com.au

Retirement for new beginnings

Are you ready to retire? RETIREMENT is like closing one door and opening another into a new world of experiences. Look at retirement as an opportunity to seek out fresh challenges in a different area of paid or unpaid work, to learn new skills, help others, travel, keep fit or take up studies you have never had time for, until now. Planning your future direction with an accredited financial adviser is critical, not only for finances. It’s better to do this when you are fit and well and can make well-informed decisions. Are you ready to retire? Are there other goals you want to achieve? What are your financial circumstances? Are you eligible for the full or part-age pension? What will you do for the rest of your life? People react differently to retirement. Once the euphoria has evaporated the honeymoon period can be followed by disillusionment or even depression, although most people adapt well. One of the best ways to help adjust is to develop meaningful activities and a purposeful routine.

A meaningful activity helps replace the sense of purpose that may be lost after leaving the work force. There are many volunteer organisations happy to have your assistance but how much time do you want to give? What organisations or groups appeal to you - service clubs, environmental groups, sports clubs, school or church groups, the list is long. Some travel companies specialise in tours for older people or cater for specific needs or disabilities. Keeping your mind active is important. Consider the University of the Third Age (U3A) or Open Learning and Adult Community Education, do some courses, learn a new language, join the library. Can you continue the recreational activities you enjoy, or do you have skills you can pass on to others? It’s never too late to become physically active - check your local gym or council community programs. Walking costs nothing, fits into a daily routine and be done with other people.

Assisted living at home

IT’S no secret that home is where the heart is and we all want to remain in the comfort and security of our own home for as long as possible. The Federal Government has rolled out an extra 40,000 in-home care packages over the next five years in order that more elderly people can do exactly that. For many people, living in the comfort of their own home is an important part of growing older, but for some older people this may become difficult without extra help. The number of in-home care packages is likely to be insufficient, as our population continues to age, but it’s a start. Prospective users of the service need to arrange an official assessment by a government-approved aged-care assessment team (ACAT) and having an assessment will enable the individual to apply for a subsidised home-care package. A number of service providers are available to provide care at home with activities such as carrying groceries, running errands, transport to medical ap-

Page 28 - Brisbane Seniors - March 2013

pointments, help with making phone calls, writing letters, reading and assisting with household responsibilities like cooking and cleaning. As well as this, of course, carers can provide personal care. These services help seniors to live full, independent and dignified lives within the comfort of their own homes, providing care that enriches their lives and helps them maintain the highest possible level of independent living. Even someone with early dementia can continue with assistance to live independently. The carer can help manage potential risks around the home and reduce early entry to hospital or residential care which can be quite stressful for an elderly person. Home care has the benefit of familiar internal and external surroundings and familiar routines which aid in memory retention. For information about using in-home care services go to the ‘Home Care’ section of www.agedcareonline.com.au or to www.health.qld. gov.au/hacc/.

The “Then & Now” story of long time residents of Tranquil Waters PHIL & Dorothy moved toTranquil Waters in February 2002. They said then “Tranquil Waters is the perfect location for a wonderfully relaxed retirement lifestyle”. Both Phil & Dorothy immediately set about making sure they and the other residents enjoyed all the wonderful facilities available at that time. Phil aptly named the Community Centre “our resort facilities by the sea”. “Free” activities include indoor bowls, line dancing classes, billiards, darts, cards, mahjong, chess, art, craft, library, computer lessons, spa, gym, and full kitchen facilities and entertainment area for residents’ special private functions. Organised by Phil & Dorothy, Friday night happy hour and Sunday evening dinners soon became legendary at the Village. At the time, Phil & Dorothy said “we’ve had some great times

over the years and it’s exciting to anticipate the future”. They both say you can’t beat the fabulous location, great social atmosphere, medical help a call away, time to do what we want to do ie no mowing, gardening, house repairs, just enjoy ourselves, bay breezes, always something to do and someone to do it with, safe and secure, share a joke or a chat with friendly staff and Phil adds “did I say, not having to mow the lawn?” Seven years on which is the “Now” of our story, Phil & Dorothy say “we know our dreams have come true” and as for not being able to beat the many and varied facilities and lifestyle, heated swimming pool, kayaking, hairdresser, podiatrist, Village bus, resident workshop and of course let’s not forget the wonderful residents who have moved to Tranquil Waters over

Phil & Dorothy

the years, they say that the intervening years have proved that their expectations have not only been met but have been surpassed beyond their wildest dreams. Phil & Dorothy continue to play an important role at Tranquil Waters, taking on more and more over the years and obviously enjoying and thriving on all aspects of Village life. 31 Thompson Street, Victoria Point. Seniors consider retirement villages for community connection NEW research shows older people are more likely to consider moving to a retirement village if they feel disconnected within their own neighbourhood. And it seems the baby boomer generation, those aged between 55-64 years, are the group most likely to consider making that move. The findings were reported in the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre report entitled “Relocation to a Retirement Village: Who Con-

siders Relocation and What are People Looking for?” National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said while many people wanted to age in place, it was not possible for everyone. “Ageing at home may not suit those people who live in neighbourhoods where they feel unsafe or disconnected from their community,” O’Neill said. “This research suggests that people considering moving into a retirement village may want to do so

for that sense of community and social cohesion which is thought to exist in retirement villages,” he said. “However some people from less cohesive neighbourhoods may not have the financial resources to move to a retirement village.” O’Neill said it was important for people considering a move into a retirement village to read the fine print and know what they’re signing up to. “Before you buy, always get inde-

pendent advice and understand the pros and cons of retirement village living,” he said. “Look out for extra charges and fees that can come as shock, even to those retirees who would consider themselves comfortably off.” The research found those aged 55-64 years of age said they would consider a move to a retirement village so that ‘their family wouldn’t have to look after them’ and in case they needed to ‘find assis-

tance in the case of declining health’. Concerns about a loss of independence and a lack of privacy were seen as the negatives when considering moving into a retirement village. The report also found that luxury services such as heated swimming pools and gym appear the least important features, whereas a desire to maintain independence and have outdoor living space were considered more important.

Travel is an exciting part of retirement PLANNING a holiday - ensure it remains fun by being prepared and planning for your trip. Smartraveller is the Australian Government’s travel advisory service and is a good place to start when you’re planning a holiday, especially if it’s going to take you overseas. This site includes safe travel tips such as: • organising travel insurance • checking expiry on passports as most countries require a minimum of 6 months before expiration before they let you in the country • checking to see whether you need to organise a visa • organising a supply of any medicines you take for your entire trip and check that the country you are travelling to will accept the medication you are bringing - your doctor may need to provide you with a letter • immunising yourself, if necessary, before you leave to prevent illnesses which may be common in other countries • protecting your valuables by using locks for bags and organising how you will carry your money and passport • finding out if there are any local customs or laws different from home that you need to follow while overseas • taking the stress out of your trip by booking and confirming your accommodation in advance; making sure you know how to get help overseas if something doesn’t go to plan - give a copy of your itinerary to a friend or family member who will be able to help you back at home. Register your travel details with Smartraveller before you leave if you are travelling overseas.

Shop in comfort at Underwood Marketplace AIR-CONDITIONED, with everything on one level and undercover, superb parking right at the front entrance and all the amenities you could need - we’re talking here about Underwood Marketplace, the place where shopping, especially for seniors, is a breeze. With so many retirement villages in the near vicinity it helps that there is a wonderful medical centre and a nearby chemist who is prepared to accept phone or email requests to fill prescriptions on their computer system to save

you waiting. The pharmacist will also do up Webster Packs to reduce the costs of packaging. The centre management also provides a wheelchair if needed, simply phone ahead to have someone meet you with the chair. Seniors are particular and they want good service, affordable shopping and enjoyment, which often comes in the form of scrumptious morning teas. No worries there, with a choice of The Coffee Club, Gloria Jean’s, MIchel’s Patisserie,

Donut King and a lovely variety of food in the Food Court. Good service? No need to travel far when two of Australia’s biggest banks, ANZ and Commonwealth are located in the centre and what the centre management promises is “the world’s best carwash” will take over the job of cleaning your jalopy while you take your time over your coffee and cake. And affordable! Many retailers have joined in the Seniors Card government scheme of discounts for seniors; Choice is popular for $2 shopping. The fruit and veggie store is top of its class.

Which leaves more enjoyment to come fashion maybe? Noni B and Big W cater really well for mature tastes and so does Baretrap for footwear. All said, the place for all your needs is Underwood Marketplace, centrally located on the corner of Beenleigh and Logan Rds, for comfortable shopping in all weathers. The centre management is always thinking about boosting the entertainment factor and on occasions school groups have been invited to perform. They want to hear what shoppers, especially seniors, would like to see in the centre.

Is Chem-Dry the solution for you? IF your carpets, upholstery or mattresses need cleaning, look no further than Southside ChemDry. Covering Logan and Redlands, Southside ChemDry is operated by husband and wife team Garry and Helen Thompson. Helen has been an important part of the business for five years while Garry will soon celebrate a milestone 25 years as a franchisee. Both are committed to quality service and know what they’re doing. Their work is fully guaranteed. Chem-Dry is a revolutionary cleaning system using non-toxic effervescent carbonating solutions copied from Mother Nature. Carpets are deep-cleaned yet dry casually in the short space of one to two hours. This means little disruption to your day and less stress in your life. Great cleaning results are obtained without soaps, detergents or harsh chemicals and there’s no risk of shrinkage or rotting. Southside Chem-Dry Carpet Cleaning provides cleaning services for residential homes, nursing homes, units and apartments as well as commercial properties including offices, hotels and shops, and will tailor its service to suit your needs. Garry explains that ‘most people use Chem-Dry about every 12 months but if you have pets, or lots of visitors, we are able to offer the service more often. It’s important to keep in mind that dirty carpets wear out much more quickly than clean carpets.’ He continues ‘We don’t just clean the tips of the carpet like some cleaners do, nor do we pressure wash the dirt down below the surface only to have it reappear as it dries. Our clients have asked us to remove the dirt and unhealthy elements from their carpets and that is exactly what we do.’ Southside Chem-Dry can be contacted by calling 07 3805 3066; mobile 0407 571 061, or by visiting www.southsidechemdry.com.au. Seniors readers will be interested to know that fit Garry is also a guide on yearly eight-day treks along Papua New Guinea’s Kokoda Track. This year will mark the 10th time Garry has walked the 96 km trail, with his fascinating story to be told in an upcoming issue of Seniors newspaper. Watch this spot!

Carter. Carole, a native of Nîmes in southern France, along with her husband and ten year old son, settled on the Gold Coast last year. Formerly a member of Madrid

Accueil in Spain, she has seen the benefits of the Accueil concept. Brisbane Accueil was officially launched in Brisbane on 2 February when the management team, the French Consul General, Monsieur Eric Berti, Sir Llew and Lady Edwards, the honorary French consul for Queensland and about 60 guests enjoyed an evening of French wines and patisseries. On the Gold Coast, activities begin in February with coffee mornings, cultural and sporting outings and a cocktail party. (Full details at http:// www.brisbaneaccueil.org/ or visit their Facebook page http:// www.facebook.com/#!/ AccueilGoldCoast .) “Our team is here to accommodate all French speaking persons and francophiles moving to or living on the Gold Coast,” Carole said. “Volunteer district hosts

and hostesses will provide essential information concerning their neighbourhood or work area.” “Our online guide is an important resource, one which will promote fast and comprehensive integration into the local community.” Andrew, born in Melbourne but long time Paris resident, emphasises the importance of a support network when moving into a new cultural and language environment. “Accueil associations regularly organise cultural events, gettogethers and social activities to help members understand and adapt to their new environment, while continuing to stay in touch with French language and culture.” “Just as important,” he says, “are the activities organised to help the French speaking community discover or deepen their understanding of the Australian lifestyle as well as enjoy the local attractions.” As well, Accueil aims to organise activities for the spouses of expatriate employees to help them get out into the community. It also has dedicated activities to guide French speakers looking for work as well as students attending Australian schools. Haemorrhoids – A Pain in the Butt! HAEMORRHOIDS, piles whatever you might call them..... they can be embarrassing to talk about, but they are often extremely painful. It’s important to get help. They are similar to varicose veins, caused by genetic weakness of veins, excessive pressure in the venous circulation, pregnancy, long periods of standing or sitting, and heavy lifting. They can be felt as itching, burning, painful, inflamed, irritated, swollen, bleeding or seepage. For an effective, cooling treatment, I usually recommend a soothing aloe vera gel, such as HemoClin gel (available from pharmacies), which can reduce pain and each of these symptoms.

This gel supports the natural healing process, neutralizes harmful microbes and conditions the tissue. However, the best treatment for haemorrhoids is to prevent them from occurring altogether. A high-complex carbohydrate diet, rich in dietary fibre, is important, along with protective foods like blackberries, cherries and blueberries which will strengthen vein structures. In summary, the secret to prevention is sensible food choices and support for the blood vessel walls. Source: Gerald Quigley, Medical Herbalist and Community Pharmacist.

Call for local action to improve bowel cancer survival rates BOWEL Cancer Australia is urging local action after a new report found the country’s second most common cancer has the worst survival rate of our four most common cancers. While prostate, breast and melanoma patients share five-year survival rates of about 90 per cent, rates for bowel cancer patients languish at a comparatively low 66 per cent. Bowel Cancer Australia chief executive Julien Wiggins said simple things in local communities can make a

difference to people’s attitudes and knowledge of bowel cancer. “We’re asking local communities throughout the country to join The Bowel Movement by taking three simple steps. 1. Talk – reduce the embarrassment by talking with family and friends about signs, symptoms and testing for bowel cancer; 2. Test – take a bowel cancer screening test, especially if you’re over 50. 3. Tell – share your family’s medical history with close relatives. “Research we conducted among 1,000 people aged 40-70 found just over half knew the signs and symptoms of a disease which can be treated successfully in approximately 90 per cent of cases, if detected early. So, we’re asking people to talk. Friends and family are a key source of information.” “The most important thing people aged 50+ can do to prevent and detect bowel cancer early is take a simple, painless FOB (Faecal Occult Blood) test at least every two years, as medical guidelines recommend.” “There was some positive news in the 50-70 age group as 73 per cent knew the risk of bowel cancer increased from age 50 and 82 per cent knew that home screening tests for bowel cancer were available. Despite this, less than half said they would definitely take a bowel cancer test in the next couple of years.” “If you’re 50, 55 or 65, the Government will send you a free kit. For everyone else, talk to your GP or grab a BowelScreen® Australia test kit. The kits are available from many community pharmacies for a total cost of less than $40.” “Being such a common cancer more than 14,000 Australians diagnosed with bowel cancer every year - it’s quite likely you know someone in your community who is affected..” “Survival rates could improve if cases were detected earlier. It’s as simple as that and so is joining The Bowel Movement,” said Mr Wiggins. Visit bowelcanceraustralia.org for more information and to join The Bowel Movement.

Burnie Brae is going from strength to strength FROM its humble beginnings as a Senior Citizens Centre in 1984, Burnie Brae at Chermside has expanded to become a vibrant hub of active social, leisure and health activities, plus home assistance, care and community services for over 50’s. Membership to Burnie Brae has never been better with many joining to benefit from the low cost fitness activities and organized day and half day trips which provide a hassle free outing for members with an all inclusive price which includes transport. Healthy Connections over 50’s Exercise Clinic is a recent addition to Burnie Brae that has been of great benefit to members looking for an affordable, safe and professionally supervised exercise venue. It also provides special programs for people re-

covering from chronic disease and injury rehabilitation. This year, the Centre has plans to conduct educational sessions for Seniors on a range of topics. The first of these interactive sessions was well attended and provided useful information on Powers of Attorney with attendees having opportunity to ask guest speaker and local lawyer, Judy Smith, questions about this important topic. The second of this series, The Facts about Wills, will be held at the Centre on Wednesday 6th March at 9.30. For catering purposes, bookings for this event are essential. Reading for mental fitness OLD age is no longer a time to sit back and watch the world go by. It’s more important than ever to keep learning and stay active after retirement. As the older population continues to grow science looks for innovative ways to treat the diseases of old age, ways that include how proper diet, exercise and thinking activities may slow dementia. Commentator Mary L. KIng (suite 101.com/ mary-king) says that boosting brain power by engaging in cognitive skills helps the brain build resistance that may slow the disease. Just as physical exercise improves circulation, mental exercise strengthens the mind.

Reading, solving word puzzles or taking part in an intellectual conversation may slow the effects of memory loss. An active brain is better equipped to resist disease. Increased blood flow from both physical and mental exercise improves the connections between nerve cells. A seven-year study of 2000 people over 65 found that those who engaged in high levels of reading, physical exercise or just talking with friends reduced their risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 38 per cent.* When looking for gifts for an older person try card games, board games, word puzzle books, games such as chess, bridge, scrabble,

checkers and trivia games to stimulate the brain. Reading material like National Geographic, Reader’s Digest and Time Magazine all cover current events and popular topics. Other options are learning a new language or getting involved in local politics, or joining a bridge club to start socialising with other elders. Socialising it seems increases short term cognitive skills and builds improved longer term cognitive abilities, even if conducted by phone or email. *The World’s Greatest Treasury of Health Secrets” 2008. Make the most of your leisure NOW that you’re not locked into a working week, how will you fill in all those beautiful hours at your disposal? Here are some suggestions but don’t stop there, the possibilities are many and varied so put down the remote and explore those possibilities. Fishing is a good start, maybe you could learn to catch a barra! Write your life story and

recall the years when you were growing up, your family will love it. Luxury travel options are often available and cheaper in the off-season or during school holidays. You can set up a home gym with a yoga mat, a fitness ball, some weights and fitness DVDs. Mentor a student and use your skills to help a younger person improve

their opportunities. If you’ve always enjoyed spectator sport, maybe you could offer to help out at the local club. Start a hobby like gardening, or craftwork like knitting, quilting, scrapbooking or jewellery making. Men’s Sheds now established in many suburbs have provided much-valued companionship. Hardware stores often run DIY home improvement classes on everything from gardening to tiling your bathroom floor. In fact, if there’s something you are interested SEASONS Waterford West Care Community will fund- in, you can usually find a raise for Bundaberg flood victims through a dinner class teaching it. function on Wednesday 6 March. The crisis in Bundaberg became personal when residents Warren and Gloria Caple’s son Warren and his family were in the centre of the devastation. Seasons’ staff and other residents were quick to rally support and came up with the fundraising evening where 150 guests will enjoy a seafood banquet and entertainment. The cost is $60 per person, with additional fundraising including raffles of a night at Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast, a flat screen television and a DVD player. All proceeds will be donated to Foodbank, which is helping Bundaberg flood victims with supplies. Warren Caple said many elderly were amongst the thousands who were displaced and still without homes. Two weeks after the worst of the event he had only just located dear friends, a couple in their nineties. “My wife and I have been looking everywhere and nobody knew where they were,” said Warren. “The independent living facility where they lived went totally under and it turned out they were relocated prior to the registering of names at the various evacuation centres. ‘We are just happy they are safe, but it is tough on our friends and many like them.” Warren said he would ‘do his darnedest’ to get to Seasons Waterford West for the fundraising dinner. To give your support and book your seat for the event on 6 March, contact Seasons Care Communities on 1300 506 116. The evening begins at 5.30pm with champagne on arrival, and dinner commences at 6pm.

Spot the difference - targeted anti-age spot treatment

SUN spots, liver spots or age spots – call them what you will, they appear on most people at some stage. Age spots are very common in adults over 40 and up to 90 percent of fair skinned people over 60 get them. Spotner, fresh from Europe, targets and erases age spots and protects from further damage. The Spotner pen is now available in pharmacies for your face and décolletage and also for your hands and body. Spotner contains a powerful mix of botanical extracts, alpha arbutin, alpha--hydroxy acids (AHA’s), Salicylic acids (BHAs) and lactic acid to help encourage the regeneration of the skin without causing irritation. Unlike creams and lotions, its precise

Dry eye problem NO doubt about it, these recent holidays have provided some really hot and dusty weather. Sunglasses are good for your eyes, but they don’t help much for “dry eyes”. Our eyes need to be well lubricated with a film of tears and if there is insufficient lubrication “dry eye” will result. This condition will occur if you don’t blink enough or there is insufficient tear production or even an out of balance tear fluid consistency. Symptoms of dry eye include; stinging or burning sensation, blurred vision, sensitivity to light and difficulty in wearing contact lenses that are not correctly fitted. Also, would you believe, staring at a computer screen for long periods of time is another symptom. As with most things medical, if you are not happy, go to your doctor. Never try to treat yourself and never use somebody else’s prescription medication. Courtesy SABOT Feb, 2013

Get into the swim A SWIM in the hot weather does a lot more than make you feel refreshed. Swimming burns up the calories, around 11 per minute, and the cardiovascular exercise speeds up the metabolism so you continue to burn calories well after you’ve left the pool. Swimming also offers resistance training because the water acts like a resistance band or light weights that pull against your body and help to build muscle. Swimming works every muscle in your body, giving you one of the best overall workouts compared to other forms of exercise.

Consumers Benefit from Food Label Changes

A new standard to give consumers confidence that nutrition content claims and health claims on food labels and in advertising are backed by scientific evidence became law on 18th January 2013. Announcing the new standard, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King said it aims to support industry innovation and help consumers make informed food choices. “For example, with a ‘good source of calcium’ nutrition content claim, the food will need to contain at least the minimum amount of calcium specified in the Standard,” Ms King said. “Health claims, such as ‘calcium is good for bones and teeth’, are only permitted on foods that meet specific eligibility criteria, including nutrition criteria. “There are more than 200 pre-approved food-health relationships to support a health claim or food businesses can self-substantiate according to the Standard.” Ms King said food businesses have three years to meet the requirements of the new Standard 1.2.7 – Nutrition, Health and Related Claims. “Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and state and territory government agencies will continue to work with the food industry during the implementation period to ensure the system is operating effectively and food labels are compliant,” Ms King said. In addition to the gazettal of the health claims standard, country of origin labelling has been extended in Australia only to include unpackaged beef, sheep and chicken meat. Businesses have six months to meet the requirements. “Mandating additional country of origin labelling requirements ensures consumers are provided with access to this information consistently across the retail sector,” Ms King said. Ministers responsible for food regulation agreed to these changes in December 2012.

The importance of exercise!!! WALKING can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at £2000 per month. My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. Now she’s 97 years old and we don’t know where the hell she is. The only reason I would take up exercising is so that I could hear heavy breathing again. I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 quid. Haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there. I have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I’m doing. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them. If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country. And last but not least: I don’t exercise because it makes the ice jump right out of my glass.

PERHAPS a better question is how long will your mattress continue to provide the comfort and support you need to assure the best night’s sleep? How long your mattress will last depends on many factors. Generally a mattress used regularly should last five to seven years. People’s bodies change over time, and their need for adequate comfort and support increases as they get older. Studies show that 87% of people who purchase a new mattress are satisfied with their choice and its impact on the quality of their sleep. Mattress technology is constantly advancing, and it’s worthwhile to visit a store and take the SLEEP test to see what’s new in better sleep and comfort.

Ageism in travel insurance A REPORT has been released examining whether older Australians face age discrimination when purchasing travel insurance. The report, in 2012, ‘Ageism in Travel Insurance’, summarises the key findings from a survey conducted by National Seniors and COTA Australia regarding members’ views and experiences with travel insurance. The survey, conducted between May and June, shows those aged 70 years and over are more likely to cite difficulties

in obtaining travel insurance or affordable travel insurance as a major reason for ceasing to travel overseas. Almost a third of respondents (32%) reported they have had to pay higher travel insurance premiums because of their age. Some of the key findings also included: Less than half of the respondents (44%) ‘shopped around’ for the best travel insurance deal. More than half of the respondents (53%) received ‘widely differing’ quotes for the cost of travel insurance, with most reporting a difference of between 11 and 50%).

Almost two-thirds of respondents (63%) have difficulty in understanding how any age restrictions operate after reading through information provided by insurers in Product Disclosure Statements, brochures and websites. One in 20 respondents (5%) reported they had a travel insurance claim unexpectedly denied. You can download National Seniors Australia and COTA’s Ageism in Travel Insurance Survey 2012on the internet by going to: nationalseniors.com.au/ icms_docs/ 131981_0812_IRAG_ AgeismInTravel InsuranceReport.pdf.

Trouble free travel with a checklist WHETHER you are heading overseas or travelling around Australia, it pays to be organised, especially when it comes to technology. It is important to ensure that you have packed your camera charger as there would be nothing worse than realising after a fun filled day that you have left it at home. Add the charger to your checklist. Make sure you’ve got everything you need downloaded onto your device/s before you go i.e. documents, photos, music, movies. If you are travelling overseas this will save on expensive roaming charges and you can access everything even if there’s no coverage. Research your travel itinerary before you go which will save precious time when you arrive at your destination. You can download useful apps, such as Tripadvisor, TouristEye and WiFi Finder to assist you. There are travel apps such as Tripit. If you forward your holiday details such as flight information, hotel reservations, rental cars, tour bookings they will consolidate it for you into one very useful itinerary. You can then access it offline while travelling. Lay out each device you’re taking and doublecheck that you’ve got all of the cords/chargers that go with them. Take some spare memory cards and a USB stick. Also make sure you’ve got the correct adaptor for your destination. If you are unsure, simply buy a global adaptor - these work in most major countries. ‘Let Us Entertain You’ . . . About “Jay ‘n Doll”

Jay’n Doll perform at Cross Timbers Opry - Stephenville, Texas, USA

“JAY ‘n Doll” aka. Jay and Carole Jacobs, is a duo comprising a Texan and a Queenslander. They are Country/ Western with a little bit of Blues, Folk and Pop. Jay, born into a Texas country music family, appeared as a “regular” on “The Hayloft Jamboree” in Brownwood, Texas and with “The Texas Saddlebusters” on “Big State Jamboree” in Abilene, Texas. While in the US. Navy, Jay was a member of his ship’s recreational band, “The Oz Trio”. The “Oz” band performed goodwill shows in Hawaii, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan and the Gold Coast in Australia for 4KQ Radio. Carole taught dancing at Dick and Nola Orchard’s Studio in Brisbane and loved to sing at home and at parties. She developed her love of country music from living in Texas for twenty-one years. Jay and Carole combine country style waltzes, two-steps and hoe-downs which they learned as a young couple from fiddlers and pickers in the backwoods and country towns of Central Texas, with funky blues, western swing and country boogie. Jay ‘n Doll blend blues, country, blue-

grass, swing, and folk-rock influences together into an evocative soundscape. Their music is a journey from Country Music’s Golden Age through to Contemporary Country. With stomp-box and extra instruments on performance stands (banjo/acoustic guitar), they deliver an engaging and authentic performance. They have been working on their CD album for the past three years, travelling to Nashville in 2009, 2010 and 2011, with post-recording tours of some of Texas’ Oprys. Their CD “Mixed Emotions” is a mix of originals and a few covers, and can be purchased from internet stores including “iTunes”, “Amazon.com” and “CD Baby”. The CD is being promoted on local station 100.3 (Bay Breeze radio), Bundaberg Radio 96.3fm, Melbourne Radio 96.5fm, Newcastle Radio 2NURfm while Logan radio has included songs from the CD on their playlist. Internationally songs will be played on radio stations in the USA and Europe. Jay plays guitar, harmonica, fiddle and banjo; Carole plays bass and “stompie”. They both sing solo and duet.

An Invitation to Inspire & Ignite ON Friday March 8, VARIETY, the Children’s Charity invites you to a breakfast celebrating International Women’s Day 2013, where you will hear from an inspirational star who will ignite your passion in life and work. Introducing Fairland Ferguson, one of the stars of the internationally acclaimed theatrical production, Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse. Hers is a story of defying the odds after being told she would never walk again following a climbing fall. It is a story of true empowerment and self-belief; it will inspire. Fairland’s story of sheer bravery and passion even reached the producers at Disney Pixar, and she became one of the muses for the hit 2012 hit animated movie, BRAVE. They even share the same locks of fiery red hair! Now Brisbane has the opportunity to share her journey – exclusively

at VARIETY’s Inspire & Ignite breakfast event. Fairland will be introduced by leading Brisbane publicist Kath Rose, with her own story of passion and empowerment; peppered with tales of bucking trends, and of being heard. Inspire and Ignite – International Women’s Day Breakfast, Friday 8th March, 7am to 9am at the Hilton Brisbane, 190 Elizabeth Street, Brisbane. Tickets are $65 each (includes breakfast). Visit www.variety.org.au/inspireandignite to buy your tickets! For more information contact Georgie Benham; georgie@varietyqld.org.au; 07 3907 9300. A student asked, ‘What gender is ‘computer’?’ Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether ‘computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men’s group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be of the feminine gender (‘la computadora’), because: No one but their creator understands their internal logic. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your income on accessories for it. The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (‘el computador’), because: In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little longer, you could have got a better model. The women won.

SENIORS NEWS Whatever happened to …Digby Wolfe

By Kevin Trask

Stafford Garden Club

DIGBY Wolfe began writing and performing in several comedy television series in England and worked with comedy legends such as Ronnie Corbett and Spike Milligan.

He moved to Australia in 1959 where he became very popular in television variety shows such as Curtain Call, Revue 61 and Revue 62, which featured popular singers such as Ted Hamilton.

Revue 61 won a Logie Award for Best National Variety Show and Digby won individual Logie Awards for Best Male Personality. In 1964 Digby went to America to look for work opportunities. One day he was invited to lunch at Universal Studios and the room was filled with famous Hollywood stars. In the next booth was Cary Grant who overheard Digby talking. He tapped him on the shoulder, struck up a conversation and said, “English?” to which Digby replied “Yes”, then Cary turned back to Cy Coleman and said “Maybe this bloke would do it.” Within an hour Digby was standing in front of an orchestra on a huge soundstage recording the Cy Coleman composition Pass me By. The song was used in the film Father Goose and Digby Wolfe provides the singing voice for Cary

Grant. How’s that for being in the right place at the right time! Digby later learned that the singer, who was supposed to sing the song in the film, had been in a car accident that day. Digby Wolfe had guest roles in comedy series such as The Munsters, Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. This was mainly because Digby had written the episodes and had included small roles for himself. In 1967 George Schlatter and Digby presented a format for a new television show, which was an hour of pure comedy, to the NBC network. There was little interest, but an hour after they had left, they were called back to talk over the show with two new comedians who had just been hired by the network. Dan Rowan and Dick Martin loved the concept and Laugh In was born. Laugh In went into the top ten American television shows within weeks and launched the career of many famous performers. Goldie Hawn, Arte Johnson, Ruth Buzzi and Lily Tomlin owe their success to Laugh In. The show consisted of a series of very fast sketches with ongoing “catch phrases” such as “ Sock it to me”, “You bet your bippy” and “Here comes

the Judge.” Guests included John Wayne and President Nixon. Digby was one of the principal writers for show. Digby’s proudest moments was going up onstage with the Laugh In team to receive an Emmy Award. Laugh In finished in 1973 and Digby went on to work with performers such as Cher, Shirley McLain and John Denver on various projects. In 1976 Digby returned to Australia to host the television series This is your Life where personalities such as Leonard Teale and Maggie Tabberer were handed the big red book. In his later life Digby Wolfe worked in America as a University drama teacher and loved working with young students. In 2003 he was awarded “Teacher of the Year” at the University of New Mexico. Sadly Digby Wolfe passed away from cancer in 2012 at the age of eighty three. He was survived by his wife Patricia Mannion. Hope you can tune into Walter Williams and I on 4BC for our weekly segments The Time Tunnel Thursdays at 10.00 pm and Memories Are Made of This - Mondays at 10.00 pm. We can also be heard on the internet at www.4bc.com.au
