announcements New Mobile App The SWAN Libraries App functions as your digital Library card and lets you access the catalog and your account at any time. You can download the app on your iOS or Android device. Features include: • Review checkouts and renew eligible items. • View holds information; create, suspend, and/or cancel holds. • View and pay current fines. • Families with linked accounts can store multiple Library cards. • Search the Library catalog for physical and downloadable items. • Find nearby libraries. • Scan ISBN barcodes to see if an item is available at GHPLD.

Looking back over 2019 it’s been an eventful year at the Library starting with our migration into the SWAN library consortium which has offered us access to over 8.5 million items. I have noticed how quickly my holds arrive which prompts me to spend even more time reading or to learn time management in how soon I need to place a hold! In April, we had our first Local Author Meet & Greet which was a fantastic debut event; we discovered one of the authors writes his books here in our Library! As we headed into summer we welcomed the addition of Strange Brew Café as well as Rainbow Cone for our Summer Reading Kick-Off. We continue to partner with Strange Brew Café for adult and youth programs. Our most popular youth story time is Milk and Cookies at Strange Brew Café. As always, many thanks to the Friends of the Library for their generous support of our reading programs.

Friends of the Library Annual Meeting Thursday, November 7 • 6:30pm Location: 1st Floor Meeting Room The mission of the Friends of the Green Hills Library is to assist the Library in the promotion of its services to the community and provide financial assistance for projects not possible through the Library’s budget. At the Annual Meeting, the Friends will review the past year and discuss plans for 2020. Come join us for an evening of greeting, meeting, and eating and learn the wonderful things we have planned for the coming year. Not a member? New members are always welcome. Membership forms are available at the Library or online at greenhillslibrary.org.

Crochet for Charity We have donated a total of 155 baby blankets, 1,212 pet beds, and 479 hats. This is an ongoing program, so bring in your donations anytime. We will accept items that are already completed or you can check out a bag with all the materials provided. We are always accepting yarn donations as long as the yarn is machine washable. All donations can be given to the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor of the Library.

For this year’s National Night Out in August, in addition to being at the Palos Hills event where we were entertained by Dave Rudolf, we added Kasey Meadow Park in Hickory Hills to our venue where Modern Day Romeos gave a high energy music show. As I write this letter, we are busy planning for our second Haunted Library Tour which is shaping up to be another resounding success! We partnered with Lake Katherine to create a Pollinator garden which is really starting to blossom now.

How to Register for Events

I would like to remind you that the Library will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 28. As we look ahead to December, the Library will be open on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve from 9am–3pm.

I love podcasts! They can be entertaining, informative, and enlightening. Podcasts are perfect for long commutes, boredom, cleaning, working, and so much more! One of my all-time favorite podcasts is Criminal. Imagine being told the most fascinating stories with often bizarre and complex twists. Criminal is a quick listen, done with exceptional production. Give it a shot! Check out our instagram page for more staff picks! -Britt, Adult Services
