So Long, Overdue Fines! That’s right, GHPLD is now a fine free Library! On February 15, the Library Board of Trustees voted to remove the assessment of fines on overdue materials. These changes went into effect on March 11. We value inclusiveness and strive to ensure that all community members have the opportunity to utilize and benefit from materials, programs, and services. Removing the assessment of overdue fines helps to eliminate barriers for Library card use. As a way to give back to the community, we have waived all existing overdue fines on GHPLD Library accounts, giving community members a fresh start.

Email: ghpl@greenhillslibrary.org

What does it mean to be fine free?

Web: greenhillslibrary.org

The Library’s fine free structure is based on an “our house, our rules” configuration. Any user checking out materials at GHPLD, resident or not, can benefit from the removal of overdue fine assessments. GHPLD cardholders should be aware that they are subject to the lending policies, including any applicable fines, of other surrounding libraries that they visit.

Instead of being charged for overdue fines, an alert will be placed on user accounts once an item is overdue for 14 days or longer. This alert will prevent future use of the card, but once the overdue item is returned, no fines are assessed and the card is free to be used again. The Library will continue to assess charges for materials that are lost or damaged. Along with the removal of overdue fines, the Library’s lending policies were updated to create more consistency among the overall circulation structure. Please visit the Library’s website for a complete list: greenhillslibrary.org/library-cards.

From the Director I hope you enjoy reading our newsletters as much as I do! I especially enjoyed this one, not only because of the great news that we are now a fine free Library and the amazing programs put together by our staff, but also because of how wonderful it looks with all of the vibrant colors. So, my compliments to our newsletter designer, Brittany Ramos; well done on another great newsletter design. I am very grateful to our Library Board of Trustees who approved our fine free policy. There are currently 31 libraries out of all the 100 SWAN libraries that are fine free, and 40 libraries that are temporarily fine free in response to COVID-19. Being fine free ensures our patrons get access to all our Library services. Please remember that if you check out materials from another Library, you will be subject to their policies. If you have any questions, please call the Library and staff will be happy to assist you. Our 2021 Summer Reading Challenge begins on June 14, and as usual, we will have some great prizes including gift cards to support our local businesses. If you register during the first week of the Summer Reading Challenge, you will receive a voucher to use at our local Strange Brew Cafe. We are still operating on our reduced hours and services but things can change quickly, so please contact us by phone, 708-598-8446, or visit us online at greenhillslibrary.org for more details.
