from the director

announcements Summer Reading Program 2019 Monday, June 10–Saturday, August 3

Youth 0-9 Prizes Include: • Antsy Pants Pirate Ship Embark on a journey to discover A Universe of Stories during this year’s Summer Reading Program. We invite • Amazon Kids Tablet youth and adults of all ages to sign up and participate • Basketball Arcade Game • Museum Tickets during this eight-week program. Log your reading to earn tickets for a chance to win one of our grand prizes. • Zoo Tickets • Gift Cards Readers ages 0–17 will receive weekly prize tokens.

For our children, the final school bell has rung for the year and they are eager to enjoy their summer days. We want our children to enjoy these carefree days but we don’t want them to lose those skills they have been learning all year. Research confirms that children who participate in summer Library programs better retain the reading skills they gained during the school year, and may even improve their reading level. If you haven’t already signed up for our “A Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program, there is still time. The program is for children and adults of all ages; log your reading to earn tickets for a chance to win one of our grand prizes. If you use our walking path on the east side of the Library, you will see we are doing some additional planting. We are working with Lake Katherine to install a native pollinator garden. Pollinator gardens are on the decline, causing concerns because of the ecological and economic services they provide. It is estimated that somewhere between 75% and 95% of all flowering plants need help with pollination. Planting will be done in two phases, with phase one including native flowers and grasses and phase two including trees and shrubs. I encourage you take a stroll down this path, stopping along the way to test your knowledge of the fun space fact boards as part of our “A Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program. -Jane Jenkins jjenkins@greenhillslibrary.org
