he 9 member cities of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network TIsland, (Bilbao I Rioja, Bordeaux, Cape Town, Florence, Christchurch I South Mainz I Rheinhessen, Mendoza, Porto, San Francisco I Napa Valley) are pleased to present the 2011 selection of the most original, innovative vine and wine sites for visitors. An international panel of experts examined applications from each of the wine regions in the Network, in seven categories covering the whole spectrum of wine tourism: • Architecture, parks and gardens, • Art and culture, • Innovative wine tourism experiences, • Accommodation, • Wine tourism services, • Sustainable wine tourism practices, • Wine tourism restaurants. ilbao, la plus grande ville du nord de l’Espagne, est située sur la côte du Golfe de Gascogne. C’est aujourd’hui une ville riche et trépidante, où l’on trouve de nombreux espaces culturels tels que le Musée Guggenheim, et l’arche étincelante de la passerelle piétonne connue sous le nom de Pasarela de Uribitarte, conçue par l’espagnol Santiago Calatrava. C’est également la porte d’accès à la région vinicole de la Rioja, qui possède des traditions séculaires et une cuisine régionale riche et variée. ilbao, the most important city in northern Spain, is located on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. It is today a rich and vibrant city, with important cultural spaces such as the Guggenheim Museum, and the gleaming, arched footbridge, the Pasarela de Uribitarte, designed by Spaniard Santiago Calatrava. It is also the gateway to the Rioja wine region, with its centuries old traditions and rich and varied regional cuisine. The architectural treasures of Bilbao - where even the metro system has been designed by Sir Norman Foster, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize - has carried over into its neighbouring wine district, and the stunning scenery of Rioja is contrasted with an ever growing number of startling, excitingly designed wineries, cellars and welcome centres.

Le Domaine d’Olarra a été créé en 1973, près de Logroño. Bodegas Olarra is located on the outskirts of Logroño. Since it was founded in 1973, Olarra has been characterised by the beauty and complexity of its facilities, known as the Cathedral of Rioja, with its unique 'Y' shaped ground plan, as well as its 111 hexagonal "egg box" domes. This bodega has been able to combine the most modern winemaking techniques with the traditional vinification and ageing processes of Rioja, creating wines which have been conceived according to strict quality standards.

Passionate about modern painting, Martine Cazeneuve wanted to invite art into Paloumey. Since its renaissance in 1990, the château has exhibited paintings and sculptures by various artists once or twice a year. During private viewings, art lovers can discover new works and share their emotions. Le Château Grand Corbin-Despagne travaille la vigne depuis 1996 en respectant les principes de l’Agriculture Raisonnée et de la Charte Terra Vitis. Aujourd’hui, c’est la totalité du vignoble qui a été convertie aux principes de l’Agriculture biologique, pour le 198ème millésime de la famille Despagne à Saint-Emilion. Les visites, réalisées dans les vignobles et les chais par des diplômés en œnologie, sont imprégnées de cette philosophie et visent à mettre en valeur les différentes étapes de l’évolution de la vigne et de l’élaboration du vin dans un environnement naturel. Château Grand Corbin-Despagne has worked the vine since 1996 in accordance with the principles of Sustainable Farming and the Terra Vitis Charter. Today the whole vineyard, in the Despagne family for 198 years, has been converted to organic farming. The tours of the vineyards and cellars led by qualified wine experts are imbued with this philosophy and aim to highlight the different stages of the evolution of the wine in a natural environment.

Cette demeure Renaissance, classée monument historique en Italie, a été construite au 14e siècle. The farm and the magnificent villa lay amongst rolling hills south-west of Florence. The core of the estate dates back to 1066, while the villa was rebuilt in the 18th century with the extensive garden. The Bernhard-Räder wine estate describes itself as a meeting place for wine-lovers, enthusiasts for old buildings, gardening fans and epicures. Apart from a groin vault and tunnel vault, the building, which was constructed on the walls of a castle, also contains rib vault. This concentration of three different types of vault is unique in Rheinhessen. For a wine tasting in the art nouveau study or in the vinotheque in the groin vault hall, history and tradition are omnipresent here.

La bodega Faraón fut inspirée, lors de sa construction, par l’Egypte antique, pionnière dans l’art et le vin. On en trouve des illustrations dans les fresques qui habillent les murs des bâtiments, ainsi que dans la statue du pharaon Ramsès II située dans l’entrée. Mais les touristes et spécialistes en œnologie visitent également la propriété pour découvrir le processus de fermentation continue (Fermentation Cremaschi) qui consiste à contrôler la température des vins. Cette pratique innovante fut inventée et brevetée au milieu du siècle dernier par la bodega. The winery Faraón was inspired, during its construction, by antique Egypt, pioneers in the art and wine. Illustrations of this are to be found in the frescos dressing the walls of the buildings, as well as in the statue of the Pharaoh Ramses II situated in the entrance. But tourists and specialists in oenology also visit the property to discover the process of “continuous fermentation" (Fermentation Cremaschi) consisting in controlling the temperature of wines. This innovative practice was invented and patented in the middle of the last century by the winery.
