Dear Alumni and Friends of Greensboro College: In the 1989 movie “Steel Magnolias,” the character Truvy says, “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” And it is a time of laughter through tears at Greensboro College. We are now celebrating something old and something new. The academic year 20162017 marks the centennial of the beautiful fountain in front of Main Building, and you’ll read about that in this issue. You’ll also read that our accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges, has just reaffirmed Greensboro College’s accreditation for 10 years. We stand on solid ground once again, and we celebrate that.

Think critically. Act justly. Live faithfully.

But as we do, we also recognize that a leader in our reaccreditation effort is gone. Phyllis Bowman ’01, the college’s assistant vice president for academic services and chief assessment officer and a college staff member for 27 years, passed away in April, just weeks after the accreditors’ favorable on-site review of the college. So we mourn her in this issue even as we celebrate the achievement to which she contributed so much. We mourn the death of Allen Kivett ’60, the first male student to complete his entire course of study at the college. He began working for the college in Communications and Admissions almost immediately after finishing his classes, eventually serving as Director of Admissions for more than a decade and as president of the Alumni Board. We also mourn the death of Dr. Barnes Tatum, Jefferson Pilot Professor of Religion and Philosophy Emeritus, who passed away Aug. 26. The outpouring of grief and fond remembrances from alumni and colleagues who knew him during his 36 years on the faculty illustrates how powerful the impressions our professors make can be – Greensboro College at its best. In this issue, we also recognize and celebrate the donors whose generosity to the college during 2015-2016 made much of what we do possible. We are grateful once again for their support and love, and we hope you join us in thanking them. Carolyn and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! With Pride,

Outgoing Board Chair Walter L. Newton Receives Honorary Degree

In the community he has served as president of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce, and he and his wife of almost 37 years, Denise Dilts “Dennie” Newton, have been involved in fundraising for Greensboro College, the church and the arts. Their strong support of the college over the years, financially and in kind, has ranged from scholarships for students to a new roof for the physicalplant building.

Self-described “shop rat” Walter Logan Newton reached an academic pinnacle May 7 when Greensboro College conferred the honorary doctor of business degree upon him during the college’s Commencement ceremony. Newton, of Bahama, N.C., will rotate off the Greensboro College Board of Trustees Jan. 1 after having served on the board since 1995 and having chaired it since 2011. When Newton became chair, the college faced existential threats from its accreditor, the U.S. Department of Education, and even its own bank. Now, the college has emerged from those crises and is in good standing with all three institutions; moreover, its enrollment has grown solidly for two consecutive years.

His ties to the college date to the 1920s, when some of his mother’s cousins attended here. His mother graduated from the college in 1943 and later served on the Board of Trustees. A native of Durham, N.C., Newton graduated from high school in 1974 and went to work for the business begun by his father, Newton Instrument Co. He had various responsibilities with the company, including engineering, operations, and finance, before becoming president in 1990. While working, he continued his education at Danville Community College and Durham Technical Community College, taking courses in drafting and accounting. He also has completed the Owner/President Management Program at Harvard Business School.

During the Commencement at which he received his honorary degree, Newton also was the speaker. His speech to the Class of 2016, “Five Life Lessons to Consider,” included advice for today’s graduates based primarily on his experience in the business world. But he began by summarizing his family ties to the college, particularly those of his mother, and how those ties sustained him during the darker days the college experienced during recent years. Then, he glanced heavenward and, voice cracking, added, “Mom, we saved her.”

2016-17 is the Year of the Fountain at GC Everyone loves a birthday celebration. Greensboro College is marking the centennial of the iconic fountain on Front Campus during 2016-2017 with the Class of 2017’s class gift earmarked for fountain preservation.

The Class of 2017 has decided that its senior class gift will be contributions to a fund earmarked for preservation of the fountain and for campus beautification. Additional events will be scheduled to mark the fountain’s centennial.

“For 100 years, the fountain has been beloved by students and alumni,” says Anne Jones Hurd ’81, vice president chief advancement officer. “The Class of 2017 loves it as much as the Class of 1917 and all the classes in between.”

The fountain, which stands in front of Main Building, was a gift from the Class of 1917 as America entered World War I.

Greensboro College announces significant legacy gifts Bill and Judy Harris Eason ’65

Ward Lecture Series Endowment Established

Judy Harris Eason’s Greensboro College roots run deep. The bond is as strong as her, and husband Bill’s, North Carolina Methodist family ties. That is why the Easons have made provisions for a $250,000 estate gift for Greensboro College. Bill wanted their planned gift to establish the Judith Harris Eason ’65 Scholarship Fund to honor his wife’s lifelong passion for education, and to help North Carolina students attend GC. “We have seen the impact of scholarships on students who otherwise would not have been able to afford a small, liberal-arts college,” Judy said. Judy and Bill, whose primary home is in Saint Simons Island, Ga., have for 35 years spent as much time as possible at their getaway home on a small cove near Bar Harbor, Maine. It was here that Bill became Judith and Bill Eason immersed in the Maine Seacoast Mission, which helps underserved children in that area. He witnessed the lifelong impact of scholarships on students who came through that program and wanted to honor his educator wife by establishing a permanent scholarship in her honor at the college that she loves. In structuring their estate plan, Bill has designated a portion of his IRA to come to Greensboro College for a permanent scholarship fund to be awarded to GC students from North Carolina. The gift will create opportunities for young people to forge better futures in the same way the Maine program has helped young people in their Maine community.

What ties the Georgian-Mainers to North Carolina? As is true of many old North Carolina Methodist families, many of the women in Judy’s family attended Greensboro College and many of the men in Bill’s family attended Duke University (though there is a very healthy UNC-Duke rivalry among the family alumni of both universities). Theirs is a family of generations of teachers, ministers, lawyers (and the rare tugboat captain) who spent their lives in service to others to make North Carolina a better place to live. Judy’s grandmother, Iredell Swindell, came to Greensboro Female College from tiny Maules Point near Little Washington, N.C. Two generations later, Judy and her three sisters – Virginia H. McGranahan ’52, Betsy H. Proctor ’56, and Ellen H. Weekley ’60 - all attended Greensboro College. Judy Harris graduated from GC in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in education. She went on to teach school in Durham and Atlanta and to work with Head Start in Charlotte. During her four years at GC, Judy made lifelong friends, who often looked to her – as the youngest of five – to explain the ways of the world that she had learned from her older siblings. “My GC friends are still among my closest friends,” Judy says. “I still wear my GC class ring every day so my friends – and my college – are near to me always.” As new members of the Peter Doub Society – Greensboro College’s legacy society of donors, named for the college’s founder – Judy and Bill will provide a significant scholarship award for a Greensboro College student each year in perpetuity.

William Stanley Ward had been married less than 10 years in 1964 when he initiated Greensboro College’s first lecture series. He named it to honor his wife, Jean Fortner Ward ’56, who would go on to serve on the College’s Board of Trustees and as a Lifetime Alumni Board member. A Methodist layman, Bill had a vision to bring outstanding speakers and lecturers to the Greensboro College campus, because such speakers had been an important part of his education as a Guilford College student. Each year for the next 52 years, Bill made a gift to GC to underwrite the Ward Lecture. Upon his death in late October 2015, the generous gift he had planned through his estate established a permanent Ward Lecture endowment, the earnings from which will fund the lecture series in perpetuity. The idea for the lectureship came about during a Western North Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Attending as a delegate from Glenwood Methodist Church, Bill recognized George Finch, who had given the Hannah Brown Finch Memorial Chapel in memory of his mother in 1954. The always-outgoing Bill introduced himself, complimented Mr. Finch on the lovely chapel, and told him how he and his wife, Jean, had spent time there together in prayer while she was a student at GC. He said that one day he hoped to honor his wife in a similar, meaningful fashion.

Jean Fortner Ward ’56

“Mr. Finch told Dad to honor her while she was living, which sent Dad into action,” says daughter Beth Ward Fonorow. Soon thereafter, a determined Bill met with then-GC President Dr. Harold Hutson, who had been a professor of Jean’s. Together, they worked out the details, and the first Ward Lecture was held that year. The 54th annual Ward Lecture is scheduled for March 30, 2017. Jean and Bill’s children, Beth and her older sibling, William Stanley (Stan) Ward II, grew up with the Ward Lecture and have met and established many meaningful – and some long-lasting – relationships with speakers over the years. They, too, have made arrangements in their estate plans to add to the Ward Lecture endowment in the future, as an honor to their parents. The lecture will stand through time as a testament of the love their father had for their mother. Bill Ward always said that it was Greensboro College that brought Jean Fortner, a Philosophy and Religion major from Davidson, N.C., to Greensboro, Glenwood Methodist Church and, therefore, to him. “Giving to others was always a big part of Dad’s life and greatly defined who he was,” Beth says. “It is lovely to recognize that the Jean Fortner Ward Lectureship came into being because two generous men wanted to honor the women they loved.”

Those interested in exploring a planned estate gift to Greensboro College may contact Anne Jones Hurd ’81, vice president chief advancement officer, at 336-217-7266, or anne.hurd@greensboro.edu.

SACSCOC reaccredits Greensboro College for 10 years The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has reaccredited Greensboro College for the next decade. The Commission voted to grant reaccreditation for 10 years, the standard review period, during its annual board meeting Dec. 6. “Reaccreditation from SACSCOC is immensely important to Greensboro College,” says Lawrence D. Czarda, Ph.D., president of the college. “The fact that the college has been granted a 10-year reaccreditation attests to its fiscal stability, the many successes of its students, and its quality faculty and staff. It is a statement that says all is as it should be at Greensboro College.” SACS reaccreditation is a lengthy, rigorous process for any college, involving internal and external scrutiny of learning outcomes and additional critical data ranging from financial stability to compliance with guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Education. A reaffirmation committee appointed by SACSCOC visited Greensboro College in March and recommended that the college’s accreditation be reaffirmed. Dr. Paul Leslie, senior vice president and chief academic officer for Greensboro College, concurs with Czarda that reaccreditation is a testament to the hard work of the college’s faculty and staff as well as the quality of student learning on campus. “The personnel of Greensboro College have worked very hard in the last three years to be certain that the college is in compliance with all core requirements, comprehensive standards, and federal requirements of our accreditation agency,” Leslie says. “We are pleased that our peers at SACSCOC judge us to be in compliance with all industry accreditation standards and judge our plan to enhance the quality of our student learning outcomes to be valuable and in compliance with their expectations. “Such decisions of SACSCOC confirm Greensboro College’s continued diligent efforts to provide our students with the best possible opportunities for higher education.” The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the recognized regional accrediting body in 11 U.S. Southern states and in Latin America for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees. The Commission on Colleges’ Board of Trustees is the representative body of the College Delegate Assembly and is charged with carrying out the accreditation process.

GC2020:

A Clear Vision with a Sharp Focus The Five-Year Strategic Plan for Greensboro College | Excerpts from the 2016 Annual Executive Summary Upon the unanimous recommendation of the Strategic Planning Committee, the GC Board of Trustees unanimously adopted GC2020 on Aug. 28, 2014. This strategic plan will be implemented through June 30, 2020. GC2020 is framed by two organizing three-way conceptual constructs: The three pillars of the strategic plan are that GC is: 1. A liberal-arts college 2. A college of the church, and 3. An evolving Universal Design for Learning (UDL) institution The three organizing concepts for implementing the goals and objectives are: 1. Core academic mission 2. Student development 3. College resources This document contains excerpts from the executive summary of the status of the three pillars of GC2020. 1. Greensboro College Is a Liberal-Arts College Counter to many institutions in the past few years, GC has continued its clear institutional commitment to the liberal-arts tradition, which has been the academic and intellectual core of the college’s success for 178 years. Continued strong placement of students in graduate and professional schools and employment in their chosen fields, and the success of GC alumni not only professionally but also as informed citizens, remain the most tangible evidence of successful student outcomes. However, no liberal-arts curriculum can remain in stasis.

GC is committed to the pillar that the liberal arts are a sound academic foundation and the best possible preparation for a career and for a life of intellectual curiosity, reflective practice, and service. In 2015-16, the college demonstrated this commitment through: • • • • • •

Faculty modification of the general education requirements Annual publications (college handbooks and catalogs) Review and approval of changes to course offerings in a number of academic disciplines, new academic majors and minors: digital music and creative writing, and health science Review of current and new faculty credentials as part of SACSCOC compliance certification Transition to a new academic structure based on the five schools of humanities, business, arts, social sciences & education, and science & mathematics Development and adoption of the new Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), The Informed Citizen

2. Greensboro College is a College of the Church GC was founded and chartered by what is now the United Methodist Church and has maintained that affiliation for 178 years. The GC Board of Trustees includes representation from the church, and the president and chaplain are active in UMC national organizations. The president and chaplain published chapters in faith-based publications, and a member of the religion, ethics and philosophy department authored a book. The college operates a weeklong United Methodist all-state youth choir each summer for high-school students. Weekly chapel services, active Bible study and discussion groups, mission trips, and community service are all intentional components of the student experience.

Points of Pride

The general education requirements continue to mandate coursework in religion, ethics and philosophy. A new Religious Life grant scholarship was offered beginning in the fall of 2015 to enhance recruitment of students committed to a religion major and/or religiouslife service on campus and in the community. The annual lecture series (Ward, Reynolds, and Schleunes) are all focused on matters at the intersection of faith and reason. These events host high-profile speakers on topics of interest to GC and the larger community. The annual Festival of Lessons & Carols is a meaningful Christmas service for alumni and the greater community. GC embraced the UMC call that all campuses commit the 2015-16 year to a series of programs named Heralding the Call to Human Dignity and Social Justice by two actions. First, the newly revised Faculty Handbook and Staff Handbook addressed issues related to the Herald; second, the 2015-16 College Colloquia included six lectures tied directly to issues of human dignity and social justice (underwritten by the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation). Two unique projects also gained wide attention for GC, The Healing Blues Project, which produces music and concerts by homeless storytellers, and hosting the first Art & Dialogue Series focused on race relations. GC is committed to the pillar of being a college of the church and exists at the intersection of faith and reason, providing support and guidance for helping students find their own faith journey via exploration rather than by indoctrination. 3. Greensboro College is an evolving UDL Institution The implementation of a broad commitment for the college to advance as a UDL institution through meaningful discussion, training and investments continued in 2015-16. The full implementation will evolve over the duration of the five-year plan. UDL issues are now a regular component within discussions by trustees, faculty and staff. The Director of Academic Accessibility attended conferences for professional development in UDL strategies and is UDL-certified. The annual professional development series managed

Greensboro College

by the GC Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (a component of the Newton Connexion) made UDL topics a focal point. Facilities, infrastructure, and information technology for UDL support are in the planning stage for sequential implementation. GC is committed to the pillar of UDL at the institutional level to solidify the long-standing advantages of attending a small, private, faith-based liberal-arts college, and it maintains that there is not one typical learning style that fits all students. Significant Achievements: GC2020 FY2016 Successful SACSCOC decennial (10-year) reaffirmation accreditation review The SACSCOC decennial accreditation proved to be a positive exercise. Following the off-site and on-site SACSCOC Committee review, GC was found to be in compliance with all Core Requirements and accreditation reaffirmed for 10 years on December 6. The new Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), The Informed Citizen, included broad input from the GC community, is aligned with GC2020, and was adopted in 2015-16 with implementation beginning in Fall 2016. Positive audit and banking relationship Continuing a multi-year trend, the audited financial statements demonstrated positive financial performance and improvement with no management findings. The college achieved a U.S Department of Education Composite Financial Index score well above the required minimum. A new partnership with First Citizens Bank has allowed for important restructuring of the debt of the college, a return to endowment investment under the guidance of the college and bank, and an overall improvement in all bank-related operations. GC met the bank’s required debt service coverage ratio. In summary, the college’s finances are stable.

Institutional Advancement /quiet planning phase of the Capital Campaign GC2020: Uniquely Focused Planning and quiet-phase development of the new, comprehensive fundraising campaign is evolving as planned. There is steady improvement in public engagement by the college, marketing and public relations. GC is beginning to regain a positive reputation in the community, and marketing efforts were well received in the past year. Enrollment growth GC had the largest-ever incoming class of new and transfer students in fall 2016: 314. New initiatives in undergraduate recruitment are gaining momentum, resulting in growth in almost all categories (arts, wrestling, Honors, Greensboro Guarantee). The master’s degree in TESOL – Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages – continues strong growth. Significant facilities improvements In fall 2015, installation of the artificial-turf Pride Field was completed, and its constant use has brought a new energy to back campus for more than a year. Major structural repairs and completion of a multi-purpose area in Hanes Gymnasium, refurbishing all rooms in Hill Hall residence hall, and exterior patch and paint work all have been completed. With construction equipment now gone, repairs can begin on sidewalks.

Strong board leadership The Board of Trustees has committed to attaining status as an Association of Governing Boards “best practice board” as well as continued commitment, with the president and Cabinet, to shared governance and transparency in management of the college. The board appreciated the inspirational leadership of outgoing Board Chair Walter Newton and has planned for transition in January 2017 to new Chair Kevin Green, who graduated from GC in 1978. More than half of the Board of Trustees are alumni. Enhancements to academics The new general-education requirements were successfully implemented in course scheduling, and transition to the new academic organization was completed ahead of schedule with deans now elected by their faculty and confirmed by the administration. The college began initial steps toward possible establishment of a master’s degree in religion and an undergraduate degree in sports management. Implementation of the Human Resource Committee recommendations The Human Resource Committee was formed and began its work in 2015-16. The college participated in the CUPA national survey to help determine the parameters for its compensation plan. The college negotiated a positive renewal benefits plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield for 2016. After a search, Compass Financial was hired to advise the college on its retirement plan. Changes in the TIAA retirement plans were made, and group and individual meetings were held with college personnel to provide updated information on the plans. A 403(b) fiduciary committee was formed. Preparation for launch of online academic programs in August 2016 The college launched online programs in psychology, criminal justice, Bachelors in Business Administration in Organizational Leadership and Management, and master’s in TESOL. The college contracted with eThink to provide support for the online platform. An upgrade to Moodle, the college’s online learning system, was implemented; select faculty members became

Points of Pride

online certified; and selected courses were developed. A new marketing campaign to support the online program was launched. Identified hiring priority of faculty and staff in key positions Staff and faculty were added in key vacant positions: IA, admissions, assessment, academic accessibility, registrar’s office, academic administrative office, art, and criminal justice. Additional staff and faculty positions were added where growth or new programs dictated: international programs, health sciences, religion, theater, and TESOL. Significant Challenges: Enrollment The competitive nature of the higher-education market disproportionally impacts small, private, liberal-arts colleges and is compounded by the reality that GC is adjacent to two major public institutions and a community college that now compete directly with us for students. The admissions and marketing professionals continue to hone our ability to attract and enroll students who are the right fit for our small, liberal-arts college. Budgetary constraints The Human Resources Committee recommendations are the foundation for a new, comprehensive compensation plan for GC. While it is not possible to fund all recommendations at one time, salary adjustments, annual salary increases, retirement match, faculty workload and staffing levels will be funded incrementally as revenue continues to grow. The positive effect of updates to facilities, infrastructure and IT projects is notable, yet there is more we plan to accomplish. External factors The residual impact of negative news about GC during the 2009-13 period is still a factor in public perception, with the reality that it will take more time to overcome this issue. GC faces significant major competition in fundraising, with numerous major campaigns underway in the city.

9

Significant Goals: GC2020 FY2017 There are many individual goals and objectives to implement, continue or complete in the overall GC2020 plan for the upcoming year. The following will have significant impact in 2016-17: • GC has a new educational partner in China which will bring students to our campus and open our online courses to many more students. Of particular interest is the TESOL program. • According to our strategic plan, GC successfully migrated from utilizing The College Inn for GC student housing as of the end of November 2016, bringing more students to live on main campus in Greensboro, Hill and West residence halls. • GC will continue planning and implementation of improvements to campus facilities adjacent to the Downtown Greenway, a collaborative project of the City of Greensboro and Action Greensboro that is slated for completion in 2018. • The QEP The Informed Citizen is successfully launched and fully operational. • GC anticipates that the public announcement of the capital campaign GC2020: Uniquely Focused will occur in February 2017. In summary, GC2020 shows progress on many goals with much left we hope to achieve. Alignment of all major institutional processes and a continuing culture of accountability will ensure the success of GC2020 during the next four years. Palma Non Sine Pulvere (no reward without effort).

honor Roll of Donors

Report on Funds Raised in 2015-16 By Anne Jones Hurd ’81, Vice President Chief Advancement Officer

It is my pleasure to report that Greensboro College donors made charitable gifts totaling $2,108,117 between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016. Each year, we ask alumni, families and friends to make Greensboro College a priority in their charitable giving, and we thank you for the tremendous impact you have made on every student, in classrooms, athletic fields, stages, residence halls and more. More than $1 million for Operations A total of $1,081,759 in charitable gifts supported operations in 2015-16. Operational expenses include faculty/staff salaries, student financial aid, educational expenses, arts and athletics, campus and facilities utilities and maintenance, and more. Unrestricted gifts – including the GC Fund – of $621,381 supported operations, with another $460,368 directed by donors for various restricted purposes.

Anne Jones Hurd ’81

More than $1 million for Capital/ Permanent assets Another $1,026,368 in charitable gifts were given for capital purposes: $193,499 was given for buildings, including more than $150,000 for residence hall improvements from the Class of 1966 in celebration of their 50th Reunion. Another $832,869 was given for permanent endowment funds. Two of our newest endowment funds were fully funded and a permanent endowment was established for an existing speaker series, while other donors gave to build funds they have already established.

As of June 30, 2016, Greensboro College’s endowment funds totaled $20,272,485 from gifts and investments. Planned Estate Gifts The Peter Doub Society recognizes donors who have made provisions for the college through their estates. GC received $853,155 from the estates of alumni or their family members. We were able to list several new Peter Doub Society members who included GC this past year in their estate plans. GC2020 – Capital Campaign The college spent the year planning and securing lead gifts in the quiet phase of a comprehensive capital campaign, expected to launch in early 2017. All gifts made in 2015-16 will be counted in the capital campaign, which will span the years 2014-2020. Expect major announcements about the campaign in early 2017! Alumni Giving A larger percentage of alumni gave to GC than in recent years, with an increase from 11% in 2014-15 to 13% in 2015-16. Of 5,253 alumni solicited, 833 made gifts. This is an encouraging trend that we are working hard to continue; we’re already reaching toward 15% or more this year! Our ultimate goal is to surpass the national average of 19%. In this Annual Honor Roll of Donors, we gratefully acknowledge the generous donors who made gifts to Greensboro College last year. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this report; however, as with work of this nature, we may have made inadvertent errors of omission. If this has occurred, we apologize and ask that you contact us.

Residence halls getting a makeover thanks to classes of 1966, 1967 Hill Hall is looking fresher these days, thanks to the Greensboro College classes of 1966 and 1967. Both 50th-reunion classes have directed their class gifts toward refurbishing residence halls at GC. More than $150,000 has been committed, and the Class of 1967 is still giving in advance of its reunion in April 2017. The funds are currently being used to renovate rooms in Hill – one of three residence halls on campus – where crews began work this summer. Improvements include new, stackable beds; new ceiling tiles; removal of shelving in the main area to increase flexibility in arranging new furniture; painting walls, trim and cabinetry; new window blinds; and refurbishing counter and desk tops.

"Upgrades to our residence halls are an important way to attract new students and retain those who are already here,” said Anne Jones Hurd ’81, vice president chief advancement officer. “Residence hall living is a vital part of the Greensboro College experience, as many life lessons are learned outside of the classroom. “In the 1960s, Greensboro College was going through a period of growth and change, just as we are now. The college's future is bright because our alumni continue to value the education they received here and help to sustain the college for those who are coming along after."

Greensboro College Mourns the Loss of

Phyllis Prevatt Bowman She came to Greensboro College in 1988 as a part-time secretary in the Career Development Center, whose student employment program she coordinated. She joined the staff full-time in 1990 as an office manager in the Office of Student Development, where she added computers to what had been a typewritersonly office.

An American hornbeam tree was planted in front of Proctor Hall West in Bowman’s memory and dedicated on Oct. 27. During the past few years, Greensboro College has gone through some of the biggest institutional endeavors a college like ours ever has to wrestle with – creating a strategic plan and preparing the college’s case for 10-year reaccreditation from its accrediting body.

skills to supporting of the organization, but also commit their passion and devotion to the mission of the place,” said Lawrence D. Czarda, Ph.D., college president.

Many people had a hand in that work, but few were more deeply involved, or more essential, than Phyllis Prevatt Bowman. Bowman died April 19 of cancer after almost 30 years of service to the college staff; she continued working until just days before her death.

“Phyllis was a model to us all in this regard. Her unique mix of skills, abilities, work ethic, character and calm good humor will be missed by us all. While she served the college with distinction for decades, her commitment to the SACSCOC Compliance Report this past year serves as a benchmark of a job very well done that will inspire us all for many years to come.”

Bowman, 54, was the college’s assistant vice president for academic services and chief assessment officer and held a faculty appointment as instructor of computer science. Her most recent major assignment had been coordinating the college’s documentation of its case for its 10-year reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. “Every organization has a cadre of very special people who not only give of their talents and

At Commencement on May 7, Bowman was posthumously awarded the Nannie Lee Smith Exemplary Service medal, the college’s highest honor. The medal recognizes outstanding service to the college during an extended period of time and was last awarded in 2012. Bowman graduated from the college in 2001 with a degree in political science and a minor in legal administration. She also held an M.I.S. from the University of Phoenix.

She then spent seven years, from 1992 to 1999, as records manager and internationalstudent coordinator in the college’s Office of Admissions, managing applicationmanagement software, overseeing both computerized and paper admissions files, and serving as liaison to the federal government on issues related to international students. From January 2000 until the late 2000s, she oversaw all the college’s administrative software, ranging from general user networks to budgeting, procurement, and enrollment. She became director of institutional research and assessment before becoming assistant vice president for academic services and chief assessment officer in July 2015. Her survivors include her husband, Rick; son, Daniel Chambers, a 2009 Greensboro College graduate in biology; parents, George and Katie Prevatt; sister and brother-in-law, LeFran and Scott Cole; and niece and nephew, Jordyn and Dylan Cole. “I became quite a fan of hers,” President Czarda said, “and I miss her dearly.”

Allen Kivett, first man

to attend Greensboro College full-time and graduate, dies at 84

Allen Edward Kivett was born in Asheboro, N.C., and came to Greensboro College in 1956 as a 24-year-old Korean War veteran. He had seen active duty in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and had attended Greenbriar Military School in 1955-1956. Kivett enrolled among the first group of men permitted to attend the college full time. He majored in business administration and minored in history, and was voted the first president of the men’s Student Government Association. During his freshman year, he lived on campus in the Turrentine Hall dormitory. In 1957, Kivett married and moved off campus. He helped pay for his GC education by earning scholarships and using the G.I. Bill. During the summers, he worked as head lifeguard at the Lindley Park pool. Kivett also is credited with creating the first intramural sports teams at GC and participated in the football league. He graduated in January 1960, having completed his B.A. in business administration in just three and a half years. The president of the college, Harold Hutson, personally offered Kivett a position at GC, and he began working in the Admissions Office immediately after graduation. He worked as an assistant in the Admissions and Public Relations offices before being promoted in 1963 to Director of Admissions. In 1972, Kivett began College Night, an annual event for students in Guilford County who were interested in learning more about colleges, universities, trade schools, and military branches from across the country. After leaving GC in 1974, he was employed at Pilot Life Insurance Co. (now Lincoln Financial Group), where he held the position of Manpower Development and Sales from 1974 to 1995. In 1995, he transitioned to Sales, where he remained for 10 years. In his retirement, Kivett kept busy working with the Boy Scouts of America, Meals on Wheels, and other charities. Allen held the honorary position of vice president of the Greensboro College Alumni Association Board and was the 1974 recipient of Greensboro College’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Kivett, who lived in Greensboro, passed away Sept. 25, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Vira Kivett, and daughter, Martitia “Marty” Richardson.

If you ever were late to one of Barnes Tatum’s classes, you took your safety into your own hands. That’s because Tatum would block classroom doors with furniture to frustrate the perpetually late, or prop trash cans over classroom doors to startle the unwary who tried to sneak in tardy. When one student kept skipping Tatum’s 8 a.m. class, Tatum once brought the class to that student’s dorm room and lectured there. And if your work wasn’t up to snuff, Tatum was always ready with a spray can prominently labeled, “B.S. repellent.” Tatum, the college’s Jefferson Pilot Professor of Religion and Philosophy Emeritus, died Aug. 26 at age 78. Tatum “served this college as a highly respected New Testament scholar, as dean, as interim president, and as a mentor to countless students,” said Daniel Malotky, dean of the School of Humanities and Lucy H. Robertson Professor of Religion and Philosophy. “I will always think of him as the conscience of the college. … He always had the good of the school as a whole in mind.” A former student recalled on Facebook that a classmate once moved to adjourn Tatum’s class. The class voted unanimously to adjourn, so Tatum dismissed the class – and tested it the next day on the material the class would have gone over. “As a colleague, Barnes was generous with his time, his advice, and his humor,” recalled another former Religion Department colleague, John Woell.

Greensboro College Mourns the Death of

Barnes Tatum, Professor Emeritus

“Barnes was a scholar not just of New Testament, which he was too, but of life. He taught me what was good about the liberal arts through his unbridled curiosity — whether it was excitement that Richard Swinburne had calculated the probability for the bodily resurrection (.93 one year, .96 two years later) or his declaration that ‘Talladega Nights’ might be ‘the perfect film.’ He took the same open, critical eye to everything and exemplified liberal learning.”

“I will always think of him as the conscience of the college. ... He always had the good of the school as a whole in mind.” — Daniel Malotky

As a scholar, Tatum was active in the work of the Jesus Seminar, Westar Institute, a group of several dozen scholars and lay people founded in 1985 and devoted to determining whether the sayings and acts of Jesus were historical fact. In that capacity, he wrote “John the Baptist and Jesus: A Report of the Jesus Seminar” in 1994. He also published several other books, including “In Quest of Jesus,” “Jesus at the Movies,” and “Jesus: A Brief History,” and his books have been used as texts at numerous colleges and universities. He published numerous articles in academic journals and was a featured contributor to “The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception.” And he presented numerous times at the conferences of the American Academy of Religion. His interest in the depiction of Jesus in film led him to be featured as a commentator on American Movie Classics (AMC), the History Channel, the BBC, and EO Television. He held a B.A. from Birmingham Southern College, an M.L.S. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and B.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University. He served on the Greensboro College faculty from 1973 until 2009, when he assumed emeritus status. He served as dean of the college from 1983 to 1987. Tatum received the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1980, the Moore Professorship in 1993-1994, and the United Methodist Exemplary Faculty Award in 2001. A former colleague in the Department of Religion, Rhonda Burnette-Bletsch, who spoke at Tatum’s memorial service, emphasized that scholarship alone wouldn’t have made Tatum the beloved icon that he was.

“I think the most important lesson Barnes taught me was that, at the end of the day, relationships with people are what matters most,” BurnettBletsch said. “Years ago he received a letter from a woman whose son had begun to read the Bible in prison. She asked if Barnes would write to encourage him and answer some of his questions. He carried on a pen pal relationship with this state inmate and his mother for years.” For all his pranks, Tatum cared deeply about his students’ well-being, Burnett-Bletsch said, even going so far as to organize late-night study groups to ensure his Greek students were ready for their final. And students appreciated that caring, which had powerful consequences. One former student wrote: “I went to college with an intention to be a biology major with a minor in playing football, and he set me on a course in a New Testament class my first semester that would lead me to find my faith in a way I never thought possible, a way that inspires me even today to teach young people that a faith that doesn’t seek understanding is built on sand. Without that … course, I wouldn’t have taken other religion classes, I wouldn’t have learned to claim feminism as a part of my life, I wouldn’t have gone to seminary, met my wife, had my children, or be working now to help others see faith not as an exercise devoid of intellect, but rather a journey that requires it.” Tatum is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Chris and Rob; stepsons, Chris Wilson and Hal Wilson; sister, Karla Dooling; and five grandchildren. “What a ceaseless intellect – hilarious and perceptive,” said Jim Langer, professor and chair of the Department of Art. “Some light has left GC forever.”
