Friends Book Drive October 17–22 The Friends of the Green Hills Library want your donations of gently used books, CDs, DVDs, and audiobooks. We will accept materials that are in good condition to be sold at the Friends Fall Book Sale. Please leave your donations with Friends volunteers on the ground floor of the Library from October 17–22 (times TBA).

Friends of the Library Membership Drive We invite you to become a member of the Friends of the Green Hills Library during our membership drive. The Friends is a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging public interest and financial support for the Library. We have purchased furniture and display cases, covered expenses for winter and summer reading programs, and much more. The Friends also volunteer for book drives and book sales. The Friends have two meetings each year to provide information about our activities and opportunities to socialize with other Friends. While all volunteers are more than welcome, many members join the Friends simply to support the Library and the unique opportunities that are provided to the local community. The annual membership fee is $5.00 for an individual; $10.00 for a family. Please visit the Information Desk for a membership form. Thank you for your support!

Legislator Meet and Greet Wednesday, September 14 • 7pm

Dear Library Community, I recently attended the American Library Association Conference in Orlando, Florida. The theme of the conference was “Libraries Transform.” Yes, we do! We provide access to essential information and resources. More than a quarter of U.S. households don’t have a computer with an internet connection. We keep calm and open our doors to everyone. We are a safe haven where everyone is met by welcoming staff. One of the most interesting programs I attended was presented by Diane Guerrero, star of Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin. She shared her story of how her parents were detained and deported when she was fourteen-years-old. She was the only member of her family with U.S. citizenship so she remained in the U.S. Her parents had pursued legal citizenship, but had been fraudulently represented. These tragic events led her to advocate for immigration reform. The Library has Guerrero’s book In the Country We Love: My Family Divided, a memoir about her parents’ deportation. We also have a Civics and Citizenship Toolkit available for checkout; just ask staff for more information. State Senator Bill Cunningham (18th District) and State Representative Kelly Burke (36th District) will be at the Library on September 14 to answer any questions you have. September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, so I encourage all of you without a library card to come and visit us. We are here to sign you up and share all the wonderful resources we have to offer. October is Palos Reads month and this year’s book is The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez. This is a timely story of the struggles of immigrant families. We will be reading this book for our September book discussion on September 28 at 7pm. I hope to see many of you at the Palos Country Club for Palos Reads on October 12.

Do you have questions you would like to ask your local representatives? Meet State Senator Bill Cunningham (18th District) and State Representative Kelly Burke (36th District) at the Library.

Crochet for Charity We have donated a total of 68 baby blankets, 365 pet beds, and 322 red newborn hats. This is an ongoing program, so bring in your donations anytime. We will accept items that are already completed or you can check out a bag with all the materials provided. We also accept yarn donations of any color as long as it is machine washable and dryable.

English Language Learner Conversation Circle Meetup We are looking into starting a Conversation Circle with English Language Learners who would like to meet and talk at our Library. If interested, please contact Laura Asiamah at (708) 598-8446 ext. 120.

Palos Reads 2016: The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez Wednesday, October 12 • 7pm The 14th annual Palos Reads will be at the Palos Country Club. Joining us this year will be the author ofThe Unknown Americans , a New York Times Notable Book of 2014 and one of Amazon’s Top 10 Books of the Year. The event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow. The Library will be reading this for our Book Club on September 28. Read the book and meet the author!

What’s Our Staff Reading? Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi tells the complicated history of African slavery through the tale of two sisters, Effia and Esi, whose fates diverge greatly. Their stories span the 18th century to modern day, switching from Ghana to the United States. The lives of their descendants are told in interconnected chapters which examine the Civil War, the Great Migration, and the formation of two very disparate societies. Gyasi thoughtfully weighs the impacts of slavery and racism from varying points of view through sparse, yet compelling language.
