The Banking Community Greensburg is home to three banks, all of which rebuilt after the tornado. Not only did each bank go above and beyond in being available to their customers immediately after the storm, but their people were instrumental in providing leadership to the rebirth of the local business community, post-tornado. Each bank has been rebuilt as a model of sustainability. Centera Bank has five locations in southwestern Kansas; their local vice-president advocated for designing to LEEDŽ standards for their new building which achieved LEED Certification in early 2011. Greensburg State Bank is a locally-owned business that has been in operation since 1924. They rebuilt on their original site around their vault, which remained standing after the tornado. The Peoples Bank has a presence in three southern Kansas counties, and their senior branch manager in Greensburg played an important role in the greening of their new facility. Each bank’s energy usage was studied by the National Renewable Energy Lab: Centera is 29% more efficient than a typical exis ex existing isting building of its size; Greensburg State Bank, 36%; Peoples, 51%.
