Brown City
Deckerville
Just as the first towns in Michigan grew up along the lakes and rivers – pre-industrial transportation routes – subsequent settlements formed along the burgeoning rail system – the ribbons of steel track that stitched the state and country together. Brown City began as the farm of Robert Brown. With the coming of the Port Huron and Northwestern Railroad, the farm grew into a settlement. In 1879, Robert and his brother, John, christened the growing town Brown City. The east-west trail that cut through the 19th Century settlement became today’s M-90. Brown City, tucked into Sanilac County’s southwest corner, remains the urban hub of a large agricultural region, which includes a thriving Amish community. Residents and businesses annually celebrate their heritage in June now called “Thumb Area Soy Bean Festival” (formerly Brown City Days) highlighted by a parade, carnival and an array of family activities. The city features a wildlife sanctuary and a park bustling with barbecuing and games of horseshoes, volleyball and baseball. Brown City Community: http://www.ci.brown-city.mi.us/
Deckerville takes its name from Charles Decker, who launched a lumber business here in 1870. Decker’s son, Martin, became the settlement’s first postmaster that same year. Deckerville incorporated as a village in 1893 and to this day is home to a number of Charles’ descendents. Located just 6 miles from the Lake Huron shoreline, Deckerville has several shops and restaurants, as well as a full-service hospital and library available for campers and resorters. During the summertime, visitors can take a dip in the village’s outdoor pool or roll a few balls at the local bowling alley. In August, past and present villagers gather for the Deckerville Homecoming festival, which features a tractor pull, parade, fireworks and many more activities. In mid September, residents mark the beginning of fall with Oktoberfest. Don’t forget about their Dickens of a Christmas in December. Come celebrate the change of seasons in Deckerville! Croswell

Croswell is an excellent example of Thumb Area living: friendly people of the present who take great pride in their past. Croswell is home to a locally famous swinging footbridge built in 1905 over the Black River, which bisects the city on its way to Port Huron and the Great Lake. A folksy sign at the east end of the suspension bridge advises pedestrians to “Be Good To Your Mother-in-Law.” The city itself is dotted with pre-Civil War homes and buildings. Lumbering dominated Croswell until the Great Thumb Fire of 1881. Since then, agriculture has been the dominant economic activity, especially sugar beets, symbolized by the city’s iconic Pioneer Sugar plant. The annual Croswell Fair is in August this year and features livestock exhibits and a midway full of rides. The Swinging Bridge Festival in August celebrates the upcoming harvest with a Cardboard Regatta on the Black River. See ads on page 6 and 44. Lexington When Lexington was founded in 1835, it became the first outpost north of Port Huron. Eleven years later, Reuben Diamond named the village after the Battle of Lexington, in which his wife’s cousin, Ethan Allen, fought during the Revolutionary War. The Cadillac Hotel has stood at the heart of village life since its days as a log hotel from 1840 to 1860, when it was rebuilt following a fire. Steamships and freighters made regular stops at the port of Lexington for lumber and agricultural products until the Great Storm of 1913 destroyed the village’s long dock into Lake Huron. Lexington is now noted for its many Victorian homes and historic buildings filled with shops, restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts. With its handful of pretty parks and its quaint downtown, the village is the summertime host of the Music in the Park Series, Thumb Fest, the Lexington Art Fair and the annual Bach Festival. Protected by a limestone seawall, Lexington’s picturesque marina doubles as an official State of Michigan Harbor of Refuge. Its beach offers visitors a chance to kick back and enjoy the summer. Nearby golf courses, a bike trail to Croswell, seasonal hunting spots, abundant fishing and a thriving cottage culture make Lexington a vacation mini-mecca. See ad page 7. Marlette, located in the heart of Michigan’s Thumb, was first settled in the mid-1800’s by Canadians lured by the tall timber and fertile soil of the area. The lumber industry gave way to farming after the Great Thumb Fire of 1881, with sugar beets, soy beans and corn dominating production today. A large Amish community gives the countryside around Marlette the aura of a bygone era, complete with horse-drawn buggies and outlets selling produce, furniture and baked goods. The friendly city offers a handful of recreational options, including a challenging nine-hole public golf course, a community swimming pool, various agri-tourism opportunities and a playground. One of the biggest employers in the area is Marlette Regional Hospital. Visitors to Marlette may stay in a bed-and-breakfast, stroll the smalltown shopping district and enjoy a casual meal far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. See ad page 12.
Sandusky, located 15 miles inland from Port Sanilac at the intersection of M-46 and M-19, is the county seat of Sanilac County. Sandusky offers all the services and resources you’d expect from a much larger city: top-notch medical care, a variety of shopping opportunities, lodging, dining, up-to-date library, excellent law enforcement, emergency services and more. Farming and industry combine to make Sandusky an honest, hard working, progressive and safe community. Sandusky has many recreational opportunities and is a beehive of activity. It is home to the annual Michigan Thumb Festival in June, the Sanilac County 4-H Fair in August and popular Original Country Christmas Lighted Farm Implement Parade in December. Sandusky boasts the only tri-plex movie theater in the county as well as a bowling alley, basketball courts, fully handicapped accessible playground in its city park and a public golf course. Port Sanilac The village now known as Port Sanilac was founded in the early 1840’s by lumbermen who erected a shelter close enough to the beach that it could be seen by passing Great Lakes sailors. The sailors christened the settlement after its appearance – “Bark Shanty Point.” In 1857, the residents officially changed the name of their hometown to Port Sanilac. By then, the village was in full swing. A saw mill, schoolhouse and general store opened in the late 1840’s. In 1850, Raymond Hardware opened – and never closed: it is currently the oldest continuously operated hardware store in Michigan. The blue water of Lake Huron and its sandy beaches have always been Port Sanilac’s chief attractions. The Port Sanilac Lighthouse began illuminating the local waters in 1886 and has been a popular tourist destination ever since. The village’s Harbor of Refuge offers 32 seasonal slips and 35 transient slips as well as a convenient diving launch-site for the Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve, which encompasses 163 square miles of protected lake bottom featuring shipwrecks dating back to 1864. Port Sanilac is also home to the Barn Theatre and the Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum, a 10-acre campus that showcases eight historical buildings. The community features a handful of casual dining spots, bed-and-breakfasts, the Sanilac District Library, and a vibrant cottage culture. See ad page 11. Carsonville, Applegate, Argyle, Melvin, Minden City, Forester, Forestville, Peck, Snover Scattered throughout Sanilac County are several smaller communities, each with its own history and each with its unique attractions. Carsonville, for example, was founded in 1853 by Silas Hall and was known as Hall’s Corners until 1884 when businessman Arthur Carson renamed the settlement. In Peck, you can find a hardware store straight out of the 1950’s. A bar in Applegate serves up some of the best pizza in the county. Despite their differences, the communities share the small-town friendliness and helpfulness that are common throughout Sanilac County.

Fitness Opportunities, Relaxing Views Fit families can kayak, bike and run together in Sanilac County. The most exciting fitness news in Sanilac County is the scheduled 2011 opening of the Sanilac portion of the water trail known as the Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail. But it’s not the only news. Sanilac County is home to a growing network of non-motorized trails and a number of competitive running events that make the county a fun, healthy spot to visit!

The Sanilac leg of the Tip of the Thumb Heritage Trail is set to open this summer. The water trail follows the coastline of Lake Huron from Tuscola County on Saginaw Bay around the tip of Michigan’s Thumb and down the state’s easterly coastline. In Sanilac County, there will be nine access points to the trail. In order, from south to north, they are: Lexington Harbor, Lexington County Park, Walker Road, Horatio Earle Park (aka Two Mile Park), Port Sanilac Harbor, Downington Road, Mills Park (aka Four Mile Park), Delaware Park, and Forestville. Each access point will be marked with a sign visible from the water. Pick up a brochure or visit the trail website (thumbtrails.com) for services available at each access point. “The trail is great for kayaking or travel by any other nonmotorized vessel,” said Sarah Kolascz-Arrell, a member of the non-profit citizen organization sponsoring the trail. The county’s best known bike trail runs from Lexington due west for five miles along highway M-90, past beet fields, pastures and into Croswell, home of Pioneer Sugar. It’s a great bike ride or hike. The villages of Port Sanilac and Lexington along with the townships of Sanilac and Lexington are close to beginning work on the first stage of a non-motorized trail from Port Sanilac to Lexington, which will link to the Cros-Lex trail. Road races dot the summer calendar in Sanilac County. Nearly every city or village with a summer festival also sponsors a 5K race: • June 11, 2011, 7:30 am is a Duane E. Smith Memorial Run, starting at Family HealthCare of Brown City. • June 25, 2011 is Sandusky’s Thumb Fest 5K, at Diamond Trail Park and Maple Valley School.

Olympic division: swim 1000 meters, bike 24 miles and run 10K. • The Bark Shanty Festival in Port Sanilac holds its 5K run/walk on July 23. • The Swinging Bridge 5K Trail Run in Croswell will be held at 6 p.m. on August 6. • The Lexington 5K, 9 a.m., August 13. Whether your sailboat is your “cottage on the lake” or your “one design racer”, sailing has been rooted in Port Sanilac since the harbor was built in 1951. With the addition of a second Harbor of Refuge located in Lexington in 1975, sailing has become a popular recreation activity for vacationing mariners and local sailors alike in Sanilac County. The Sanilac shoreline has become an excellent vantage point for viewing the legendary Port Huron to Mackinaw Yacht race. This race, held in July each summer, has become more of a spectator sport then ever. The new race course has the 300 boat fleet hugging the shoreline. The spectacular scene of colorful spinnakers contrasted against the deep blue waters of Lake Huron are a sight that postcards and vacation memories are made of. Local Port Huron Racing Federation (PHRF) racing is held from late May through late September. The Bark Shanty Sail Club hosts theses races along with an annual Lake Huron Yachting Association regatta.
Fishing
With the ice breakup in late March comes the excitement of early spring fishing. The water is still cold and it gives the angler an advantage for finding trout, salmon or steelhead. The fish seek the warm water of the stream runoff and are close to shore. Shallow water fishing is most productive. Most fishing tournaments are run in May and early June. As the water warms, the big fish go deep and offshore. By late June the perch start coming in. Perch populations have grown in recent years. The DNR reports that the Sanilac area has been an anomaly for perch count. Perch fishing in the past couple of years has stayed strong right into the fall when the salmon and trout run. The fall months bring the spawning season. Brown trout are frequently caught near streams and harbor entrances. In September and October of 2008, the DNR expanded their fish plantings out of Port Sanilac. A fish count completed at that time showed a good cross section of species in the twenty to forty foot depth contour.
Diving
Since the shipwreck discovery of the steamer “Regina” in the 1980’s, recreational diving has exploded along the Sanilac shoreline. There are over 14 different wrecks within an hour of Port Sanilac or Lexington. Water clarity has dramatically increased in Lake Huron over the past 15 years. It is not uncommon to hear reports of 75 foot visibility. Deep and shallow water dives are equally rewarding. With all the interest generated by the many wrecks of the Great Storm of 1913, the Sanilac Underwater Preserve was formed to protect these wrecks from treasure hunters and salvagers. Commercial dive charters operate out of both Lexington and Port Sanilac harbors. Compressed air and dive supplies are available in Port Sanilac. Several Detroit metropolitan area dive shops organize dive trips to the Thumb area.

Sailing
Kayaking along the shores of Lake Huron is gaining in popularity. The clean, clear water; the calm, soothing action of the waves; and the beauty of the shoreline all combine to give the novice or experienced kayaker a refreshing experience. Take the opportunity to explore isolated beaches easily accessible from the water. Now with the introduction of the Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail linking Saginaw Bay, around Lake Huron through the southern tip of Sanilac County, distances between landings can be as little as a mile or less. Welcome to the unique beauty of Sanilac County. With thirty miles of coastline bordering Lake Huron, it is a spectacular sight at any time of year. Public parks along Lakeshore Drive (M-25) allow access to clean, sandy beaches and pristine blue waves. In winter the expanses of snow-covered ice are an extraordinary treat to see. Photographic opportunities abound. Inland we are a rural community with much of the area being agricultural. Intermittent woodlots and forests are at their prime during the fall color change. Guaranteed to be a breathtaking event. To make your stay comfortable the area offers a choice of hotels and resorts. They offer a full range of services for the vacationer looking to be pampered. More rustic accommodations are available in the form of cabins or campsites. Enjoy a fire as you unwind and visit with friends and family. In the morning let one of our many Mom and Pop restaurants prepare you a delicious breakfast. If you would like some homemade sandwiches or other lunch items to take with you, just ask. I’m sure they will be glad to prepare food to your liking. Nearby are public beaches to sunbathe, swim, take pictures, walk the beach, read a book, or collect stones and shells. Fishermen will find opportunities from fishing off of the harbor walls to chartering a boat. If you prefer to keep your feet on dryer ground there is bowling, horseback riding, golfing, hiking, putt-putt, hunting, nature watching, sledding and snowmobiling. A special activity to include in your day is a visit to the Octagon Barn in Gagetown (www.thumboctagonbarn.org). This structure exists as a monument to the agricultural community it serves. Here is a historic look at the structures and building designs used by our forefathers. Another rare opportunity seen nowhere else in the State of Michigan is the Sanilac Petroglyphs (www.michigan.gov/ sanilacpetroglyphs). It is a 240-acre park containing the only known rock carvings attributable to Native American Indians in Michigan, and has lots of room to hike, explore, and watch nature. Be sure to save enough time and not hurry through. Bring a lunch and spend the day. A perfect way to conclude one of your daily outings is to visit the The Blue Water Winery (bluewaterwinery.com). Perhaps bring a few bottles home for future pleasures or to give as gifts. Amish are an integral part of our community. They own scores of farms and make baked goods, crafts, and other original Amish made products for sale. Annually, there are auctions conducted by the Amish with many antiques providing an opportunity for the collector among you. Sanilac County is a great place to visit. The Vibrant Music Scene in Sanilac County Sanilac County is alive with the sound of music throughout the year. The scene is particularly vibrant during the summer. In the county seat, the Sandusky Arts Council (sanduskyarts.org) sponsors the Lawn Chair Music Series held at the gazebo on the lawn of the courthouse in downtown Sandusky. The Friday night concerts begin at 7 p.m. starting June 24, and run weekly through July 14. The series offers a mix of jazz, folk, country and rock. The Sanilac County Historical Museum (sanilacountymuseum. org) is home to year-round Museum Church Concerts held on a variety of Sundays beginning at 3 p.m. 2011 dates include May 1, 15 and 29; June 12 and 26; Oct. 2 and 23; Nov. 6 and 20; and the annual Christmas caroling event on Dec. 11. The events are held in the old Forestville community church, now located at the museum complex, 228 South Ridge Street, Port Sanilac. The Village of Port Sanilac (portsanilac.net) hosts Music at the Harbor every Saturday night, 7-9 p.m., from June 25 through September 3, 2011. A variety of folk, classical, jazz, country, Celtic and rock acts perform in the park at the foot of Main Street, adjacent to the harbor. The Lexington Arts Council (lexarts.com) is the engine that makes the Village of Lexington the center of live music in Sanilac County. Each September, the council sponsors the four-day Bach Festival, bringing world class musicians to the small port on Lake Huron. From Friday, June 24, through August, the Arts Council sponsors Music in the Park at the harbor, featuring top-notch regional blues, rock, jazz, world, folk and classical acts at 7:30 p.m. On Labor Day weekend, the Arts Council partners with the Blue Water Folk Society (bluewaterfolk.org) to produce Thumbfest, featuring dozens of roots musicians on multiple stages, plus a dance hall, jam sites, music workshops and more. From October through March, the Folk Society sponsors a 1960’s style coffeehouse on the second Saturday of each month, 7-10 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in the village. Lexington is also home to one of the most intimate for-profit music venues in the state, the Lexington Music Theatre (lexmtc.com), which books national acts throughout the year. Whatever music you enjoy, you’ll be able to find it in Sanilac County. Tune in!
