Southern Delaware County is home to one of New York’s recreation jewels - Bear Spring Mountain Park and Wildlife Management Area. By Lillian Browne

The 7,000-acre park that spans the towns of Hancock, Walton and Colchester has something for every type of outdoor adventure seeker or nature lover. The park encompasses a vast multi-use trail system that can be used for day hikers of every fitness and experience level. The trails vary from easy and rolling with breathtaking vistas to those that are more strenuous with steeper grades and more challenging terrain. Hikers, bird-watchers and nature photographers will find themselves occasionally sharing the trail with equestrians, who can trailer their own horses to the park for day-riding or overnight camping. The Photo: Lisa Wisely

horse-friendly camping section of the park is outfitted with covered tie-stalls for overnight stays or to rest between trail rides. The multi-use trail system has in recent years also become an attraction for mountain bike enthusiasts and, during the winter months, for snow bikers. During those snow-filled months, the trails are transformed into groomed snowmobile trails which are shared with cross-country skiers and snowshoe hikers. Tent or camper sites are available at the park’s state run campground and the sites, though nearly primitive, have restrooms and showers nearby. A sandy beach fronts Launt Pond where

swimming is permitted. Paddle boats and canoe rentals are also available for those who prefer being on the water rather than in it. Hunters will find the park flourishing with wild game. Bear and deer as well as small game such as rabbit, bobcat, turkey and pheasant are abundant in the various hunting seasons. Licensed hunters who successfully obtain a non-ambulatory hunter’s permit are also able to traverse miles of trail via an all-terrain vehicle. Sections of the park are wheelchair-friendly and American with Disabilities Act compliant, making activities like platform fishing at Launt Pond for trout,

There is also a wheelchair ramp and mounting block for horseback riders at Spruce Grove, making it easier for mobility-impaired equestrians to safely mount and dismount from a ride. Recent upgrades on the campground property also make the restroom, playground and pavilion accessible by wheelchair and ADA friendly.

For unique homeware, and quality attire, textiles and accessories, step into Stewart’s Department Store (85 Main Street, 607.746.2254) where map-patterned wrapping paper, ceramic teapots, magnifying glasses and old-fashioned wooden puzzles and toys are sold alongside Woolrich clothing. History buffs will feel as though they’ve stepped into the past with a stroll through the Courthouse Square home to the Delaware County Court-

The sprawling lawn hosts a farmers’ market on Wednesdays from June through October, 9am-2pm, and once served as the site for temporary shanty-built jail pods during the famed Anti-Rent War. The Walton boat launch is located approximately 1 mile north of the village of Walton where visitors can enjoy American fare with a Turkish flare at The Castle on the Delaware (139 Stockton Avenue, 607.865.4300). For those interested in architecture, Walton’s Magic Mile takes you through the beautiful historic district past several magnificent Victorian homes. Starting at the William B. Ogden Free Library (42 Gardiner Place, 607.865.5929) which opened in 1899, you’ll also pass the 103-year-old Walton Theatre (45 Gardiner Place, 607.865.6688) which features current films as well as exhibits and local guest performers.

Spectacular Catskill Mountain views and rolling terrain make Delaware County a top destination for golfers. Here you’ll find many premier golf facilities with pristine courses, perfect for novices and experts alike. Grab your clubs and make a tradition out of it: an annual weekend getaway to focus on the perfect putt on the most amazing greens in a leisurely, non-competitive atmosphere. After a game, a cool drink at a clubhouse enjoying a breathtaking mountain view completes a relaxing day. By Lillian Browne Delhi golfer Karen Graves has spent 20 years in the game and has played on nearly all of the county’s fairways. She favors The College Golf Course at Delhi (85 Scotch Mountain Road, 607.746.4653, golfcourse.delhi.edu), a premier 18-hole public golf course which has a dual certification as a USGA Member Course and Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary Course. In addition to having lush fairways in wonderful condition with well-manicured greens, the scenery, she says, cannot be Photo: Hanah Mountain Resort & Country Club in Margaretville

beat. Unlike many other courses, there is a driving range, a putting green and a practice sand trap. As a frequent player at the course, she has some insider tips. The busiest time at the course is weekday mornings, so if planning a round during that time, it’s a good idea to call ahead for a reservation. Hole 6, par 4, has an elevated tee which helps a drive to sail, but hole 3 is by far the most challenging on the course. The par 5 hole, she explains, is a “dog-leg right” with

an uphill second shot which is hit onto an elevated sloping green that can be quick. “You really need to hit your shot close to the pin on that green,” she says with an experienced respect. She considers herself to be an average golfer and the best score she’s had on the course is 80, 8 over par. A meal at the course-side restaurant, which offers patio seating, is an enjoyable way to end a round of golf.

The setting is an invitation to feel like a kid again and make snow angels or have a snowball fight. But that’s just the beginning. You can breathe here. The Catskills bring light, air, and the nature that I crave. As a Norwegian it is as close as I can get to the nature, people and community that I feel at home in. We are so lucky to live in this beautiful area. This is where we come to disconnect from our daily busy lives and reconnect with ourselves and each other. Torkil Stavdal (Norway) Visual Storyteller

did you know

how delaware county towns got their names The Village of Margaretville was named in honor of the birth of Margaret Lewis, the granddaughter of Chancellor Robert Livingston, in 1850. The Town of Delhi is named after the city of Delhi, India, in honor of founder Ebenezer Foote, “The Great Mogul”. Another founder, Erastus Root, a rival of Foote, is responsible for the pronunciation (del-high). When he learned the town was to be named Delhi, he exclaimed, “Delhi, Hell-high! Might as well call it Foote-high.”

The name Bovina was suggested by General Erastus Root, who noted the area’s fitness for grazing. The Town of Andes was named as the result of a jocular suggestion by Daniel H. Burr, who, seeing that the new town was to include one of the hilliest sections of the county, said it ought to be called Andes.

The Town of Franklin is named after the son of Benjamin Franklin. The Franklin family owned large tracts of land in Delaware County. The Town of Sidney was named in honor of British naval officer Sir Sidney Smith (1764-1840) who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Photo: Riikka Olson. Margaretville Fire Department Field Days.

The Town of Hancock is named for John Hancock, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The Town of Walton was named after landowner William Walton whose land composes most of the town.

What if you could step into a different way of life at a Catskills family farm? A farm stay (or ‘haycation’) is a wonderful way to disconnect from the daily grind and connect with nature, farming and food.

The Marsiglio family at Stony Creek Farmstead (1738 Freer Hollow Rd, Walton 607.865.7965 stonycreekfarmstead.com) has distilled a recipe for forming that deep connection by diversifying their farm with an agritourism “stay, play and learn” getaway for visitors. Family matriarch Kate Marsiglio cultivates that experience by providing an all-encompassing farm stay experience for guests that includes an invitation to collect eggs, feed farm animals, milk a cow and harvest vegetables, allowing them to embrace nature and appreciate quality food. The Marsiglios are stewards of the environment and provide low-impact, wheelPhoto: Joe Damone. Delaware County Fair in Walton.

chair accessible, platform tent camping for guests. The tents are fully outfitted with kitchenettes, wood-fueled cook stoves and bathroom facilities, as well as sleeping for six. Marsiglio describes it as “glamping” – or chic, plush camping. It’s canvas-cabin camping complete with a bed. Part of forming a stronger connection with nature and food, she explains, is to disconnect from technology and go “off the grid”. The hillsides that cradle the creek exemplify the agricultural and rural nature of the area, but also prohibit cell phone service. A stay at the farmstead will push people in a way they may not be familiar with. “Nature disciplines you,” she says.

Those looking for traditional entertainment during a farm stay will find it nearby. Castle on the Delaware (139 Stockton Ave, Walton, 917.348.7890 castleonthedelaware.com) hosts musical guests and special events, and you’ll find movies and concerts at the historic Walton Theater (31 Gardiner Pl, Walton, 607.865.6688, waltontheatre.org)

21

stay delaware county travel guide 2017

22

Part of that discipline is learning something new, or a new way to do things. The farm stay has evolved over the years and reflects Marsiglio’s educational background with an art-based day camp for children and adult workshops that include men’s and women’s retreats where courses in loom building, weaving, wild food foraging, salve making, stone wall building, bread making, fermentation and more are taught. Guests will also learn how to make pizza for every palate in an outdoor wood-fired oven. Saturday nights are communal pizza nights, where the main course is guest-crafted. As it’s baking, kids can catch fireflies while adults enjoy a campfire. Marsiglio’s goal is for visitors to have a full sensory experience where the sights, sounds and smells of nature are heightened. Stony Creek Farmstead hosts visitors from May through October. During the “off” season, they grow and sell “free-range, beyond organic” lamb, pork, chicken and beef.

while there Equestrians interested in horseback riding lessons or trail rides can visit Country Meadows Equine (1027 East Brook Road, Walton 607.865.8071).

Railroad and train buffs can explore the history of the O & W Railroad and tour a “wedding car” while taking in the regional sights through local memorabilia of days gone by at Franklin Railroad and Community Museum (572 Main

Delaware County may be best known for its visual beauty, but there are plenty of ways to treat the other senses. Scattered around the region are a number of pubs, distilleries and tasting rooms to wet your whistle while meeting friends, both old and new. Here’s a few local favorites: By Lisa Wisely

Wayside Cider (55 Redden Lane, Andes 845.676.6002 waysidecider.com) opened the doors in 2016 to its gorgeous taproom that’s cozy in the winter, and also boasts a beautiful outdoor space that feels like a magical forest hideaway for a warm summer night. The taproom serves not only the house ciders, but local wines, beers and spirits as well, along with meat and cheese plates, sandwiches and more. The Bull and Garland Pub & Inn (760 Main Street, Hobart 607.538.3006 bullandgarland.com) also has a lovely outdoor seating area in addition to the British style pub and eatery inside, featuring a wide selection of cocktails. Photo: Natalie Chitwood. Wayside Cider in Andes.

Union Grove Distillery (43311 Route 28, Arkville 845.586.6300 uniongrovedistillery. com) distills its Vly Creek Vodka using fresh Catskills mountain water, apples and wheat, with a new variation made from local tree juice maple syrup. A wide variety of cocktails are available including an incredible Cosmopolitan in their cocktail lounge located on site where you can also tour the distillery. O’Neill’s Shire Pub (123 Main Street, Delhi 607.746.8758 theshiredelhi.com) is a rustic local public house serving food and drink, such as their fabulous orange pomegranate margarita and a large selection of local and imported beers and ales. It’s the perfect local gathering place with live music, karaoke,

trivia nights, a pool table and daily specials. Public Restaurant & Lounge (2318 County Highway 41, Roxbury 607.326.4026 publicrestaurant-roxbury.com) is a cozy, modern eatery located inside a former blacksmith’s shop. Great service, friendly patrons and an incredible drink menu serving all the local creations make this a hub of activity in the Western Catskills. Feather & Stone (38 West Street, Walton 607.510.8496 featherandstonerestaurant.com) serves traditional American and home-style comfort food with a full bar and an impressive selection of house cocktails including a Feather Mai Tai.

With its abundance of dairies, farms and artisan food and drink makers, Delaware County has long since established itself as a destination for those looking for authentic farm-to-table dining experiences. But there are also great international cuisine options that are also available in the region - from Mediterranean fare to Mexican and Japanese delights. By Lisa Wisely

The Tulip and the Rose (435 Main St., Franklin 607.829.4040 thetulipandtherose.com) features an eclectic menu that includes traditionally prepared Turkish, Asian and Western cuisine made from the finest local organic ingredients. Their special Tuesday night dinners spotlight a different cuisine each week, all made from seasonal ingredients. Popular past events have included Indian, Mediterranean and Malay specialties. Mi Lupita (967 Main St, Fleischmanns 845.254.4979) is a small roadside convenience grocery store serving some of the best authentic Mexican food

found this side of the boarder with full service seating in the rear. Just across the street is another fine Mexican eatery, La Cabana (966 Main St., Fleischmanns 845.254.4966), which is perfect for larger parties and get-togethers with its large dining hall, extensive menu and full bar. Greenane Farms (196 County Road 10, Meridale 607.746.8878 greenanefarms.com) is another Delaware County source for authentic Mexican food. During the warm weather months they’re serving up garden fresh delights including empanadas, tamales, carnitas and salsas all made on the

premises and brought to your table in their rustic dining room. Tuna III (82 Main St, Delhi 607.746.6777 tunaiii.com) offers fresh, made-to-order sushi and Japanese food. They also have hot and cold sake, and a selection of imported and domestic beers. Hanah Mountain Resort and Country Club (576 W Hubbell Hill Rd, Margaretville 845.586.4849 hanahcountryresort.com) serves a variety of traditional American and European favorites in their restaurant and bar with a Fiesta Thursday menu featuring the best that Mexico has to offer. I enjoy the poetic beauty of the fog over the Delaware River, or the sunrise early in the morning. From my window on the 7th floor at the college (the tallest building in the county), I can see a mountain with deer nibbling at bushes and hawks circling over the valley. My daily commute is a short walk across a quaint village where every face is familiar. It is a simple, curious place to live and work. nature inspires

By Riikka Olson

“The Delhi Mural,” 2016 (located at 85 Main Street in Delhi) The mountains and valleys of Delaware County are the inspiration for much of my art work. My paintings are a testament of my profound respect for the region’s indefinable spirit and character. By emphasizing the land, the mural I painted on Main Street in Delhi beckons the eye deeper into the picture space, prompting curiosity about what lies beyond that field, over that hill, just round that turn in the road, or through those trees. Joanna Murphy joannamurphy.com

The breathtaking rolling mountains and bucolic vistas of Delaware County are a living inspiration to the area’s many notable artists.

“Bovina Valley,” 2010 I have been painting for over 45 years, maintaining a home in Delaware County for the past 40 years. I paint landscape because we live in it. I continue to live here because it continues to inspire me to try and capture the timeless beauty and wonder of nature: the light, the color, the space. There is no better place to feel the awesome power of nature and be reminded we are but a small part of it all. Wayne Morris
