aring for a relative, partner, friend or neighbour can be hugely rewarding but it can also be stressful and confusing.

Our free “Health and Wellbeing for Carers” course will provide you with practical tips on taking care of your own health and wellbeing when you're looking after someone. There’s also advice on how to maintain relationships and handy information on where to go for help for yourself as a carer.

Unpaid care worth £132 billion C arers UK research has found that the value of the contribution made by carers in the UK is now worth a staggering £132 billion each year.

That's a fifth of UK Government spending, and almost as much as the value of UK health spending.

The course sessions are from 10am-2.30pm in venues across Greater Manchester on the following dates: 15 December 2015 and 7 March 2016.

Read the new report Valuing Carers 2015 – the rising value of carers’ support, which is the third in a series of research reports looking at the value to the UK economy of the support provided by unpaid carers.

See the Recovery Academy prospectus for more information about the course: www.gmw.nhs.uk/recovery.

The report is available to download for free from the Carers UK website: www.carersuk.org #valuemycare

Your right to social care and support I

f you think you need social care support, you’ll need to think about what types of support you need – be it homecare workers, equipment or respite breaks. You may like to find out about the latest changes to the Care Act, which relates to most adult carers who are caring for another adult.

Your first step to getting this sort of help should be to ask your local authority social services department for an assessment of your needs. This assessment will help you decide on the type of services you may want, as well as helping the local authority

The CARE Act eLearning from Bolton Council The Care Act 2014 changes can be a lot to take in. Carers’ Strategy 2015-2018

W

e are excited to tell you that on 29 January 2016, as part of our annual carers event, we will launch our new Carers’ Strategy. This is our second Carers’ Strategy, developed in collaboration with carers and local voluntary groups as part of Carers Week 2015. The strategy sets out our vision for engaging, involving and supporting carers as well as the direction and focus for the Trust and local organisations to work together to bring about tangible and lasting improvements.

understand which services you need. Your local authority may be able to offer you some care services for free. It’s worth finding out if you can get free services from your local authority, because the cost of buying care services is likely to be high if

you have long-term care needs, and they could increase as you get older. For more information, read about funding your care. Social care and support information can be found on NHS Choices’ website under ‘Care and support’ www.nhs.uk.

Family Interventions at Achieve S

alford Achieve’s Psychosocial Intervention (PSI) team can now offer five family intervention sessions to the carers and/ or family members of people who have drug and/or alcohol problems. The team recognises how important it is that family members get support too – especially as they may not view themselves as carers. This is a brief intervention, offered on a one-to-one basis in confidence for people whose happiness and choices are adversely affected by a loved one’s drinking or drug use. Family members and carers can self-refer or be referred in through another agency. Their loved one does not need to be in drug or alcohol treatment in order for the family member to be eligible for this intervention, but, if they are already in treatment, then the drug/alcohol user’s case manager can also make a referral on behalf of the family member. Salford Achieve also deliver Guided Self-Help Family Interventions training to staff and volunteers from any Salford-based agencies working with drug and alcohol users’ family members. This is a FREE one-day course – dates for this training will be advertised shortly but any enquiries can be made by ringing 0161 358 1530.

Information for carers in different languages Tracy Collard, GMW’s Carer Lead, was successful in securing money from the Trust’s Dragon’s Den, an initiative which funds small innovative projects across our services, to produce leaflets for carers in the five most commonly used languages that are spoken across the GMW footprint. Tracy will design a generic mental health inpatient leaflet and a generic community services leaflet that carers can pick up or be given to provide them with the most important information and signpost them to other support services. This project will hopefully enable more people to identify themselves as carers and engage with services that may help them to continue in their caring role.

GMW’s good practice recognised by Carers Trust I

n order to gain a better understanding of the needs of young carers and young adult carers caring for someone with a mental health problem, Carers Trust (a new charity for, with and about carers) carried out consultations with young carers and young adult carers, young carer workers, mental health professionals and service users across England.

As a result of these consultations, Carers Trust has developed the Triangle of Care for Young Carers and Young Adult Carers as a supplementary guide to sit alongside the national Triangle of Care initiative. The Triangle of Care aims to improve communication between those caring for people with a mental health problem and mental health professionals. Carers Trust have highlighted where considered adjustments are required to the approach of the Triangle of Care and its six standards in order to meet the specific needs of young carers and young adult carers. In the new guide, we have been cited twice as examples of good practice for our work with young carers at our Meadowbrook mental health unit in Salford. This is fantastic news and recognises our work towards the Triangle of Care standards and why we’ve become one of only four mental health trusts in the country to receive a second gold star for our commitment to the scheme.

Did you know that as a carer, you may be eligible for a free flu vaccination through your GP?

C

arers in receipt of Carers Allowance, or who are caring for an elderly or disabled person who might be vulnerable if you were to fall ill, may be eligible for a free yearly flu vaccination.

If your GP knows you are a carer, they should write to you over the coming months to let you know about their flu jab clinics. If you need more information, please visit: http://www.nhs.uk/staywell/.

carers information pack and presented the support available for carers.

Our mental health team in Bolton held information stalls at the Octagon, Bolton Market and Sainsbury’s where staff spoke to the public about services for carers. They also held coffee afternoons on GMW’s mental health wards in Bolton.

arers Week is a UK-wide annual awareness campaign organised by Carers UK, which aims to improve the lives of carers and the people they care for. This year, it took place from Monday 8 to Sunday 14 June 2015.

We organised a range of opportunities for carers to shape the services available for them and get information, support and advice. This year, the focus was on building Carer Friendly Communities. Communities which support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this year’s Carers Week the most

successful ever! 2,290 individuals and organisations signed up with 1,730 pledges of support, and thousands of events taking place around the UK. We know that so many local services held events including information stalls, afternoon tea celebrations, introductions to our services, tours of our wards and more.

A party for carers was held on GMW’s Greenway ward at the Moorside Unit in Trafford. Afternoon tea was served to carers and our clients followed by Singing for the Brain and an Elton John themed party! If you would like to discuss how you could get involved in next year's event, please contact Tracy Collard on Tel: 0161 772 3935 or email: tracy.collard@gmw.nhs.uk. For more information visit: www.carersweek.org. Thank you to everyone for making Carers Week 2015 such a huge success!

Here are just a few examples: Our alcohol and drug service in Lancashire ‘Discover’ ran a number of carer’s listening events at each of their four community bases. Carers were invited for lunch and to meet the staff. There were also opportunities for trying out mindfulness practice under guidance. Our alcohol and drug service in Salford, Achieve, organised information stands and ran listening events for carers of all ages. Our Specialist Services Network held an event at the Waterdale Restaurant in Prestwich where they launched their new
