Teachers’ Notes

Our Winter Term class, The Illustrated Cookbook, consisted of 24 11th and 12th

grade students who worked for five days during January of 2024. The idea for the course was inspired by the amazing cookbook “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat” by Samin Nosrat and illustrated by Wendy MacNaughton. The students used this as their textbook. The course was packed with learning: kitchen safety, demonstrations, tastings, daily drawing practice, research, cooking, interviews, typography, layout design, etc. In small teams, students chose a recipe to prepare during class. Each group designed and created a two-page illustrated step-by-step recipe and compiled their work into this cookbook. We are so proud of what they learned and accomplished.
